[In vivo localization of labeled monoclonal antibody 3G9 against human gastric cancer in tumor-bearing nude mice]

3G9 is one of murine monoclonal antibodies against human gastric cancer produced by immunization of multiple human gastric cancer cell lines in sequence in our institute. In vitro 3G9 had a high specific binding capacity with human gastric cancer tissues and cell lines. 131I-labeled 3G9 and 125I-labeled normal murine IgG were injected into nude mice bearing xenograft or cells M85 and MGC803 of human gastric cancer in order to compare the differences between 3G9 and IgG distributions in tumor and various normal tissues. The distribution of radioactivity in vivo suggested that 131I-3G9 had a good ability of localization in tissues of gastric cancer. The tumor/blood, tumor/liver, tumor/stomach and tumor/muscle ratios were 1.23, 4.72, 7.25 and 10.28, respectively. The localization index of tumor was 2.62 at 48 hr and 4.13 at 96 hr. The radioactivity of 125I-IgG in tumor was much lower than that of 131I-3G9 and tended to decrease with time. The results of scintigraphy showed that there was distinct radioactivity in the tumor. In this group of nude mice, the minimum weight and diameter of tumor was 83 mg and 4 mm, respectively. The method of scintigraphy to analyse variation of radioactivity in tumor-bearing nude mice was established. The results showed that monoclonal antibody 3G9 could be useful in localization and treatment of human gastric cancer.

Cross-cultural studies of dementia: Use of a Chinese version of the Blessed-Roth Information-Memory-Concentration test in a Shanghai dementia survey

A culturally adapted Chinese version of the Blessed-Roth Information-Memory-Concentration test (CIMC) was used in a dementia screening survey of a probability sample of 5,055 elderly Shanghai residents. The individual items on the CIMC that best predicted the overall score were similar to the best predictor of an American version of the IMC. Performance on the CIMC was markedly affected by the level of education or lack thereof. In a subsample for whom clinical diagnoses were obtained, it was possible to establish cutoff values on the CIMC by stratifying the sample according to education.

A Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination; impact of illiteracy in a Shanghai dementia survey

A dementia screening survey was carried out in Shanghai using a culturally adapted Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination. A probability sample of 5055 community-dwelling elderly in Shanghai was surveyed, 1497 aged 55-64, 2187 aged 65-74, and 1371 aged 75 and over. In the 73.3% of the subjects who had gone to school, using the age and education adjustments suggested by Kittner et al. (1986), [Kittner et al. J Chron Dis 39: 163-170; 1986] suitable cutoff scores could readily be selected to identify the subjects who should be examined intensively for the presence of dementia. However, in the 26.7% who had not gone to school, there was a significant increase in low scores on the mental status test as well as a different error pattern, reflecting the lack of formal education. Methods for following cognitive changes in illiterate individuals need further development.

[Planned multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of advanced carcinoma of the tongue]

16 patients with advanced lingual carcinoma treated by planned multidisciplinary treatment and postoperative reconstruction in our hospital from 1970 to 1984 are reported. The treatment included: preoperative chemotherapy of high dose MTX; extensive resection of the tongue with radical neck dissection and postoperative radiation. The immediate reconstruction was performed by using pedicled major pectoralis myocutaneous flap in 12 patients and free tensor fascia lata myocutaneous flap in 4. The 5 and 3 year survival rates of stage IV lesions were 50% and 100%. The advantages of the planned multidisciplinary treatment of advanced lingual cancer are discussed.
