Research on the driving path of carbon inclusive system to green behavior of the public: based on procedural grounded theory and multiple intermediary model

As an emerging carbon emission reduction mechanism, the carbon inclusive system (CIS) develops an important effect in promoting public green behavior and has been piloted in some provinces and cities in China. Under this background, this paper deeply analyzes the public's attitude towards CIS and its influencing factors based on the grounded theory and 1120 questionnaires, and comprehensively discusses the action path of CIS on public green behavior by using multiple regression model, bootstrap method, and placebo test. The results show that CIS can promote the public to implement green behavior, and system operation, internal psychology, and government behavior are important factors that affect the incentive effect of CIS. Among them, incentive effect and green willingness play multiple intermediary and chain intermediary roles in the path of CIS on green behaviors. Further heterogeneity analysis shows that the influence path of CIS on green behavior is different among diverse gender groups, incentive choice preference groups, and family types. This study has reference value for improving the design of CIS and constructing diversified incentive mechanism of CIS.

Investigating tourism experiences and attention allocation of outbound tourists through the lens of the two-factor theory: A grounded theory analysis of Chinese tourists' travelogues in Malaysia

A top-notch travel experience is vital for boosting a destination's competitiveness. Outbound travel notes of online travel agency capture tourists' experiences and emotions during their journeys, providing valuable insights for understanding tourist consumption behavior and improving tourism service policies. This study analyzes 1,012 travel blogs of Chinese tourists visiting Malaysia using grounded theory methodology. A dual-factor theoretical model is developed through open coding, spindle coding, and selective coding, illustrating the attention allocation problem of outbound tourists in their travel experiences. The study's hygiene factors comprise basic features, management aspects, and transportation components, while motivational factors include cultural elements, resource considerations, emotional factors, media influences, and commercial aspects. Research findings indicate that outbound tourists prioritize motivational factors, such as interpersonal service attributes and inherent emotional components. These factors play a crucial role in stimulating travel motivation and crafting memorable experiences. Moreover, hygiene factors, like infrastructure and security conditions, also impact tourists' experiences and are crucial for reducing dissatisfaction among outbound travelers. These results provide fresh perspectives on the factors influencing outbound tourists' experiences and their focal points during trips. The findings have significant implications for public sectors and industry professionals in tourism. By addressing the motivating and hygiene factors important to outbound tourists, they can enhance and fine-tune tourism service policies, ultimately increasing destination competitiveness. Measures such as improving infrastructure, raising service quality, and amplifying cultural experiences at the destination can all contribute to better travel experiences for tourists.

Measuring the decent work of knowledge workers: Constructing and validating a new scale

Through two and half decades, decent work (DW) has been studied mainly on unemployment and underemployment to promote workers' well-being, overlooking the importance of understanding knowledge of workers' (KW's) well-being in the workplace. However, the conflict between organizational performance and KW's well-being has intensified with technology development and the digital economy. This study constructs and validates a new scale for measuring the decent work perception (DWP) of KW in the context of knowledge management (KM). First, 27 in-depth interviews are conducted based on previous research results and grounded theory, resulting 4 dimensions consisting of 32 initial items identified by the KWs as reflecting their perception of DW. The 4dimensions of DWP are work security, respect & support, self-value, and professional skills. Second, 212 KWs participate in the preliminary survey, identifying the initial questionnaire's validity and selecting 13 items from the original questionnaire. Finally, 554 questionnaires are collected for the formal survey. According to exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmative factor analysis (CFA), the 13-item decent work perception scale (DWPS) has reasonable reliability and validity. Considering the characteristics of work challenges, work autonomy, and career commitment of KWs, this study contributes to the knowledge of respect & support, self-value, and professional skills on DWPS. It is concluded that the DWPS can be applied to measure DW for KWs. As an effective measurement tool for KWs, this scale is also crucial for helping employees achieve their career goals, and managers understand KWs' demands theoretically and practically.

Survival protection of patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: grounded theory

PURPOSE

For patients with blood malignancies, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a significant challenge. These patients have hope to be completely cured after the transplantation, but deal with the dread of dying at the same time. This study presents a deep understanding of the psychological process of the treatment including perception, emotion, interactions, and its consequences in patients undergoing HSCT.

