Abstract
We investigated the features of Dectin-2 expression both at transcriptional and translational levels during Aspergillus fumigatus infection in human lung. Simultaneously, the expression of CD206 was assayed as an activated marker of alveolar macrophages. The characteristic of Dectin-2 expression were then confirmed in Monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) after A. fumigatus stimulation by Flow Cytometry. We found that the expression of Dectin-2 was low in normal lung, while it revealed a markedly up-regulation during A. fumigatus invasion. Dectin-2 expression was predominantly restricted to CD206 positive cells. There was salient positive correlation between Dectin-2 expression and CD206. We conclude that Dectin-2 expression is largely restricted to alveolar macrophages in human lung. The conspicuous expression of Dectin-2 during A. fumigatus invasion suggests its notable contribution to antifungal defenses in pulmonary aspergillosis.

Abstract
Inhibition of angiogenesis can attenuate tumor growth. Hence, mathematical modeling of tumor-induced angiogenesis can be a tool for predicting outcome of angiogenesis inhibitors. We have generated a two-dimensional cornea model of angiogenesis and have tested the effectiveness of the inhibitor through testing representative examples. The effects of thrombospondin and the way it interacts in the cornea with the endothelial cells and tumor angiogenic factors were examined. We were then able to define the inhibitor's role specific to our benchmark model. Finally, a thorough sensitivity analysis was performed to verify baseline values and determine the precise effects of the different parameters. Our findings can be used to design strategies involving manufacturing inhibitors to regulate the angiogenesis process.

Abstract
Object
Multilevel anterior cervical decompression and fusion is indicated for patients with multilevel compression or stenosis of the spinal cord. Some have reported that this procedure would lead to a loss of cervical range of motion (CROM). However, few studies have demonstrated the exact impact of the procedure on CROM. Here, the authors describe short- and midterm postoperative CROM following multilevel anterior cervical decompression and fusion.
Methods
Thirty-five patients underwent a 3- or 4-level anterior cervical decompression and fusion. In all patients, active CROM was measured preoperatively and at both the short-term (3–4 months) and midterm (12–15 months) follow-ups by using a CROM device. The preoperative and postoperative data were analyzed using ANOVA (α = 0.05).
Results
Patients had significantly less ROM in all planes of motion postoperatively. The greater limitation in CROM was observed at the short-term follow-up. However, at the midterm follow-up, an obvious increase in CROM was observed in each cardinal plane compared with that in the short-term (sagittal plane 17.4%, coronal plane 14.1%, and horizontal plane 19.5%). A gradual increase in the CROM in each cardinal plane was observed during the recovery period in 5 patients. In the 6 conventional motions, the major recovery of CROM was observed in flexion (27.5%), while relatively less recovery was seen in extension (10.5%).
Conclusions
Patients had an obvious reduction in active CROM following multilevel anterior cervical decompression and fusion. The greater limitation in CROM was observed at the short-term follow-up. In the midterm follow-up, however, an obvious recovery in CROM was observed in each cardinal plane, reducing the restriction of neck motion further.

Abstract
The aims of the present study were to study the interspecies difference in the pharmacokinetics of luteolin and apigenin occurring in Chrysanthemum morifolium extract (CME) among rats, beagle dogs, mini-pigs, and humans, and compared the human pharmacokinetic parameters with the data predicted from the above three animals. The plasma concentrations of luteolin and apigenin were determined with a RP-HPLC method. An interspecies difference of pharmacokinetics was found, especially between rats and other species, the plasma concentration of luteolin was much lower than that of apigenin in rats, although the content of luteolin in CME was higherthan that of apigenin, whereas the plasma concentration of luteolin was much higher than that of apigenin in dogs, mini-pigs and humans. Animal scale-up of some pharmacokinetic parameters of luteolin and apigenin were also performed after rats, beagle dogs, mini-pigs and humans were orally given CME at dosages of 400 mg/kg, 102 mg/kg, 90 mg/kg, and 20 mg/kg, respectively. Linear relationships were obtained between log mean retention time (MRT) and log species body weight (W) (kg), and log elimination half-life (t1/2) (h) and logW. The corresponding allometric equations were MRT=9.382W(0.1711) (R2 = 0.9999) and t1/2 = 4.811W(0.1093) (R2 = 0.9013) for luteolin, MRT = 12.53W(0.0356) (R2 = 0.9980) and t1/2 = 7.940W(0.0294) (R2 = 0.9258) for apigenin, respectively. The predicted human pharmacokinetic parameters (MRT and t1/2) by an allometric approach were 18.6 h and 7.46 h for luteolin, 14.3 h and 8.95 h for apigenin, respectively, which were close to the values obtained from humans (20 mg CME/kg) in the present study. The study has demonstrated the possibility to extrapolate the pharmacokinetic behavior of flavonoids from animals to humans.

