Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effectiveness of dexamethasone in bacterial meningitis in the subcategories of causative organism and timing and nature of antibiotic therapy. DATA SOURCES MEDLINE, HEALTHLINE, and AIDSLINE were searched with the Medical Subject Headings "dexamethasone" and "meningitis" in any language. Bibliographies, conference abstracts, and the authors of identified studies were consulted. STUDY SELECTION Randomized, concurrently controlled trials of dexamethasone therapy in childhood bacterial meningitis published from 1988 to November 1996 were selected. Of 16 studies identified, 5 were not eligible. DATA EXTRACTION Data were extracted by means of standard outcomes in a protocol sent to all principal authors. DATA SYNTHESIS Random-effects meta-analysis models were used to obtain summary estimates. As the incidence of severe hearing loss differed significantly by organism among control subjects, organism-specific estimates were used. In Haemophilus influenzae type b meningitis, dexamethasone reduced severe hearing loss overall (combined odds ratio [OR], 0.31; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.14-0.69). Similar ORs were obtained after studies were stratified by the timing of administration of dexamethasone (before or with antibiotics vs later) or by type of antibiotic (cefuroxime vs other). In pneumococcal meningitis, only studies in which dexamethasone was given early suggested protection, which was significant for severe hearing loss (combined OR, 0.09; 95% CI, 0.0-0.71) and approached significance for any neurological or hearing deficit (combined OR, 0.23; 95% CI, 0.04-1.05). For all organisms combined, the pooled OR suggested protection against neurological deficits other than hearing loss but was not significant (OR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.34-1.02). Outcomes were similar in studies that used 2 vs more than 2 days of dexamethasone therapy. Adverse effects were not significantly increased with dexamethasone except for secondary fever. The incidence of gastrointestinal tract bleeding increased with longer duration of dexamethasone treatment (0.5% in controls, 0.8% with 2 days of treatment, 3.0% with 4 days of treatment). CONCLUSIONS The available evidence on adjunctive dexamethasone therapy confirms benefit for H influenzae type b meningitis and, if commenced with or before parenteral antibiotics, suggests benefit for pneumococcal meningitis in childhood. Limiting dexamethasone therapy to 2 days may be optimal.

Abstract
The Mr 8,000 light chain originally identified in Chlamydomonas flagellar dynein is also a component of both cytoplasmic dynein and myosin V. Furthermore, this small protein has been implicated as an inhibitor of neuronal nitric oxide synthase, suggesting that it may play multiple regulatory roles within the cell. Covalent cross-linking of both dynein and myosin V using 1,5-difluoro-2, 4-dinitrobenzene revealed that this light chain exists as a dimer in situ. This observation was confirmed using two additional amine-selective cross-linking reagents (dimethyl pimelimidate and disuccinimidyl suberate). When expressed as a C-terminal fusion with maltose-binding protein, the presence of the light chain caused the recombinant molecule to dimerize. Analysis of fusions containing truncated light chains identified the predicted amphiphilic helix (residues 14-32) as sufficient to cause dimerization; cross-linking required a second helical segment (residues 33-46). Together the data presented suggest that two light chains interact to form a parallel dimeric structure. This arrangement has significant implications for the potential functions of this highly conserved molecule and suggests a mechanism by which it might dissociate nitric oxide synthase.

Abstract
Molecular analysis of a 19,000-Mr protein from the Chlamydomonas flagellum reveals that it is homologous to the t complex-encoded protein Tctex-2, which is a candidate for one of the distorter products that cause the extreme transmission ratio distortion (meiotic drive) of the murine t complex. The 19,000-Mr protein is extracted from the axoneme with 0.6 M NaCl and comigrates with the outer dynein arm in sucrose density gradients. This protein also is specifically missing in axonemes prepared from a mutant that does not assemble the outer arm. These data raise the possibility that Tctex-2 is a sperm flagellar dynein component. Combined with the recent identification of Tctex-1 (another distorter candidate) as a light chain of cytoplasmic dynein, these results lead to a biochemical model for how differential defects in spermiogenesis that result in the phenomenon of meiotic drive might be generated in wild-type vs t-bearing sperm.

