Abstract
A white solid compound was isolated from the chloroform extract of the leaves of Senna villosa. The material was identified by (1)H-NMR, (13)C-NMR, IR and EM methods as (8-hydroxymethylen)-trieicosanyl acetate, a new compound with biological activity, which was tested in vitro at concentrations of 1.65, 3.3 and 6.6 microg/ml for inhibition of the growth of Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes and tripomastigotes. We observed inhibition of growth at all concentrations tested, and the effect at concentrations of 3.3 and 6.6 microg/ml was greater than that of gentian violet (positive control). At the concentration of 6.6 microg/ml, the compound showed the greatest inhibitory effect against the growth of both forms of the parasite.

Abstract
Abstract. The Caliope project funded by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment establishes an air quality forecasting system for Spain to increase the knowledge on transport and dynamics of pollutants in Spain, to assure the accomplishment of legislation and to inform the population about the levels of pollutants, topics in which the European Commission has shown a great concern. The present contribution describes the first quantitative verification study performed so far with two chemistry transport models (CMAQ and CHIMERE) for a reference year (2004) at medium spatial resolution (around 20×20 km for the Iberian Peninsula). Both models perform similarly in the case of ground-level ozone. The mean normalised gross error MNGE remains below 15–20% during summertime, when ozone episodes occur, outlining the good skills of the system concerning the forecasting of air quality in Spain. Furthermore, the ongoing developments of the system towards high resolution modelling (4×4 km for Spain, 12×12 km for Europe, 1 h temporal resolution) and the integration with observations within the Caliope umbrella are described.

Abstract
This study evaluated the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease, identified the causal serotypes, and tracked the evolution of the antibiotic susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates in the regions of the Basque Country and Navarre, Spain, before and after the introduction of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. The study included all children aged between birth and 5 years diagnosed with bacteremia, meningitis, or bacteremic pneumonia caused by pneumococci. By the second year after introduction of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, compared with the period 1998-2001, the incidence of invasive disease decreased by 64.3% in children less than 12 months of age, by 39.7% in children less than 24 months of age, and by 37.5% in children less than 60 months of age. The prevalence of clinical isolates of S. pneumoniae that lacked susceptibility to penicillin decreased by 58.2% among children less than 60 months of age. With an estimated coverage by four-dose heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine of 28-45% in 2003, the number of invasive pneumococcal infections in the Basque Country and in Navarre fell significantly after just 2 years of immunization, underscoring the importance of improving vaccination coverage under a universal childhood immunization program.

Abstract
Eighty-seven Manchego sucking lambs raised exclusively on maternal milk were slaughtered. The carcasses were weighed immediately after dressing and classified according to hot carcass weight (HCW): low HCW (<5.5 kg), medium HCW (5.5 to 6.5 kg) and high HCW (≥ 6.5 kg). The effects of this classification system on carcass and meat quality were studied. Carcass conformation improved as carcass weight increased; carcasses became more compact. Carcass fatness increased (P< 0.001) as carcasses became heavier. With regard to the joints, leg (P< 0.001) and shoulder (P< 0.05) proportions decreased as carcass weight increased, whereas loin-rib (P< 0.001) and flank (P< 0.001) proportions increased. The proportion of fat in the leg clearly increased in the heavier carcasses (P< 0.001), while that of bone decreased (P< 0.001) and that of muscle was not affected. pH at 24 h in them. longissimusdorsi andm. semitendinosusdecreased as carcass weight increased. The only meat colour parameter affected by carcass weight was the yellowness index; lighter-weight carcasses displayed lower index (P< 0.05). Cooking losses were unaffected as carcass weight increased, whereas with regard to tenderness, the shear force value tended to be higher in the low carcass weight group. No differences between carcass weight groups were found in the sensory analysis. Fatty acid composition did not show any significant effect due to carcass weight except in stearic fatty acid (C18:0); C18:0 proportion decreased (P< 0.01) as carcasses became heavier. Carcass weight affected carcass quality (all carcass quality parameters studied were higher in the heavier carcasses), whereas meat quality varied little as a result the small variation between carcass weights in sucking lambs.

