Abstract
Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can be used to non-invasively entrain neural activity, and thereby cause changes in local neural oscillatory power. Despite an increased use in cognitive and clinical neuroscience, the fundamental mechanisms of tACS are still not fully understood. Here, we develop a computational neuronal network model of two-compartment pyramidal neurons and inhibitory interneurons which mimic the local cortical circuits. We model tACS with electric field strengths that are achievable in human applications. We then simulate intrinsic network activity and measure neural entrainment to investigate how tACS modulates ongoing endogenous oscillations. First, we show that intensity-specific effects of tACS are non-linear. At low intensities (<0.3 mV/mm), tACS desynchronizes neural firing relative to the endogenous oscillations. At higher intensities (>0.3 mV/mm), neurons are entrained to the exogenous electric field. We then further explore the stimulation parameter space and find that entrainment of ongoing cortical oscillations also depends on frequency by following an Arnold tongue. Moreover, neuronal networks can amplify the tACS induced entrainment via excitation-inhibition balance. Our model shows that pyramidal neurons are directly entrained by the exogenous electric field and drive the inhibitory neurons. Our findings can thus provide a mechanistic framework for understanding the intensity- and frequency- specific effects of oscillating electric fields on neuronal networks. This is crucial for rational parameters selection for tACS in cognitive studies and clinical applications.

Abstract
The combination of photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation is considered effective in treating organic pollutants in water; however, the photocatalysts currently used to activate PMS are primarily in powder form, which cause secondary contamination because they are difficult to recycle. In this study, copper-ion-chelated polydopamine/titanium dioxide (Cu-PDA/TiO2) nanofilm were prepared for PMS activation on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrates using hydrothermal and in-situ self-polymerization methods. The results showed that Cu-PDA/TiO2 + PMS + Vis degraded 94.8% of gatifloxacin (GAT) within 60 min, and the reaction rate constant reached 4.928 × 10-2 min-1, which was 6.25 and 4.04 folds higher than that of TiO2 + PMS + Vis (0.789 × 10-2 min-1) and PDA/TiO2 + PMS + Vis (1.219 × 10-2 min-1), respectively. The Cu-PDA/TiO2 nanofilm is easily recyclable and activates PMS to degrade GAT with no inferior performance, unlike the powder-based photocatalysts, and simultaneously maintains outstanding stability, which is highly suitable for applications in real aqueous environments. Biotoxicity experiments were conducted using E. coli, S. aureus, and mung bean sprouts as experimental subjects, and the results showed that the Cu-PDA/TiO2 + PMS + Vis system had excellent detoxification ability. In addition, a detailed investigation of the formation mechanism of step-scheme (S-scheme) Cu-PDA/TiO2 nanofilm heterojunctions was conducted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, a specific process for activating PMS to degrade GAT was proposed, which provides a novel photocatalysts for practical applications in aqueous pollution.

Abstract
The proton is one of the main building blocks of all visible matter in the Universe1. Among its intrinsic properties are its electric charge, mass and spin2. These properties emerge from the complex dynamics of its fundamental constituents-quarks and gluons-described by the theory of quantum chromodynamics3-5. The electric charge and spin of protons, which are shared among the quarks, have been investigated previously using electron scattering2. An example is the highly precise measurement of the electric charge radius of the proton6. By contrast, little is known about the inner mass density of the proton, which is dominated by the energy carried by gluons. Gluons are hard to access using electron scattering because they do not carry an electromagnetic charge. Here we investigated the gravitational density of gluons using a small colour dipole, through the threshold photoproduction of the J/ψ particle. We determined the gluonic gravitational form factors of the proton7,8 from our measurement. We used a variety of models9-11 and determined, in all cases, a mass radius that is notably smaller than the electric charge radius. In some, but not all cases, depending on the model, the determined radius agrees well with first-principle predictions from lattice quantum chromodynamics12. This work paves the way for a deeper understanding of the salient role of gluons in providing gravitational mass to visible matter.

