Abstract
OBJECTIVE To provide pilot data on the safety and efficacy of anterior and posterior sub-Tenon injections of triamcinolone either alone or in combination with focal photocoagulation in the treatment of mild diabetic macular edema (DME). DESIGN Prospective, phase II, multicenter, randomized clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS One hundred nine patients (129 eyes) with mild DME and visual acuity 20/40 or better. METHODS The participants were assigned randomly to receive either focal photocoagulation (n = 38), a 20-mg anterior sub-Tenon injection of triamcinolone (n = 23), a 20-mg anterior sub-Tenon injection followed by focal photocoagulation after 4 weeks (n = 25), a 40-mg posterior sub-Tenon injection of triamcinolone (n = 21), or a 40-mg posterior sub-Tenon injection followed by focal photocoagulation after 4 weeks (n = 22). Follow-up visits were performed at 4, 8, 17, and 34 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Change in visual acuity and retinal thickness measured with optical coherence tomography (OCT). RESULTS At baseline, mean visual acuity in the study eyes was 20/25 and mean OCT central subfield thickness was 328 mum. Changes in retinal thickening and in visual acuity were not significantly different among the 5 groups at 34 weeks (P = 0.46 and P = 0.94, respectively). There was a suggestion of a greater proportion of eyes having a central subfield thickness less than 250 mum at 17 weeks when the peribulbar triamcinolone was combined with focal photocoagulation. Elevated intraocular pressure and ptosis were adverse effects attributable to the injections. CONCLUSIONS In cases of DME with good visual acuity, peribulbar triamcinolone, with or without focal photocoagulation, is unlikely to be of substantial benefit. Based on these results, a phase III trial to evaluate the benefit of these treatments for mild DME is not warranted.

Abstract
Comparison of the clinical and laboratory characteristics of infants and children with urinary tract infection caused by E. coli (n = 107) or other pathogens (n = 32) yielded a significantly higher association of non-E. coli disease with urinary tract anomalies, younger age, and previous antibiotic treatment. Underlying urinary tract anomalies were noted in 18 patients, of whom 14 (77%) were infected by non-E. coli pathogens. The most frequent anomaly was grade 3-4 vesicoureteral reflux (50%), followed by hydronephrosis (22.7%), ureteropelvic junction obstruction (9%), hypospadias (4.5%), pinpoint meatus (4.5%), and dysplastic kidney (4.5%).

Abstract
13021 Background: HER-2, a member of ErbB family of receptor tyrosine kinases, is an important regulator of cell proliferation and survival, and is a clinically validated target of therapeutic intervention in HER-2 positive metastatic breast cancer patients. In HER-2 overexpressing cells, the extracellular domain (ECD) is frequently cleaved, rendering the remaining transmembrane portion of HER-2 (p95) constitutively active. The presence of both serum ECD and cellular p95 protein have been linked to poor clinical outcome as well as reduced effectiveness of some therapeutic treatments, suggesting that signaling via p95 is clinically relevant and may represent an attractive target for therapeutic intervention. Methods: Through medicinal chemistry efforts, we have identified a series of potent, selective small molecule inhibitors of ADAM metalloproteases, exemplified here by INCB7839. These compounds were tested both in vitro and in vivo for inhibition of HER-2 ECD cleavage and anti-tumor activity in the HER-2 overexpressing BT-474 cell line. Inhibition of circulating HER-2 ECD levels was monitored in a phase I multiple dose escalation study in healthy volunteers. Results: We demonstrate that these inhibitors effectively blocked HER-2 cleavage in HER-2 overexpressing human breast cancer cell lines. When used in combination, INCB7839 dramatically enhanced the antiproliferative activity of suboptimal doses of the anti-HER-2 antibody, trastuzumab, in HER-2 overexpressing/shedding breast cancer cell lines, accompanied by reduced ERK and AKT phosphorylation. Consistent with these in vitro data, INCB7839 reduced serum ECD levels in tumor-bearing mice and enhanced the antitumor effect of trastuzumab in a xenograft tumor model derived from the HER-2 overexpressing BT-474 breast cancer cell line. In a phase I clinical trial, INCB7839 demonstrated a dose-dependent decrease in the circulating levels of HER-2 ECD present in healthy volunteers. Conclusions: Collectively, these findings suggest that blocking HER-2 cleavage with selective ADAM inhibitors, especially in combination with anti-HER-2 antibody therapy, may represent a novel approach for treating HER-2 overexpressing breast cancer patients. Abstract
