Abstract
The overall efficacy of platinum based drugs is limited by metabolic deactivation through covalent drug-protein binding. In this study the factors affecting cytotoxicity in the presence of glutathione, human serum albumin (HSA) and whole serum binding with cisplatin, BBR3464, and TriplatinNC, a "noncovalent" derivative of BBR3464, were investigated. Upon treatment with buthionine sulfoximine (BSO), to reduce cellular glutathione levels, cisplatin and BBR3464-induced apoptosis was augmented whereas TriplatinNC-induced cytotoxicity was unaltered. Treatment of A2780 ovarian carcinoma cells with HSA-bound cisplatin (cisplatin/HSA) and cisplatin preincubated with whole serum showed dramatic decreases in cytotoxicity, cellular accumulation, and DNA adduct formation compared to treatment with cisplatin alone. Similar effects are seen with BBR3464. In contrast, TriplatinNC, the HSA-bound derivative (TriplatinNC/HSA), and TriplatinNC pretreated with whole serum retained identical cytotoxic profiles and equal levels of cellular accumulation at all time points. Confocal microscopy of both TriplatinNC-NBD, a fluorescent derivative of TriplatinNC, and TriplatinNC-NBD/HSA showed nuclear/nucleolar localization patterns, distinctly different from the lysosomal localization pattern seen with HSA. Cisplatin-NBD, a fluorescent derivative of cisplatin, was shown to accumulate in the nucleus and throughout the cytoplasm while the localization of cisplatin-NBD/HSA was limited to lysosomal regions of the cytoplasm. The results suggest that TriplatinNC can avoid high levels of metabolic deactivation currently seen with clinical platinum chemotherapeutics, and therefore retain a unique cytotoxic profile after cellular administration.

Abstract
In this work, we demonstrate experimentally the use of an array of gold nanodisks on functionalized silicon for chemosensing purposes. The metallic nanostructures are designed to display a very strong plasmonic resonance in the infrared regime, which results in highly sensitive sensing. Unlike usual experiments which are based on the functionalization of the metal surface, we functionalized here the silicon substrate. This silicon surface was modified chemically by buildup of an organosilane self-assembled monolayer (SAM) containing isocyanate as functional group. These groups allow for an easy surface regeneration by simple heating, thanks to the thermally reversible interaction isocyanate-analyte, which allows the cyclic use of the sensor. The technique showed a high sensitivity to surface binding events in gas and allowed the surface regeneration by heating of the sensor at 150 °C. A relative wavelength shift ∆λ(max)λ(0)=0.027 was obtained when the saturation level was reached.

Abstract
Infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria are a serious problem and is associated with high mortality. Among them, we should highlight those caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Primary bacteremia, catheter-related bloodstream infections and constitute the main presentations. Vancomycin has traditionally been the treatment of choice for these infections, but its activity is not satisfactory especially in cases of MRSA with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) > 1 mg/L. Daptomycin is a lipopeptide antibiotic active against Gram-positive bacteria including MRSA and glycopeptide-resistant Enterococcus spp.It is worth mentioning that daptomycin is rapidly bactericidal against methicillin-sensitive S. aureus, more potent than vancomycin and at least as active as isoxazole penicillins. This article discusses the role of this antibiotic in the empirical treatment of infections and directed by Gram-positive bacteria affecting critically ill patients.

Abstract
We study the reflection properties of squeezing devices based on transformation optics. An analytical expression for the angle-dependent reflection coefficient of a generic three-dimensional squeezer is derived. In contrast with previous studies, we find that there exist several conditions that guarantee no reflections so it is possible to build transformation-optics-based reflectionless squeezers. Moreover, it is shown that the design of antireflective coatings for the non-reflectionless case can be reduced to matching the impedance between two dielectrics. We illustrate the potential of these devices by proposing two applications in which a reflectionless squeezer is the key element: an ultra-short perfect coupler for high-index nanophotonic waveguides and a completely flat reflectionless hyperlens. We also apply our theory to the coupling of two metallic waveguides with different cross-section. Finally, we show how the studied devices can be implemented with non-magnetic isotropic materials by using a quasi-conformal mapping technique.

