Abstract
Tumour cell dissemination is a complex process, depending on the ability of malignant cells to escape from the primary tumour and penetrate and flow through the bloodstream. Circulating tumour cells can adhere to the vessel wall, dissolve the basal lamina and extravasate, giving origin to metastases. Interactions between tumour cells, blood platelets and leukocytes favour tumour cell adhesion to the vessel wall, migration in extravascular spaces and growth in secondary sites. The biochemical and molecular mechanisms regulating tumour cell adhesion to the vessel wall and intercellular contacts have been studied extensively in recent years. Moreover, it has been shown that either tumour cells or blood cells release growth factors and inflammatory proteins, such as cytokines and chemokines, that may be involved in tumour cell migration and proliferation. Finally, tumour cells and cells of the surrounding tissue possess procoagulant and fibrinolytic properties that may be important in modulating the extracellular matrix around the tumour, to allow tumour cell invasion and progression. We have described the cell types (i.e. blood platelets, leukocytes, endothelial cells), the matrix components (i.e. fibronectin, thrombospondin and laminin) and the growth factors/cytokines (i.e. platelet-derived growth factor, transforming growth factor beta, tumour necrosis factor) involved in these processes. In particular, we have described cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, cell migration and release of growth factors, cytokines, chemotactic peptides and proteolytic enzymes. This survey has also considered a few innovative approaches for the prevention and cure of cancer and metastasis that are based on these new concepts.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To document the functional results of 50 consecutive patients who underwent hand-sewn ileal J pouch-anal restorative proctocolectomy for ulcerative colitis between 1988 and 1991 (mean follow-up, 18.1 months; range, 6 to 48 months). DESIGN Patients recorded their observations daily over 1 week. The patients completed these weekly diaries every 3 months for the first year and then at 18, 24, 36, and 48 months after ileostomy closure. STUDY PARTICIPANTS Fifty patients (mean age, 31 years; 24 males). SETTING The University of Chicago (Ill). RESULTS Stool frequency at 3, 6, 12, and 24 months was 6.3 +/- 2.1, 5.5 +/- 2.4, and 5.1 +/- 1.9, and 5.9 +/- 1.6 per day, respectively, without urgency. Fifty-four percent were perfectly continent; 18% had occasional spotting (one or two leaks per week); 12% had minor leakage (three to seven per week); and 16% had major leakage (more than seven per week). In these three groups, loss of solid feces never occurred in 84%, 88%, and 65% of patients, respectively. Females had more severe incontinence than males, but continence improved over time for both sexes. Twenty-two percent of female patients developed dyspareunia; no males developed impotence, but 19% had retrograde ejaculation. The probability of experiencing pouchitis increased with time from 15% at 6 months to 40% at 12 months, and 50% after 24 months. CONCLUSIONS These results represent an accurate assessment of patient function after ileal J pouch-anal anastomosis. We encourage the use of a prospective, patient-completed protocol to obtain a realistic assessment of functional results.

Abstract
The percentage of TNF alpha- and beta-positive cells was analyzed in hypertrophic scar (N = 13), normotrophic scar (N = 7), and normal skin (N = 6) biopsies using monoclonal antibodies and immunoperoxidase staining of cryostat tissue sections. Samples were first characterized for infiltrating cells. In hypertrophic samples there was a significant increase in activated infiltrating cells, capable of producing TNF beta and IL-1 beta. In contrast, the percentage of TNF alpha-positive cells was significantly lower than that detected in normotrophic scars. In fact, in hypertrophic scar samples a positive staining with anti-TNF alpha mAb was restricted to 8% of tissue-infiltrating cells compared to 35.4% of the cells present in normotrophic scars; 12% of infiltrating cells were stained in normal skin sections. These results suggest that TNF alpha may be important for normal wound healing and that hypertrophic scarring might be partially a consequence of a low amount of TNF alpha.

