Abstract
beta-Xylosidase was extracted from Aureobasidium sp. ATCC 20524 and purified to homogeneity. The molecular mass was estimated at 411 kDa. The enzyme contained 15.3% (w/w) carbohydrate. The optimum pH and temperature were pH 3.5 and 80 degrees C, respectively. The enzyme was stable at pH 3.5-9 after 3 h and at 80 degrees C after 15 min. The Michaelis constant (K(m)) and maximum velocity (V(max)) toward p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-xyloside were 2.0 mmol l(-1) and 0.94 mmol min(-1) mg(-1) protein, respectively. The enzyme was inhibited strongly by mercury, lead, and copper ions.

Abstract
A mannose isomerase from Agrobacterium radiobacter M-1 (formerly Pseudomonas sp. MI) was purified to electrophoretic homogeneity and characterized. A cell-free extract was separated by ammonium sulfate fractionation, Butyl-Toyopearl 650M, DEAE-Sepharose and hydroxylapatite column chromatography. Its molecular mass was estimated to be 44 kDa by SDS-PAGE and 90 kDa by gel filtration, in which the enzyme is most likely a dimer composed of two identical subunits. The purified enzyme had an optimum pH at 8.0, an optimum temperature at 60 degrees C, a pI of 5.2 and a Km of 20 mM, and specifically converted D-mannose and D-lyxose to ketose. The N-terminal amino acid sequence was identified.

Abstract
Through a year from April, 1999 to March, 2000, 20 samples, which consisted of raw sewage (2), chlorine-treated sewage (2), seawater (10) and naturally grown oysters (6), were collected monthly both from the sewage works at Mihama-ku, Chiba City and at a yacht harbor in Chiba City Bay, Japan. Astrovirus RNA were detected by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and was typed by direct sequencing. Astrovirus positive products were detected from 9 samples (raw sewage; 1/2, chlorine-treated sewage; 2/2, seawater; 5/10 and oysters; 1/6) collected in April, 1999. In May, positive products were detected from 4 samples (raw sewage; 2/2 and seawater; 2/10). In June, only 1 positive product was detected from raw sewage. The number of positive samples showed a tendency to decrease and no positive products were detected from samples collected in July, 1999 to January, 2000. After that period, positive products were again detected from 3 samples (raw sewage; 1/2, chlorine-treated sewage; 2/2) collected in February, 2000. In March, the number of positive samples showed the peak and positive products were detected from 12 samples (raw sewage; 2/2, chlorine-treated sewage; 2/2, seawater; 7/10 and oysters: 1/6). Astrovirus positive products detected in April, May, June, July, 1999 and February, 2000 were classified into type 1 or 2 by sequencing, whereas in March, 2000 were type 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7.

Abstract
Complement (C) 4d and cofactor C4b binding protein (C4bp) are detected in the glomerular capillary walls of a patient with preeclampsia. A 32-year-old nullipara had proteinuria of 1.2 g/d and edema at the 33rd week of pregnancy. Gradually the urinary protein excretion increased, reaching 5.1 g/d at the 37th week. The patient also showed hypertension at this stage. After normal mature delivery, the level of the urinary protein excretion remained at 3 to 4 g/d. Renal biopsy performed by means of light and electron microscopy, 15 days after delivery, showed almost normal glomeruli and modest subendothelial widening. Immunohistochemistry indicated that immunoglobulin (Ig) A, IgG, C1q, C3c, and C4c were not deposited in the glomeruli, whereas weakly positive IgM and fibrin-related antigen (FRA) were observed. Conversely, C4d, C3d, and C4bp were strongly deposited. Protein S (PS) also was observed, with a similar distribution pattern to that of C4bp. Immunoelectron microscopy showed the deposition of C4d along the capillary walls and of C4bp in the subendothelium. These findings suggest that the C4 activation process as well as the regulation process of C system and of the inflammatory coagulation axis by C4bp and PS may play an important role in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia, so-called glomerular capillary endotheliosis (GCE).

