Abstract
We introduced a simple chemical method to synthesize semimetal bismuth nanoparticles in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) by reducing Bi(3+) with sodium borohydride (NaBH(4)) in the presence of poly(vinylpyrroldone) (PVP) at room temperature. The size and dispersibility of Bi nanoparticles can be easily controlled by changing the synthetic conditions such as the molar ratio of PVP to BiCl(3) and the concentration of BiCl(3). The UV-visible absorption spectra of Bi nanoparticles of different diameters are systematically studied. The surface plasmon peaks broaden with the increasing molar ratio of PVP to BiCl(3) as the size of bismuth nanoparticles decreases. Infrared (IR) spectra of the complexes with different molar ratios of PVP/BiCl(3) show a strong interaction between the carboxyl oxygen (C=O) of PVP and Bi(3+) ion and a weak interaction between the carboxyl oxygen (C=O) of PVP and the Bi atom in nanoparticles. This indicates that PVP serves as an effective capping ligand, which prevents the nanoparticles from aggregation.

Abstract
Hexagonal CoO nanocrystals are coarsened under hydrothermal conditions to investigate the effect of particle size on phase transformation and stability property. Structural stability and phase transformation of the hexagonal CoO phase have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction with Rietveld refinement, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure, and differential scanning calorimeter. It is found that the hexagonal CoO phase is a metastable phase, which increases its grain size from 50 to 250 nm for refluxing times from 1 to 6 h at 200 degrees C. After 12 h, cubic-structured CoO grains with an average grain size of 20 nm are observed, which spread around big hexagonal CoO grains. After about 24 h, only the cubic CoO phase with an average grain size of 25 nm is detected. The onset temperature of hexagonal-to-cubic phase transformation in CoO is estimated to be 378 degrees C by DSC, using a heating rate of 20 deg/min. The results obtained indicate that the hexagonal-to-cubic phase transformation in nanocrystalline CoO is by nucleation and growth mechanism, starting from the surface to the center of the hexagonal grains.

Abstract
The objective of the current study was to examine the effect of dietary ratio of linoleic acid (LA) to alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) on the humoral immune response in laying hens and further on the passive immunity of their progeny. Thirty-two Single Comb White Leghorn laying hens, 24 wk of age, were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 diets that had LA-to-LNA ratios of 0.8, 5.4, 12.5, and 27.7, respectively, by changing the proportions of sunflower and linseed oils. After 5 wk on the experimental diets, hens were immunized intramuscularly with 1 mg of BSA, followed by 2 boosters 2 and 6 wk later. Serum and egg yolk were obtained weekly from 0 to 6 wk following the first injection of BSA. One week after the second booster, fertile eggs were collected and incubated. The sera of 11-d-old embryos and hatchlings were collected. All serum samples were stored at -20 degrees C before analysis. The results showed that dietary LA-to-LNA ratio had no effect on the total IgG and BSA-specific antibody IgG concentrations in the serum or egg yolk of laying hens. Hatchlings from hens fed the diet containing the LA-to-LNA ratio of 12.4 showed lower (P < 0.05) BSA-specific IgG titer in the serum than those from hens given the diet containing LA-to-LNA ratio of 0.8. A lower (P < 0.05) total IgG concentration was observed in hatchlings from hens fed the diet containing LA-to-LNA ratio of 12.4 compared with those from hens fed diets containing 0.8 and 5.4 of LA-to-LNA ratios. It is suggested that the dietary ratio of LA to LNA has no effect on laying hen humoral response but affects the passive immunity of hatching chicks.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with high blood cholesterol and high risk for developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, management of body weight and obesity are increasingly considered as an important approach to maintaining healthy cholesterol profiles and reducing cardiovascular risk. The present review addresses the effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) on fat deposition, body weight and composition, safety, as well as mechanisms involved in animals and humans. Animal studies have shown promising effects of CLA on body weight and fat deposition. The majority of the animal studies have been conducted using CLA mixtures that contained approximately equal amounts of trans-10, cis-12 (t10c12) and cis-9, trans-11 (c9t11) isomers. Results of a few studies in mice fed CLA mixtures with different ratios of c9t11 and t10c12 isomers have indicated that the t10c12 isomer CLA may be the active form of CLA affecting weight gain and fat deposition. Inductions of leptin reduction and insulin resistance are the adverse effects of CLA observed in only mice. In pigs, the effects of CLA on weight gain and fat deposition are inconsistent, and no adverse effects of CLA have been reported. A number of human studies suggest that CLA supplementation has no effect on body weight and insulin sensitivity. Although it is suggested that the t10c12 CLA is the antiadipogenic isomer of CLA in humans, the effects of CLA on fat deposition are marginal and more equivocal as compared to results observed in animal studies. Mechanisms through which CLA reduces body weight and fat deposition remain to be fully understood. Proposed antiobesity mechanisms of CLA include decreased energy/food intake and increased energy expenditure, decreased preadipocyte differentiation and proliferation, decreased lipogenesis, and increased lipolysis and fat oxidation. In summary, CLA reduces weight gain and fat deposition in rodents, while produces less significant and inconsistent effects on body weight and composition in pigs and humans. New studies are required to examine isomer-specific effects and mechanisms of CLA in animals and humans using purified individual CLA isomers.