Abstract
Abnormal stress loading has been considered a major contributor to the initiation of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA), but studies to date have not identified a functional molecule that transforms physical stress into biological or biochemical signaling in chondrocytes in response to excessive mechanical stress. Ras-related protein Rap-2a (RAP2A) is reportedly a molecular switch that relays extracellular matrix rigidity signals via the Hippo/Yes-associated protein (YAP) pathway. In the present study, RAP2A diminished with cartilage degradation in unilateral anterior crossbite-induced TMJOA mice, as well as severe cartilage matrix degeneration and TMJOA formation in Cre-loxP-mediated conditional RAP2A knockout mice. RAP2A in chondrocytes regulated the Hippo/YAP pathway directly in response to matrix stiffness, and RAP2A/Hippo/YAP was critical for a chondrocyte phenotype switch and matrix synthesis function. Loss of RAP2A impaired cartilage homeostasis and altered chondrocyte phenotype via Hippo/YAP/SRY-box transcription factor 9 signaling. It may be possible to generate therapeutic strategies using RAP2A or YAP to attenuate the TMJOA pathological process at an early stage. This is the first study to reveal the molecular function of RAP2A in TMJOA progression as a mechanotransduction molecule in condylar chondrocytes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Up to a quarter of inpatients in high-income countries (HICs) self-report beta-lactam allergy (BLA), which if incorrect,increases the use of alternative antibiotics, worsening individual health outcomes and driving bacterial resistance. In HICs, up to 95% ofself-reported BLAs are incorrect. The epidemiology of BLA in low- and middle-income African countries is unknown. OBJECTIVES To describe the epidemiology and de-labelling outcomes of self-reported BLA in hospitalised South African (SA) patients. METHODS Point-prevalence surveys were conducted at seven hospitals (adult, paediatric, government and privately funded, district andtertiary level) in Cape Town, SA, between April 2019 and June 2021. Ward prescription records and in-person interviews were conductedto identify and risk-stratify BLA patients using the validated PEN-FAST tool. De-labelling was attempted at the tertiary allergy clinic atGroote Schuur Hospital. RESULTS A total of 1 486 hospital inpatients were surveyed (1 166 adults and 320 children). Only 48 patients (3.2%) self-reported a BLA,with a higher rate in private than in government-funded hospitals (6.3% v. 2.8%; p=0.014). Using the PEN-FAST tool, only 10.4% (n=5/48)of self-reported BLA patients were classified as high risk for true penicillin hypersensitivity. Antibiotics were prescribed to 70.8% (n=34/48)of self-reported BLA patients, with 64.7% (n=22/34) receiving a beta-lactam. Despite three attempts to contact patients for de-labelling atthe allergy clinic, only 3/36 underwent in vivo testing, with no positive results, and 1 patient proceeded to a negative oral challenge. CONCLUSION Unlike HICs, self-reported BLA is low among inpatients in SA. The majority of those who self-reported BLA were low risk fortype 1 hypersensitivity, but outpatient de-labelling efforts were largely unsuccessful.

Abstract
AIMS We aimed to investigate the association between residential greenness and MetS in older Chinese adults. METHODS Longitudinal data on sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle were collected from the Shenzhen Healthy Ageing Research (SHARE) cohort. Greenness exposure was assessed through satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values in the 250-m, 500-m, and 1250-m radius around the residential address for each participant. MetS was defined by standard guidelines for the Chinese population. RESULTS A total of 49,893 older Chinese adults with a mean age of 70.96 (SD = 5.26) years were included in the study. In the fully adjusted models, participants who lived in the highest quartile of NDVI250-m, NDVI500-m, and NDVI1250-m had a 15% (odds ratio, OR = 0.85, 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.80-0.90), 12% (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.83-0.93), and 11% (OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.85-0.95) lower incidence of MetS, respectively, than those living in the lowest quartile (all p-trend < 0.01). Interactions and subgroup analyses showed that age, sex, smoking status, and drinking status were significant effect modifiers (p-interaction for all NDVI < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Residential greenness is associated with a lower risk of MetS in Chinese older adults, especially for young older adults, females, non-smokers, and non-drinkers.