Abstract
Ten patients with locally advanced breast cancer were given doxorubicin i.v., and an incision biopsy was subsequently taken. Doxorubicin autofluorescence was examined using computerized laser scanning microscopy, and microvessels were immunostained in the same sections. Overlays of both pictures revealed doxorubicin gradients in tumor islets with high concentrations in the periphery and low concentrations in the center of the tumor islets. Gradients were most pronounced shortly after the injection, but they could still be detected 24 h later. No gradients were observed in connective tissue. This study demonstrates a serious risk of the drug not reaching all of the cancer cells in those cases in which the cancer cells are densely packed in islets. The efficacy of drug treatment will thus depend on the histology of the tumor tissue.

Abstract
AIM To analyse the expression of multidrug resistance (MDR) related proteins at different steps in colorectal carcinogenesis. METHODS The presence of three MDR related proteins (Pgp, MRP1, and LRP/MVP) was studied by means of immunohistochemistry in normal, adenomatous, and malignant colorectal epithelium. Formaldehyde fixed, paraffin embedded tissue sections of 17 samples of colorectal tissue were used (normal mucosa, n = 4; adjacent mucosa, n = 5; adenoma, n = 5; carcinoma, n = 3). RESULTS For all three proteins, expression was found in the surface epithelium and the upper parts of the crypts in normal colon. In the adenomas, staining was seen along the complete length of the crypts. In the carcinomas analysed, all epithelium showed positive staining. Mucosa adjacent to either carcinoma or adenoma showed staining patterns mostly resembling those of normal mucosa, but sometimes some extension of staining was seen along the crypt. CONCLUSIONS These proteins already show increased expression in the adenoma stage. In the absence of adequate mucin production in adenomas, MDR related proteins could be an important factor in protecting the epithelium against further environmentally induced genetic damage. This could be one of the reasons why only about 5% of colorectal adenomas will actually progress to carcinomas.

Abstract
The clinical picture with, among other things, muscular swelling, fever and nocturnal sweating in three males aged 30, 37 and 52 years, suggested a neoplasm and sepsis. Ultimately, they were found to suffer from focal myositis, localized nodular myositis and polymyositis, respectively. The ESR and leukocyte counts were increased, the serum creatinine kinase (CK) activity was normal or slightly increased. The symptoms decreased after prednisone treatment. Both localized and generalized inflammatory muscular diseases may be present without the serum CK activity being raised.

Abstract
Photo(chemo)therapy is used widely, and ultraviolet (UV) sources, protocols and indications are numerous. A survey was carried out to examine how photo(chemo)therapy is employed in private practice and to determine whether safety guidelines are respected. A questionnaire survey sent to Belgian, French and Dutch dermatologists generated 593 useful responses. UV sources, doses of UV and 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP), as well as the frequency of the treatment, were all different in the three countries. UV starting doses were rarely chosen according to the minimal phototoxic dose (MPD) or to the minimal erythema dose (MED). Total cumulative UV doses were not always determined. Maintenance PUVA therapy for psoriasis was still performed by 15 to 40% of dermatologists in the respective countries. Another striking fact was that genital protection is not universal. On the other hand, the irradiance of tubes is checked regularly, and contraindications are respected. Despite the availability of guidelines, clinicians seem to be inconstant in their assessment of the carcinogenic risk of UV radiation.

Abstract
A 36-year-old woman was referred to the department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, University Hospital Vrije Universiteit, because of complaints of hoarseness. A submucosal swelling of the right ventricular fold was found that was subsequently biopsied. Histopathological examination showed a low-grade B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). Treatment consisted of local radiotherapy (to 2800 cGy). During the 2-year follow-up to date there has been no evidence of recurrent disease. To our knowledge, only four cases of MALT lymphomas in the larynx have been reported. The clinical behavior of MALT lymphoma is clearly quite distinct and requires proper recognition to prevent inadvertent misdiagnosis of overtreatment.