Abstract
In this article, we evaluated the feasibility of the restricted replication-competent adenoviruses for treatment of anaplastic thyroid carcinomas (ATCs), which are very aggressive and difficult to treat. Because ATCs very often harbor p53 mutations, we used wt-p53 as a regulatory factor to restrict virus replication and cytopathic effect to p53-mutated cells. The recently reported "gene inactivation strategy" using p53-regulated Cre/loxP system was employed; this system consists of two recombinant adenoviruses. One has an expression unit of the synthetic p53 - responsive promoter and the Cre recombinase gene (Axyp53RECre), and another contains two expression units; the first consists of E1A gene flanked by a pair of loxP sites downstream of the constitutive CAG promoter and the second E1B19K gene under the control of the CMV promoter (AdCALE1AL). We expected that coinfection of these two adenoviruses into the cells with wt-p53 would lead to expression of the Cre, which excises E1A gene and switches off E1A expression resulting in no virus replication, whereas in the cells with mutant p53 E1A could be expressed that leads to virus replication and cell lysis. Our in vitro data demonstrate that although infection of AdCALE1AL alone led to E1A expression, viral replication and cytolysis in all the thyroid cells examined irrespective of their p53 status, the double infection did so in FRO cells (p53-null ATC) but not in FRO cells stably expressing wt-p53 and normal thyroid cells with wt-p53. These data indicate that our double infection method may have a potential for treatment of ATC and probably also other p53-defective cancer cells.

Abstract
The effects of central administration of the opioid-like peptide nociceptin (also known as orphanin FQ) were investigated on the secretion of arginine vasopressin (AVP) in response to dehydration and hyperosmolar or hypovolemic stimulation in conscious rats. Intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of nociceptin suppressed plasma AVP concentration in a dose-dependent manner (0.1-10 microg/rat) in dehydrated rats, and the maximum effect was obtained 10 min after the administration (dehydration with 10 microg/rat nociceptin, 3.11 +/- 0.27 pg/ml vs. control, 10.32 +/- 0.96 pg/ml). The plasma AVP increase in response to either hyperosmolality [i.p. injection of hypertonic saline (HS) (600 mosml/kg)] or hypovolemia [i.p. injection of polyethylene glycol (PEG)] was also significantly blunted when nociceptin was injected i.c.v. (HS with 10 microg/rat nociceptin, 1.16 +/- 0.09 pg/ml vs. control, 1.82 +/- 0.30 pg/ml; PEG with 10 microg/rat nociceptin, 0.91 +/- 0.16 pg/ml vs. control, 2.41 +/- 0.26 pg/ml). Pretreatment with a selective opioid kappa-receptor antagonist, nor-binaltorphimine (1 microg/ rat, i.c.v.) or naloxone (2.5 mg/rat, s.c. injection) did not reverse the inhibitory effects of nociceptin on AVP release. Moreover, when plasma AVP was suppressed by acute water loading, immunoneutralization of endogenous nociceptin by antinociceptin-antiserum i.c.v. significantly reversed the suppression (0.57 +/- 0.12 pg/ml vs. control, 0.25 +/- 0.04 pg/ml). These results suggest that central nociceptin is physiologically involved in the control of AVP release through an inhibitory action.

Abstract
We present the experimental study of an optical isolator with a semiconductor guiding layer that was obtained by use of a nonreciprocal phase shift. The isolator is equipped with an optical interferometer composed of tapered couplers, nonreciprocal phase shifters, and a reciprocal phase shifter. The nonreciprocal phase shifter was constructed by wafer direct bonding between the semiconductor guiding layer and the magneto-optic cladding layer. The isolator, designed for the 1.55-mum wavelength, was fabricated to investigate the characteristics of each component. By applying an external magnetic field to the nonreciprocal phase shifter, we achieved an isolation ratio of approximately 4.9 dB in the interferometric isolator.

