Gene expression analysis of host spleen responses to Marek's disease virus infection at late tumor transformation phase

Marek's disease is a viral neoplastic disease of chickens caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV). Gene expression patterns have been investigated at different MDV infection stages, but there is limited research about the late tumor transformation phase. In this experiment, 44K Agilent chicken genome-wide expression microarrays were used to profile differential expression in tumorous spleens (TS) from severely morbid chickens and apparently normal spleens from survivors (SS) after MDV infection and expression in noninfected spleens (NS) from controls. There were 4,317 differentially expressed (DE) genes in TS versus NS. However, no DE genes were detected in SS versus NS, suggesting that maintenance of, or return to, homeostasis of gene activity in survivor spleens. Downregulated genes in tumorous spleens mainly enriched in the cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction pathway, and commonly investigated genes in Marek's disease study, IL6, IL18, IFNA, and IFNG were nondifferentially expressed, which indicates host inflammatory response was impaired. The IL10 and TNFRSF8 genes were upregulated in tumorous spleens. We speculated that IL10 might be exploited by MDV to escape from host immune surveillance, as reported for Epstein-Barr virus, which stimulated T cells secreting IL10 to subvert immune response. Previous study reported that transcription from TNFRSF8 promoter could be enhanced by MDV oncogene Meq. In this study, the increased expression of TNFRSF8 indicated interaction between MDV and TNFRSF8, which might facilitate pathogenesis and tumor transformation. The expression of many members in IGF system was changed in tumorous compared with noninfected spleens. The downregulation of IGFBP7 was considered to be associated with MD lymphoma transformation. Gene expression change of multiple regulatory pathways indicated their involvements in facilitating tumor transformation.

Safety climate and workplace violence prevention in state-run residential addiction treatment centers

OBJECTIVE

To examine the association between violence prevention safety climate measures and self reported violence toward staff in state-run residential addiction treatment centers.

METHODS

In mid-2006, 409 staff from an Eastern United States state agency that oversees a system of thirteen residential addiction treatment centers (ATCs) completed a self-administered survey as part of a comprehensive risk assessment. The survey was undertaken to identify and measure facility-level risk factors for violence, including staff perceptions of the quality of existing US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) program elements, and ultimately to guide violence prevention programming. Key informant interviews and staff focus groups provided researchers with qualitative data with which to understand safety climate and violence prevention efforts within these work settings.

RESULTS

The frequency with which staff reported experiencing violent behavior ranged from 37% for "clients raised their voices in a threatening way to you" to 1% for "clients pushed, hit, kicked, or struck you". Findings from the staff survey included the following significant predictors of violence: "client actively resisting program" (OR=2.34, 95% CI=1.35, 4.05), "working with clients for whom the history of violence is unknown" (OR=1.91, 95% CI=1.18, 3.09) and "management commitment to violence prevention" reported as "never/hardly ever" and "seldom or sometimes" (OR=4.30 and OR=2.31 respectively), while controlling for other covariates.

CONCLUSIONS

We utilized a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to begin to describe the risk and potential for violence prevention in this setting. The prevalence of staff physical violence within the agency's treatment facilities was lower than would be predicted. Possible explanations include the voluntary nature of treatment programs; strong policies and consequences for resident behavior and ongoing quality improvement efforts. Quantitative data identified low management commitment to violence prevention as a significant predictor of staff reported violence.

Effects of exercise training on left ventricular remodelling in heart failure patients: an updated meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Objectives:  The purpose of this updated meta-analysis was to determine whether exercise training reversed left ventricular remodelling in heart failure patients. Methods:  Articles were searched in MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, CINAHL, EMBASE and PubMed (up until October, 2011). The anti-remodelling benefit of exercise training was assessed by ejection fraction (EF), end-diastolic volume (EDV) and end-systolic volume (ESV). Standardised mean difference (SMD) together with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was calculated. Subgroup meta-analysis with exercise duration was also conducted. Results:  Fifteen randomised controlled trials with 813 patients were included. Aerobic exercise training improved EF (SMD = 0.44; 95% CI 0.28 to 0.61), EDV (SMD = -0.33; 95% CI -0.49 to -0.16) and ESV (SMD = -0.40; 95% CI -0.57 to -0.23). Subgroup analysis indicated that long-term aerobic exercise (≥6 months) had a marked positive effect on EF (SMD = 0.5; 95% confidence interval 0.31 to 0.69), EDV (SMD = -0.38; 95% CI -0.57 to -0.19) and ESV (SMD = -0.48; 95% CI -0.67 to -0.29), but there was no evidence of benefit with short-term aerobic exercise (<6 months): EF (SMD = 0.27; 95% CI -0.08 to 0.61), EDV (SMD = -0.14; 95% CI -0.48 to 0.21) and ESV (SMD = -0.08; 95% CI -0.47 to 0.30). Strength training (alone or plus aerobic training) was not associated with improvements in EDV and ESV, with all confidence intervals including 0. Conclusions:  Aerobic exercise training, especially long-term duration (≥6 months) reverses left ventricular remodelling in clinically stable patients with heart failure. Strength training (alone or plus aerobic training) did not improve or worsen ventricular remodelling.

