Abstract
Bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on material surfaces represent a serious problem in society from both an economical and health perspective. Surface coating approaches to prevent bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation are of increased importance due to the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacterial strains. Effective antimicrobial surface coatings can be based on an anti-adhesive principle that prevents bacteria to adhere, or on bactericidal strategies, killing organisms either before or after contact is made with the surface. Many strategies, however, implement a multifunctional approach that incorporates both of these mechanisms. For anti-adhesive strategies, the use of polymer chains, or hydrogels is preferred, although recently a new class of super-hydrophobic surfaces has been described which demonstrate improved anti-adhesive activity. In addition, bacterial killing can be achieved using antimicrobial peptides, antibiotics, chitosan or enzymes directly bound, tethered through spacer-molecules or encased in biodegradable matrices, nanoparticles and quaternary ammonium compounds. Notwithstanding the ubiquitous nature of the problem of microbial colonization of material surfaces, this review focuses on the recent developments in antimicrobial surface coatings with respect to biomaterial implants and devices. In this biomedical arena, to rank the different coating strategies in order of increasing efficacy is impossible, since this depends on the clinical application aimed for and whether expectations are short- or long term. Considering that the era of antibiotics to control infectious biofilms will eventually come to an end, the future for biofilm control on biomaterial implants and devices is likely with surface-associated modifications that are non-antibiotic related.

Abstract
In this paper, we have prepared a stimuli-responsive polymer modified gadolinium doped iron oxide nanoparticle (poly@Gd-MNPs) as cancer theranostic agent. The responsive polymer is composed of the poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide)-co-tyrosine unit, which shows excellent loading for the anti-cancer drug (methotrexate) and stimuli dependent release (change in pH and temperature). The in vitro experiment revealed that the poly@Gd-MNPs exhibited T1-weighted MRI capability (r1=11.314mM(-1)s(-1)) with good in-vitro hyperthermia response. The prepared poly@Gd-MNPs has generated quick heating (45°C in 2min) upon exposure to an alternating magnetic field and able to travel a distance of 35cm in 1min in the presence of an external magnet. The poly@Gd-MNPs shows 86% of drug loading capacity with 70% drug release in first 2h. The cytotoxic assay (MTT) demonstrated that the nanoparticle did not affect the viability of normal human fibroblast and efficiently kill the MCF7 cancer cells in the presence of an external magnetic field. To explore the uptake of poly@Gd-MNPs in the cells, bright field cell imaging study was also performed. This study provides a valuable approach for the design of highly sensitive polymer modified gadolinium doped iron oxide-based T1 contrast agents for cancer theranostics.

Abstract
Recently, the nanostructured modified molecularly imprinting polymer has created a great attention in research field due to its excellent properties such as high surface to volume ratio, low cost, and easy preparation/handling. Among the nanostructured materials, the carbonaceous material such as 'graphene' has attracted the tremendous attention of researchers owing to their fascinating electrical, thermal and physical properties. In this review article, we have tried to explore as well as compile the role of graphene-based nanomaterials in the fabrication of imprinted polymers. In other words, herein the recent efforts made to introduce selectivity in graphene-based nanomaterials were tried collected together. The major concern of this review article is focused on the sensing devices fabricated via a combination of graphene, graphene@nanoparticles, graphene@carbon nanotubes and molecularly imprinted polymers. Additionally, the combination of graphene and quantum dots was also included to explore the fluorescence properties of zero-band-gap graphene.

Abstract
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a multisystem disorder that is associated with number of complications. Patient's awareness and practices are crucial components in reducing the burden of diseases and its complications. Aim: To assess patient's knowledge about their disease and its complications, practices, treatment seeking behavior and average expenditure incurred by its management. Subjects and Methods: A community based cross-sectional study was conducted in rural and urban slum areas of Delhi selecting a total of 98 diabetic patients diagnosed during the two community surveys and interviewed using pretested and predesigned questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS software, version 17 (Chicago II, USA). Chi-square, fisher or Mann–Whitney tests were used for test of significance and considered statistically significant at P < 0.05. Results: Of 98 participants, 31.6% (31/98) were from urban slum area, and 68.4% (67/98) were from the rural area. In both urban and rural areas, majority were Hindu, married, literate and unemployed. Significantly less subjects (61.3%, 19/31) of urban slum area than of rural area (85.1%, 57/67) could name at least one complication of DM (P < 0.01, odds ratio [OR] =3.6, 95% confidence interval [CI] =1.3–9.6). Majority of participants in both urban slum and rural area have knowledge about at least one component of management but significantly lesser in urban (83.9%, 26/31) than rural area (97.0%, 65/67) were reported (P = 0.02, OR = 6.2, 95% CI = 1.1–34.2). Significantly more subjects (29.0%, 9/31) in urban slum area than rural areas (7.5%, 5/67) reported that they were not taking any treatment for DM (P < 0.01, OR = 0.2, 95% CI = 0.1–0.6). In urban area, 32.2% (10/31) patients told that it is a burden on their family while in rural area 44.7% (30/67) of the patients told that they have to squeeze money from the family expenditure to afford drugs. Conclusion: Patients need to be made aware of the asymptomatic phase of DM and its long term complications. At the same time, efforts should be made to sensitize them about the importance of taking regular treatment and management.