Abstract
Trop-2 is a cell surface structure recognized by the 162-46.2 mAb and expressed by most human carcinomas. Since the 162-46.2 mAb works poorly in immunoprecipitation, to characterize the structure of Trop-2 we searched for other mAbs directed against this molecule. Selection of candidates was performed by analyzing the characteristics of mAbs directed against epithelial cells and by comparing the staining pattern of each mAb with the one of the 162-46.2 on frozen sections of human epidermis. Two mAbs, T16 and MOv-16, were selected for further analysis. Formal proof that candidate mAbs reacted with Trop-2 was obtained by comparing their binding patterns to mouse L cells transfected with the Trop-2 gene by genomic DNA transfection and selected by FACS using the FITC-162-46.2 mAb. In immunofluorescence FACS analysis the FITC-T16 and FITC-MOv-16 mAbs specifically stained Trop-2 transfectants. The specificity of binding was confirmed by selective blocking of the staining by the respective unconjugated mAb. Interestingly, cross-blocking studies indicated that the 162-46.2, T16 and MOv-16 mAbs recognize the same epitope or closely spaced ones on the Trop-2 molecule. T16 and MOv-16 efficiently immunoprecipitate Trop-2 from Trop-2 transfectants and from the human cell line OVCA-432, indicating that it is a cell surface glycoprotein, with an apparent molecular weight of 57 kD in non-reducing conditions. A weaker band of 38 kD is often co-precipitated with the 57 kD form in an apparently specific manner.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
The antigen recognized by the MOv18 MAb (Ca-MOv18) was recently shown to be a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-linked protein. In this report we show that GPI-anchorage is not limited to IGROVI cells nor to other ovary carcinoma cell lines, but Ca-MOv18 was also found to be sensitive to phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC) treatment on fresh ovarian cancer cells. Furthermore, we found a heterogeneous sensitivity of Ca-MOv18 to PI-PLC cleavage, not only among the different cells studied but also in different experiments performed on the same cell line, during extended periods of time in culture. Sensitivity to PI-PLC cleavage was determined by immunofluorescence on live cells and by double-determinant radioimmunoassay of the antigen released in the supernatant. The specificity of the PI-PLC cleavage was demonstrated as follows: (a) TX114 solubilized Ca-MOv18 shifts from the detergent to the aqueous phase after treatment with PI-PLC; (b) on membrane preparations, PI-PLC specifically released a fraction of the antigen, which is distinct from the weakly associated form released by high-salt treatment; (c) Ca-MOv18 from IGROVI expressed the cross-reacting determinant (CRD), which is characteristic of GPI-linked molecules. The absence of CRD expression on the spontaneously released protein and the possibility of artificially inducing antigen shedding during the resynthesis of Ca-MOv18 which follows bacterial PI-PLC treatment are interesting points which need to be further investigated in order to understand the physiology of the Ca-MOv18 tumor antigen.

Abstract
Small round cell tumors are among the most common problems in the differential diagnosis of cancer, even when more sophisticated histological techniques are utilized (Ezinger and Weiss: In Soft Tissue Tumors. St. Louis: CV Mosby, 1988, pp 668-683). Six cases of small round cell tumors are described the diagnosis of which was particularly difficult. Cytogenetic analysis provided useful information in all of them in making the definitive diagnosis. The reported cases stress the value of cytogenetic methods in approaching difficult diagnostic problems.