Abstract
miRNAs are a class of endogenous non-coding RNA, which can regulate downstream target genes through binding to the 3'UTR of those genes. Numerous studies have indicated that abnormal expression of miRNAs is implicated in tumor development. Aberrant expression of miR-31 has been found in various cancers, including colorectal cancer. Here, we show that miR-31 is upregulated in human colon cancer tissues and cell lines, and that repression of miR-31 inhibited colon cancer cell proliferation and colony formation in soft agarose. To further elucidate the mechanism underlying the role of miR-31 in promoting colon cancer, we used online miRNA target prediction databases and found that the tumor suppressor RhoTBT1 may be a target of miR-31. Imunohistochemistry assay revealed that RhoBTB1 was significantly decreased in HT29 cells. In addition, ectopic expression of miR-31 reduced RhoBTB1 in the colon cancer cell line HT29. The results suggested that suppression of RhoBTB1 may be responsible for colon tumorigenesis, which was inhibited directly by miR-31. The results of MTT and soft agarose colony-formation assays showed that knockdown of RhoBTB1 by RNAi induced cell proliferation, and colony formation in soft agarose, which mimicked the function of miR-31. This further suggested that suppression of RhoBTB1 was responsible for colon tumorigenesis. In conclusion, we found that miR-31 acts as an oncogene in colon cancer and identified RhoBTB1 as a new target of miR-31 further study demonstrated that miR-31 contributed to the development of colon cancer at least partly by targeting RhoBTB1.

Abstract
Structural and magnetic properties of La0.2Ca0.8MnO3 nanoparticles with average size of 15-37 nm, prepared by the glycine-nitrate method, have been studied. Synchrotron experiments performed in the temperature range of 80-300 K have shown that a structural transition from room temperature orthorhombic Pnma to monoclinic P2(1)/m space group, associated with orbital ordering, occurs below 200 K in the studied particles. This transition observed for the largest particles of 37 nm is very close to that of bulk, as seen by similar temperature variation of lattice parameters and orthorhombic strain. The transition is highly suppressed for smaller 15 nm particles. Horizontal and vertical shifts of magnetic hysteresis loops (M(Shift) and H(EB)), displayed in a field cooled process, indicate size dependent exchange bias effect. It is also shown that M(shift) and H(EB), as well as the remanent magnetization M(r) and coercive field H(c) at low temperatures, exhibit a non-monotonic size dependence for particles around 23 nm. These effects may be attributed to the changes in uncompensated spins at the surface, anisotropy or alternatively to a transition from a multi-domain to the single domain state.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the correlation between Chlamydia pneumonia (Cpn) infection and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS 82 patients with acute exacerbation COPD (AE-COPD) or stabilized COPD patients at outpatient visits, in the People's Hospital of Jiangyin city from Aug. 2010 to May 2012, together with 46 cases having stationary phase COPD and 38 healthy volunteers as control group, were involved in this study. Patients were bled 2 ml, on the next day of hospitalization while patients at emergency room were bled 2 ml immediately, but bled again on the 15(th) day. Serum was separated through cryopreservation and the Cpn antibodies (IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies) were detected, under micro-immunofluorescence. RESULTS In terms of IgG in the three groups, the positive rates did not show significant differences (P > 0.05) but the GMT of the IgG in the AE-COPD group was significantly higher (P < 0.01) than that in the control group. IgA positive rate among the three groups; AE-COPD appeared the highest. There was no significant difference between the AE-COPD group and stationary phase COPD group (P > 0.05), however, there were significant differences between the AE-COPD group, the stationary phase COPD group and the control group (P < 0.01). In terms of GMT of IgA in the three groups, there was significant difference between the AE-COPD group and stationary phase COPD group (P > 0.05), but with significant difference between the AE-COPD group and the control group (P > 0.01). There was significant difference between stationary phase COPD group and the control group (P > 0.05). When comparing both the rates of acute infection and chronic infection on the AE-COPD groups with the control group, there appeared significant differences (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). When comparing the acute and chronic infection between the stationary phase COPD group and the control group, the rate of acute infection did not show significant difference (P > 0.05) while the chronic infection rate appear to have had significant difference (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION Cpn infection seemed to be closely related to the development of COPD.