METHODS

This study utilized a qualitative method based on the Strauss and Corbin Approach toward the grounded theory. The research population comprised all patients undergoing HSTC in Taleghani Hospital (Tehran, Iran) who were able to communicate effectively. The data were collected through deep and unstructured interviews with consenting patients. The sampling started with a purposive method and continued until the theoretical saturation was met. The 17 participants were interviewed individually and the data were analyzed via Strauss and Corbin Approach (2015).

RESULTS

According to the findings of the present study, the threat to survival was the main concern of patients during the transplant process. The patients tried to cope with the threat to survival through strategies that were conceptualized as survival protection. These strategies led to the consequences such as debris removal and fondness for life, through which the patients rebuilt themselves, while on the alert for transplant rejection.

CONCLUSION

The results suggested that dealing with HSCT affects personal and social aspects of a patient's life. This means, taking measures to facilitate psychological affairs and financial expenses, increasing the nursing manpower, and helping patients to reduce tension play a vital role to improve their fighting spirit.

Family functioning of families experiencing intensive care and the specific impact of the COVID-19 pandemic: A grounded theory study

OBJECTIVES

In order to provide a deeper understanding of family functioning, the aim of this study was to identify, describe and conceptualise the family functioning of families where a formerly critically ill family member had stayed at the intensive care unit, with the impact of a pandemic.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY/DESIGN

The study has a grounded theory design including interviews with eight families.

SETTING

Former adult intensive care patients cared for Covid-19 infection and their family. Eight patients and twelve family members from three different intensive care units.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

The results presented are grounded in data and identified in the core category "Existential issues" and the categories "Value considerateness; Anxiety and insecurity in life; Insight into the unpredictability of life."

FINDINGS

The core category could be found in all data and its relationship and impact on the categories and each other. The core is a theoretical construction, whereas the family functioning of families where a formerly critically ill family member had stayed at the intensive care unit was identified, described, and conceptualised. Being able to talk repeatedly about existential issues and the anxiety and insecurity in life, with people that have similar experiences helps the patient and their family to consider and gain insight into the unpredictability of life, and thereby better cope with changes in life.

CONCLUSION

There is awareness about the love that exists within the family. A willing to supporting each other in the family even if the critical illness made the family anxious and afraid.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE

Even if the pandemic Covid-19 led to restrictions inhibiting family focused nursing, it is important to confirm the family as a part of the caring of the ICU patient. The patients are not alone, their family are fighting together for the future.

Caregiver accounts of unintentional childhood injury events in rural Uganda

OBJECTIVE

Complex environmental, social, and individual factors contribute to unintentional childhood injury events. Understanding context-specific antecedents and caregiver attributions of childhood injury events can inform the development of locally-targeted interventions to reduce injury risk in rural Uganda.

METHODS

Fifty-six Ugandan caregivers were recruited through primary schools and completed qualitative interviews regarding 86 unintentional childhood injury events. Descriptive statistics summarized injury characteristics, child location and activity, and supervision at time of injury. Qualitative analyses informed by grounded theory identified caregiver attributions of injury causes and caregiver actions to reduce injury risk.

RESULTS

Cuts, falls, and burns were the most common injuries reported. At the time of injury, the most common child activities were farming and playing and the most common child locations were the farm and kitchen. Most children were unsupervised. In cases where supervision was provided, the supervisor was typically distracted. Caregivers most often attributed injuries to child risk-taking but also identified social, environmental, and chance factors. Caregivers most often made efforts to reduce injury risk by teaching children safety rules, but also reported efforts to improve supervision, remove hazards, and implement environmental safeguards.

CONCLUSION

Unintentional childhood injuries have a significant impact on injured children and their families, and caregivers are motivated to reduce child injury risk. Caregivers frequently perceive child decision-making a primary factor in injury events and respond by teaching children safety rules. Rural communities in Uganda and elsewhere may face unique hazards associated with agricultural labor, contributing to a high risk of cuts. Interventions to support caregiver efforts to reduce child injury risk are warranted.

