Abstract
Swiss national requirements for measuring radon gas exposures demand a lower detection limit of 50 kBq h m(-3), representing the Swiss concentration average of 70 Bq m(-3) over a 1-month period. A solid-state nuclear track detector (SSNTD) system (Politrack, Mi.am s.r.l., Italy) has been acquired to fulfil these requirements. This work was aimed at the calibration of the Politrack system with traceability to international standards and the development of a procedure to check the stability of the system. A total of 275 SSNTDs was exposed to 11 different radon exposures in the radon chamber of the Secondary Calibration Laboratory at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland. The exposures ranged from 50 to 15000 kBq h m(-3). For each exposure of 20 detectors, 5 SSNTDs were used to monitor possible background exposures during transport and storage. The response curve and the calibration factor of the whole system were determined using a Monte Carlo fitting procedure. A device to produce CR39 samples with a reference number of tracks using a (241)Am source was developed for checking the long-term stability of the Politrack system. The characteristic limits for the detection of a possible system drift were determined following ISO Standard 11929.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pre-clinical research has shown β2 -adrenoceptors to be essential for the antiallodynic action of antidepressant drugs in murine models of neuropathic pain and that sustained treatment with β2 -agonists has an antiallodynic action. Here, we clinically investigated whether chronic β2 -agonist treatments may influence the incidence of post-thoracotomy chronic pain, defined as pain that recurs or persists along a thoracotomy scar more than 2 months after surgery, either neuropathic or non-neuropathic. METHODS We conducted an epidemiological study on patients operated by thoracotomy. Demographic data, medical history and treatments concomitant to the surgery were recorded at a follow-up visit. Information on perioperative treatments was collected from the anaesthesia records and confirmed by the patients. In patients with pain at the surgery level, post-thoracotomy chronic pain was assessed by clinical examination and numeric scale. Physical examination and DN4 questionnaire were used to discriminate neuropathic and non-neuropathic chronic pain at scar level. RESULTS One hundred and eighty-nine patients were included. Eighty-one patients reported persisting thoracic pain, with neuropathic characteristics in 58 of them (30% of the 189 patients). The most common chronic drugs during the perioperative period were inhaled β2 -agonists (28.6%). The chronic use of β2 -agonists was an independent predictor of thoracic neuropathic pain (but not of non-neuropathic pain) and was associated with a five-fold decrease in the relative incidence of neuropathic pain [OR = 0.19 (0.06-0.45)]. CONCLUSIONS These data suggest a possible influence of chronic β2 -agonist treatments on neuropathic pain secondary to thoracotomy. This apparent preventive effect of β2 -agonist treatments should warrant controlled clinical trials.

Abstract
Genetic and phenotypic analysis of two complementary maize panels revealed an important variation for biomass yield. Flowering and biomass QTL were discovered by association mapping in both panels. The high whole plant biomass productivity of maize makes it a potential source of energy in animal feeding and biofuel production. The variability and the genetic determinism of traits related to biomass are poorly known. We analyzed two highly diverse panels of Dent and Flint lines representing complementary heterotic groups for Northern Europe. They were genotyped with the 50 k SNP-array and phenotyped as hybrids (crossed to a tester of the complementary pool) in a western European field trial network for traits related to flowering time, plant height, and biomass. The molecular information revealed to be a powerful tool for discovering different levels of structure and relatedness in both panels. This study revealed important variation and potential genetic progress for biomass production, even at constant precocity. Association mapping was run by combining genotypes and phenotypes in a mixed model with a random polygenic effect. This permitted the detection of significant associations, confirming height and flowering time quantitative trait loci (QTL) found in literature. Biomass yield QTL were detected in both panels but were unstable across the environments. Alternative kinship estimator only based on markers unlinked to the tested SNP increased the number of significant associations by around 40% with a satisfying control of the false positive rate. This study gave insights into the variability and the genetic architectures of biomass-related traits in Flint and Dent lines and suggests important potential of these two pools for breeding high biomass yielding hybrid varieties.

