Economic Separations of Organic Acidic or Basic Enantiomeric Mixtures-A Protocol Suggestion

In this review, we aim to present new concepts for the revisited separation of enantiomers from racemic compounds and a protocol worth to be followed in designing the preparation of pure enantiomers. We have taken into account not only the influence of the properties (eutectic composition) and characteristics of the reactants (racemic compound, resolving agent), but also the behavior of the resulting diastereomers and the different conditions (e.g., crystallization time, solvents used, solvate-forming compounds, achiral additives, etc.). The examples discussed are resolutions developed by our research team, through which we will try to illustrate the impact of all these considerations, presenting the methodological investigations interpreting recent discoveries and observations. Some special solid-state analytical and structural investigations assisting us in the elucidation and invention design of the resolution processes of some active pharmaceutical ingredients, such as Tetramisole, tofisopam, and Amlodipine, are also shown.

Novel Pharmaceutical Cocrystals and Solvate Crystals of Nobiletin, a Citrus Flavonoid with Potent Pharmacological Activity

Nobiletin (NOB) is a flavonoid with attractive pharmaceutical characteristics, including anti-Alzheimer's, anti-inflammation, and anti-cancer properties, but it has low solubility in water, resulting in reduced bioavailability. Its solubility must be improved to develop NOB as a drug. Cocrystal engineering can change the physicochemical properties of an active pharmaceutical ingredient and generate remarkable drug candidates that are superior in drug formulation. In this report, extensive co-crystal screening of NOBs with 31 cocrystal formers (coformers) with various functional groups was carried out by the liquid-assisted grinding method. As a result, four cocrystals (NOB with urea (URE), oxalic acid, gallic acid and salicylic acid) and one solvate crystal (NOB with formic acid (FOR)) were found. Powder X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis revealed the unique crystal morphology of all the obtained samples. In addition, the crystal structures of two of them (NOB-URE and NOB-FOR) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The results revealed that NOB-URE and NOB-FOR are new cocrystals or solvate crystals consisting of molar ratios of 1 : 2 and 1 : 0.73, respectively. In NOB-URE, we could observe a transient increase in solubility due to supersaturation, suggesting that URE is one of the better coformers of NOB.

Aqueous Sugar-Based Amphiphile Systems: Recent Advances in Phase Behavior and Nanoarchitectonics

Currently, numerous fascinating molecular assemblies are used in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Sugar-based amphiphiles are representative constituents of these molecular assemblies. Despite numerous studies on these generic compounds, many aspects remain unexplored even in aqueous systems. In this review, molecular assembly studies of sugar-based amphiphiles in aqueous systems are summarized. First, recent advances in molecular assembly studies, including the glassy state of lyotropic and thermotropic liquid crystalline (LC) phases, modulated crystal phases, and coagels consisting of nanofibers of alkyl β-D-glycosides, are presented. Second, research on thermotropic LC phases under desiccated conditions of trehalose fatty acid monoesters to clarify the fundamental behaviors of the glassy state and their use as stabilizers of glass-forming surfactants for pharmaceutical applications are discussed. Several effective X-ray analytical approaches are included to identify or clarify these phenomena, unknown or unsolved for a long time. Third, a comprehensive analysis of vitamin E (tocopherol)-cyclodextrin in aqueous systems is presented. Along with these topics, the importance of investigating stabilizer-free functional components, considered minor components, is highlighted. These unveiled phenomena or concepts will contribute to the development of nanoarchitectonics covering the self-assembly and selforganization of soft molecules.

Total ice content and lipid saturation determine adipose tissue cryolipolysis by injection of ice-slurry

OBJECTIVES

Cryolipolysis uses tissue cooling to solidify lipids, preferentially damaging lipid-rich cells. Topical cooling is popular for the reduction of local subcutaneous fat. Injection of biocompatible ice-slurry is a recently introduced alternative. We developed and verified a quantitative model that simulates the heat exchange and phase changes involved, offering insights into ice-slurry injection for treating subcutaneous fat.

