Abstract
High-pressure behavior of nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) was investigated by Raman and IR spectroscopy at pressures up to 55 GPa and room temperature, as well as by periodic calculations up to 100 GPa. Experimentally, we find three solid-solid phase transitions at 9, 18, and 39.5 GPa. Vibrational spectroscopy indicates that in all observed phases NF3 remains in the molecular form, in contrast to the behavior of compressed ammonia. This finding is confirmed by density functional theory calculations, which also indicate that the phase transitions of compressed NF3 are governed by the interplay between lone‑pair interactions and efficient molecule packing. Although nitrogen trifluoride is molecular in the whole pressure range studied, we show that it can be photodissociated by mid-IR laser radiation. This finding paves the way for the use of NF3 as an oxidizing and fluorinating agent in high-pressure reactions.

Abstract
Body measurement and meat quality traits play important roles in the evaluation of productivity in cattle; they are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Recent studies have shown that LYRM1 is a novel gene related to obesity and may influence fat deposition. We screened for new polymorphisms in the bovine LYRM1 gene and analyzed their association with body measurement and meat quality traits in cattle. DNA samples were obtained from 572 Qinchuan cattle aged from 18 to 24 months. DNA sequencing was used to find the LYRM1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Sequence analysis of LYRM1 revealed four novel SNPs in exon 3: G50A in coding region, C126A, A127T, and T128A in a 3'-untranslated region. G50A, A127T and T128A showed two genotypes: AG and GG, AA and AT, AT and TT, respectively; while C126A showed three genotypes: AA, AC and CC. Analysis showed that these four polymorphisms were significantly associated with body measurement and meat quality traits in the Qinchuan cattle population. We suggest that the LYRM1 gene can be used for marker-assisted selection to improve body measurement and meat quality traits in the Qinchuan cattle population.

Abstract
Single-crystalline perovskite LaBaCo2O5.5+δ thin films were grown on a (110) NdGaO3 single-crystal substrate in order to systematically investigate the effect of lattice mismatch on the electrical transport properties in comparison to the films on LaAlO3, SrTiO3, and MgO substrates. Microstructure studies reveal that all of the LaBaCo2O5.5+δ films are of excellent quality with atomically sharp interface structures. The electrical and magnetic transport property studies indicate that the resistivity, magnetoresistance, and magnetic moment of the film are very sensitive to the substrate materials because of the lattice mismatch/interface strain. The Curie temperature, however, is almost independent of the strain imposed by the substrate, probably because of the strong coupling between the nanodomain boundary and interface strain.

Abstract
Silver iodide (AgI-V) is an archetypical ionic compound for studying the formation mechanism of a superionic state. Previous studies have proven that superionic AgI with high ionic conductivity greater than 0.1 Ω(-1)cm(-1) could only be obtained at high temperatures. We show in this paper that high pressure could also induce the superionic state in AgI even at ambient temperature. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, we investigated Ag(+) ions diffusing in rock-salt structured AgI-III and KOH-type AgI-V under high pressures and directly observed the superionic state in AgI-V. The diffusion coefficient of AgI-V is ∼3.4 × 10(-4)-8.6 × 10(-4) cm(2)/s in the investigated pressure range of 12-17 GPa, comparable with those of superionic α-AgI and AgI-III'. By analyzing the half infinite length Warburg diffusion process, two parameters α and β, which closely relate to the disordered state of Ag(+) ions, have been determined and it was suggested that Ag(+) ions in AgI-V become disordered. The ionic conductivity of AgI-V is three orders of magnitude higher than that of AgI-III, and has reached around 0.1 Ω(-1)cm(-1). Evidence for all three, the diffusion coefficient, α and β, and conductivity have proven that AgI-V is a superionic conductor at ambient temperature.