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine if contemporary 0.55 T MRI supports the use of contrast-optimal flip angles (FA) for simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) balanced SSFP (bSSFP) cardiac function assessment, which is impractical at conventional field strengths because of excessive SAR and/or banding artifacts. METHODS Blipped-CAIPI bSSFP was combined with spiral sampling for ventricular function assessment at 0.55 T. Cine movies with single band and SMS factors of 2 and 3 (SMS 2 and 3), and FA ranging from 60° to 160°, were acquired in seven healthy volunteers. Left ventricular blood and myocardial signal intensity (SI) normalized by background noise and blood-myocardium contrast were measured and compared across acquisition settings. RESULTS Myocardial SI was slightly higher in single band than in SMS and decreased with an increasing FA. Blood SI increased as the FA increased for single band, and increment was small for FA ≥120°. Blood SI for SMS 2 and 3 increased with an increasing FA up to ∼100°. Blood-myocardium contrast increased with an increasing FA for single band, peaked at FA = 160° (systole: 28.43, diastole: 29.15), attributed mainly to reduced myocardial SI when FA ≥120°. For SMS 2, contrast peaked at 120° (systole: 21.43, diastole: 19.85). For SMS 3, contrast peaked at 120° in systole (16.62) and 100° in diastole (19.04). CONCLUSIONS Contemporary 0.55 T MR scanners equipped with high-performance gradient systems allow the use of contrast-optimal FA for SMS accelerated bSSFP cine examinations without compromising image quality. The contrast-optimal FA was found to be 140° to 160° for single band and 100° to 120° for SMS 2 and 3.

Abstract
Introduction This study aimed to investigate the effects of smoking and CYP2C19 gene polymorphism on antiplatelet therapy to specify the most optimized and accurate antiplatelet therapy for different populations. Methods This study included 6,353 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). In total, 2,256 (35.5%) were smokers and 4,097 (64.5%) were non-smokers. Patients carrying a CYP2C19*2 or *3 allele were considered loss-of-function (LOF) allele carriers. The medical history of patients who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at Beijing Anzhen Hospital was recorded. The primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events (MACCE) during the 6-month follow-up period. A Cox regression model was used to assess the interactions between antiplatelet efficacy and CYP2C19 LOF allele carrier status, stratified by smoking status. Results Compared to clopidogrel plus aspirin, ticagrelor plus aspirin reduced the MACCE recurrence risk in non-smokers (carrier: 6.0 vs. 2.0%, hazard ratio 0.298, 95% confidence interval 0.204-0.635, P < 0.0001; non-carrier: 5.8 vs. 2.1%, hazard ratio 0.358, 95% confidence interval 0.189-0.678, P = 0.002), and not in smokers. Similar results were discovered regarding the recurrence rate for hospitalization for ischemic cardiac events in non-smokers. No apparent difference was discovered in the bleeding events in either group. There were no significant associations between antiplatelet medication and CYP2C19 LOF allele carrier status for the MACCE recurrence risk among smokers (P = 0.943, respectively) or non-smokers (P = 0.774, respectively). Conclusion In patients with CAD after PCI, ticagrelor plus aspirin lowered the MACCE recurrence risk in CYP2C19 LOF allele carriers and non-carriers compared with clopidogrel plus aspirin alone among non-smokers. The efficacy of antiplatelet therapy varies between CYP2C19 LOF allele carrier status. No significant interaction between CYP2C19 LOF allele carrier status and antiplatelet effectiveness was observed. However, caution should be used to interpret our results considering the many limitations of our investigation.