Abstract
Adaptive compensation of enzymatic activities is common among cold-living poikilotherms. Their enzymes often demonstrate higher activities at low temperatures than do homologs from temperate or thermophilic species. To understand the molecular features necessary for cold adaptation of microtubule motor proteins, we have initiated studies of the flagellar dynein ATPases of Antarctic fishes (body temperature range = -1.8 to +2 degrees C). Dyneins were isolated by high-salt extraction of demembranated sperm axonemes from the Antarctic yellowbelly rockcod, Notothenia coriiceps. Although solubilization of inner arms was incomplete, an inner arm dynein was recognized as a discrete complex containing one major dynein heavy chain (DHC) and sedimenting through sucrose gradients at approximately 12 S. Like inner arm dyneins from Chlamydomonas, the fish complex contained an actin-immunoreactive protein of 43 kDa and a 30-kDa protein. One isoform of the inner arm DHC gene family of N. coriiceps was detected by the polymerase chain reaction, and Southern analysis established that this DHC gene is present at one copy per haploid genome. Outer arm dynein was extracted quantitatively by high-salt treatment, contained two DHCs (one major, one minor), and sedimented through sucrose gradients as a polydisperse, aggregating system. Associated with the outer arm DHCs were five presumptive intermediate chains (ICs) of 66-91 kDa, immunologically defined by their cross-reactivity to four monoclonal antibodies specific for ICs from other organisms. The basal (non-microtubule-stimulated) specific ATPase activities of the N. coriiceps inner and outer arm dyneins were approximately 0.07 and approximately 0.04 micromol of P(i) min(-1) mg(-1), respectively, at 0 degrees C, attained their maxima (approximately 0.1 micromol of P(i) min(-1) mg(-1)) at 9 and 19 degrees C, respectively, and at higher temperatures declined substantially. Furthermore, the activities of the fish dyneins at temperatures < or = 15 degrees C were significantly larger than that of outer arm dynein from the mesophile Tetrahymena. These results suggest that the greater catalytic efficiencies of N. coriiceps inner and outer arm dyneins at low temperatures are due to enhanced polypeptide flexibility in the active sites of their protein subunits. We conclude that temperature adaptation of flagellar dyneins from Antarctic fishes is compatible with substantial conservation of primary and quaternary structure.

This pilot study compared the toxicity of a one hour with a four hour amphotericin B infusion in children. There were more severe chills in the former group on the first day of infusion, and more hypotension in the latter group over the study duration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To review the impact of routine follow-up cranial computed tomography (CT) scans on the management of children with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. DESIGN Longitudinal data collected from 58 HIV-infected children followed in one center for mean of 3.8 +/- 1.8 years. SETTING HIV/AIDS pediatric program following over 90% of the identified HIV-infected children in one region in Canada. RESULTS The baseline CT scans showed intracranial abnormalities in 35 of 58 children (60%). In five children with basal ganglia calcifications (BGC) without cerebral atrophy, there has not been progressive encephalopathy. For the 43 children who had serial CT scans for routine follow-up, 34 (79%) had changes in the scans that were concordant with the clinical assessment. In all but five children with progressive ventricular and sulcal dilatation on CT scan, there was simultaneous clinical evidence of encephalopathy. Those five children were already on antiretroviral therapy, and therapy was not changed in response to the CT scan findings. CONCLUSION Baseline CT scans provide useful diagnostic and prognostic information. Further research is needed to evaluate the role of cranial CT imaging in the management of pediatric HIV encephalopathy.

Abstract
This article describes the use of a newly-developed measure of parents' perceptions of health care providers' behaviours (Measure of Processes of Care-MPOC) to evaluate the family centredness of children's rehabilitation services. The measure was developed with the participation of more than 1600 parents of children with chronic neurodevelopmental conditions throughout Ontario. It assesses five domains: enabling and partnership; providing general information; providing specific information about the child; coordinated and comprehensive care; and respectful and supportive care. By comparing the perceptions of parents receiving services from three different types of organizations or programmes, we demonstrated that the MPOC can pick up differences between parents in their experiences of caregiving. We also demonstrated that the MPOC is able to detect differences in how parents view the family-centredness of services provided by individual centres. The data indicate that the MPOC has appreciable utility in providing programmes and services with a description of their current level of family-centred service as perceived by parents. The strengths, limitations and potential uses of the measure in other contexts are discussed.

