[Psychopathological symptoms in patients suffering from chronic cephalea with or without fibromyalgia]

INTRODUCTION

The presence of psychopathological symptoms as anxiety and depression in chronic daily headache and in fibromyalgia is common.

AIM

To study whether there are any difference in the psychopathological profile and treatment response between patients with chronic headache and fibromyalgia (CHFM) and patients with chronic headache without fibromyalgia (CH).

PATIENTS AND METHODS

A comprehensive psychological test battery was administered to 30 patients with CH and 30 patients with CHFM, diagnosed by a rheumatologist. We included chronic migraine and chronic tensional headache in CH group. Patients were matched for age and gender. Depression, anxiety and obsession scores, and the profile of psychopathological symptoms (MMPI-2, SCL-90-R) were compared (t-test). Correlations between symptoms and treatment response were examined.

RESULTS

Patients with CHFM showed significant highest scores on hypochondriasis, depression, hysteria, paranoia, psychasthenia and schizophrenia (MMPI-2) and more somatization, obsession and anxiety according to SCL-90-R. A poorer response to treatment was observed in CHFM (17.85%) versus CH (42,85%) group.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with CHFM showed a psychopathological profile with highest scores and symptoms than patients without fibromyalgia. These differences correlated with the therapeutic response.

Molecular effects in H2 scattering from metal surfaces at grazing incidence

Collisions of fast atoms with surfaces at grazing incidence have been recently proposed as a promising new tool to determine surface parameters with unprecedented accuracy. Here we show, by means of classical dynamics calculations performed with first-principles six-dimensional potential energy surfaces for H2/NiAl(110) and H2/Pd(111) that, under grazing incidence conditions, fast light molecular projectiles are also useful to determine sticking probabilities at thermal energies, from the threshold up to the saturation limit. Thus they are the ideal complement to traditional experiments at thermal energies to determine sticking curves up to the saturation limit.

Late renal vein thrombosis associated with recurrence of membranous nephropathy in a renal allograft: a case report

Allograft renal vein thrombosis (RVT) is an uncommon but potentially catastrophic complication. Although it usually occurs in the early posttransplant period and is associated with surgical complications or vascular rejection, it may develop later, when it is generally related with a hypercoagulable state. Typical clinical presentation is sudden oligoanuric acute renal failure, and hematuria, with a painful and swollen renal allograft. Confirmation of the diagnosis requires Doppler ultrasound and computed tomography. Herein we have reported a successfully treated case of late RVT that developed in an allograft with recurrent membranous nephropathy associated with the nephrotic syndrome. The patient fully recovered renal graft function a few days after presentation, which was related to anticoagulant therapy. We demonstrated complete recanalization of the venous thrombosis.

Impact of parity on anthropometric measures of obesity controlling by multiple confounders: a cross-sectional study in Chilean women

AIM

To find out whether there is an association between parity and obesity, evaluated through body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) in Chilean women after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics, health risk and gynaeco-obstetric factors.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional study, using baseline data of the San Francisco Project.

SETTING

San Francisco de Mostazal, located in the central region of Chile, 6512 Chilean-Hispanic women (Spanish heritage with a variable indigenous component).

METHODS

A weighted random sample of 508 women who had their first pregnancy inside the primary child-bearing ages. Data were collected between 1997 and 1999. Statistical associations between parity and different anthropometric measurements of adiposity in multiple linear (MLnR) and logistic regression models (MLtR) were evaluated.

RESULTS

In MLnR a modest parity-related increment in BMI and practically null increment in WC, WHR and WHtR was observed. Covariates that showed a statistically significant association with anthropometric measures of adiposity were age, low education, marital status, employment, smoking, smoking cessation, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, parent's obesity, menarche and fetal macrosomia. Crude odds ratio (OR) showed a strong association between parity and anthropometric markers of obesity. Nevertheless, after adjustments in MLtR models, the association remained only for BMI. All the measures of abdominal obesity related to parous women showed OR smaller than 1 (95% confidence intervals 0.57 to 0.96).