Abstract
The HOX genes are a family of transcription factors that bind to specific sequences of DNA in target genes regulating their expression. The role of HOX genes in adult cell differentiation is still obscure, but growing evidence suggests that they may play an important role in the development of cancer. In order to study the role of the HOX Abd-B genes in cervical cancer, we analyzed their expression in cervical tissues. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and RNA in situ hybridization were used to detect HOX Abd-B messenger RNA expression in nine normal cervical tissues and ten cervical carcinomas. The normal tissues were human papillomavirus (HPV) negative, whereas all invasive carcinomas included were HPV16 positive. In this study, we show that HOXA9, A10, A11, A13, B9, D11, and D13 genes are expressed in both the epithelium of normal tissues and neoplastic cells from squamous cervical carcinomas. Interestingly, the HOXC10 and D12 genes were not expressed in any cervical tissues; however, HOXB13, C9, C11, C12, C13, D9, and D10 genes were expressed only in the tumoral tissues but not in the normal cervix. Our findings suggest that the expression of HOXB13, D9, D10, and HOXC cluster (HOXC9, C11-C13) genes might be an important step involved in cervical cancer.

Abstract
c-kit (CD117) plays an important role in the early stages of haematopoiesis. Previous studies of porcine haematopoietic stem cells have relied for their identification on the use of the c-kit ligand stem cell factor. Here, we describe a new mAb, 2B8/BM, that recognizes a 155-kDa protein expressed on a small subset (2-8%) of bone marrow haematopoietic cells. 2B8/BM(+) cells have a blast appearance, and are mostly negative for lineage-specific markers or express low levels of CD172a or SLA-II. In in vitro colony-forming unit assays these cells were able to give rise to erythroid and myeloid colonies. Altogether these data suggested that the 2B8/BM antigen might be the porcine orthologue of the human c-kit. This specificity was confirmed by the binding of mAb 2B8/BM to CHO cells transfected with a plasmid encoding the porcine c-kit ectodomain. This antibody can facilitate the isolation and enrichment of porcine stem cells to be used in procedures aimed to induce xenograft tolerance or to test their potential to repair damaged tissues and organs.

Abstract
Here, we describe two new surface antigens, named 6D10 and 2B2, whose expression is restricted to porcine granulocytes. 6D10 is only detected in neutrophils and its expression decreases from promyelocytes to mature cells. By contrast, 2B2 antigen is selectively expressed in mature neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils. The expression of these antigens along granulocyte maturation allows the discrimination of several developmental stages of granulocytes based on phenotypic, morphological and functional characteristics previously established. Moreover, these new markers are useful tools to easily characterize the different granulocytes lineages (neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils). By using multiparameter flow cytometric analysis, we have performed a phenotypic and functional characterization of the granulocyte subsets identified by the combination of 6D10 and 2B2 antigens.

Abstract
Cry toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis are used for insect control. Their primary action is to lyse midgut epithelial cells. In this review we will summarize recent findings on the Cry toxin-receptor interaction and the role of receptor recognition in their mode of action. Cry toxins interact sequentially with multiple receptors. In lepidopteran insects, Cry1A monomeric toxins interact with the first receptor and this interaction triggers oligomerization of the toxins. The oligomer then interacts with second receptor inducing insertion into membrane microdomains and larval death. In the case of mosquitocidal toxins, Cry and Cyt toxins play a part. These toxins have a synergistic effect and Cyt1Aa overcomes Cry toxin resistance. Recently, it was proposed that Cyt1Aa synergizes or suppresses resistance to Cry toxins by functioning as a membrane-bound receptor for Cry toxin.

