Abstract
Uniform SnO(2) nanorod arrays were deposited on a 4 inch SiO(2)/Si wafer by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PEVCD) at low deposition temperature of around 300 degrees C. The SnO(2) nanorods were connected at the roots, thus the nanorod sensors could be fabricated by a feasible way compatible with microelectronic processes. The surface of the sensors was modified by Pt nanoparticles deposited by dip coating and sputtering, respectively. The sensing properties of the Pt-modified SnO(2) nanorod sensors to CO and H(2) gases were comparatively studied. After surface modification of Pt, the sensing response to CO and H(2) gases increased dramatically. The 2 nm Pt-modified SnO(2) nanorod sensors by sputtering showed the best sensing performance. By increasing Pt thickness from 2 nm up to 20 nm, the optimal working temperature decreased by 30 degrees C while the sensing response also decreased by about 4 times. Comparing these two Pt modification approaches by dip coating and sputtering, both could achieve comparable promotion effect if the Pt thickness can be controlled around its optimal value. The deposition technique of SnO(2) nanorod arrays by PECVD has good potential for scale-up and the fabrication process of nanorod sensors possesses simplicity and good compatibility with contemporary microelectronics-based technology.

Abstract
DairyMod, EcoMod, and the SGS Pasture Model are mechanistic biophysical models developed to explore scenarios in grazing systems. The aim of this manuscript was to test the ability of the models to simulate net herbage accumulation rates of ryegrass-based pastures across a range of environments and pasture management systems in Australia and New Zealand. Measured monthly net herbage accumulation rate and accumulated yield data were collated from ten grazing system experiments at eight sites ranging from cool temperate to subtropical environments. The local climate, soil, pasture species, and management (N fertiliser, irrigation, and grazing or cutting pattern) were described in the model for each site, and net herbage accumulation rates modelled. The model adequately simulated the monthly net herbage accumulation rates across the range of environments, based on the summary statistics and observed patterns of seasonal growth, particularly when the variability in measured herbage accumulation rates was taken into account. Agreement between modelled and observed growth rates was more accurate and precise in temperate than in subtropical environments, and in winter and summer than in autumn and spring. Similarly, agreement between predicted and observed accumulated yields was more accurate than monthly net herbage accumulation. Different temperature parameters were used to describe the growth of perennial ryegrass cultivars and annual ryegrass; these differences were in line with observed growth patterns and breeding objectives. Results are discussed in the context of the difficulties in measuring pasture growth rates and model limitations.

Abstract
Store-operated Ca2+ entry plays an important role in Ca2+ homeostasis in cells but the mechanisms of control of these channels are not completely understood. We describe an investigation of the role of the CD38-cyclic-ADP-ribose (cADPR)-ryanodine-channel (RyR) signaling pathway in store-operated Ca2+ entry in human smooth muscle. We observed that human myometrial cells have a functional store-operated Ca2+ entry mechanism. Furthermore, we observed the presence of transient receptor potential 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 ion channels in human myometrial cells. Store-operated Ca2+ transient was inhibited by at least 50-70% by several inhibitors of the RyR, including ryanodine (10 microM), dantrolene (10 microM), and ruthenium red (10 microM). Furthermore, the cell permeable inhibitor of the cADPR-system, 8-Br-cADPR (100 microM), is a potent inhibitor of the store-operated entry, decreasing the store operated entry by 80%. Pre-incubation of cells with 100 microM cADPR and the hydrolysis-resistant cADPR analog 3-deaza-cADPR (50 microM), but not with ADP-ribose (ADPR) leads to a 1.6-fold increase in the store-operated Ca2+ transient. In addition, we observed that nicotinamide (1-10 mM), an inhibitor of cADPR synthesis, also leads to inhibition of the store-operated Ca2+ transient by 50-80%. Finally, we observed that the transient receptor potential channels, RyR, and CD38 can be co-immunoprecipitated, indicating that they interact in vivo. Our observations clearly implicate the CD38-cADPR-ryanodine signaling pathway in the regulation of store-operated Ca2+ entry in human smooth muscle cells.

