Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the therapeutic effect of oral glucosamine (GS) as an adjunct to hyaluronic acid (HA) injection on patients with temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA). METHODS In this clinical trial, 136 participants, diagnosed as TMJ OA clinically and radiographically, were enrolled and randomized into two groups (group GS + HA: oral GS + HA injection; group placebo + HA: oral placebo + HA injection). Pain, maximum interincisal mouth opening (MMO), the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TGF-β in TMJ synovial were defined as the outcome measurements and conducted before operation, and at 1-month and 1-year follow-up. RESULTS In both groups, pain scores were decreased and MMOs were increased at 1-month and 1-year follow-up, the changes at 1-year follow-up showed statistically significant intergroup differences. At 1-month follow-up, only IL-6 concentration was lower in group GS + HA than that in group placebo + HA. One year later, TGF-β concentration was higher and IL-6 and IL-1β concentrations were lower in group GS + HA than those in group placebo + HA. CONCLUSIONS Both strategies alleviated symptoms in short term, but the patients treated with GS benefited more than those with placebo in long term, which may be due to the suppression of IL-1β and IL-6 and the stimulation of TGF-β.

Abstract
An atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating on active materials of a lithium ion battery is a more effective strategy for improving battery performance than other coating technologies. However, substantial uncertainty still remains about the underlying physics and role of the ALD coating in improving battery performance. Although improvement in the stability and capacity of CeO2 thin film coated particles for batteries has been reported, a detailed and accurate description of the mechanism has not been provided. We have developed a multiphysics-based model that takes into consideration stress mechanics, diffusion of lithium ion, and dissolution of transition-metal ions of spinel LiMn2O4 cathode. The model analyzes how different coating thicknesses affect diffusion-induced stress generation and, ultimately, crack propagation. Experimentally measured diffusivity and dissolution rates were incorporated into the model to account for a trade-off between delayed transport and prevention of side reactions. Along with experimental results, density functional theory results are used to explain how a change in volume, due to dissolution of active material, can affect battery performance. The predicted behavior from the model is well-matched with experimental results obtained on coated and uncoated LiMn2O4-Li foil cells. The proposed approach and explanations will serve as important guidelines for thin film coating strategies for various battery materials.

Abstract
A hypoxic microenvironment plays important roles in the progression of solid tumors, including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have gained much attention in the past few years. However, it is not clear whether lncRNAs can regulate hypoxia adaptation of OSCC or which lncRNAs participate in this process. Using a lncRNA microarray, we analyzed the aberrant lncRNA expression profiles in OSCC tissues compared with paired normal oral mucosa and in hypoxic OSCC cells compared with normoxic OSCC cells. The top 10 lncRNAs that had more than threefold increase with P-value <0.01 in both microarray data were validated by qRT-PCR. Among the top 10 lncRNAs, hyaluronan synthase 2 antisense 1 (HAS2-AS1) was the only one that has a hypoxia-responsive element (HRE) on its promoter region and has been validated to increase in OSCC tissues and in cells cultured under hypoxia. Tumor HAS2-AS1 levels were closely associated with lymph node metastasis and hypoxic tumor status in patients with OSCC. Moreover, the hypoxia-induced HAS2-AS1 expression is dependent on HIF-1α which directly binds to and activates the transcription of HAS2-AS1. In addition, HAS2-AS1 mediates hypoxia-induced epithelial mesenchymal transition of OSCC cells via stabilizing HAS2. In conclusion, our results suggest that hypoxia would induce an overexpression of HAS2-AS1 in an HIF-1α dependent manner. The increase of HAS2-AS1 plays important roles mediating the hypoxia-regulated EMT and invasiveness of OSCC.

