Abstract
BACKGROUND Myofibroblasts in the cancer microenvironment have recently been implicated in tumour growth and metastasis of gastric cancer. However, the mechanisms responsible for the regulation of myofibroblasts in cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) remain unclear. This study was performed to clarify the mechanisms for regulation of myofibroblasts in gastric cancer microenvironment. METHODS Two CAFs (CaF-29 and CaF-33) from the tumoural gastric wall and a normal fibroblast (NF-29) from the nontumoural gastric wall, 4 human gastric cancer cell lines from scirrhous gastric cancer (OCUM-2MD3 and OCUM-12), and non-scirrhous gastric cancer (MKN-45 and MKN-74) were used. Immunofluorescence microscopy by triple-immunofluorescence labelling (α-SMA, vimentin, and DAPI) was performed to determine the presence of α-SMA-positive myofibroblasts. Real-time RT-PCR was performed to examine α-SMA mRNA expression. RESULTS Immunofluorescence microscopy showed that the frequency of myofibroblasts in CaF-29 was greater than that in NF-29. The number of myofibroblasts in gastric fibroblasts gradually decreased with serial passages. Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) significantly increased the α-SMA expression level of CAFs. Conditioned medium from OCUM-2MD3 or OCUM-12 cells upregulated the α-SMA expression level of CAFs, but that from MKN-45 or MKN-74 cells did not. The α-SMA upregulation effect of conditioned medium from OCUM-2MD3 or OCUM-12 cells was significantly decreased by an anti-TGF-β antibody or Smad2 siRNA. CONCLUSION Transforming growth factor-β from scirrhous gastric carcinoma cells upregulates the number of myofibroblasts in CAFs.

Abstract
Local information on the coupling mechanism between the photonic crystal nanocavity and the feeding waveguide is crucial to enable further improvements of the performance of these systems. Although several investigations on such a coupling have already been performed, information on the local dynamic properties remains hidden. Here, we present a reciprocal space investigation of the dynamics of light side-coupled to a photonic crystal nanocavity. We find that the coupling is promoted by Bloch harmonics having greater transverse momentum.

Abstract
We study the magnetic coupling between a metal-coated near-field probe and a photonic crystal nanocavity. The resonance of the nanocavity shifts to shorter wavelengths when the ringlike apex of the probe is above an antinode of the magnetic field of the cavity. We show that this can be attributed to a magnetic light-matter interaction and is in fact a manifestation of Lenz's law at optical frequencies. We use these measurements to determine the magnetic polarizability of the apex of the probe and find good agreement with theory. We discuss how this method could be applied to study the electric and magnetic polarizibilities of nano-objects.

Abstract
We propose to use a combination of intersubband transitions in semiconductor quantum wells with a two dimensional photonic crystal cavity to obtain narrow, strong thermal radiation spectra. Single peak thermal radiation is obtained due to the Lorentzian shape absorption spectrum of the intersubband transition and the single mode cavity embedded within the photonic band gap. We present an analysis based on the quantum Langevin theory. It is shown that local radiance of the narrow emission peak can be maximized to approximately 80% of the radiation from the blackbody devices when the photon dissipation rates of the cavity mode due to the intersubband absorption and that due to the radiation to the free space modes are equal. Guidelines for concrete device design are introduced, and an example device structure is shown.

Abstract
Helminth egg contamination of vegetables purchased at suburban market in Hanoi, Vietnam was examined. A total of 317 vegetables were examined and 82 (26%) were revealed to be positive for parasite eggs. Of the 15 varieties, 13 were positive except for horseradish and cucumber. Contamination was highest in leafy vegetables (31%), followed by root vegetables (17%) and fruit vegetables (3%). Throughout the survey, five species of parasite eggs were found: Ascaris sp., Trichuris sp., Toxocara sp., Taenia sp. and Ascaridia galli. In the interview with the villagers, 121 (81%) of 149 adult villagers stated that they usually use not only animal feces but also human feces as a fertilizer. Throughout the survey, a total of 453 eggs were recovered. Number of eggs recovered from vegetables was higher in the dry season (355 eggs) than in the rainy season (98 eggs). The study revealed that vegetables purchased at a market in suburban Hanoi (Vietnam) were highly contaminated with parasite eggs excreted by humans and animals. Considering the eating habits of the Vietnamese and the 17% embryonation rate of detected parasites, vegetables seem to play an important role in soil-transmitted helminth infection in this country.

Abstract
A comprehensive investigation of the optical properties of InAs/InP(001) quantum wires (QWrs) and their parent quantum well system formed by the deposition of 4 ML (monolayers) of InAs on InP is carried out by means of temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Unusual two-branch switching of the excitonic PL band maxima is revealed in the temperature dependence for both wires and wells. This is interpreted in terms of the thermal activation of excitonic ground states of the confined nanostructures. Strong modification of the absorbance line shape leading to the appearance of flat spectral regions in the room temperature spectrum of a QWr sample is interpreted in terms of thermally induced change of the dimensionality: from 1D to anisotropic 2D. This change of dimensionality is detected also in the polarized absorbance measurements through the disappearance or significant reduction of the polarization anisotropy in the regions of the hh1-e1 (hh: heavy hole; e: electron) and lh1-e1 (lh: light hole) transitions in QWrs.