Abstract
The present study elucidates the morphology of encapsulated receptors in human skin by means of immunohistochemistry for the recently characterized neurospecific marker protein gene product 9.5, in comparison with neuronal specific enolase and S-100 protein. Only two types of corpuscles are identified, Meissner's corpuscles and simple coiled corpuscles. Moreover, this investigation reveals that though regional specialization may exist with regard to the encapsulated receptor density, the comparison of hairy and nonhairy skin does not reveal important differences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone marrow infiltration occurs rarely at presentation of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) or other childhood solid tumors. This possibility leads to misdiagnosis of leukemia and incorrect therapies might be administered. METHODS We report two patients presenting with diffuse bone marrows involvement by neoplastic cells. Initial studies were not consistent with a diagnosis of leukemia and the cases were further studied extensively by indirect immunofluorescence, immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy and cytogenetics. RESULTS In both cases blast cells were large, poorly differentiated, with immunological reactivity to the anti-desmin antibody. Ultrastructural findings of muscular features and chromosomal translocation t(2;13) (q37;q14) further confirmed the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma of the alveolar subtype. This was then confirmed histologically in one patient. CONCLUSION This study stresses the utility of analyzing cases of morphologically undifferentiated marrow blast cells by various techniques, as well as investigating for different types of both hematological and solid neoplasms.

Abstract
Radioactive antibodies that react with tumour-associated antigens to "tag" antigen-positive tumour cell deposits were given to 20 patients with primary or recurrent colorectal cancer. The tumour associated antigen TAG 72-specific monoclonal antibody B72.3 labelled with 125-Iodine was used, and the radioactivity in the tumour was sought during operation with a hand-held gamma detecting probe. Tumour was detected by the probe in 7 of 15 patients with primary cancer, with a mean tumour: normal tissue ratio of 3.9, and in 4 of 5 patients with recurrent disease, with a mean tumour: normal tissue ratio of 2.0. Immunohistochemical analysis of surgical specimens confirmed the results of the intraoperative detection. The incidence of TAG 72-positive tumours (11/20, 55%), detected by immunohistochemistry, was lower than the 80% in the other series, possibly because of sampling errors or because the cases studied were uncomplicated with small primary tumours. Results obtained with the probe were instrumental in modifying the operation in two of the four "positive" patients with recurrences, allowing the removal of tumour masses that would otherwise have been overlooked.

Abstract
Selection of cells labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate-conjugated (FITC) antibodies can be difficult if large autofluorescent cells are used and if the cells bind only a few molecules of antibody. We have developed a simple flow cytometric procedure that allows better selection of stained cells. When an argon ion laser emitting at 488 nm is used, the green fluorescence detected is the sum of cell autofluorescence and of the signal generated by the FITC antibody. Thus, when we subtract green signal from the red by fluorescence compensation, the signal of stained cells is on average reduced more than for the unstained counterpart. In this scenario, positive selection of cells with low red signal allows more efficient selection of stained cells. We tested the overcompensation procedure on mixtures of cells unstained and stained with a relevant FITC antibody. Cell mixtures were analyzed using normal vs increased levels of compensation in the red channel. Increased levels of compensation resulted in easier gating and higher recovery of stained cells. The efficiency of the overcompensation procedure was particularly high when using red filters with low cutoff (i.e., 560 or 570 nm), possibly because of the significant emission of fluorescein in the red channel, which caused separation between stained and unstained cells also in the red dimension. This method is useful for sorting cells expressing low levels of surface markers and facilitates selection of rare cells transfected with surface antigen genes. This technique is compatible with the use of propidium iodide for live/dead cell discrimination and with the subtraction of the cellular background of autofluorescence.

Abstract
A major inconvenience of intraoperative tumor detection with radiolabeled monoclonal antibody (MoAb) by means of a probe is the long interval needed between the injection of MoAb and surgery (at least 20 days). We describe a new method which entails injection of 125I-labeled biotinylated monoclonal antibodies and cold avidin in order to obtain a rapid blood clearance of the radiotracer. The first clinical application of this protocol has been carried out in a colon cancer patient operated on six days after the administration of 125I-labeled biotinylated MoAb and cold avidin, with an optimal tumor-to-normal tissue ratio and with 90% of the circulating radioactivity cleared in two days.