Abstract
Calcium modulates bone cell recruitment, differentiation, and function by binding to the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR). However, the function of CaSR induced by high extracellular calcium (Ca2+ e ) in the regulation of osteoclast formation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains unknown. Here, we used TNFα-transgenic (TNFTG ) RA mice and their wildtype (WT) littermates fed a normal or a rescue diet (high calcium, high phosphorus, and high lactose diet, termed rescue diet) to compare their joint bone phenotypes. In comparison to TNFTG mice fed the normal diet, articular bone volume and cartilage area are increased, whereas inflamed area, eroded surface, TRAP+ surface, and osteoclast-related genes expression are decreased in TNFTG mice fed the rescue diet. Besides, TNFTG mice fed the rescue diet were found to exhibit more CaSR+ area and less NFATc1+ /TRAP+ area. Furthermore, at normal Ca2+ e concentrations, osteoclast precursors (OCPs) from TNFTG mice formed more osteoclasts than OCPs from WT mice, but the number of osteoclasts gradually decreased when the Ca2+ e concentration increased. Meanwhile, the expression of CaSR increased responding to a high level of Ca2+ e , whereas the expression of NF-κB/NFATc1 signaling molecules decreased. At last, the knockdown of CaSR blocked the inhibition of osteoclast differentiation attributed to high Ca2+ e . Taken together, our findings indicate that high Ca2+ e inhibits osteoclast differentiation in RA mice partially through the CaSR/NF-κB/NFATc1 pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The incidence of osteoarthritis (OA) in menopausal women is significantly higher than in same-aged men. Investigating the role of subchondral osteoblasts in estrogen deficiency-induced OA may help elucidate the pathological mechanism, providing new insights for the diagnosis and treatment of menopausal OA. METHODS A classical ovariectomy-induced OA (OVX-OA) rat model was utilized to isolate primary articular chondrocytes and subchondral osteoblasts, which were identified and then cocultured in Transwell. The expression of chondrocyte anabolic and catabolic indicators was evaluated. The differentially expressed proteins in the conditioned medium (CM) of osteoblasts were identified by Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). Normal chondrocytes were treated with osteoblast CM, and then RNA sequencing was performed on the treated chondrocytes. KEGG was used to identify significant enrichment of signaling pathways, and Simple Western was used to verify the expression of related proteins in the signaling pathways. RESULTS Coculture of OVX-OA subchondral osteoblasts with chondrocytes significantly downregulated the expression of the anabolic indicators and upregulated the expression of the catabolic indicators in chondrocytes. 1,601 proteins were identified in both normal and OVX osteoblast culture supernatants. Protein-protein interaction network analysis revealed that Sparc was one of the hub proteins. The AMPK/Foxo3a signaling pathway of chondrocytes was downregulated by OVX-OA osteoblasts CM. AICAR, the AMPK agonist, partially reversed the catabolic effect of OVX-OA osteoblasts on chondrocytes. CONCLUSIONS Sparc secreted by OVX-OA subchondral osteoblasts can downregulate the AMPK/Foxo3a signaling pathway of chondrocytes, thereby promoting chondrocyte degeneration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the relationship between total bilirubin (TBil) and stroke risk in older patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). METHODS A total of 1,007 patients with OSAS without stroke history aged ≥ 60 years and with complete serum TBil records were enrolled in this study. The median follow-up was 42 months. Participants were divided into four groups based on the quartile of the baseline serum TBil concentration. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were used to investigate the association of TBil with the incidence of new-onset stroke. RESULTS The PRIMARY part: the third quantile TBil level group had the lowest prevalence of stroke among the four groups. The RCS functions depicted a J-type curve relationship between TBil (3.3-33.3 µmol/L) and stroke (nonlinear P < 0.05). When the TBil level was in the range of 3.3 to 11.5 µmol/L, the possible protective influence of bilirubin against stroke in patients with OSAS enhanced with an increasing TBil level. However, when the TBil level exceeded 11.5 µmol/L and gradually increased, the effect of TBil on stroke risk became more and more pronounced. The SECONDARY part: for every 1 µmol/L increase in TBil levels in the range of 11.5 to 33.3 µmol/L, the risk of stroke in patients with OSAS increased by 16.2% (P < 0.001). In addition, there was a higher risk in women with OSAS (hazard ratio (HR)=1.292, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.093-1.528; P = 0.003). Moreover, an increased TBil level alone was significantly associated with stroke in subjects aged < 75 years (HR: 1.190, 95%CI: 1.069-1.324), patients with mild-to-moderate OSAS (HR: 1.215, 95%CI: 1.083-1.364), and individuals without atrial fibrillation (AF) (HR: 1.179, 95%CI: 1.083-1.285) within a TBil level in the range of 11.5 to 33.3 µmol/L. CONCLUSIONS Both lower and higher bilirubin levels may increase the risk of stroke in older persons with OSAS, and there was a J-type dose-response relationship. The risk of stroke was lowest when the TBil level was approximately 11.5 µmol/L.