Abstract
Objective:To observe and assess the significance of seated supine positioning nystagmus (SSPN) in the diagnosis of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(BPPV).Method:Two hundreds patients who were diagnosed BPPV were tested with the seated supine positioning test(SSPT) to observe SSPN,then were tested Supine roll test(SRT) and Dix-Hallpike test(DHT). According to the result of SRT and DHT,patients were divided into different groups. The positive rate and feature of SSPN in different types of BPPV was analyzed.Result:Among the 200 patients,116 cases(58.0%) of them showed SSPN. Among the 116 cases who were divided to the posterior semicircular canal BPPV(PSC-BPPV) group,72 cases of them showed SSPN. Horizontal semicircular canal BPPV(HSC-BPPV) group were 60 cases,44 cases showed SSPN. Anterior semicircular canal BPPV(ASC-BPPV) group were 4 cases and none of them showed SSPN. The direction of SSPN was a combination of torsional nystagmus with the upper pole of the eyes beating toward the affected side combined with vertical nystagmus beating upward (toward the forehead) typically in the PSC-BPPV group. Canalolithiasis of HSC were 41 cases,and 28 cases showed SSPN,and SSPN was contralesional in 22 cases(78.6%) and ipsilesional in 6 cases. Cupulolithiasis of HSC were 19 cases and 16 cases showed SSPN,and SSPN was ipsilesional in 16 cases.Conclusion:Significance of the seated supine positioning nystagmus in different types of BPPV is different.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a highly active, supported nanostructured metal nanoparticle catalyst with an ultrathin porous shell and gaps between the metal nanoparticles and the shell for size-selective reactions. The size-selectivity of the catalysts could be realized through the porous shell. The gaps were able to reduce catalytic activity loss due to the contact areas between the shell and the catalytic sites. Evaluations of the activity and selectivity of the catalysts were made by catalytic hydrogenation of n-hexene versus cis-cyclooctene. Further verification of the high catalytic activity of the nanostructured catalysts was by oxidation of carbon monoxide.

Abstract
PURPOSE The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of microwave ablation as a substitute for surgery in patients with a mucocele of the anterior lingual salivary glands. MATERIALS AND METHODS In the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Hospital of Stomatology, Sichuan University (Chengdu, China), 78 patients with a clinical diagnosis of a mucocele of the anterior lingual salivary glands underwent microwave ablation from November 2012 to May 2015. Outcome and data on age, gender, size of lesion, history of trauma, and duration of lesion development for each patient were collected. RESULTS In this series, all patients fully recovered and only 5 patients received a second ablation. Wound healing was uneventful in all cases and a small scar was observed in only 6 patients. No serious complications were observed except for local discomfort in 2 cases and tongue tip numbness in 3 cases, but the problems resolved within several days without management. CONCLUSION Microwave ablation is a safe, straightforward, less invasive, economic, and effective therapeutic method for a mucocele of the anterior lingual salivary glands and can be used as a primary treatment modality before considering surgery.

Abstract
Traditional therapy for cancer is subject to some evident obstacles, including low effectiveness, resistance, systemic complication, etc. Gold nanostructures responsive to near-infrared (NIR) light are attractive for non-invasive and targeted therapy because of their unique physical properties especially strong absorption and scattering, and high surface area-to-volume ratio as well as the ease of which their surface chemistry can be manipulated to enhance biocompatibility surface modification and functionalization. In this Review, the progress of photothermal therapy (PTT) as well as the targeted delivery of anticancer agents as the predominant applications of gold nanostructures is detailed, with a focus on imaging-guided therapy and optimizing operational parameters. The NIR light-controlled targeted delivery and/or photothermal ablation of gold nanostructures in the treatment of metastasis are also briefly discussed. These gold nanostructures pave the way for developing better therapeutic strategies of cancer.

Abstract
The wild-type p53 induced phosphatase 1 (WIP1) is an oncogene overexpressed in a variety of human cancers. Here, we demonstrated that WIP1 silencing reduced MMP-9 and VEGF-C expression as well as migration and invasion of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) cells. Overexpression of MMP-9 or VEGF-C restored migration and invasion in WIP1 knockdown cells, indicating that MMP-9 and VEGF-C are downstream targets of WIP1 signaling. Levels of cyclin D1 and c-Myc, targets of Wnt/β-catenin pathway, were significantly decreased by WIP1 silencing. In addition, WIP1 expression was positively associated with metastasis and prognosis of ACC patients as well as with MMP-9 or VEGF-C in ACC tissues.