Abstract
In six kidney donors with normal baseline urinary albumin excretion (UAE) we studied the behavior of the UAE after 150 g of a meat protein meal and after a carbohydrate meal of equal caloric (1,370 kcal), water (1 liter) and sodium content (51 mEq). The mean creatinine clearance (Ccr) increased significantly after a protein load at the first (p less than 0.01) and second hour (p less than 0.05), while it did not change after the carbohydrate meal. The mean UAE increased significantly after the protein meal at the first (p less than 0.05) and second hour (p less than 0.05), while after the carbohydrate meal the mean values were increased at the first (p less than 0.05), second (p less than 0.05) and third hour (p less than 0.05). Furthermore, the mean values of UAE after the protein meal were significantly higher (p less than 0.05) than those found at the same time after the carbohydrate meal. Diuresis and natriuresis increased significantly after both meals. These findings show that the increased UAE after the protein meal may be due to a further increase in Ccr in the hyperfiltering remaining kidney, while the smaller increase in the UAE observed after the carbohydrate meal may be due to water load and increased urine flow, which impairs albumin tubular reabsorption. The prognostic importance of microalbuminuria after either meal is therefore uncertain.

Abstract
In this study the relationship between cyto-morphometric characteristics of breast cancer and lymph node status was investigated. The study was conducted on 20 cases of T1-T2 breast cancer with node metastasis and 20 cases of T1-T2 breast cancer without node metastasis. About 100 nuclei for each patient were analyzed by means of a computerized image analyzer, and mean nuclear diameter, mean nuclear area, mean form factor and number of cells in 8 classes of diameter were studied. Mean mitotic index was also calculated. No statistic difference was found for all these variables, between the two groups. In conclusion, cyto-morphometric parameters although often represent an index of aggressiveness, they are not related to lymph node status. This one is, in fact, only an indicator of tumor's ability to spread, and tumor's diffusion can occur through different ways from the lymphatic one.

Abstract
Immunoperoxidase staining of skin sections obtained from 11 hypertrophic scars, six normotrophic scars and three samples of normal skin were performed using anti-HLA monoclonal antibodies (HLA-DR, -DQ, class I), anti-interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R) and anti-CD1. Sections from all hypertrophic scars showed an anomalous expression of HLA-DR molecules on keratinocytes and fibroblasts. Moreover hypertrophic scars were characterized by dense infiltrates of IL-2R-positive cells and by the presence of abundant Langerhans (CD1+) cells in the epidermis and dermis. These results support the hypothesis that immunologic mechanisms play an important role in hypertrophic scarring and point to an involvement of cell-mediated immune phenomena.

Abstract
Nineteen patients that had developed hypertrophic scars subsequent to thermal injury were typed for HLA class II allogenotypes with the restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. A significant association was found with DR beta 16 (pc = 1.45 x 10(-4); relative risk = 12.25). This finding adds evidence to other data suggesting that immunologic phenomena are involved in pathologic scarring. Moreover, the results presented here have allowed an identification of a genetically determined risk factor for hypertrophic scar formation located in the HLA region.

Abstract
A continuous tumor cell line (LAP-35) was established from a primitive neuroectodermal tumor of bone from the right tibia of a 12-year-old female. The neural character of the cell line was documented by the spontaneous growth of neurites and by the presence of several neural markers, including neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S-100 protein, neurofilaments, chromogranin A, synaptophysin and positivity to monoclonal antibodies UJ127.11, UJ13A, UJ181.4. Cell-sorter analysis showed a high expression of nerve growth factor receptor (NGFr) and major histocompatibility complex class I-related molecules. A unique cytogenetic profile was observed, including a reciprocal chromosomal translocation (rct) 11:22 (q24;q12), typically associated with Ewing's sarcoma and neuroepithelioma, and deletion of the short arm of chromosome 1 (lp-), otherwise a feature of neuroblastoma. N-myc proto-oncogene was neither amplified nor expressed, whereas the expression of c-myc was documented by northern blot analysis. These features distinguish this new cell line from previously reported neuroectodermal cell lines, identifying LAP-35 as a unique model of a group of neural bone tumors that share characteristics of neuroblastoma as well as neuroepithelioma.

