Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the genetic pathogeny of multiple morphological anomalies of the flagella (MMAF), which is a genetically heterogeneous disorder leading to male infertility. Nine patients with severe asthenozoospermia caused by MMAF were recruited. Whole genome sequencing and Sanger sequencing were performed, and we found that four of the nine patients were affected by the same homozygous frameshift mutation c.11726_11727delCT (p.[Pro3909ArgfsTer33]) in exon 73 of dynein axonemal heavy chain 1 ( DNAH1 ) gene. The parents and the sibling of proband 1 were all identified as heterozygous carriers. This mutation was distinct from previously reported DNAH1 mutations associated with MMAF and only affected the East Asian group. Furthermore, the variant DNAH1 protein could not be detected in spermatozoa by Western blot or immunofluorescence staining although DNAH1 mRNA was expressed in the spermatozoa. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy analysis showed the anomalies in sperm flagella morphology and ultrastructure in patients carrying this genetic variant. In conclusion, our results add to knowledge of the genetic pathogeny of MMAF and further confirmed the effectiveness of genetic screening in the diagnosis of MMAF.

Abstract
Cold-inducible RNA binding protein (CIRP) is over-expressed during cold and many other stresses, and could regulate the adaptation to hypothermia. In the present investigation, the objective was to determine the expression of CIRP in adult yak heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, brain, ovary, testis and skin by relative quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blot and immunohistochemistry from mRNA and protein levels. The CIRP open reading frame encoding was cloned from the domestic yak brain. Results of RT-PCR and Western blot showed the high expression level of CIRP in the heart, kidney, brain, testis and skin, and the lower expression level of CIRP in the lung. Immunohistochemical staining showed CIRP was expressed in the nucleus of neuronal cells, spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes and epidermal cells, and in the cytoplasm of the residual tissues. These observations may provide new data to understand and further study the important role of CIRP protein in the plateau adaptation of the domestic yak on long-term evolution.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to predict the key genes and pathways associated with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). METHODS Based on the microarray data of GSE3467 from Gene Expression Omnibus database, we identified the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between 9 PTC samples and 9 normal controls. With the identified DEGs, functional enrichment analyses were performed. Additionally, a protein-protein interaction network was constructed to screened out some key gene nodes. These key nodes were then performed clustering analysis and pathway enrichment analysis. Furthermore, human PTC-associated network was constructed based on these key genes to investigate the potential relationships between genes and PTC. RESULTS A total of 651 up-regulated and 692 down-regulated DEGs were identified in PTC samples compared with controls. The up-regulated DEGs, such as complement component 3 (C3), were mainly enriched in hsa04610:Complement and coagulation cascades. The down-regulated DEGs, including paired box 8 (PAX8), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG), and cadherin 1, type 1 were found enriched in hsa05216:Thyroid cancer. Total 33 DEGs were considered as key genes, such as PAX8, PPARG and Jun proto-oncogene (JUN). Disease-associated network analysis found that 15 key genes such as JUN, PPARG and matrix metallopeptidase 9 (MMP9) were involved in this network. CONCLUSIONS DEGs of C3, PPARG, PAX8, JUN and MMP9 were differentially expressed in PTC samples and may be used as potential biomarkers in the diagnosis and treatment of PTC. Additionally, pathways of complement and coagulation cascades and thyroid cancer may also play important roles in the development of PTC.

