Abstract
A search is performed for the lepton number violating decay B+ → h- μ+ μ+, where h- represents a K- or a π-, using an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) of data collected with the LHCb detector. The decay is forbidden in the standard model but allowed in models with a Majorana neutrino. No signal is observed in either channel and limits of B(B+ → K- μ+ μ+) < 5.4×10(-8) and B(B+ → π- μ+ μ+) < 5.8×10(-8) are set at the 95% confidence level. These improve the previous best limits by factors of 40 and 30, respectively.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕ(s) in the decay B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 108:101803. Abstract
We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ decays, using data collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The decay time distribution of B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ is characterized by the decay widths Γ(H) and Γ(L) of the heavy and light mass eigenstates, respectively, of the B(s)(0) - B(s)(0) system and by a CP-violating phase ϕ(s). In a sample of about 8500 B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ events isolated from 0.37 fb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV, we measure ϕ(s) = 0.15 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.06(syst) rad. We also find an average B(s)(0) decay width Γ(s) ≡ (Γ(L) + Γ(H))/2 = 0.657 ± 0.009(stat) ± 0.008(syst) ps(-1) and a decay width difference ΔΓ(s) ≡ Γ(L) - Γ(H) = 0.123 ± 0.029(stat) ± 0.011(syst) ps(-1). Our measurement is insensitive to the transformation (ϕ(s),ΔΓ(s)) ↦ (π - ϕ(s), -ΔΓ(s)).

Abstract
The neutron-rich nuclei 94,96Kr were studied via projectile Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Level energies of the first excited 2(+) states and their absolute E2 transition strengths to the ground state are determined and discussed in the context of the E(2(1)(+)) and B(E2;2(1)(+)→0(1)(+)) systematics of the krypton chain. Contrary to previously published results no sudden onset of deformation is observed. This experimental result is supported by a new proton-neutron interacting boson model calculation based on the constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach using the microscopic Gogny-D1M energy density functional.

Abstract
Biogas production from renewable resources is an alternative to generate energy and concomitantly save fossil fuels and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. As methanogenesis is a major bottleneck in the biogas process, the determination of the specific activity of methanogenic Archaea can be a good indicator of the process state. A new parameter, the metabolic quotient (MQ), was developed to evaluate the specific activity of methanogens. A standard was created from mesophilic maize-fed fermenters to calculate the expected concentration of methanogens for a given methane productivity at stable process stages. The MQ, the ratio of the predicted to the actual concentration of methanogens, defines their metabolic activity. The MQ was able to indicate methanogenic cell stress metabolism and imminent process failure before conventional chemical parameters. As a further approach, the methanogenic activity was determined by quantification of mRNA transcripts in relation to the mcrA/mrtA-gene, coding for a key enzyme subunit of methanogenesis. The cDNA/DNA ratio reflected the specific actual process activity of the methanogens. As both methods are potent parameters for the early detection of process failure, biogas plant operators may avoid economical losses by their preventive application.

