Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the possible tick vectors that can transmit Theileria orientalis in eastern Hokkaido, Japan. Questing ticks collected from three different districts, Taiki, Otofuke, and Shin-Hidaka, of Hokkaido included Ixodes persulcatus, Haemaphysalis megaspinosa, Haemaphysalis douglasi, and Ixodes ovatus, while all the ticks collected from Yonaguni island of Okinawa were identified as Haemaphysalis longicornis. When the ticks were screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for T. orientalis, the parasite was commonly detected among all tick species. Genotype-specific PCR assays revealed that all tick species in Hokkaido were predominantly detected with type 2, while ticks collected from Okinawa (H. longicornis) were predominantly detected with type 1. Consistent with the genetic diversity of T. orientalis in ticks, genotyping PCR assays from cattle grazed in the same Hokkaido sampling locations identified type 2 as the most prevalent genotype. This study provides the first identification of I. persulcatus, H. megaspinosa, H. douglasi, and I. ovatus as possible tick vectors of T. orientalis, and finds that the variety of vectors apparently capable of transmitting T. orientalis is wider in Japan than expected. The authors suggest that tick control strategies should be modified in Hokkaido based on the seasonal activities of ticks identified in the present study.

Abstract
A moisturising micro-gel spray for prevention of dryness was compared with commercial products and artificial saliva in vitro and in a clinical setting in patients with cancer. Survival of cultured human gingival epithelial cells was evaluated after treatment with each product for 15 min. A dry test was performed for products giving a 50% survival rate, in which cell survival was measured after drying of cells treated with each product. The survival rates of cells treated with the micro-gel spray and artificial saliva were significantly higher than those of control cells. The micro-gel spray was then evaluated for 1 week in patients with symptoms of dry mouth caused by cancer treatment. There was significant improvement of these symptoms at night and on awakening and of subjective symptoms of decreased salivary volume (P < 0.05). Mean visual analogue scale scores also significantly decreased (P < 0.01). These data suggest that evaluation of moisturising products for dryness prevention can be performed in cultured cells, since products that performed well in vitro also showed good efficacy for symptoms of dry mouth. The micro-gel spray was particularly effective for relieving symptoms of dry mouth in patients with cancer.

Abstract
A 39-year-old man underwent emergency surgery for type A acute aortic dissection complicated by paraplegia. However, hemolytic anemia increased significantly due to severe stenosis of the proximal anastomosis one month after surgery. He finally underwent a redo procedure 4 months after the initial operation whereupon it was verified that half of the inner felt strip used for proximal stump fixation had turned up and was protruding into the inner lumen. We report here on a rare case of survival of postoperative early hemolytic anemia due to severe graft stenosis caused by an inverted inner Teflon felt strip without any extra vascular compression.

Abstract
Among the elderly, the quality of higher brain function is a contributing factor in performing activities of daily living. The aim of the study is to elucidate, epidemiologically, associations between mastication and higher brain function. A total of 208 community-dwelling elderly persons, aged 70-74 years, were enrolled. Self-assessed masticatory ability (masticatory ability) was classified into one of three categories: ability to chew all kinds of food, ability to chew only slightly hard food, or ability to chew only soft or pureed food. Brain function was assessed by four neuropsychological tests: Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices (RCPM) test, the Verbal Paired Associates 1 (VerPA) task and the Visual Paired Associates 1 task (from the Wechsler Memory Scale Revised Edition), and the Block Design subtest (from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales-Third Edition). Correlations between masticatory ability and each test were examined using Spearman rank correlation coefficients. Multinominal logistic regression models were conducted with the neuropsychological tests as the dependent variables and masticatory ability as the principal independent variable to adjust for age, gender, educational background, social activity, drinking/smoking habits, chronic medical conditions and dental status. Significant correlations were found between the RCPM test, the VerPA task, the Block Design test and masticatory ability. In multinominal logistic regression models, poor masticatory ability was significantly and independently related to the categories under the mean-s.d. points compared with those of the mean ± s.d. ranges for RCPM test and the VerPA task. Significant associations may exist between mastication and higher brain function among the elderly.