Abstract
Villous adenomas of the duodenum are rare, and malignancy is discovered in about 30% of the lesions. The authors describe two cases of villous adenoma of the second portion of the duodenum (13 and 8 cm in diameter). The diagnosis was obtained through endoscopy, which did not demonstrate any malignant change. In both patients, malignant change was shown by intraoperative frozen sections, and a pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. Review of the literature and the authors' experience indicate endoscopic biopsies do not rule out the presence of malignancy in adenomatous pathology of the duodenum. Therefore, laparotomy should be performed whenever endoscopic excision of the neoplasm is not feasible. The authors emphasize the importance of an intraoperative diagnosis based on accurate frozen sections and propose a correct procedure to obtain the best results.

Abstract
Histological, immunological, and cytogenetic analysis of the same neoplastic tissues have been performed on seven patients with peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL). Clonal chromosomal abnormalities in five cases are reported. The most common chromosomal aberration, observed in four patients, is a rearrangement of chromosome 14 with a breakpoint in q11.2. Aberrations of chromosome 8 also occurred in four patients, three of whom had an extra 8q. The data indicate that breakpoints of malignant diseases affecting similar cell types might cluster to specific chromosomal regions, which can be helpful in recognition and classification of PTCL.

Abstract
Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis (XC) is a chronic inflammatory lesion of the gallbladder histologically characterized by the presence of varying amounts of foamy histiocytes in the inflammatory infiltrate. In this study a review of 63 cases selected from 1207 surgically removed gallbladder is presented; the percentage found (5.2%) is slightly higher than that of previous reports showing that XC is less uncommon than generally believed. A detailed microscopic study is performed: the authors observed according to the histological features particularly the different patterns of distribution of the inflammatory infiltrate and postulate the existence of three subtypes of XC: multinodular, focal and diffuse XC. Finally, the main etiopathogenetic hypotheses are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Mononuclear phagocytes exhibit complex interactions with cancer cells and might contribute to fibrin formation associated with malignancy through the production of procoagulant activity (PCA). We have studied the PCA of peritoneal macrophages in 8 patients with advanced (stages III or IV) ovarian cancer and of macrophages from regional lymph nodes in 14 patients with limited (stages I or II) uterine cancer; peritoneal and lymph-node macrophages from patients with benign gynecological tumors were used as reference cell populations. In all patients, PCA of blood monocytes was also studied. Peritoneal and lymph-node macrophages obtained from patients with ovarian and uterine cancer, respectively, expressed far higher levels of basal PCA than the corresponding cell populations from patients with benign tumors (p less than 0.001). PCA of blood mononuclear cells from patients with ovarian, but not with uterine cancer, was significantly higher (p less than 0.001) than that of control cells. High levels of D-dimer, a specific product derived from plasmin-induced degradation of stabilized fibrin, were found in all ascitic fluids and in all plasma samples but one from patients with ovarian cancer. In contrast, all controls and all uterine cancer patients but one had normal plasma D-dimer. Our findings suggest that local activation of host macrophages for PCA production might contribute to fibrin formation within the tumoral mass. In advanced cancer, blood monocytes may also be activated to produce PCA and thus contribute to activation of intravascular coagulation and, possibly, to thrombo-embolic complications frequently associated with disseminated malignancy.

Abstract
We report on a patient with acute promyelocytic leukemia diagnosed at the 22nd week of pregnancy. She received chemotherapeutic treatment and reached a complete remission. At the 28th week of gestation the patient delivered, by cesarean section, a normal male infant. At present the mother is still disease-free 27 months after diagnosis. The child, too, is in good health. We point out the possibility of producing live babies with current chemotherapy regimens without exposing either the mother or the fetus to excessive risks.