Abstract
While a number of allergens from house dust mites have been described, much remains to be discovered about allergens from storage mites. Here, next-generation sequencing was combined with MS/MS shotgun proteomics to identify proteins, especially potential allergens from Tyrophagus putrescentiae, commonly found in stored food products, especially flour. cDNAs of suspected allergens were cloned and expressed from bacterial cells, and recombinant allergens were tested for binding to IgE in sera from T. putrescentiae-sensitive patients. These analyses identified three previously uncharacterized allergens, Tyr p 28, Tyr p 35, and Tyr p 36, which have been officially assigned by the WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-committee. Recombinant proteins rTyr p 28, rTyr p 35, and rTyr p 36 bound with 47.1%, 82.4%, and 70.6% of T. putrescentiae-sensitive sera. We provide here a new method to identify allergens by the combination of transcriptomic and proteomic approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sip1/Tuftelin Interacting Protein (STIP) is highly conserved from Caenorhabditis elegans to Homo sapiens and has essential biological functions. However, its function in leukemia remains unknown. METHODS Clinic samples and cell model were used in this article to investigate the expression of STIP in lymphoblastic leukemia. The functional research of STIP was performed in ARH-77 by siRNA transfection, immunofluorescence, cell count, cell cycle analysis, qRT-PCR, sub-cellular fractionation assays, immunoprecipitation and western blotting. RESULTS Here, we found that STIP is more highly expressed in both clinical lymphoblastic leukemia samples and cultured leukemia cells than in normal samples. Knockdown of STIP in B lymphoblastic leukemia ARH-77 cells leads to S phase arrest, lower cell proliferation rates, and suppressed AKT and ERK1/2 signaling pathways. Interestingly, when protein phosphatase was inhibited by Calyculin A, STIP knockdown did not result in the dephosphorylation of p-ERK1/2, suggesting the dependence of STIP on protein phosphatase in the regulation of ERK1/2. Among those protein phosphatase inhibited by Calyculin A, PP1γ was found to interact with STIP proven by immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation assays. The binding of STIP with PP1γ may decrease the phosphatase activity of PP1γ, resulting in hyper-activated ERK1/2 signaling. CONCLUSION In summary, the high expression and activation effect on the ERK1/2 signaling of STIP in lymphoblastic leukemia suggest that STIP would be a potential therapy target or diagnosis marker for leukemia.

Abstract
Approaching the theoretically limiting open circuit voltage (Voc) of solar cells is crucial to optimize their photovoltaic performance. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that nanostructured layers can achieve a fundamentally larger Fermi level splitting, and thus a larger Voc, than planar layers. By etching tapered nanowires from planar indium phosphide (InP), we directly compare planar and nanophotonic geometries with the exact same material quality. We show that the external radiative efficiency of the nanostructured layer at 1 sun is increased by a factor 14 compared to the planar layer, leading to a 70 mV enhancement in Voc. The higher voltage arises from both the enhanced outcoupling of photons, which promotes radiative recombination, and the lower active material volume, which reduces bulk recombination. These effects are generic and promise to enhance the efficiency of current record planar solar cells made from other materials as well.

Abstract
Objective: To study the clinical and pathological features and surgical outcome of eyelid/conjunctival amyloidosis. Methods: It was a retrospective case series study. The clinical and pathological records of 11 patients who were diagnosed as eyelid/conjunctival amyloidosis and had surgical treatment between February 2007 and October 2015 at Beijing Tongren Hospital were analyzed. Routine pathological examinations and Congo red staining were performed. All of the 11 patients received surgical treatment. Seven patients with ptosis underwent surgical excision and ptosis repair. One patient with lower eyelid mass underwent surgical excision and reconstruction of the lower eyelid. One patient with upper eyelid mass underwent surgical excision. Two patients with conjunctival mass underwent surgical excision. Results: In the 11 patients, 6 were male and 5 were female. The mean age was 31 years old, median age was 21 years old, and the range of age was13-59 years old. Eight cases presented as eyelid thickening and nodular growth of the conjunctiva, and 7 of them had ptosis. One case presented as tumor of the upper lid. Two cases presented as conjunctival masses at the semilunar fold. None of the patients were found to have systemic involvement. All of the 11 cases received surgical treatment including excision of the lesions and correction of ptosis when necessary. Pathological examinations confirmed the diagnosis of amyloidosis. Follow up time was 1-9 years. Nine cases were stable, 1 case had progression in the conjunctival lesion and 1 case was lost to follow up. Conclusions: Eyelid/conjunctival amyloidosis usually present as mass or diffuse thickening of the eyelid/conjunctiva. The outcome of surgical treatment was satisfying.(Chin J Ophthalmol, 2016, 52: 775-779).

Abstract
UNLABELLED A search for dark matter linelike signals iss performed in the vicinity of the Galactic Center by the H.E.S.S. experiment on observational data taken in 2014. An unbinned likelihood analysis iss developed to improve the sensitivity to linelike signals. The upgraded analysis along with newer data extend the energy coverage of the previous measurement down to 100 GeV. The 18 h of data collected with the H.E.S.S. array allow one to rule out at 95% C.L. the presence of a 130 GeV line (at l=-1.5°, b=0° and for a dark matter profile centered at this location) previously reported in Fermi-LAT data. This new analysis overlaps significantly in energy with previous Fermi-LAT and H.E.S.S. RESULTS No significant excess associated with dark matter annihilations was found in the energy range of 100 GeV to 2 TeV and upper limits on the gamma-ray flux and the velocity weighted annihilation cross section are derived adopting an Einasto dark matter halo profile. Expected limits for present and future large statistics H.E.S.S. observations are also given.