Abstract
Mammalian brain cytoplasmic dynein contains three light chains of Mr = 8,000, 14,000, and 22,000 (King, S. M., Barbarese, E., Dillman, J. F., III, Patel-King, R. S., Carson, J. H., and Pfister, K. K. (1996) J. Biol. Chem. 271, 19358-19366). Peptide sequence data (16/16 residues correct) implicate the Mr = 14,000 polypeptide as Tctex-1, a protein encoded within the mouse t-complex. Tctex-1 cosediments with microtubules and is eluted with ATP or salt but not with GTP as expected for a dynein subunit. The ATP-eluted protein precisely cosediments with known cytoplasmic dynein proteins in sucrose density gradients. Tctex-1 also is immunoprecipitated from brain and other tissue homogenates by a monoclonal antibody raised against the 74-kDa cytoplasmic dynein intermediate chain. Quantitative densitometry indicates that Tctex-1 is a stoichiometric component of the dynein complex. As Tctex-1 is a candidate for involvement in the transmission ratio distortion (meiotic drive) of mouse t-haplotypes, these results suggest that cytoplasmic dynein dysfunction may play an important role in non-mendelian chromosome segregation.

Abstract
The authors describe the development of a 56-item questionnaire, the Measure of Processes of Care (MPOC-56), designed to find out what parents of a child with a chronic health problem think of the services they and their child receive and of how those services affect psychosocial outcome. The instrument is internally consistent and is reliable on retests. Its validity was shown by positive correlations of its five scales with parents' satisfaction, and negative correlations with parents' stress in relation to services received. The MPOC-56 is a generic measure which can be used for clinical, quality assurance and research purposes.

Abstract
Sequence comparisons with the Mr 8,000 light chain from Chlamydomonas outer arm dynein revealed the presence of highly conserved homologues (up to 90% identity) in the expressed sequence tag data base (King, S. M. & Patel-King, R. S. (1995a) J. Biol. Chem. 270, 11445-11452). Several of these homologous sequences were derived from organisms and/or tissues that lack motile cilia/flagella, suggesting that these proteins may function in the cytoplasm. In Drosophila, lack of the homologous protein results in embryonic lethality (Dick, T., Ray, K., Salz, H. K. & Chia, W.(1996) Mol. Cell. Biol., 16, 1966-1977). Fractionation of mammalian brain homogenates reveals three distinct cytosolic pools of the homologous protein, one of which specifically copurifies with cytoplasmic dynein following both ATP-sensitive microtubule affinity/sucrose density gradient centrifugation and immunoprecipitation with a monoclonal antibody specific for the 74-kDa intermediate chain (IC74). Quantitative densitometry indicates that there is one copy of the Mr 8,000 polypeptide per IC74. Dual channel confocal immunofluorescent microscopy revealed that the Mr 8,000 protein is significantly colocalized with cytoplasmic dynein but not with kinesin in punctate structures (many of which are associated with microtubules) within mammalian oligodendrocytes. Thus, it appears that flagellar outer arm and brain cytoplasmic dyneins share a highly conserved light chain polypeptide that, at least in Drosophila, is essential for viability.

Abstract
In rodent, there is evidence that the orienting behaviour elicited by direct stimulation of the superior colliculus (SC) is partly mediated by contralateral descending projections, while avoidance-type behaviour is associated with ipsilateral descending projections. However, the identity of target structures in the brainstem which mediate these different behavioural responses is unknown. The c-fos immediate early gene is expressed polysynaptically in neurons in response to a wide range of extracellular stimuli, and hence has been proposed as a technique for mapping functional pathways. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to use the c-fos technique to investigate the functional specificity of brainstem regions which are innervated by the two main descending projections of the SC. Patterns of fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) were observed throughout the brainstem following electrical stimulation of the SC in Urethane-anaesthetized rats. Previously, the electrical stimulation had been shown to elicit either approach-like or avoidance-like movement. The main results of this experiment were; (i) animals in which the stimulation elicited defensive behaviour had elevated levels of immunostaining in specific terminal areas of the ipsilateral descending projections, e.g. the ventrolateral midbrain/pontine reticular formation, the cuneiform area and rostral periaqueductal grey; (ii) there was no FLI expression in any of the terminal areas of the crossed descending projection, even in animals where the electrical stimulation elicited approach. Control experiments showed that the lack of expression in the crossed descending pathway was not due to the restricted range of stimulation parameters used in the main study, or to the effects of the anaesthetic. In conclusion, this experiment was able to identify likely substrates for the mediation of defensive reactions elicited by tectal stimulation. However, given the total lack of expression in a pathway which is known to be activated, it also provides further evidence that c-fos cannot simply be used as a high resolution neuronal activity marker for mapping functional pathways.