Abstract
This report describes the clinical results obtained from a multicentre experience of the use of autologous and allogenic cultured human epidermal cells in the treatment of partial and full skin thickness burns. A laboratory has been organized to supply cultured epithelium to Burns Units in different cities. From May 1986 to December 1988, 58 patients with an age range of 1 to 59 years, and with burns covering between 7 and 95 per cent of the body surface area, have been treated. Graftable cultured epithelium can be frozen and remain viable if stored in a skin bank. Such grafts were used successfully to treat patients with partial and full skin thickness wounds.

Abstract
Cytogenetic specimens were obtained from bone marrow 24-hour cultured cells in 22 patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia, including six with microgranular variant. A t(15;17) was identified in 10-100% of metaphase cells from 13 patients. We have found no correlation between complete remission percentage and karyotype. Our data suggest that each laboratory, as far as M3 and M3V are concerned, must study its own culture time as it relates to numerous parameters involving tumoral cell kinetics.

Abstract
Three FDA licensed HIV-1 viral lysate and two nonlicensed recombinant antigen assays were used to evaluate six serially diluted plasma samples and 2 highly characterized seroconversion series. The sensitivity as measured by serial dilution did not necessarily correlate with the sensitivity as measured by seroconversion performance with the lysate and the recombinant assays. It is concluded that national licensing agencies should arrange to share seroconversion panels to evaluate accurately the sensitivity of new HIV-1 screening tests.

Abstract
The plasma concentration of the immunoreactive (IR) human atrial natriuretic factor (hANF) was measured in 17 patients with primary IgA nephropathy (IgAN) (9 normotensive and 8 hypertensive subjects without impairment of renal function). Furthermore, correlations with the renin-angiotensin II-aldosterone system and hemodynamic alterations were studied. The mean value of IR-hANF was significantly (p less than 0.002) higher in normotensive IgAN patients (68.2 +/- 14.6 pg/ml) than in controls (48.8 +/- 11.5 pg/ml), while it was slightly and not significantly elevated in hypertensive IgAN patients (58.5 +/- 8.4 pg/ml). In the latter the mean plasma renin activity (PRA) was significantly increased (0.92 +/- 0.30 ng/ml/h; p less than 0.002), while in normotensive IgAN patients (0.68 +/- 0.58 ng/ml/h) no difference was observed. Plasma aldosterone levels showed the same behavior pattern as those of PRA. Hemodynamic studies showed that the mean values of the cardiac index (CI) were significantly (p less than 0.002) high in both normotensive (3.55 +/- 0.5 l/min/m2) and hypertensive (3.32 +/- 0.47 l/min/m2) patients, while a significant reduction in the total peripheral resistance index (TPRI) in normotensive (2171 +/- 349 dyn/s/cm-5/m2; p less than 0.02) and a significant increase in hypertensive (2959 +/- 440 dyn/s/cm-5/m2; p less than 0.05) patients were observed. The mean arterial pressure (MAP) had a positive correlation with the TPRI and an inverse correlation with the IR-hANF.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
An infant with E.E.C. Syndrome (a genetic condition characterized by: Ectrodactyly, Ectodermal dysplasia, Cleft Lip-Palate) and delayed psychomotor development was found to have chronic hypernatremia and absence of thirst. Computerized brain tomography revealed abnormal lateral ventricles, agenesis of corpus callosum, calcified cortex. His plasma Anti Diuretic Hormone (ADH) levels were inappropriately low relative to his high values of plasma osmolality, whereas ADH responsiveness to nonosmotic stimuli was normal. E.E.C. Syndrome in this baby is characterized by: ectrodactyly of the feet, syndactyly of the 3rd and 4th finger of the hands, bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate, bilateral microtia, lacrimal ductular stenosis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a case of chronic hypernatremia in conjunction with normal ADH stores, congenital abnormalities of brain structures, and E.E.C. syndrome.