Salmonella isolates were recovered from a monthly sampling of chicken breasts, ground turkey, ground beef, and pork chops purchased from selected grocery stores in six participating FoodNet sites (Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon, and Tennessee) in 2002 and an additional two sites in 2003 (California and New York). In 2002 and 2003, a total of 6,046 retail meats were examined, including 1,513 chicken breasts, 1,499 ground turkey samples, 1,522 ground beef samples, and 1,502 pork chops. Retail meat samples tested increased to 3,533 in 2003 as compared to 2,513 in 2002. Overall, six percent of 6,046 retail meat samples (n = 365) were contaminated with Salmonella, the bulk recovered from either ground turkey (52%) or chicken breast (39%). Salmonella isolates were serotyped and susceptibility tested using a panel of 16 antimicrobial agents. S. Heidelberg was the predominant serotype identified (23%), followed by S. Saintpaul (12%), S. Typhimurium (11%), and S. Kentucky (10%). Overall, resistance was most often observed to tetracycline (40%), streptomycin (37%), ampicillin (26%), and sulfamethoxazole (25%). Twelve percent of isolates were resistant to cefoxitin and ceftiofur, though only one isolate was resistant to ceftriaxone. All isolates were susceptible to amikacin and ciprofloxacin; however, 3% of isolates were resistant to nalidixic acid and were almost exclusive to ground turkey samples (n = 11/12). All Salmonella isolates were analyzed for genetic relatedness using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns generated by digestion with Xba1 or Xba1 plus Bln1. PFGE fingerprinting profiles showed that Salmonella, in general, were genetically diverse with a total of 175 Xba1 PFGE profiles generated from the 365 isolates. PFGE profiles showed good correlation with serotypes and in some instances, antimicrobial resistance profiles. Results demonstrated a varied spectrum of antimicrobial resistance and PFGE patterns, including several multidrug resistant clonal groups among Salmonella isolates, and signify the importance of sustained surveillance of foodborne pathogens in retail meats.

Abstract
Two-hundred eight Salmonella isolates recovered from over 5,000 imported foods entering the United States in 2001 were tested for antimicrobial susceptibilities and further characterized for quinolone resistance mechanisms, integron carriage, and genetic relatedness. Salmonella Weltevreden (20%), Salmonella Newport (6%), Salmonella Lexington (5%), and Salmonella Thompson (4%) were the four most common serotypes recovered. Twenty-three (11%) isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, and seven (3.4%) to three or more antimicrobials. Resistance was most often observed to tetracycline (9%), followed by sulfamethoxazole (5%), streptomycin (4%), nalidixic acid (3%), and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (2%). One Salmonella Schwarzengrund isolate recovered from squid imported from Taiwan exhibited resistance to eight antimicrobials, including ampicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, kanamycin, nalidixic acid, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Six isolates (Salmonella Bareilly, Salmonella Derby, Salmonella Ohio and three Salmonella Schwarzengrund) contained class 1 integrons, which carried several resistance genes including dhfrI/dhfrXII, aadA, pse-1, and sat1, conferring resistance to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, streptomycin, ampicillin, and streptothricin, respectively. Five of six nalidixic acid-resistant isolates possessed DNA point mutations at either Ser83 or Asp87 in DNA gyrase. One ciprofloxacin-resistant isolate possessed double mutations in DNA gyrase at positions Ser83 and Asp87 as well as a single mutation at Ser80 in parC. The top three serotypes identified, Salmonella Weltevreden (n = 41), Salmonella Newport (n = 13), and Salmonella Lexington (n = 11), were further characterized for genetic relatedness by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Fifty-five distinct pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns were observed among the 65 isolates, indicating extensive genetic diversity among these Salmonella serotypes contaminating imported foods.