Abstract
The multidrug resistance protein 1 (MRP1) gene encodes a transporter protein that helps to protect cells against xenobiotics. Elevated levels of MRP1 in tumor cells can result in active extrusion of a wide range of (anticancer) drugs with different cellular targets, a phenomenon called multidrug resistance (MDR). To explore the protective function of the mouse mrp1 protein during drug treatment, we investigated the toxicity caused by the anticancer drug etoposide-phosphate (ETOPOPHOS) in mice lacking the mrp1 gene (mrp1(-/-) mice). We show here that the lack of mrp1 protein results in increased etoposide-induced damage to the mucosa of the oropharyngeal cavity and to the seminiferous tubules of the testis. The high concentrations of mrp1 that we find in the basal layers of the oropharyngeal mucosa and in the basal membrane of the Sertoli cells in the testis apparently protect wild-type mice against this tissue damage. We also find drug-induced polyuria in mrp1(-/-) mice, which correlates with the presence of mrp1 protein in the urinary collecting tubules, the major site of kidney water reabsorption. Our results indicate that specific inhibitors of MRP1 used to reverse MDR, in combination with carcinostatic drugs transported by MRP1, might lead to drug-induced mucositis, (temporary) infertility, and diabetes insipidus.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate which growth factors, receptors, and growth inhibiting factors are expressed in invasive breast cancer. Five (angiogenic) growth factors and their receptors: platelet-derived growth factor A chain (PDGF-AA) and PDGF receptor alpha (PDGF alpha R), PDGF-BB and PDGF beta receptor, transforming growth factor alpha (TGF alpha) and its receptor epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors vascular endothelial growth factor receptor I (Flt-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor II (Flk-1/KDR); two growth inhibiting factors: transforming growth factor-beta-1 (TGF beta 1) and (TGF beta 2) and their receptor couple transforming growth factor beta receptor I (TGF beta R-I) and TGF beta R-II; and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) were stained by standard immunohistochemistry on frozen sections in 45 cases of invasive carcinoma of the breast. Staining was scored as negative or positive in tumour epithelium, stroma, and blood vessels. TGF beta 1 and TGF beta 2 were expressed in the tumour cells in 67 per cent and 76 per cent of cases, respectively, whereas PDG beta R and TGF beta R-II were expressed in 0 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively. The other factors showed variable expression in tumour cells. All factors were expressed in the stroma in most cases, except Flt-1, Flk-1/KDR, TGF beta 2, and TGF beta R-II, which showed variable expression, and EGFR, which showed no expression. The endothelium was in most cases positive for bFGF, PDGF-AA, PDGF-BB, VEGF, PDGF alpha R, PDGF beta R, and TGF beta 1 but TGF beta/ was negative in most cases and TGF alpha, EGFR, Flt-1, Flk-1/KDR, TGF beta R-I, and TGF beta R-II were variably expressed. The most interesting possible auto/paracrine loops, as demonstrated on serial sections and by fluorescence double staining, were the TGF alpha/EGFR, TGF beta s/TGF beta R, VEGF/Flt-1, and the VEGF/Flk-1 combinations. In conclusion, growth factors, growth inhibiting factors, and their receptors are frequently expressed in invasive breast cancer. Indications for some possible auto- and paracrine loops have been found, which should encourage further study on the role of these factors in breast cancer proliferation and angiogenesis.

Proliferation was determined by assessment of the mitotic activity index (MAI) and the degree of angiogenesis was measure by counting the number of microvessels (microvessel density: MVD) in the most vascularized area of the tumour. bFGF and EGFR showed positive correlations with the MAI, while TGF beta 2 showed a negative correlation. Expression of bFGF, TGF alpha, TGF beta 2, and EGFR correlated positively with the MVD. Co-expression of the TGF alpha/EGFR growth factor/receptor combination showed a stronger correlation with the MAI and the MVD than EGFR or TGF alpha alone, and the TGF beta 2/TGF beta R-I/TGE beta R-II combination showed a positive correlation with the MVD. In conclusion, the expression of several growth factors, growth factor receptors and growth-inhibiting factors showed correlations with the rate of proliferation and the degree of angiogenesis in invasive breast cancer. Some growth factor/receptor combinations showed stronger correlations with proliferation and angiogenesis than the growth factor or receptor alone, pointing to the importance of possible auto- and paracrine loops for stimulation of proliferation and angiogenesis by growth factors and their receptors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In vitro studies have shown that amplification and overexpression of the cyclin D1 gene can accelerate the progress of cells through the G1 phase. Therefore, cyclin D1 may have an apoptosis inhibiting effect. The retinoblastoma (Rb) gene was shown recently to be an important regulator of apoptosis. AIMS To evaluate whether expression of the cyclin D1 and Rb genes correlated with apoptotic counts in a group of 97 invasive breast cancers. METHODS Expression of the cyclin D1 and Rb genes was detected by standard immunnohistochemistry using paraffin wax embedded sections. Apoptotic cells were counted according to a strict protocol, in 10 fields of vision systematically spread over the most poorly differentiated area of the tumour, at a magnification of x630. Apoptotic cells counts were expressed as apoptotic cells/mm2. RESULTS Cyclin D1 overexpression was found in 49% of cases. Loss of Rb expression was found in 44% of cases, and occurred particularly in poorly differentiated tumours. Cyclin D1 and Rb expression showed a positive correlation (p = 0.003). Apoptotic counts varied from 1 to 62/mm2. There were no significant correlations between cyclin D1 overexpression and apoptotic counts in the total group or in the retinoblastoma protein (pRb) positive tumours. Loss of Rb expression also showed no correlation with apoptotic counts. CONCLUSIONS Cyclin D1 is frequently overexpressed in pRb positive tumours, but no evidence has been found for an anti-apoptotic effect of cyclin D1 overexpression or Rb expression in invasive breast cancer.