METHODS

Finite element method was used to model the spatial and temporal progression of heat transfer between adipose tissue and injected ice-slurry, estimating dose-response relationships between properties of the slurry and size of tissue affected by cryolipolysis. Phase changes of both slurry and adipose tissue lipids were considered. An in vivo swine model was used to validate the numerical solutions. Oils with different lipid compositions were exposed to ice-slurry in vitro to evaluate the effects of lipid freezing temperature. Microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were performed to detect lipid phase changes.

RESULTS

A ball of granular ice was deposited at the injection site in subcutaneous fat. Total injected ice content determines both the effective cooling region of tissue, and the duration of tissue cooling. Water's high latent heat of fusion enables tissue cooling long after slurry injection. Slurry temperature affects the rate of tissue cooling. In swine, when 30 ml slurry injection at -3.5°C was compared to 15 ml slurry injection at -4.8°C (both with the same total ice content), the latter led to almost twice faster tissue cooling. NMR showed a large decrease in diffusion upon lipid crystallization; saturated lipids with higher freezing temperatures were more susceptible to solidification after ice-slurry injection.

CONCLUSIONS

Total injected ice content determines both the volume of tissue treated by cryolipolysis and the cooling duration after slurry injection, while slurry temperature affects the cooling rate. Lipid saturation, which varies with diet and anatomic location, also has an important influence.

Synthesis, characterization, thermokinetic analysis and biological application of novel allyl glucosamine based glycopolymers

The synthesis of glycopolymers by copolymerising an allyl glucosamine (AG) monomer with co-monomers methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylonitrile (AN) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was investigated via free-radical polymerisation of 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) in dimethylformamide (DMF). Three new copolymers, poly(AG-co-MMA), poly(AG-co-AN) and poly(AG-co-HEMA), were obtained. The chemical structures of the glycopolymers were analysed using ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR and FTIR. The thermal properties and degradation kinetics of the three glycopolymers were examined by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis at different heating rates. The effects of different co-monomers on the copolymerisation yield, thermal properties and biological activities of the resulting glycopolymers were investigated. The activation energies of the decomposition stages were calculated using the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) and Kissinger methods. Furthermore, the biological activity of AG monomers and glycopolymers was studied and compared to chitosan. Poly(AG-co-HEMA) had the most significant effect on MCF-7 cell viability, and all glycopolymers have a low toxic effect profile on MCF-7 cell lines.

Formation and Characterisation of Posaconazole Hydrate Form

Posaconazole is an API added as Form I for the production of oral suspensions, but it is found as Form-S in the final formulation. In this study, it was found that this polymorphic conversion, which may affect the bioavailability, is due to an interaction with water. However, the relatively poor wettability of posaconazole Form I renders the complete wetting of its particles and production of pure Form-S challenging. Consequently, for its isolation, Form I should be dispersed in water followed by application of sonication for at least 10 min. Pure posaconazole Form-S was characterised using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Raman spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and optical microscopy. From these techniques, posaconazole Form-S was characterised as a hydrate form, which includes three molecules of water per API molecule.

Schiff Base in Ketoamine Form and Rh(η4-cod)-Schiff Base Complex with Z' = 2 Structure from Pairwise C-H···Metallochelate-π Contacts