Abstract
Recent advances in molecular genetics have identified several genes associated with inherited susceptibility to cancer and have provided a means to begin identifying individuals and families with an increased risk of cancer. This rapid expansion of knowledge about cancer genetics has implications for all aspects of cancer management, including prevention, screening, and treatment. These guidelines specifically address hereditary breast/ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC), Li-Fraumeni syndrome, and Cowden syndrome. These guidelines were developed understanding that much of our knowledge of how the rapidly emerging field of molecular genetics can be applied clinically is preliminary and that flexibility is needed when applying these guidelines to individual families.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION According to the estimates of the World Bank and the World Health Organization bipolar disorder is the sixth leading cause of handicap throughout the world. The burden of this disease is similar to the one of schizophrenia. But cost-of-illness studies are too seldom. Although preventive treatments of bipolar disorder are available for more than fifty years, their economic impact has rarely been studied. LITERATURE FINDINGS This review shows that the yearly cost of bipolar disorder is between 10,000 and 16,000 euro (12,000 and 18,000 US dollars). Eighty percent are indirect costs, 15% are linked to hospitalization and 5% to drugs. Hospitalization costs are lower in Health Maintenance Organization or general population studies than in studies performed on populations receiving care from psychiatric institutions or with a low socio-economic status. DISCUSSION The use of mood stabilizers has a substantial impact on direct costs which are halved and consequently on indirect costs. But different surveys all agree on the dramatic under-use of mood stabilizers which may be adequately prescribed to only a quarter of bipolar patients. CONCLUSION Therefore, the optimization of mental health system resources should prompt incentives to better screen, diagnose, and treat patients with a bipolar disorder.

Abstract
AIMS To determine the genetic relatedness of Campylobacter spp. from retail meat products, and compare the discriminatory power of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and automatic ribotyping. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 378 Campylobacter isolates recovered from 159 raw meats (130 chicken, 25 turkey, three pork and one beef) sampled from 50 retail grocery stores of four supermarket chains in the Maryland suburban area from August 1999 to July 2000 were analysed by PFGE with SmaI, 120 isolates of which were also characterized by ribotyping with PstI using RiboPrinter system. A total of 148 unique PFGE patterns were identified, 91 of which were present in multiple Campylobacter isolates and 24 in multiple meat samples. Nineteen Campylobacter clones with identical PFGE patterns recurred frequently (up to nine times) throughout the sampling period. Comparing ribotyping with PFGE, we identified 44 PFGE patterns and 22 RiboGroups among the 120 isolates tested. Multiple PFGE patterns within one RiboGroup were commonly observed, as well as multiple RiboGroups within one PFGE pattern. CONCLUSIONS Although Campylobacter present in retail meats were genetically diverse, certain clones persisted in poultry meats. PFGE had a greater discriminatory power than ribotyping, and the two methods were complementary in genotyping Campylobacter. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Genomic DNA fingerprinting of Campylobacter confirmed diverse and recurrent Campylobacter clones in the retail meats, which provides additional data for a better understanding of the epidemiological aspect of Campylobacter infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIM Capsule endoscopy is a new tool in the evaluation of the small intestine. To speed evaluation and acceptance of this technology, the manufacturer (Given Imaging Ltd, Yoqneam, Israel) funded several trials. The data from these trials were collected at a central repository using a standardized reporting tool. Presentation of this data to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2003 led to the removal of the adjunctive term with regard to indication for capsule endoscopy, recognizing that the method is of independent importance for evaluating the small bowel. The aim of the present study was to combine the data from several capsule trials to help determine the yield and miss rate of capsule endoscopy for different diseases, compared with alternative diagnostic modalities. METHODS Capsule studies were identified from a master database of funded studies. Studies were included in the pooled analysis if they reported a prospective comparison with another modality for evaluation of the small intestine. RESULTS 32 studies with a total of 691 patients were found in the master database, of which 24 studies, representing 530 patients, met inclusion criteria and were entered into the pooled analysis. Prior to study entry, patients had undergone a mean of 6.77 diagnostic procedures, without findings. Of these 24 studies, 14 (involving 310 patients) were categorized as "bleeding" studies, and 10 studies (220 patients) as "nonbleeding small-bowel disorders" studies. The comparison procedure was push enteroscopy in 300 patients (in 45 for nonbleeding disorders), small-bowel series in 140 patients (in 125 for non-bleeding disorders), and colonoscopy with ileoscopy in 90 patients (50 for nonbleeding disorders). Overall analysis per patient showed new findings from capsule endoscopy in 50 % of patients; 17 % had new findings from the comparison method; in 22 % there were similar findings; and in 11 % there were no findings. A total of 1349 instances of disease were identified in the 530 examinations. Capsule endoscopy solely detected 87 % of the disease instances, while the comparison method solely detected 13 %. The yield for push enteroscopy alone was 14.8 %, for small-bowel series it was 9.9 %, and for colonoscopy it was 13.2 %. Capsule endoscopy missed 146 disease instances for a miss rate of 10 %; 989 were missed by the comparison methods for a miss rate of 73 %; and 214 were detected by both methods. CONCLUSION Capsule endoscopy is the state of the art method for noninvasive detection of small-bowel disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Assuming that psychomotor disturbances represent the core and are specific of melancholia, Parker et al. have developed the CORE, an 18-item scale assessing retardation, agitation and non-interactivity by behavioural observation which is able to distinguish melancholia from other depressive disorders. We report an inter-rater reliability study of the French version of the CORE. METHODS 35 French-speaking in-patients, with ICD-10 criteria for major depression underwent a video-recorded interview aimed to rate the CORE. Each patient's recording was rated by 5 psychiatrists. We tested the inter-rater reliability of the total CORE score and of each of its three subscales' scores using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). A cut-off score for melancholia was established against the opinion of the psychiatrist in charge of the patient using a ROC curve. We used Cohen's kappa to assess the agreement between raters as to rate patients above the cut-off, namely the allocation of melancholia. RESULTS The global ICC for the total score was 0.88 and ranged from 0.97 to 0.75 for the varying rater dyads. A ROC curve yielded an optimal cut-off of 5 for melancholia. The global kappa for the agreement on melancholia allocation was good (0.65). LIMITATIONS The five raters had not exactly the same condition of quotation. The agreement for the "agitation" subscale was poor. CONCLUSION The French version of the CORE, has a good to excellent inter-rater reliability for the total score as for the allocation of melancholia according to a cut-off. Further validation studies are required to allow research application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Capsule endoscopy (CE) is an effective means of investigating the small bowel in patients with gastrointestinal diseases. Computerized reports are frequently used in endoscopy, and the Minimal Standard Terminology (MST) has been promoted by endoscopy societies as the official vocabulary for endoscopy. The aims of this study were to design a lexicon for CE reports based on the principles of the MST and to validate lists of terms for describing findings and reasons for performing a CE by cross-matching them with the results of CE procedures collected during ongoing clinical studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS A consensus-based Capsule Endoscopy Structured Terminology (CEST) was developed by experts involved in CE studies. Lists of terms suitable for CE were designed for the various sections of an endoscopic report. They were then correlated with the corresponding MST lists for duodenal and intestinal endoscopy. The results of 766 CE procedures, collected in an electronic case record form (eCRF), were analyzed to provide lists of reasons for performing the procedures and of the findings. The eCRF provided only a limited number of items for each data field, along with free-text facilities. Only descriptions pertaining to the small bowel were analyzed. Lists of terms were then reviewed by two experts to group obvious synonyms. The accuracy of the CEST was defined beforehand as the capability to describe 90 % of entries. RESULTS A total of 766 CE procedures were analyzed. The eCRF included 824 entries as reasons for the examination in 655 CEs (1.3 per procedure). These represented 122 different expressions. After grouping of synonyms, 28 expressions remained. Among them, 10 were matched with terms from the list of reasons for performing CE offered in the CEST. These were the most frequently used, accounting for 768 entries in this field (93.2 %). All eCRFs contained at least one description of findings. A total of 109 CE procedures were classified as normal (14.3 %). A total of 2624 entries for abnormal findings were recorded for 657 procedures (4.0 per procedure). In all, 213 different expressions were used to describe abnormal findings. After grouping of synonyms, 52 expressions remained. Among these, 27 were matched with terms from the list of findings in the CEST, covering 2403 entries (91.6 %). CONCLUSIONS In this study, CEST terms were capable of describing more than 90 % of the reasons for performance and of the findings in an unselected set of CE procedures. CEST is therefore suitable for use as the standard lexicon for CE reports. Adopted as a standard, it could significantly improve the quality of the data collected and reported in CE studies.