Qualitative analysis of social support for caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental disorders in South India

BACKGROUND

Despite its importance, limited formal social supports are available for caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) navigating rehabilitation and caregiving in low-resource contexts. The current study investigates the social support sources and coping processes of caregivers of children with NDD at a rural rehabilitation center in South India. An emphasis is placed on interactions between the study participants and families of other children with NDD receiving services at the center.

METHODS AND PROCEDURE

A constructivist grounded theory methodology was adopted. Data analysis was based on data obtained from twenty-two parents obtaining rehabilitation services in the center over two phases.

OUTCOMES AND RESULTS

Constant comparative analysis of caregivers' perceptions and experiences generated a theoretical framework of the long-term emergence of social support and coping, comprising three subcategories: accessing service, gaining acceptance and experiencing support at a grassroots level, and coping at a grassroots level.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

Findings illustrate the need for and benefit of supporting caregivers of children with NDD to find informal social support. Critical considerations for rehabilitation providers, researchers, and policymakers to facilitate caregivers' formal and informal social support and coping skills are discussed.

An empirical study of the systemic and technical migration towards microservices

Context

As many organizations modernize their software architecture and transition to the cloud, migrations towards microservices become more popular. Even though such migrations help to achieve organizational agility and effectiveness in software development, they are also highly complex, long-running, and multi-faceted.

Objective

In this study we aim to comprehensively map the journey towards microservices and describe in detail what such a migration entails. In particular, we aim to discuss not only the technical migration, but also the long-term journey of change, on a systemic level.

Method

Our research method is an inductive, qualitative study on two data sources. Two main methodological steps take place - interviews and analysis of discussions from StackOverflow. The analysis of both, the 19 interviews and 215 StackOverflow discussions, is based on techniques found in grounded theory.

Results

Our results depict the migration journey, as it materializes within the migrating organization, from structural changes to specific technical changes that take place in the work of engineers. We provide an overview of how microservices migrations take place as well as a deconstruction of high level modes of change to specific solution outcomes. Our theory contains 2 modes of change taking place in migration iterations, 14 activities and 53 solution outcomes of engineers. One of our findings is on the architectural change that is iterative and needs both a long and short term perspective, including both business and technical understanding. In addition, we found that a big proportion of the technical migration has to do with setting up supporting artifacts and changing the paradigm that software is developed.

Bio-straw or not? Determinants of consumption intention under the plastic straw ban

A new plastic ban has banned the use of single-use non-degradable plastic drinking straws in China's food and beverage industry by the end of 2020. However, this has caused widespread discussion and complaints on social media. What are consumers' reactions and what factors influence consumers to choose bio-straws (substitutes for plastic straws) are unclear. Therefore, this research collected 4367 effective comments (177,832 words in total) on "bio-straws" from social media and extracted keywords based on grounded theory to generate questionnaires. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the consumption intention and influencing factors of 348 consumers regarding the ban. The results indicate the following: (1) consumer opinion on straws can be summarized into five main categories, namely, consumers' user experience, consumer subjectivity, policy awareness, policy acceptance, and consumption intention; (2) consumer subjectivity, policy awareness, and policy acceptance directly affect consumption intention significantly, while user experience affects consumption intention indirectly; and (3) user experience and consumer subjectivity play significant roles in mediating these relationships. From the perspective of consumers, this study provides an important basis for policymakers to formulate single-use plastic alternative policies in the future.

Above and Beyond: A Grounded Theory of Aotearoa/New Zealand High School Teachers' Perspectives on International Study Tours

This paper addresses the dearth of research into the roles high school teachers play in organising and leading international study tours offered by high schools in New Zealand (prior to the COVID-19 pandemic). The aim of this paper is to provide insights into the motivations and experiences of teachers involved in these tours. A grounded theory approach was used, and qualitative data were collected via face-to-face interviews with eight teachers forming the basis of the development of a theory which proposes that both navigating and negotiating learning experiences are key aspects of the teacher's role. Data revealed that the expectations and challenges placed upon the teachers had implications for their personal and professional lives. The tension between teachers' perceived obligations for the safety of the students and the adolescent's desire for freedom to explore whilst travelling proved difficult to resolve and teachers questioned the sacrifices they personally needed to make.

