Abstract
New measurements are presented for charged hadron azimuthal correlations at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 62.4 and 200 GeV. They are compared to earlier measurements obtained at (square root)s(NN) = 130 GeV and in Pb + Pb collisions at (square root)s(NN) = 17.2 GeV. Sizeable anisotropies are observed with centrality and transverse momentum (pT) dependence characteristic of elliptic flow (upsilon2). For a broad range of centralities, the observed magnitudes and trends of the differential anisotropy, upsilon2(pT), change very little over the collision energy range (square root)s(NN) = 62-200 GeV, indicating saturation of the excitation function for upsilon2 at these energies. Such a saturation may be indicative of the dominance of a very soft equation of state for (square root)s(NN) approximately 60-200 GeV.

Abstract
The first measurement of direct photons in Au + Au collisions at (square root)S(NN) = 200 GeV is presented. The direct photon signal is extracted as a function of the Au + Au collision centrality and compared to next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. The direct photon yield is shown to scale with the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions for all centralities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori infection prevents the occurrence of the tolerance phenomenon of Histamine-2 (H2) receptor antagonists. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease develops in some cases with the restoration of acid secretion after H. pylori eradication therapy. AIM To clarify the mechanisms of H2 receptor restoration after the eradication of H. pylori on parietal cells. METHODS We enrolled 80 consecutive asymptomatic male patients with H. pylori infection, having chronic gastritis with or without the presence of peptic ulcers. Biopsy specimens from the greater curvatures at the mid-corpus of the stomach were obtained endoscopically from all subjects before and 12 weeks after the eradication of H. pylori. Degrees of gastric atrophy were evaluated by serum pepsinogen levels. The amounts of mRNA expression of H2 receptor were evaluated in each subject's gastric mucosa by real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS H2 receptor mRNA expression levels significantly correlated with serum pepsinogens I and II ratios. The expression level of H2 receptor mRNA was lower in subjects with hypergastrinemia. The median expression level of H2 receptor after H. pylori eradication was threefold greater than prior to treatment. In addition, its restoration became more pronounced in subjects with severe gastric atrophy. However, a comparatively low restoration of H2 receptor mRNA was found in subjects with hypergastrinemia. CONCLUSIONS H2 receptor mRNA levels decrease with the progression of gastric atrophy induced by H. pylori infection, and are restored after H. pylori eradication. Such expression levels of H2 receptor may explain a part of the tolerance phenomenon to H2 receptor antagonists.

Abstract
We report a case with pericardial diverticulum in the mediastinum. A 64-year-old woman visited our hospital because of cough and dyspnea. Chest X-ray showed a smooth-bordered mass in the right superior mediastinum and computed tomography (CT) showed a homogeneous cystic mass in the paratracheal area. During right mini-thoracotomy, a thin-walled cystic lesion was found involving the trachea, the superior vena cava, and the azygos vein. The cyst extended a duct toward the pericardium. We performed total excision and pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a pericardial diverticulum. Mini-thoracotomy provides an effective and minimally invasive means of excising the mediastinal mass, relieving symptoms, and allowing pathological examination.

Abstract
Monitoring the expression of immediate early genes (IEGs) is useful for following stress-induced cellular responses in the neuroendocrine system. We have examined the transcriptional activities of four IEGs (c-fos, junB, NGFI-A and NGFI-B) and of the arginine vasopressin (AVP) gene in the hypothalamic paraventicular (PVN) and supraoptic nuclei (SON) of rats after acute osmotic stimuli, using in situ hybridization histochemistry. After intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of hypertonic saline (2% body weight, 900 mOsm/kg), the expression levels of all IEG mRNAs were increased significantly both in the PVN and SON at as early as 10 min, peaked at 30 min and remained elevated until 60 min. The expression of AVP heteronuclear (hn)RNA also peaked at 30 min, and remained elevated until 180 min. Thirty min after i.p. administration of hypertonic saline (600 mOsm/kg), the expression levels of all IEG mRNAs in the PVN and SON were significantly increased in comparison with those after i.p. administration of isotonic saline (290 mOsm/kg). Regression analysis revealed that expression levels of the IEG mRNAs and AVP hnRNA were positively correlated with the plasma concentration of sodium, and the rates of increase of the expression levels of all IEG mRNAs were similar. The expression levels of all IEG mRNAs examined are useful markers for following the changes of the AVP gene transcription in the PVN and SON after acute osmotic stimuli in rats.

Abstract
The production of deuterons and antideuterons in the transverse momentum range 1.1<p(T)<4.3 GeV/c at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at square root of s(NN)=200 GeV has been studied by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. A coalescence analysis, comparing the deuteron and antideuteron spectra with that of proton and antiproton, has been performed. The coalescence probability is equal for both deuterons and antideuterons and it increases as a function of p(T), which is consistent with an expanding collision zone. Comparing (anti)proton yields, p /p=0.73+/-0.01, with (anti)deuteron yields, d /d=0.47+/-0.03, we estimate that n /n=0.64+/-0.04. The nucleon phase space density is estimated from the coalescence measurement.