Abstract
The relative abundance of the three decay modes B(0)→D(-)K(+), B(0)→D(-)π(+), and B(s)(0)→D(s)(-)π(+) produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC is determined from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb(-1). The branching fraction of B(0)→D(-)K(+) is found to be B(B(0)→D(-)K(+)) = (2.01 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.14(syst)) × 10(-4). The ratio of fragmentation fractions f(s)/f(d) is determined through the relative abundance of B(s)(0)→D(s)(-)π(+) to B(0)→D(-)K(+) and B(0)→D(-)π(+), leading to f(s)/f(d) = 0.253 ± 0.017 ± 0.017 ± 0.020, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and theoretical, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relation between prenatal cocaine exposure and quality of movement was studied at 4 mo using the Posture and Fine Motor Assessment of Infants (PFMAI-I). METHOD Posture and fine motor scores of 4-month-old infants exposed to cocaine in utero (n = 370) were compared with an unexposed group (n = 533) within the context of gestational age, medical and demographic characteristics, and level of prenatal substance exposure using the PFMAI-I. RESULTS Infants prenatally exposed to cocaine had significantly lower posture scores than infants in the unexposed group. There was no main effect of cocaine exposure on fine motor scores; however, there were independent effects of gestational age at birth on both posture and fine motor scores at 4-mo corrected age. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrate independent contributions of prenatal cocaine exposure and prematurity to risk of motor delay and support the validity of the PFMAI-I as a measure of motor competence in early infancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Germany the number of new tuberculosis incidents continues to decline slightly. Cases of illnesses are often diagnosed late, due to the uncharacteristic course of tuberculosis. The success in environment investigations by health authorities in finding incidents within one infection chain depends on the compliance of patients among other factors. Tuberculosis occurs especially in groups with social disadvantages. In this population segment the identification of contact persons of a patient with infectious tuberculosis presents difficulties. Moreover, identifying the source of infection is frequently not successful. For these reasons, additional infections and sicknesses are caused. The cultural pathogen proof, including type differentiation and resistance testing, continues to be the "gold standard" in tuberculosis diagnostics and is required for the examination of outbreaks. Molecular methods for fine typification of isolated bacterial strains and their subsequent comparison constitute an important tool in the infection epidemiology investigation of incident clustering. OBJECTIVE AND METHOD The objective of this work is the description of a tuberculosis infection chain in Saxony-Anhalt, which was discovered by means of a molecular biological method. The conservative method represents the environment investigations for the expedient selection of contact persons. The investigations always take 2 directions in the process. On the one hand, it is searched for the still unknown source of infection. On the other hand, persons are to be identified, who have been infected before the diagnosis became known. The diagnostics for contact persons includes besides the lung X-ray checkup exam, the Mendel Mantoux tuberculin skin test (THT), sputum tests and the Interferon Gamma (INF-γ) tests (IGRA). In described case, the molecular biological method of spoliogotyping was employed as additional instrument. Therein, fingerprint maps of the patients' tuberculosis strings were created and compared. Infection chains resulting from the environment investigations were thereby secured. RESULTS We report on a tuberculosis outbreak in a district of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, which occurred in the time from June 2007 to May 2010. As result of the environment investigations, an infection chain of 13 ill patients (77% ♂, 23% ♀) was identified. In 11 cases the correlation of the infection chain was proven by spoligotyping (9 ♂, 2 ♀). 2 cases (1 ♂, 1 ♀) without verification of the pathogen cannot be attributed on basis of the epidemiological correlations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Network Neurobehavior Scales (NNNS) at 44 weeks predict motor outcome at 2 years in preterm infants from the Maternal Lifestyles Study (MLS). STUDY DESIGN Data were collected on all preterm infants (<36 weeks) in the MLS who underwent an NNNS at 44 weeks (n = 395) and neurologic examination at 12 to 36 months or Bayley Psychomotor Development Index (PDI) at 24 months (n = 270). Logistic regression analyzed NNNS summary scores associated with cerebral palsy (CP) or PDI <70, while controlling for birth weight =1250 g. RESULTS Eighteen of 395 infants (5%) had CP; 24 of 270 infants (9%) had PDI <70. CP was associated with low quality of movement (odds ratio [OR], 1.95; 95% CI, 1.24-3.06; P = .004) and high lethargy (OR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.01-2.76; P = .045). The model contributed 19% of the variance in CP diagnosis at 12 to 36 months (R(2) = .19, P < .001). Low PDI was associated with low handling (OR, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.12-2.99; P = .017), low quality of movement (OR, 2.16; 95% CI, 1.38-3.38; P = .001), and hypotonia (OR, 1.63; 95% CI, 1.14-2.32; P = .007). The model contributed 26% of the variance in PDI <70 at 24 months (R(2) = 0.26, P < .001). CONCLUSIONS The neurobehavioral profile of under-arousal in 44-week-old preterm infants may predict poor motor outcome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examined the NICU Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) as a predictor of negative medical and behavioral findings at 1 month to 4.5 years of age. METHODS The sample included 1248 mother-infant dyads (42% born at <37 weeks' gestational age [GA]) who were participating in a longitudinal study of the effects of prenatal substance exposure on child development. Mothers were recruited at 4 urban university-based centers and were mostly black and on public assistance. At 1 month of age, infants were tested with the NNNS. Latent profile analysis was conducted on NNNS summary scales to identify discrete behavioral profiles. The validity of the NNNS was examined by using logistic regression to predict prenatal drug exposure and medical and developmental outcomes through 4.5 years of age including adjustment for GA and socioeconomic status. RESULTS Five discrete behavioral profiles were reliably identified; the most extreme negative profile was found in 5.8% of the infants. The profiles showed statistically significant associations with prenatal drug exposure; GA and birth weight; head ultrasound; neurologic and brain disease findings; and abnormal scores on measures of behavior problems, school readiness, and IQ through 4.5 years of age. CONCLUSIONS The NNNS may be useful to identify infant behavioral needs to be targeted in well-infant pediatric care, as well as for referrals to community-based early intervention services.