Abstract
Linkage analyses increasingly complement cytological and traditional plant breeding techniques by providing valuable information regarding genome organization and transmission genetics of complex polyploid species. This study reports a genome map of buffelgrass (Pennisetum ciliare (L.) Link syn. Cenchrus ciliaris L.). Maternal and paternal maps were constructed with restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) segregating in 87 F1 progeny from an intraspecific cross between two heterozygous genotypes. A survey of 862 heterologous cDNAs and gDNAs from across the Poaceae, as well as 443 buffelgrass cDNAs, yielded 100 and 360 polymorphic probes, respectively. The maternal map included 322 RFLPs, 47 linkage groups, and 3464 cM, whereas the paternal map contained 245 RFLPs, 42 linkage groups, and 2757 cM. Approximately 70 to 80% of the buffelgrass genome was covered, and the average marker spacing was 10.8 and 11.3 cM on the respective maps. Preferential pairing was indicated between many linkage groups, which supports cytological reports that buffelgrass is a segmental allotetraploid. More preferential pairing (disomy) was found in the maternal than paternal parent across linkage groups (55 vs. 38%) and loci (48 vs. 15%). Comparison of interval lengths in 15 allelic bridges indicated significantly less meiotic recombination in paternal gametes. Allelic interactions were detected in four regions of the maternal map and were absent in the paternal map.

Abstract
The current study was carried out to examine the effects of policosanols and phytosterols, alone and in combination, on lipid profiles, cholesterol biosynthesis, and tissue histopathological changes in hamsters. Fifty male Golden Syrian hamsters, weighing 100 to 120 g, were fed a regular rodent chow for 2 wk before being randomly assigned into 5 groups of 10 animals each fed semisynthetic diets for 4 wk. Group 1 was given a control diet that contained 0.25% cholesterol and 5% fat with a PUFA to saturated FA ratio of 0.4. Groups 2 to 5 were fed the control diet and given Octa-6 [a policosanol mixture from sugar cane wax, 25 mg/kg body weight (BW)], Ricewax (a policosanol mixture from rice wax with 50% being converted to the corresponding acids, 50 mg/kg BW), phytosterols (Cholestatin; 1,000 mg/kg BW), and Ricewax (50 mg/kg BW) plus phytosterols (1,000 mg/kg BW), respectively. The results showed that there was no difference between Octa-6 and Ricewax treatments in any of the lipid parameters measured, and both had similar levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (T-C), and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) as the control. Octa-6 but not Ricewax increased (P = 0.03) non-HDL-C as compared with the control. Phytosterols reduced T-C (P < 0.0003) and HDL-C (P < 0.004) without a significant effect on TG and non-HDL-C as compared to the control. Ricewax plus phytosterols had effects similar to those with phytosterols alone. Free cholesterol synthetic rates were not different among the treatments. Policosanols or phytosterols did not show any toxic effects in liver, heart, brain, or kidney. Results suggest that, although phytosterols reduce T-C and HDL-C levels, policosanols have no significant favorable effect in changing lipid levels in hamsters.