Abstract
A new low-power application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) application is being developed at BNL. As the first step, a 32-channel prototype ASIC was designed and tested recently. Each channel has a preamplifier followed by CR-RC3 shaping circuits and three independent energy bins with comparators and 16-bit counters. The ASIC was fabricated with TSMC 0.35-μm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) process and tested in laboratories. The power consumption is around 1 mW/ch with a 2.5-V supply. With a gain of 400 mV/fC and the peaking time of 500 ns, the equivalent noise charge (ENC) of 360 e- has been measured in room temperature while the crosstalk rate is less than 0.3%. The 10-bit DACs for global thresholds have an integral nonlinearity (INL) less than 0.56% and differential nonlinearity (DNL) less than 0.33%. In the presentation, we will report the detailed test results with this ASIC.

Abstract
Lung cancer is one of the most malignant tumors worldwide with a high mortality rate, which has not been improved since several decades ago. FOX gene family members have been reported to play extensive roles in regulating many biological processes and disorders. In order to clarify the contribution of FOX gene family members in lung cancer biology, we performed expression profiling analysis of FOX gene family members from FOXA to FOXR in lung cancer cell lines and tissue specimens by Real-time PCR, western blot and immunohistochemistry analysis. We found that FOXE1 was the only gene which was over-expressed in six out of eight lung cancer cell lines and human cancer tissue specimens (28 out of 35 cases with higher expression and 7 out of 35 cases with moderate expression). Further investigation showed that MMP2 gene was up-regulated, and autophagy markers such as LC3B, ATG5, ATG12 and BECLIN1, were down-regulated concomitant with the increase of FOXE1. These results implicated that FOXE1 may be an important regulator by targeting autophagy and MMPs pathways in lung cancer development.

