Abstract
Whilst prior nuclear forensic studies have focused on identifying signatures to distinguish between different uranium deposit types, this paper focuses on providing a scientific basis for source identification of materials from different uranium mine sites within a single region, which can then be potentially used within nuclear forensics. A number of different tools, including gamma spectrometry, alpha spectrometry, mineralogy and major and minor elemental analysis, have been utilised to determine the provenance of uranium mineral samples collected at eight mine sites, located within three different uranium provinces, in Portugal. A radiation survey was initially conducted by foot and/or unmanned aerial vehicle at each site to assist sample collection. The results from each mine site were then compared to determine if individual mine sites could be distinguished based on characteristic elemental and isotopic signatures. Gamma and alpha spectrometry were used to differentiate between samples from different sites and also give an indication of past milling and mining activities. Ore samples from the different mine sites were found to be very similar in terms of gangue and uranium mineralogy. However, rarer minerals or specific impurity elements, such as calcium and copper, did permit some separation of the sites examined. In addition, classification rates using linear discriminant analysis were comparable to those in the literature.

Abstract
Neutrophils are recruited into the female reproductive tract following insemination to eliminate excess spermatozoa and bacteria introduced by the breeding process. In natural breeding, bovine semen is deposited in the vagina and sperm migrate into the uterus, leaving the bulk of seminal plasma (SP) behind. Current artificial insemination protocols introduce variable amounts of SP and semen extender into the uterus. Beside phagozytosis and secretion of immune modulators, polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are able to form neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) extruding their DNA into the extracellular environment and ensnare pathogens including sperm cells. Recently, a time-dependent increase in bovine NETs formation has been reported. In the absence of SP and extender only a low degree of NETs formation by the sperm cells alone was detected (Fichtner et al. 2017 Reprod. Domest. Anim. 52(S1), 16). The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different semen extenders with various supplements or varying SP concentrations on NETs formation. Bovine PMN were isolated via Ficoll gradient centrifugation from peripheral blood. Semen extenders, purchased from 2 companies, were supplemented either with no animal protein or fresh egg yolk or “egg yolk-like substances” (gamma-irradiated sterile egg yolk or phospholipids as liposomes). The SP collected from ejaculates of eight 5-year-old bulls was added to the incubation medium in concentrations of 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, and 20%. For NETs induction, PMN and semen extenders or SP concentrations were co-cultured for 60 min; PMN and incubation medium alone served as negative controls. After incubation, the samples were treated with micrococcal nuclease and stained with PicoGreen. Quantification was performed by spectrofluorometric analyses using an automated plate monochrome reader (Varioscan Flash; Thermo Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA). Relative fluorescence intensities (FI in arbitrary units, AU) were calculated by subtracting the values of the negative controls from the ones obtained from the different samples. For statistical analyses, a one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s HSD test was used. Experiments were repeated at least 9 times. No significant differences in the relative FI were detected between the 2 animal protein-free extenders. A significantly higher FI was observed in one of the extenders supplemented with egg yolk compared with the other. The same held true for one extender completed with an egg yolk-like substance. Relative FI significantly increased from 1 to 5% SP, stayed constant up to 10%, followed by a slight decrease up to a concentration of 20%. These data indicate that formation of NETs in vitro depends on the composition of the extender itself and the protein source used by different companies. Furthermore, formation of NETs is also dependent on the dose of SP. From these results, it could be speculated that semen extenders plus additives and SP may affect fertility.

Abstract
The first measurement of transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) process is reported. We use the CERN SPS 190 GeV/c π^{-} beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. Three azimuthal asymmetries giving access to different transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) are extracted using dimuon events with invariant mass between 4.3 GeV/c^{2} and 8.5 GeV/c^{2}. Within the experimental uncertainties, the observed sign of the Sivers asymmetry is found to be consistent with the fundamental prediction of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) that the Sivers TMD PDFs extracted from DY have a sign opposite to the one extracted from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data. We present two other asymmetries originating from the pion Boer-Mulders TMD PDFs convoluted with either the nucleon transversity or pretzelosity TMD PDFs. A recent COMPASS SIDIS measurement was obtained at a hard scale comparable to that of these DY results. This opens the way for possible tests of fundamental QCD universality predictions.