Cyclosporin A inhibits the early phase of NF-κB/RelA activation induced by CD28 costimulatory signaling to reduce the IL-2 expression in human peripheral T cells. Int Immunopharmacol 2005; 5:699-710. Abstract
Cyclosporin A (CsA) inhibits interleukin (IL)-2 production, activation and proliferation of human peripheral T cells (HPTC) costimulated with simultaneous engagement of T cell receptor (TCR)/CD3 and CD28. We demonstrated that 10 ng/ml CsA, which reduced the proliferation of HPTC costimulated with anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 by half, prevented NF-AT and NF-kappaB from migrating into the nucleus. Whereas CsA added even 30 min after the costimulation caused NF-AT to remain in the cytoplasm, the delayed addition of CsA could not prevent NF-kappaB from translocating into the nucleus. CsA, which was added to HPTC simultaneously with the engagement of both CD3 and CD28 or the 1-h-delayed engagement of CD28 after prior TCR/CD3-triggering, inhibited NF-kappaB p65/RelA from binding to the target DNA fragment, followed by reduction of HPTC proliferation in response to the costimulation. When CsA was added 30 min after the delayed engagement of CD28 following the prior engagement of TCR/CD3, these inhibitory effects were diminished. Antisense NF-kappaB p65/RelA oligonucleotides inhibited p65/RelA mRNA expression, diminished IL-2 mRNA expression in the costimulated HPTC and reduced HPTC proliferation to the same extent as CsA added simultaneously with the costimulation. The CsA- or antisense p65/RelA oligonucleotide-induced reduction in the proliferation of costimulated HPTC was overcome by the addition of exogenous IL-2. These findings indicate that the major effects of CsA on the early phase of CD28-mediated costimulation in the presence of TCR/CD3 signaling are to inhibit NF-kappaB/RelA from translocating into the nucleus and binding to the target DNA sequence in the IL-2 gene promoter region, which induces IL-2 expression leading to HPTC proliferation.

Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured midrapidity transverse momentum spectra (0.4<p(T)<4.0 GeV/c) of single electrons as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. Contributions from photon conversions and Dalitz decays of light neutral mesons are measured by introducing a thin (1.7% X0) converter into the PHENIX acceptance and are statistically removed. The subtracted nonphotonic electron spectra are primarily due to the semileptonic decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks, mainly charm at lower p(T). For all centralities, the charm production cross section is found to scale with the nuclear overlap function, T(AA). For minimum-bias collisions the charm cross section per binary collision is N(cc )/T(AA)=622+/-57(stat)+/-160(syst) microb.

Abstract
We report on charged hadron production in deuteron-gold reactions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. Our measurements in the deuteron direction cover 1.4<eta<2.2, referred to as forward rapidity, and in the gold direction -2.0<eta<-1.4, referred to as backward rapidity, and a transverse momentum range p(T)=0.5-4.0 GeV/c. We compare the relative yields for different deuteron-gold collision centrality classes. We observe a suppression relative to binary collision scaling at forward rapidity, sensitive to low momentum fraction (x) partons in the gold nucleus, and an enhancement at backward rapidity, sensitive to high momentum fraction partons in the gold nucleus.

Incidence of insulin resistance in obese subjects in a rural Japanese population: the Tanno and Sobetsu study. Diabetes Obes Metab 2005; 7:83-7. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although it is well known that obesity is closely related to insulin resistance, the incidence of the development of insulin resistance in people with obesity is not known. In this study, we investigated the incidence of insulin resistance in citizens of two rural communities in Japan. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The subjects were 102 men and 126 women over the age of 30 years selected from 1035 citizens who had undergone medical examinations in the towns of Tanno and Sobetsu, Hokkaido, in 1991 and 1998. Those who were on medication for hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, coronary heart disease and cerebral vessel disease were excluded. The simple index to determine insulin resistance [i.e. homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-R) > or = 1.73] was used, and subjects who were determined to be positive for insulin resistance according to this index in 1991 were also excluded in order to determine the incidence of insulin resistance in subjects who had no abnormalities other than obesity. The systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), triglyceride level, high-density lipoprotein level, blood sugar level, serum insulin value and HOMA-R were measured in all subjects in 1991 and in 1998. Moreover, the subjects were divided into two groups according to BMI, a normal group consisting of subjects with BMI < 25 and an obesity group consisting of subjects with BMI > or = 25. We also compared the incidences of insulin resistance in normal and obesity groups of subjects who were newly determined to be positive for insulin resistance on the basis of data obtained from medical examinations conducted in 1998. RESULTS The incidence of insulin resistance was significantly higher in the obesity group than in the normal group (25.0 vs. 4.5%). The results of logistic regression analysis showed that obesity was closely related to insulin resistance and that the relative risk of development of insulin resistance adjusted for age, sex, SBP, FPG and HDL was 3.193 (95% CI 1.085-9.401). CONCLUSIONS The incidence of insulin resistance was significantly higher in the obesity group than in the normal group in this study, suggesting that improvement in obesity is important for prevention of the occurrence of type 2 diabetes or atherosclerotic disease based on insulin resistance.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the double longitudinal spin asymmetry in inclusive pi(0) production in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV. The data were taken at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider with average beam polarizations of 0.27. The measurements are the first in a program to study the longitudinal spin structure of the proton, using strongly interacting probes, at collider energies. The asymmetry is presented for transverse momenta 1-5 GeV/c at midrapidity, where next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamic (NLO pQCD) calculations well describe the unpolarized cross section. The observed asymmetry is small and is compared to a NLO pQCD calculation with a range of polarized gluon distributions.