Abstract
AIM The present study was conducted to investigate whether LBP had a protective effect on cerebral ischemic reperfusion injury and to determine the possible mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Male Kunming (KM) mice were used to make the model cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R). The behavioral test was used to measure neurological deficit scores for evaluation of ischemic reperfusion damage of brain. The change of electroencephalograph (EEG) was monitored by Model SMUP-E Bio-electric Signals Processing System. The infarction area of brain was assessed in brain slices with 2% solution of 2,3,5-triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC). Spectrophotometric assay was used to determine the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) of the brain. RESULTS The results showed that LBP at doses of 20 and 40 mg/kg markedly decreased the neurological deficit scores and the infarction area in MCAO/R mice. At the same time, LBP significantly decreased MDA content, and increased SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, LDH activities in ischemic reperfusion brain. CONCLUSIONS These suggest that LBP might act as a potential neuroprotective agent against the cerebral reperfusion-induced injury in the brain through reducing lipid peroxides, scavenging free radicals, and improving the energy metabolism.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The presence of mesothelin (encoded by the mesothelin [MSLN] gene) in breast cancer is associated with tumour infiltration of the lymph node. This study evaluated whether MSLN overexpression promotes breast cancer cell invasiveness and metastasis. METHODS This study evaluated the effects of overexpression of MSLN on extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK1/2) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 levels, and the invasiveness and angiogenesis of the breast cancer cell line MCF-7 in vitro, and on MCF-7-derived tumour development in vivo. RESULTS MSLN overexpression significantly increased ERK1/2 and MMP9 protein levels and activity, and the invasive and angiogenic capability of MCF-7 cells, in vitro. Inhibition of ERK1/2 suppressed MMP-9 and the invasive and angiogenic capability of MSLN overexpressing MCF-7 cells. MSLN overexpression also increased MCF-7-derived tumour metastasis in vivo. CONCLUSION MSLN overexpression promoted the invasive potential of MCF-7 cells through ERK1/2-dependent upregulation of MMP-9; this association may have contributed to metastasis of MCF-7 cells in vivo. Mesothelin may be a useful biomarker for cancer progression and a novel therapeutic or chemopreventive target in human breast cancer.

Abstract
The domestic yak (Bos grunniens) is an iconic symbol of animal husbandry at high altitudes. Yaks exhibit unique external characteristics including long hair and large horns. However, hornless yaks can be found in different breeds and different populations. The hornless trait is also known as polled, and the POLL locus has been fine-mapped to chromosome 1 in cattle (Bos taurus), although the underlying genetic basis of the polled trait is still unclear in the yak. Thus, we performed an association study to identify the genetic polymorphisms responsible for the polled trait in the yak. Fifty polled Datong domestic yaks and 51 horned individuals were selected randomly from a huge herd and were used as the case and control groups respectively for the association analysis. Twelve genes located in the candidate region of the POLL locus in cattle were used as references to detect DNA polymorphisms related to yak polledness, which were analyzed by sequencing and a high-resolution melting test. We applied Fisher's exact test and haplotype analysis to show that a 147-kb segment that included three protein-coding genes C1H21orf62, GCFC1 and SYNJ1 was the most likely location of the POLL mutation in domestic yaks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our previous study revealed that proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (Pyk2) is implicated in both anchorage-independent growth and anoikis resistance in lung cancer cells. This study aims to explore the expression and clinical significance of Pyk2 and its phosphorylated forms in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS The mRNA and protein levels of Pyk2 or cancer stem cell markers (ALDH1a1, ABCG2 and Bmi-1) were either examined by reverse transcription-PCR or western blotting. An immunohistochemistry (IHC) assay was conducted to analyse the expression of Pyk2 and its phosphorylated forms in 128 NSCLC cases. RESULTS The levels of Pyk2 mRNA, total protein, and its phosphorylated form pY881 were higher in lung cancer lesions than in the paired noncancerous tissues. The IHC analysis showed the levels of the Pyk2 and Pyk2[pY881] proteins were highly expressed in 70 (54.7%) and 77 (60.2%) cases, respectively. Both Pyk2 and Pyk2[pY881] were independent prognostic factors for NSCLC patients. The gain and loss study of Pyk2 function revealed that Pyk2 could upregulate the expression of ALDH1a1, ABCG2 and Bmi-1 and enhance the ability of colony formation in soft agar assay in A549 and H460 cells. CONCLUSION Both Pyk2 and phosphorylated Pyk2[pY881] are potential prognostic factors and therapeutic targets for NSCLC.

