Abstract
Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an idiopathic systemic autoimmune disease. It is characterized by a triad of hallmarks: immune dysfunction, fibrosis and vasculopathy. Immune dysfunction in SSc is characterized by the activation and recruitment of immune cells and the production of autoantibodies and cytokines. How immune abnormalities link the fibrosis and vasculopathy in SSc is poorly understood. A plethora of immune cell types are implicated in the immunopathogenesis of SSc, including T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, mast cells and macrophages. How these different cell types interact to contribute to SSc is complicated, and can involve cell-to-cell interactions and communication via cytokines, including transforming growth factor (TGF)-β, interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-4. We will attempt to review significant and recent research demonstrating the importance of immune cell regulation in the immunopathogenesis of SSc with a particular focus on fibrosis.

Abstract
Environmental challenges presented by temperature variation can be overcome through phenotypic plasticity in small invasive ectotherms. We tested the effect of thermal exposure to 21, 18, and 11°C throughout the whole life cycle of individuals, thermal exposure of adults reared at 25°C to 15 and 11°C for a 21-d period, and long (14:10 hr) and short (10:14 hr) photoperiod on ovary size and development in Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) cultured from a recently established population in Topeka, Kansas (United States). Examination of the response to temperature and photoperiod variation in this central plains population provides insight into the role of phenotypic plasticity in a climate that is warmer than regions in North America where D. suzukii was initially established. We found both low temperature and short photoperiod resulted in reduced ovary size and level of development. In particular, reduced ovary development was observed following exposure to 15°C, indicating that ovary development in females from the central plains population is more sensitive to lower temperature compared with populations examined from the northern United States and southern Canada. We also provide evidence that D. suzukii reared at 25°C are capable of short-term hardening when exposed to -6°C following 4°C acclimation, contrary to previous reports indicating flies reared at warm temperatures do not rapidly-cold harden. Our study highlights the central role of phenotypic plasticity in response to winter-like laboratory conditions and provides an important geographic comparison to previously published assessments of ovary development and short-term hardening survival response for D. suzukii collected in cooler climates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) are at greater risk of exposure to traumatic life events compared with the non-ID population. Yet no study to date has examined the role of multiple traumatisation and subsequent psychopathology in people with ID. The aim of this study was to explore the association between multiple traumatisation and subsequent mental health. METHODS A preliminary cross-sectional study involving 33 participants with DSM-5 post-traumatic stress disorder completed self-report questionnaires on exposure to traumatic life events and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms, anxiety, depression and general distress. RESULTS A proportion of 42.4% of the sample reported multiple traumatisation, including exposure to life events in both childhood and adulthood. Those who reported exposure to life events in childhood and adulthood reported significantly higher risk of harm, depression and general psychological distress compared with those who reported exposure to life events only in adulthood. CONCLUSIONS Preliminary results indicate that more severe psychopathology is associated with multiple traumatisation in childhood and adulthood compared with trauma experienced solely in adulthood.

Abstract
Microsporidia are intracellular organisms most commonly known to cause opportunistic infection in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). There have been several case reports of infection in solid organ and bone marrow transplant recipients. Here, we report a case of a non-HIV-infected renal transplant patient with microsporidiosis of the renal tract associated with acute graft dysfunction. We also review the literature of 12 previously reported cases of microsporidiosis in patients with renal transplants who had described graft involvement. We review the pattern of illness as well as the common renal biopsy features when microsporidial infection is associated with renal graft infection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Disuse osteopenia is a known consequence of reduced weight-bearing and has been demonstrated at the hip following leg injury but has not been specifically studied in postmenopausal women. METHOD Bilateral DXA (GE Lunar Prodigy) bone mineral density (BMD) measurements were taken at the neck of femur (NOF), total hip region (TH) and lumbar spine in postmenopausal female groups comprising controls (N = 43), new leg fractures (#<3wks) (N = 9), and participants who had sustained a leg fracture more than one year previously (#>1yr) (N = 24). #>1yr were assessed at a single visit and the remaining groups at intervals over twelve months. Weight-bearing, function, 3-day pedometer readings, and pain levels were also recorded. RESULTS The #<3wks demonstrated significant (p < 0.05) losses in ipsilateral TH BMD at 6 weeks from baseline 0.927 ± 0.137 g/cm2, to 0.916 ± 0.151 g/cm2 improving to 0.946 ± 0.135 g/cm2 (n.s) at 12 months following gradual return to normal function and weight-bearing activity. The #>1yr scored significantly below controls in almost all key physical and functional outcomes demonstrating a long-term deficit in hip bone density on the ipsilateral side. CONCLUSION The clinical significance of post-fracture reduction in hip BMD is a potential increased risk of hip fracture for a variable period that may be mitigated after return to normal function and weight-bearing. Improvement at 12 months in #<3wks is not consistent with #>1yr results indicating that long-term impairment in function and bone health may persist for some leg fracture patients. Unilateral bone loss could have implications for Fracture Liaison Services when assessing the requirement for medication post fracture.