Allopurinol safely and effectively optimizes tioguanine metabolites in inflammatory bowel disease patients not responding to azathioprine and mercaptopurine. Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2005; 22:441-6. Abstract
BACKGROUND Many non-responders to azathioprine or mercaptopurine (6-mercaptopurine) have high normal thiopurine methyltransferase activity and preferentially metabolize mercaptopurine to produce 6-methylmercaptopurine instead of the active 6-tioguanine (6-tioguanine) metabolites. AIM To describe the use of allopurinol in mercaptopurine/azathioprine non-responders to deliberately shunt metabolism of mercaptopurine towards 6-tioguanine. METHODS Fifteen thiopurine non-responders whose metabolites demonstrated preferential metabolism towards 6-methylmercaptopurine are described. Subjects were commenced on allopurinol 100 mg po daily and mercaptopurine/azathioprine was reduced to 25-50% of the original dose. Patients were followed clinically and with serial 6-tioguanine and 6-methylmercaptopurine metabolite measurements. RESULTS After initiating allopurinol, 6-tioguanine levels increased from a mean of 185.73 +/- 17.7 to 385.4 +/- 41.5 pmol/8 x 10(8) red blood cells (P < 0.001), while 6-methylmercaptopurine decreased from a mean of 10 380 +/- 1245 to 1732 +/- 502 pmol/8 x 10(8) RBCs (P < 0.001). Allopurinol led to a decrease in white blood cell from a mean of 8.28 +/- 0.95 to 6.1 +/- 0.82 x 10(8)/L (P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The addition of allopurinol to thiopurine non-responders with preferential shunting to 6-methylmercaptopurine metabolites appears to be an effective means to shift metabolism towards 6-tioguanine.

CASE HISTORY An increase in the bulk somatic cell count (BSCC) of up to 1,000 x 103 cells/ml occurred in a dairy herd in Israel at the end of 2001 and beginning of 2002. CLINICAL FINDINGS Bacteriological examination of milk from 69 cows revealed a high prevalence of Streptococcus group G bacteria, identified as S. canis, affecting 38% of cows and 20% of all quarters. Isolates were sensitive to cephalothin and moderately sensitive to penicillin G. Infected cows were separated from the herd, treated with intramammary antibiotics, milked last, and strict hygiene practices were introduced to the milking routine. The pathogen was cleared from the herd and BSCC decreased to 250-350 x 103 cells/ml after 6 months. DIAGNOSIS Streptococcus canis mastitis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Streptococcus canis infection may cause subclinical mastitis and high bulk SCC in dairy herds and be resolved by treatment with intramammary antibiotics and the introduction of strict hygiene practices.

Abstract
Thirty male adult Wistar rats (300-/+10 g body weight) underwent either 5/6 nephrectomy (Nx, n=20) or sham operation (SHAM, n=10) to determine olpadronate effects in an experimental model of uremic bone disease. For a 38-day period, 10 rats received olpadronate (16microg/100g bw) once a week (Nx+OPD) and the other vehicle (Nx). SHAM received vehicle. At baseline, treatment onset (t=7 days) and end of study (t=45 days) calcium, phosphorus, creatinine, bone alkaline phosphatase (b-ALP) and deoxypyridinoline crosslinks (DPyr) were determined. At t=0 and t=45 bone mineral density (BMD) was measured by DXA. At t=45 the right tibia was removed for bone histology. There were no differences in serum calcium. Phosphorus increased in Nx and Nx+OPD compared to SHAM (p<lt 0.05). The b-ALP increased from t=0 to t=7 in Nx and Nx+OPD (p<0.05) and decreased thereafter to SHAM levels. DPyr/creat increased in Nx compared to SHAM (p<0.05) and Nx+OPD (p<0.001). Nx+OPD presented lower DPyr excretion than SHAM rats (p<0.01). At t=45, tibia BMD of Nx was 20% and 26% lower than in SHAM (p<0.005) and Nx+OPD, respectively, (p<0.001). BMD was higher Nx+OPD than in SHAM (p<0.05). OPD prevented the loss of bone volume, the increment in osteoid volume and erosion surface observed in Nx group (p<0.05). OPD also prevent the increment in the number of osteoclasts (OC) and the active OC surface and decreases the number of TRAP(+)-OC (p<0.05). In summary, OLP may be beneficial in osteopenia associated to high turnover bone disease of CRF. However, the use of bisphosphonate therapy for renal insufficiency must be further investigated in order to clarify essential aspects of treatment as the patient selection and several aspects of treatment, such as optimum dose, frequency, and safe period of administration.