Abstract
CONTEXT Chemical compositions of three herbal plants from the family Araliaceae genus Panax [Panax ginseng C. A. Mey, P. quinquefolius L. and P. notoginseng (Burk.) F. H. Chen] are quite similar; however, their medicinal natures vary greatly. The reason for differences has been explained in traditional Chinese medicine theory and partially verified by modern pharmacological investigations, such as antiplatelet aggregation. Aside from platelet aggregation, a variety of plasma coagulation factors are also involved in blood coagulation. The anticoagulation profiles of three herbs have not been investigated. OBJECTIVE The current research compared the inhibitory effects of three herbal extracts from Panax spp. and the purified ginsenosides from P. ginseng on blood coagulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS Human plasma was mixed with the water extracts (0.05 and 0.1 mg/mL) from roots of P. ginseng, P. quinquefolius and P. notoginseng and ginsenosides Rg1 and Rg2 (0.05 and 0.1 mg/mL), the blood clotting time of activated partial thromboplastin, prothrombin and thrombin were measured by a biochemical analyzer. RESULTS The water extracts (0.05 mg/mL) of P. ginseng, P. quinquefolius and P. notoginseng could significantly extend blood clotting time as compared to the control group. Among three herbal medicines, 0.05 mg/mL of water extract from P. ginseng exhibited the strongest anticoagulation effects, followed by P. notoginseng, while P. quinquefolius presented the weakest effects. Both ginsenosides Rg1 and Rg2 could significantly extend blood clotting time in all three tests; ginsenoside Rg2 exhibited relative stronger anticoagulation effects as compared to ginsenoside Rg1. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION Among three herbs tested, P. ginseng as well as its active component ginsenoside Rg2 shows the strongest anticoagulation activity; current results indicate that P. ginseng and ginsenoside Rg2 have great potential to be an anticoagulation drug.

Abstract
The CDIPT is crucial to the fatty acid metabolic pathway, intracellular signal transduction and energy metabolism in eukaryotic cells. We detected three SNPs at 3'-untranslated regions (UTR), named 3'-UTR_108 A > G, 3'-UTR_448 G > A and 3'-UTR_477 C > G, of the CDIPT gene in 618 Qinchuan cattle using PCR-RFLP and DNA sequencing methods. At each of the three SNPs, we found three genotypes named as follows: AA, AB, BB (3'-UTR_108 A > G), CC, CD, DD (3'-UTR_448 G > A) and EE, EF, FF (3'-UTR_477 C > G.). Based on association analysis of these SNPs with ultrasound measurement traits, individuals of genotype BB had a significantly larger loin muscle area than genotype AA. Individuals of genotype CC had significantly thicker back fat than individuals of genotype DD. Individuals of genotype EE also had significantly thicker back fat than did individuals of genotype FF. We conclude that these SNPs of the CDIPT gene could be used as molecular markers for selecting and breeding beef cattle with superior body traits, depending on breeding goals.

Abstract
Small populations may suffer more severe pollen limitation and result in Allee effects. Sex ratio may also affect pollination and reproduction success in dioecious species, which is always overlooked when performing conservation and reintroduction tasks. In this study, we investigated whether and how population size and sex ratio affected pollen limitation and reproduction in the endangered Ottelia acuminata, a dioecious submerged species. We established experimental plots with increasing population size and male sex ratio. We observed insect visitation, estimated pollen limitation by hand-pollinations and counted fruit set and seed production per fruit. Fruit set and seed production decreased significantly in small populations due to pollinator scarcity and thus suffered more severe pollen limitation. Although frequently visited, female-biased larger populations also suffered severe pollen limitation due to few effective visits and insufficient pollen availability. Rising male ratio enhanced pollination service and hence reproduction. Unexpectedly, pollinator preferences did not cause reduced reproduction in male-biased populations because of high pollen availability. However, reproductive outputs showed more variability in severe male-biased populations. Our results revealed two component Allee effects in fruit set and seed production, mediated by pollen limitation in O. acuminata. Moreover, reproduction decreased significantly in larger female-biased populations, increasing the risk of an Allee effect.