Condensation of 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde (salicylaldehyde) or 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde with 2-ethylaniline yields the Schiff base compound of (E)-2-(((2-ethylphenyl)imino)methyl)phenol (HL¹) or (E)-1-(((2-ethylphenyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol (HL²), which in turn react with the dinuclear complex of [Rh(η⁴-cod)(µ-O₂CCH₃)]₂ (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) to afford the mononuclear (η⁴-cod){(E)-2-(((2-ethylphenyl)imino)methyl)phenolato-κ²N,O}rhodium(I), [Rh(η⁴-cod)(L¹)] (1) or (η⁴-cod){(E)-1-(((2-ethylphenyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-olato-κ²N,O}rhodium(I), [Rh(η⁴-cod)(L²)] (2) (L¹ or L² = deprotonated Schiff base ligand). The X-ray structure determination revealed that the HL² exists in the solid state not as the usual (imine)N···H-O(phenol) form (enolamine form) but as the zwitterionic (imine)N-H⁺···^-O(phenol) form (ketoamine form). ¹H NMR spectra for HL² in different solvents demonstrated the existence of keto-enol tautomerism (i.e., keto ⇆ enol equilibrium) in solution. The structure for 1 and 2 showed that the deprotonated Schiff base ligand coordinates to the Rh(η⁴-cod)-fragment as a six-membered N^O-chelate around the rhodium atom with a close-to-square-planar geometry. Two symmetry-independent molecules (with Rh1 and Rh2) were found in the asymmetric unit in 1 in a structure with Z' = 2. The supramolecular packing in HL² was organized by π-π and C-H···π contacts, while only two recognized C-H···π contacts were revealed in 1 and 2. Remarkably, there were reciprocal or pairwise C-H···π contacts between a pair of each of the symmetry-independent molecules in 1. This pairwise C-H contact to the Rh-N^O chelate (metalloaromatic) ring may be a reason for the two symmetry-independent molecules in 1. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses revealed an irreversible phase transformation from the crystalline-solid to the isotropic-liquid phase and subsequently confirmed the thermal stability of the compounds. Absorption spectra in solution were explained by excited state properties from DFT/TD-DFT calculations.

Structural, Thermal and Magnetic Analysis of Two Fe-X-B (X = Nb, NiZr) Nanocrystalline Alloy

High-energy ball milling was used to produce two Fe-X-B (X = Nb, NiZr) nanocrystalline alloys. X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were used to analyze the microstructure, thermal, and magnetic characteristics of the milled powders, the agglomerated particles (also generated during the milling process), and the compacted specimens of both alloys. The main crystallographic phase is always a bcc Fe-rich solid solution; whereas a minor Nb(B) phase is detected on powders and agglomerated particles in the Fe₈₀Nb₈B₁₂ alloy. The crystalline size of the Fe₈₀(NiZr)₈B₁₂ alloy is between 11 and 14 nm, whereas in the Fe₈₀Nb₈B₁₂ alloy, it ranges between 8 and 12 nm. Microstrain and dislocation density are higher in agglomerated samples for both alloys than in milled powders. Thermal analysis detects structural relaxation and crystal growth exothermic processes with high dispersion in the temperature intervals and in the calculated apparent activation energy of the main crystallization process. Regarding magnetic behavior, the coercivity values of all powdered-agglomerated specimens were around 800 A/m. The coercivity is higher in compacted sample, but controlled annealing favors enhanced soft behavior.

The Use of Hybrid Genetic Algorithm in the Kinetic Analysis of Thermal Decomposition of [Ni(C2H8N2)3](ClO4)2 with Overlapping Stages

This work describes the mathematical modeling of the thermal decomposition of the complex compound [Ni(En)₃](ClO₄)₂ (En = C₂H₈N₂ = ethylenediamine) in an inert atmosphere under non-isothermal conditions. This process is characterized by several simultaneous and intense stages: elimination of ethylenediamine from the nickel coordination sphere, decomposition of perchlorate anions, and explosive-like oxidation of free or bound ethylenediamine. These stages overlap and merge into a one step on the differential thermogravimetric curve. Typically, this curve is modeled as a one-stage process during kinetic analysis. In this paper, for the first time, the data from the dynamic mass-spectral thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis were modeled using the hybrid genetic algorithm, and the results were compared. A two-stage scheme of [Ni(En)₃](ClO₄)₂ thermolysis was proposed and the kinetic parameters for each stage were obtained. It was shown that the decomposition of [Ni(En)₃](ClO₄)₂ begins with the elimination of one molecule of ethylenediamine (stage A), then the perchlorate anions quickly decompose with the evolution of oxygen (stage B). We believe that the resulting ClO4-x- (x = 1-3), as stronger oxidizing agents, instantly start an explosive-like exothermic process of ethylenediamine oxidation (stage B).