Abstract
The present study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of adenovirus-mediated wild-type (wt) tumor suppressor p53 expression in four human thyroid carcinoma cell lines harboring p53 mutations (ARO, FRO, NPA, and WRO) and normal human thyroid follicular cells with wt-p53 in vitro and in vivo. In vitro infection of replication-deficient recombinant adenovirus vector expressing wt-p53 led to a dose-dependent cell killing in both normal and carcinoma cells. In contrast, adenovirus expressing Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase showed little effect. The sensitivity to p53-mediated cell killing varied among the cells used. It was, at least partly, dependent on their adenovirus infectivity in carcinoma cells, whereas normal thyroid cells were relatively resistant to p53-mediated cell death despite its highest adenovirus infectivity. The mechanism of cell killing by wt-p53 was shown, by flow cytometric analysis, to be apoptosis. Furthermore, wt-p53 expression renders two out of four carcinoma cell lines (FRO and NPA) more sensitive to doxorubicin and one (FRO) to 5-fluorouracil, independent of treatment schedule. In vivo experiments, using FRO and NPA cells, showed that growth of sc tumors in nude mice was nearly completely inhibited by direct injection of adenovirus expressing wt-p53 [1 x 10(9) plaque-forming units/tumor]. This effect was augmented by its combination with doxorubicin treatment (4 mg/kg, thrice a week), which led to tumor regression. Our results therefore indicate that adenovirus-mediated wt-p53 gene introduction seems to be a potential clinical utility in gene therapy for anaplastic thyroid carcinomas, particularly when combined with chemotherapy.

Abstract
From September 1976 to February 1998, we experienced 75 resected patients with hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Curative resection was performed in 45 patients (60.0%), with a cumulative 5-year survival rate of 39.8%. In this retrospective study, we compared therapeutic outcomes in these 75 patients according to the period during which they were treated; (1) 12 patients in the early period (September 1976 to August 1981) chiefly treated by bile duct resection, (2) 50 patients in the middle period, September 1981 to August 1994, chiefly treated by aggressive surgical procedures with extensive hepatectomy plus caudate lobe resection, and (3) 13 patients in the late period, September 1994 to February 1998, during which percutaneous transhepatic portal embolization was introduced to increase the safety and curability of extended hepatectomy, and limited hepatectomy was selected according to tumor spread. In the late period, total resection of the caudate lobe was done in all patients, with the aim being thorough resection of cancer cells in the caudate lobe. The curative resection rates were 16.7% in the early period, 64.0% in the middle period, and 84.6% in the late period, showing an improvement year-by-year (P<0.05; early period vs middle period and late period). All patients in the early period died within 2 years of resection, whereas the 5-year survival rate in the middle period was 24.4%, significantly improved (P<0.05) compared with the early period. The 1- and 3-year survival rates of 84.6% and 58.0%, respectively, in the late period, show an even greater improvement in outcome.

Abstract
We investigated the baroregulation of arginine vasopressin (AVP) gene transcription in the supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular nuclei (PVN) in conscious rats by use of intronic in situ hybridization. Hemorrhage of 16 ml/kg body wt decreased mean arterial pressure (MAP) by 57% and increased both plasma AVP (control, 1.2 +/- 0.3 pg/ml; 16 ml/kg body wt, 38.9 +/- 3.2 pg/ml) at 10 min and AVP heteronuclear (hn)RNA levels (SON, 150%; PVN, 140% of control values) at 20 min. On the other hand, hemorrhage of 7 ml/kg body wt had no significant effect on MAP, plasma AVP, or the AVP hnRNA levels. To better understand the baroregulation, we also examined the effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), which induces hypotension without a change in blood volume. The subcutaneous injection of 2 mg/kg body wt SNP, which decreased the MAP by 60%, increased both plasma AVP (control, 1.6 +/- 0.4 pg/ml; 2 mg/kg body wt, 8.1 +/- 0.4 pg/ml) at 10 min and AVP hnRNA levels (SON, 150%; PVN, 140% of control values) at 30 min. The injection of 0.1 mg/kg body wt SNP, which reduced the MAP by 10%, failed to increase either the plasma AVP or AVP hnRNA levels. These results indicate that AVP gene transcription increases rapidly after both hypotensive hemorrhage and normovolemic hypotension. In addition, it is suggested that the set point for AVP synthesis in the baroregulation is similar to that for AVP release.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Japan the patients with Chinese herbs nephropathy (CHN), aristolochic acids-(AAs) associated renal failure, often present Fanconi syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the pattern of aminoaciduria in patients with AAs-induced Fanconi syndrome and to clarify whether it is different from other Fanconi syndromes reported in the literature. SUBJECTS AND METHODS The subjects consisted of 4 patients with Fanconi syndrome due to AAs. We studied biochemical data and urinary excretion of amino acids in the 4 patients. Amino acids in their urine were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). RESULTS Three out of 4 patients showed in common very increased excretion ofproline, hydroxyproline and citruline. Last patient showed the very increased levels of proline and valine. Regarding glycine, which is considered to belong to the same group as imino acid and to be shared with high-affinity transport system ofproline, there was not very increased excretion. CONCLUSION These findings suggest that AAs would predominantly affect the low-affinity transport system of proline in the brushborder membrane of proximal tubules because the low-affinity system is considered not to be shared with glycine transport.