A genome-wide SNP scan reveals two loci associated with the chicken resistance to Marek's disease

Marek's disease (MD) is a neoplastic disease in chickens, caused by the Marek's disease virus (MDV). To investigate host genetic resistance to MD, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 67 MDV-infected chickens based on a case and control design, including 57 susceptible chickens in the case group and 10 resistant chickens as controls. After searching 38 655 valid genomic markers, two SNPs were found to be associated with host resistance to MD. One SNP, rs14527240, reaching chromosome-wide significance level (P < 0.01) was located in the SPARC-related modular calcium-binding 1 (SMOC1) gene on GGA5. The other one, GGaluGA156129, reaching genome-wide significance (P < 0.05), was located in the protein tyrosine phosphatase, non-receptor type 3 (PTPN3) gene on GGA2. In addition, expression patterns of these two genes in spleens were detected by qPCR. The expression of SMOC1 was significantly up-regulated (P < 0.05), whereas the expression of PTNP3 did not show significance when the case group was compared with the control group. Up-regulation of SMOC1 in susceptible spleens suggests its important roles in MD tumorigenesis. This is the first study to investigate MD-resistant loci, and it demonstrates the power of GWASs for mapping genes associated with MD resistance.

Recent advances in synthesis and surface modification of lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles for biomedical applications

Lanthanide (Ln)-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) with appropriate surface modification can be used for a wide range of biomedical applications such as bio-detection, cancer therapy, bio-labeling, fluorescence imaging, magnetic resonance imaging and drug delivery. The upconversion phenomenon exhibited by Ln-doped UCNPs renders them tremendous advantages in biological applications over other types of fluorescent materials (e.g., organic dyes, fluorescent proteins, gold nanoparticles, quantum dots, and luminescent transition metal complexes) for: (i) enhanced tissue penetration depths achieved by near-infrared (NIR) excitation; (ii) improved stability against photobleaching, photoblinking and photochemical degradation; (iii) non-photodamaging to DNA/RNA due to lower excitation light energy; (iv) lower cytotoxicity; and (v) higher detection sensitivity. Ln-doped UCNPs are therefore attracting increasing attentions in recent years. In this review, we present recent advances in the synthesis of Ln-doped UCNPs and their surface modification, as well as their emerging applications in biomedicine. The future prospects of Ln-doped UCNPs for biomedical applications are also discussed.

Focusing subwavelength grating coupler for mid-infrared suspended membrane waveguide

A mid-infrared (mid-IR)-focusing subwavelength grating (SWG) coupler and suspended membrane waveguide (SMW) on a silicon-on-insulator wafer are studied. For a transverse-electric mode uniform SWG, finite-difference time-domain simulation predicts 44.2% coupling efficiency with 1 dB bandwidth of about 220 nm and backreflection of 0.78% at 2.75 μm. Then the uniform SWG is curved to a focusing SWG using a phase-matching formula. The SMWs are analyzed by the finite element method and fabricated. An Er3+-Pr3+ co-doped mid-IR fiber laser is used for device characterization. The fabricated mid-IR SWG coupler has 24.7% coupling efficiency.

Serum hepcidin in haemodialysis patients: associations with iron status and microinflammation

Hepcidin plays a key role in iron homeostasis. This cross-sectional study measured the serum hepcidin levels of 48 maintenance haemodialysis patients and 20 age-matched healthy control subjects using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (C-ELISA). Serum hepcidin, interleukin (IL)-6 and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels were significantly higher in maintenance haemodialysis patients compared with control subjects. In all patients, there was a positive correlation between serum hepcidin levels and ferritin, transferrin saturation and IL-6, and an inverse correlation between serum hepcidin and unsaturated iron-binding capacity, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin. Linear regression analyses showed that ferritin and TIBC were independently associated with serum hepcidin levels. In conclusion, serum hepcidin levels are associated with iron status and microinflammation (defined as hsCRP < 15 mg/l, without clinical manifestation of inflammation) in maintenance haemodialysis patients. The C-ELISA method for measuring serum hepcidin should facilitate the routine measurement of hepcidin in clinical practice.