Abstract
This study describes the demographic, offence and diagnostic characteristics of subjects referred by the Procurators Fiscal operating from three courts in Tayside, Scotland. A comparison is made of referrals made between 1988 to 1995 and 1997 to 1998. There was an increased rate of referral on an urgent basis over time, primarily involving patients already in contact with the psychiatric services, 37% of whom were detained and admitted to hospital. This urgent assessment ensured that mentally-disordered offenders were not remanded in custody simply for the preparation of a report, and it allowed an early assessment to be made regarding the suitability for diversion from prosecution. This outcome is compatible with guidelines issued by the Home Office in 1990 (Home Office, 1990).

Abstract
The acceptability of routine psychosocial assessments to women and staff at an antenatal clinic of a public hospital in Sydney, Australia, was investigated. 104 English-speaking women had a telephone interview within a few days of the psychosocial assessment, and 65 of these women also participated in a telephone interview 5-8 weeks after the birth. 14 midwives who had administered the questions were also interviewed. These three sets of interviews indicated that the majority of women and staff considered the psychosocial questions to be appropriate and helpful. Prior to introducing a shorter version of the psychosocial assessment for all women, consultations took place with health professionals and community women from Arabic-speaking (n = 30) and Vietnamese-speaking (n = 39) backgrounds to determine the expected suitability of such questions to women from these ethnic backgrounds. The only consistent concern was that the term 'husband' should replace 'partner' when interviewing Arabic-speaking women. Telephone interviews were then conducted with a sample of Arabic-speaking (n = 48) and Vietnamese-speaking (n = 50) women within a few days after they had been to the clinic. As with the English-speaking women, most considered the questions to be appropriate and acceptable.

Abstract
The State Hospital, Carstairs, is a special secure psychiatric facility for Scotland and Northern Ireland. This study describes the background, illness and offence (where appropriate) characteristics of 25 patients admitted between 1999 and 2003 with a diagnosis of any affective disorder. Patients were, on average, 37 years old and had a lengthy history of psychiatric contact. Patients with an affective disorder were more likely to be admitted under civil proceedings, following a transfer from hospital, as opposed to being admitted under criminal procedure. Sixty per cent were discharged to prison, court or local hospitals within one year of their admission to special secure care. Significant violence during an episode of mania or hypomania (even in the presence of psychotic symptoms) appears rare. Recurrent unipolar depression resistant to first and second line treatments in women, and lithium withdrawal mania in male bipolar patients were the most common clinical problems. Treatments aimed at reducing co-morbid substance misuse, and improving compliance with mood stabilisers, appear important in managing this patient group.

Abstract
Microstructured optical fibers consisting of a low refractive index core surrounded by high index inclusions guide by anti-resonant reflection. Previous experiments considered only wavelengths that are short compared to microstructure dimensions. We experimentally investigate a microstructured fiber with high index inclusions and demonstrate antiresonant guidance at long wavelengths. We also numerically simulate these structures, including coupling loss, propagation loss, and structural disorder, and compare with the experimental results.

Abstract
Routine psychosocial assessment was introduced at an Australian public hospital's antenatal clinic in 2001. After modification, this assessment consists of 12 questions together with the Edinburgh Depression Scale (EDS). Data are reported for responses to these questions from over 2,000 English-speaking women presenting to the clinic in a 12-month period. These 12 questions and the EDS were categorised into seven risk domains, with 12% of the women (n = 260) having three or more of these risk domains. Referral information to one of our two clinical services shows that 6.7% of women assessed in the antenatal clinic become clients having face-face counselling, and a further 7.2% have just telephone contact with this specialist perinatal mental health service. This information should prove useful for services considering implementing routine psychosocial assessments (or "screening") in the antenatal period.