Abstract
Cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis, Mafa) have emerged as an important animal model for infectious disease and transplantation research. Extensive characterization of their major histocompatibility complex (MHC) polymorphism regions therefore becomes urgently required. In this study, we identified 41 MHC class I A nucleotide sequences in 34 unrelated cynomolgus macaques of Vietnamese origin farmed in Southern China, including eight novel Mafa-A sequences. We found two sequences with perfect identity and six sequences with close similarity to previously defined MHC class I alleles from other populations, especially from Indonesian-origin macaques. We also found three Vietnamese-origin cynomolgus macaque MHC class I sequences for which the predicted protein sequences identical throughout their B and F binding pockets to Mamu-A1*001:01 and Mamu-A3*13:03, respectively. This is important because Mamu-A1*001:01 and Mamu-A3*13:03 are associated with longer survival and lower set-point viral load in simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected rhesus monkeys. These findings have implications for the evolutionary history of Vietnamese-origin cynomolgus macaque as well as for the use of this model in SIV/SHIV (a virus combining parts of the HIV and SIV genomes) research.

Abstract
Esculentoside A (EsA) is a saponin isolated from the roots of Phytolacca esculenta. Previous experiments have shown that it has strong antiinflammatory effects. To investigate the mechanism of anti-inflammatory effects of esculentoside A (EsA),[3H] arachidonic acid (AA) prelabelled murine macrophage and radioimmunoassay were used to test the effect of EsA on the total release of AA and prostaglandin E2 in culture supernatants. The results showed that EsA had no significant effect on the total release of AA from murine macrophages. EsA (2.5-10 μmol/l), from unstimulated murine peritoneal macrophages and rabbit synovial cells, could decrease the production of
prostaglandin E2. In A23187 and LPS-treated macrophages and synovial cells, EsA (10 μmol/l) could significantly decrease the prostaglandin E2 production. These results confirmed that EsA exerted an inhibitory effect on prostaglandin E2 production from murine macrophages and rabbit synovial cells.

Abstract
We have performed a detailed density functional theory study on the structural and electronic properties of Na(n)C(60)(-) (n = 1-12) clusters. The calculated vertical detachment energies show good agreement with the experimental data, which confirms the 3p (n = 3p) oscillation rule. The oscillation can be attributed to the combination of the charge depletion distribution induced by removing electrons and the number of the sodium atoms in direct contact with the fullerene. Based on the structural and electronic properties, the Na atoms can be categorized into two groups, one is for the metal atoms directly bonded to the fullerene surface, and the other one is for those without bonding to the fullerene. The Na atoms in group one would donate electrons to both the fullerene and the Na atoms in group two. As the total number of the sodium atoms increases, the number of Na atoms in group one would continue increasing till the size n = 3p - 1 to meet a shoulder from n = 3p - 1 to n = 3p, which accounts for the maximum vertical detachment energy at the size of n = 3p as drawn from the detailed electronic property studies.

Abstract
Body measurement traits, influenced by genes and environmental factors, play numerous important roles in the value assessment of productivity and economy. There has been some indication that ANAPC13 influences adult height. We used PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing technology to identify polymorphisms in the ANAPC13 gene. A polymorphism in intron 1 (A > G at base 17) was identified and an additional polymorphic site (C > T at base 42) was also uncovered, which accompanied the previous polymorphism in more than 98% of the subjects. The two novel polymorphisms in exon 1 were assayed and potential associations with body measurement traits were evaluated in 404 individuals. Three genotypes were detected in the study group, named AACC, AGCT and GGTT. Significant differences were observed between genotypes AACC and AGCT for body length, withers height, hip height, hip width, heart girth, pin bone width. However, no associations were found among any genotypes and chest depth. We conclude that polymorphisms and mutations in non-coding regions of the ANAPC13 gene significantly affect body measurement traits.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Response to the lipid-lowering effect of the statins is known to show significant inter-individual variability. Our aim was to investigate whether genetic variants of the CYP3A5 gene, CYP7A1 gene and ABCG8 gene influence the lipid-lowering response to atorvastatin. METHODS One hundred and seven unrelated Chinese Han hypercholesterolemia patients were recruited from among the inpatients and outpatients of Tangshan Gongren Hospital of Hebei, China. Three polymorphisms of the CYP3A5 gene, seven polymorphisms of the CYP7A1 gene and seven polymorphisms of the ABCG8 gene were selected using a tagging single-nucleotide polymorphism (tSNP) strategy and genotyped using Snapshot platform. RESULTS SNP rs8192870, located in the first intron of the CYP7A1 gene, was associated with the LDL level lowering response to atorvastatin. The LDL levels were reduced by 27.89% for the GG/GA genotype carriers and 35.26% for the AA genotype carriers, respectively, after atorvastatin treatment (P = 0.021). The significance remained after adjusting for covariates. In addition, we observed that rs4148222 in the 11th intron of the ABCG8 gene significantly associated with the baseline levels of HDL (P = 0.046). WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION CYP7A1 gene polymorphism influences the LDL-lowering effects of atorvastatin in Chinese Hans. If replicated by others, identification of the tagged functional variant would be needed.