Abstract
Effects of maternal dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on the spleen fatty acid composition and BSA-induced wing web swellings were investigated in broilers. One hundred twenty broiler breeder hens 26 wk of age were randomly assigned to diets containing mainly wheat, corn, soy meal, barley, oat and 5% (wt/wt) added sunflower oil, fish oil, or a mix of sunflower and fish oils (1:1). After 2 wk on the experimental diets, birds were inseminated, eggs were collected and incubated. Progeny chicks were then fed identical diets for 6 wk. The maternal dietary oils affected (P < 0.05) n-6 and n-3 PUFA in the spleens of hatching chicks. After 2 wk, n-6 PUFA did not differ among the groups; n-3 PUFA, docosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids were higher (P < 0.05) in the spleens of broilers from hens fed 2.5 or 5% fish oil. After 4 wk, broilers from hens fed 5% fish oil still had higher levels of DHA (P < 0.05) in their spleens than those from hens fed 5% sunflower oil. The BSA-induced wing web swelling response was suppressed (P < 0.05) by n-3 PUFA in breeder hens. Broilers from hens fed high levels of n-3 PUFA had lower (P < 0.05) wing web swelling reactions to BSA at 2 wk (2.5% fish oil) and 4 wk (2.5 and 5% fish oil). In conclusion, n-3 PUFA in breeder hen diets suppressed the BSA-induced wing web swellings of the hens, increased the spleen n-3 fatty acids (especially DHA), and decreased BSA-induced wing web swellings of progeny up to 4 wk of age.

Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the alterations of individual protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms in human liver cancer. Surgical specimens of hepatocellular carcinoma and adjacent normal tissues were extracted into cytosolic and membranous fractions. The level of membrane-bound PKCalpha in the cancer tissue was significantly lower than that in the adjacent normal tissue and consistent with the change in PKC activity. In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between PKCalpha and tumor size. In both cytosolic and membrane fractions, levels of PKCdelta and PKCzeta was significantly higher in the cancer tissue than those in the adjacent normal liver tissue. The alterations in the PKC isoforms signify their roles in the hyperproliferation in liver cancer.

Abstract
The effects of fat source on immune response of the offspring of the Single Comb White Leghorn laying hens were investigated. The laying hens were fed for 6 wk with a wheat-soybean meal basal diet with added sunflower oil (SO), animal oil (AO), linseed oil (LO), or menhaden fish oil (FO) at 5% (wt/wt). Upon hatching, the chicks (30/group) were given the same types of diets for 8 wk. The dietary SO, AO, and LO provided different n-6 to n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) ratios. The FO and LO had ratios of n-6 to n-3 PUFA that were close but had different components of n-3 PUFA. The results demonstrated that the chicks fed LO or FO had significantly lower (P < 0.05) splenocyte proliferative response to ConA than the chicks fed SO or AO at either 4 wk or 8 wk of age, with a stronger (P < 0.05) suppressive effect produced by LO at 4 wk. A significantly lower (P < 0.05) splenocyte response to PWM was produced by the chicks fed AO, LO, and FO compared with the chicks fed SO at 8 wk. The thymus lymphocyte proliferation in response to ConA at 4 wk was lower (P < 0.05) in the chicks fed AO, LO, and FO than in the chicks fed SO. Both LO and FO elevated (P < 0.05) the proportion of IgM+ lymphocytes in spleen, but only FO increased (P < 0.05) the serum IgG concentration. The LO elevated (P < 0.05) the percentage of CD8+ T-lymphocytes but not the ratio of CD4+ to CD8+ cells (P > 0.05) in spleen. Growths of thymus, spleen, and bursa were impacted significantly (P < 0.05) by the amount of dietary PUFA, the ratio of n-6 to n-3 fatty acids, and n-3 PUFA components.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Taiwan is endemic for viral hepatitis infections. A field survey was performed in the isolated aborigines in Hualien, eastern Taiwan, to investigate the geographic and ethnic variations in hepatitis epidemiology. MATERIALS AND METHODS From 1996 to 1998, blood was drawn from 1,748 subjects from two southern Ami and two northern Atayal villages for serum markers of hepatitis A, B and C. RESULTS Hepatitis A infection approached 100% in all groups. Hepatitis B infection and carrier rates were higher in the Atayal than in the Ami (92.3% vs. 49.1% and 20.8% vs. 5.3%; p<0.01). Hepatitis C infection rates were higher in three villages (27.5%, 20.1% and 25.4% vs. 3.6%; p<0.01). Hepatitis C infection increased with age (p<0.01) while hepatitis B infection did not. CONCLUSION Hepatitis A infected most aborigines before the age of 15 years. Hepatitis B seldom infected people after the age of 15 years, while hepatitis C continued to infect people who were older. Geographic factors are important for hepatitis C infection, whereas for hepatitis B infection, in addition ethnicity is also important.