Abstract
Background Despite recent advances in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) diagnosis and therapy, disease recurrence remains common and is strongly associated with mortality. It is therefore critical to identify new targets for both treatment and diagnostic purposes. We aimed at investigating the role of PA28α, a proteasomal activator in OSCC. Methods The expression of PA28α was examined in a panel of OSCC cell lines and tissues, associated with oncomine analysis. In a large OSCC patient cohort, the prognostic value of PA28α expression was evaluated. Primary clinical end points were recurrence-free and overall survival rate. Functional involvement of PA28α in OSCC was examined in both in vitro and in vivo models upon specific siRNA knockdown. Results PA28α was found to be overexpressed in OSCC cell lines and tumor tissues. High expression of PA28α was significantly associated with recurrence and poorer overall survival. Specific knockdown of PA28α inhibited OSCC cell proliferation, migration, invasion in vitro and reduced the growth of OSCC xenografts in vivo. Multivariate Cox regression analyses revealed PA28α as independent prognostic predictors. Conclusions These results suggest that PA28α is involved in OSCC oncogenesis and may serve as a potential prognostic factor. The ionic and electronic conductivities of ceria ALD-coated and uncoated LiMn2O4 and LiMn1.5Ni0.5O4 samples were studied. The ionic conductivity of the ceria films resulted in the improved performance and longer life cycle of the CeO2 ALD-coated samples.

Abstract
Conventional oligonucleotide based drug delivery systems suffer from lengthy synthetic protocols, high cost, and poor chemical or enzymatic stability under certain circumstances. Canonical free individual nucleosides cannot form stable nanostructures in aqueous solution as drug vehicles. Here, we report the development of a monomeric self-assembled nucleoside nanoparticle (SNNP) into an efficient drug delivery system which has currently no parallel in such field. This was achieved using a l-configurational pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidine nucleoside building block that can form robust discrete nanoparticles in just one step with water as the sole solvent. Its high biocompatibility and low toxicity was demonstrated in vitro and in vivo. In mouse xenograft model of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), SNNP loaded with 5-fluoro-uracile (5-FU-SNNP) remarkably retarded the tumor growth compared with free 5-FU, albeit SNNP alone showed no antitumor effect. The stability in blood circulation and the effective concentration of 5-FU in tumor tissue were increased upon the loading with SNNP. TUNEL and immunohistochemistry analyses further indicated that the superior in vivo antitumor efficacy of 5-FU-SNNP compared to free 5-FU was associated with an enhanced degree of inhibition of cell proliferation and stimulation of cell apoptosis. Furthermore, SNNP alleviated the toxic side effects of 5-FU. These findings suggested that when loaded with SNNP, 5-FU has better antitumor efficacy and lower side effects, indicating that SNNP can efficiently act as a readily accessible, robust, biocompatible and low-toxic nanobiomaterial which may find wide therapeutic applications clinically in the future.

Abstract
Tumor cell survival in the hostile distant organ is a rate-limiting step in cancer metastasis. Bone marrow-derived myeloid cells can form a premetastatic niche and provide a tumor-promoting microenvironment. However, it is unclear whether these myeloid cells in the premetastatic site have any direct effect on tumor cell survival. Here, we report that chemokine CCL9 was highly induced in Gr-1(+)CD11b(+) immature myeloid cells and in premetastatic lung in tumor-bearing mice. Knockdown of CCL9 in myeloid cells decreased tumor cell survival and metastasis. Importantly, CCL9 overexpression in myeloid cells lacking TGFβ signaling rescued the tumor metastasis defect observed in mice with myeloid-specific Tgfbr2 deletion. The expression level of CCL23, the human orthologue for CCL9, in peripheral blood mononuclear cells correlated with progression and survival of cancer patients. Our study demonstrates that CCL9 could serve as a good candidate for anti-metastasis treatment by targeting the rate-limiting step of cancer cell survival. In addition, targeting CCL9 may avoid the adverse effects of TGFβ-targeted therapy.