Thermal Treatment Impact on the Mechanical Properties of Mg3Si2O5(OH)4 Nanoscrolls

A group of phyllosilicate nanoscrolls conjoins several hydrosilicate layered compounds with a size mismatch between octahedral and tetrahedral sheets. Among them, synthetic Mg₃Si₂O₅(OH)₄ chrysotile nanoscrolls (obtained via the hydrothermal method) possess high thermal stability and mechanical properties, making them prospective composite materials fillers. However, accurate determination of these nano-objects with Young's modulus remains challenging. Here, we report on a study of the mechanical properties evolution of individual synthetic phyllosilicate nanoscrolls after a series of heat treatments, observed with an atomic force microscopy and calculated using the density functional theory. It appears that the Young's modulus, as well as shear deformation's contribution to the nanoscrolls mechanical behavior, can be controlled by heat treatment. The main reason for this is the heat-induced formation of covalent bonding between the adjacent layers, which complicate the shear deformation.

A Top-Down Approach and Thermal Characterization of Luminescent Hybrid BPA.DA-MMA@Ln2L3 Materials Based on Lanthanide(III) 1H-Pyrazole-3,5-Dicarboxylates

In this study, novel hybrid materials exhibiting luminescent properties were prepared and characterized. A top-down approach obtained a series of polymeric materials with incorporated different amounts (0.1; 0.2; 0.5; 1, and 2 wt.%) of dopants, i.e., europium(III) and terbium(III) 1H-pyrazole-3,5-dicarboxylates, as luminescent sources. Methyl methacrylate and bisphenol A diacrylate monomers were applied for matrix formation. The resulting materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermal analysis methods (TG-DTG-DSC, TG-FTIR) in air and nitrogen atmosphere, as well as by luminescence spectroscopy. The homogeneity of the resulting materials was investigated by means of optical microscopy. All obtained materials exhibited good thermal stability in both oxidizing and inert atmospheres. The addition of lanthanide(III) complexes slightly changed the thermal decomposition pathways. The main volatile products of materials pyrolysis are carbon oxides, water, methyl methacrylic acid and its derivatives, bisphenol A, 4-propylphenol, and methane. The luminescence properties of the lanthanide complexes and the prepared hybrid materials were investigated in detail.

The Effect of Combined Atmospheric Plasma/UV Treatments on Improving the Durability of Flame Retardants Applied to Cotton

Application of a combined atmospheric plasma/UV laser to cotton fabrics impregnated with selected non-durable flame retardants (FRs) has shown evidence of covalent grafting of the latter species on to cotton fibre surfaces. As a result, an increase in their durability to water-soaking for 30 min at 40 °C has been recorded. Based on previous research plasma gases comprising Ar80%/CO220% or N280%/O220% were used to pre-expose cotton fabric prior to or after FR impregnation to promote the formation of radical species and increased −COOH groups on surface cellulosic chains, which would encourage formation of FR-cellulose bonds. Analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermal analysis (TGA) suggested that organophosphorus- and nitrogen- containing flame retarding species in the presence of the silicon-containing molecules such as 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane (APTS) resulted in formation of FR-S-O-cellulose links, which gave rise to post-water-soaking FR retentions > 10%. Similarly, the organophosphorus FR, diethyl N, N bis (2-hydroxyethyl) aminomethylphosphonate (DBAP), after plasma/UV exposure produced similar percentage retention values possibly via (PO).O.cellulose bond formation, While none of the plasmas/UV-treated, FR-impregnated fabrics showed self-extinction behaviour, although burning rates reduced and significant char formation was evident, it has been shown that FR durability may be increased using plasma/UV treatments.