Abstract
Multidrug resistant cancer cells frequently overexpress the 110-kd lung resistance-related protein (LRP) as detected with the monoclonal antibody (MAb) LRP-56. Recently, we identified LRP as the major vault protein (MVP), which is the major constituent of vaults, multisubunit cellular organelles. Clinically, LRP/MVP expression in cancer at time of diagnosis provided a strong and independent prognostic factor for response to chemotherapy and outcome in different tumor types, notably acute myeloid leukemia and ovarian cancer. To facilitate additional immunohistopathological studies, we have optimized LRP/MVP detection in paraffin-embedded tissues using two monoclonal antibodies, LRP-56 and LMR-5. Blocking experiments showed that LRP-56 and LMR-5 MAbs detect different epitopes of LRP/MVP. Immunohistochemical studies with both MAbs in a panel of human multidrug resistant tumor cell lines, normal tissues, and colorectal tumors showed that LRP/MVP expression can be reliably detected after formalin-fixation and paraffm-embedding using overnight incubation at 4 degrees C with the primary MAbs at 5- to 10-fold higher concentrations (ie, 1 to 10 microg/ml) as currently used with frozen sections. Both streptavidin-biotin complex and alkaline phosphatase-anti-alkaline phosphatase techniques could be successfully used for signal-amplification. Staining quality did not benefit from antigen-retrieval pretreatments. The optimized staining methodology facilitates studies in archival material on the putative role of LRP/MVP in clinical drug resistance.