Abstract
Bose-Einstein correlations of identically charged pion pairs were measured by the PHENIX experiment at midrapidity in Au + Au collisions at square root s(NN)=200 GeV. The Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters were determined as a function of the transverse momentum of the pair and as a function of the centrality of the collision. Using the standard core-halo partial Coulomb fits, and a new parametrization which constrains the Coulomb fraction as determined from the unlike-sign pion correlation, the ratio R(out)/R(side) is within 0.8-1.1 for 0.25< <k(T)> <1.2 GeV/c. The centrality dependence of all radii is well described by a linear scaling in N(1/3)(part), and R(out)/R(side) for <k(T)> approximately 0.45 GeV/c is approximately constant at unity as a function of centrality.

Abstract
We evaluated the optimal conditions for blood sampling for hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs) as estimated by the immature information program of the SE-9000 automated hematology analyzer. The HPC count was most stable when the blood samples were incubated at room temperature with ethylene-diaminetetraacetic acid dipotassium (EDTA-2K) as an anticoagulant. The HPC count should, however, be measured within 4 h after blood collection, even under optimal conditions. In contrast, the CD34+ cell count estimated by flow cytometric analysis was stable for at least 21 h after the blood samples were incubated with EDTA-2K at room temperature or 4 degrees C. When appropriate blood samples were used, the HPC count in the peripheral blood significantly correlated with the CD34+ cell count in the peripheral blood and in the apheresis yields (r = 0.798 and 0.635, respectively); therefore, the HPC count is a reliable predictor for initiation of apheresis procedures to obtain sufficient HPCs for peripheral blood stem cell transplantation.

Abstract
Event-by-event fluctuations of the average transverse momentum of produced particles near midrapidity have been measured by the PHENIX Collaboration in square root of (sNN)=200 GeV Au+Au, and p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The fluctuations are observed to be in excess of the expectation for statistically independent particle emission for all centralities. The excess fluctuations exhibit a dependence on both the centrality of the collision and on the pT range over which the average is calculated. Both the centrality and pT dependence can be well reproduced by a simulation of random particle production with the addition of contributions from hard-scattering processes.

Constitutively activated phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase primes platelets from patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia for thrombopoietin-induced aggregation. Leukemia 2004; 18:1127-37. Abstract
In this study, we examined the effect of thrombopoietin (TPO) on the aggregation of platelets from 40 patients with myeloproliferative disorders (MPDs), including 17 patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia in the chronic phase (CML-CP), 10 with polycythemia vera, 10 with essential thrombocythemia, and three with myelofibrosis. TPO by itself dose-dependently induced the aggregation of platelets from patients with CML-CP but not from those with other MPDs or with CML-CP in cytogenetical complete remission. The expression of CD63 in CML-CP platelets was induced by TPO treatment. Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) was constitutively activated in CML-CP platelets. Pretreatment with PI3-kinase inhibitors (wortmannin and LY294002) dose-dependently inhibited TPO-induced aggregation of CML-CP platelets. The Abl kinase inhibitor imatinib mesylate and the Jak inhibitor AG490 suppressed TPO-induced aggregation of CML-CP platelets. Pretreatment with imatinib mesylate, but not with AG490, inhibited the activity of PI3-kinase in CML-CP platelets. In addition, tyrosine phosphorylation of Jak2 was undetected in CML-CP platelets before TPO treatment. These findings indicate that the constitutive activation of PI3-kinase primes CML-CP platelets for the aggregation induced by TPO, and that Bcr-Abl, but not Jak family protein tyrosine kinases, are involved in the constitutive activation of PI3-kinase in CML-CP platelets.

Abstract
J/psi production has been measured in proton-proton collisions at square root of s=200 GeV over a wide rapidity and transverse momentum range by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Distributions of the rapidity and transverse momentum, along with measurements of the mean transverse momentum and total production cross section are presented and compared to available theoretical calculations. The total J/psi cross section is 4.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.6(syst)+/-0.4(abs) mu b. The mean transverse momentum is 1.80+/-0.23(stat)+/-0.16(syst) GeV/c.