Cost-effectiveness of zoledronic acid in the prevention of skeletal-related events in patients with bone metastases secondary to advanced renal cell carcinoma: application to France, Germany, and the United Kingdom

BACKGROUND

The use of zoledronic acid (ZOL) has recently been shown to significantly reduce the risk of new skeletal-related events (SREs) in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) patients with bone metastases. The present exploratory study assessed the cost-effectiveness of ZOL in this population, adopting a French, German, and United Kingdom (UK) government payer perspective.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This cost-effectiveness model was based on a post hoc retrospective analysis of a subset of patients with RCC who were included in a larger randomized clinical trial of patients with bone metastases secondary to a variety of cancers. In the trial, patients were randomized to receive ZOL (n = 27) or placebo (n = 19) with concomitant antineoplastic therapy every 3 weeks for 9 months (core study) plus 12 months during a study extension. Since the trial did not collect costs or data on the quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) of the patients, these outcomes had to be assumed via modeling exercises. The costs of SREs were estimated using hospital DRG tariffs. These estimates were supplemented with literature-based costs where possible. Drug, administration, and supply costs were obtained from published and internet sources. Consistent with similar economic analyses, patients were assumed to experience quality of life decrements lasting 1 month for each SRE. Uncertainty surrounding outcomes was addressed via multivariate sensitivity analyses.

RESULTS

Patients receiving ZOL experienced 1.07 fewer SREs than patients on placebo. Patients on ZOL experienced a gain in discounted QALYs of approximately 0.1563 in France and Germany and 0.1575 in the UK. Discounted SRE-related costs were substantially lower among ZOL than placebo patients (-€ 4,196 in France, - € 3,880 in Germany, and -€ 3,355 in the UK). After taking into consideration the drug therapy costs, ZOL saved € 1,358, € 1,223, and € 719 in France, Germany, and the UK, respectively. In the multivariate sensitivity analyses, therapy with ZOL saved costs in 67-77% of simulations, depending on the country. The cost per QALY gained for ZOL versus placebo was below € 30,000 per QALY gained threshold in approximately 93-94% of multivariate sensitivity analyses simulations.

CONCLUSIONS

The present analysis suggests that ZOL saves costs and increases QALYs compared to placebo in French, German, and UK RCC patients with bone metastases. Additional prospective research may be needed to confirm these results in a larger sample of patients.

Antinucleosome antibodies as a potential biomarker for the evaluation of renal pathological activity in patients with proliferative lupus nephritis

The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation between antinucleosome antibodies and renal pathological activity in patients with proliferative lupus nephritis (LN). We evaluated 36 patients with proliferative LN, 14 non-renal lupus patients and 10 healthy volunteers. Lupus activity was assessed using the British Isles Lupus Assessment Group 2004 (BILAG 2004) index, serum anti-double stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) levels, serum complement levels and daily urinary protein levels. All 36 lupus nephritis patients received renal biopsy. Antinucleosome antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Our results showed that levels of serum antinucleosome antibodies were significantly higher in LN patients (median 90.35 units/ml, interquartile range [IQR] 37.38–135.23) than in non-renal SLE patients (median 5.45 units/ml, IQR 2.6–28.93, p <0.05) and in healthy volunteers (median 3.35 units/ml, IQR 2.95–5.23, p <0.001). Serum levels of antinucleosome antibodies were positively correlated with BILAG index (Spearman’s r = 0.645, p <0.001) and serum anti-dsDNA antibody levels ( rs = 0.644, p <0.01), while serum levels of antinucleosome antibodies were negatively correlated with serum levels of C3 ( rs = -0.400, p <0.01) and C4 ( rs = -0.300, p <0.05). Serum levels of antinucleosome antibodies were positively correlated with the histological activity index of LN ( rs = 0.368, p <0.05). However, there was no significant correlation between serum levels of antinucleosome antibodies and the histological chronicity index. In conclusion, the serum level of antinucleosome antibodies is a potential biomarker for early recognition of renal involvement and evaluation of disease activity in SLE. Our preliminary results suggested that serum levels of antinucleosome antibodies might be a potential biomarker in evaluating pathological activity of LN.