Menstruation behaviour influencer model: a grounded theory of menstrual experiences of shame, embarrassment, stigma and absenteeism among pubescent girls in semi-urban and rural secondary schools in Enugu State, Nigeria

Introduction

severally, studies had identified menstrual-associated shame, embarrassment, stigma, and absenteeism among pubescents in school with resultant challenges on their bio psycho-social functioning. However, what is not clear is the contribution of the home and school to the experiences. The objectives of the study were to explore the experiences with menstruation and menstrual hygiene management; explore the experiences with menstrual-associated shame, embarrassment, stigma, and absenteeism among participants; explore the bio-psycho-social issues associated with the experiences; understand the meaning of the experiences and propose a mid-range theory that explains the influences on pubescents´ menstrual behaviours.

Methods

constructivist grounded theory design was used to explore the experiences of 20 purposively recruited pubescents from rural and semi-urban secondary schools. In-depth Interviews, focused group discussions, key informant interviews, and observations were employed to collect data until data saturation. Open and focused coding was conducted to identify emerging themes and sub-themes. These themes were returned to participants and literature for verification.

Results

four (4) categories and eleven (11) sub-categories emerged from the data and formed four (4) themes that influence pubescents´ menstrual behaviour. They include: 1) individuals´ bio-physiological status, knowledge of menstrual health and menstrual characteristics; 2) regimenting school through strict rule enforcement, punishment/motivation, forced participation, and compliance; 3) scheduling academic activities/examination, sporting and other extra curricula activities; and 4) providing menstrual support by individual and institutional efforts to pubescents. Based on the relationship with other themes, the menstrual behaviour influencer model was proposed.

Conclusion

menstrual influencers require the interaction between menstrual support and menstrual enablers by institutions for positive menstrual behavior. Failure to achieve this balance will lead to menstrual-associated shame, embarrassment, stigma, absenteeism, and school drop-out.

The deployment of discretionary power in the prevention and enactment of structural violence against young people experiencing homelessness

BACKGROUND

Young people experiencing homelessness (YEH) interact with, and are reliant on, multiple social systems in their daily efforts to meet their basic needs. Criminalization of homelessness contributes to victimization, and social service providers can act as gatekeepers for access to services, yet little is known about how criminalization and social service policies impact access to food, housing, and other basic needs resources.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to explore how YEH access safety and basic needs resources and how they interface with social systems and systems agents while attempting to meet their basic needs.

PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING

Forty-five YEH participated in youth-led interviews across San Francisco.

METHODS

We conducted a qualitative Youth Participatory Action Research study utilizing Participatory Photo Mapping to interview YEH on their experiences of violence, safety, and accessing basic needs. A grounded theory analysis identified patterns of youth victimization and barriers to meeting their basic needs.

RESULTS

Analysis revealed the role of decision-making power of authority figures (e.g., social service providers, law enforcement officers, other gatekeepers) in enacting or preventing structural violence against YEH. When authority figures utilized their discretionary power to allow access to services, YEH were able to meet their basic needs. Discretionary power enacted to limit movement, prevent access, or cause physical harm limited the ability of YEH to meet their basic needs.

CONCLUSIONS

The discretionary power of authority figures can contribute to structural violence when their discretion is used to interpret laws and policies in ways that prevent access to limited basic needs resources for YEH.

Patient safety in home health care: a grounded theory study

BACKGROUND

The home environment is designed for living, not for professional care. For this reason, safe patient care is one of the most important challenges of home health care. Despite abundant research on safe care, there is still little understanding of safety issues in home care.

DESIGN

The aim of the present study was to explain the process of safe patient care in home health care. A qualitative, grounded theory study was conducted based on the approach proposed by Corbin & Strauss in 2015.

METHOD

In total, 22 interviews were conducted with 16 participants including 9 home care nurses, 2 home care nursing assistants, 1 home care inspector, 1 home care physician and 3 family caregivers in Tehran, Iran. Four observation sessions were conducted in different homes. Purposeful sampling was used followed by theoretical sampling from August 2020-July 2022. Data analysis was carried out based on the approach proposed by Corbin & Strauss in 2015.