Abstract
Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has been known to be a highly aggressive disease associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. To investigate the relationship between HPV and chronic inflammation in oropharyngeal carcinogenesis, we collected 140 oral mucous fresh specimens including 50 OPSCC patients, 50 cancer in situ, 30 precancerous lesions, and 10 normal oral mucous. Our data demonstrated that there was a significantly higher proportion of severe chronic inflammation in dysplastic epithelia in comparison with that in normal tissues (P<0.001). The positive rate of HPV 16 was parallel with the chronic inflammation degrees from mild to severe inflammation (P<0.05). The positive rate of HPV 16 was progressively improved with the malignant progression of oral mucous (P<0.05). In addition, CD11b+ LIN- HLA-DR-CD33+ MDSCs were a critical cell population that mediates inflammation response and immune suppression in HPV-positive OPSCC. These indicated that persistent chronic inflammation-related HPV infection might drive oropharyngeal carcinogenesis and MDSCs might pay an important role during this process. Thus, a combination of HPV infection and inflammation expression might become a helpful biomedical marker to predict oropharyngeal carcinogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND PA28γ was suggested to play a role in malignant progression. This paper aimed to investigate the association between PA28γ and the prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) in cohort studies. METHODS The PA28γ expression level was assessed by immunohistochemistry in a total of 368 OSCC patients from three independent cohorts. The Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to determine multivariate hazard ratios for Overall Survival (OS). Model discrimination was measured using C Statistic. Additionally, OS was analyzed in Head Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) data set. Functional analyses were conducted both in-vitro and in-vivo. FINDINGS The median follow-up times of patients in the three studies were 60, 52, and 51 months. High expression of PA28γ was identified in tumors from 179 of 368 patients (48.6%). Compared with low expression, high expression of PA28γ was strongly associated with worse OS, with relative risks of 5.14 (95% CI, 2.51-10.5; P < 0.001), 2.82 (95% CI, 1.73-4.61; P < 0.001), and 3.85 (95% CI, 1.59-9.37; P = 0.003). PA28γ expression was also associated with disease-free survival in all three cohorts (P < 0.005). These findings are consistent with TCGA HNSCC data (P < 0.006). The prediction of all-cause mortality was significantly improved when PA28γ was added to the traditional clinical factors (Model 3, C statistic value: 0.78 VS 0.73, P = 0.016). In functional analyses, we found that PA28γ silencing dramatically inhibited the growth, proliferation and mobility of OSCC cells in vitro and reduced tumor growth and angiogenesis in tumor-bearing mice. INTERPRETATION PA28γ overexpression is associated with adverse prognosis in patients with OSCC. The aberrant expression of PA28γ may contribute to the pathogenesis and progression of OSCC. RESEARCH IN CONTEXT OSCC is one of the most common HNSCC, which have a high lethally rate. However, few prognostic markers have been applied in the clinical practice. We found that PA28γ in OSCC tumor tissues were significantly high expression than those in normal tissues. As the results of the three cohorts from two independent research centers and from an additional validation cohort from a US population in the TCGA dataset, we demonstrate PA28γ is a good predictor of the risk of death in OSCC. Meanwhile, we demonstrate PA28γ have a potential role in OSCC tumorigenesis.

Abstract
microRNAs(miRNAs) can regulate epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) through transcription factors, however, little is known whether EMT transcription factors can modulate miRNAs and further induce EMT and cancer metastasis. Here we show that overexpression of Snail and Slug leads to a mesenchymal phenotype and morphology and enhances cell invasion along with stem cell properties in squamous cell carcinoma of oral tongue (OTSCC) cells. Repression of miR-101 expression by Snail and Slug is essential for Snail/Slug-induced malignant phenotypes. The suppression of miR-101 subsequently activates EZH2, the sole histone methyltransferase, inducing EMT, migration and invasion of OTSCC cells. Importantly, co-overexpression of Slug and Snail correlates with poor survival and elevated EZH2 expression in two independent patient cohorts of OTSCC specimens. These findings defined a Snail and Slug/miR-101/EZH2 pathway as a novel regulatory axis of EMT-mediated-microRNA signaling.

Here, we report that ectopic overexpression of c-kit in ACC cell lines is sufficient for acquisition of mesenchymal traits, enhanced cell invasion, along with stem cell properties defined by the presence of a CD133+/CD44+ cell subpopulation. c-kit positively regulated expression of known EMT inducers, also activating TGF-β to contribute to EMT. c-kit itself was induced by TGF-β in ACC cell lines and required for TGF-β-induced EMT. Xenograft experiments showed that c-kit cooperated with oncogenic Ras to promote tumorigenesis in vivo. Finally, in human specimens of ACC, we found that c-kit was abnormally overexpressed and correlated with the prognosis of ACC. Our findings define an important function for c-kit in ACC progression by orchestrating EMT, and they implicate this gene product as a marker of poor prognosis in this disease.