Abstract
In this study, nanocomposite of graphene oxide and silane modified magnetic nanoparticles (silane@Fe3O4) were synthesized in a form of dendritic structure. For this, silane@Fe3O4 nanoparticle gets sandwiched between two layers of graphene oxide by chemical synthesis route. The synthesized dendritic structure was used as a monomer for synthesis of europium ion imprinted polymer. The synthesis of imprinted polymer was contemplated onto the surface of the vinyl group modified silica fiber by activated generated free radical atom-transfer radical polymerization, that is, AGET-ATRP technique. The synthesized dendritic monomer was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, VSM, FE-SEM, and TEM analyses. The imprinted polymer modified silica fiber was first validated in the aqueous and blood samples for successful extraction and detection of europium ion with limit of detection = 0.050 pg mL(-1) (signal/noise = 3). The imprinted polymer modified silica fiber was also used for preconcentration and separation of europium metal ion from various soil samples of coal mine areas. However, the same silica fiber was also used for wastewater treatment and shows 100% performance for europium removal. The findings herein suggested that dendritic nanocomposite could be potentially used as a highly effective material for the enrichment and preconcentration of europium or other trivalent lanthanides/actinides in nuclear waste management.

Abstract
In this work, we have prepared water-soluble superparamgnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with a dual responsive polymer for targeted delivery of anticancer hydrophobic drug (curcumin) and hyperthermia treatment. Herein, superparamagnetic mixed spinel (MnFe2O4) was used as a core material (15-20 nm) and modified with carboxymethyl cellulose (water-soluble component), folic acid (tagging agent), and dual responsive polymer (poly-N isopropylacrylamide-co-poly glutamic acid) by microwave radiation. Lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the thermoresponsive copolymer was observed to be around 40 °C, which is appropriate for drug delivery. The polymer-SPIONs show high drug loading capacity (89%) with efficient and fast drug release at the desired pH (5.5) and temperature (40 °C) conditions. Along with this, the SPIONs show a very fast increase in temperature (45 °C in 2 min) when interacting with an external magnetic field, which is an effective and appropriate temperature for the localized hyperthermia treatment of cancer cells. The cytocompatibility of the curcumin loaded SPIONs was studied by the methyl thiazol tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, and cells were imaged by fluorescence microscopy. To explore the targeting behavior of curcumin loaded SPIONs, a simple magnetic capturing system (simulating a blood vessel) was constructed and it was found that ∼99% of the nanoparticle accumulated around the magnet in 2 min by traveling a distance of 30 cm. Along with this, to explore an entirely different aspect of the responsive polymer, its antibacterial activity toward an E. coli strain was also studied. It was found that responsive polymer is not harmful for normal or cancer cells but shows a good antibacterial property.

Abstract
Accommodation may be restored to presbyopic lenses by refilling the lens capsular bag with a soft polymer. After this accommodative lens refilling prevention of capsular opacification is a requirement, since capsular opacification leads to a decreased clarity of the refilled lens. It has been hypothesized that capsular fibrosis causing the capsular opacification results in increased stiffness of the lens capsular bag, therewith contributing to a decrease in accommodative amplitude of the lens. However, the change in viscoelastic properties of refilled lenses due to capsular fibrosis has never been measured directly. In this study we examined natural lenses from enucleated porcine eyes and refilled lenses directly after refilling and after three months of culturing, when capsular fibrosis had developed, and determined their viscoelastic properties with a low load compression tester. Control refilled lenses were included in which capsular opacification was prevented by treatment with actinomycin D. We related lens stiffening to the degree of capsular opacification, as derived from the microscopic images taken with a confocal laser scanning microscope. Overall, the refilled lenses directly after refilling were softer than refilled lenses after three months of culturing, and refilled lenses treated with actinomycin D were softer compared with untreated refilled lenses. The degree of capsular opacification as assessed by microscopy corresponds to an increase in lens stiffness. This indicates that the viscoelastic properties of the refilled lens are influenced by capsular fibrosis and modulated by treatment of the lens epithelium. In conclusion, this study shows that the development of capsular fibrosis negatively affects the viscoelastic properties of isolated, cultured refilled lenses.