Abstract
In order to enhance the stability of vitamin D2(VD2), the inclusion complex of VD2 with beta-cyclodextrin(beta-CD) was added in "Longmu Zhuanggu Chongji", a medicine of children for the prevention and cure of rickets. The VD2 in beta-CD-VD2 inclusion complex was satisfactorily determined by both reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) and ultraviolet spectrometry(UV). The experimental results from UV were in well consistent with those from HPLC. The accuracy and recovery of HPLC measurement were analyzed, and their relative standard deviation(RSD) were given to be 0.63% and 1.54%, indicating the method is quite correct and reliable, and the linear regression equation is reasonable. The "Longmu Zhuanggu Chongji" containing beta-CD-VD2 inclusion complexes was saponified by a mixture of KOH, vitamin C (VC) and alcohol-water(1:2, V/V) at 70 degrees C, then extracted with petroleum ether. An accurate content of the VD2 product was obtained by HPLC. A simple and rapid HPLC method, which can detect VD2 in the inclusion complex and in "Longmu Zhuanggu Chongji", has been established in this work.

Abstract
A 12,808-nucleotide containing DNA fragment cloned from naphthalene-utilizing (Nah+) Pseudomonas aeruginosa PaK1 was analyzed and compared with the genes (pah(OUS)) of a 14,462-nucleotide DNA fragment from Pseudomonas putida OUS82. The DNA sequence analyses demonstrated that the naphthalene upper-pathway genes and their deduced enzymes were very similar between the two bacteria: nucleotide similarities, 83-93%; amino acid similarities, 79-95%. These genes were also similar to those of the nah operon of plasmid NAH7; in particular, the OUS82 genes were similar to the nah genes, whereas the PaK1 genes were almost identical to the dox genes of Pseudomonas sp. C18. A region homologous with the 84-bp repeated sequence that Eaton (J. Bacteriol., 176, 7757-7762, 1994) has found at a site upstream of he nah operon was found only in a region downstream of the pah(PaK) gene cluster in PaK1 and on both sides of the pah(OUS) gene cluster in OUS82. A PaK1 gene, corresponding to an unknown gene (nahQ) in the nah operon, is located between the 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene dioxygenase gene and the trans-o-hydroxybenzylindenepyruvate (tHBP A) hydratase-aldolase gene (nahE), and was suggested to be involved in the conversion of naphthalene to salicylate. Just downstream of the pah(PaK) gene cluster, a portion of a region was identical to one-third of the transposase gene (tnpA) in a phenol-catabolic plasmid pEST1226.

Abstract
A modified high-performance chromatographic method using UV detection was developed for determination of tramadol concentration in human plasma. Plasma samples were extracted with ethyl acetate in a one-step liquid-liquid extraction (recovery 88.5+/-2.1%). Analysis of the extract was performed on a reversed-phase LiChrospher 60 RP-select B column with a particle size of 5 microm. The mobile phase consisted of 0.05 M KH2PO4 aqueous solution (pH 3.5) and acetonitrile in a ratio of 90:10 (v/v). Metoprolol was used as the internal standard and UV detection at 225 nm was employed. Accuracy of the assay in the concentration range examined was from 1.3 to 11.9% for the intra-day run and from 1.4 to 8.1% for the inter-day run. The precision of this method varied from 1.2 to 8.7%. The reproducibility of the method was determined to be from 0.8 to 7.2% over the six-day period. A limit of detection was 9 ng/ml at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. This validated method was then applied to the determination of tramadol concentrations in healthy volunteers after oral administration of 100 mg of tramadol in capsules of Painlax and Tramal.