Since some multidrug-resistant (MDR) tumor cell lines show drug accumulation defects but do not over-express Pgp or MDR protein (MRP), a search was made for novel MDR-related transporter proteins by immunizing rats with non-small cell lung cancer SW- 1573/2R120 cells to produce monoclonal antibodies (MAbs). Five rat MAbs (LMR-4, -12, -42, -44 and -94) were generated, showing strong membranous staining of non-Pgp MDR SW- 1573/2R120 tumor cells and minimal reactivity to the corresponding parental and revertant cell lines. In addition, a 6th MAb (LMR-5) was isolated, recognizing the MDR-related lung resistance protein (LRP), previously identified as the major vault protein. The first 5 LMR MAbs show predominantly membranous staining of several non-Pgp MDR tumor cell lines of different histogenetic origins, except for LMR-4, which recognizes only MDR sublines of the SW- 1573 cell line. Flow-cytometric analysis revealed that all MAbs, except LMR-4 and -5, detect outside epitopes. Functional studies showed that these MAbs did not restore the daunorubicin accumulation defect. All but one of the MAbs (LMR-42) showed staining of distinct normal human tissues, notably epithelial cells lining the airways and digestive tract. In addition, staining of vascular endothelial cells was found with all MAbs except LMR-4. Three MAbs (LMR-12, -44 and -94) showed remarkable immunoreactivity with vincristine-selected SW- 1573 sublines. By immunoblotting and precipitation, the LMR antigens were found to be in the 42-69 kDa range.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Growth factors play a role in proliferation and motility of malignant glial cells, through autocrine and paracrine mechanisms. Also, proliferation of non-tumour cells, e.g., endothelial cells, is likely to be controlled by growth factors. Several growth factors with their appropriate receptors can be involved, but studies on tissue specimens evaluating this in glioma are rare. MATERIALS AND METHODS We evaluated the potential role of Transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) and Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R), the Platelet-derived growth factor A- and B-chain (PDGF-A and PDGF-B) and its receptors (PDGFR alpha and PDGFR beta, and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in gliomas by analysing 86 of these tumours on the single cell level for the presence of immunoreactive growth factors and receptors. In a few cases double-staining experiments were done to directly visualize co-expression of factor and receptor. RESULTS Multiple growth factors and their receptors are present in astrocytic tumours; the higher the grade, the more growth factors and the more positive cells are found. Oligodendroglial tumours and pilocytic astrocytomas showed little expression. Autocrine and paracrine mechanisms were frequently possible in the astrocytic tumours, often more than one loop could be involved. Interestingly, it was also frequently possible that non-tumour cells produced a growth factor for which the tumour cells expressed the receptor. CONCLUSIONS Multiple growth factors appear to be involved in astrocytic tumours, with frequent autocrine and paracrine loops. Expression of these molecules seems to increase with increasing grade. The results argue for a contribution of non-tumour cells to the growth of a tumour.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the number of terminal cancer patients receiving continuous intrathecal infusion of opioids and local anesthetics for relief of pain increases, we decided to investigate the post-mortem findings of the spinal cord, meninges and nerve roots of patients after continuous intrathecal administration of morphine and combined with bupivacaine. METHODS Neurohistopathological findings were obtained from 10 cancer patients [2 men and 8 women, 29-69 (median 52) yrs old] and 4 controls [4 men, 46-75 (median 64) yrs old]. The cancer patients had been treated for a mean of 98 (range 8-452) d with morphine/NaCl 0.9% or morphine/bupivacaine, administered through a polyamide lumbar catheter. Concomitant radiation therapy and chemotherapeutic drugs had been given to 5 and 6 patients, respectively. Cumulative doses of morphine ranged from 22 to 3895 mg, those of bupivacaine from 0 to 3250 mg and of sodium metabisulfite (antioxidant) from 0.6 to 97.4 mg. RESULTS No macroscopic abnormalities of the catheter tract, dura, leptomeninges, nerve roots or spinal cord were found. Microscopically, focal foreign body giant cells were seen in 2 cases in the area of the catheter pathway both without any sign of inflammation. In one case treated for 103 d, an intrathecal reaction was found. This consisted of small aggregates of lymphocytes predominantly in the leptomeninges and focally in the cord parenchyma. No abnormalities were found in the other cases when using hematoxylin-eosin and Kluver or Bodian stained specimens, indicating neither myelin nor axonal damage. Microglial reactions were similar in both cancer patients and controls. CONCLUSION The discrete and limited neurohistopathological findings in both catheter patients and controls suggest that intrathecal infusion of morphine and bupivacaine via a polyamide catheter is devoid of significant neurotoxic effects in cancer patients.