Abstract
The inner region of the Milky Way halo harbors a large amount of dark matter (DM). Given its proximity, it is one of the most promising targets to look for DM. We report on a search for the annihilations of DM particles using γ-ray observations towards the inner 300 pc of the Milky Way, with the H.E.S.S. array of ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. The analysis is based on a 2D maximum likelihood method using Galactic Center (GC) data accumulated by H.E.S.S. over the last 10 years (2004-2014), and does not show any significant γ-ray signal above background. Assuming Einasto and Navarro-Frenk-White DM density profiles at the GC, we derive upper limits on the annihilation cross section ⟨σv⟩. These constraints are the strongest obtained so far in the TeV DM mass range and improve upon previous limits by a factor 5. For the Einasto profile, the constraints reach ⟨σv⟩ values of 6×10^{-26} cm^{3} s^{-1} in the W^{+}W^{-} channel for a DM particle mass of 1.5 TeV, and 2×10^{-26} cm^{3} s^{-1} in the τ^{+}τ^{-} channel for a 1 TeV mass. For the first time, ground-based γ-ray observations have reached sufficient sensitivity to probe ⟨σv⟩ values expected from the thermal relic density for TeV DM particles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Fish consumption is a recognized risk factor for elevated serum uric acid (UA) levels, hyperuricemia, and gout. However, the relationship between the consumption of fish cooked by different methods and the risk of hyperuricemia is unclear. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the consumption of fish cooked by different methods and the risk of hyperuricemia in Japanese adults. METHODS AND RESULTS A 3-year follow-up study was conducted with 424 Japanese adults aged 29-74 years. Fish consumption was assessed using a validated self-administered dietary history questionnaire, and hyperuricemia was defined as serum UA ≥7 mg/dL in men and ≥6 mg/dL in women or the use of any anti-gout treatment. During the 3-year follow-up period, we documented 30 newly diagnosed cases of hyperuricemia. After adjusting for potential confounders, multivariate logistic regressions analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between the risk of hyperuricemia and raw (sashimi and sushi) or roasted fish consumption, but not boiled or fried fish consumption. The odds ratios (95% CI) for hyperuricemia with increasing raw fish consumption were 1.00 (reference), 2.51 (0.85, 7.39), and 3.46 (1.07, 11.14) (P for trend: 0.036). Similarly, the odds ratios (95% CI) with increasing roasted fish consumption were 1.00 (reference), 3.00 (0.75, 11.89), and 5.17 (1.30, 20.62) (P for trend: 0.018). CONCLUSION This 3-year follow-up study showed that the consumption of raw or roasted fish, but not boiled or fried fish, was related with a higher risk of hyperuricemia in Japanese adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and the soluble fragment of cytokeratin 19 (CYFRA 21-1) are supposed to have a prognostic role in patients with nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after surgery, but it has not been used as an adjunct to the tumor-node-metastasis (TNM) staging system to provide therapy options for patients with pathological Stage I NSCLC. This study was designed to investigate the effect of serum levels of CEA and CYFRA 21-1 before and after surgery on the prognosis of patients with Stage I NSCLC. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective review was performed regarding the medical records and follow-ups of 169 patients with Stage I NSCLC before and after surgery. The patients were divided into three groups based on levels of serum CEA and CYFRA 21-1 before and after surgery: (1) continuously normal-level groups (CEA [NN] and CYFRA 21-1 [NN] groups); (2) declined to normal-level groups (CEA [HN] and CYFRA 21-1 [HN] groups); and (3) continuously high-level groups (CEA [HH] and CYFRA 21-1 [HH] groups). Survival analysis was conducted using the Kaplan-Meier method for each group. The Chi-square or Fisher exact test was employed to compare clinical and pathologic factors at the level of P < 0.05. The prognostic factor was evaluated by the Cox proportional hazards model. RESULTS Compared with the continuously normal-level groups, the CEA [HN] group was significantly correlated to tumor size (P = 0.011), and the CYFRA 21-1 [HN] group was significantly correlated to tumor type and pathological TNM in addition to tumor size. Five-year survivals were significantly lower (P = 0.004) in the CEA [HH] group (67.3%) and the CEA [HN] group (86.5%) than in the CEA [NN] group (85.7%) and were significantly lower (P < 0.001) in the CYFRA 21-1 [HH] group (47.2%) and the CYFRA 21-1 [HN] group (70.1%) than in the CYFRA 21-1 [NN] group (90.1%). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that tumor size (21-50 mm), CEA [HH], and CYFRA 21-1 [HH] were independent unfavorable prognostic factors for overall survival (OS), whereas tumor size (21-50 mm), CEA [HH], CYFRA 21-1 [HN], and CYFRA 21-1 [HH] were independent significant prognostic factors for progression-free survival (PFS). CONCLUSION Patients with a persistently high serum CEA or CYFRA 21-1 before and after surgery had shortest OS and PFS. These patients had worst prognosis. Adjuvant chemotherapy was likely to improve survival for these patients.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can cause HBV-related cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. At present, a hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) blood test is the primary clinical and diagnostic marker for the identification of a chronic HBV infection. In the current study, we isolated a novel HBV mutant from a chronic HBV patient, capable of causing a false negative test result for most (7 of 8) commercial HBsAg ELISA kits. DNA sequencing of the HBsAg region of this HBV mutant revealed two novel mutation sites that resulted in a Thr-to-Met substitution at amino acid (aa) position 118 and a Lys to Asn substitution at aa position 122 of HBsAg. Moreover, a mutagenesis assay showed that the aa118 (Thr to Met) mutation was the leading cause of the false negative results from the HBsAg ELISA tests. The false negative result was restored, in that the mutation was correctly detected, when the Thr at aa position 118 of this mutated HBsAg was reconstituted. In conclusion, our study revealed a novel aa118 Met mutation of HBsAg HBV that will benefit the future development of HBV diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the characteristics on demographical, spatial distribution and transmission mode of HIV infections among 50-year-old population. METHODS Related information on demography, spatial distribution, high risk behavioral and history of HIV infections among 50-year-old population were collected and analyzed. Possible time of infection based on their first CD4 testing results right after the HIV diagnoses, was estimated. RESULTS Since 2008, the number of new HIV/AIDS cases among the over-50-year-olds was reported increasing annually. The number of aged 50 and above in 2014 was 4.2 times than the number in 2008. 50-year-old or older population were infected mainly through heterosexual behavior (88.0%). Among these cases, 83.9% self-reported as having histories on extramarital sex intercourse and the number was increasing yearly. Among male cases who admitted as having heterosexual experience, 95.1% of them reported as having histories of extramarital sex intercourse while 53.4% of the female cases reported as having the same experiences. 46.6% of spouses of the females or with fixed partners were HIV positive. Through estimating the time of infection and the time interval between infection and diagnosis, we found that the proportion was 15.5%, from infection to diagnosis as 3 years among the 50 and older age groups, but the proportion of 8 years from infection to diagnosis was 43.6%. We estimated that 66.5% of the new HIV cases who were at age 50 and over, were infected when they were at that age span. The average time from infection and being tested was (6.8 ± 2.7) years. CONCLUSION The increasing number of being diagnosed on HIV among the 50-year-olds population might be related to both high risk exposure and belated diagnoses among this population, calling for the necessity of deriving the sources of HIV infection and tailoring the HIV prevention strategies in this population.