CONCLUSIONS

Parity modestly influences BMI, but does not seem to be related to WC, WHR and WHtR after controlling by confounders. Parity can increase adiposity but not necessarily following an abdominal pattern.

Nano/microscale order affects the early stages of biofilm formation on metal surfaces

The adhesion of Pseudomonas fluorescens was studied on nano/microengineered surfaces. Results show that these bacteria formed well-defined aggregates on randomly oriented nanosized granular gold substrates. These aggregates consist of aligned ensembles of bacteria, with some of them strongly elongated. This kind of biological structure was not found on ordered engineered surfaces because bacterial alignment and cell-to-cell sticking were hindered. Importantly, differences in cell morphology, length, orientation, and flagellation were observed between bacteria attached on the ordered nano/microstructures and the randomly ordered surfaces. The implications of the results are related to the design of engineered surfaces to enhance (nanostructured filters) or inhibit (medical implants and industrial biofouling) bacterial colonization on the surfaces and to the biocontrol of soil ecosystems.

Reactive and nonreactive scattering of N2 from Ru(0001): a six-dimensional adiabatic study

We have studied the dissociative chemisorption and scattering of N(2) on and from Ru(0001), using a six-dimensional quasiclassical trajectory method. The potential energy surface, which depends on all the molecular degrees of freedom, has been built applying a modified Shepard interpolation method to a data set of results from density functional theory, employing the RPBE generalized gradient approximation. The frozen surface and Born-Oppenheimer [Ann. Phys. (Leipzig) 84, 457 (1927)] approximations were used, neglecting phonons and electron-hole pair excitations. Dissociative chemisorption probabilities are found to be very small even for translational energies much higher than the minimum reaction barrier, in good agreement with experiment. A comparison to previous low dimensional calculations shows the importance of taking into account the multidimensional effects of N(2) rotation and translation parallel to the surface. The new calculations strongly suggest a much smaller role of nonadiabatic effects than previously assumed on the basis of a comparison between low dimensional results and experiments [J. Chem. Phys. 115, 9028 (2001)]. Also in agreement with experiment, our theoretical results show a strong dependence of reaction on the initial vibrational state. Computed angular scattering distributions and parallel translation energy distributions are in good agreement with experiments on scattering, but the theory overestimates vibrational and rotational excitations in scattering.

Aminiphilus circumscriptus gen. nov., sp. nov., an anaerobic amino-acid-degrading bacterium from an upflow anaerobic sludge reactor

Strain ILE-2T was isolated from an upflow anaerobic sludge bed reactor treating brewery wastewater. The motile, non-sporulating, slightly curved cells (2–4×0.1 μm) stained Gram-negative and grew optimally at 42 °C and pH 7.1 with 0.5 % NaCl. The strain required yeast extract for growth and fermented Casamino acids, peptone, isoleucine, arginine, lysine, alanine, valine, glutamate, histidine, glutamine, methionine, malate, fumarate, glycerol and pyruvate to acetate, propionate and minor amounts of branched-chain fatty acids. Carbohydrates, formate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, isovalerate, methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, butanol, lactate, succinate, starch, casein, gelatin, xylan and a number of other amino acids were not utilized. The DNA G+C content of strain ILE-2T was 52.7 mol%. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that ILE-2T was distantly related to members of the genera Aminobacterium (83 % similarity) and Aminomonas (85 % similarity) in the family Syntrophomonadaceae, order Clostridiales, phylum Firmicutes. On the basis of the results of our polyphasic analysis, strain ILE-2T represents a novel species and genus within the family Syntrophomonadaceae, for which the name Aminiphilus circumscriptus gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Aminiphilus circumscriptus is ILE-2T (=DSM 16581T =JCM 14039T).