Abstract
The mechanism of antimalarial action of [Au(CQ)(PPh(3))]PF(6) (1), which is active in vitro against CQ-resistant P. falciparum and in vivo against P. berghei, has been investigated in relation to hemozoin formation and DNA as possible important targets. Complex 1 interacts with heme and inhibits β-hematin formation both in aqueous medium and near water/n-octanol interfaces at pH ~5 to a greater extent than chloroquine diphosphate (CQDP) or other known metal-based antimalarial agents; the higher inhibition activity is probably related to the higher lipophilicity observed for 1 through partition coefficient measurements at low pH, with respect to CQDP. The interactions of complex 1 with DNA were explored using spectrophotometric and fluorimetric titrations, circular dichroism spectroscopy, viscosity and melting point studies, as well as electrophoresis and covalent binding assays. The experimental data indicate that complex 1 interacts with DNA predominantly by intercalation and electrostatic association of the CQ moiety, similarly to free CQDP, while no covalent metal-DNA binding seems to take place. The most likely antimalarial mechanism for complex 1 is thus heme aggregation inhibition; the high activities observed against resistant parasites are probably due to the structural modification of CQ introduced by the presence of the gold-triphenylphosphine fragment, together with the enhanced lipophilic character.

Abstract
AbstractTextures of calcite crystals from ostrich (Struthio camelus) eggshells were examined with X ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), and the thermal stability by thermal expansion analysis (TEA). Results showed that textures vary through the thickness of the eggshell and that expansion properties and thermal behaviour are unusual. Crystals from ostrich eggshell are arranged in two main configurations or layers; the outer layer with the c-axis of crystals oriented perpendicular to the eggshell surface and the inner layer with the c-axes of the crystals arranged almost parallel to eggshell surface; thermal expansion analysis show high stability through a wide range of temperatures until a steep growth near 450-460°C. These results show that the manipulation of crystal texture and properties is under biological control and a better understanding of this biological phenomenon will provide more and better data for improving new synthetic composite materials.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pelvic exenteration (PE) remains one of the most mutilating surgical procedures with important postoperative morbidity. Laparoscopic approach has emerged in an attempt to reduce postoperative complications. The aim of the present study was to compare outcomes between laparoscopic pelvic exenteration combined with a vaginal or perineal approach, versus classical approach. METHODS A cohort study was performed by identifying patients who underwent laparoscopic pelvic exenteration, and retrospectively comparing data with open cases from the same period of time, from 2000 to 2008. RESULTS Fourteen patients underwent laparoscopic PE and 29 patients underwent an open exenterative procedure. All patients except one (97.6%) had received prior radiotherapy. Eighteen patients (41.9%) underwent total PE, 17 anterior PE (39.5%), and 8 posterior PE (18.6%). Urinary diversion (UD) technique consisted of 24 Miami pouch (68.6%), 9 Bricker diversion (25.7%), 1 Kock pouch (2.9%), and 1 ureterostomy (2.9%). Most frequent postoperative complications were related to the urinary diversion (45%) and bowel reconstruction (27.9%). Median estimated blood loss for the laparoscopy and laparotomy group was 400 ml (range 200-700 ml) and 875 ml (range 200-1600 ml), respectively. Transfusion rate was also significantly higher in the laparotomy group. Operative time, margin status, length of hospital stay, operative and postoperative morbidity, and disease and overall survival were not significantly different between both groups. CONCLUSIONS Laparoscopic PE is feasible with curative intent to selected patients. Potential postoperative advantages of laparoscopic approach when compared to classical approach, oncological safety of the procedure, and QOL considerations need to be further investigated.