Abstract
To address the issue of whether probucol reduces clinical events after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), we surveyed clinical status at 1 year after PTCA of 101 patients who had entered the Probucol Restenosis Angioplasty Trial. Repeat angioplasty at index lesions were required in 5 patients in the probucol group and in 12 in the control group, suggesting that probucol administered beginning 4 weeks before PTCA reduces repeat revascularization rates for 1 year.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Since July 1994, we have been conducting a prospective study of a protocol for selection of treatment of acute pancreatitis based on scoring of severity. METHODS From July 1994 to June 1998, 56 patients with acute pancreatitis were enrolled in this study. The protocol employed was based on the results of our retrospective study. On admission, the prognosis score (scoring of severity of acute pancreatitis based on the criteria of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan) and APACHE II score were calculated, and early treatment was selected according to the protocol. RESULTS All of the 26 patients with gallstone pancreatitis and 28 of 30 patients with non-gallstone pancreatitis were successfully treated and had good outcome. There were 2 deaths in non-gallstone pancreatitis. In selection of early treatment according to the scoring of severity, we suggested that when the prognosis score is 2 or more and the APACHE II score of 8 or more, gallstone pancreatitis should be treated by biliary drainage, and non-gallstone pancreatitis by peritoneal lavage. When infected pancreatic necrosis is exhibited, surgery is indicated. CONCLUSION Our new management protocol for acute pancreatitis based on the prognosis score and APACHE II score appear to be useful for accurately scoring severity and selecting the treatment methods.

Abstract
Since 1980 extended surgery has been used to treat pancreatic cancer in many institutions in Japan in the hope of achieving curative resection and a good outcome. The resection rate increased, but the final outcome was unsatisfactory, and the question of postoperative quality of life (QOL) following extended surgery has instead become the central issue. During the past 22 years (October 1976 to June 1998) 169 of the 188 patients with invasive pancreatic ductal carcinoma at Mie University Hospital were treated surgically. A standard operation was performed in the early period (October 1976 to April 1981, n = 34), an extended operation was performed in the middle period (May 1981 to March 1993, n = 100), and a modified standard operation was performed in the late period (April 1993 to June 1998, n = 35). 'Standard operation' means pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) with D1 lymph node dissection (regional), and 'extended operation' means PD with D2-D3 lymph node dissection. Our 'modified standard operation' consists of PD with lymph node dissection limited to the anterior pancreaticoduodenal (APD), posterior pancreaticoduodenal (PPD), pyloric (PY), hepatoduodenal ligament (HDL), common hepatic artery (CH) and right half of the superior mesenteric (SM) nodes. Thus, the extent of lymph node dissection in the modified standard procedure lies between the level in the standard and extended procedure, but the PD is the same, with only slight modification in the reconstruction procedure. We consider the standard operation to be a less curative procedure and the extended operation to be a very stressful procedure and accordingly we have modified it (modified standard operation) in our recent cases out of consideration for patients' QOL. We found that postoperative QOL and survival were much better in the late period than in the early and middle periods.