Abstract
Previous studies have revealed that there existed epidemic associations between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and many types of tumors, however, the inner biological mechanism connecting these diseases was not clear currently. In this study, we explored the transcriptome associations between AD and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) that both originate in the brain, using microglia as a bridge, from gene and network levels. Firstly, we extracted human scRNA sequencing datasets from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, and identified differentially expressed genes within microglia after cell annotation. It was observed that there were 11 common genes shared by AD and GBM dys-regulated genes. Next, we utilized DIAMOnD and Flow Centrality algorithms to identify microglia modules and mediating pathways connecting these two diseases based on global network topology. Among these candidate pathways, the mediating genes FURIN and BACE1 (from SPIKN5 to CSNK1A1) were not only related to the formation of amyloid beta plaques that accumulate in the brain of AD patients, but also involved in cancer biology. Furthermore, the biological explorations of mediating pathways connecting AD and GBM modules reveal inflammatory response, lipid metabolism disorder, and cell proliferation terms. Finally, novel signatures for early AD detection as well as risk models for glioma prognosis were identified based on mediating genes involved in these pathways. In conclusion, this study provided a novel network-based strategy for exploring microglia mediation between AD and GBM and identified candidate signatures for disease detection and prognosis.

Abstract
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), as a subtype of breast tumors with aggressive nature, threatens the health of females across the globe. It's urgent to explore novel therapeutic targets for the improvement of TNBC treatments. Bioinformatics was used to identify circular RNA (circRNA) differentially expressed in TNBC tissues. The circular structure and expression in TNBC cells was subjected to analysis of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and PCR-agarose gel electrophoresis. Functional experiments and qPCR assays were carried out to probe the biological functions of circ_0008784 and microRNA-506-3p (miR-506-3p). It was verified by the assays that circ_0008784 propels proliferation and inhibit apoptosis of TNBC cells; and miR-506-3p was found to suppress proliferation and facilitate apoptosis of TNBC cells. TOP/FOP-Flash reporter, luciferase reporter, RNA-binding protein immunoprecipitation (RIP), RNA pulldown and rescue assays were implemented for exploring the underlying mechanisms of circ_0008784. It was found that circ_0008784 regulates Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, and augments TNBC cell progression via sponging miR-506-3p to modulate catenin beta 1 (CTNNB1). Circ_0008784 activates Wnt/β-catenin pathway to affect the proliferation and apoptosis of TNBC cells. Elucidating the mechanism of circ_0008784 underlying TNBC is of great significance to TNBC treatment.

Abstract
Introduction: Chronic stress exposure is the main environmental factor leading to cognitive impairment, but the detailed molecular mechanism is still unclear. Adenosine Deaminase acting on double-stranded RNA1(ADAR1) is involved in the occurrence of chronic stress-induced cognitive impairment. In addition, dopamine and Adenosine 3'5'-monophosphate-regulated phospho-protein (DARPP-32) gene variation affects cognitive function. Therefore, we hypothesized that ADAR1 plays a key role in chronic stress-induced cognitive impairment by acting on DARPP-32. Methods: In this study, postnatal 21-day-old male BALB/c mice were exposed to chronic unpredictable stressors. After that, the mice were treated with ADAR1 inducer/inhibitor. The cognitive ability and cerebral DARPP-32 protein expression of BALB/c mice were evaluated. In order to explore the link between ADAR1 and DARPP-32, the effects of ADAR1 high/low expression on DARPP-32 protein expression in vitro were detected. Results: ADAR1 inducer alleviates cognitive impairment and recovers decreased DARPP-32 protein expression of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in BALB/c mice with chronic unpredictable stress exposure. In vivo and in vitro studies confirm the results predicted by bio-informatics; that is, ADAR1 affects DARPP-32 expression via miR-874-3p. Discussion: The results in this study demonstrate that ADAR1 affects the expression of DARPP-32 via miR-874-3p, which is involved in the molecular mechanism of pathogenesis in chronic unpredictable stress-induced cognitive impairment. The new findings of this study provide a new therapeutic strategy for the prevention and treatment of stress cognitive impairment from epigenetics.