Preparation and characterization of iridium dioxide-carbon nanotube nanocomposites for supercapacitors

A thin film of novel hierarchical structure, suitable for supercapacitor applications, has been developed through combining conductive multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and square IrO(2) nanotubes (IrO(2)NT) of nanometer size. Synthesis of this hierarchical structure with open porosity is performed by depositing IrO(2) short tubes densely along the long wires of carbon nanotube on a substrate of stainless steel. A IrO(2) tube of rutile structure grows in the [001] direction, with an opening at its top, surrounded by very thin walls. The IrO(2) addition on the MWCNT template increases the capacitance of the CNT thin film effectively, because of pseudocapacitance of the IrO(2) surface. For this particular composite, featured with two tubular nanostructures, the specific capacitance increases from 15 F g(-1) (MWCNT) to 69 F g(-1) (IrO(2)NT/MWCNT), measured using the galvanostatic discharge experiment. Its property of fast retrieval of the stored charge is assured in the impedance measurement, showing that the internal resistance of the IrO(2)NT/MWCNT nanocomposite electrode is lower than that of the bare MWCNTs.

Heat shock proteins of higher plants

The pattern of protein synthesis changes rapidly and dramatically when the growth temperature of soybean seedling tissue is increased from 28 degrees C (normal) to about 40 degrees C (heat shock). The synthesis of normal proteins is greatly decreased and a new set of proteins, "heat shock proteins," is induced. The heat shock proteins of soybean consist of 10 new bands on one-dimensional NaDodSO(4) gels; a more complex pattern is observed on two-dimensional gels. When the tissue is returned to 28 degrees C after 4 hr at 40 degrees C, there is progressive decline in the synthesis of heat shock proteins and reappearance of a normal pattern of synthesis by 3 or 4 hr. In vitro translation of poly(A)(+)RNAs isolated from tissues grown at 28 and 40 degrees C shows that the heat shock proteins are translated from a new set of mRNAs induced at 40 degrees C; furthermore, the abundant class mRNAs for many of the normal proteins persist even though they are translated weakly (or not at all) in vivo at 40 or 42.5 degrees C. The heat shock response in soybean appears similar to the much-studied heat shock phenomenon in Drosophila.

Characterization and enhanced field emission properties of IrO2-coated carbon nanotube bundle arrays

Low operating electric field and stable emission current have been achieved in IrO(2) nanocrystal-coated carbon nanotube bundle arrays (CNTBAs). Patterned vertically aligned CNTBAs were synthesized using thermal chemical vapor deposition followed by the deposition of IrO(2) nanocrystals by reactive radio-frequency magnetron sputtering using an Ir target. The structural and spectroscopic properties were characterized by field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The current density versus electric field measurements yielded a low turn-on field of 0.7 V microm(-1) at a current density of 0.1 microA cm(-2), a low threshold field of 2.3 V microm(-1) at a current density of 1 mA cm(-2) and a high field enhancement factor of 1 x 10(4) for the IrO(2)-coated CNTBAs. Long-term stability was also demonstrated. The enhancement of field emission characteristics is attributed to the combined effects of the geometrical structure of the IrO(2)-coated CNTBAs, and the natural conducting and enhanced resistance to oxidation properties of IrO(2).

Antifouling properties of tough gels against barnacles in a long-term marine environment experiment

In the marine environment, the antifouling (AF) properties of various kinds of hydrogels against sessile marine organisms (algae, sea squirts, barnacles) were tested in a long-term experiment. The results demonstrate that most hydrogels can endure at least 2 months in the marine environment. In particular, mechanically tough PAMPS/PAAm DN and PVA gels exhibited AF activity against marine sessile organisms, especially barnacles, for as long as 330 days. The AF ability of hydrogels toward barnacles is explained in terms of an 'easy-release' mechanism in which the high water content and the elastic modulus of the gel are two important parameters.

Public perceptions of the factors that constitute a good healthcare system

INTRODUCTION

In Singapore, few studies have been done on the factors that the general public considers to be most important in the healthcare system. We conducted this pilot study to determine the factor structure, reliability and validity of statements in a healthcare survey questionnaire as predictors of public perception of a good healthcare system.

METHODS

Data on public perceptions of healthcare from a national survey of 1,434 adult Singaporeans was analysed using a principal component analysis and regression, to obtain the factors and predictors. The survey employed 31 statements on healthcare quality, cost, access and the role of the individual vis-à-vis society, which participants ranked on a five-point Likert scale.