Abstract
The invariant differential cross section for inclusive neutral-pion production in p+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV has been measured at midrapidity (|eta|<0.35) over the range 1<p(T) less, similar 14 GeV/c by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Predictions of next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations are consistent with these measurements. The precision of our result is sufficient to differentiate between prevailing gluon-to-pion fragmentation functions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Experience of a few hypoglycaemic patients with liver disease and receiving levothyroxine suggested to us that the prevalence of hypoglycaemia might be higher in such patients. The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether the prevalence of hypoglycaemia this was actually the case. METHODS This study was a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of a medical computerized database and/or written reports from our university hospital. Patients with primary liver disease who were admitted to our hospital between April 1998 and August 2000 were divided into two groups; the first group received levothyroxine and the second group did not. The patients in the second group were selected from three different time periods within the period shown. The prevalence of hypoglycaemia (blood glucose level <70 mg/dL) was compared between the two groups. RESULTS The prevalence of hypoglycaemia was significantly higher in the group receiving levothyroxine compared with the group not receiving levothyroxine (four of eight patients (50.0%) vs. three of 59 (5.1%), P = 0.003, Fisher's exact test). CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that levothyroxine may be a risk factor for hypoglycaemia in patients with liver disease. While a larger study, perhaps with an alternative study design is needed to confirm this, and to investigate possible mechanisms of effect, it would be prudent to monitor the blood glucose level of such patients closely.

Abstract
The anisotropy parameter (v(2)), the second harmonic of the azimuthal particle distribution, has been measured with the PHENIX detector in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV for identified and inclusive charged particle production at central rapidities (|eta|<0.35) with respect to the reaction plane defined at high rapidities (|eta|=3-4 ). We observe that the v(2) of mesons falls below that of (anti)baryons for p(T)>2 GeV/c, in marked contrast to the predictions of a hydrodynamical model. A quark-coalescence model is also investigated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The circulating level of KL-6/MUC1 is a sensitive marker for various interstitial lung diseases. Previous case reports have suggested that KL-6 may also be increased in some patients with drug induced pneumonitis. A study was undertaken to determine whether serum KL-6 could be a marker for particular types of drug induced pneumonitis. METHODS The findings of high resolution computed tomographic (HRCT) chest scans of 30 patients with drug induced pneumonitis were reviewed separately by two independent observers. The pneumonitis was classified into four predominant patterns: widespread bilateral consolidation (diffuse alveolar damage, DAD; n=7), fibrosis with or without consolidation (chronic interstitial pneumonia, CIP; n=11), consolidation without fibrosis (bronchiolitis obliterans organising pneumonia or eosinophilic pneumonia, BOOP/EP; n=8), and diffuse ground glass opacities without fibrosis (hypersensitivity pneumonitis, HP; n=4). Serum KL-6 levels were measured by a sandwich enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The overall sensitivity of serum KL-6 in detecting drug induced lung disease was 53.3%, which was lower than its sensitivity in detecting other interstitial lung diseases. However, the KL-6 level was increased in most patients with a DAD or CIP pattern (16/18; 88.9%) and was closely correlated with their clinical course. In contrast, serum KL-6 levels were within the normal range in all patients with a BOOP/EP or HP pattern. CONCLUSIONS Particular patterns detected by HRCT scanning, such as DAD and CIP but not the BOOP/EP or HP patterns, are associated with increased circulating KL-6 levels in drug induced pneumonitis. Serum KL-6 levels may reflect the clinical activity of the particular disorders.

Abstract
We report on the yield of protons and antiprotons, as a function of centrality and transverse momentum, in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In central collisions at intermediate transverse momenta (1.5<p(T)<4.5 GeV/c) a significant fraction of all produced particles are protons and antiprotons. They show a centrality-scaling behavior different from that of pions. The pmacr;/pi and p/pi ratios are enhanced compared to peripheral Au+Au, p+p, and e(+)e(-) collisions. This enhancement is limited to p(T)<5 GeV/c as deduced from the ratio of charged hadrons to pi(0) measured in the range 1.5<p(T)<9 GeV/c.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The present study was conducted to examine the effect of activin A on activation of rat pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs). METHODS PSCs were prepared from rat pancreas using collagenase digestion and centrifugation with Nycodenz gradient. Activation of PSCs was examined by determining smooth muscle actin expression with western blotting. The presence of activin A receptors in PSCs was investigated by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), western blotting, and immunocytochemistry. Expression of activin A and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) mRNA was examined by RT-PCR. Activin A and TGF-beta peptide concentrations were examined with ELISA. Existence of activin A peptide in PSCs was investigated by immunocytochemistry. Collagen secretion was determined by Sirius red dye binding. RESULTS Activin A receptors I and IIa were present in PSCs. PSCs expressed activin A mRNA and secreted activin A. Activin A enhanced PSC activation and collagen secretion in a dose dependent manner. TGF-beta and activin A increased each other's secretion and mRNA expression of PSCs. Follistatin decreased TGF-beta mRNA expression and TGF-beta secretion of PSCs, and inhibited both PSC activation and collagen secretion. CONCLUSION Activin A is an autocrine activator of PSCs. Follistatin can inhibit PSC activation and collagen secretion by blocking autocrined activin A and decreasing TGF-beta expression and secretion of PSCs.

Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons with p(T)<8 GeV/c and neutral pions with p(T)<10 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at BNL RHIC in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The measured yields are compared to those in p+p collisions at the same sqrt[s(NN)] scaled up by the number of underlying nucleon-nucleon collisions in d+Au. The yield ratio does not show the suppression observed in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Instead, there is a small enhancement in the yield of high momentum particles.

Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of neutral pions in the range 1<p(T)<10 GeV/c have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at BNL RHIC in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The pi(0) multiplicity in central reactions is significantly below the yields measured at the same sqrt[s(NN)] in peripheral Au+Au and p+p reactions scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. For the most central bin, the suppression factor is approximately 2.5 at p(T)=2 GeV/c and increases to approximately 4-5 at p(T) approximately 4 GeV/c. At larger p(T), the suppression remains constant within errors. The deficit is already apparent in semiperipheral reactions and increases smoothly with centrality.

Abstract
In ovariectomized Wistar rats, 1- or 2-mm wide knife cuts were placed in a coronal plane from the surface of the cortex to the floor of the cranial cavity to interrupt posterior efferents of the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (VMN). Sham-operated females had the same knife lowered to a depth of 7 mm. Ovariectomized nonoperated females were also used. After recovery, all rats received a single injection of 2 microg oestradiol benzoate, and were tested 48 h later for male and female sexual behaviour and partner preference. When placed with highly receptive stimulus females, the rats with the 2-mm cut showed a significantly higher incidence of mounting with ejaculatory thrusts than any other groups. When placed with stud males, 1-mm cut, as well as sham-operated females, had increased lordosis quotients. Similarly, both 1-mm and 2-mm cuts and sham operation enhanced the incidence of ear wiggling. Despite the display of a transsexual behaviour (i.e. vigorous mounting), all females with the cut showed heterosexual partner preference. Thus, the cut in the present study removed the inhibitory neural effect on mounting, which presumably descends from the VMN. In the absence of this inhibition, minute amounts of oestrogen sufficed to induce vigorous mounting. Sham operation in the present study appeared to interfere with certain inhibitory neural circuitry for lordosis.

Abstract
For T cell activation, two signals are required, i.e., a T cell receptor (TCR)/CD3-mediated main signal and a CD28-mediated costimulatory signal. CD28 binds to its ligand (CD80 or CD86) and transduces the most important costimulatory signal. The cytoplasmic domain of the CD28 molecule, composed of 41 amino acids, does not contain any intrinsic enzyme activity. The cytoplasmic domain of CD28 is remarkably conserved among species and is associated with a number of signaling molecules that affect the main signal. We report here that a tyrosine phosphorylated 100-kDa protein (ppl00) was coupled to the CD28 cytoplasmic domain in Jurkat and human peripheral T cells. The pp100 was distinguished from other CD28 associated molecules such as Vav, STAT5, PI 3-kinase, Valosin-containing protein (VCP), Nucleolin, Gab2 (Grb2-associated binding protein 2), and STAT6. The tyrosine phosphorylation of pp100 coprecipitated with CD28 was enhanced by CD3 stimulation by the specific antibody, tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor and PKC activator. Tyrosine phosphorylation of pp100 was attenuated by the prior addition of PKC inhibitor. These findings indicate that pp100 is a novel tyrosine phosphorylated protein coupled to CD28 under continuous control of tyrosine phosphatases and might play a role in T cell activation augmented by a TCR/CD3-mediated main signal.

Abstract
Two-particle azimuthal correlation functions are presented for charged hadrons produced in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (sqrt [s(NN)]=130 GeV). The measurements permit determination of elliptic flow without event-by-event estimation of the reaction plane. The extracted elliptic flow values (v2) show significant sensitivity to both the collision centrality and the transverse momenta of emitted hadrons, suggesting rapid thermalization and relatively strong velocity fields. When scaled by the eccentricity of the collision zone epsilon, the scaled elliptic flow shows little or no dependence on centrality for charged hadrons with relatively low p(T). A breakdown of this epsilon scaling is observed for charged hadrons with pT >1.0 GeV/c.

Abstract
We examined correlations between the frequency of insulin resistance and the accumulation of coronary risk factors in residents of rural comities in Japanese, using simple criteria for determination of insulin resistance based on evaluation by the euglycaemic-hyperinsulinaemic glucose clamp (GC) method. The subjects were 376 men and 589 women living in two rural communities in Japan. We measured body mass index (BMI), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), triglyceride (TG), HDL cholesterol (HDL), and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-R). Correlations between HOMA-R and those parameters were examined. To assess the existence of insulin resistance in these subjects, we used a practical index based on the GC method. The subjects with value of HOMA-R >or= 1.73 have insulin resistance. In addition, the HOMA-R was divided into five quantiles based on the frequency distribution (0.60 or below, from 0.61 to 0.82, from 0.83 to 1.18, from 1.19 to 1.69, and 1.70 or higher), to examine the concentration of risk factors in each group. In total, 74 (19.6%) of the men and 119 (20.3%) of the women had insulin resistance (HOMA-R >or= 1.73). It was found that the higher the HOMA-R, the higher was the number of coronary risk factors, such as hypertension, obesity, hypertriglyceridaemia and hypo HDL cholesterolaemia. The number of coronary risk factors was particular high in subjects with HOMA-R >or= 1.70. HOMA-R in the case of no glucose loading is a useful and practical index for evaluation of insulin resistance and coronary risk factors in the epidemiological study.