Aging in the vestibular nuclear complex of the male golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus): anatomic and morphometric study

To study the effects of senescence on the vestibular nuclear complex twenty brainstems from male golden hamsters between 3 and 27 months-old were used and the possible variations in the number of neurons, neuronal morphology and nuclear volume were studied. The neuron profiles were drawn with a camera lucida and Abercrombie's method was used to estimate the total number of neurons. The test of Kolmogorov-Smirnov with the correction of Lilliefors was used to evaluate the fit of our data to a normal distribution and a regression analysis was done to decide if the variation of our data with age was statistically significant. The results of the present study are relevant only for male animals and the effect of senescence could be different in female vestibular nuclear complex. Aging affects the volume of the superior and lateral vestibular nuclei, as well as the nuclear neuronal diameter of the medial vestibular nucleus, but no significant neuronal loss has been appreciated in vestibular nuclear complex related with age. During the aging process we have observed that the distribution of neurons within the vestibular nuclei of the golden hamster does not show important changes and most of their morphometric parameters do not vary significantly.

Determination of inorganic bromide content in several vegetable foods

The phenol red spectrophotometric method has been studied and applied as an inexpensive screening method for the determination of bromide in vegetables samples. The concentration of bromide ranged from 3.65 to 14.42 mg kg(-1) in capsicum, 4.50 to 9.30 mg kg(-1) in potatoes, and 3.63 to 19.02 mg kg(-1) in fungi. The content of inorganic bromide in the studied vegetables was found to be below the maximum concentration of residues established by Spanish legislation (20 mg kg(-1)).

Characterization of cell death events induced by anti-neoplastic drugs cisplatin, paclitaxel and 5-fluorouracil on human hepatoma cell lines: Possible mechanisms of cell resistance

Two different hepatoma cell lines were incubated for 48h with chemotherapeutic drugs cisplatin, paclitaxel and 5-FU to determine their ability to induce cytotoxicity and DNA fragmentation as well as to modify the expression of some cell death-related genes that could be involved in the resistance to therapy. We observed that cisplatin and paclitaxel induced cytotoxicity, but significant differences between both cell lines, were found only in the case of paclitaxel. At 48h, apoptosis was clearly present in Hep3B cells treated with cisplatin and HepG2 cells treated with paclitaxel. 5-FU induced cytotoxicity in both cell lines but only at higher concentrations than the other two drugs, triggering apoptosis and necrosis in HepG2 cells and only necrosis in Hep3B. When a time course was performed for the first 8h of treatment to elucidate the initial mechanism of cell death responsible for DNA fragmentation, we observed that 5-FU in Hep3B, and cisplatin in both cell lines, induces primary necrosis, whereas at the concentration tested here, paclitaxel clearly triggers apoptosis in both cell lines. HepG2 cells were weakly sensitive to 5-FU in the first 8h of treatment, so the primary mechanism of cell death was not clear, but results seem to indicate that it could be apoptosis. At 48h, Bax was not up-regulated with any of the treatments, whereas cisplatin was able to induce Bcl-xL down-regulation in both cell lines. Treatment with 5-FU also down-regulated Bcl-xL in HepG2 cells. We also measured variations in the expression of survivin, an inhibitor of apoptosis that has also been involved in mitototic catastrophe. Hep3B cells seem to show an increase in protein levels with all treatments. Exposure to paclitaxel resulted in the highest effect. In the case of HepG2 cells, there was a decrease in survivin expression when cells were treated with 5FU and paclitaxel, both treatments showing complete loss of the protein. Using an antibody that recognizes unprocessed caspase-3, we observed that the enzyme was assumingly activated in HepG2 cells treated with 5FU and paclitaxel, but only weakly after treatment with cisplatin. Hep3B cells did not show activation since the levels of the pro-enzyme remained the same as that in the control. In conclusion, the three drugs tested in this study could induce cell death, with paclitaxel being more effective inducing apoptosis. 5FU was only effective at high doses and its mechanism seems to be primarily related to necrosis in Hep3B and probably apoptosis in HepG2. Cisplatin mechanism of cell death is probably mediated by the decrease in anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-xL whereas paclitaxel and 5FU are decreasing the apoptosis inhibitor survivin. According to pro-enzyme levels, caspase-3 was only activated in HepG2 cells, whereas in the case of Hep3B cells the mechanisms of toxicity appear to be caspase-3-independent at the time and concentrations tested in this study. The resistance of Hep3B cells to death induced by chemotherapy could be related to an increase in the expression of IAP survivin, which can decrease cell response to the treatment or even switch the type of death from apoptosis to another kind, making therapy less efficient.