Abstract
Without culture, differentiation of bacille Calmette-Guérin-induced lymphadenitis (BCG-LA) from tuberculosis (TB) is sometimes difficult by histology, but is important because of different treatment schemes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of differentiating BCG-LA from TB in lymph nodes (LNs) by molecular analyses of two recently identified genes, pncA and oxyR. In both genes, a single tuberculosis difference exists between Mycobacterium bovis and M. tuberculosis. M tuberculosis complex (MTC) DNA was first detected in nine of ten formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded LNs from patients aged under 20 years with suspected mycobacterial infections, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for IS6110, an insertion sequence specific for MTC species. PCR, together with direct DNA sequencing and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assay, was then performed to identify polymorphic nucleotide in pncA and oxyR, respectively. For comparison, 37 adult cases of tuberculous lymphadenitis were also analysed by PCR-single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) assay for pncA and by PCR-RFLP for oxyR. The results revealed that five of the nine IS6110-positive child cases had a G residue at nucleotide 169 in pncA, and also had a three-band pattern after digesting the amplified oxyR segment with AluI, suggesting BCG-LA. The remaining four child cases, as well as all adult cases with detectable IS6110, showed no motility shift in pncA PCR-SSCP and had the same one-band pattern as M. tuberculosis in oxyR PCR-RFLP, suggesting TB lymphadenitis. The data from molecular analyses showed a good correlation with the vaccination history and clinicopathological findings, except for one case. This study indicates that molecular assay of either oxyR or pncA could be a rapid and useful tool to distinguish BCG-LA from TB.

Abstract
Recently, a new human herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV-8) has been identified in classic, transplant, endemic, and AIDS Kaposi's sarcoma that may be involved in the pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma. The purpose of this study was to evaluate oral AIDS-Kaposi's sarcoma for detection of KSHV/HHV-8 DNA. DNA extracted from 54 oral AIDS-Kaposi's sarcoma lesions (47 initial, 7 postvinblastine treated), 5 non-Kaposi's sarcoma HIV-positive lesions, and 3 non-Kaposi's sarcoma HIV-negative lesions was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction (KS330(233bp)amplicon) for KSHV/HHV-8. The AIDS-Kaposi's sarcoma study population consisted of 52 patients (51:1, men:woman; 92% men having sex with men, 8% heterosexual; mean age, 38 years; mean, CD4 59/mm3) Opportunistic infections occurred in 88% (candidiasis, 65%; Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, 31%; nonoral Kaposi's sarcoma, 25%; mycobacterium avium-intracellulare (MAI), 16%; cytomegalovirus, 14%; herpes simplex virus, 14%). Sexually transmitted diseases occurred in 73% (gonorrhea, 37%; syphilis, 23%; condyloma, 22%; HSV, 16%). Most frequent lesion sites were palate (74%) and gingiva (17%). Most common lesion types were purple nodular (48%) and macular (42%). Histopathologic subtypes were nodular (71%), plaque (27%), and patch (2%). Polymerase chain reaction analysis detected KSHV/HHV-8 DNA in 53 of 54 AIDS-Kaposi's sarcoma lesions (47 of 47 initial, 6 of 7 postvinblastine treatment). KSHV/HHV-8 DNA was not detected in non-Kaposi's sarcoma lesions in HIV-positive or HIV-negative persons. KSHV/HHV-8 DNA sequence is present in a high proportion of oral AIDS-Kaposi's sarcoma lesions. Whether KSHV/HHV-8 is an etiologic agent or a cofactor in the development of this vascular neoplasm is uncertain and remains to be proven. Polymerase chain reaction analysis for KSHV/HHV-8 DNA sequence detection may be helpful in identifying Kaposi's sarcoma in early vascular proliferations, when the characteristic histopathologic features are not present.