Abstract
The interactions of π-arene-Ru(II)-chloroquine complexes with human serum albumin (HSA), apotransferrin and holotransferrin have been studied by circular dichroism (CD) and UV-Visible spectroscopies, together with isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The data for [Ru(η(6)-p-cymene)(CQ)(H(2)O)Cl]PF(6) (1), [Ru(η(6)-benzene)(CQ)(H(2)O)Cl]PF(6) (2), [Ru(η(6)-p-cymene)(CQ)(H(2)O)(2)][PF(6)](2) (3), [Ru(η(6)-p-cymene)(CQ)(en)][PF(6)](2) (4), [Ru(η(6)-p-cymene)(η(6)-CQDP)][BF(4)](2) (5) (CQ: chloroquine; DP: diphosphate; en: ethylenediamine), in comparison with CQDP and [Ru(η(6)-p-cymene)(en)Cl][PF(6)] (6) as controls demonstrate that 1, 2, 3, and 5, which contain exchangeable ligands, bind to HSA and to apotransferrin in a covalent manner. The interaction did not affect the α-helical content in apotransferrin but resulted in a loss of this type of structure in HSA. The binding was reversed in both cases by a decrease in pH and in the case of the Ru-HSA adducts, also by addition of chelating agents. A weaker interaction between complexes 4 and 6 and HSA was measured by ITC but was not detectable spectroscopically. No interactions were observed for complexes 4 and 6 with apotransferrin or for CQDP with either protein. The combined results suggest that the arene-Ru(II)-chloroquine complexes, known to be active against resistant malaria and several lines of cancer cells, also display a good transport behavior that makes them good candidates for drug development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neutrophil defensins, originally identified as broad-spectrum antimicrobial peptides, have been implicated in the regulation of inflammatory and immunological processes. OBJECTIVES To investigate whether the in vitro challenge of neutrophils from patients with bronchial asthma with allergens stimulated the release of alpha-defensins and whether levels released were dependent on lung infections. METHOD The neutrophils were cultivated with different agonists and the concentration of alpha-defensin in cell-free supernatant was measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS Neutrophils from allergic patients released alpha-defensins via an allergen-dependent mechanism. Our results indicate that the in vitro activation of neutrophils is highly allergen-specific. In this context, allergens other than those which produced clinical symptoms did not elicit alpha-defensin release, and allergens had no effect on neutrophils from healthy donors. However, neutrophils from both allergic patients and healthy controls were able to release alpha-defensins upon treatment with PMA. In the allergen-stimulated neutrophils, cells from asthmatic patients stimulated with a sensitizing allergen showed a significantly higher production of alpha-defensin under respiratory tract infection than cells from the same patients without such an infection. CONCLUSION Neutrophils from allergic patients release alpha-defensins via an allergen-dependent mechanism.

Abstract
By exploiting the concept of internal surface plasmon polariton (I-SPP) resonances, which appear at nonsingle metallic film stacks, we have designed a metamaterial showing a negative effective index within a large frequency bandwidth. The designed structure consists of an arrangement of several fishnet layers. By properly adjusting the lattice and the thickness of the dielectric slab of the fishnet, an I-SPP mode can be excited at a certain frequency, giving rise to a negative permeability. Thus, when combining several fishnet layers, each one configured to excite an I-SPP at a slightly different frequency, the coupling among the fishnet layers will cause a plasmon hybridization effect that enables us to extend the negative-index bandwidth.

Abstract
Aiming to detect the stage of gestation where dynamical changes of the RR fluctuations may occur, we assessed short-term fluctuations of low risk pregnant women. Ninety six, 10min ECG recordings were collected along gestation (7 to 39 weeks). Corresponding RR fluctuations series were analysed to obtain the RMSSD, α(1), α(1(mag)) and α(1(sign)) parameters. Four groups covering first, second and last trimesters of gestation were conformed. No significant changes in α(1), which was close to unit, and α(1(sign)) among gestational groups were identified. But, in accordance with previous findings, we did find a significant reduction of RMSSD along gestation, and significant short-term changes that indicate a higher degree of nonlinearity after about 26 weeks of gestation (α(1(mag))>0.5)). These results suggest that the short-term heart rate dynamics of low risk pregnant women do not become compromised during gestation, despite the increased haemodynamic demands and other ongoing adaptations. Yet the complexity of the mechanisms involved in the cardiac regulation of pregnant women does seem to increase from mid-pregnancy, possibly owing to new short-term control influences or to modifications regardless the strength of the regulatory interactions.

Abstract
Adrenomedullin (AM) and its binding protein, complement factor H (FH), are expressed throughout the brain. In this study we used a brain-specific conditional knockout for AM and a complete knockout for FH to investigate the effect of these molecules on the pathophysiology of stroke. Following 48 h of middle cerebral artery permanent occlusion, there was a statistically significant infarct size increase in animals lacking AM when compared to their wild type littermates. In contrast, lack of FH did not affect infarct volume. To investigate some of the mechanisms by which lack of AM may augment brain damage, markers of nitrosative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy were studied at the mRNA and protein levels. There was a significant increase of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9), fractin, and Beclin-1 in the peri-infarct area of AM-deficient mice when compared to their wild type counterparts and to contralateral and sham-operated controls. These data suggest that AM exerts a neuroprotective action in the brain and that this protection may be mediated by regulation of iNOS, matrix metalloproteases, and inflammatory mediators. In the future, substances that increase AM actions in the central nervous system may be used as potential neuroprotective agents in stroke.