Abstract
Salmonella Typhimurium remains one of the most common causes of salmonellosis in animals and humans in the United States. The emergence of multi-drug resistant Salmonella reduces the therapeutic options in cases of invasive infections, and has been shown to be associated with an increased burden of illness. In this study, 588 S. Typhimurium (including var. Copenhagen) isolates obtained from either animal diagnostic specimens (n = 199) or food animals after slaughter/processing (n = 389) were examined for antimicrobial susceptibility, presence of class-1 integrons, and characterized using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and phage typing. Seventy-six percent (448/588) of isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial. Salmonella isolates displayed resistance most often to streptomycin (63%), tetracycline (61%), ampicillin (61%), and to a lesser extent, chloramphenicol (36%), ceftiofur (15%), gentamicin (9%), and nalidixic acid (4%), with more resistance observed among diagnostic isolates. Salmonella recovered from turkeys (n = 38) exhibited the highest rates of resistance, with 92% of isolates resistant to least one antimicrobial, and 58% resistant to > or =10 antimicrobials. Class 1 integrons were present in 51% of all isolates. Five integron associated resistance genes (aadA, aadB, pse-1, oxa-2 and dhfr) were identified. A total of 311 PFGE patterns were generated using XbaI, indicating a genetically diverse population. The largest PFGE cluster contained 146 isolates, including DT104 isolates obtained from all seven animal species. Results demonstrated a varied spectrum of antimicrobial resistance, including several multidrug resistant clonal groups, among S. Typhimurium and S. Typhimurium var. Copenhagen isolates recovered from both diagnostic and slaughter/processing samples.

Abstract
AIM To determine the incidence, timing and clinical significance of acquired postnatal cytomegalovirus (CMV) in extremely low-birthweight (ELBW) infants. METHODS Prospective, longitudinal surveillance study. ELBW infants were recruited in the first week of life. Maternal blood was tested for CMV-specific IgG antibodies. Weekly urine samples were obtained from infants for CMV culture and rapid antigen testing. Data were collected regarding clinical course and breast milk intake. RESULTS Of 181 eligible infants, 119 infants, born to 101 mothers, were enrolled. Eighty of the 101 mothers had their serum checked for CMV status. Seventy percent of those tested were seropositive for CMV. Of the 65 infants born to seropositive mothers, 94% received breast milk during their hospital stay. Complete urine collection was obtained in 92 infants. CMV was cultured from the urine of only four infants, all of whom were born to seropositive mothers. Only one of these four infants was symptomatic. The range at which CMV was first detected was between 48 and 72 postnatal days of age. CONCLUSIONS Despite a very high CMV seropositivity rate in mothers of ELBW infants, and the previously reported high rate of CMV excretion into breast milk, the incidence of postnatal CMV transmission was extremely low in our study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this paper was to review and summarize the data about the frequency of depression during multiple sclerosis (MS). MATERIAL AND METHODS We performed a metaanalysis to combine the results of the studies which compared the frequency of depression in MS patients with the prevalence in patients with other chronic diseases. Eight controlled studies were identified via manual and computerized search of the Medline and PsychInfo databases. Given the various ways these studies reported their results, we used statistical procedures based on the combination of significance levels (the method of adding Zs and the method of adding ts). An additional statistical procedure, Cohen's d, was performed to estimate the effect of size. RESULTS The two statistical methods yielded highly significant summary statistics: z=4.15 and z=3.98, respectively (p<0.0001). The effect of size (Cohen's d), which ranged from 0.02 to 0.70 with an average of 0.29 (95 percent confidence interval: 0.09-0.49), can be considered as medium and hence clinically meaningful. CONCLUSION These results suggest that the association between MS and depression is specific, that is not just casual nor due to the nonspecific factors inherent in every chronic disease.