Abstract
Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), a ubiquitous contaminant, has been used in various industrial applications. Currently few studies have documented the effects of chronic PFOS exposure on lipid metabolism, especially in aquatic organisms. The present study defined the effects of chronic exposure to low level of PFOS on lipid metabolism in F0 adult zebrafish and F1 offspring. Our findings revealed a severe fatty degeneration in the liver of F0 males treated with 0.5 μM PFOS and significant ultrastructure changes associated with substance transport or metabolism in liver and intestines (abnormal mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum, disordered arrangement of inner microvilli within intracellular canaliculus). To address the potential trans-generational effects of PFOS exposure, the early gene expression related to lipid metabolism was measured by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction in F1 derived from chronically exposed parental fish. The results indicated that lepa (leptin α), kiss1 (kisspeptins), xdh (xanthine dehydrogenases), and insr (insulin receptor) were significantly upregulated in F1 while dgat1b (diacylglycerol O-acyltransferase), hb9 (motor neuron/pancreas homeobox), and Apoa1 (apolipoprotein A-I) were downregulated. These findings provided evidence that PFOS chronic exposure adversely impacts lipid metabolism in both F0 and F1 and demonstrated the validity of using zebrafish as an alternative model for PFOS chronic toxicity screening.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of dementia. This study investigated the global connectivity patterns in the brains of patients with type 2 diabetes by using a functional MR imaging technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty patients and 43 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional imaging in a 3T MR imaging unit. Degree centrality, a commonly used measurement of global connectivity, was computed for a full-brain exploration of the regions influenced by type 2 diabetes. We then examined the functional connectivity of each region by using the seed-based approach. Finally, voxelwise correlation analyses were performed to explore the relationship among the connectivity changes, cognitive performance, and diabetes-related variables. RESULTS Patients exhibited decreased degree centrality in the left lingual gyrus and increased centrality in the right insula and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (corrected P < .05). The occipital network anchored in the lingual gyrus showed extensively reduced connectivity, while the network connectivity of the insula and cingulate cortex (mostly included in the salience network) was significantly elevated (corrected P < .05). Correlational analyses revealed that in the diabetic group, impaired visual memory and executive function performance were correlated with occipital hypoconnectivity, while higher fasting plasma glucose levels and better executive functioning were related to anterior cingulate cortex hyperconnectivity (all corrected P values < .05). Similar effects were not detected in the controls. CONCLUSIONS This preliminary study shows that network connectivity is altered in patients with type 2 diabetes, which may provide critical insight into the neural substrate of diabetes-related cognitive decline.

Abstract
PURPOSE We aim to investigate the correlation of HER2 expression with liver metastasis and the impact of HER2 status and trastuzumab therapy on the prognosis of gastric cancer with liver metastasis (GCLM) patients. METHODS This prospective observational study was carried out in Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, from January 2012 to June 2015. HER2 status and baseline characteristics were collected from the patient record. GCLM patients were divided into three groups according to HER2 status and trastuzumab therapy. RESULTS A total of 290 patients were included, and94 patients were diagnosed with liver metastasis. The HER2 positivity was 37.2 % (35/94) in GCLM patients and 21 % (61/290) in the overall GC patients. Among 94 GCLM patients, 28 HER2-positive patients received trastuzumab-based therapy (group A), 7 HER2-positive patients received chemotherapy alone (group B) and the other 59 patients were HER2 negative (group C). The median progression-free survival (PFS) for groups A, B and C was 7.83, 6.30 and 5.33 months, respectively (P = 0.007). The median overall survival (OS) for groups A, B and C was 12.00, 10.47 and 8.67 months, respectively (P = 0.056). Further Cox analysis showed that there was no significant difference in OS (P = 0.917) and PFS (P = 0.456) between group B and C. CONCLUSIONS HER2 positivity was higher in GCLM patients. HER2 status itself was not an independent prognostic factor in GCLM patients. Trastuzumab-based therapy could significantly improve survival in HER2-positive GCLM patients.