Deep Learning Based Infrared Thermal Image Analysis of Complex Pavement Defect Conditions Considering Seasonal Effect

Deep learning techniques underpinned by extensive data sources encompassing complex pavement features have proven effective in early pavement damage detection. With pavement features exhibiting temperature variation, inexpensive infra-red imaging technology in combination with deep learning techniques can detect pavement damages effectively. Previous experiments based on pavement data captured during summer sunny conditions when subjected to SA-ResNet deep learning architecture technique demonstrated 96.47% prediction accuracy. This paper has extended the same deep learning approach to a different dataset comprised of images captured during winter sunny conditions to compare the prediction accuracy, sensitivity and recall score with summer conditions. The results suggest that irrespective of the prevalent weather season, the proposed deep learning algorithm categorises pavement features around 92% accurately (95.18% in summer and 91.67% in winter conditions), suggesting the beneficial replacement of one image type with other. The data captured in sunny conditions during summer and winter show prediction accuracies of DC = 96.47% > MSX = 95.24% > IR-T = 93.83% and DC = 94.14% > MSX = 90.69% > IR-T = 90.173%, respectively. DC images demonstrated a sensitivity of 96.47% and 94.20% for summer and winter conditions, respectively, to demonstrate that reliable categorisation is possible with deep learning techniques irrespective of the weather season. However, summer conditions showing better overall prediction accuracy than winter conditions suggests that inexpensive IR-T imaging cameras with medium resolution levels can still be an economical solution, unlike expensive alternate options, but their usage has to be limited to summer sunny conditions.

The Effect of Argon Plasma Surface Treatment on Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)/Collagen-Based Biomaterials for Bone Tissue Engineering

Nonunion bone fractures can impact the quality of life and represent a major economic burden. Scaffold-based tissue engineering has shown promise as an alternative to bone grafting. Achieving desirable bone reconstruction requires appropriate surface properties, together with optimizing the internal architecture of 3D scaffolds. This study presents the surface modification of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), collagen, and PLGA-collagen via an argon plasma treatment. Argon plasma can modify the surface chemistry and topography of biomaterials and improve in vivo integration. Solvent-cast films were prepared using 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol and characterized via differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, contact angle measurement, and critical surface tension analysis. For PLGA films, the water contact angle dropped from 70° to 42°, whereas the diiodomethane contact angle reduced from 53° to 32° after the plasma treatment. A set of PLGA-collagen formulations were loaded with nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to enhance their osteoconductivity and hydrophilicity. Then, 3D scaffolds were fabricated using a 3D Bioplotter and characterized via Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. A bicinchoninic acid assay (BCA) was used to compare the protein release from the untreated and plasma-treated scaffolds into phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The plasma-treated scaffolds had a lower protein release, and the difference compared to the untreated scaffolds was statistically significant.

Physicochemical, Thermal, and Morphological Properties of Chitosan Nanoparticles Produced by Ionic Gelation

Chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) can be widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic sectors due to their high performance, unique properties, and high surface area. In this research, CSNPs were produced by the ionic gelation method and using sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) as an appropriate technique compared to the conventional methods. To evaluate the effects of various factors on the size, zeta potential (ZP), and optimal synthesis conditions, different concentrations of CS (1, 3, and 5 mg/mL), STPP (0.5, 0.75, and 1 mg/mL), and CS to STPP ratio (1:1, 3:1, and 5:1) were applied and optimized using the response surface methodology. The size of CSNPs was increased by using higher concentrations of CS, STPP, and CS/STPP ratios. The value of ZP was determined positive and it increased with increasing CS concentrations and CS/STPP ratios. ATR-FTIR spectra revealed interactions between CS and STPP. The DSC thermogram of CSNPs showed a double sharp endothermic peak at about 74.5 °C (ΔH = 122.00 J/g); further, the TGA thermograms indicated the total weight loss of STPP, CS, and CSNPs as nearly 3.30%, 63.60%, and 52.00%, respectively. The XRD data also revealed a greater chain alignment in the CSNPs. Optimized, the CSNPs can be used as promising carriers for bioactive compounds where they also act as efficient stabilizers in Pickering emulsions.

