B3Al4+: A Three-Dimensional Molecular Reuleaux Triangle

We systematically explore the potential energy surface of the B3Al4+ combination of atoms. The putative global minimum corresponds to a structure formed by an Al4 square facing a B3 triangle. Interestingly, the dynamical behavior can be described as a Reuleaux molecular triangle since it involves the rotation of the B3 triangle at the top of the Al4 square. The molecular dynamics simulations, corroborating with the very small rotational barriers of the B3 triangle, show its nearly free rotation on the Al4 ring, confirming the fluxional character of the cluster. Moreover, while the chemical bonding analysis suggests that the multicenter interaction between the two fragments determines its fluxionality, the magnetic response analysis reveals this cluster as a true and fully three-dimensional aromatic system.

On the JAP Method for the Indirect Determination of Delocalized Currents from Experimental Chemical Shifts

The JAP model (after Jirásek, Anderson, and Peeks) to retrieve global current strengths from experimental 1 H chemical shifts has been tested with DFT computations. Both global and local tropicities are correctly predicted in most cases and the quantitative agreement is overall fair. An extension of the model is found to give improvement in an exemplary critical case, where the global delocalized current is negligible and the current density map is dominated by local currents.

A QCT View of the Interplay between Hydrogen Bonds and Aromaticity in Small CHON Derivatives

The somewhat elusive concept of aromaticity plays an undeniable role in the chemical narrative, often being considered the principal cause of the unusual properties and stability exhibited by certain π skeletons. More recently, the concept of aromaticity has also been utilised to explain the modulation of the strength of non-covalent interactions (NCIs), such as hydrogen bonding (HB), paving the way towards the in silico prediction and design of tailor-made interacting systems. In this work, we try to shed light on this area by exploiting real space techniques, such as the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), the Interacting Quantum Atoms (IQA) approaches along with the electron delocalisation indicators Aromatic Fluctuation (FLU) and Multicenter (MCI) indices. The QTAIM and IQA methods have been proven capable of providing an unbiased and rigorous picture of NCIs in a wide variety of scenarios, whereas the FLU and MCI descriptors have been successfully exploited in the study of diverse aromatic and antiaromatic systems. We used a collection of simple archetypal examples of aromatic, non-aromatic and antiaromatic moieties within organic molecules to examine the changes in π delocalisation and aromaticity induced by the Aromaticity and Antiaromaticity Modulated Hydrogen Bonds (AMHB). We observed fundamental differences in the behaviour of systems containing the HB acceptor within and outside the ring, e.g., a destabilisation of the rings in the former as opposed to a stabilisation of the latter upon the formation of the corresponding molecular clusters. The results of this work provide a physically sound basis to rationalise the strengthening and weakening of AMHBs with respect to suitable non-cyclic non-aromatic references. We also found significant differences in the chemical bonding scenarios of aromatic and antiaromatic systems in the formation of AMHB. Altogether, our investigation provide novel, valuable insights about the complex mutual influence between hydrogen bonds and π systems.

Crystal structure of N-butyl-2,3-bis-(di-cyclo-hexyl-amino)-cyclo-propeniminium chloride benzene monosolvate

N-Butyl-2,3-bis-(di-cyclo-hexyl-amino)-cyclo-propenimine (1) crystallizes from benzene and hexa-nes in the presence of HCl as a mono-benzene solvate of the hydro-chloride salt, [1H]Cl·C6H6 or C31H54N3 +·Cl-·C6H6, in the P21/n space group. The protonation of 1 results in the generation of an aromatic structure based upon the delocalization of the cyclo-propene double bond around the cyclo-propene ring, giving three inter-mediate C-C bond lengths of ∼1.41 Å, and the delocalization of the imine-type C-N double bond, giving three inter-mediate C-N bond lengths of ∼1.32 Å. Ion-ion and ion-benzene packing inter-actions are described and illustrated.