Abstract
The results of radiosurgery for treatment of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer with brain metastasis as the initial relapse were evaluated. Twenty-three patients were included in the study. The dominant pathologic type was adenocarcinoma (56.5%). In the mean interval of 13.7 months (range, 3-52 months) between the lung operation and treatment of brain metastasis, a solitary lesion developed in 9 patients and multiple lesions developed in 14 patients. The modalities used for brain metastasis were gamma-knife radiation therapy (GKS) in nine patients, GKS plus operation in six, GKS plus whole brain radiation therapy (WBR) in two, operation plus WBR in two, operation only in one, WBR only in two, and no treatment in one. The 1- and 3-year survival rates after treatment of brain were 47.3% and 7.4%, respectively. The prognostic impact of stage and number of brain metastases was not clear. Primary tumor size and adjuvant chemotherapy after the lung operation significantly affected survival after the management of brain metastasis. The low invasive radiosurgery is beneficial in terms of improving the quality of life of patients.

Abstract
CD5+ diffuse large B-cell lymphoma(CD5+DLBCL) is known to have different characteristics than CD5-DLBCL and mantle cell lymphoma(MCL). 9 patients with CD5+DLBCL were reviewed, and the results were compared with those of 8 CD5-DLBCL and 3 cyclin D1+MCL patients. CD5+DLBCL was more closely related to many aggressive clinical features or parameters than CD5-DLBCL: 67% of the patients were older than 60 years, 67% with performance status > or = 2, 89% with serum lactate dehydrogenase level higher than normal, 78% with stage III/IV disease at diagnosis, and 78% with more than one extranodal lesion. The overall International Prognostic Index score for the patients with CD5+DLBCL was thus significantly higher than that for those with CD5-DLBCL. Immunophenotypically, CD5+DLBCL was characterized by CD5+CD10-CD19+CD20+CD21-CD23-cyclin D1-phenotype and the predominant expression of surface IgM. Of particular interest is that the survival rate of CD5+DLBCL patients was significantly inferior to that of patients with CD5-DLBCL. To further characterize CD5+DLBCL, we semi-quantified the CD5 expression in DLBCL cells. Our findings suggest that CD5+DLBCL may constitute a unique subgroup of DLBCL and, moreover, CD5+DLBCL may consist of several subgroups.

Abstract
We present results on the measurement of Lambda and Lambda(macro) production in Au+Au collisions at square root of (S (NN) = 130 GeV with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The transverse momentum spectra were measured for minimum bias and for the 5% most central events. The Lambda;/Lambda ratios are constant as a function of p(T) and the number of participants. The measured net Lambda density is significantly larger than predicted by models based on hadronic strings (e.g., HIJING) but in approximate agreement with models which include the gluon-junction mechanism.

Abstract
Data from Au + Au interactions at sqrt[s(NN)]=130 GeV, obtained with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, are used to investigate local net charge fluctuations among particles produced near midrapidity. According to recent suggestions, such fluctuations may carry information from the quark-gluon plasma. This analysis shows that the fluctuations are dominated by a stochastic distribution of particles, but are also sensitive to other effects, like global charge conservation and resonance decays.

Covered Gianturco stent for tracheal stricture: application of polychlorovinylidene and polyurethane as covering materials. Eur Radiol 2002; 11:1933-8. Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of thin membranes of polychlorovinylidene (PCV) or polyurethane (PU) as covering materials for Gianturco stents in the treatment of severe tracheal stricture caused by intraluminal tumor. Manufactured Gianturco stents covered with PCV or PU membrane were used to treat six malignant and one benign tracheal stricture. The initial results, complications, clinical follow-up, bronchoscopic findings, and three autopsy microscopic examinations were reviewed. Informed consent was obtained after the nature of the treatment had been fully explained before every procedure. The stents successfully dilated the tracheal strictures, providing immediate relief of respiratory symptoms in all patients with no major complications. During the follow-up period, the covering materials prevented tumor ingrowth until death or intraluminal granuloma formation. Autopsies proved that no histological change occurs in the tracheal mucosa in response to the presence of PCV or PU; however, ulcer formation occurred in one patient and penetration of the stent struts into the tracheal wall in two. Bloody sputum with ulcer formation, minimal granuloma formation at the distal end of the stent, and abnormal bacterial load in the sputum were long-term complications. The Gianturco stent covered with PCV or PU membrane is a useful option as a palliative treatment for malignant and an emergent salvage for benign tracheal stricture, because both materials are thinner and less voluminous than the others. However, the indications for its use are limited to patients with poor prognoses, because hemoptysis, granuloma formation, and bacterial propagation remain problematic.