Low-dose indomethacin after ischemic acute kidney injury prevents downregulation of Oat1/3 and improves renal outcome. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 2009; 297:F1614-21. Abstract
We have previously shown that expression of renal organic anion transporters Oat1 and Oat3 is diminished by prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and that both transporters are downregulated after renal ischemia. Because PGE2 is increased after renal ischemia and is generated by cyclooxygenases (COX), we investigated the effect of the COX inhibitor indomethacin on expression of Oat1/3 after ischemic acute kidney injury (iAKI). iAKI was induced in rats by bilateral clamping of renal arteries for 45 min. Indomethacin (1 mg/kg) was given intraperitoneally as soon as reperfusion started. Sham-treated animals served as controls. Oat1/3 were determined by qPCR and Western blot. PGE2 in blood and urine was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Invasion of monocytes/macrophages was determined. Glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow were determined. All parameters were detected 24 h after ischemia. PAH net secretion, as well as clearance and secretion of PGE2 were calculated. In clamped animals, indomethacin restored expression of Oat1/3, as well as PAH net secretion, PGE2 clearance, or PGE2 secretion. Additionally, indomethacin substantially improved kidney function as measured by glomerular filtration and PAH clearance. Indomethacin did not affect ischemia-induced invasion of monocytes/macrophages. In conclusion, our study indicates that low-dose indomethacin applied after ischemia prevents ischemia-induced downregulation of Oat1/3 during reperfusion and has a substantial protective effect on kidney function after iAKI. The beneficial effect of low-dose indomethacin on renal outcome is likely due to an effect different from inhibition of inflammation. In accordance to the decreased PAH net secretion, renal excretion of an endogenous organic anion (PGE2) is also impaired after ischemia and reperfusion.

Abstract
Although testicular cancers are highly curable malignancies, conventional cisplatin based therapy often causes important toxicities, not often easily manageable. Nephrotoxicity occurs in almost all patients, and is potentialized in patients suffering from renal failure. Monitoring of residual levels of unbound platinum was used to define guidelines for cisplatin administration. Monitoring of cisplatin was initiated in a patient treated for metastatic testicular cancer and acute renal failure. Reduced doses of cisplatin were first administered in conjunction with hemodialysis. Unbound and total platinum levels were determined by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The data found allowed us to adapt and increase sequentially cisplatin doses, accordingly with the renal function. Full regimen doses were eventually administered when useful renal function returned. This simple approach may be useful in monitoring cisplatin administration during acute renal failure.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to address the question of how the stability of a proximal hip fracture determines the fatigue and failure mechanism of an intramedullary implant. To answer this question, mechanical experiments and finite element simulations with two different loading scenarios were conducted. The two load scenarios differed in the mechanical support of the fracture by an artificial bone sleeve, representing the femoral head and neck. The experiments confirmed that an intramedullary nail fails at a lower load in an unstable fracture situation in the proximal femur than in a stable fracture. The nails with an unstable support failed at a load 28 per cent lower than the nails with a stable support by the femoral neck. Hence, the mechanical support of a fracture is crucial to the fatigue failure of an implant. The simulation showed why the fatigue fracture of the nail starts at the aperture of the lag screw. It is the location of the highest von Mises stress, which is the failure criterion for ductile materials.

Abstract
A magnetic system is introduced which consists of three nested rings of permanent magnets of a Halbach dipolar layout and is capable for EPR spectroscopy. Two of the rings can be rotated independently to adjust the magnetic flux in the center and even allow for mechanical field sweeps. The presented prototype achieves a magnetic flux range of 0.0282-0.3013T with a minimal sweep of 0.15mT and homogeneity of about 10(-3). First applications with CW and pulsed Mims ENDOR as well as ESEEM experiments on a sample of a glycine single crystal doped with 1% copper nitrate demonstrate that flux range, sweep accuracy and homogeneity of this prototype is sufficient for EPR experiments on most solid samples. Together with a recently improved design magnets can be build which could serve as compact and easily transportable replacement of standard electromagnets with negligible consumption of power or coolants.

Abstract
RATIONALE The MARAN (Macular Relocation in Age-related Neovascular disease) trial was planned to assess the effectiveness of full macular relocation (MR) in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). DESIGN Randomised, prospective, controlled clinical trial. METHODS Patients suffering from visual loss because of AMD were randomised to either surgery or a control group receiving standard treatment (observation or photodynamic therapy (PDT)). The primary end point was the change of visual acuity (VA) (ETDRS) 52 weeks after randomisation compared with initial VA, and secondary end points included reading performance, contrast sensitivity, stability of fixation, eye-specific quality of life, and the absolute number of letters read correctly at 52 weeks compared with initial examination. RESULTS Owing to early determination, only 28 patients were included in the study. The study did not show a difference between the two groups with respect to the final visual result or any of the secondary outcomes measured. The study was limited by the low recruitment that was, at least in part, attributed to the inherent risks for those patients randomised to the surgical arm of the study as well as to the emerging new treatments for AMD. CONCLUSION The results of the MARAN trial failed to recruit a sufficient number of patients and a superiority of surgery over observation or PDT in patients with exudative AMD was not shown. There was a trend that the reading function was superior after surgery. In the light of the new pharmacological treatments, surgical options such as MR will be an option for only selected cases.