RESULTS

The results showed that the healthcare members (nurses, family caregivers, patients and home care centers) used the model of safe patient care in home health care based on four assessment methods, i.e. prevention, foresight, establishment of safety and verification. The core variable in this process is foresight-based care.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study showed that the key to safe patient care in home health care, which helps to maintain patient safety and prevent threats to safe care, is the foresight of healthcare members, which is essential for identifying threats to safe care considering the many risks of home health care.

[Qualities of Excellent Clinical Teachers: An Empirical Study Based on Frontline Clinical Teachers]

Objective

Teachers' instructional ability is an important guarantee for the quality of instruction. With the continuous enrichment of the content of medical education, there arises an urgent need to strengthen theoretical research on the instructional competence of teachers of clinical courses.

Methods

Based on the grounded theory approach, we explored the constituent elements of clinical teachers' instructional competence through conducting in-depth interviews with 16 outstanding clinical medical teachers.

Results

By progressively encoding the original sentences, 97 codes, 33 concepts, and 11 categories were obtained, and ultimately 5 main categories of teaching competence of clinical teachers were derived-motivation, knowledge, ability, personal character, and development.

Conclusion

Instructional competence is the continuous accumulation of knowledge and ability, as driven by development and supported by strong motivation and personal character. Improvements in instructional competence require not only the efforts by teachers themselves, but also a wide variety of institutional and policy support.

Advancing a grounded theory of parental support in competitive girls' golf

Parental support in youth sport has been associated with positive athlete outcomes, such as sport enjoyment and continued participation. Although research has demonstrated the significant and influential role parents fulfil in the youth sport context, there remains a dearth of theoretical frameworks detailing parental support in youth sport and an absence of empirical research examining parental support across athlete development stages and sports. The present study sought to examine athletes' perceptions of parental support, with a view to advancing a grounded theory of parental support in youth golf. Fourteen online synchronous focus groups were conducted with an international sample (Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland) of 61 girls, in the specialising (n = 27) and investment stages (n = 34) of athlete development. Data were analysed in three phases: open-coding, axial coding, and theoretical integration. The substantive grounded theory is constructed on the core category of 'Individual Parental Support Preferences'. This core category is underpinned by four sub-categories of parental support which were evident across development stages: instrumental, informational, emotional, and autonomy support, and is influenced by a host of athlete (e.g., athletes' performance), parent (e.g., parents' knowledge), and contextual characteristics (e.g., location). Unconditional parental support is an important aspect of emotional support, however the concept of adopting a person-first approach to sport parenting is novel. These results provide a rich and novel insight of parental support in girls' golf, advancing a grounded theoretical understanding of parental support mechanisms in a youth sport context.

Using grounded theory to develop a theory of change for a violence intervention program

Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIP) are critical to interrupting the cycle of violence. These interventions are considered "complex" in that they have many mechanisms of change and related outcomes. Few HVIPs clearly identify the underlying mechanisms of intervention and explicitly link those with key outcomes however, limiting the field's ability to know what works best and for whom. To develop a program theory of change for these "complex interventions," a non-linear, robust methodology that is grounded in the lived experience of those delivering and receiving services is needed. To aid researchers, evaluators, students, and program developers, we describe the use of Grounded Theory as a methodology to enhance the development of complex interventions, illuminating a non-linear approach that engages key stakeholders. To illustrate application, we describe a case example of The Antifragility Initiative, a HVIP in Cleveland, Ohio. The development of the program theory of change was conducted in four phases: (1) review of existing program documents, (2) semi-structured interviews with program developers (n = 6), (3) a focus group with program stakeholders (n = 8), and (4) interviews with caregivers and youth (n = 8). Each phase informed the next and culminated in a theoretical narrative and visual model of the Antifragility Initiative. Together, the theoretical narrative and visual model identify the underlying mechanisms that can promote change by the program.

Educators' perceptions of their experiences of transnational education in nursing: A grounded theory study

AIM

The study aim was to explore educators' perceptions of their experiences of participating in transnational education in nursing.

