Abstract
Recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) is frequent and can be fatal. Long-term antithrombotic treatment reduces the risk of recurrent VTE but increases the risk of bleeding and, therefore, cannot be proposed for all patients. Predicting the probability of recurrence in an individual patient is of utmost importance for assessing the risk-benefit ratio of long-term anticoagulation. Multiple clinical risk factors for recurrent VTE have been identified which include: unprovoked first episode, anatomical proximal location, male gender, residual venous thrombosis, cancer and antiphospholipid syndrome. d-dimer level after discontinuation of oral anticoagulation can help to predict the risk of recurrence with a good negative predictive value. Finally, genetic polymorphisms and rare inherited deficiencies of natural anticoagulant proteins do not seem to be strongly associated to recurrence. New antithrombotic drugs may, in the near future, improve the safety and of long-term anticoagulation treatment.

Percentage signal recovery derived from MR dynamic susceptibility contrast imaging is useful to differentiate common enhancing malignant lesions of the brain. AJNR Am J Neuroradiol 2011; 32:1004-10. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Differentiation of enhancing malignant lesions on conventional MR imaging can be difficult and various newer imaging techniques have been suggested. Our aim was to evaluate the role of PSR obtained from DSC perfusion measurements in differentiating lymphoma, GBM, and metastases. The effectiveness of PSR was compared with that of rCBV. We hypothesized that the newly defined parameter of PSR is more sensitive and specific in differentiating these lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study included 66 patients (39 men and 27 women; age range: 27-82 years) with a pathologically proved diagnosis of primary CNS lymphoma, GBM, or metastases (22 patients in each group). Mean PSR, min PSR, max PSR, and rCBV were calculated. The classification accuracy of these parameters was investigated by using ROC. RESULTS Mean PSR was high (113.15 ± 41.59) in lymphoma, intermediate in GBM (78.22 ± 14.27), and low in metastases (53.46 ± 12.87) with a P value < .000. F values obtained from 1-way ANOVA analysis for mean, min, and max PSR ratios were 29.9, 39.4, and 23.4, respectively, which were better than those of rCBV (11.1) in differentiating the 3 groups. Max PSR yielded the best ROC characteristics with an A(z) of 0.934 (95% CI, 0.877-0.99) in differentiating lymphoma from metastases and GBM. The A(z) for mean and min PSR of 0.938 (95% CI, 0.0.884-0.990) and 0.938 (95% CI, 0.884-0.991), respectively, was better than rCBV (A(z), 0.534; 95% CI, 0.391-0.676) in the differentiation of metastases from GBM and lymphoma (P ≤ .0001). CONCLUSIONS PSR appears to be a parameter that helps in differentiating intracerebral malignant lesions such as GBM, metastases, and lymphoma.

Detection of rpoB, katG and inhA gene mutations in Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates from Chongqing as determined by microarray. Clin Microbiol Infect 2011; 16:1639-43. Abstract
The emergence of multidrug-resistance Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an increasing threat to tuberculosis control programmes. Susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex isolates by traditional methods requires a minimum of 14 days. This can be reduced significantly if molecular analysis is used. DNA sequencing is a good method for detecting mutation, but cannot be used routinely because of its relatively high cost. A sensitive and specific microarray has been designed to detect mutations in the rifampin resistance determining region of rpoB and loci in katG and inhA associated with isoniazid (INH) resistance. A panel of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates containing 13 different rpoB genotypes, two mutation genotypes within codon 315 of katG and one mutation genotypes at inhA was used to validate the microarray. The results obtained indicate that 100% of rifampicin-resistant M. tuberculosis strains isolated in Chongqing had rpoB mutations, with 531-Ser and 526-His being the most common positions substituted. Of the total 50 INH resistant isolates, 82% had a katG315 mutation and 18% had an inhA mutation. All the mutations detected by the microarray method were also confirmed by conventional DNA sequencing. It is demonstrated that the microarray is an efficient, specialized technique and can be used as a rapid method for detecting rifampin and isoniazid resistance.