Mechanism of Shrinkage in Compacted Graphite Iron and Prediction of Shrinkage Tendency

Shrinkage greatly influences the mechanical and fatigue properties of compacted graphite iron and it is necessary in order to study the causes of shrinkage in compacted graphite iron and to predict it effectively. In this paper, a kind of cylindrical necking test sample was designed to evaluate the shrinkage in compacted graphite iron, and a method to calculate the size of shrinkage was proposed. By observing the microstructure around the shrinkage zone, it is concluded that concentrated shrinkage mainly appears in the solidification region where the dendritic gap is closed, and the isolated shrinkage mainly occurs in the final solidification region, and the supersaturated carbon elements are gathered on the surface of the shrinkage. The cause of shrinkage in compacted graphite iron is caused by its solidification method, where the austenite dendrites and the eutectic clusters are generated close to the melt zone during the solidification process, leading to the inability to feed the shrinkage. Based on the thermodynamic analysis, the equations between the volume change of each phase, solid phase rate, and time during solidification of compacted graphite iron were established to theoretically explain the formation mechanism of the shrinkage. Taking nine parameters such as the chemical elements and characteristic values of thermal analysis as the input nods, a four-layer BP neural network model for predicting the size of shrinkage in compacted graphite iron was constructed, and the R-squared of the model reached 97%, which indicates it could be used to predict the shrinkage tendency.

FTIR-PCA Approach on Raw and Thermally Processed Chicken Lipids Stabilized by Nano-Encapsulation in β-Cyclodextrin

This study evaluated similarities/dissimilarities of raw and processed chicken breast and thigh lipids that were complexed by β-cyclodextrin, using a combined FTIR-PCA technique. Lipid fractions were analyzed as non-complexed and β-cyclodextrin-complexed samples via thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and ATR-FTIR. The lipid complexation reduced the water content to 7.67-8.33%, in comparison with the β-cyclodextrin hydrate (~14%). The stabilities of the complexes and β-cyclodextrin were almost the same. ATR-FTIR analysis revealed the presence of important bands that corresponded to the C=O groups (1743-1744 cm^-1) in both the non-complexed and nano-encapsulated lipids. Furthermore, the bands that corresponded to the vibrations of double bonds corresponding to the natural/degraded (cis/trans) fatty acids in lipids appeared at 3008-3011 and 938-946 cm^-1, respectively. The main FTIR bands that were involved in the discrimination of raw and processed chicken lipids, and of non-complexed and complexed lipids, were evaluated with PCA. The shifting of specific FTIR band wavenumbers had the highest influence, especially vibrations of the α(1→4) glucosidic bond in β-cyclodextrin for PC₁, and CH_2/3 groups from lipids for PC₂. This first approach on β-cyclodextrin nano-encapsulation of chicken lipids revealed the possibility to stabilize poultry fatty components for further applications in various ingredients for the food industry.

Comparison of Physical and Thermal Properties of Mulching Films Made of Different Polymeric Materials

The development of polymer materials causes their huge expansion into various areas of everyday life, as well as plant and animal production. Their chemical resistance, good physical properties, and ease of processing result in an increasing use of this group of materials. Outdoor plant production both in open plantations and greenhouses requires various types of materials supporting the vegetation process as well as protecting against pests and weeds. A large group here are various types of materials used for covers of field crops, the main role of which is to prevent uncontrolled and excessive growth of weeds and thus reduce the use of herbicides as plant protection products. Cover films also have other important functions, such as reducing direct water evaporation, better moisture retention around the root system, increasing soil temperature (faster vegetation), etc. However, as always, the problem of introducing new material into agriculture production and the difficulty of its disposal arises. In recent times, farmers' interest in various forms of mulch to protect crops and increase yields has grown significantly. In the publication, the authors attempted to analyze selected commercial properties, but also mulch produced on a laboratory scale, based on biodegradable and petroleum-derived materials.

Determination of Melting Parameters of Cyclodextrins Using Fast Scanning Calorimetry

The first evidence of native cyclodextrins fusion was registered using fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) with heating rates up to 40,000 K s-1. The endothermal effects, detected at low heating rates, correspond to the decomposition processes. Upon the increase of the heating rate the onset of these effects shifts to higher temperatures, reaching a limiting value at high heating rates. The limiting temperatures were identified as the melting points of α-, β- and γ-cyclodextrins, as the decomposition processes are suppressed at high heating rates. For γ-cyclodextrin the fusion enthalpy was measured. The activation energies of thermal decomposition of cyclodextrins were determined by dependence of the observed thermal effects on heating rates from 4 K min-1 in conventional differential scanning calorimetry to 40,000 K s-1 in FSC. The lower thermal stability and activation energy of decomposition of β-cyclodextrin than for the other two cyclodextrins were found, which may be explained by preliminary phase transition and chemical reaction without mass loss. The obtained values of fusion parameters of cyclodextrins are needed in theoretical models widely used for prediction of solubility and solution rates and in preparation of cyclodextrin inclusion compounds involving heating.