BACKGROUND

In an increasingly globalised world, involvement with the delivery of transnational education has become commonplace across the international higher education sector. In recent years, transnational education within the academic discipline of nursing has developed at pace, evolving in response to a global need to invest in nurse education, address nursing shortages and strengthen nursing leadership. However, despite acknowledgement that transnational education is a complex activity that needs to be more fully understood, research specifically exploring transnational education in nursing is scarce, as previous studies predominantly focus on other academic disciplines. The study addresses this knowledge gap, advancing understanding of transnational education in the context of nursing.

DESIGN

The study was positioned within the interpretivist paradigm and underpinned by a constructivist grounded theory methodological design, acknowledging the prior knowledge and experience of the research team in relation to phenomenon under investigation.

METHODS

Ethical approval was obtained before the study commenced, ensuring adherence to key ethical principles. The study was conducted during May to August 2020, in a university in the North of England that provides undergraduate and postgraduate nurse education in the United Kingdom and transnational context. Participants were recruited via e mail and invited to complete a brief questionnaire, informing a preliminary theoretical sampling strategy. Ten educators with experience of transnational education across a diverse range of international locations participated in individual, semi-structured, online interviews that were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analysed using initial and focused coding, constant comparison, theoretical memos and diagrams.

FINDINGS

The findings uncovered three overarching data categories, each of which were crucial to supporting effective transnational education in nursing. Prepare- involved developing an understanding of the context of healthcare and education, being supported and collaborating with transnational partners. Perform- involved recognising language and cultural influences, adapting to the environment and implementing responsive educational pedagogies. Progress- involved recognition of personal development at individual level and valuing the benefits at organisational level.

CONCLUSIONS

Although transnational education in nursing can be challenging and complex, it can offer worthwhile advantages for all stakeholders. However, effective transnational education in nursing is dependent on strategies which prepare educators appropriately and enable them to perform effectively, thereby promoting successful outcomes at individual, organisational and transnational partner level and facilitating advancement in future potential collaborative activity.

Construction of a cutoff and fusion model of breast cancer patients in family: a grounded theory study

PURPOSE

To construct a coping model for interactions between breast cancer patients and their families across the disease trajectory using the patients' voice, and to establish a mechanism for restoring family balance when faced with stresses related to breast cancer.

METHODS

This study employed a longitudinal qualitative study design using constructivist grounded theory. We divided breast cancer trajectory into four periods: suspicion, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. We then interviewed patients during each of these periods.

RESULTS

Twenty patients with breast cancer were interviewed. A cutoff and fusion model of the breast cancer patient's interactions with her family contained three coping themes: independence, coexistence, and interconversion. The coping trajectory of breast cancer patients in their families has specific themes in each period, such as anxiety, information, emotion, and experience.

CONCLUSION

We constructed a cutoff and fusion model of breast cancer patients' coping trajectory in their families. This model not only explains the opposite, coexistent, and interconvertible relationship between cutoff and fusion but also the specific challenges requiring cutoff and fusion during the four periods. Our findings highlight the dynamic balance of cutoff and fusion for patients' coping in their families.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

This model helps clinical staff understand the coping of breast cancer patients in their families. When providing family education, clinical staff should suggest that they not only provide support to the patient but give each other space as well.

Midwives' experiences with a safe childbirth checklist: A grounded theory study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to explore midwives' experiences with a safe childbirth checklist used in handover situations from birth to hospital discharge. Quality of care and patient safety is highly recognised and a priority within health services globally. In handover situations, checklists have proven to reduce unwanted variation by standardising processes, which in turn contribute to increased quality of care. To improve the quality of care, a safe childbirth checklist was implemented at a large maternity hospital in Norway.

DESIGN

We conducted a Glaserian grounded theory (GT) study.

SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS

A total of 16 midwives were included. We included three midwives in one focus group and conducted 13 individual interviews. Years of experience as midwives ranged from one to 30 years. All included midwives worked in a large maternity hospital in Norway.