Abstract
Identified pi(+/-), K(+/-), p, and (-)p transverse momentum spectra at midrapidity in sqrt[s(NN)] = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions were measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC as a function of collision centrality. Average transverse momenta increase with the number of participating nucleons in a similar way for all particle species. Within errors, all midrapidity particle yields per participant are found to be increasing with the number of participating nucleons. There is an indication that K(+/-), p, and (-)p yields per participant increase faster than the pi(+/-) yields. In central collisions at high transverse momenta (p(T) > or =2 GeV/c), (-)p and p yields are comparable to the pi(+/-) yields.

Abstract
Two-pion correlations in square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC have been measured over a broad range of pair transverse momentum k(T) by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC. The k(T) dependent transverse radii are similar to results from heavy-ion collisions at square root[s(NN)] = 4.1, 4.9, and 17.3 GeV, whereas the longitudinal radius increases monotonically with beam energy. The ratio of the outwards to sidewards transverse radii (R(out)/R(side)) is consistent with unity and independent of k(T).

Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra of electrons from Au+Au collisions at square root[s(NN)] = 130 GeV have been measured at midrapidity by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The spectra show an excess above the background from photon conversions and light hadron decays. The electron signal is consistent with that expected from semileptonic decays of charm. The yield of the electron signal dN(e)/dy for p(T) > 0.8 GeV/c is 0.025+/-0.004(stat)+/-0.010(syst) in central collisions, and the corresponding charm cross section is 380+/-60(stat)+/-200(syst) microb per binary nucleon-nucleon collision.

Abstract
Only 3 cases of aneurysm associated with the communicating artery between both distal posterior inferior cerebellar arteries (PICAs) have been reported in the literature. We present the 4th case of such an aneurysm arising from the communicating artery itself, which is unrelated to the arterial branches. A hypertensive 68-year-old man presented with a Hunt and Hess grade 4 subarachnoid hemorrhage. Angiographic studies revealed that the ruptured aneurysm arose from the fine communicating artery itself interconnecting both distal PICA vermian branches. The right PICA was absent and its vermian territory was supplied by the left PICA through this communicating artery. At surgery, a saccular aneurysm was noted which developed at the top of the arterial loop under the nodulus of the cerebellar vermis and was trapped. The actual prevalence and clinical significance of aneurism associated with the communicating artery interconnecting both PICAs are unknown, but defective embryonal development may lead to congenital vulnerability of the vascular wall, resulting in aneurysm formation.

Abstract
Transverse momentum spectra for charged hadrons and for neutral pions in the range 1 GeV/c<p(T)<5 GeV/c have been measured by the PHENIX experiment at RHIC in Au+Au collisions at root square[s(NN)] = 130 GeV. At high p(T) the spectra from peripheral nuclear collisions are consistent with scaling the spectra from p+p collisions by the average number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The spectra from central collisions are significantly suppressed when compared to the binary-scaled p+p expectation, and also when compared to similarly binary-scaled peripheral collisions, indicating a novel nuclear-medium effect in central nuclear collisions at RHIC energies.

Abstract
Activin A induces growth arrest of rat hepatocytes in vitro and in vivo. The alpha(1)-adrenergic agonist, norepinephrine (NE), enhances epidermal growth factor-stimulated DNA synthesis and inhibits activin A-induced growth inhibition, but the mechanisms of these actions are unclear. Smad proteins have recently been identified as intracellular signaling mediators of transforming growth factor-beta family members. In the present study, we explored how NE modulates the Smad signaling pathway in rat cultured hepatocytes. We demonstrate that NE inhibits activin A-induced nuclear accumulation of Smad2/3 and that NE rapidly induces inhibitory Smad7 mRNA expression. Infection of Smad7 adenovirus into rat hepatocytes inhibited activin A-induced nuclear accumulation of Smad2/3, enhanced epidermal growth factor-stimulated DNA synthesis, and abolished the growth inhibitory effect of activin A. We also demonstrated that the induction of Smad7 by NE is dependent on nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappa B). The amount of active NF-kappa B complex rapidly increased after NE treatment. Preincubation of the cells with an NF-kappa B pathway inhibitor N-tosyl-l-phenylalanine chloromethyl ketone or infection of the cells with an adenovirus expressing an I kappa B super-repressor (Ad5I kappa B) abolished the NE-induced Smad7 expression. These results indicate a mechanism of transmodulation between the Smad and trimeric G protein signaling pathways in rat hepatocytes.