RESULTS

The exploratory factor analysis identified six critical factors (F): National healthcare financing framework (F1), Service at public institutions (F2), Service at private institutions (F3), Individual responsibility for health (F4), Affordability at public institutions (F5), and Affordability at private institutions (F6). These factors explained 54 percent of variance, and Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.5 to 0.72, except for F1. Regression analysis showed an association of public perception of good healthcare in Singapore with the following factors: F2 (odds ratio [OR] 1.79, 95 percent confidence interval [CI] 1.48-2.16, p-value is less than 0.0001); F3 (OR 1.29, 95 percent CI 1.10-1.52, p-value is less than 0.0001); F5 (OR 1.52, 95 percent CI 1.27-1.83, p-value is less than 0.0001); F1 (OR 1.31, 95 percent CI 1.08-1.59, p-value is 0.01); F4 (OR 1.33, 95 percent CI 1.16-1.54, p-value is less than 0.0001); but not with F6.

CONCLUSION

This pilot study provides a practical, reliable and valid first perception second level matrix to assess the Singapore healthcare system. Further snapshot surveys to assess perceptions of the healthcare system should be conducted with questionnaires abridged to include only these five identified critical factors.

Association of interleukin-18 promoter polymorphisms with WHO pathological classes and serum IL-18 levels in Chinese patients with lupus nephritis

Accumulating evidence indicates that interleukin (IL)-18 has a central role in the pathogenesis of lupus nephritis (LN). Although two recent studies showed that IL-18 promoter gene polymorphisms might be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), to our knowledge, there have not been any reports concerning their association with LN. The aim of our study was to investigate the association of IL-18 promoter polymorphisms with World Health Organization pathological classes and identify their functional correlations. Sequence-specific primer polymerase chain reaction and the restriction fragment length polymorphism method were used to analyse the genotypes of IL-18 promoter polymorphism at the position −607 in 101 unrelated patients with LN, 64 non-renal patients with SLE and 174 ethnically matched healthy controls. Serum IL-18 levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay during the active phase. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed for IL-18 expression on renal biopsies from 72 patients with LN. Our results showed that patients with non-renal SLE had significantly higher frequencies of SNP−607/AA when compared to patients with LN (37.5% vs 18.8%, P < 0.05). LN patients with the AA genotype had significantly lower levels of serum IL-18 than those with the CA or CC genotype ( P < 0.01) and also had lower levels of glomerular IL-18 expression than those with the CC genotype ( P < 0.05). Significantly, higher frequencies of the SNP−607/AA genotype were observed in LN patients with WHO class III than in those with class IV (34.6% vs 15.6%, P < 0.05). The SNP−607/AA genotype was not observed in patients with LN who progressed to end-stage renal failure that required haemodialysis or renal transplantation. In conclusion, the SNP−607/AA genotype that had lower IL-18 levels might be a genetically protective factor against renal involvement in Chinese patients with SLE and against development of severe nephritis in patients with LN.

Aging and compressibility of municipal solid wastes

The expansion of a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill requires the ability to predict settlement behavior of the existing landfill. The practice of using a single compressibility value when performing a settlement analysis may lead to inaccurate predictions. This paper gives consideration to changes in the mechanical compressibility of MSW as a function of the fill age of MSW as well as the embedding depth of MSW. Borehole samples representative of various fill ages were obtained from five boreholes drilled to the bottom of the Qizhishan landfill in Suzhou, China. Thirty-one borehole samples were used to perform confined compression tests. Waste composition and volume-mass properties (i.e., unit weight, void ratio, and water content) were measured on all the samples. The test results showed that the compressible components of the MSW (i.e., organics, plastics, paper, wood and textiles) decreased with an increase in the fill age. The in situ void ratio of the MSW was shown to decrease with depth into the landfill. The compression index, Cc, was observed to decrease from 1.0 to 0.3 with depth into the landfill. Settlement analyses were performed on the existing landfill, demonstrating that the variation of MSW compressibility with fill age or depth should be taken into account in the settlement prediction.