Abstract
This study investigates the efficacy of a new Fricke dosimeter formulation consisting of a standard Fricke gel dosimeter gelled with glucomannan (FrGDG). FrGDG was irradiated using a (192)Ir gamma-ray source with a remote afterloading system based on computed tomography images. (60)Co irradiation was performed for measuring the absorption of FrGDG and water. The distribution maps of T2 values from the irradiated containers were obtained by MR imaging and converted to the absorbed dose to visualize the dose distribution. We found that FrGDG was produced easily and quickly at room temperature. R2 (1/T2) values were reproducible and linearly correlated with the absorbed doses in the range from 0 to 30 Gy for irradiation with (192)Ir (the correlation coefficient was 0.99). The mean deviation between the doses obtained from the MR images of the FrGDG and those calculated by the treatment planning system for doses of 37.5, 40, 50, 62.5 and 75 Gy was 4.9%, 4.8%, 3.5%, 2.3% and 2.4%, respectively. In conclusion, MR imaging of FrGDG can visualize the dose distribution successfully, and thus serves as a useful quality assurance tool for complicated three-dimensional radiotherapy treatments.

Abstract
The Los Angeles classification system is the most widely employed criteria associated with the greatest interobserver agreement among endoscopists. In Japan, the Los Angeles classification system has been modified (modified LA system) to include minimal changes as a distinct grade of reflux esophagitis, rather than as auxiliary findings. This adds a further grading M defined as minimal changes to the mucosa, such as erythema and/or whitish turbidity. The modified LA system has come to be used widely in Japan. However, there have been few reports to date that have evaluated the interobserver agreement in diagnosis when using the modified LA classification system incorporating these minimal changes as an additional grade. A total of 100 endoscopists from university hospitals and community hospitals, as well as private practices in the Osaka-Kobe area participated in the study. A total of 30 video clips of 30-40 seconds duration, mostly showing the esophagocardiac junction, were created and shown to 100 endoscopists using a video projector. The participating endoscopists completed a questionnaire regarding their clinical experience and rated the reflux esophagitis as shown in the video clips using the modified LA classification system. Agreement was assessed employing kappa (kappa) statistics for multiple raters. The kappa-value for all 91 endoscopists was 0.094, with a standard error of 0.002, indicating poor interobserver agreement. The endoscopists showed the best agreement on diagnosing grade A esophagitis (0.167), and the poorest agreement when diagnosing grade M esophagitis (0.033). The kappa-values for the diagnoses of grades N, M, and A esophagitis on identical video pairs were 0.275-0.315, with a standard error of 0.083-0.091, indicating fair intraobserver reproducibility among the endoscopists. The study results consistently indicate poor agreement regarding diagnoses as well as fair reproducibility of these diagnoses by endoscopists using the modified LA classification system, regardless of age, type of practice, past endoscopic experience, or current workload. However, grade M reflux esophagitis may not necessarily be irrelevant, as it may suggest an early form of reflux disease or an entirely new form of reflux esophagitis. Further research is required to elucidate the pathophysiological basis of minimal change esophagitis.

Abstract
In our previous report, we demonstrated that the matrix 1 (M1) protein of influenza virus directly binds to heat shock cognate protein 70 (Hsc70). The down-regulation of Hsc70 resulted in the reduction of influenza virus production, thus suggesting that Hsc70 plays a crucial role for viral replication. However, the detailed role of Hsc70 in viral replication remains to be elucidated. Hsc70 has been suggested to play a significant role in both the nuclear import and export processes. In this report, using leptomycin B (LMB), a CRM1-mediated nuclear export inhibitor, we demonstrated that Hsc70 forms a complex with vRNP through M1 in infected cells and in the virion, thus playing a significant role in the export of vRNP from the nucleus but not in the import of vRNP into the nucleus. The regulation of Hsc70 may therefore lead to the development of new anti-influenza virus drugs without raising mutant viruses.

Abstract
Cell nuclear import and export of proteins are among the most important processes for cellular homeostasis. Viruses, including influenza virus and HIV-1 also utilize nuclear export machinery for their propagation. Therefore, the specific inhibition of nuclear export can be a good target for the development of antiviral drugs. This report documents the establishment of Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells stably expressing GFP-NES fusion protein for the sensitive screening of novel nuclear export inhibitors. Leptomycin B (LMB), an inhibitor for the interaction between substrate nuclear export signal (NES) and cellular export factor, CRM1, was used for evaluating the screening system. The low concentration (30 pg/mL) and short time treatment (~10 min) of LMB resulted in the nuclear accumulation of GFP fluorescence.

Abstract
Nitrogen fixation by gut microorganisms is one of the crucial aspects of symbiosis in wood-feeding termites since these termites thrive on a nitrogen-poor diet. In order to understand the evolution of this symbiosis, we analysed the nitrogenase structural gene nifH in the gut microbial communities. In conjunction with the published sequences, we compared approximately 320 putatively functional NifH protein sequences obtained from a total of 19 termite samples that represent all the major branches of their currently proposed phylogeny, and from one species of the cockroach Cryptocercus that shares a common ancestor with termites. Using multivariate techniques for clustering and ordination, a phylogeny of NifH protein sequences was created and plotted variously with host termite families, genera, and species. Close concordance was observed between NifH communities and the host termites at genus level, but family level relationships were not always congruent with accepted termite clade structure. Host groups examined included basal families (Mastotermitidae, Termopsidae, Kalotermitidae, as well as Cryptocercus), the most derived lower termite family Rhinotermitidae, and subfamilies representing the advanced and highly diverse apical family Termitidae (Macrotermitinae, Termitinae, and Nasutitermitinae). This selection encompassed the major nesting and feeding styles recognized in termites, and it was evident that NifH phylogenetic divergence, as well as the occurrence of alternative nitrogenase-type NifH, was to some extent dependent on host lifestyle as well as phylogenetic position.