Abstract
We have found that daily subcutaneous injection with a maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of the mGluR2/3 agonist LY379268 (20mg/kg) beginning at 4 weeks dramatically improves the phenotype in R6/2 mice. For example, we observed normalization of motor function in distance traveled, speed, the infrequency of pauses, and the ability to locomote in a straight line, and a rescue of a 15-20% striatal neuron loss at 10 weeks. As acute LY379268 treatment is known to increase cortical BDNF production, and BDNF is known to be beneficial for striatal neurons, we investigated if the benefit of daily LY379268 in R6/2 mice for striatal projection neurons was associated with increases in corticostriatal BDNF, with assessments done at 10 weeks of age after daily MTD treatment since the fourth week of life. We found that LY379268 increased BDNF expression in layer 5 neurons in motor cortex, which project to striatum, partly rescued a preferential loss of enkephalinergic striatal neurons, and enhanced substance P (SP) expression by SP striatal projection neurons. The enhanced survival of enkephalinergic striatal neurons was correlated with the cortical BDNF increase, but the enhanced SP expression by SP striatal neurons was not. Thus, LY379268 may protect the two main striatal projection neuron types by different mechanisms, enkephalinergic neurons by the trophic benefit of BDNF, and SP neurons by a mechanism not involving BDNF. The SP neuron benefit may perhaps instead involve the anti-excitotoxic action of mGluR2/3 receptor agonists.

Abstract
CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBPα) is an essential transcription factor, regulating the differentiation of adipocytes. We cloned the complete open reading frame of C/EBPα gene of Qinchuan cattle and analyzed its protein structures and expression profile in 15 tissues via DNA cloning, sequencing and RT-PCR. Analysis of the putative protein sequences revealed that C/EBPα consists of alpha helices, random coils and a few extended strands. A significant transmembrane structure was observed in amino acid region 233 to 252. A basic leucine zipper domain was also found in amino acid region 277 to 340, which is characteristic of C/EBPs. Homologous comparison with various species indicated that the C/EBPα gene of Qinchuan cattle shares 97, 95, 94, 94, and 93% similarity in amino acid sequences with Sus scrofa, Homo sapiens, Rattus norvegicus, Oryctolagus cuniculus, and Mus musculus, respectively, implying strong sequence conservation of C/EBPα during evolution. RT-PCR revealed that the mRNA expression level of bovine C/EBPα gene in subcutaneous fat is much higher than that in the other 14 tissues, and the relative quantity in fat tissue increases with cattle age.

Abstract
Excitotoxic injury to striatum by dysfunctional cortical input or aberrant glutamate uptake may contribute to Huntington's disease (HD) pathogenesis. Since corticostriatal terminals possess mGluR2/3 autoreceptors, whose activation dampens glutamate release, we tested the ability of the mGluR2/3 agonist LY379268 to improve the phenotype in R6/2 HD mice with 120-125 CAG repeats. Daily subcutaneous injection of a maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of LY379268 (20mg/kg) had no evident adverse effects in WT mice, and diverse benefits in R6/2 mice, both in a cohort of mice tested behaviorally until the end of R6/2 lifespan and in a cohort sacrificed at 10weeks of age for blinded histological analysis. MTD LY379268 yielded a significant 11% increase in R6/2 survival, an improvement on rotarod, normalization and/or improvement in locomotor parameters measured in open field (activity, speed, acceleration, endurance, and gait), a rescue of a 15-20% cortical and striatal neuron loss, normalization of SP striatal neuron neurochemistry, and to a lesser extent enkephalinergic striatal neuron neurochemistry. Deficits were greater in male than female R6/2 mice, and drug benefit tended to be greater in males. The improvements in SP striatal neurons, which facilitate movement, are consistent with the improved movement in LY379268-treated R6/2 mice. Our data indicate that mGluR2/3 agonists may be particularly useful for ameliorating the morphological, neurochemical and motor defects observed in HD.