Evolution of Triangular All-Metal Aromatic Complexes from Bonding Quandaries to Powerful Catalytic Platforms

This manuscript describes an overview on the literature detailing the observation of trinuclear complexes that present delocalized metal-metal bonds similar to those of regular aromatics, which are formed combining main group elements. A particular emphasis is given to the structural and electronic features of aromatic clusters that are sufficiently stable to allow their isolation. In parallel to the description of their key bonding properties, the work presents reported catalytic applications of these complexes, which already span from elaborated C-C-forming cascades to highly efficient cross-coupling methods. These examples present peculiar aspects of the unique reactivity exerted by all-metal aromatic complexes, which can often be superior to their established, popular mononuclear peers in terms of chemoselectivity and chemical robustness.

An Anionic Amido-Substituted Seven-Vertex Siliconoid Cluster

The silanide [Si4 {N(SiMe3 )Dipp}3 ]- (1) transforms into the anionic siliconoid cluster [Si7 {N(SiMe3 )Dipp}3 ]- (2) with four unsubstituted silicon atoms as a contact ion pair with [K([18]crown-6)] in C6 D6 at room temperature within five weeks. Anion 2 was investigated by natural population analysis and visualization of intrinsic atomic orbitals. Magnetically induced current-density calculations of 2 revealed two distinct strong diatropic vortices that sum up in one direction and create a strongly shielded apical silicon atom in 2.

On-Surface Synthesis of C144 Hexagonal Coronoid with Zigzag Edges

Coronoids as polycyclic aromatic macrocycles enclosing a cavity have attracted a lot of attention due to their distinctive molecular and electronic structures. They can be also regarded as nanoporous graphene molecules whose electronic properties are critically dependent on the size and topology of their outer and inner peripheries. However, because of their synthetic challenges, the extended hexagonal coronoids with zigzag outer edges have not been reported yet. Here, we report the on-surface synthesis of C144 hexagonal coronoid with outer zigzag edges on a designed precursor undergoing hierarchical Ullmann coupling and cyclodehydrogenation on the Au(111) surface. The molecular structure is unambiguously characterized by bond-resolved noncontact atomic force microscopy imaging. The electronic properties are further investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements, in combination with the density functional theory calculations. Moreover, the values of the harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity are derived from calculations that suggest that the molecular structure is ideally represented by Clar's model. Our results provide approaches toward realizing a hexagonal coronoid with zigzag edges, potentially inspiring fabrication of hexagonal zigzag coronoids with multiple radical characters in the future.

Correspondence on "How Aromatic Are Molecular Nanorings? The Case of a Six-Porphyrin Nanoring"

A recent Research Article in this journal by Matito and co-workers claimed that none of the oxidation states of a butadiyne-linked six-porphyrin nanoring exhibit global aromaticity or antiaromaticity. Here we show that this conclusion is incorrect. Experimental data from NMR spectroscopy for a whole family of nanorings provide strong evidence for global ring currents. The NMR data reveal these ring currents directly, without needing analysis by density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, DFT calculations reproduce the experimental results when a suitable functional is used.

Synthesis and Properties of BN-embedded N-Perylene

A B-N embedded nitrogen-annulated perylene has been successfully synthesized. The resultant molecule BN-NP is isoelectronic to coronene , but owns a five-membered pyrrole ring. Experiments and DFT calculations indicated that peripheral pyrrole and BN modifications endow BN-NP with various unique properties like bent structure, dual emission, efficient Lewis acidic response, peripheral aromaticity, narrowest energy band gap among all coronene isoelectronic structures and so on.

syn and anti Metal Complexes of 24π Antiaromatic Bis(dicarbonylrhodium(I))dithiaamethyrin

From the reaction of sterically less hindered tetrapropyl[24]dithiaamethyrin(1.0.0.1.0.0) 5, with [Rh(CO)2Cl]2, a unique anti form of the bis(dicarbonylrhodium(I)) complex (6-anti), where two rhodium ions are on the opposite faces of the macrocyclic ligand, was isolated for the first time in 12% yield along with the corresponding syn isomer (6-syn, 61% yield). These structures were characterized in detail by single-crystal X-ray structure analysis. Compound 6-syn exhibited a bowl-shaped structure with the two rhodium atoms separated by a distance of ~4.5 Å. In contrast, 6-anti contained a wave-shaped macrocycle with a distance of ~5.3 Å between the two rhodium atoms. Furthermore, the 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and density functional theory calculation results revealed that 6-anti had a stronger paratropic ring current and a more planar structure than 6-syn. The isolation of both 6-anti and 6-syn enabled the structure-property relationship to be discussed in detail.