Abstract
Oligoastrocytomas form a poorly defined subgroup of glial tumors, and few clinical series have been reported. We performed a retrospective study to elucidate the histopathological features of these tumors and to relate the clinical signs and symptoms and proliferative potential to survival. Oligoastrocytomas were defined as glial tumors with at least 10% neoplastic astrocytes and 10% neoplastic oligodendrocytes; tumors were graded with the St. Anne-Mayo criteria for astrocytomas and oligodendrogliomas. Proliferative potential was estimated with antibodies against proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA). Median survival of 52 patients (median age, 42 years) was 75 weeks (range 2-703 weeks). Actuarial 1-, 2-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates were 67%, 43%, 40%, and 29%, respectively. For 15 patients with grade 3 and 33 with grade 4 lesions (St. Anne-Mayo astrocytoma classification), median survival was 217 and 55 weeks, respectively. For 19 patients with grade 2 and 33 with grade 3 lesions (St. Anne-Mayo oligodendroglioma classification), median survival was 305 and 55 weeks, respectively. Interobserver agreement between three experienced neuropathologists on identification of astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and unclassifiable cells was low, indicating considerable subjectivity in the histopathological diagnosis. Median PCNA labeling indices correlated with tumor grade, but individual values varied so widely within grades that they had no predictive value for survival. In a multivariate analysis, symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and microvascular proliferation were independently associated with poor prognosis. The biological behavior of subgroups appeared to be distinctly less aggressive than that of 'pure' astrocytomas of similar grade. Better histopathological definition of oligoastrocytomas and improved assessment of percentages of constituent cell types may allow more accurate prognosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the prognostic value of p53, bcl-2, bax, and neovascularization in radically resected non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS Tumors from 116 patients were assessed by immunohistochemistry for expression of p53 (DO7 and PAb1081), bcl-2, and the quantification of microvessel density (CD-31). In addition, the expression of bax was assessed in 61 stage I tumors. The median levels of expression of each marker were used as cutoff points. RESULTS p53 was not correlated to any patient or tumor characteristic, whereas bcl-2 showed higher expression in squamous cell carcinomas (P < .001). bax expression was significantly related with male sex (P = .006) and adenocarcinoma type (P = .0013). p53 status, assessed with one monoclonal antibody (MoAb), was not predictive for survival; however, the combination of staining results obtained with two MoAbs identified the DO7-/PAb1801+ tumors as those with the worst prognosis. bcl-2 expression was associated with longer survival in stage I patients (P = .0169). The combined group expressing p53+(PAb1801)/bcl-2- had the worst survival in stage I patients (P = .034) and in the whole series in comparison with the other combinations of the two oncoproteins. bax expression alone had no influence on survival of stage I patients, but patients with bax+/bcl-2- tumors had the worst prognosis (P = .02 in comparison with bax+/bcl-2+). Tumor neovascularization was not related with other factors, and patients with CD-31+ tumors had a shorter survival duration than those with CD-31- tumors only in stage II (P = .0283). By multivariate analysis including all patients, the presence of p53+/ bcl-2- tumor expression and large tumor diameter (> or = 4cm) were independent prognostic factors for shorter survival duration. For stage I, only the presence of bax+/ bcl-2- tumor expression had a significant negative influence on survival. CONCLUSION The interaction and the regulation of new biologic markers, such as those involved in the apoptotic pathway, are complex. Combinations of the expression of several of them may give more valuable information than the study of just one. Prognostic influence of p53 staining varied depending on the choice of antibody and the combination of bcl-2- together with p53+ (PAb1801) or with bax+ had the worst influence on survival for patients with stage I NSCLC.

Abstract
Drug resistance plays an important role in chemotherapy failure in breast cancer. We studied the expression of MDR1, MRP, LRP, DNA topoisomerases, p53 and Ki-67 in different groups of breast cancer patients in relation to chemotherapy. Tissues from 6 normal breasts and 20 primary operable, 40 locally advanced and 10 anthracycline-resistant metastatic breast cancers were assessed. Sequential samples of the same patient were available from 17 patients with locally advanced breast cancer undergoing neo-adjuvant chemotherapy and in 7 metastatic patients undergoing paclitaxel treatment. Protein expression was investigated by immunohistochemistry. Significantly higher protein expression was observed for Pgp, Ki-67 and p53 in the locally advanced breast cancers than in primary operable breast cancers. No other significant differences in protein expression were found among the 3 breast cancer groups. Expression of none of the markers that could be assessed (Pgp, MRP, LRP, p53 and Ki-67) in locally advanced breast cancer had predictive value for pathological response. Interestingly, after chemotherapy a significant decrease in percentage of Ki-67 positive tumor cells was observed, whereas the other markers did not vary substantially. Furthermore, considering all breast cancer samples, a cumulative dose of doxorubicin >400 mg/m2 inversely correlated with Ki-67 positivity. However, 2 patients with a pathological complete remission had only 5-10% Ki67-positive tumor cells before chemotherapy, indicating that Ki67 negativity itself is not responsible for chemoresistance. In conclusion, none of the known proteins related to multidrug resistance predicted response to chemotherapy in breast cancer, and resistant clones left behind generally had a low proliferation rate.

Abstract
The authors report migratory transient osteoporsis of the ipsilateral hip and ankle in a patient with ostengenesis imperfecta. The diagnosis was made with modern imaging techniques (magnetic resonance imaging, bone scintigraphy, and dual energy xray absorptiometry). Histologic examination after bone biopsy of the proximal femur showed possible microfractures. The treatment consisted of a regimen of nonweightbearing. One year after onset, the patient had no symptoms and no residual evidence of transient osteoporosis on radiographic studies. The etiology of transient osteoporosis in patients who have osteogenesis imperfecta is uncertain. The authors' findings suggest that microfractures may play a role in the early pathophysiologic process.