Abstract
A new herpesvirus-like DNA sequence (KSHV) has been recently identified in Kaposi's sarcoma from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and non-AIDS patients. In order to verify the role of this new viral agent in Taiwan, a series of Kaposi's sarcoma specimens obtained from AIDS and non-AIDS patients in three medical centers representing different geographic locations of Taiwan were surveyed. A total of seven specimens from AIDS patients and 22 specimens from non-AIDS patients were tested for the presence of this herpesvirus-like agent by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using the published Kaposi's sarcoma 330-233 primers. The tumor DNA was also tested for cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and human herpes-virus type 6 (HHV-6). The Kaposi's sarcoma specimens from AIDS and non-AIDS patients were positive for KSHV except in one case. Only occasional specimens were positive for CMV and EBV, with a slightly higher positive rate for HHV-6 in AIDS and non-AIDS patients. Cloning and sequence analysis of the PCR products from two cases of Kaposi's sarcoma (one each for AIDS and non-AIDS) revealed only minor differences in this DNA sequence, as compared with the published data from north America. These results further support the assumption that this new KSHV is strongly associated with Kaposi's sarcoma in AIDS and non-AIDS patients in Taiwan.

Abstract
Two studies were carried out in a trinitrotoluene (TNT) plant using TNT haemoglobin (TNT-Hb) adduct as a biomarker to study dose-adduct and adduct-response relationships. In the first study, TNT-Hb adduct levels were determined in 117 TNT-exposed workers in different working sites with different exposure conditions. External exposure was calculated from the inhaled air concentration plus skin contamination. TNT-Hb adduct levels in blood were significantly correlated with their external exposure to TNT. Two methods, HPLC-UV and CI-ELISA, were developed for measuring TNT-Hb adduct: good correlations (r = 0.77 and 0.86) were found between these 2 methods. In the second study, TNT cataract was used as an indicator of health effects. The prevalence of cataract and the degree of lenticular damage increased with the increase of blood TNT-Hb level.

Abstract
Disintegrins are a group of snake venom peptides which inhibit human platelet aggregation by acting as glycoprotein IIb-IIIa (GPIIb-IIIa) antagonists. They are cysteine-rich, Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD)-containing peptides, and bind to GPIIb-IIIa complex on platelet membrane with a very high affinity (Kd, 10(-7)-10(-8) M). In this study, we analyzed GPIIb-IIIa complex on platelet membrane by flow cytometry using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-conjugated disintegrins as probes. Of these FITC-conjugated disintegrins, FITC-Rhodostomin is the most sensitive probe because Rhodostomin was conjugated with more FITC molecules than Trigramin and Halysin were. The binding fluorescence intensity of FITC-Trigramin (FITC-Tg), FITC-Halysin (FITC-Hy) and FITC-Rhodostomin (FITC-Rn) was measured in both resting and ADP-activated platelets of diluted human platelet-rich plasma. The binding fluorescence of FITC-disintegrins was abolished by EDTA and 7E3, a monoclonal antibody against GPIIb-IIIa. ADP markedly increased the fluorescence intensity of FITC-Tg and FITC-Hy bound on platelets especially when lower doses of these probes were used, whereas it had little effect on that of FITC-Rn. Therefore, FITC-Tg and FITC-Hy can be used for the detection of the activated platelets as noted by a higher ratio of fluorescence intensity (approx. 2-4) between ADP-activated and resting platelets as compared with that (approx. 1-1.3) in the case of FITC-Rn as the probe. The platelets from three patients with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia were probed with FITC-disintegrins.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
Full-grown oocytes derived from Bufo bufo gargarizans rearing in high temperature environment (28-30 degrees C), called high temperature oocytes, never underwent germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) after progesterone stimulation, no MPF was detected in their ooplasm, but some events which manifested normally at the beginning of progesterone induced maturation process were revealed in these oocytes. It is worth notice an another kind of maturation promoting substance(s) appeared in the ooplasm of high temperature oocyte after the hormone treatment, which was capable of triggering the resumption of meiotic division of the full-grown oocytes derived from hibernating toad (called low temperature oocytes). It is a hibernation factor-dependent maturation promoting substance (HF-MPS), which appeared after decrease of the oocyte endogenous cAMP level. Its appearance depended upon the oocyte protein synthesis, and its activity to inducing GVBD of low temperature oocytes did not inhibited by puromycin. HF-MPS differs from MPF in maturation promoting activity, as low temperature (10 degrees C) delayed obviously HF-MPS' activity but did not influence the rate of GVBD induced by MPF. Further more, probably due to the lack of "hibernation factor(s)", no expression of p34cdc2 gene was detected in high temperature oocytes (unpublished data), neither HF-MPS nor MPF could amplify autocatalytically in the oocytes. So the low temperature (below 15 degrees C) was found to be indispensable for the toad oocyte maturation. If one day we can prove HF-MPS appeared also in the course of oocyte maturation induced by progesterone, the relationship between HF-MPS and MPF may be: [formula: see text] All these discoveries indicated above make a reasonable explanation of the geographical distribution of the toad which was restricted in the region north to the 23 degrees north latitude and east to the 100 degrees east longitude in China.