Highly-fluorinated Triaminocyclopropenium Ionic Liquids

A series of highly-fluorinated triaminocyclopropenium salts, with up to six fluorous groups, were prepared and their properties as ionic liquids investigated. Reaction of pentachlorocyclopropane or tetrachlorocyclopropene with bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)amine, HN(CH2 CF3 )2 , occurs in the presence of a trialkylamine, NR3 , to give cations with two fluorinated amino groups, [C3 (N(CH2 CF3 )2 )2 (NR2 )]+ (R=Et, Pr, Bu, Hex), with traces of [C3 (N(CH2 CF3 )2 )3 ]+ . Use of appropriate reagent ratios and reaction times and subsequent addition of a dialkylamine, HNR'R", gives cations with one fluorinated amino group, [C3 (N(CH2 CF3 )2 )(NR2 )(NR'R")]+ ((NR2 )(NR'R")=(NBu2 )2 , (NEt2 )(NPr2 ), (NBu2 )(NBuMe)). These cations were isolated as chloride salts and some of these were converted to bistriflamide, dicyanamide and triflate salts to provide ionic liquids. These salts were characterised by thermal (DSC and TGA) measurements and miscibility/solubility properties (determined in a range of solvents). Ionic liquids (ILs) were also characterised by density, viscosity and conductivity measurements where possible. X-ray diffraction studies of chloride salts showed the formation of fluorous regions and more hydrophilic ionic regions in the solid state.

[2.2.2.2]Paracyclophanetetraenes (PCTs): cyclic structural analogues of poly( p‑phenylene vinylene)s (PPVs)

Background: Poly( p-phenylene vinylene)s ( PPVs) and [2.2.2.2]paracyclophanetetraene ( PCT) are both composed of alternating π-conjugated para-phenylene and vinylene units. However, while the former constitute a class of π-conjugated polymers that has been used in organic electronics for decades, the latter is a macrocycle that only recently revealed its potential for applications such as organic battery electrodes. The cyclic structure endows PCT with unusual properties, and further tuning of these may be required for specific applications. Methods: In this article, we adopt an approach often used for tuning the properties of PPVs, the introduction of alkoxy (or alkylthio) substituents at the phenylene units, for tuning the optoelectronic properties of PCT. The resulting methoxy- and methylthio-substituted PCTs, obtained by Wittig cyclisation reactions, are studied by UV-vis absorption, photoluminescence, and cyclic voltammetry measurements, and investigated computationally using the visualisation of chemical shielding tensors (VIST) method. Results: The measurements show that substitution leads to slight changes in terms of absorption/emission energies and redox potentials while having a pronounced effect on the photoluminescence intensity. The computations show the effect of the substituents on the ring currents and chemical shielding and on the associated local and global (anti)aromaticity of the macrocycles, highlighting the interplay of local and global aromaticity in various electronic states. Conclusions: The study offers interesting insights into the tuneability of the properties of this versatile class of π-conjugated macrocycles.

Cyclopentannulated Dihydrotetraazapentacenes

The transition-metal-catalyzed cyclization of bissilylethynylated N,N'-dihydrotetraazapentacene (TIPS-TAP-H2 ) into bissilylated cyclopenta[fg,qr]pentacenes is reported. Depending on the catalyst either none, one or two silyl groups migrate and change their positions in the formed five-membered rings. The optoelectronic properties are quite similar, whereas the packing motifs differ dramatically. Control experiments and quantum chemical calculations were performed to investigate the mechanism of the reaction and the selectivity of the silyl shift.