AC/DC Thermal Nano-Analyzer Compatible with Bulk Liquid Measurements

Nanocalorimetry, or thermal nano-analysis, is a powerful tool for fast thermal processing and thermodynamic analysis of materials at the nanoscale. Despite multiple reports of successful applications in the material sciences to study phase transitions in metals and polymers, thermodynamic analysis of biological systems in their natural microenvironment has not been achieved yet. Simply scaling down traditional calorimetric techniques, although beneficial for material sciences, is not always appropriate for biological objects, which cannot be removed out of their native biological environment or be miniaturized to suit instrument limitations. Thermal analysis at micro- or nano-scale immersed in bulk liquid media has not yet been possible. Here, we report an AC/DC modulated thermal nano-analyzer capable of detecting nanogram quantities of material in bulk liquids. The detection principle used in our custom-build instrument utilizes localized heat waves, which under certain conditions confine the measurement area to the surface layer of the sample in the close vicinity of the sensing element. To illustrate the sensitivity and quantitative capabilities of the instrument we used model materials with detectable phase transitions. Here, we report ca. 10⁶ improvement in the thermal analysis sensitivity over a traditional DSC instrument. Interestingly, fundamental thermal properties of the material can be determined independently from heat flow in DC (direct current) mode, by using the AC (alternating current) component of the modulated heat in AC/DC mode. The thermal high-frequency AC modulation mode might be especially useful for investigating thermal transitions on the surface of material, because of the ability to control the depth of penetration of AC-modulated heat and hence the depth of thermal sensing. The high-frequency AC mode might potentially expand the range of applications to the surface analysis of bulk materials or liquid-solid interfaces.

Photocatalytic Activity of Sulfanyl Porphyrazine/Titanium Dioxide Nanocomposites in Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Magnesium(II) sulfanyl porphyrazine with peripheral morpholinethoxy substituents was embedded on the surface of titanium(IV) dioxide nanoparticles. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized with the use of particle size and distribution (NTA analysis), electron microscopy (SEM), thermal analysis (TGA), FTIR-ATR spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The measured particle size of the obtained material was 327.4 ± 15.5 nm. Analysis with XRD showed no visible changes in the crystallinity of the material after deposition of porphyrazine on the TiO₂ surface. However, SEM images revealed noticeable changes in the morphology of the obtained hybrid material: higher aggregation and less ordered structure of the aggregates. The TGA analysis revealed the lost 3.6% (0.4 mg) of the mass of obtained material in the range 250-550 °C. In the FTIR-ATR analysis, C-H stretching vibratins in the range of 3000-2800 cm^-1, originating from porphyrazine moieties, were detected. The photocatalytic applicability of the nanomaterial was assessed in photodegradation studies of methylene blue and bisphenol A as reference environmental pollutants. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation of carbamazepine with porphyrazine/TiO₂ hybrids as photocatalysts was studied, accompanied by an HPLC chromatography assessment of photodegradation. In total, 43% of the initial concentration was achieved in the case of bisphenol A, after 4 h of irradiation, whereas 57% was achieved in the case of carbamazepine. In each photodegradation reaction, the activity of the obtained photocatalytic nanomaterial was proved with almost linear degradation. The photodegradation reaction rate constants were calculated, and revealed 5.75 × 10^-5 s^-1 for bisphenol A and 5.66 × 10^-5 s^-1 for carbamazepine.