Abstract
Theileria orientalis is one of the benign species of Theileria that is widely distributed in Japan and is sometimes responsible for serious economic losses in the livestock industry. In the present study, we surveyed the current status of T. orientalis infection in grazing cattle in the eastern areas of Hokkaido (Taiki, Otofuke, Shintoku, and Shin-Hidaka districts) using molecular methods, as well as traditional methods, of diagnosis. The genes encoding the major piroplasm surface protein (MPSP) and p23 of T. orientalis were identified using highly detectable polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results of the MPSP-PCR assay indicated that grazing cattle in these districts, after about 1.5 months pasturage, showed high rates of infection, ranging from 10.0-64.8%. Although the main MPSP and p23 genotypes detected were the Ikeda- or Chitose-types, an MPSP gene closely relating to that found in Okinawa prefecture, and a p23 gene closely relating to the Australian (Warwick) Buffeli-type gene, were found in the cattle in Shintoku and Shin-Hidaka districts. The present survey indicated that there were at least five types of T. orientalis classified by their MPSP genes in Hokkaido, Japan, and that T. orientalis infection rates are still high in this region.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Infective endocarditis (IE) is caused by a microbial infection of the endothelial surface of the heart. Although blood culture examinations are commonly used to determine the associated bacterial species, molecular techniques, which enable rapid identification of targeted bacterial species, have recently been applied in clinical cases. METHODS Nine heart valve specimens from IE patients (six subacute cases and three acute cases) were extirpated and collected, then bacterial DNA was extracted. Bacterial species in the specimens were determined by two different molecular methods and the results were compared with those from a conventional blood culture technique. In addition, a comparison between the two molecular methods was carried out using known numbers of six streptococcal species. RESULTS The conventional blood culture method revealed the bacterial species in eight cases, while one was found to be negative. Multiple species were identified in most of the cases by both molecular methods; however, those specified by one method were not always consistent with those specified by the other. Furthermore, the species determined by the blood culture technique were not always identified by the molecular methods. We also found that the two molecular methods used in the present study were extremely sensitive to detect from 1 to 100 cells of individual oral streptococcal species. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that species specified by molecular methods may have disseminated incidentally into the bloodstream, so interpretation of such results should be carefully undertaken in clinical situations.

Abstract
A 49-year-old female suffered from increasing dyspnea from 2004. She had undergone mitral valve replacement with Carpentier-Edwards 1st-generation standard porcine bioprosthesis due to mitral stenosis 22-years ago. The echocardiography and catheterization showed mitral stenosis and, regurgitation. Re-replacement of the mitral prosthetic valve with ATS (27 mm) valve and tricuspid annuloplasty with Edwards MC3 Ring were successfully performed. There was no case who underwent so long post operative period after initial implantation of fragile prosthetic valve.

Abstract
Anaplasma bovis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection were examined by species-specific nested polymerase chain reaction in cattle in a pastureland where sika deer appear in Hokkaido, Japan. Of the 78 cattle examined, 12 (15%) and 1 (1%) tested positive for infection by A. bovis and A. phagocytophilum, respectively. One cattle tested positive for both. A. phagocytophilum infection rates were significantly lower in cattle than in sika deer (46%), but the infection rate by A. bovis was not significantly different between cattle (15%) and sika deer (23%). The strain of A. phagocytophilum detected in this study may possess significantly lower virulence or infectivity in cattle hosts. No clinical symptoms were recorded in the positive cattle, and morulae were not detected in the blood smears.

Abstract
A case of large ameloblastoma of the mandible with severe hypoproteinemia is reported. The patient, a 53-year-old man, had a large swelling (14 x 11 x 10 cm) from the right cheek to the submandible causing severe hypoproteinemia. The tumor was removed when the serum protein level had recovered to 5.3g/dl following administration of 50 ml of 20% albumin for 4 days. After the operation, his hypoproteinemia, which was thought to be caused by leakage of plasma through the oral fistula of the ameloblastoma, rapidly improved. This article describes preoperative and postoperative findings and the clinical course of the patient.

Abstract
In 1984, the patient, a 68-year-old male, underwent pacemaker implantation for the treatment of sick sinus syndrome. Because of a postoperative pocket infection, the atrial lead was removed ; but it was difficult to extract the ventricular lead, which was therefore left in place. While under observation, transient facial edema, atrial fibrillation, chest discomfort were noted. Chest X-ray revealed that the ventricular lead had gradually moved to the side of the pulmonary artery. Pre-operative phlebography of the internal jugular vein led to a diagnosis of obstruction of the superior vena cava (SVC). Maze procedure was performed and the lead was readily removed through the right atriotomy. The obstruction was incised and the lesion reconstructed by using a patch by the autologous pericardium. The satisfactory return of circulation was confirmed by postoperative imaging. At the discharge, an electrocardiograph indicated a sinus rhythm and a heart rate was 82 ppm. The facial edema and thoracic symptoms had been completely eliminated.

Abstract
Highly regioselective and efficient borylation of a variety of porphyrins has been achieved by reaction with bis(pinacolato)diboron through C-H bond activation under iridium catalysis on the basis of the synthetic protocol developed by Miyaura, Hartwig, and Smith. A boryl group can be selectively introduced at sterically uncongested positions in the peripheral aryl groups of porphyrin substrates whose peripheral beta-positions are sterically hindered. Curiously, beta substituents adjacent to the aryl group to be borylated have unexpectedly large effects on the regioselectivity, because the iridium catalyst can discriminate between subtle steric differences. Chemoselective borylation was also achieved for several functionalized porphyrins. This borylation protocol can be applied to various monomeric and oligomeric functional porphyrins, hence offering an efficient route to elaborate multiporphyrin-based molecular constructs.