Abstract
The complexes [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(CQ)Cl(2)] (1), [Ru(eta(6)-benzene)(CQ)Cl(2)] (2), [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(CQ)(H(2)O)(2)][BF(4)](2) (3), [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(en)(CQ)][PF(6)](2) (4), [Ru(eta(6)-p-cymene)(eta(6)-CQDP)][BF(4)](2) (5) (CQ = chloroquine base; CQDP = chloroquine diphosphate; en = ethylenediamine) interact with DNA to a comparable extent to that of CQ and in analogous intercalative manner with no evidence for any direct contribution of the metal, as shown by spectrophotometric and fluorimetric titrations, thermal denaturation measurements, circular dichroism spectroscopy and electrophoresis mobility shift assays. Complexes 1-5 induced cytotoxicity in Jurkat and SUP-T1 cancer cells primarily via apoptosis. Despite the similarities in the DNA binding behavior of complexes 1-5 with those of CQ the antitumor properties of the metal drugs do not correlate with those of CQ, indicating that DNA is not the principal target in the mechanism of cytotoxicity of these compounds. Importantly, the Ru-CQ complexes are generally less toxic toward normal mouse splenocytes and human foreskin fibroblast cells than the standard antimalarial drug CQDP and therefore this type of compound shows promise for drug development.

Abstract
The protection of livestock against Culicoides species (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) using physical barriers or chemically treated barriers is difficult owing to the small size of these biting midges and animal welfare concerns associated with the reduction of air flow. Culicoides imicola Kieffer is the main bluetongue virus vector in the Mediterranean basin, including the southern Iberian peninsula, where livestock is mainly housed in open pens or sheds which offer no physical protection against C. imicola. In this study we assessed the efficacy of surrounding yearling ewe pens with a canvas barrier or a cypermethrin-treated canvas barrier in reducing the entry of Culicoides spp. and C. imicola. Analyses were based on comparisons of Culicoides catches in traps in pens with and without barriers, and in traps located outside pens. Although there was no clear reduction in the abundance of Culicoides other than C. imicola in pens with either barrier, the C. imicola presence was markedly reduced by the insecticide-treated barrier compared with the untreated barrier; the latter did not reduce the abundance of this species in pens. Estimates of the protection conferred against C. imicola by the treated barrier differed depending on whether catch comparisons were based on outside traps or on traps located inside no-barrier pens. The results suggest that the use of insecticide-treated barriers may reduce contact between livestock and C. imicola in open areas or sheds. More research is necessary to assess the degree of protection as a function of barrier height, C. imicola abundance, and the size of the area to be protected.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To estimate the incidence of clinically detected port-site metastases (PSM) in patients with endometrial and cervical cancer treated at two gynecologic oncology services with extensive experience. METHODS All eligible uterine cancer patients laparoscopically staged at Centre Oscar Lambret in Lille and Institut Claudius Regaud in Toulouse, France, were reviewed. MEDLINE database was searched to identify articles on PSM after laparoscopic procedures for cervical and endometrial cancer. RESULTS During the study period, 1216 laparoscopic procedures for uterine cancer were performed. 921 patients underwent laparoscopic staging for cervical cancer and 295 for endometrial cancer. The overall incidence of PSM in our institutions was 0.4% per procedure (5 patients), and the incidence of PSM after laparoscopy for cervical and endometrial cancer was 0.43% and 0.33%, respectively. Excluding patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis, the rate of port-site recurrence in our series lowered to 0.16%, and the rate of isolated PSM to 0%. The median time to the development of PSM was 8 months (range 6-48), the median overall survival from diagnosis for all patients was 26 months (range 7-30), and median survival from recurrence was 5 months (range 1-20). CONCLUSION Although PSM is recognized as a complication of laparoscopy for ovarian cancer. PSM is a rare complication of laparoscopic staging for endometrial and cervical cancer. The majority of patients with PSM presented with associated synchronous disease. The incidence of isolated PSM can be maintained virtually to 0% by an adequate operative technique. We believe that PSM in patients with uterine cancer cannot be used as an argument against laparoscopic staging in uterine cancer.