Abstract
In order to characterize the pharmacokinetics, excretion, and distribution of combretastatin A4 phosphate (CA4P) and its active metabolite, combretastatin A4 (CA4), in rats, a reliable gradient HPLC-based method has been developed and validated. The pharmacokinetic profiles of CA4P and CA4 in rats after CA4P intravenous injection at doses of 0.7, 1 and 4 mg x kg(-1) were best described by a two-compartment model. The terminal half-lives of CA4P or CA4 were similar at different CA4P dose levels, 5-9 min for CA4P and 39-60 min for CA4, while t1/2alpha, and Vd of CA4P or CA4 were very different. CA4 was largely distributed to the heart, intestine, lung, spleen and liver during 15 to 40 min after intravenous injection of CA4P. CA4P was predominantly excreted into urine (10.72%) and feces (9.703%) and to a lesser extent into bile (0.897%), whereas a greater portion of CA4 were excreted into feces (6.235%) and to a lesser extent into urine (0.782%) and bile (0.496%) during 0-28 h after intravenous injection of 1 mg x kg(-1) to rats. This is the first study to characterize the distribution of the active CA4P metabolite, CA4, in rat.

Abstract
Taking cotton cultivars Liaomian 19 and NuCoTN 33B as test materials, a field experiment was conducted to study the effects of nitrogen fertilization rate (0, 240 and 480 kg x hm(-2)) and planting density (75000, 97500 and 120000 plants x hm(-2)) on the boll biomass and nitrogen accumulation in the extremely early maturing cotton region of Northeast China. With the growth and development of cotton, the biomass and nitrogen accumulation of cotton boll, cotton seed, and cotton fiber varied in 'S' shape. Both nitrogen fertilization rate and planting density had significant effects on the dynamic characteristics of boll biomass and nitrogen accumulation, and on the fiber yield and quality. In treatment 240 kg x hm(-2) and 97500 plants x hm(-2), the biomass of single boll, cotton seed and cotton fiber was the maximum, the starting time and ending time of the rapid accumulation period of the biomass and nitrogen were earlier but the duration of the accumulation was shorter, the rapid accumulation speed of the biomass was the maximum, and the distribution indices of the biomass and nitrogen were the lowest in boll shell but the highest in cotton seed and cotton fiber.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) procedures are successful in treating multilevel cervical radiculopathy and cervical myelopathy. It was reported that this procedure would result in a loss of cervical range of motion. However, few studies have focused on the exact impact of multilevel (more than 3 levels) ACDF on cervical range of motion. METHODS 29 patients underwent a 3-level or 4-level ACDF. In all the patients, preoperative active cervical ROM measurement was performed, and postoperative measurement was performed at 1-year follow-up by a CROM device. The pre- and postoperative data were compared to each other using paired t tests (α = 0.05). RESULTS The patients had significantly less ROM after the surgery in all planes of motion. Major reduction was observed in flexion (39.5%), left and right lateral flexion (25.7 and 25.9%), with relatively minor impact on extension (18.3%), left and right rotation (14.0 and 14.4%) observed. In the three cardinal planes, major reduction was observed in the sagittal plane (28.2%) and coronal plane (25.8%), while minor impact observed in the horizontal plane (14.1%). CONCLUSIONS The patients of cervical spondylotic myelopathy had an obvious reduction in active cervical ROM following multilevel ACDF. However, patients might not experience great difficulties in performing daily activities with regard to the loss of neck motion after fusion.

