Modal characterization of fiber-to-fiber coupling processes

We present a detailed experimental investigation of a fiber-to-fiber coupling process by characterizing the mode content at the output of the system. In our experiment a single-mode fiber is transversally scanned with respect to a multimode fiber, revealing position-dependent higher-order mode excitation. The outlined measurement system can be used for automated optimization of fundamental mode content and beam quality. Additionally, our approach characterizes the modal transmission properties of the multimode waveguide in its present state and is hence of high relevance for the conception of transport fibers and fiber laser systems.

Probing the energy barriers and magnetization reversal processes of nanoperforated membrane based percolated media

Magnetization reversal processes in Co/Pt multilayers prepared on nanoperforated templates are probed by magnetization relaxation measurements. The signature of pinning controlled domain wall movement as expected for percolated media is identified. This contrasts with the nucleation-type reversal mechanism of a Co/Pt reference film prepared on a smooth substrate. A zero field energy barrier of 93kBT is determined by fluctuation field measurements and is elucidated by micromagnetic calculations using the nudged elastic band method. This value is sufficiently large to qualify the material as a promising percolated medium.

Mode resolved bend loss in few-mode optical fibers

We present a novel approach to directly measure the bend loss of individual modes in few-mode fibers based on the correlation filter technique. This technique benefits from a computer-generated hologram performing a modal decomposition, yielding the optical power of all propagating modes in the bent fiber. Results are compared with rigorous loss simulations and with common loss formulas for step-index fibers revealing high measurement fidelity. To the best of our knowledge, we demonstrate for the first time an experimental loss discrimination between index-degenerated modes.

Investigation of a passive sensor array for diagnosis of loosening of endoprosthetic implants

Currently, imaging methods are used to diagnose loosening of endoprosthetic implants, but fail to achieve 100% accuracy. In this study, a passive sensor array which is based on the interaction between magnetic oscillators inside the implant and an excitation coil outside the patient was investigated. The excited oscillators produce sound in the audible range, which varies according to the extent of loosening. By performing several experimental tests, the sensor array was optimized to guarantee reproducible and selective excitation of the sound emission. Variation in the distance between the oscillators demonstrated a definite influence on the quality of the generated sound signal. Furthermore, a numerical design analysis using the boundary element method was generated for consideration of the magnetic field and the selectivity of the oscillators during excitation. The numerical simulation of the coil showed the higher selectivity of a coil with a C-shape compared to a cylindrical coil. Based on these investigations, the passive sensor system reveals the potential for detection of implant loosening. Future aims include the further miniaturization of the oscillators and measurements to determine the sensitivity of the proposed sensor system.

Modal decomposition without a priori scale information

The modal decomposition of an arbitrary optical field may be done without regard to the spatial scale of the chosen basis functions, but this generally leads to a large number of modes in the expansion. While this may be considered as mathematically correct, it is not efficient and not physically representative of the underlying field. Here we demonstrate a modal decomposition approach that requires no a priori knowledge of the spatial scale of the modes, but nevertheless leads to an optimised modal expansion. We illustrate the power of the method by successfully decomposing beams from a diode-pumped solid state laser resonator into an optimised Laguerre-Gaussian mode set. Our experimental results, which are in agreement with theory, illustrate the versatility of the approach.

Beam-quality measurements using a spatial light modulator

We present a fast and easy technique for measuring the beam propagation ratio, M(2), of laser beams using a spatial light modulator. Our technique is based on digitally simulating the free-space propagation of light, thus eliminating the need for the traditional scan in the propagation direction. We illustrate two approaches to achieving this, neither of which requires any information of the laser beam under investigation nor necessitates any moving optical components. The comparison with theoretical predictions reveals excellent agreement and proves the accuracy of the technique.

Wavefront reconstruction by modal decomposition

We propose a new method to determine the wavefront of a laser beam based on modal decomposition by computer-generated holograms. The hologram is encoded with a transmission function suitable for measuring the amplitudes and phases of the modes in real-time. This yields the complete information about the optical field, from which the Poynting vector and the wavefront are deduced. Two different wavefront reconstruction options are outlined: reconstruction from the phase for scalar beams, and reconstruction from the Poynting vector for inhomogeneously polarized beams. Results are compared to Shack-Hartmann measurements that serve as a reference and are shown to reproduce the wavefront and phase with very high fidelity.

Mode analysis with a spatial light modulator as a correlation filter

A procedure for the real-time analysis of laser modes using a phase-only spatial light modulator is outlined. The procedure involves encoding into digital holograms by complex amplitude modulation a set of orthonormal basis functions into which the initial field is decomposed. This approach allows any function to be encoded and refreshed in real time (60 Hz). We implement a decomposition of guided modes propagating in optical fibers and show that we can successfully reconstruct the observed field with very high fidelity.