Abstract
We study numerically and theoretically the optical transmission of nanostructured gold films embedded in dielectric claddings. We show how multiple transmission peaks appear as the claddings thickness increases. These transmission peaks come not only from surface plasmon polariton excitations but also from the excitation of Fabry-Perot modes sustained at the claddings, coupled through the metal, as long as a periodic pattern is milled in the metal film. We propose that this structure could be used as an ultracompact all-optical switch by surrounding the metal film with Kerr nonlinear dielectric layers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The STAT4 gene encodes a transcription factor involved in the signaling pathways of several cytokines, including interleukin-12 (IL-12), the type I interferons, and IL-23. Recently, the association of a STAT4 haplotype marked by rs7574865 with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus was reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of this STAT4 tagging polymorphism in other immune-mediated diseases. METHODS The study group comprised 2,776 consecutively recruited Spanish individuals: 575 with RA, 440 with multiple sclerosis, 700 with inflammatory bowel disease, 311 with type 1 diabetes, and 723 ethnically matched healthy control subjects. The STAT4 polymorphism rs7574865 was genotyped using a predesigned TaqMan assay. Allele and genotype frequencies in patients and control subjects were compared by chi-square test. RESULTS The association of STAT4 polymorphism rs7574865 with RA was validated in patients of Spanish origin (for T versus G, P = 1.2 x 10(-6), odds ratio [OR] 1.59, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.31-1.92), and the association was described for the first time in both clinical forms of inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (for T versus G, P = 0.006, OR 1.29, 95% CI 1.07-1.55), and in type 1 diabetes mellitus (for T versus G, P = 0.008, OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.07-1.71). In contrast, the genotypic distribution of this polymorphism showed no difference between patients with multiple sclerosis and healthy control subjects (for T versus G, P = 0.83, OR 1.02, 95% CI 0.82-1.28). CONCLUSION The STAT4 gene is emerging as a novel common risk factor for diverse complex diseases.

Abstract
Medullar cord compression secondary to osseous plasmacytomas affecting the vertebrae is an oncological emergency. A 75-year-old woman with recurrent osseous plasmacytomas and thoracic spinal cord compression, previously treated with radiotherapy, was successfully treated with bortezomib and dexamethasone. Three years later, when the plasmacytoma and spinal cord compression relapsed, she was retreated with the same therapeutic scheme, achieving a new complete clinical remission. This is the first reported case of an excellent response to the combination of bortezomib and dexamethasone for spinal cord compression due to osseous plasmacytoma.

Abstract
Noroviruses are the most frequent cause of acute gastroenteritis in the community. In Catalonia, it is not clear how this type of viral gastroenteritis is evolving, and the objective of this prospective population-based study was to describe the incidence and epidemiological and clinical features of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis due to norovirus in Catalonia between October 2004 and October 2005. Incidence rates were calculated using the estimated population of Catalonia in 2005. For each outbreak, the mode of transmission, the number of persons affected, demographic variables, clinical presentation, the date and time of onset of symptoms and the duration of symptoms, physician visits and hospitalizations were collected. Sixty viral outbreaks affecting 1791 people were identified, with no distinct seasonality. The mean number of outbreaks per month was 4.6. The global incidence was 24.6 per 100 000 person-years. The incidence was higher in women (25.7 per 100 000 person-years) and in the 5-11 years (52.4 per 100 000 person-years) and > or =65 years (42.4 per 100 000 person-years) age groups. The prevalence of vomiting, abdominal pain and general malaise was higher in children and adolescents, whereas the prevalence of diarrhoea and myalgia was higher in adults. These results suggest that norovirus infection has an important public health impact in Catalonia and that prevention strategies should be designed and implemented.