Analysis in silico of chemical reactivity employing the local hyper-softness in some classic aromatic compounds, boron aromatic clusters and all-metal aromatic clusters

In the current work, the authors analyzed and compared the chemical behavior of some (anti)aromatic compounds. The species selected are benzene and cyclobutadiene as the aromatic and antiaromatic classical examples, respectively. Next, the anion Al 4 2 - , which is the first all-metal molecule catalogued as aromatic and its non-metallic isoelectronic analog, B 4 2 - were also analyzed. The antiaromatic clusters Al 4 4 - and B 4 4 - were studied in form of lithium salts. And the end, the non-planar B 12 boron cluster and its isoelectronic analogs ( B 11 Be - and B 11 C + ) were considered for being analyzed under the same criterium. The analysis was realized employing the following descriptors: molecular electrostatic potential and local hyper-softness to get insights concerning local reactivity when facing reagents leading to ionic or covalent interactions. The results show that all the molecules analyzed presented some specific variations in their respective local reactivity despite being labeled as aromatic compounds. This analysis provides a notion that the local reactivity is more based on the nature of the atoms and the molecular geometry than the aromatic character by itself.

Synthesis, Aromaticity, and Application of peri-Pentacenopentacene: Localized Representation of Benzenoid Aromatic Compounds

We report the synthesis and optoelectronic properties of TIPS-peri-pentacenopentacene (TIPS-PPP), a vertical extension of TIPS-pentacene (TIPS-PEN) and a low-band-gap material with remarkable stability. We found the synthetic conditions to avoid the competition between 1,2- and 1,4-addition of lithium acetylide on the large aromatic dione. The high stability of TIPS-PPP is due to the peri-fusion which increases the aromaticity by generating two localized aromatic sextets that are flanked with 2 diene fragments, similar to two fused-anthracenes. Like TIPS-PEN, TIPS-PPP shows the archetypal 2D brickwall motif in crystals with a larger transfer integral and smaller reorganization energy. The high mobility of up to 1 cm²  V^-1  s^-1 was obtained in an organic field-effect transistor fabricated by a wet process. Also, TIPS-PPP was used as a near-infrared (NIR) emitter for NIR organic-light-emitting-diode devices resulting in a high external quantum efficiency at 800 nm.

Revival of Hückel Aromatic (Poly)benzenoid Subunits in Triplet State Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by Silicon Substitution

By employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations we show that mono- and disilicon substitution in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, having two to four benzene units, quenches their triplet state antiaromaticity by creating Hückel aromatic (poly)benzenoid subunit(s) and weakly antiaromatic, or almost nonaromatic silacycle. Therefore, such systems are predicted to be globally aromatic in both the ground state and the first excited triplet state. Putting the silicon atom(s) into various positions of a hydrocarbon provides an opportunity to tune the singlet-triplet energy gaps. They depend on the global aromaticity degree which, in turn, depends on the type of aromatic carbocyclic subunit(s) and the extent of their aromaticity. On the basis of the set of studied compounds, some preliminary rules on how to regulate the extent of global, semiglobal and local aromaticity are proposed. The results of this work extend the importance of Hückel aromaticity concept to excited triplet states which are usually characterized by the Baird type of (anti)aromaticity.

Hückel- and Baird-type 3D Global Aromaticity in a Fully Conjugated Molecular Cage

Global aromaticity in 3D π-conjugated molecular cages remains largely unexplored. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a fully conjugated molecular cage ( 1 ) containing two bridged triphenylamine units and three quinoidal bithiophene arms. X-ray crystallographic analysis, NMR/ESR measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that: ( 1 ) its dication ( 1 2+ ) has an open-shell singlet ground state and is 3D globally aromatic, with individual macrocycles being 2D Hückel aromatic; (2) its tetracation ( 1 4+ ) has a triplet ground state and is also 3D globally aromatic, with individual macrocycles being 2D Baird aromatic; and (3) its hexacation ( 1 6+ ) has a closed-shell nature and shows local aromaticity. The study revealed a close relationship between 2D Hückel/Baird aromaticity and 3D global π-aromaticity.