Exploring the Use of Random Regression Models with Legendre Polynomials to Analyze Measures of Volume of Ejaculate in Holstein Bulls

Artificial insemination centers routinely collect records of quantity and quality of semen of bulls throughout the animals' productive period. The goal of this paper was to explore the use of random regression models with orthogonal polynomials to analyze repeated measures of semen production of Spanish Holstein bulls. A total of 8,773 records of volume of first ejaculate (VFE) collected between 12 and 30 mo of age from 213 Spanish Holstein bulls was analyzed under alternative random regression models. Legendre polynomial functions of increasing order (0 to 6) were fitted to the average trajectory, additive genetic and permanent environmental effects. Age at collection and days in production were used as time variables. Heterogeneous and homogeneous residual variances were alternatively assumed. Analyses were carried out within a Bayesian framework. The logarithm of the marginal density and the cross-validation predictive ability of the data were used as model comparison criteria. Based on both criteria, age at collection as a time variable and heterogeneous residuals models are recommended to analyze changes of VFE over time. Both criteria indicated that fitting random curves for genetic and permanent environmental components as well as for the average trajector improved the quality of models. Furthermore, models with a higher order polynomial for the permanent environmental (5 to 6) than for the genetic components (4 to 5) and the average trajectory (2 to 3) tended to perform best. High-order polynomials were needed to accommodate the highly oscillating nature of the phenotypic values. Heritability and repeatability estimates, disregarding the extremes of the studied period, ranged from 0.15 to 0.35 and from 0.20 to 0.50, respectively, indicating that selection for VFE may be effective at any stage. Small differences among models were observed. Apart from the extremes, estimated correlations between ages decreased steadily from 0.9 and 0.4 for measures 1 mo apart to 0.4 and 0.2 for most distant measures for additive genetic and phenotypic components, respectively. Further investigation to account for environmental factors that may be responsible for the oscillating observations of VFE is needed.

[Evaluation of renal lesions using 99mTc-DMSA in children with urinary tract infection and the relation with vesicoureteral reflux]

OBJECTIVE

Paediatric patients with urinary tract infection (UTI) have risk of developing renal scarrings. Although it is known that vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) predisposes to UTIs and it seems to have an important role in the development of renal lesions, some recent published studies question that relation. The aim of the study was to evaluate renal scarring by using renal scintigraphy 99mTc-DMSA and see the relation with or without the presence of VUR.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

We evaluated retrospectively a total of 230 patients (460 renal units), mean age: 11 months (range: 12d-5y), with UTI probed by urinoculture. All were studied with voiding cistourethrography (MCU) to evaluate the presence or absence of VUR. Patients were evaluated with 99mTc-DMSA scan 6 months after UTI to determine if UTI caused renal scarring.

RESULTS

Renal scans with 99mTc-DMSA 6 months post-infection were abnormal in 62 renal units, affecting 54 patients (23 %). From all patients studied, 110 were diagnosis of VUR being affected 161 renal units, 43 of them (27 %) presented renal scarrings. From the remaining 120 patients without VUR that is 240 renal units, 19 of them (8 %) presented parenchymatous damage.

CONCLUSION

Renal scarring resulting from UTI are in some cases related to VUR, but sometimes are caused by the infection itself. Not all patients with VUR develop renal lesions, and neither the presence of VUR always predispose children to renal lesions. MCU and direct isotopic cystography are useful for diagnosis of VUR but we shouldn't avoid 99mTc-DMSA scan in the management of children with UTI.