To make clear these questions will help us inherit and carry forward the existing civilization achievements of acu-moxibustion, and unceasingly bring forth new ideas and further improvement in clinical application, so as to serve the people's health in a better way.

Abstract
Taking two cotton cultivars Liaomian 19 and NuCOTN 33B with different growth periods as test materials, a field experiment was conducted to study the effects of different nitrogen fertilization rates (0, 240 and 480 kg N x hm(-2)) and different planting densities (75000, 97500 and 120000 plants x hm(-2)) on the cotton biomass, nitrogen accumulation, and accumulative nitrogen utilization in the planting region of extremely early mature cotton in Northeast China. The dynamics of cotton biomass and nitrogen accumulation of the two cultivars with their growth process followed Logistic model. Both nitrogen fertilization rate and planting density had significant effects on the cotton nitrogen accumulation dynamics and the cotton yield and quality. In all treatments, the beginning time of rapid accumulation of nitrogen was about 13 d earlier than that of biomass. In treatment plant density 97500 plants x hm(-2) and nitrogen fertilization rate 240 kg x hm(-2), the eigenvalues of the dynamic accumulation models of nitrogen and biomass for the two cultivars were most harmonious, lint yield was the highest, fiber quality was the best, and accumulative nitrogen utilization efficiency was the highest. In the study region, the earlier beginning time of rapid accumulation of nitrogen and biomass and their higher accumulation rates were benefit to the formation of higher cotton yield.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to detect cerebral potentials elicited by proximal stimulation of the first sacral (S1) nerve root at the S1 dorsal foramen and to investigate latency and amplitude of the first cerebral potential. Tibial nerve SEP and S1 nerve root SEP were obtained from 20 healthy subjects and 5 patients with unilateral sciatic nerve or tibial nerve injury. Stimulation of the S1 nerve root was performed by a needle electrode via the S1 dorsal foramen. Cerebral potentials were recorded twice to document reproducibility. Latencies and amplitudes of the first cerebral potentials were recorded. Reproducible cerebral evoked potentials were recorded and P20s were identified in 36 of 40 limbs in the healthy subjects. The mean latency of P20 was 19.8 ± 1.6 ms. The mean amplitude of P20-N30 was 1.2 ± 0.9 μV. In the five patients, P40 of tibial nerve SEP was absent, while well-defined cerebral potentials of S1 nerve root SEP were recorded and P20 was identified from the involved side. This method may be useful in detecting S1 nerve root lesion and other disorders affecting the proximal portions of somatosensory pathway. Combined with tibial nerve SEP, it may provide useful information for diagnosis of lesions affecting the peripheral nerve versus the central portion of somatosensory pathway.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of baicalin on blood glucose, insulin and cytokine levels. Rat diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of nicotinamide and streptozotocin. Diabetic rats were dosed with i.p. baicalin or oral metformin daily for 8 days. Blood glucose, insulin and hepatic glycogen were determined using conventional methods. The activity of hepatic hexokinase was determined using a coupled assay with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase. Serum levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and adiponectin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Administration of baicalin at 50 or 100 mg/kg significantly decreased plasma glucose levels in a dose dependent manner. The serum insulin level was not increased by baicalin treatment. Administration of baicalin at a high dose (100 mg/kg) resulted in a significant increase of liver glycogen content and a reduction of serum TNF-α. The activity of hepatic hexokinase was significantly increased after dosing baicalin at 25, 50 or 10 mg/kg. Administration of baicalin (50 or 10 mg/kg) or metformin (10 mg/kg) significantly alleviated the morphological injury to the pancreas caused by STZ. The possible mechanisms contributing to the hypoglycemic effect include increasing the hepatic glycogen content and glycolysis, and reducing the serum levels of TNF-α.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To construct a lamivudine-resistant plasmid containing 1.2 unit genome of duck hepatitis B virus and identify its replication and drug-resistance in avian LMH hepatica cells. METHODS The recombinant plasmid PBS-DHBV1.2 was constructed using the 1.2-genome length DHBV DNA sequence from a dimer DHBV genome with pcDNA3.1 as the template. With site-directed mutagenesis, we obtained PBS-DHBV1.2-M512V plasmids with polymerase gene mutation from PBS-DHBV1.2. Two constructed plasmids were transiently transfected into LMH cells using FuGENETM6 transfection reagent and cultured in the medium containing different concentrations of lamivudine. Southern blot hybridization was performed to detect DHBV replication intermediates. RESULTS PCR amplification, restriction digestion and plasmid sequencing all confirmed successful construction of PBS-DHBV1.2-M512V recombinant plasmid. Southern blot analysis identified the presence of all the expected DHBV replication intermediates in LMH cells. The replication capacity of the mutant plasmid was decreased by 2.7 times compared with that of the wild plasmid. The IC(50) of lamivudine was 37.12∓8.81 ng/ml for the mutant, greater than that of the wild plasmid (10.90∓4.80 ng/ml). CONCLUSION Compared with the wild plasmid, the mutant plasmid has a lower replication capacity and sensitivity to lamivudine in vitro.