FINDINGS

The main concern faced by the midwives who used the checklist included no common understanding of the purpose of the checklist nor consensus on how to use the checklist. The generated grounded theory, individualistic interpretation of the checklist, involved the following three strategies that all seemed to explain how the midwives solved their main concern: 1) not questioning the checklist, 2) constantly evaluating the checklist, and 3) distancing oneself from the checklist. Experiencing an unfortunate event concerning the healthcare of both mother or newborn was a condition that could alter the midwives understanding and use of the checklist.

KEY CONCLUSIONS

The findings in this study showed that a general lack of common understanding and consensus on the rationale for implementing a safe childbirth checklist led to variations between midwives in how and whether the checklist was used. The safe childbirth checklist was described as long and detailed. It was not necessarily the midwife who was expected to sign the checklist who had carried out the tasks signed for. To ensure patient safety, recommendations for future practice include securing that separate sections of a safe childbirth checklist are limited to a specific time-point and midwife.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Findings emphasise the importance of implementation strategies supervised by the leaders of the healthcare services. Further research should explore the understanding of organisational and cultural context when implementing a safe childbirth checklist to clinical practice.

Patients' perspectives on, experience with and concerns about crohn's disease: insights from Chinese social media

AIM

The aim of this study was to explore the experience and perceptions of patients with Crohn's disease in China.

METHODS

Data mining was used to investigate posts in Crohn's disease online medical communities. The data were collected through the crawler code, and latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) and grounded theory were used to mine the theme features after data cleaning.

RESULTS

In analyzing the topic characteristics of online posts, LDA divided 6757 posts into 15 topics on four aspects: seeking disease information, making decisions on medication use, psychological burden, and communicating about diet and nutrition.

CONCLUSION

Overall, social media is patient-centric and helps us better understand the experiences and perceptions of patients. This study can help medical staff predict the thoughts and concerns of Crohn's disease patients during the treatment process, facilitate doctor-patient communication, and assist in the formulation of medical policies.

Tourism-type ontology framework for tourism-type classification, naming, and knowledge organization

The names of tourism types formed by scholars and practitioners reflect the connotations of various tourism types from different aspects and carry a wealth of tourism knowledge. The documents containing the names and connotations of 232 tourism types were sorted from the Springer Encyclopedia of Tourism and 16 major international academic journals. These documents were analyzed using the coding method of grounded theory. A total of 155 naming elements, 22 subcategories, and six categories were extracted. These naming elements, subcategories, and categories constitute the tourism-type ontology, which is the first tourism-type classification framework. Furthermore, the construction of tourism-type ontology enriches the existing research on overall tourism knowledge. The tourism-type ontology can also be used as a preliminary framework for organizing overall tourism knowledge and a foundation for constructing a unified tourism-type naming rule.

The community proactive health management model based on the grounded theory: The case of Beijing, China

The 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic has been a governance challenge for countries and cities worldwide. In China, the community-based joint prevention and control governance mechanism is one of the highlights of the "Chinese experience" in fighting the pandemic. As aging accelerates, communities can take on more functions in managing the health of their residents. Especially in the post-pandemic era, the actual needs of community residents in terms of health, medical care, and elderly care need to be addressed. This paper uses a questionnaire to understand the current situation of community health management in Beijing, followed by the selection of four typical communities for in-depth interviews, and uses the triple process of open coding, selective coding, and theoretical coding of the grounded theory to analyze residents' needs and willingness for proactive health management. More than 80 concepts, 41 categories, and 6 master categories were obtained from 204 initial statements. The "logical line" of the relationship between the main categories was constructed, and we developed a conceptual model of community-based proactive health management, consisting of six dimensions: (1) perception and willingness, (2) primary population, (3) health behavior paradigm, (4) management mechanism, (5) information technology applications, and (6) facilities and services. The study aims to contribute to the community-based health management in China and for the international community and provide strategies to improve community-based health management.

How to choose a preceptor: aspects to consider based on a grounded theory study

BACKGROUND

Nurses in clinical practice settings share responsibility with academy teachers in the education of nursing students in clinical teaching. This dynamic is essential for the students' learning and their skill development. During preceptorship, the nurse has to mobilize the available resources to act competently and effectively. The purpose of this article is to identify the aspects that should be considered when selecting a nurse preceptor.