Azepine- or Oxepine-embedded Double Saddle-Helix Nanographenes

The azepine- and oxepine-embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) 1-3, as the hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC)-based nanographenes (NG) were designed and synthesized by Diels-Alder reaction of cyclic alkene with tetrachlorothiophene-S,S-dioxide, followed by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and Scholl-type cyclodehydrogenation. Due to the strained seven-membered ring and the inherent structural pattern, heteroatom-doped NGs 1-3 show C_s symmetrical, double saddle-helix hybrid conformation, which represents a new shape for HBC based nanographenes. The calculation studies reveal the low aromaticity of the 8π heterocycles themselves and the heterocycles also decrease the electron delocalization of benzenes surrounding them. Dynamics-based calculation suggests the C_s symmetry would maintain druing the saddle-inversion process. Meanwhile, we show property perturbation by doping with different heteroatoms.

Tetrabromo[36]octaphyrin: A Promising Precursor of Directly Fused Porphyrin(2.1.1.1) Dimer and meso-α Fused N-Confused Porphyrin Dimer

3,7,23,27-Tetrabromo[36]octaphyrin 2 was synthesized as a novel octaphyrin bearing two meso-free positions. Surprisingly, its Zn^II and Ni^II complexation reactions produced a directly fused porphyrin(2.1.1.1) dimer 6, and a meso-α fused N-confused porphyrin (NCP) dimer 7, as the first example of NCP tape, respectively, via transannular C-C bond formation. While 6 exhibits a diatropic ring-current effect owing to the global 36π Möbius aromaticity, 7 shows a paratropic ring-current effect due to the global Hückel 36π antiaromaticity. In addition, the oxidation of 7 with PbO₂ allowed for formation of its two-electron oxidized species 9 that exhibited a diatropic ring-current effect due to the global Hückel 34π aromaticity. This work has demonstrated that meso-free large expanded porphyrins can be a promising platform to produce novel fused porphyrinoids.

Occurrence of Double Bond in π-Aromatic Rings: An Easy Way to Design Doubly Aromatic Carbon-Metal Structures

A chemical bonding of several metallabenzenes and metallabenzynes was studied via an adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) algorithm and the induced magnetic field analysis. A unique chemical bonding pattern was discovered where the M=C (M: Os, Re) double bond coexists with the delocalized 6c-2e π-bonding elements responsible for aromatic properties of the investigated complexes. In opposition to the previous description where 8 delocalized π-electrons were reported in metallabenzenes and metallabenzynes, we showed that only six delocalized π-electrons are present in those molecules. Thus, there is no deviation from Hückel's aromaticity rule for metallabenzynes/metallabenzenes complexes. Based on the discovered bonding pattern, we propose two thermodynamically stable novel molecules that possess not only π-delocalization but also retain six σ-delocalized electrons, rendering them as doubly aromatic species. As a result, our investigation gives a new direction for the search for carbon-metal doubly aromatic molecules.

Cage-···Cage- Interaction: Boron Cluster-Based Noncovalent Bond and Its Applications in Solid-State Materials

Carboranes are boron-carbon clusters with important applications in the fields of materials, catalysis, pharmaceuticals, etc. However, the noncovalent interactions that could determine the solid-state structures and properties of such boron clusters have rarely been investigated. Herein, inspired by the coordinate bond in metallacarborane or ferrocene, the boron cluster-based noncovalent interaction (denoted as cage^-···cage^- interaction) between two nido-carborane clusters was successfully realized by using a pyridinium-based molecular barrier. The X-ray diffraction studies uncover that the cage^-···cage^- interaction has a contacting distance of 5.4-7.0 Å from centroid to centroid in the systems reported here. Theoretical calculations validate the formation of the noncovalent interaction and disclose its repulsive bonding nature that is overcome thanks to the positively charged pyridinium-based framework. Interestingly, such bulk crystalline materials containing the cage^-···cage^- interaction show relevant properties such as full-color absorption in the visible light range and important photothermal effect, which are absent for the control compound without carboranes. This study may offer fundamental insights into the boron cluster-based noncovalent interactions and open a new research avenue to rationally design boron cluster-based materials.