Abstract
Near-infrared radiation around 1000 nm generated from the interaction of a high-density MeV electron beam, obtained by impinging an intense ultrashort laser pulse on a solid target, with a metal grating is observed experimentally. Theoretical modeling and particle-in-cell simulation suggest that the radiation is caused by the Smith-Purcell mechanism. The results here indicate that tunable terahertz radiation with tens GV/m field strength can be achieved by using appropriate grating parameters.

Abstract
Qinchuan is a red or yellow draft and beef breed in China. In order to identify a predictor of carcass traits on the basis of associations between carcass traits and gene polymorphism, variation in the bovine chemerin gene was investigated using PCR-single-strand conformational polymorphism and DNA sequencing. An SNP of A868G located in exon 2 of the Bos taurus chemerin gene was detected in 716 samples of six breeds (Jiaxian red, Luxi, Nan yang, Qinchuan, Simmental and Luxi crossbred steers, and Xia'nan), all in China, and three genotypes (AA, AG and GG) were found. Based on the χ(2) test, the AA/AG/GG genotype frequencies of all six breeds were found to be in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. A possible association of A868G with some carcass traits was investigated in 106 Qinchuan cattle. Animals with the AG genotype were found to have significantly lower mean loin eye area and meat tenderness compared to those with the AA and GG genotypes. However, there was no significant association between any individual haplotype and backfat thickness, water holding capacity or marbling score. We suggest that A868G could be used as a molecular marker in marker-assisted selection for carcass traits.

Abstract
Using PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing technology, we examined the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the bovine MyoG gene with body measurement traits in 779 individuals of six native Chinese cattle breeds, namely Luxi, Luxi × Simmental crossbred, Nanyang, Xia'nan, Jiaxian red, and Qinchuan. A novel SNP, T314C, was detected. Allelic frequencies of MyoG-T/C in the six breeds were 0.8308/0.1692, 0.8774/0.1226, 0.8021/0.1979, 0.8209/0.1791, 0.8630/0.1370, 0.8044/0.1956, respectively. Least squares analysis revealed a significant (P < 0.05) association of the MyoG SNP with rump length in four breeds (Luxi, Xia'nan, Jiaxian red, and Qinchuan), with hucklebone width in three breeds (Luxi × Simmental crossbred, Nanyang and Xia'nan), with waist height in two breeds (Luxi × Simmental crossbred and Nanyang) and with body length in the Luxi breed. We conclude that the MyoG SNP has potential as a genetic marker for economically relevant body measurement traits in native Chinese cattle breeds.

Abstract
The myogenic determination 1 (MyoD1) gene is a member of the MyoD gene family. It encodes for skeletal muscle-specific transcription factors containing highly conserved basic helix-loop-helix regions that perform important roles in the initiation, maintenance, and regulation of phenotypic traits. We investigated a new single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the MyoD1 gene to evaluate whether this polymorphism affects meat quality traits in five Chinese indigenous cattle breeds, namely Qinchuan (QC), Xia-Nan (XN), Nan-yang (NY), Luxi (LX), and Jia-xian red (JXR). A C→G transversion at position 624 was detected in exon 1 of the MyoD1 gene; it causes an amino acid substitution ((624)serine/(624)cysteine). Least squares analysis showed that this SNP is not significantly associated with back fat thickness, eye muscle area, intramuscular fat, or marbling. The A/B allelic frequencies in the five breeds were 0.810/0.189, 0.779/0.220, 0.768/0.231, 0.820/0.180, and 0.801/0.198, respectively. Based on the χ(2) test, the genotype distributions of four cattle breeds (LX, NY, QC, and XN) did not agree with Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P < 0.05); one breed (JXR) did not deviate significantly from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05). The genotypic frequencies among all five cattle breeds showed moderate diversity (0.25 < polymorphism information content < 0.5). We concluded that the C624G SNP of the MyoD1 gene does not influence meat quality traits in indigenous Chinese cattle breeds; however, this SNP could be included in breed composition and population admixture analyses due to the marked differences in allelic frequencies among these five breeds.