Growth and characterization of V-shaped IrO(2) nanowedges via metal-organic vapor deposition

We report in detail the synthesis and characterization of V-shaped IrO(2) nanowedges (NWs) with an angle of 110° between the two arms. The NWs were grown on top of rutile (R) phase TiO(2) nanorods (NRs) sitting on a sapphire (SA)(100) substrate via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) by using (C(6)H(7))(C(8)H(12))Ir and titanium-tetraisopropoxide (TTIP, Ti[OCH(CH(3))(2)](4)) as the source reagents. The surface morphology, structural, and spectroscopic properties of the as-deposited nanocrystals (NCs) were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and selected-area electron diffractometry (SAED). The FESEM images and XRD patterns indicated growth of V-shaped IrO(2)(101) NWs on top of R-TiO(2) NRs. The Raman spectrum showed the nanosize induced redshift and peak broadening of the IrO(2) and rutile phase of TiO(2) signatures with respect to that of the bulk counterparts. TEM and SAED characterizations of IrO(2) NCs showed that the nanowedges were crystalline IrO(2) with a twin plane of (101) and twin direction of [Formula: see text] at the V-junction. The probable mechanisms for the formation of well-aligned IrO(2) NWs are discussed.

Absence of flexor digitorum superficialis tendon in the little finger is not associated with decreased grip strength

We examined the little finger in 402 normal subjects for the presence or absence of the flexor digitorum superficialis. All subjects also had their grip strength measured. No statistically significant difference was seen in the grip strength measurements between subjects who had a flexor digitorum superficialis tendon to the little finger and those who did not. This study demonstrates that absence of the flexor digitorum superficialis to the little finger is not associated with decreased grip strength. The implications of this in terms of repair of the flexor digitorum superficialis of the little finger are considered.

Growth and characterization of well-aligned densely-packed rutile TiO(2) nanocrystals on sapphire substrates via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition

Well-aligned densely-packed rutile TiO(2) nanocrystals (NCs) have been grown on sapphire (SA) (100) and (012) substrates via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), using titanium-tetraisopropoxide (TTIP, Ti(OC(3)H(7))(4)) as a source reagent. The surface morphology as well as structural and spectroscopic properties of the as-deposited NCs were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area electron diffractometry (SAED), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. FESEM micrographs reveal that vertically aligned NCs were grown on SA(100), whereas the NCs on the SA(012) were grown with a tilt angle of ∼33° from the normal to substrates. TEM and SAED measurements showed that the TiO(2) NCs on SA(100) with square cross section have their long axis directed along the [001] direction. The XRD results reveal TiO(2) NCs with either (002) orientation on SA(100) substrate or (101) orientation on SA(012) substrate. A strong substrate effect on the alignment of the growth of TiO(2) NCs has been demonstrated and the probable mechanism for the formation of these NCs has been discussed.

Effects of morphine and its withdrawal on Y-maze spatial recognition memory in mice

Effects of morphine on acquisition and retrieval of memory have been proven in the avoidance paradigms. In present study, we used a two-trial recognition Y-maze to test the effects of acute morphine and morphine withdrawal on spatial recognition memory. The Y-maze is based on the innate tendency of rodents to explore novel environments and therefore avoid punishment and reward.

RESULTS

1) Pre-training morphine 10 mg/kg impaired the recognition spatial memory of acquisition after a 1 h inter-trial interval (ITI), whereas morphine 2.5, 5 and 10 mg/kg showed impairment after 2 h ITI. 2) Pre-retention morphine 5, 10 mg/kg disrupted the retrieval of memory after 1 h ITI. 3) Morphine 5 and 10 mg/kg caused hyper-locomotor activity depending on the state. 4) Mice withdrawn from morphine 40 mg/kg but not 10 mg/kg for 3 days showed amnesia in Y-maze. Our data suggested that acute morphine impaired the acquisition and retrieval of spatial recognition memory and increased the locomotor activity in the Y-maze depending on the dose and state. Moreover, withdrawal from chronic morphine also impaired acquisition in the Y-maze depending on the dose and state.

Vasculitis-related Wunderlich’s syndrome treated without surgical intervention

Spontaneous renal or peri-renal bleeding or so-called Wunderlich's syndrome is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition. Most reported cases are Caucasian and caused by ruptured renal tumors, either benign or malignant. The syndrome has never been documented in Orientals with underlying autoimmune diseases. We report 3 cases of spontaneous renal bleeding with concurrent systemic lupus erythematosus and vasculitis presenting with flank or abdominal pain, anemia, leukocytosis, and a high C-reactive protein. All were diagnosed by computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging or angiography, and treated successfully with glucocorticoids and cytotoxic agents without surgical intervention.