Abstract
Nanostructured polyanilines (PANIs) are selected quite often as the matrix for the synthesis of inorganic/conductive polymer composites due to their excellent optical, electrical and magnetic properties. Herein both 2D lamellar PANI and the cor responding composite loading TiO2 species were successfully prepared from a microemulsion system, as composed by dodecyl benzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) and water. The composite was achieved through a simultaneous polymerization of aniline in the presence of ammonium persulfate and hydrolysis of tetrabutyl titanate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images indicate clearly that 2D PANI lamella are formed through organization of small PANI sheets. The inter-lamellar distance of PANI and that of TiO2/polyaniline composite, as derived from X-ray diffraction (XRD), is about 3.4 nm (nearly twice the length of one DBS molecule), suggesting that PANI and double-layered DBSA species are arranged in an alternated way. FTIR spectrum displays that PANI chains exhibit quinonoid and benzenoid strutures while both Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate that rutile TiO2 is produced upon hydrolyzation of tetrabutyl titanate in the microemulsion system. Moreover, UV-Vis spectrum suggests that the electronic absorption behaviour of PANI species is influenced upon loading TiO2.

Abstract
The nucleotide sequences of M and F genes from a field strain of peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) ("China/Tib/Gej/07-30") was firstly determined. The M gene was 1 483 nucleotides in length with a single open reading frame (ORF), encoding a protein of 335 amino acids. The F gene was 2411 nucleotides in length, encoding a protein of 546 amino acids. The resulting nucleotide sequence and the deduced amino acid sequences were compared with the homologous regions of other PPRV isolates. The nucleotide sequences of M and F genes of the "China/Tib/Gej/07-30" was 92.4%-97.7% and 85.5%-96.1% identical to other PPRV isolates, respectively, while a homology of 97.0%-98.2% and 94.3%-98.2% could be observed at the amino acids level respectively. Several sequence motifs in the M and F genes had been identified on the basis of conservation in the PPRVs and the morbilliviruses. The 3' untranslated region of M gene was 443 nucleotides in length with 82.4%-93.5% identical to other PPRV isolates. The 5' untranslated region of F gene was 634 nucleotides in length with 76.2%-91.7% identical to other PPRV isolates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammation and coagulation are two intimately cross-linked defense mechanisms of most, if not all organisms to injuries. During cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), these two processes are activated and interact with each other through several common pathways, which may result in subsequent organ dysfunction. In the present study, we hypothesized that the addition of nitric oxide, prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), and aprotinin to the systemic circulation, hereby referred to as blood hibernation, would attenuate the inflammation and coagulation induced by CPB. METHODS Thirty adult mongrel dogs were equally divided into five groups, anesthetized and placed on hypothermic CPB (32 degrees C). Each group received respectively the following treatments: (1) inhalation of 40 ppm nitric oxide; (2) intravenous infusion of 20 ng x kg(-1) x min(-1) of PGE1; (3) 80,000 kallikrein inhibitor units (KIU)/kg of aprotinin; (4) the combination of all three agents (blood hibernation group); and (5) no treatment (control group) during CPB. Activation of leukocyte, platelet, endothelial cell, and formation of thrombin were assessed after CPB. RESULTS As compared with the other four groups, leukocyte counts were higher, while plasma elastase, interleukin-8, CD11b mRNA expression, myeloperoxidase activities and lung tissue leukocyte counts were lower in the blood hibernation group (P < 0.05 versus other four groups after CPB). Plasma prothrombin fragment (PTF)1+2, and platelet activation factors were lower, while platelet counts were higher in the blood hibernation group (P < 0.05 versus other four groups at 6 and 12 hours after CPB). Electron microscopy showed endothelial pseudopods protrusion, with cell adherence in all four groups except the blood hibernation group where endothelial cells remained intact. CONCLUSION Blood hibernation, effected by the addition of nitric oxide, PGE1 and aprotinin to the circulating blood during extra-corporeal circulation, was observed to attenuate the inflammation and coagulation induced by cardiopulmonary bypass, most likely by inhibiting the important common intermediates between the two cross-linked processes.