Abstract
The goal of our study was to discriminate potential genetic differences between humans who are in both endpoints of the sports performance continuum (i.e. world-class endurance vs power athletes). We used DNA-microarray technology that included 36 genetic variants (within 20 different genes) to compare the genetic profile obtained in two cohorts of world-class endurance (N=100) and power male athletes (N=53) of the same ethnic origin. Stepwise multivariate logistic regression showed that the rs1800795 (IL6-174 G/C), rs1208 (NAT2 K268R) and rs2070744 (NOS3-786 T/C) polymorphisms significantly predicted sport performance (model χ(2) =25.3, df=3, P-value <0.001). Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed a significant discriminating accuracy of the model, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.72 (95% confidence interval: 0.66-0.81). The contribution of the studied genetic factors to sports performance was 21.4%. In summary, although an individual's potential for excelling in endurance or power sports can be partly predicted based on specific genetic variants (many of which remain to be identified), the contribution of complex gene-gene interactions, environmental factors and epigenetic mechanisms are also important contributors to the "complex trait" of being an athletic champion. Such trait is likely not reducible to defined genetic polymorphisms.

Abstract
Neurotoxicity is one of the most relevant dose-limiting toxicities of the anticancer drug paclitaxel. It exhibits substantial interindividual variability of unknown molecular basis, and represents one of the major challenges for the improvement of paclitaxel therapy. The extensive variability in paclitaxel clearance and metabolism lead us to investigate the association between polymorphisms in paclitaxel elimination pathway and neurotoxicity. We selected 13 relevant polymorphisms in genes encoding paclitaxel metabolizing enzymes (CYP2C8, CYP3A4 and CYP3A5) and transporters (organic anion transporting polypeptide (OATP) 1B1, OATP1B3 and P-glycoprotein) and genotyped them in 118 Spanish cancer patients treated with paclitaxel. After adjusting for age and treatment schedule, CYP2C8 Haplotype C and CYP3A5*3 were associated with protection (hazard ratio (HR) (per allele)=0.55; 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.34-0.89; P=0.014 and HR (per allele)=0.51; 95%CI=0.30-0.86; and P=0.012, respectively) and CYP2C8*3 with increased risk (HR (per allele)=1.72; 95%CI=1.05-2.82; and P=0.032). In each case, the allele causing increased paclitaxel metabolism was associated with increased neurotoxicity, suggesting an important role for metabolism and hydroxylated paclitaxel metabolites. We estimated the HR per paclitaxel-metabolism increasing allele carried across the three polymorphisms to be HR=1.64 (95% CI=1.26-2.14; P=0.0003). The results for P-glycoprotein were inconclusive, and no associations were observed for the other genes studied. The incorporation of this genetic data in treatment selection could help to reduce neurotoxicity events, thereby individualizing paclitaxel pharmacotherapy. These results warrant validation in independent series.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT Neuroplasticity is a process by which neurons increase their connectivity with other neurons in a stable fashion as a consequence of experience, learning and both sensitive and cognitive stimulation. Different authors have shown a huge process of brain plasticity in blind subjects towards other sensorial areas, mainly auditive and visual ones. From an anatomical standpoint many data show significant differences in blind subjects brains, mainly in visual pathways and structures as a result of lack of activity on those areas. This brings a lesser neuroplasticity and, therefore, a decrease in structural volumes. They have also found differences in subcortical structures volumes related to vision, such as splenium or corpus callosum istmus. METHODOLOGY An adolescent was administered passive tactile stimulation with an 1,500 taxels stimulator. This was carried out daily for an hour, for three months, and stimulation consisted of vertical, horizontal and oblique lines. The results obtained in an adolescent indicate a clear progression of EEG activity from tactile sensory parietal areas to visual occipital ones as stimulation progresses. CONCLUSION Therefore one can speculate if systematic and organized repetition of tactile stimuli in blind subjects leads to a greater neuroplasticity which expands towards occipital areas, largely responsible for human vision.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Genome-wide studies have identified the chromosomal region 16p13 in the susceptibility to type 1 diabetes (T1D) and multiple sclerosis (MS). This region includes the CLEC16A/KIAA0350 gene and an adjacent gene, MHC2TA (MHC class II transactivator), previously associated with susceptibility to MS and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The role of CLEC16A polymorphisms in the pathogenesis of T1D, MS and RA and its relationship with the association reported with a MHC2TA haplotype were investigated. METHODS CLEC16A (rs2903692/rs6498169/rs11074956) polymorphisms were analysed in 435 patients with MS, 316 with T1D and 600 with RA and in 550 ethnically matched controls. The MHC2TA rs3087456G/rs4774C risk haplotype was studied in an independent RA cohort. RESULTS rs2903692 conferred a protective effect on patients with T1D, MS and RA. The described association of rs6498169 with MS was replicated in MS and RA cohorts. The effect of the MHC2TA rs3087456G/rs4774C haplotype on RA susceptibility was confirmed, and the haplotype was found to be in negative linkage disequilibrium with the CLEC16A rs2903692A/rs6498169A haplotype. CONCLUSIONS Associations of CLEC16A polymorphisms with T1D and MS were successfully replicated in a Spanish population. A novel association of rs6498169 with a predisposition to RA was described which is consistent with previous MHC2TA results. These data provide evidence for the influence of variants within this chromosomal region on the development of complex diseases.