Abstract
The authors compared mothers' and fathers' perceptions of professional caregiving, using the MPOC, a self-administered questionnaire for parents. The authors looked at the aspects of caregiving 128 couples judged to be important, their perceptions of the actual caregiving received from health professionals and their stress. The data, from a relatively large sample of intact families, indicated that there were more similarities than differences between the mothers' and fathers' replies. Both valued the enabling and partnership aspect of caregiving most highly. Only one difference in reported experience was found: mothers reported experiencing significantly more coordinated and comprehensive care than did their spouses. The clinical implications of the findings are discussed, particularly with respect to the involvement of fathers in clinical intervention, and the belief that fathers are uninterested in their children's care.

Abstract
Bone marrow transplant (BMT) recipients are routinely reimmmunized with the childhood vaccine series after transplantation excluding the live attenuated vaccines. In this study, the clinical and serologic responses to measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine in children after BMT was assessed. Twenty-two BMT recipients were vaccinated with MMR II (MSD). All were at least 2 years post-BMT and without GVHD. Their underlying conditions were leukemia (11), aplastic or Fanconi's anemia (7), thalassemia (3) and metabolic disease (1). All were allogeneic transplants with matched related donors. The mean age at transplantation was 6.9 years. There were no reported adverse effects of the vaccination. Antibody status for MMR was determined using commercial assays (IFA and ELISA) on paired specimens. The mean interval between transplantation and vaccination was 48 months. Pre-vaccination, no BMT recipient was sero-positive for all three, but 23% were positive for measles, 31% for mumps and 14% for rubella. Post-vaccination, 68% of BMT recipients were sero-positive for all three, with 77% for measles, 87% for mumps and 91% for rubella. Therefore, MMR vaccination at 2 years or later after BMT in paediatric recipients without GVHD was safe and significantly increased the proportion sero-positive for MMR.

Abstract
Four patients with functional hemispherectomy, one patient with a complete anatomical hemispherectomy, and one patient with unilateral removal of the temporal, parietal and occipital lobes took part in two sets of experiments designed to investigate their residual sensitivity to motion-in-depth in the hemianopic visual field. Two types of computer-generated visual displays were used; in the first set of experiments, a dot pattern and in the second, a circular checkerboard. These simulated either convergent, divergent or reversed rotational motion. Each set of experiments consisted of two parts; in the first part, electrodermal responses were monitored during stimulus presentation while the subjects performed a simple distracting task. In the second part, subjects were asked to state verbally the direction of stimulus motion. Contrary to expectations, no reliable changes in skin conductance were elicited from any of the subjects by changes in the direction of motion of the component parts of either the dot pattern display or the circular checkerboard display. Furthermore, none of the subjects were able to discriminate the direction of motion of the target patterns when presented in the hemianopic field. The most parsimonious explanation is that the subcortical visual pathways which survive hemispherectomy are unable to process visual information relating to motion in depth.

Abstract
We describe here the molecular cloning and analysis of the Mr 14,000 and 16,000 outer arm dynein light chains (DLCs) from Chlamydomonas flagella. Within the outer arm, the Mr 14,000 DLC apparently is associated with the intermediate chains at the base of the soluble dynein particle; the Mr 16,000 DLC interacts directly with the a dynein heavy chain. Sequence analysis indicates that both molecules are novel members of the thioredoxin superfamily and share approximately 30% sequence identity with thioredoxin from Penicillium. Both DLCs have a perfect copy of the thioredoxin active site (WCGPCK); the Mr 16,000 DLC also contains the canonical P-loop motif (AX4GKS). There is a single gene for both DLCs within Chlamydomonas and only single messages that were upregulated more than 10-fold upon deflagellation were observed on Northern blots. Both recombinant DLCs were specifically eluted from a phenylarsine oxide matrix with beta-mercaptoethanol indicating that they contain vicinal dithiols competent to undergo reversible oxidation/reduction. Furthermore, we demonstrate that outer (but not inner) arm dynein may he purified on the basis of its affinity for phenylarsine oxide suggesting that the predicted redox-sensitive vicinal dithiols exist within the native complex.