Ring Size Determines the Conformation, Global Aromaticity and Photophysical Properties of Macrocyclic Oligofurans

In π-conjugated macrocycles, there is a trade-off between the global and local expression of effects such as aromaticity, with the outcome of the trade-off determined by the geometry and aromaticity of the constituent units. Compared with other aromatic rings, the aromatic character of furan is relatively small, and therefore global effects in macrocyclic furans are expected to be more pronounced. Following our introduction of macrocyclic oligofuran, we present the first synthesis of a series of π-conjugated bifuran macrocycles of various ring sizes, from trimer to hexamer, and characterize them using both computational and experimental methods. The properties of macrocyclic oligofurans change considerably with size: The smaller trimer is rigid, weakly emissive and planar as revealed by its single crystal structure, and displays global antiaromaticity. In contrast, the larger pentamer and hexamer are flexible, emissive, have non-planar structures, and exhibit local aromaticity. The results are supported by NICS and ACID calculations that indicate the global antiaromaticity of planar furan macrocycles, and by transient absorption measurements showing sharp absorption band for the trimer and only the internal conversion decay pathway.

How Aromatic Are Molecular Nanorings? The Case of a Six-Porphyrin Nanoring*

Large conjugated rings with persistent currents are novel promising structures in molecular-scale electronics. A six-porphyrin nanoring structure that allegedly sustained an aromatic ring current involving 78π electrons was recently synthesized. We provide here compelling evidence that this molecule is not aromatic, contrary to what was inferred from the analysis of 1 H-NMR data and computational calculations that suffer from large delocalization errors. The main reason behind the absence of an aromatic ring current in these nanorings is the low delocalization in the transition from the porphyrins to the bridging butadiyne linkers, which disrupts the overall conjugated circuit. These results highlight the importance of choosing a suitable computational method to study large conjugated molecules and the appropriate aromaticity descriptors to identify the part of the molecule responsible for the loss of aromaticity.

Towards the Idea of Molecular Brains

How can single cells without nervous systems perform complex behaviours such as habituation, associative learning and decision making, which are considered the hallmark of animals with a brain? Are there molecular systems that underlie cognitive properties equivalent to those of the brain? This review follows the development of the idea of molecular brains from Darwin’s “root brain hypothesis”, through bacterial chemotaxis, to the recent discovery of neuron-like r-protein networks in the ribosome. By combining a structural biology view with a Bayesian brain approach, this review explores the evolutionary labyrinth of information processing systems across scales. Ribosomal protein networks open a window into what were probably the earliest signalling systems to emerge before the radiation of the three kingdoms. While ribosomal networks are characterised by long-lasting interactions between their protein nodes, cell signalling networks are essentially based on transient interactions. As a corollary, while signals propagated in persistent networks may be ephemeral, networks whose interactions are transient constrain signals diffusing into the cytoplasm to be durable in time, such as post-translational modifications of proteins or second messenger synthesis. The duration and nature of the signals, in turn, implies different mechanisms for the integration of multiple signals and decision making. Evolution then reinvented networks with persistent interactions with the development of nervous systems in metazoans. Ribosomal protein networks and simple nervous systems display architectural and functional analogies whose comparison could suggest scale invariance in information processing. At the molecular level, the significant complexification of eukaryotic ribosomal protein networks is associated with a burst in the acquisition of new conserved aromatic amino acids. Knowing that aromatic residues play a critical role in allosteric receptors and channels, this observation suggests a general role of π systems and their interactions with charged amino acids in multiple signal integration and information processing. We think that these findings may provide the molecular basis for designing future computers with organic processors.

Novel Synthetic Approach to Heteroatom Doped Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Optimizing the Bottom-Up Approach to Atomically Precise Doped Nanographenes

The success of the rational bottom-up approach to nanostructured carbon materials and the discovery of the importance of their doping with heteroatoms puts under the spotlight all synthetic organic approaches to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The construction of atomically precise heteroatom doped nanographenes has evidenced the importance of controlling its geometry and the position of the doping heteroatoms, since these parameters influence their chemical-physical properties and their applications. The growing interest towards this research topic is testified by the large number of works published in this area, which have transformed a once "fundamental research" into applied research at the cutting edge of technology. This review analyzes the most recent synthetic approaches to this class of compounds.