Performance of sequential organ failure assessment, logistic organ dysfunction and multiple organ dysfunction score in severe sepsis within Chinese intensive care units. Anaesth Intensive Care 2011; 39:55-60. Abstract
This study assessed the performance of Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, Logistic Organ Dysfunction Score and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score in outcome prediction in severe sepsis. A total of 528 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of severe sepsis were enrolled from two surgical intensive care units of university hospitals in China. Clinical and laboratory data of patients were collected and admission and maximum values of each scoring system were calculated. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve, which were used to assess discrimination, were 0.80, 0.83 and 0.74 for admission Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, Logistic Organ Dysfunction Score and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score respectively, and 0.91, 0.93 and 0.86 for corresponding maximum values respectively. Calibration assessed by the Hosmer-Lemeshow statistic was better with admission (chi2 = 18.2) and maximum Logistic Organ Dysfunction Score (chi2 = 19.6) than with admission (chi2 = 98.1) and maximum Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score (chi2 = 30.9). Brier Scores, indicating the overall performance of the scores, were 0.18, 0.17 and 0.22 for admission Sequential Organ Failure Assessment, Logistic Organ Dysfunction Score and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score respectively, and 0.12, 0.10 and 0.15 for their maximum counterparts respectively. This study found good performance of both admission Sequential Organ Failure Assessment and Logistic Organ Dysfunction Score in severe sepsis, and a slightly weaker performance of admission Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score. Since poor calibration was observed in Logistic Organ Dysfunction Score and Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score, we suggest further study of customisation of these scores in critical illness with severe sepsis.

Abstract
Hypophosphatasia is caused by mutations of the tissue-non-specific alkaline phosphatase ( TNSALP) gene with deficiency of dentin structure. The aim of this study was to examine whether TNSALP mutation in dental pulp cells contributes to dentin dysplasia in hypophosphatasia. Mutation analysis showed that compound heterozygous mutations of TNSALP were identified in three hypophosphatasia patients, including 3 novel mutation sites. Exfoliated teeth from the patients showed abnormal dentin mineralization and loss of cementum, as assessed by ground sections and scanning electron microscope analysis. Dental pulp cells isolated from one of the patients showed a significantly reduced TNSALP activity and mineralization capacity when compared with those in dental pulp cells from the unaffected individuals. Our results suggested that dentin dysplasia in hypophosphatasia may be associated with the decreased mineralization ability of dental pulp cells.

Abstract
The EMBRYONIC FLOWER (EMF) genes are required to maintain vegetative development in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Loss-of-function emf mutants skip the vegetative phase, flower upon germination, and display pleiotropic phenotypes. EMF1 encodes a putative transcriptional regulator, while EMF2 encodes a Polycomb group (PcG) protein. PcG proteins form protein complexes that maintain gene silencing via histone modification. They are known to function as master regulators repressing multiple gene programs. Both EMF1 and EMF2 participate in PcG-mediated silencing of the flower homeotic genes AGAMOUS, PISTILLATA, and APETALA3. Full-genome expression pattern analysis of emf mutants showed that both EMF proteins regulate additional gene programs, including photosynthesis, seed development, hormone, stress, and cold signaling. Chromatin immunoprecipitation was carried out to investigate whether EMF regulates these genes directly. It was determined that EMF1 and EMF2 interact with genes encoding the transcription factors ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE3, LONG VEGETATIVE PHASE1, and FLOWERING LOCUS C, which control seed development, stress and cold signaling, and flowering, respectively. Our results suggest that the two EMFs repress the regulatory genes of individual gene programs to effectively silence the genetic pathways necessary for vegetative development and stress response. A model of the regulatory network mediated by EMF is proposed.

Abstract
We propose an all-fiber band-rejection filter with a tunable bandwidth, which is realized by putting a normal long-period fiber grating in series with a rotary long-period fiber grating written in a twisted single-mode fiber by CO(2) laser pulses. Bandwidth tuning is achieved by applying torsion to the composite grating. Our experimental filter shows a bandwidth tuning of approximately 16.3 nm at a rejection level of approximately 15 dB and a polarization-dependent loss lower than approximately 0.9 dB.