Abstract
Various residual visual capacities have been reported for the phenomenally blind field of hemispherectomized patients, providing evidence for the relative roles of cortical and subcortical pathways in vision. We attempted to characterize these functions by examining the ability of five patients to detect, localize, and discriminate high-contrast flashed, flickering and moving targets. Dependent measures were verbal, manual, and oculomotor responses. As a control for light scatter, intensity thresholds for monocular detection of targets in the hemianopic field were compared with thresholds obtained when using an additional half eyepatch to occlude the blind hemiretina of the tested eye. One unilaterally destriate patient was tested on the same tasks. In photopic conditions, none of the hemispherectomized patients could respond to visual cues in their impaired fields, whereas the destriate patient could detect, discriminate, and point to targets, and appreciate the apparent motion of stimuli across his midline. Under reduced lighting, the threshold luminance required by hemispherectomized patients to detect stimuli presented monocularly was similar to that required for their detection when all visual information was occluded in the blind field, and only available to the visual system indirectly via light scatter. In contrast, the destriate patient's monocular threshold in his blind field was substantially lower than that for stimuli directly occluded in the blind field. As we found no range of stimuli which the hemispherectomized patients could detect or discriminate that was not also associated with discriminable scattered light, we conclude that the subcortical pathways which survive hemispherectomy cannot mediate voluntary behavioural responses to visual information in the hemianopic field.

Abstract
We describe here the molecular cloning of the M(r) 18,000 dynein light chain from the outer arm of Chlamydomonas flagella. In vivo, this molecule is directly associated with the gamma dynein heavy chain. Sequence analysis indicates that this light chain is a novel member of the calmodulin superfamily of Ca2+ binding regulatory proteins; this molecule is 42, 37 and 36% identical to calmodulin, centrin/caltractin and troponin C, respectively, and also shows significant similarity to myosin light chains. Although four helix-loop-helix elements are evident, only two conform precisely to the EF hand consensus and are therefore predicted to bind Ca2+ in vivo. In vitro Ca2+ binding studies indicate that this dynein light chain (expressed as a C-terminal fusion with maltose binding protein) has at least one functional Ca2+ binding site with an apparent affinity for Ca2+ of approximately 3 × 10(−5) M. Within the Chlamydomonas flagellum, the transition from an assymmetric to a symmetric waveform (which implies an alteration in dynein activity) is mediated by an increase in intraflagellar Ca2+ from 10(−6) to 10(−1) M; this transition is altered in mutants that lack the outer arm. The data presented here suggest that a Ca(2+)-dependent alteration in the interaction of this dynein light chain with the motor containing heavy chain may affect outer arm function during flagellar reversal.