Abstract
One hundred patients with patent ductus arterious (PDA) were treated successfully by percutaneous transfemoral plug closure since 1985. Age ranged from 5 to 48 years. Among them five had previous ligation of PDA, One was complicated with infective endocarditis, and in four pulmonary hypertension were found. The internal diameter shown in aortograph ranged from 0.26-1.0 cm. Primary success was accomplished after the first trial in 97 patients and second trial was necessary in three cases. However in one patient plug closure was given up after unsuccessful trial. The plug closure was carried out with domestic-made material and instrument in all cases. We adopted the modified Porstmann technique. We believe that the infrainguinal transfemoral approach is simple, and less traumatic. The indication of plug closure can be extended especially to residual or recanalization cases after ligation in selected cases. It may become the method of first choice for PDA. The "papillary type" of PDA is discussed and a specially designed and tailored plug and also a spontaneous flow-directed method were recommended. Frequent ventricular premature beats usually occurred while the catheters were being pushed through chordae tendinae of the tricuspid valve and the way of prevention was discussed. In case of dislodgement of plug, reestablishing the wire locus would be necessary. One to sixty-eight months follow up study after closure showed no sign of recanalization or residual shunt.

Abstract
The effects of seven phenolic compounds isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza on peroxidative damage to liver microsomes, hepatocytes and erythrocytes of rats were studied. The results show that the seven compounds inhibited lipid peroxidation of rat liver microsomes induced by iron/cysteine and Vitamin C/NADPH. The hemolysis of rat erythrocytes induced by hydrogen peroxide was also inhibited. The degree of inhibition varied with different compounds. Among the seven compounds, the action of salvianolic acid A (Sai A) was the most potent. Therefore, the protective action of Sai A against peroxidative damage to isolated rat hepatocytes and their plasma membranes was evaluated further. Malondialdehyde (MDA) production and bleb of the surfaces of rat hepatocytes induced by iron/cysteine were prevented by Sai A. The production of MDA and the consumption of NADPH of the plasma membrane during lipid peroxidation initiated by iron/cysteine and Vitamin C/NADPH were also inhibited. The results strongly suggest that several phenolic compounds like Sai A have a protective action against peroxidative damage to biomembranes.

Abstract
Between January, 1976 and April 1988, 1279 patients underwent open-heart operation in Ren Ji Hospital. Thirty three patients were complicated by infective endocarditis postoperatively, an incidence of 2.58%. Medical treatment was carried out in 29 cases and thirteen were cured. In another three patients of valve prosthetic endocarditis, replacement of prosthetic valve was necessary for their cure. In our series, Gram negative bacilli had been proved by blood culture, autopsy and arterial thrombi in thirteen patients and candida in four, mixed infection in five and staphylococcus aureus in only one case. One should not rely on positive blood culture for the diagnosis. Echocardiographic studies are helpful to early diagnosis and proper treatment. The presence of vegetation or signs of prosthetic valve failure are strong indication for reoperation. In prevention, in addition to strict aseptic technic in the operating room, special emphasis should be focused on the preventive administration of sensitive antibiotics against hospital borne pathogens. All indwelling catheters in arteries and veins, tracheal tubes and urethral catheters should be removed after 72 hours. Efforts to prevent infection after reoperation are important measures for the prevention of infective endocarditis after open-heart operation.