Abstract
The induction of sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs), chromosomal aberrations and cell-cycle delay was determined in human lymphocytes after treatment in vitro and in vivo with therapeutic ultrasound (u.s.). In vitro treatments (1 W/cm2; 0.860 MHz; for 40-160 sec) were performed on unstimulated lymphocytes from 9 donors: a statistically significant, dose-dependent increase in SCE frequency was produced, whereas no induction of chromosomal aberrations nor alteration of the distribution of 1st, 2nd and 3rd division metaphases were observed. The same increase in the frequency of SCEs was detected by treating in vitro stimulated lymphocytes with u.s. The effects of in vivo exposure to u.s. were detected on lymphocytes from 10 patients before, during and after u.s. therapy (0.6-1.0 W/cm2; 0.860 MHz; from 8 to 20 applications lasting 5-6 min each). SCE frequency was statistically significantly increased in all patients at mid-therapy, without a further increase during the second half of therapeutic cycle, and was restored to pretreatment level 3 months after the end of u.s. therapy. No increase in chromosomal aberrations was noticed during and after u.s. therapy, whereas erratic delays of the cell cycle were observed, not clearly related to u.s. application or SCE levels. A linear relationship was found between SCE frequency and age in 21 healthy donors.

Abstract
Evidence is presented which is consistent with a specific retrograde labeling of cholinergic neurons following [3H]choline application in their zone of termination. [3H]Choline injection in the rat hippocampus leads to perikaryal retrograde labeling in the ipsilateral medial septal nuclease and nucleus of the diagonal band, thus delineating an established cholinergic pathway, while only diffuse presumably anterograde labeling was observed in the lateral septum, the entorhinal cortex, and the opposite hippocampus. After [3H]choline injection in the pigeon visual Wulst, only the ipsilateral thalamic relay, of all inputs, showed similar perikaryal retrograde labeling, an observation supporting the suggestion that at least some thalamo-Wulst neurons are cholinergic.

Abstract
Kainic acid is known to induce characteristic lesions in neurons receiving an intact input with presumed glutamate-mediated neurotransmission. There are indications for glutamate as a transmitter of retinal afferent terminals in the pigeon optic tectum. After tectal injection of kainic acid (0.5-2.0 microgram in 0.5 microliter) the optic tectum was studied by light and electron microscopy and the following changes were observed: (a) within 1-48 h important neuropil vacuolization predominantly in lower part of layer 5. Such vacuoles were sometimes postsynaptic to identified retinal afferent terminals: (b) within 1 h to 21 days progressive neuronal cell loss throughout the tectal layers. These toxic effects were not observed 2-12 weeks after contralateral retinal ablation but could partially be restored by combined glutamate (0.2 mg) and kainate injection. Thus in the pigeon tectum, kainic acid neurotoxicity is dependent upon an intact retinal input, a finding consistent with a special role for glutamate - possibly as a transmitter - in retinal terminals.

Abstract
A Y chromosome with satellites at the end of the long arm is reported. The banding techniques RBG, GTC, C and N were used. C-banding revealed a reduction of the heterochromatic part of the chromosome. The pedigree of the family didn't show any pathological feature in the carriers of this morphological variation. The frequency of satellite association was also studied.

Abstract
Partial trisomy of the long arm of chromosome 4 was observed in two related patients, a child aged 2 years and a woman aged 42. Cytogenetic investigation revealed that their chromosome anomalies were due to segregation of a familial balanced translocation t(4;18)(q27;p11). Some clinical and cytogenetic considerations are noted.

Abstract
Clinical and cytogenetic data of two related patients, both trisomic for the segment 4q27 to qter, are reported. Familial studies determined that the mothers of the two probands were carriers of the same balanced translocation between chromosomes 4 and 18. Altogether, two partial trisomies 4q, five balanced karyotypes, and one 45,X0 karyotype were found in the family. The 18 cases reported to date are reviewed with respect to the karyotype-phenotype correlation.