Abstract
The production of several high value steroid drugs, used as progestational, adrenocortical, estrogenic and contraceptive agents, is mostly derived from 4-androstene-dione (AD) and 1,4 androsta-diene-3,17-dione (ADD). Three Vietnamese phytosterols mixtures named VN-1, VN-2 and VN-3, isolated from soybean oil may be efficiently converted into these key compounds by mycobacterial cells. Their general phytosterol composition was 55.39, 70.55, 70.19% for VN-1, VN-2 and VN-3, respectively. Moreover, values of campesterol, beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol were determined. After 120 h of shaking in suitable culture media and temperature, maximal yield conversion to ADD was higher than 70% and up to 64% to AD, for the various phytosterols mixtures assays. These results may be better when scaling-up such a procedure of phytosterols conversion.

Abstract
9030 Background: The prognostic significance of coexpression of myeloid antigens in pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) has been reported by several authors, with a frequency that has ranged widely. All of these authors are from developed countries, the aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic significance of these antigens in childhood ALL in a developing country. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 729 newly diagnosed patients with ALL under 14 years of age, who had a bone marrow flow cytometry performed at our institution, between 1996–2002. Clinical data and treatment outcomes were reviewed and compared between patients with ALL who expressed myeloid antigens and those who did not using chi-square test. Results: 729 medical charts were studied, 81.6% of them were B-common, 8.2% were pro-B, 8.2% were T-cell and 2.1% were pre-B ALL patients. Overall frequency of myeloid antigen expression was 36.6%. The most frequent specific antigens found were: CD13, 15.5%; CD15, 6.0% and CD33, 4.5%. Evaluating the B-common ALL patients the presence of myeloid antigens rises to 43%. Patients who had coexpression of myeloid antigens had a relapse rate (any site) of 49.2% while 36.3% who had no coexpression had a relapse (p=0.001). There has also been statistical significance in bone marrow response on day 14 of induction with 64.9% having less than 5% blasts in the group without coexpression and 46.4% in the group with coexpression (p<0.0001). Conclusions: The present retrospective review shows the presence of associated myeloid antigens in our ALL patients in 36.6%. We have shown that it is an adverse prognostic factor for childhood ALL in a developing country, unlike reports from other centers in developed countries. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Increased serum and intrahepatic interferon gamma inducible protein 10 (IP-10) levels in patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) have been described. AIM To analyse the possible association of serum IP-10 levels with different outcomes to antiviral therapy. PATIENTS A total of 137 CHC patients treated with peginterferon plus ribavirin. METHODS Serum IP-10 levels were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay before therapy, after 12 weeks of treatment, and 24 weeks after cessation of therapy. Variables significantly associated with a sustained virological response (SVR) on univariate analysis were included in a multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS Pretreatment serum IP-10 levels in patients with SVR were significantly lower than in non-responders (NR) (332.4 (222.1) v 476.8 (305.3) pg/ml, respectively; p=0.004). Serum IP-10 concentrations significantly decreased in patients with SVR (pretreatment: 332.4 (222.1) pg/ml; post-treatment: 170.2 (140.1) pg/ml; p<0.001) but not in NR (pretreatment: 476.8 (305.3) pg/ml; post treatment: 387.3 (268.1) pg/ml; p=0.06). By multivariate analysis, non-1 genotype (odds ratio (OR) 3.5 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-10.4); p=0.003) and low viral load at baseline (OR 0.34 (95% CI 0.14-0.79); p=0.01) were independent predictors of SVR in all patients. When multivariate analysis was restricted to patients with genotype 1, only baseline viral load (OR 0.38 (95% CI 0.155-0.96); p=0.04) and pretreatment serum IP-10 levels (OR 0.99 (95% CI 0.996-0.999); p=0.03) were identified as predictive factors of SVR. CONCLUSION Pretreatment serum IP-10 behaves as a predictive factor of SVR to peginterferon plus ribavirin therapy in genotype 1 infected patients.