Abstract
The presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was studied in specimens of 50 primary non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) of the salivary gland and the oral cavity and 11 solitary adenolymphomas of the parotid gland, using EBER-1/2 in situ hybridisation and by immunohistochemistry for the detection of latent membrane-protein-1 (LMP-1). None of the patients were tested for HIV-infection, nor were there any clinical signs to suspect HIV-infection. In one adenolymphoma, few reactive EBER-1/2 positive cells were detected. In this case staining for LMP-1 was negative. In one oral B-cell NHL, EBER-1/2 positive lymphoma cells were identified; these cells also expressed LMP-1. None of the 31 oral (30 B-cell and one T-cell) and 18 salivary gland (all B-cell) NHLs and none of the 10 adenolymphomas were EBER-1/2 positive or expressed LMP-1. These results indicate that EBV is not involved in the pathogenesis of oral and salivary gland primary NHL and adenolymphoma in immunocompetent patients.

Abstract
Cyclin D1 overexpression, detected by standard immunohistochemistry, was correlated with other prognostic variables and its prognostic value was evaluated in a group of 148 invasive breast cancers with long-term follow-up. Overexpression of cyclin D1 (59% of cases) was negatively correlated (chi 2 test) with histological grade (P = 0.0001), mean nuclear area (P = 0.004), mean nuclear volume (P = 0.02), and mitotic activity (P = 0.03) and positively correlated with estrogen receptor (P = 0.0001). There was a strong correlation between cyclin D1 overexpression and histological type (P = 0.0001). Positive cyclin D1 staining was seen in 11 of 13 tubular carcinomas, 3 of 3 mucinous carcinomas, 4 of 4 invasive cribriform carcinomas, and 17 of 20 lobular carcinomas. Of 102 ductal cancers, 52 were positive, and all 6 medullary carcinomas were negative. There were no significant correlations with lymph node status, tumor size, or DNA ploidy. In survival analysis, cyclin D1 overexpression did not provide significant univariate or multivariate prognostic value. In conclusion, cyclin D1 is mainly overexpressed in the well differentiated and lobular types of invasive breast cancer and is strongly associated with estrogen receptor positivity. It is negatively correlated with the proliferation marker mitoses count and with the differentiation markers nuclear area and nuclear volume. However, cyclin D1 overexpression does not seem to have prognostic value in invasive breast cancer when no adjuvant treatment is given.

Abstract
We studied the appearance of retinoblastoma on unenhanced and gadolinium-enhanced images and the accuracy of tumour staging with MR imaging. The MR images were obtained in 18 children with retinoblastoma and compared with histopathological findings after enucleation. The MR imaging included T1-weighted and dual-echo T2-weighted images before, and T1-weighted images after, gadopentetate dimeglumine injection. The contrast between tumour and ipsilateral vitreous strongly increased (57 %) after gadolinium on T1-weighted images (p = 0.004). Tumour was strongly hypointense as compared with ipsilateral vitreous in all patients using heavily T2-weighted (TE = 120 ms) images (p = 0.001). The estimated T2 of tumour (mean 96 + 14 ms) did not correlate with histological grading or degree of calcification. Unenhanced T1-weighted MR images rightfully excluded extrascleral growth in 16 of 16 cases, but its presence was confirmed after enucleation in only one of 2 abnormal MR scans. Invasion of the optic nerve behind the cribriform plate was confirmed in 2 of 3 abnormal gadolinium-enhanced MR scans, but also in 1 of the 15 cases in which MR images were normal. The T2-weighted images were useful in assessing retinal detachment. We conclude that heavily T2-weighted images, unenhanced T1-weighted images and gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted MR images are complementary in characterizing and staging retinoblastoma.

Abstract
PURPOSE The effects of estrogen only on prostate tissue were studied in 9 aging male transsexuals who had undergone orchiectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Prostate volume was measured by ultrasound. Biopsies were stained for prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), prostate specific antigen (PSA), Ki-67 and sex steroid receptors. RESULTS Prostates were small, and biopsies showed PAP and PSA in most cases. No malignancy was found. Few androgen receptors were detectable but there were ample estrogen and progesterone receptors in stroma and epithelium. CONCLUSIONS Prostates were small after long-term estrogens only. The sex steroid receptor content was considerably changed. PSA and PAP in the specimens suggested that their production does not depend on testicular androgens alone.