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of clinical-epidemiological profiles for classifying non-laboratory-confirmed outbreaks of foodborne disease (FBD) in Catalonia between 2002 and 2006 and for elucidating associations among factors contributing to these outbreaks. A total of 275 nonfamily outbreaks were studied, of which 190 (69.1%) were laboratory confirmed and 85 (30.9%) were not. In 176 (92.6%) of laboratory-confirmed outbreaks and 69 (81.2%) of non-laboratory-confirmed outbreaks, information was obtained on contributing factors (P = 0.009). In 72% of non-laboratory-confirmed outbreaks, the etiology was assigned by using clinical-epidemiological profiles; thus, 93% of outbreaks eventually were associated with an etiology. In laboratory-confirmed outbreaks, poor personal hygiene was positively associated with norovirus (odds ratio [OR], 2.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.47 to 4.89; P = 0.0007) and negatively associated with Salmonella and Campylobacter (OR, 0.54; 95% CI, 0.33 to 0.89; P = 0.01), and an unsafe source was positively associated with Salmonella and Campylobacter (OR, 4.07; 95% CI, 1.72 to 10.09; P = 0.001) and negatively associated with norovirus (OR, 0.14; 95% CI, 0.04 to 0.58; P = 0.001). No differences were found among contributing factors associated with outbreaks with a laboratory-confirmed etiology and those associated with outbreaks with an etiology assigned according to the clinical-epidemiological profiles. Clinical-epidemiological profiles are useful for determining what prevention and control strategies are appropriate to the agents involved in each community and for designing outbreak investigations.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the seasonal differences in mineral contents of plants often consumed by wild red deer located in a fenced game estate, south-eastern Spain. Forage plants were sampled throughout 1 year and analysed for macro and trace mineral concentrations. We also offered a cafeteria set of supplemented minerals to assess whether: (i) intake reflected seasonal reductions in plant content of specific minerals; or (ii) intake of mineral supplements responded to increased deer demand of minerals as a result of greater seasonal needs likely arising from lactation, antler growth or skeletal growth.
Although no significant seasonal trend was found in mineral distributions of plants, our study suggested that concentrations of K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Cu and Zn were usually low in plants available to, and consumed by, deer in the study area. In addition, Cu concentration was marginally deficient when compared with the published requirements for other subspecies of red deer. The cafeteria study showed that free-ranging deer had a strong preference for sodium compounds and zinc sulfate, a much weaker attraction to calcium iodate, and no intake in calcium phosphates, Mg and Fe. Consumption of supplemented minerals by deer was maximum in spring and summer and moderate during autumn and winter.
Rather than increasing intake of minerals in response to their content in plants, deer may be responding to increased metabolic requirements during antler growth, late gestation and early lactation. Supplementation of mineral compounds is recommended, particularly in the spring–summer period, when the physiological activity is high.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the interobserver reliability of three-dimensional (3D) volumetric ultrasonography (US) and 2D real-time US in detecting inflammatory and destructive changes in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) wrist and hand. METHODS Two RA patients were selected by a rheumatologist who performed independently a grey-scale and power Doppler (PD) volumetric acquisition at three anatomic sites in their more symptomatic wrist/hand using two identical scanners equipped with 3D volumetric probe. Twelve rheumatologists expert in MSUS were randomly assigned to a US scanner and a patient. In the first part of the study, each group of experts blindly, independently, and consecutively performed a 2D real-time grey-scale and PD US investigation of inflammatory changes and/or bone erosions at the three anatomic sites. In the second part of the study, each group of investigators blindly evaluated the same pathologic changes in the 6 volumes from the patient not scanned by them. RESULTS The kappa values were higher for 3D volumetric US than for 2D US in the detection of synovitis/tenosyno-vitis (0.41 vs. 0.37) and PD signal (0.82 vs 0.45) and in the PD signal grading (0.81 vs. 0.55). CONCLUSION 3D volumetric US may improve the interobserver reliability in RA multicentre studies.