Organ distribution of Schmallenberg virus RNA in malformed newborns

A novel orthobunyavirus was first detected in German dairy cows in autumn 2011 and was subsequently found in the brains of malformed lambs, kids and calves in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Great Britain, Luxembourg and Spain. For rapid detection of this novel virus, named Schmallenberg virus, a real time quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR) was developed at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut and provided to the federal veterinary state laboratories in Germany. For diagnostic purposes, the organ distribution of this new virus was analyzed in several organs and body fluids of 15 lambs and two calves showing typical malformations. Spleen, cerebrum, meconium, spinal cord, rib cartilage, umbilical cord, placental fluid out of the stomach as well as external placental fluid scraped from the coat of the foetuses were collected during necropsy. All animals were tested RT-qPCR positive in the external placental fluid, and all but one were also RT-qPCR positive in the cerebrum, the umbilical and the spinal cord. Our results suggest that both the external placental fluid and the umbilical cord could be suitable sample materials for the confirmation of an infection with Schmallenberg virus in malformed newborns, at least in lambs. This is of special interest since those samples can be collected very easily on the farm without the need of a necropsy.

Fast M2 measurement for fiber beams based on modal analysis

We report on a fast and experimentally easy technique for measuring the beam propagation ratio M(2) of light guided by optical fibers. A holographic filter enables us to determine amplitudes and phases of the excited fiber eigenmodes. The coherent superposition of modes allows the reconstruction of the optical field. With this information at hand, we are able to simulate the free-space propagation of the beam and to perform a virtual caustic measurement. Associated beam propagation ratios M(2) accurately agree with ISO-standard measurements.

No proinflammatory signature in CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells in multiple sclerosis patients

Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) has been used as a therapeutic approach in multiple sclerosis (MS). However, it is still unclear if the immune system that emerges from autologous CD34+ hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPC) of MS patients is pre-conditioned to re-develop the proinflammatory phenotype. The objective of this article is to compare the whole genome gene and microRNA expression signature in CD34+ HPC of MS patients and healthy donors (HD). CD34+ HPC were isolated from peripheral blood of eight MS patients and five HD and analyzed by whole genome gene expression and microRNA expression microarray. Among the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) only TNNT1 reached statistical significance (logFC=3.1, p<0.01). The microRNA expression was not significantly different between MS patients and HD. We did not find significant alterations of gene expression or microRNA profiles in CD34+ HPCs of MS patients. Our results support the use of aHSCT for treatment of MS.

Real-time determination of laser beam quality by modal decomposition

We present a real-time method to determine the beam propagation ratio M2 of laser beams. The all-optical measurement of modal amplitudes yields M2 parameters conform to the ISO standard method. The experimental technique is simple and fast, which allows to investigate laser beams under conditions inaccessible to other methods.

Magnetic films on nanoperforated templates: a route towards percolated perpendicular media

We present a study on the magnetization reversal in Co/Pt multilayer films with an out-of-plane easy axis of magnetization deposited onto substrates with densely distributed perforations with an average period as small as 34 nm. Deposition of magnetic Co/Pt multilayers onto the nanoperforated surface results in an array of magnetic nanodots surrounded by a continuous magnetic film. Following the evolution of the magnetic domain pattern in the system, we suggest that domain walls are pinned on structural inhomogeneities given by the underlying nanoperforated template. Furthermore, a series of micromagnetic simulations was performed in order to understand the modification of the pinning strength of domain walls due to the magnetic interaction between nanodots and the surrounding film. The results of the simulations show that magnetic exchange coupling between the nanodots and the surrounding film strongly influences the pinning behavior of the magnetic domain walls which can be optimized to provide maximal pinning.

Stiffening of human skin fibroblasts with age

Changes in mechanical properties are an essential characteristic of the aging process of human skin. Previous studies attribute these changes predominantly to the altered collagen and elastin organization and density of the extracellular matrix. Here, we show that individual dermal fibroblasts also exhibit a significant increase in stiffness during aging in vivo. With the laser-based optical cell stretcher we examined the viscoelastic biomechanics of dermal fibroblasts isolated from 14 human donors aged 27 to 80. Increasing age was clearly accompanied by a stiffening of the investigated cells. We found that fibroblasts from old donors exhibited an increase in rigidity of ∼60% with respect to cells of the youngest donors. A FACS analysis of the content of the cytoskeletal polymers shows a shift from monomeric G-actin to polymerized, filamentous F-actin, but no significant changes in the vimentin and microtubule content. The rheological analysis of fibroblast-populated collagen gels demonstrates that cell stiffening directly results in altered viscoelastic properties of the collagen matrix. These results identify a new mechanism that may contribute to the age-related impairment of elastic properties in human skin. The altered mechanical behavior might influence cell functions involving the cytoskeleton, such as contractility, motility, and proliferation, which are essential for reorganization of the extracellular matrix.

Measuring the spatial polarization distribution of multimode beams emerging from passive step-index large-mode-area fibers

We measure the polarization state of each guided transversal mode propagating in step-index large-mode-area fibers (V≈4) using a correlation-filter based measurement technique in combination with a Stokes parameter measurement. The entire emerging beam, expressed in terms of a phase-dependent superposition of linearly polarized modes, demonstrates spatially varying polarization properties. By knowing the information about modal amplitudes and phase differences, full information about the optical field is available.