Abstract
Millennia-long selective pressure of single-strand RNA viruses on the bovine Mx locus has increased the advantages of using the bovine Mx protein to evaluate the ultimate significance of the antiviral role of Mx proteins. The conclusions of research based only on the bovine Mx1 protein showed the need for comprehensive studies that demonstrate the role of all isoforms, individually or together, especially in the presence of a second isoform, the bovine Mx2 gene. This study provides information about bovine and water buffalo Mx2 genes, as well as their allelic polymorphism and basic antiviral potential. Observation of an Mx2 cDNA sequence (2,381 bp) obtained from 15 animals from 11 breeds using primers based on a previous sequence (NCBI accession no. AF335147) revealed several nucleotide substitutions, with eight different alleles and two amino acid exchanges: Gly to Ser at position 302 and Ile to Val at position 354, though the latter was found only in the NCBI database. A water buffalo Mx2 cDNA sequence was identified for the first time, revealing 46 nucleotide substitutions with 12 amino acid variations, in addition to a 9-bp insertion in the 5' untranslated region UTR, compared with the bovine Mx2 cDNA. Transfected 3T3 cells expressing bovine Mx2 mRNAs coding Gly or Ser at position 302, water buffalo Mx2 mRNA, positive control bovine Mx1 mRNA-expressing cells, and negative control parental 3T3 were subjected to infection with recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (VSVDeltaG*-G), as were empty pCI-neo vector-transfected cells. The positive control and all cells expressing Mx2 mRNAs displayed significantly higher levels of antiviral activity against VSVDeltaG*-G (P < 0.01) than did the negative controls.

Abstract
An association between seborrhoeic keratosis (SK) and malignant tumours is considered to be rare. We observed a case of eccrine porocarcinoma and Bowen's disease (BD) occurring synchronously, forming one lesion in a SK on the abdomen. It is controversial whether malignant neoplasms arising in SK occur only by chance or if pre-existing SK plays a role in pathogenesis. This case suggests an implication of pre-existing SK in the subsequent development of both BD and eccrine porocarcinoma.

Abstract
Cetaceans are well adapted to their hyperosmotic environment by properly developed osmoregulatory ability. A question here is how they regulate water and mineral balances in marine habitats. In the present study, we determined blood and urine levels of various chemicals involved in osmoregulation, compared them with those in artiodactyls, and characterized the values in the whales. Blood and urine samples obtained from baleen whales of common minke (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), sei (B. borealis), and Bryde's whales (B. brydei), and toothed whales of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) were analyzed for osmolality, major electrolytes, urea, steroid hormones and glucose. The urine osmolality and Na(+) concentrations in the cetaceans were much higher than those in the cattle. Furthermore, the cetaceans had 5 to 11-fold urea in plasma than the cattle, and 2 to 4-fold urea in urine. There were no significant difference in the plasma concentrations of corticosteroids between the cetaceans and the cattle. The present results indicate that the osmoregulatory parameters seem to be not affected by the reproductive stage and sex steroid hormones. The concentrations of urea in plasma and urine of the baleen whales were higher than those of the sperm whales, indicating a possibility that their osmoregulatory mechanisms may be correlated to their feeding habits. The present results suggest that cetaceans have unique osmoregulatory mechanisms by which they excrete strongly hypertonic urine to maintain fluid homeostasis in marine habitats.

Abstract
AIMS To detect quantitatively the total bacteria and Streptococcus mutans in dental plaque by real-time PCR with prbac, Sm and GTF-B primers, and to compare their presence with the prevalence of dental caries in Japanese preschool children. METHODS AND RESULTS Human dental plaque samples were collected from the labial surfaces of the upper primary central incisors of 107 children. The dental status was recorded as dft by WHO caries diagnostic criteria. Positive dt and dft scores by the Sm or GTF-B primer were significantly higher than negative scores (P < 0.01). The proportions of Strep. mutans to the total bacteria from sound, and sound and/or filled upper primary incisors were significantly lower than those from decayed or filled, and decayed incisors, respectively (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The ratios of Strep. mutans to total bacteria in plaque detected by real-time PCR with Sm and GTF-B primers were closely associated with the prevalence of dental caries in Japanese preschool children. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY These assays may be useful for the assessment of an individual's risk of dental caries.

Abstract
A point mutation of the gene encoding ZAP-70, a key signal transduction molecule in T cells, results in spontaneous development of T cell-mediated autoimmune arthritis in mice homozygous for the mutation. The genetic anomaly alters differentiation and selection of T cells in the thymus, leading to thymic production of arthritogenic autoimmune T cells. The arthritogenic T cells persist in the periphery and elicit arthritis when activated by microbial agents that stimulate innate immunity. This model is instrumental in understanding how genetic variations in T cell signal transduction, together with environmental influences, contribute to the development of autoimmune disease.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] The utility of expanded porphyrins as a dipolarophile in cycloaddition reactions has been investigated. The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of meso-octakis(pentafluorophenyl)[36]octaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1) with an azomethine ylide provides mono- and bis-pyrrolidine-fused octaphyrins regio- and stereoselectively. Treatment of the cycloadduct with MnO(2) afforded [34]octaphyrin quantitatively.