Abstract
A previous study (King et al., 1991. J. Biol. Chem. 266:8401-8407) showed that the 78,000-M(r) intermediate chain (IC78) from the Chlamydomonas outer arm dynein is in direct contact with alpha-tubulin in situ, suggesting that this protein may be involved in binding the dynein to the doublet microtubules. Molecular genetic analysis of this chain recently demonstrated that it is a WD repeat protein essential for outer arm assembly (Wilkerson et al., 1995.J. Cell Biol. 129:169-178). We have now transcribed and translated IC78 in vitro, and demonstrate that this molecule binds axonemes and microtubules, whereas a homologous protein (the 69,000-M(r) intermediate chain [IC69] of Chlamydomonas outer arm dynein) does not. Thus, IC78 is a bona fide microtubule-binding protein. Taken together with the previous results, these findings indicate that IC78 is likely to provide at least some of the adhesive force that holds the dynein to the doublet microtubule, and support the general hypothesis that the dynein intermediate chains are involved in targeting different dyneins to the specific cell organelles with which they associate. Analysis of the binding activities of various IC78 deletion constructs translated in vitro identified discrete regions of IC78 that affected the binding to microtubules; two of these regions are specifically missing in IC69. Previous studies also showed that IC78 is in direct contact with IC69; the current work indicates that the region of IC78 that mediates this interaction is coincident with two of IC78's WD repeats. This supports the hypothesis that these repeats are involved in protein-protein interactions within the dynein complex.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To gather information on which to base decisions about a general notification program for pediatric patients a decade after their receiving transfusions. DESIGN The physicians of a cohort of 1793 patients who underwent cardiac surgery were sent letters asking them to contact and counsel patients identified from cardiovascular surgery and blood bank databases about their risk for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Questionnaires were used to collect data about physicians' HIV practices; telephone interviews were conducted to collect information about patients' and parents' knowledge and attitudes about HIV and transfusions. Because of unexpected media interest, questionnaires and interviews were modified to include questions about the source of information. The HIV-testing status of patients reported by physicians was anonymously cross-referenced with specimens received by the Laboratory Services Branch, Ontario Ministry of Health, Toronto. SETTING A large Canadian pediatric tertiary care hospital in Toronto. PARTICIPANTS Seven hundred ninety-three patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass between 1980 and 1985. RESULTS The HIV Information Project successfully reached most (approximately 75%) of this cohort and, with the help of the media, many other at-risk transfusion recipients. The information was new for many; almost all informed wanted to undergo testing. The seroprevalence of this group that received multiple transfusions was, at minimum, 8.5 patients in 1000. Six previously unsuspected HIV-seropositive cases were diagnosed. CONCLUSIONS Although we had assumed that most patients receiving transfusions would be aware of their risk for HIV infection, our results indicate that, even a decade after the transfusion, many recipients were not aware of the risk and wanted to undergo testing. Abstract
We report here the molecular cloning of the M(r) = 8,000 and 11,000 dynein light chains (DLCs) from the outer arm of Chlamydomonas flagella. These two molecules, which are associated with the intermediate chains at the base of the soluble dynein particle, have predicted masses of 10.3 and 13.8 kDa, respectively, and are 40% identical. Southern blot analysis indicates that one gene exists for each DLC in the Chlamydomonas genome and only a single message was observed for each on Northern blots. Secondary structure predictions suggest that both molecules contain a highly amphiphilic alpha helix that is presumably involved in protein-protein interactions. Several DLC homologues were identified in the GenBank databases. One, predicted from the genomic sequence of Caenorhabditis elegans, is 88.8% identical with the M(r) = 8,000 Chlamydomonas DLC. A second, from rice callus cDNA, is 47% identical with the same DLC. As neither nematodes nor higher plants have motile cilia or flagella at any stage of their life cycles, these DLC homologues presumably must function within the cytoplasm where they may represent previously unrecognized components of cytoplasmic dynein.

Abstract
We have isolated and sequenced a full-length cDNA clone encoding the 78,000 Mr intermediate chain (IC78) of the Chlamydomonas outer arm dynein. This protein previously was shown to be located at the base of the solubilized dynein particle and to interact with alpha tubulin in situ, suggesting that it may be involved in binding the outer arm to the doublet microtubule. The sequence predicts a polypeptide of 683 amino acids having a mass of 76.5 kD. Sequence comparison indicates that IC78 is homologous to the 69,000 M(r) intermediate chain (IC69) of Chlamydomonas outer arm dynein and to the 74,000 M(r) intermediate chain (IC74) of cytoplasmic dynein. The similarity between the chains is greatest in their COOH-terminal halves; the NH(2)-terminal halves are highly divergent. The COOH-terminal half of IC78 contains six short imperfect repeats, termed WD repeats, that are thought to be involved in protein-protein interactions. Although not previously reported, these repeated elements also are present in IC69 and IC74. Using the IC78 cDNA as a probe, we screened a group of slow-swimming insertional mutants and identified one which has a large insertion in the IC78 gene and seven in which the IC78 gene is completely deleted. Electron microscopy of three of these IC78 mutants revealed that each is missing the outer arm, indicating that IC78 is essential for arm assembly or attachment to the outer doublet. Restriction fragment length polymorphism mapping places the IC78 gene on the left arm of chromosome XII/XIII, at or near the mutation oda9, which also causes loss of the outer arm. Mutants with defects in the IC78 gene do not complement the oda9 mutation in stable diploids, strongly suggesting that ODA9 is the structural gene for IC78.