Abstract
Abstract
This retrospective administrative claims study of women diagnosed with advanced or metastatic breast cancer (BC) compared clinical histories and BC treatment by receipt of HER2- targeted agents (2TA), disease stage, and age group.
Women ≥ 18 years, diagnosed with stage III or IV BC were selected from the 2008-2012 Truven Health MarketScan databases using ICD-9-CM codes on non-diagnostic medical claims corresponding to BC and local or distant metastases; date of first metastasis was the index date. Patients were followed until the earliest of end of enrollment, inpatient death or 12/31/2012. Those with <12 months continuous enrollment (CE) or non-BC primary cancers pre-index, or HIV or pregnancy anytime were excluded. 2TA was defined as ≥1 medical or pharmacy claim for trastuzumab or lapatinib in the pre- or post-index periods. Study cohorts were women ± 2TA use, 2TA users with stage III and IV BC, and 2TA users age 18-44, 45-64, or 65+ at index. Index demographics, pre-index BC and clinical histories, and post-index BC treatments were compared using t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and chi-square statistics.
Of 30,660 eligible women, 14.4% received 2TA at sometime. Compared to non-2TA patients those with 2TA were younger (mean (SD) age 55 (11) vs. 59 (13) years; p≤0.001) and had significantly lower comorbidity burden. While pre-index BC was similar (48% each), 2TA patients had higher rates of pre-index BC surgery (20% vs. 17%), adjuvant/neoadjuvent chemotherapy (74% vs. 53%), radiation treatment (12% vs. 10%), and lower non-2TA biologics use (0% vs. 3%), all p<0.005. Of the 2TA cohort with pre-index BC, 58% used 2TA pre-index. Also among 2TA patients, 57% had Stage III BC at index and 18% were 18-44, 68% 45-64 and 15% 65+. Pre-index BC diagnosis differed by index BC stage (30% III vs. 73% IV) and increased with age (44% 18-44, 48% 45-64, 54% 65+), both p<0.001.
Of those with ≥ 3 months CE post-index, 2TA users had higher rates, p<0.001 of BC surgery (53% vs. 47%), radiation (65% vs. 54%) and non-2TA antineoplastic treatment (AT: 89% vs. 83%), compared to non-2TA patients. Of those treated, 2TA users had a higher rate of chemotherapy use (85% vs. 58%), but lower use rates of hormone therapy (56% vs. 78%) and non-2TA biologics (5% vs. 8%), all p<0.001. Receipt of post-index BC surgery was greater among 2TA stage III than stage IV patients (78% vs. 19%) and decreased with age (62% 18-44, 53% 45-64, 42% 65+), both p<0.001. Post-index, stage III 2TA patients were more likely (p<0.001) to have radiation therapy (72% vs. 56%), use 2TA agents post-index (97% vs. 91%), and other AT (92% vs. 84%) compared to stage IV 2TA patients. Radiation declined in the 2TA cohort post-index with increasing age (70%, 65%, 61%, p<0.001). 2TA and AT use also declined with increasing age but these did not reach statistical significance.
Receipt of 2TA (vs. non-2TA) was significantly associated with younger age and receipt of pre- and post- BC treatments. Clinical history and BC treatment differences between these cohorts partly reflect differential treatment patterns of HER2- positive and HER2- negative BC patients. Treatment characteristics for the 2TA cohort differ by disease stage and age group.

Abstract
Atom interferometers covering macroscopic domains of space-time are a spectacular manifestation of the wave nature of matter. Because of their unique coherence properties, Bose-Einstein condensates are ideal sources for an atom interferometer in extended free fall. In this Letter we report on the realization of an asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometer operated with a Bose-Einstein condensate in microgravity. The resulting interference pattern is similar to the one in the far field of a double slit and shows a linear scaling with the time the wave packets expand. We employ delta-kick cooling in order to enhance the signal and extend our atom interferometer. Our experiments demonstrate the high potential of interferometers operated with quantum gases for probing the fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics and general relativity.

Abstract
The care of patients, suffering from acute, chronic, or malignant pain, requires systematic and interprofessional collaboration between all team members to ensure a holistic approach to pain management. In doing so, the different professions are often in a competitive, tense, or dependent relationship resulting from a lack of precise definitions and concepts regarding their responsibilities in the wide field of pain management. Considering pain management as a whole, we can define numerous interfaces concerning competencies and tasks which may open up some new perspectives on concepts of interprofessional education (IPE). Internationally, there have been many attempts to establish concepts of interprofessional education, and it is considered a great challenge to improve continuing medical education. However, interdisciplinary subjects like pain management may benefit from it. Apart from enhancing specialized knowledge, interprofessional education aims to consider the different roles, skills, and responsibilities as well as interprofessional strategies of decision-making. In Germany, only a few efforts have been made with regard to interprofessional pain education. In the following paper, different challenges, tasks, and roles within the field of pain management are discussed in the sense of potential areas of collaboration in the context of interprofessional education. Against this background, the Regensburg model for interprofessional pain management education is described as one national program to enhance the effectiveness of pain management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to conduct an audit of a university inpatient pain consultation service and to examine the quality and the implementation of the recommended therapeutic measures. Factors that influenced the implementation should be identified. PATIENTS AND METHODS All inpatients treated by the consultation service in the years 2009 and 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. Demographic patient characteristics as well as quality parameters of the consultation service and pharmacological and non-pharmacological recommendations and their implementation were analyzed. RESULTS In total 1,048 requests for the consultation service were processed of which 39.7% of the requests were for patients with acute pain, 33.8% with chronic and 19.9% with tumor-associated pain. Measures recommended most were medication, physiotherapy and psychological treatment. Recommended medications were actually prescribed in more than 80%, physiotherapy recommended in about 75% and psychological treatment recommended in 47% of the cases. Only a few influencing factors for the implementation of the recommended measures could be identified. CONCLUSION Many different pain states are seen in an inpatient pain consultation service. The recommendations given are implemented in most cases especially concerning the medication.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Laparoscopy is a complex technique where incidents related to equipment failure/malfunction commonly occur. The purpose of the WHO preoperative safety checklist is to significantly reduce surgically associated complications and mortality. GOAL The goal of this study was to show that a preoperative checklist for laparoscopy could improve procedure efficiency by reducing lost time due to these incidents. MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective study compared the occurrence of incidents related to equipment, patient installation and the time loss attributed to these incidents, before and after the initiation of a preoperative checklist. Two hundred consecutive laparoscopic procedures (appendectomies and cholecystectomies) were studied; the first hundred without the preoperative checklist and the second hundred after the initiation of this laparoscopic checklist. RESULTS The risk of at least one incident to occur during the procedure was increased 3-fold ([1.36 vs. 6.64], P=0.007) when the checklist was not used compared to when the preoperative checklist was used. Likewise, the number of incidents increased 2.4-fold ([1.15; 5.01], P=0.02), compared to when the preoperative checklist was used. The checklist significantly reduced the proportion of incidences during which time was lost from 22% to 10% (P=0.03). CONCLUSION A preoperative checklist for laparoscopic procedures is feasible and seems useful to prevent adverse events in the operating room.