Abstract
To maintain various T cell responses and immune equilibrium, activation signals triggered by T cell antigen receptor (TCR) must be regulated by inhibitory signals. Gab2, an adaptor protein of the insulin receptor substrate-1 family, has been shown to be involved in the downstream signaling from cytokine receptors. We investigated the functional role of Gab2 in TCR-mediated signal transduction. Gab2 was phosphorylated by ZAP-70 and co-precipitated with phosphoproteins, such as ZAP-70, LAT, and CD3zeta, upon TCR stimulation. Overexpression of Gab2 in Jurkat cells or antigen-specific T cell hybridomas resulted in the inhibition of NF-AT activation, interleukin-2 production, and tyrosine phosphorylation. The structure-function relationship of Gab2 was analyzed by mutants of Gab2. The Gab2 mutants lacking SHP-2-binding sites mostly abrogated the inhibitory activity of Gab2, but its inhibitory function was restored by fusing to active SHP-2 as a chimeric protein. A mutant with defective phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase binding capacity also impaired the inhibitory activity, and the pleckstrin homology domain-deletion mutant revealed a crucial function of the pleckstrin homology domain for localization to the plasma membrane. These results suggest that Gab2 is a substrate of ZAP-70 and functions as a switch molecule toward inhibition of TCR signal transduction by mediating the recruitment of inhibitory molecules to the TCR signaling complex.

Abstract
We have studied the effects of a defect in the p53 gene on spontaneous and radiation-induced somatic mutation frequencies in vivo by measuring T-cell receptor (TCR) and hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) mutant frequencies (MFs) in p53 deficient mice both before and after exposure to X-irradiation. In the absence of irradiation, the TCR and HPRT mutant frequencies were roughly two-fold higher in p53 null (-/-) mice than in wild-type (+/+) mice. Unexpectedly, the TCR and HPRT MFs were slightly lower in heterozygote p53 (+/-) than in wild-type (+/+) mice, however. After 2 weeks 2Gy whole body irradiation the TCR and HPRT MFs were about two-fold higher in the p53 null (-/-) and p53 (+/-) mice than in the wild-type. Taken together, these findings suggest that a defect in the p53 gene may lead to TCR and HPRT mutants being recovered at higher frequencies in both irradiated and unirradiated mice, but it should be emphasized that the effects we have observed are not particularly strong, albeit that they are statistically significant. Interestingly, several of the highest TCR MF values that we observed in the course of our experiments were recorded in p53 (-/-) animals that had developed thymomas and hence appeared to be cancer prone.

Abstract
In this study, we examined the molecular mechanism of erythropoietin-initiated signal transduction of erythroid differentiation through Src and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3-kinase). Antisense oligonucleotides against src but not lyn inhibited the formation of erythropoietin-dependent colonies derived from human bone marrow cells and erythropoietin-induced differentiation of K562 human erythroleukaemia cells. Antisense p85alpha oligonucleotide or LY294002, a selective inhibitor of PI3-kinase, independently inhibited the formation of erythropoietin-dependent colonies. In K562 cells, Src associated with PI3-kinase in response to erythropoietin. Antisense src RNA expression in K562 cells inhibited the erythropoietin-induced activation of PI3-kinase and its association with erythropoietin receptor. PP1, a selective inhibitor of the Src family, reduced erythropoietin-induced tyrosine phosphorylation of erythropoietin receptor and its association with PI3-kinase in F-36P human erythroleukaemia cells. The coexpression experiments and in vitro kinase assay further demonstrated that Src directly tyrosine-phosphorylated erythropoietin receptor, and associated with PI3-kinase. In vitro binding experiments proved that glutathione S-transferase-p85alpha N- or C-terminal SH2 domains independently bound to erythropoietin receptor, which was tyrosine-phosphorylated by Src. Taken together, Src transduces the erythropoietin-induced erythroid differentiation signals by regulating PI3-kinase activity.

Abstract
Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT) proteins are transcription factors activated by phosphorylation on tyrosine residues after cytokine stimulation. In erythropoietin receptor (EPOR)-mediated signaling, STAT5 is tyrosine-phosphorylated by EPO stimulation. Although Janus Kinase 2 (JAK2) is reported to play a crucial role in EPO-induced activation of STAT5, it is unclear whether JAK2 alone can tyrosine-phosphorylate STAT5 after EPO stimulation. Several studies indicate that STAT activation is caused by members of other families of protein tyrosine kinases such as the Src family. We previously reported that reduction of Src by induction of antisense src RNA expression suppressed EPO-promoted erythroid differentiation in K562 cells. In the present study, we explored the function of Src downstream of the EPOR-initiated signaling. Reduction of Src diminished tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT5 in K562 cells regardless of EPO treatment. The tyrosine phosphorylation level of STAT5 induced by EPO in F-36P cells was reduced in the presence of PP1 or PP2 selective Src inhibitor. In addition, the expression of dominant negative Src in F-36P cells reduced the tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT5. When Src and STAT5 were co-expressed in COS7 cells, tyrosine phosphorylation of STAT5 was observed, and tyrosine residue 694 (Tyr 694) of STAT5A was identified as the major phosphorylation site by Src. In vitro kinase assay revealed that GST-STAT5 fusion protein with the conserved C-terminal, but not the C-terminal-truncated mutant which lacks Tyr 694, was tyrosine-phosphorylated by Src. Src can thus directly tyrosine-phosphorylate the activation site of STAT5 (Tyr 694 in STAT5A), and Src may contribute to EPO-induced signal transduction via STAT5.