Thermal-Optical Evaluation of an Optimized Trough Solar Concentrator for an Advanced Solar-Tracking Application Using Shape Memory Alloy

One of the modern methods for enhancing the efficiency of photovoltaic (PV) systems is implementing a solar tracking mechanism in order to redirect PV modules toward the sun throughout the day. However, the use of solar trackers increases the system's electrical consumption, hindering its net generated energy. In this study, a novel self-tracking solar-driven PV system is proposed. The smart solar-driven thermomechanical actuator takes advantage of a solar heat collector (SHC) device, in the form of a parabolic trough solar concentrator (PTC), and smart shape memory alloy (SMA) to produce effective mechanical energy for solar tracking applications from sun rays. Furthermore, a thermal-optical analysis is presented to evaluate the performance of the solar concentrator for the simulated weather condition of Dammam City, Saudi Arabia. The numerical results of the thermal and optical analyses show the promising feasibility of the proposed system in which SMA springs with an activation temperature between 31.09 °C and 45.15 °C can be utilized for the self-tracking operations. The work presented adds to the body of knowledge an advanced SMA-based SHC device for solar-based self-actuation systems, which enables further expansions within modern and advanced solar thermal applications.

Elastocaloric Properties of Polycrystalline Samples of NiMnGaCu Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy under Compression: Effect of Improvement of Thermoelastic Martensitic Transformation

Shape memory alloys (SMAs) and ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FeSMAs) have recently attracted interest for solid state refrigeration applications. Among NiMnGa-based quaternary systems, NiMnGaCu exhibits an interesting giant magnetocaloric effect thanks to the overlapping of the temperatures related to the magnetic transition and the thermoelastic martensitic transformation (TMT); in particular, for compositions with Cu content of approximately 6 at%. In the present work, we investigated the improvement effect of TMT on the total entropy change (ΔS) in the elastocaloric performances of polycrystalline Ni₅₀Mn_18.5Cu_6.5Ga₂₅ at% alloy samples, just above room temperature. We report an extensive calorimetric and thermomechanical characterization to explore correlations between microstructural properties induced by the selected thermal treatment and elastocaloric response, aiming at providing the basis to develop more efficient materials based on this quaternary system. Both ΔT and ΔS values obtained from mechanical curves at different temperatures and strain recovery tests under fixed load vs. T were considered. Maximum values of ΔS = 55.9 J/KgK and ΔT = 4.5 K were attained with, respectively, a stress of 65 MPa and strain of 4%. The evaluation of the coefficient of performance (COP) was carried out from a cyclic test.

Comparative Analysis of Modulation Techniques on the Losses and Thermal Limits of Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems

This paper presents a comparative analysis of electrical losses and subsequent thermal limits of the inverter of UPSs for small office and home office (SOHO) applications. For this, three PWM modulation techniques applied to the full-bridge converter are considered, with power levels of 100-1000 W and switching frequencies of 30-120 kHz. To validate the electrical and thermal models, a dSapce MicroLabBox equipment was used to implement modulation techniques on a commercial 1000 W UPS, and a Keysight DAQ970A data logger was used for temperature measurements. As a result, the MOSFET temperatures and losses are obtained for the three modulation techniques evaluated, indicating the best scenario for use and its influence on the UPS autonomy time.

Effect of Bi and Ca on the Solidification Parameters of Sr-Modified Al-S-Cu (Mg) Alloys

The effect of tramp elements, mainly Bi and Ca, on the thermal characteristics of Sr-modified Al-Si-Cu and Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys has been investigated using thermal analysis, X-ray radiography, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) techniques. The high affinity of Bi to interact with Sr results in an increase in the Al-Si eutectic temperature, and hence an increase in the size of eutectic silicon particles. In contrast, the Ca-Sr interaction seems to have no significant effect on the alloy thermal behavior. The effect of these interactions on porosity formation has been discussed. Hot zones may be formed in thin cavities, in particular, near the bottom of the mold, leading to formation of unexpected coarse porosity, mostly shrinkage type. The study also highlights the significance of other parameters on porosity formation, such as no melt degassing, SrO, Al₂O₃ (strings or bifilms), as well as the presence of iron-based intermetallics.