Abstract
Cancer represents one of the main causes of death worldwide; consequently, preventive interventions are of utmost importance in public health education. The leading model of cancer prevention campaigns is based on general and undifferentiated actions mediated by health professionals, focusing on the technical and scientific information but rather ineffective in changing the symbolic, cognitive and practical relationship with the disease. New intervention models are thus required to address cancer literacy, being early interventions targeted to specific groups an elective counterpoint to contribute to positive and durable changes in cancer prevention. Our aim is to evaluate the feasibility and impact of cancer prevention programmes planned as focused interventions in restricted targets and mediated by non-healthcare professionals to increase cancer literacy and promote preventive behaviours. This pilot study evaluates schools' potential as a vehicle for cancer prevention education in a reality shaped by traditional health prevention campaigns. We developed a protocol of systematic surveying in order to review and, in the future, optimize and replicate this ecological model of intervention to other groups and contexts. The implementation of this model has been successful in which concerns to the effectiveness of the training programme for teachers. This led to the development of impactful cancer prevention education projects by trainees targeted to their students, allowing us to argue that it contributes to knowledge and practice in this complex as consensual priority area of intervention.

Abstract
The scientific literature has shown positive results regarding intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid in osteoarthritic joints. When injecting in the hip joint, the guidance of ultrasound can provide higher injection accuracy and repeatability. However, due to the methodological limitations in the current available literature, its recommendation in the current practice is still controversial. This study shows that ultrasound-guided intra-articular injections of triamcinolone hexacetonide and hyaluronic acid can improve pain, function and quality of life in patients with symptomatic and radiographic hip osteoarthritis. In addition, the administration of triamcinolone hexacetonide and hyaluronic acid to the hip joint in these patients can delay the need for interventional surgery.

Abstract
After a burn lesion, Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) may occur via direct lung injury due to inhaled smoke and fumes or mediated by the inflammatory response associated with the burn or its infectious complications. The aim of the present study is to assess the epidemiologic profile of ARDS in adult burn patients admitted to intensive care in a burn unit at a university hospital. A prospective cohort study was performed from January to December 2012. Demographic and diagnostic data, prognostic scores, etiology and data on the extent and depth of burns were collected. Data related to risk factors for ARDS and death were also recorded. A total of 85 patients were included in the study. Patients were aged 41.7 (SD = 15.7) years old; 71.8% were male and the mean total body surface area burned was 28.3% (SD = 19.1%); 35.3% presented inhalation injuries. Invasive ventilatory support was required in 44 ICU inpatients (51.8%). ARDS was diagnosed in 38.6% of patients under invasive mechanical ventilation. In multivariate analysis, the presence of inhalation injuries was a risk factor for ARDS (OR = 9.75; CI 95% 2.79 - 33.95; P < 0.001). ARDS is a common complication in burn patients admitted to specialized intensive care units. Inhalation injuries were an independent risk factor for ARDS. Mortality rate observed in the study patients was high and associated with ARDS diagnosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) is frequently associated to other morbid conditions that act as risk factors influencing OSAS morbidity and mortality. AIM To analyse the presence of co-morbidities in OSAS patients, recruited from a sleep outpatient clinic in Northern Portugal, stratified as a function of OSAS severity. PATIENTS AND METHODS A cohort of 319 sleep-disordered patients was assessed by clinical and sleep video-polygraphic recording. Patients (n = 209) with sleep respiratory distress had OSAS (n = 145) and severity defined according to Apnoea/Hypopnea Index (AHI); 64 had primary snoring or respiratory distress with AHI < 5; and 110 had other sleep disorders. A full individual background study was possible in 128 OSAS patients. The association to unique or multiple co-morbidities was assessed by clinical and analytical studies in general group or as a function of OSAS severity. RESULTS The presence of co-morbidities was of 75% in all OSAS patients and of 79.5% in the severe group of OSAS. Forty seven of patients had only one co-morbidity. The most common was obesity (56.3%) followed by high blood pressure, diabetes and other cardiovascular disorders. Obesity was present in 84% among the most severe OSAS cases and always present in those with multiple co-morbidities. When compared with the group of patients without sleep respiratory distress the co-morbidity condition was more frequently related to OSAS (p = 0.0196). CONCLUSION Comorbidities are commonly associated to OSAS independently of disease severity. Among the comorbidities present obesity was the most common in the most severe OSAS cases.

Abstract
The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured diffractive dissociation of 190 GeV/c pions into the π(-)π(-)π(+) final state using a stationary hydrogen target. A partial-wave analysis (PWA) was performed in bins of 3π mass and four-momentum transfer using the isobar model and the so far largest PWA model consisting of 88 waves. A narrow peak is observed in the f0(980)π channel with spin, parity and C-parity quantum numbers J(PC)=1(++). We present a resonance-model study of a subset of the spin-density matrix selecting 3π states with J(PC)=2(++) and 4(++) decaying into ρ(770)π and with J(PC)=1(++) decaying into f0(980)π. We identify a new a1 meson with mass (1414(-13)(+15)) MeV/c2 and width (153(-23)(+8)) MeV/c2. Within the final states investigated in our analysis, we observe the new a1(1420) decaying only into f0(980)π, suggesting its exotic nature.