Abstract
Peste des petits ruminants virus is a member of Morbillivirus Paramyxoviridae. The complete genome of a Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) isolate, China/Tib/07 was sequenced and molecular characteristics was analyzed. The internal sequences of the virus genome were amplified by RT-PCR with primers designed according to the published data in GenBank, while the sequences of the 3' and 5' ends of the genome were determined by RACE. Amplification products were directly sequenced,assembled and analyzed with DNAStar4.0. Results showed that China/Tib/07 genome consisted of 15 948 nucleotides in length, encoding six structural proteins and two non-structural proteins just like other known PPRV genomes. Phylogenetically, the virus genome shared homology of 91.6%-98.1% with Southwest Asian isolates among PPRV strains and the highest homology of 64.3% with rinderpest virus among morbillivirus members.

Abstract
It is important to develop new antibiotics aimed at novel targets. The investigation found that the leaf extracts from five maples (Acer platanoides, Acer campestre, Acer rubrum, Acer saccharum and Acer truncatum Bunge collected in Denmark, Canada and China) and their component tannic acid displayed antibacterial ability against 24 standard bacteria strains with the minimum inhibitory concentration of 0.3-8.0 mg/mL. Unlike the standard antibiotic levofloxacin (LFX), these samples inhibited Gram-positive bacteria more effectively than they inhibited Gram-negative bacteria. These samples effectively inhibited two antidrug bacterial strains. The results show that these samples inhibit bacteria by a different mechanism from LFX. These samples potently inhibited b-ketoacyl-ACP reductase (FabG), which is an important enzyme in bacterial fatty acid synthesis. Tannic acid showed the strongest inhibition on FabG with a half inhibition concentration of 0.78 microM (0.81 microg/mL). Furthermore, tannic acid and two maple leaf extracts showed time-dependent irreversible inhibition of FabG. These three samples also exhibited better inhibition on bacteria. It is suggested that FabG is the antibacteria target of maple leaf extracts and tannic acid, and both reversible and irreversible inhibitions of FabG are important for the antibacterial effect.

The N gene and genome promoter nucleotide sequence of a Chinese Peste des petits rumiants virus (PPRV) ("China/Tib/Gej/07-30") was firstly determined. The length of N gene was 1689 nucleotides with a single open reading frame (ORF). The nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence was compared with the homologous region of other PPRV isolates. The nucleotide sequence of the "China/Tib/Gej/07-30" was 91.7%-97.6% identical to other PPRV isolates, while a homology of 94.9%-98.5% could be observed at the amino acids level. The N gene encoded a protein of 525 amino acids. Several sequence motifs were identified on the basis of conservation in the PPRVs and the morbilliviruses. The genome length of promoter region was 107 nucleotides with 91.8%-98.2% identity to other PPRV isolates. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the "China/Tib/Gej/07-30" belonged to the Asian lineage.