Abstract
CdZnTe (CZT) has made a significant impact as a material for room-temperature nuclear-radiation detectors due to its potential impact in applications related to nonproliferation, homeland security, medical imaging, and gamma-ray telescopes. In all such applications, common metals, such as gold, platinum and indium, have been used as electrodes for fabricating the detectors. Because of the large mismatch in the thermal-expansion coefficient between the metal contacts and CZT, the contacts can undergo stress and mechanical degradation, which is the main cause for device instability over the long term. Here, we report for the first time on our use of Al-doped ZnO as the preferred electrode for such detectors. The material was selected because of its better contact properties compared to those of the metals commonly used today. Comparisons were conducted for the detector properties using different contacts, and improvements in the performances of ZnO:Al-coated detectors are described in this paper. These studies show that Al:ZnO contacts to CZT radiation detectors offer the potential of becoming a transformative replacement for the common metallic contacts due to the dramatic improvements in the performance of detectors and improved long-term stability.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study was designed to investigate the association of circadian gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with the risk of osteoporosis. We found that the rs3781638 GG genotype was positively associated with osteoporosis prevalence in females, whereas the rs2292910 AC genotype was negatively associated with osteoporosis prevalence in a geriatric cohort. INTRODUCTION Studies have shown that disruption of endogenous circadian rhythms may increase the risk of developing type II diabetes and obesity, which are reportedly associated with osteoporosis (OP). Thus, abnormalities of circadian genes may indirectly induce OP. Here, we investigated the association of OP with 14 SNPs located in seven circadian genes. METHODS The research subjects, geriatric residents of Shanghai Minhang, China, diagnosed with OP (N = 171) or osteopenia (N = 226) or without specific diseases (N = 200), were genotyped for 14 genetic variants of circadian genes by competitive allele-specific polymerase chain reaction. The prevalence of polymorphisms among the subject groups and the association between the SNPs and osteoporosis were investigated. RESULTS Among the 14 genotyped SNPs, we found an association between the CRY2 gene rs2292910 SNP and osteoporosis (r = -0.082, p = 0.045) in the geriatric cohort. We found a decreased risk between cryptochrome 2 rs2292910 and OP (A/C odds ratio = 0.647, p = 0.044) but an increased risk between MTNR1B rs3781638 and OP (G/G odds ratio = 2.058, p = 0.044). CONCLUSION For the first time, we show that Cry 2 rs2292910 and MTNR1B rs3781638 are associated with osteoporosis in a Chinese geriatric cohort. Therefore, targeting the abnormalities of the CRY2 and MTNR1B genes may be a potential strategy to treat and/or to prevent osteoporosis.

Abstract
Activin A (Act A), a member of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily, is an early gene in response to cerebral ischemia. Growing evidences confirm the neuroprotective effect of Act A in ischemic injury through Act A/Smads signal activation. In this process, regulation networks are involved in modulating the outcomes of Smads signaling. Among these regulators, crosstalk between c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and Smads signaling has been found in the TGF-β induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition. However, in neural ischemia, the speculative regulation between JNK and Act A/Smads signaling pathways has not been clarified. To explore this issue, an Oxygen Glucose Deprivation (OGD) model was introduced to nerve-like PC12 cells. We found that JNK signal activation occurred at the early time of OGD injury (1 h). Act A administration suppressed JNK phosphorylation. In addition, JNK inhibition could elevate the strength of Smads signaling and attenuate neural apoptosis after OGD injury. Our results indicated a negative regulation effect of JNK on Smads signaling in ischemic injury. Taken together, JNK, as a critical site for neural apoptosis and negative regulator for Act A/Smads signaling, was presumed to be a molecular therapeutic target for ischemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the characteristics and factors affecting the recurrence in esophageal cancer within the first year after esophagectomy. METHODS We reviewed retrospectively the clinical and follow-up data of 320 patients who underwent surgical treatment from April 2009 to April 2013 in Sichuan Provincial Cancer Hospital. RESULTS 72 cases (72/320, 22.5%) had tumor recurrence within the first year after surgery. The average recurrence time was 6.89±3.53 months and the median recurrence time was 6.02 months. Univariate analysis showed that T stage, N stage, G grade, and pathological stage are related to the recurrence (P<0.05 for all). Logistic regression analysis showed that pathological stage is an independent risk factor for recurrence (P=0.002). There were 46 cases (46/72, 63.9%) of local recurrence and 26 cases (26/72, 36.1%) of distant metastasis. Among the 46 cases of local recurrence, 27 cases (27/46, 58.7%) had upper mediastinal lymph node metastasis. Among the 26 cases of distant metastasis, there were 11 cases (11/26, 42.3%) of pulmonary metastasis. Among the 72 cases of recurrence, the average number of dissected lymph nodes and involved nodes were 29.40±11.41 and 4.37±5.65, respectively, in patients with distant metastasis, and 21.18±10.37 and 1.91±2.14, respectively, in patients with local recurrence. Both the number of dissected and involved lymph nodes were significantly higher in the patients with distant metastasis (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Lymph node metastasis is the most common pattern of recent relapse after esophagectomy, and pathological stage is an independent risk factor for recurrence within the first year after surgery. Standardized lymph node dissection and rational treatment strategy is the key measures to reduce early recurrence of esophageal cancer.