Abstract
We summarize different studies describing mechanisms through which bacteria in a biofilm mode of growth resist mechanical and chemical challenges. Acknowledging previous microscopic work describing voids and channels in biofilms that govern a biofilms response to such challenges, we advocate a more quantitative approach that builds on the relation between structure and composition of materials with their viscoelastic properties. Biofilms possess features of both viscoelastic solids and liquids, like skin or blood, and stress relaxation of biofilms has been found to be a corollary of their structure and composition, including the EPS matrix and bacterial interactions. Review of the literature on viscoelastic properties of biofilms in ancient and modern environments as well as of infectious biofilms reveals that the viscoelastic properties of a biofilm relate with antimicrobial penetration in a biofilm. In addition, also the removal of biofilm from surfaces appears governed by the viscoelasticity of a biofilm. Herewith, it is established that the viscoelasticity of biofilms, as a corollary of structure and composition, performs a role in their protection against mechanical and chemical challenges. Pathways are discussed to make biofilms more susceptible to antimicrobials by intervening with their viscoelasticity, as a quantifiable expression of their structure and composition. Recalcitrance of biofilms against mechanical and chemical challenges has been looked at for ages from a microbiological perspective, but an approach based on viscoelastic properties of biofilms yields new insights in this recalcitrance.

Abstract
In the present study a simple, accurate, precise, economical and specific UV-spectrophotometric method for estimation of besifloxacin in bulk and in different pharmaceutical formulation has been developed. The drug shows maximum λmax289 nm in distilled water, simulated tears and phosphate buffer saline. The linearity range of developed methods were in the range of 3-30 μg/ml of drug with a correlation coefficient (r2) 0.9992, 0.9989 and 0.9984 with respect to distilled water, simulated tears and phosphate buffer saline, respectively. Reproducibility by repeating methods as %RSD were found to be less than 2%. The limit of detection in different media was found to be 0.62, 0.72 and 0.88 μg/ml, respectively. The limit of quantification was found to be 1.88, 2.10, 2.60 μg/ml, respectively. The proposed method was validated statically according to International Conference on Harmonization guidelines with respect to specificity, linearity, range, accuracy, precision and robustness. The proposed methods of validation were found to be accurate and highly specific for the estimation of besifloxacin in different pharmaceutical formulations.

Abstract
Wear resistant and ultralow friction in synovial joints is the outcome of a sophisticated synergy between the major macromolecules of the synovial fluid, e.g., hyaluronan (HA) and proteoglycan 4 (PRG4), with collagen type II fibrils and other non-collagenous macromolecules of the cartilage superficial zone (SZ). This study aimed at better understanding the mechanism of PRG4 localization at the cartilage surface. We show direct interactions between surface bound HA and freely floating PRG4 using the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). Freely floating PRG4 was also shown to bind with surface bound collagen type II fibrils. Albumin, the most abundant protein of the synovial fluid, effectively blocked the adsorption of PRG4 with HA, through interaction with C and N terminals on PRG4, but not that of PRG4 with collagen type II fibrils. The above results indicate that collagen type II fibrils strongly contribute in keeping PRG4 in the SZ during cartilage articulation in situ. Furthermore, PRG4 molecules adsorbed very well on mimicked SZ of absorbed HA molecules with entangled collagen type II fibrils and albumin was not able to block this interaction. In this last condition PRG4 adsorption resulted in a coefficient of friction (COF) of the same order of magnitude as the COF of natural cartilage, measured with an atomic force microscope in lateral mode.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rongmei tribe (Kooki), are inhabitant of the Charoi Chagotlong village, Tupul, Tamenglong district of Manipur have the traditional knowledge of folk bio-medicine based on diverse plant species for the prevention and cure of certain chronic diseases. The aim of this study was to document and preserve the indigenous knowledge of the Rongmei tribe on folk medicines. MATERIAL AND METHODS The present work was based on methodical field survey conducted between 2010, to 2013. Local people of within 30-70 age groups of both sexes were interviewed and a group discussion (using a structured interview schedule), was held to know about the type of plant parts used in folk bio-medicines, and their mode of use. The interviewers were drawn from a wide array of disciplines (Vendors, Farmers club, NGO's, scientific societies, etc.), to obtain maximum information in relation to folk bio-medicine. RESULTS A total of 60 species belonging to 36 different families (ranging from gymnosperm to angiosperm with medicinal benefits), were discussed briefly with significant emphasis on their local name, scientific name, family, parts used; they claimed to cure various ailments from these plants in this mode of folk bio-medicine. The different plant parts used were leaves, fruits, bulbs, bark, roots, seeds, tuber, trunk, flower, shoot, whole plant, rhizome, stem, wood and berries. Based on a life form of the reported plants comprise herbs, shrubs, trees, grasses, bulb, vine, climber, tuber and succulent. CONCLUSION Efforts should be made to promote the use of traditional biomedicines within rural communities to preserve the traditional knowledge.