METHODS

A qualitative study was carried out based on Grounded Theory using Strauss and Corbin's version. The study took place in a medicine ward and a surgery ward of a hospital in the Lisbon metropolitan area. The authors conducted fourteen semi-structured interviews with nurses who were at different stages of Benner's Professional Development Model and with different outlooks on nursing preceptorship. The initial script was reorganized after the pilot test. It was also adjusted after the first exploratory interviews and after the in-depth interviews in order to reflect the interviewees' work experience and outlooks on preceptorship. The interviews had an average duration of 45 min and were audio recorded. Theoretical sampling was conducted considering the needs identified in data coding until we reached theoretical saturation. Data analysis began after the first interview, first by open coding, followed by axial and selective coding, always in a logic of constant comparison with theory. Ethical principles, scientific integrity and methodological rigour were ensured throughout the study.

RESULTS

Two categories emerged that were supported by all nurses: skills and individual characteristics. The former includes communication skills, relational skills, reflective skills, technical-scientific skills, and emotional skills, while the latter includes perceptiveness, responsibility, motivation, and professional initiative.

CONCLUSION

Nurses value both the individual characteristics they possess and the skills they have developed throughout their career. The recognition of the aspects found in this study for the selection of nurse preceptors allows for an informed and reasoned decision making, with a view to the success of the preceptorship and to the improvement of the quality of nursing education.

The construction of patient quality management model in oral post anesthesia care unit in China: a grounded theory approach

BACKGROUND

Nowadays, people have paid more and more attention to the quality of physical and mental health recovery after oral surgery anesthesia. As a remarkable feature of patient quality management, it can effectively reduce the risk of postoperative complications and pain in Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). However, the patient management model in oral PACU remains unknown, especially in China. The purpose of this study is to explore the management elements of patient quality management in the oral PACU and to construct the management model.

METHODS

Strauss and Corbin's grounded theory method was used to explore the experiences of three anesthesiologists, six anesthesia nurses and three administrators working in oral PACU. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted using face-to-face in a tertiary stomatological hospital from March to June, 2022. The interviews were transcribed and thematically analysed according to QSR NVivo 12.0 qualitative analysis tool.

RESULTS

Three themes and ten subthemes were identified through an active analysis process, including three of the core team members: stomatological anesthesiologists, stomatological anesthesia nurses and administrators, three of the main functions: education and training, patient care and quality control and four of the team operation processes: analysis, plan, do, check.

CONCLUSION

The patient quality management model of the oral PACU is helpful for the professional identity and career development of stomatological anesthesia staff in China, which can accelerate the professional development of oral anesthesia nursing quality. According to the model, the patient's pain and fear will decrease, meanwhile, safety and comfort will increase. It can make contributions to the theoretical research and clinical practice in the future.

Mental health and its influencing factors of maintenance hemodialysis patients: a semi-structured interview study

BACKGROUND

Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) is a commonly used renal replacement therapy for end-stage renal disease patients. MHD patients have undergone multiple physiological stressors, which may cause physical problems and affect their mental health; however, few qualitative studies have been done on the mental health of MHD patients. Such qualitative research becomes the basis for further quantitative research and is critical to validating its results. Therefore, the current qualitative study used a semi-structured interview format, and aimed to explore the mental health and its influencing factors of MHD patients who are not receiving intervention treatment to determine how best to ameliorate their mental health.

METHODS

Based on the application of Grounded Theory, semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted with 35 MHD patients, following consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative studies (COREQ) guidelines. Two indicators (emotional state and well-being) were used to assess MHD patients' mental health. All interviews were recorded, after which two researchers independently performed data analyses using NVivo.

RESULTS

Acceptance of disease, complications, stress and coping styles, and social support were found to be the influencing factors of MHD patients' mental health. High acceptance of disease, healthy coping styles, and high social support were positively correlated with mental health. In contrast, low acceptance of disease, multiple complications, increased stress, and unhealthy coping styles were negatively correlated with mental health.

CONCLUSION

One's acceptance of the disease played a more significant role than other factors in affecting MHD patients' mental health.