Abstract
We present evidence that high temperature CVD growth of SWNTs under conditions of continuous spinning of macroscopic fibers leads to an inherent predominance of high chiral angle CNTs, peaking at the armchair end. Raman, UV-vis-NIR absorption, and photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements show the prevalence of metallic SWNTs. The complete chiral angle distribution is obtained by electron diffraction of over 390 CNTs. It is biased towards high chiral angles and peaks at the armchair end (30°), in good agreement with the established atomistic models for SWNT growth from a liquid catalyst. Based on the Fe-C-S constituent binary and ternary phase diagrams, thermodynamic calculations of phase compositions from fast cooling and experimental evidence of a post-synthesis catalyst, the proposed thermodynamic path of the catalyst is to form a solid FCC Fe core and a liquid Fe-S shell. S in the outer liquid shell first stabilizes the edge of the nascent CNT, but once a graphitic wall forms it is rejected due to the high interfacial energy of the Fe-C-S alloy.

Abstract
Baseline holder (BLH) circuits are used widely to stabilize the analog output of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for high-count-rate applications. The careful design of BLH circuits is vital to the overall stability of the analog-signal-processing chain in ASICs. Recently, we observed self-triggered fluctuations in an ASIC in which the shaping circuits have a BLH circuit in the feedback loop. In fact, further investigations showed that methods of enhancing small-signal stabilities cause an even worse situation. To resolve this problem, we used large-signal analyses to study the circuit's stability. We found that a relatively small gain for the error amplifier and a small current in the non-linear stage of the BLH are required to enhance stability in large-signal analysis, which will compromise the properties of the BLH. These findings were verified by SPICE simulations. In this paper, we present our detailed analysis of the BLH circuits, and propose an improved version of them that have only minimal self-triggered fluctuations. We summarize the design considerations both for the stability and the properties of the BLH circuits.

Abstract
A 58-year-old male was scheduled to undergo radical gastrectomy for cancer under general anesthesia. The patient developed agitation and irregular breathing after receiving a single dose of atropine (0.5 mg) to treat bradycardia immediately prior to induction of anesthesia. Within 5 min after the atropine injection, the patient became unresponsive with facial flushing and diaphoresis. When a drop in oxygen saturation was observed, a laryngeal mask airway was inserted after administering a small bolus dose of propofol (80 mg) and the patient was ventilated with 100% oxygen. Physostigmine was not administered because of the relatively low dose of atropine and the fact that his symptoms were not totally consistent with central anticholinergic syndrome (CAS). The differential diagnosis at the time also included an acute cardiovascular event and an idiosyncratic reaction to atropine. The patient fully recovered within 80 min from this highly unusual reaction to a single 0.5 mg IV dose of atropine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the clinical efficacy of systemic chemotherapy combined with intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion in advanced gastric cancer patients with malignant ascites. PATIENTS AND METHODS Forty-eight gastric cancer patients with malignant ascites who were admitted to our hospital were selected and randomly divided into the hyperthermic perfusion and control groups. The control group only received systemic chemotherapy, and the hyperthermic perfusion group received systemic chemotherapy combined with intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemoperfusion. The therapeutic efficacy, the survival time and the associated toxicity were determined for the two groups. RESULTS The efficacy was significantly higher in the hyperthermic perfusion group (85.7%) than in the control group (30.0%) (P 0.05). The median progression-free survival (PFS) was significantly longer in the hyperthermic perfusion group (12 months) compared with the control group (6 months) (P < 0.05). The median overall survival (OS) was significantly longer in the hyperthermic perfusion group (21 months) compared with the control group (9 months) (P < 0.05). There was a significantly higher 1-year survival rate in the hyperthermic perfusion group (89.3%) than in the control group (36.4%) (P < 0.05); however, there was no significant difference in the 3-year survival rate (10.7% vs. 10.0%). The Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) score in the hyperthermic perfusion group increased significantly from 62.8 ± 1.84 to 74.3 ± 5.0 after hyperthermic chemoperfusion (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Systemic chemotherapy combined with intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion exhibited significant clinical efficacy in advanced gastric cancer patients with malignant ascites, helped control ascites, improved the quality of life and extended PFS and OS. This treatment regimen is worth promoting.