Abstract
CONSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENIC DWARF (CPD), member of the CYP90A family of cytochrome P450 (CYP450) monooxygenase, is an essential component of brassinosteroids (BRs) biosynthesis pathway. Compared with a single CPD/CYP90A1 in Arabidopsis thaliana, two highly homologous CPD genes, OsCPD1/CYP90A3 and OsCPD2/CYP90A4, are present in rice genome. There is still no genetic evidence so far about the requirement of OsCPD1 and OsCPD2 in rice BR biosynthesis. In this study, we reported the functional characterization of OsCPD genes using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology. The overall growth and development of oscpd1 and oscpd2 single knock-out mutants was indistinguishable from the wild-type, whereas, the oscpd1 oscpd2 double mutant displayed multiple and obvious BR-related defects. Cytological analyses further indicated the defective cell elongation in oscpd1 oscpd2 double mutant. The oscpd double mutants had a lower endogenous BR level and could be restored by the application of the brassinolide (BL). Moreover, overexpression of OsCPD1 and OsCPD2 led to a typical BR enhanced phenotype, with enlarged leaf angle and increased grain size. Taken together, our results provide direct genetic evidence that OsCPD1 and OsCPD2 play essential and redundant roles in maintenance of plant architecture by modulating BR biosynthesis in rice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies on residential green space were inconsistent with blood lipid levels and hyperlipidemia. Thus, our study aims to explore the relationship between urban residential greenness and the blood lipid level and hyperlipidemia of the Chinese elderly population. METHODS A total of 59,865 older adults were collected from the Shenzhen healthy aging Research (SHARE). Blood lipid levels [total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)] were measured. Participants' exposure to residential greenness was measured by the satellite-based normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and logistic regression were performed to assess the associations of residential greenness with lipid levels and dyslipidemia (high TG, high TC, low HDL-C, and high LDL-C). RESULTS Each per 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in NDVI250-m was associated with a higher HDL-C level (β = 0.003, 95% (confidence interval, CI):0.001-0.005) and lower TG level (β = - 0.005, 95% CI - 0.141-0.121), after fully adjusting for covariates. Each increment in per interquartile range (IQR)-unit increase in NDVI250-m was associated with lower odds of high TG (odds ratio, OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.91-0.97) and low HDL-C (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.94-0.99). The NDVI250-m has the highest protective effect on the incidence of high TG and low HDL-C, followed by NDVI500-m and NDVI1250-m. Stratified analyses showed that association between residential greenness and hyperlipidemia was modified by sex, age, BMI, household registration, and physical activity. CONCLUSION Higher greenness exposure was beneficially associated with lipid levels and dyslipidemia among Chinese city-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
Micro-expression is a fleeting facial expression of emotion that usually occurs in high-stake situations and reveals the true emotion that a person tries to conceal. Due to its unique nature, recognizing micro-expression has great applications for fields like law enforcement, medical treatment, and national security. However, the psychological mechanism of micro-expression recognition is still poorly understood. In the present research, we sought to expand upon previous research to investigate whether the group membership of the expresser influences the recognition process of micro-expressions. By conducting two behavioral studies, we found that contrary to the widespread ingroup advantage found in macro-expression recognition, there was a robust ingroup disadvantage in micro-expression recognition instead. Specifically, in Study 1A and 1B, we found that participants were more accurate at recognizing the intense and subtle micro-expressions of their racial outgroups than those micro-expressions of their racial ingroups, and neither the training experience nor the duration of micro-expressions moderated this ingroup disadvantage. In Study 2A and 2B, we further found that mere social categorization alone was sufficient to elicit the ingroup disadvantage for the recognition of intense and subtle micro-expressions, and such an effect was also unaffected by the duration of micro-expressions. These results suggest that individuals spontaneously employ the social category information of others to recognize micro-expressions, and the ingroup disadvantage in micro-expression stems partly from motivated differential processing of ingroup micro-expressions.