Abstract
To examine the extent of the effect of muscular hypertrophy character in beef of northern-Spanish breeds, animal performance and carcass characteristics of 152 finishing steers from 5 genotypes were studied: 32 yearling bulls from a rustic Asturiana de la Montaña (AM) breed, 96 yearling bulls from Asturiana de los Valles (AV) breed, divided in 3 groups depending on the presence of the gene responsible for double-muscling (i.e., 32 AV mh/mh, 32 AV mh/+, 32 AV +/+), and 24 yearling bulls from AM x AV cross were used. Each genotype was composed of 8 animals per year (4 animals per pen) for 4 yr, except for the AM x AV genotype, which was only evaluated in the last 3 yr of the experiment. All animals were fed indoors with concentrate meal and barley straw ad libitum. Average daily gains in AV animals (1.41 kg/d) were greater (P < 0.01) than in AM (1.12 kg/d), whereas AM x AV were intermediate (1.29 kg/d) to these. No significant differences (P = 0.604) in ADG were found among the 3 AV genotypes. Longer fattening periods (P < 0.001) were taken for AM animals to reach acceptable BW at slaughter. Double-muscled animals (AV mh/mh) were found to have the best feed efficiencies when expressed as G:F (P < 0.001). However, residual feed intake calculated on a daily basis showed a greater efficiency in AV mh/mh and AM than in other genotypes. Carcasses from double-muscled animals had greater BW, yield, conformation and compactness index, and less fat cover than the other genotypes (P < 0.001). Carcasses from AM breed were the lightest and had the worst conformation, whereas those from AM x AV generally presented intermediate characteristics between AV and AM. Double-muscled animals had the greatest LM weight and area. The sixth-rib dissection revealed a greater percentage of muscle (84.6%) and decreased percentages of subcutaneous fat (1.1%), intermuscular fat (4.7%), bone (8.5%), and other tissues (1.2%) in AV mh/mh compared with other genotypes. Water-holding capacity was greatest in AM and least in AV mh/mh. In conclusion, double-muscled AV bulls would provide the greatest economic returns at intensive feeding systems because of their greater efficiency, reduced feeding costs, greater carcass weight and conformation, and greater lean yields, though some LM characteristics (reduced fat content and water-holding capacity) could negatively affect the sensory attributes of the meat compared with other genotypes with greater fatness.

Abstract
Introduction: Ca-125 is secreted by different celomic epitheliums. Serum levels may be increased in malignant diseases, like ovarian cancer but also in other medical conditions, such as pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Methods: From Jan-04 to Dec-06 a retrospective study analyzing Ca-125 levels in serum samples from patients with a diagnosis of pulmonary TB, was performed. These results were compared with those samples obtained from patients with non-TB pulmonary infections. Results: Eighty-nine patients were included in the study, thirty-five with pulmonary TB and 54 with other respiratory infections. In patients with TB, the mean Ca-125 value was 104.9 IU/ml (SD: ± 136.1). In the control group, mean value was 27.1 IU/ml (SD: ±19.7). The optimal cut-off for pulmonary tuberculosis was 32.5 IU/ml (sensitivity: 68.6%, specificity: 77.8%). Pulmonary TB was the only factor associated with a Ca-125 level >32.5. In 10 patients with TB, Ca-125 levels were available ≥ 2 months after starting TB therapy and a decrease during treatment was shown. Conclusions: Ca-125 values increase in patients with pulmonary TB and decline to normal values during treatment. Determination of Ca 125 may be usedin patients with a negative sputum AFB stain.

Abstract
We propose the use of closely packed deep-subwavelength plasmonic coaxial waveguides that support backward propagating modes at visible frequencies, analogous to those in planar metal-insulator-metal geometries, as negative-index metamaterials. We show through simulation that the propagation properties of the metamaterial are determined by the dispersion relation of the constitutive waveguides. The metamaterial is polarization independent, is uniform in the propagation direction, and has a subwavelength character in the transversal directions. The transmission loss through the structure is also analyzed.