Abstract
The defect of esophagus after surgical excision in patients is usually replaced by autologous stomach, jejunum, or colon. The operation brings severe trauma and complications. Using artificial esophagus to replace the defect in situ can reduce the operative trauma, simplify the operative procedures, and decrease the influence to digestive function. A variety of experiments have been designed for developing a practical artificial esophagus. Nevertheless, a safe and reliable artificial esophagus is not yet available. The objective is to evaluate the possibility of the artificial esophagus made of non-degradable polyurethane materials being used in reconstruction of the segmental defect of cervical esophagus in beagles, observe the regeneration of esophageal tissue, and gather experience for future study. The cervical esophageal defects in 13 beagles were designed to 2-cm long and were constructed by the artificial esophagus made of non-degradable polyurethane materials. Nutrition supports were given after the operation. The operative mortality, anastomotic leakage, migration of artificial esophagus, and dysphagia were followed up. The regeneration of the esophageal tissues was evaluated by histopathology and immunohistochemical labeled streptavidin-biotin method. The surgical procedures were successfully completed in all beagles, and 12-month follow-ups were done. Only one beagle died of severe infection, and all others survived until being killed. The anastomotic leakage occurred in nine beagles, most of them (8/9) were cured after supportive therapy. The migration of artificial esophagus occurred in all 12 surviving beagles, and one artificial esophagus stayed in situ after migration. All 12 surviving beagles showed dysphagia with taking only fluid or soft food. No beagle died of malnutrition. The neo-esophagus was composed of granulation tissue, and the inner surface was covered by epithelium in 2-3 months completely. But the inner surface of neo-esophagus with artificial esophagus staying in situ after migration was not covered by epithelium, and the granulation tissue was infiltrated by a great deal of inflammatory cells. Antibodies against cytokeratin were positively expressed in epithelium of neo-esophagus. Up to 12 months after operation, antibodies against smooth muscle actin and desmin were both negatively expressed in neo-esophagus. The artificial esophagus made of non-degradable polyurethane reconstructing cervical esophageal defect is practicable. Although there are some problems, including anastomotic leakage, migration, and dysphagia, they are not lethal following good supportive therapy. The esophageal epithelium can regenerate with the supporting role of artificial esophagus. In the future, deformable artificial esophagus should be improved, and a much longer follow-up will be performed to evaluate whether the esophageal gland and skeletal muscle can regenerate.

Anatomical features of the forelimb of yak resemble those of hindlimb, including hoof periphery, hoof coronal, hoof wall, hoof sole, and hoof sphere. The forelimb and hindlimb are almost the same in histological structure. The epidermis comprised all 5 strata: stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum and stratum basale. The papillary layers and dermal lamellae contained a variable amount of capillary as well as collagen and elastic fibres. Many venules and arteriovenous anastomosis were distributed among the reticular layer. Subcutaneous tissue was composed of rich adipose and connective tissue in hoof periphery, hoof coronal, and, especially, hoof sphere. Major arteria in forelimb of yak include arteria digitalis palmaris communis III and arteriae digitales palmares propriae III and IV axialis. Those in hindlimb include arteria digitalis plantaris communis III and arteria digitalis plantaris propria III and IV axialis. Our findings highlight the main morphological features of yak and provide a morphological basis useful to researchers using yak hoof.