Abstract
IS-741, a new synthetic anti-inflammatory agent, is known to have some inhibitory effect on cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2), an enzyme which hydrolyzes cellular phospholipids, liberating fatty acids and lysophospholipids and providing the precursor substrates for the biosynthesis of eicosanoids and platelet-activating factor. cPLA2 is therefore an attractive target for the development of novel therapies. During infusion of lactated Ringer's solution at a rate of 10 ml/kg/h, acute pancreatitis was induced in dogs by injecting autologous gallbladder bile into the main pancreatic duct. The dogs were then divided into two groups: group A (nontreatment), no treatment during the experiment, and group B (IS-741), intravenously injected with IS-741 at 6 and 30 h after induction of acute pancreatitis. As a result, the survival rate was significantly higher in group B than in group A. Mean arterial pressure and PaO2 were well maintained in group B as compared with group A. The NAG index, which is known to be markedly increased in renal tubular damage, was significantly lower in group B than in group A. Histological examination of the pancreas, lung, and kidney in group B showed milder changes than in group A. cPLA2 activity in the pancreas, lung and renal cortex was much lower in group B than in group A, but sPLA2 activity in these tissues did not differ significantly between the two groups. In conclusion, IS-741 exerts a potentially therapeutic effect on experimental acute pancreatitis by mitigating the degree of damage in the pancreas, lung, and kidney. The inhibitory effect of IS-741 on cPLA2 may contribute to one of the antiinflammatory mechanisms of actions of this agent.

Abstract
Elevated levels of serum lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] are reported to be associated with risk of atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Little is known about the influence of Lp(a) on the progression of coronary artery disease. We evaluated the association of serum Lp(a) and the long-term changes of angiographic severity in patients who underwent repeated coronary angiography at intervals of more than 2 years. We evaluated 70 patients, and divided them into 3 groups by angiographic findings. Median Lp(a) concentration was significantly higher in the progression group (N=36) than in the no-change group (N=23) or the regression group (N=11) (32.4 vs 22, 19.3 mg/dl, p<0.05). Furthermore, the progression group had more patients whose Lp(a) levels were greater than 30 mg/dl (p=0.006), while in the regression group all patients were under 30 mg/dl. Stepwise logistic regression analysis for progression of lesions showed that Lp(a) > or =30 mg/dl remained significant, giving an estimated odds ratio (OR) of 2.46 (p= 0.005). In the subgroup analysis, OR in patients with mild lesions was reduced to 2.05 (p<0.05) while in patients with severe lesions OR was increased to 3.39 (p=0.003). The serum Lp(a) level has a close correlation with angiographic progression, and may be an important predictor for progression.

Abstract
A rare case of malignant melanoma of the base of the tongue in a 65-year-old Japanese woman is described. The primary and metastatic tumors were treated by surgery, chemohormone and immunotherapy. There was no recurrence for 5 years after the initial diagnosis. Electron microscopy suggested that the melanosomes of the melanoma cells in the cervical lymph nodes were less mature than those in the primary melanoma cells; melanosome immaturity was consistent with a more aggressive quality.

Abstract
In order to identify predictors of late restenosis after GFX stent implantation, procedural and 6-month clinical and angiographic follow-up data of prospectively entered 141 consecutive lesions treated with a single long (24 or 30 mm) GFX stent were compared to 66 consecutive lesions requiring a single short (12 or 18 mm) stent. The initial clinical success rate of 97% and thrombosis rate of 1.4% with long stents were similar to 97% and 0% with short stents (P = NS). Their respective binary restenosis rates were 34.7% and 23.3% for long and short stents as a whole (P = NS), but being 10.0% for 12 mm, 26.0% for 18 mm, 31.3% for 24 mm, and 39.2% for 30 mm. When proximal and distal reference diameters at baseline were compared between the lesions with and without restenosis, proximal reference diameters were not statistically different (3.02+/-0.42 mm vs. 3.18+/-0.62 mm) and the restenosis group had significantly smaller distal reference diameters (2.15+/-0.48 mm vs. 2.55+/-0.53 mm, P<0.0001). The treatment of long lesions with single long-stent implantation can be accomplished with high success and low complication rates. Single long-stent implantation may be effective, if the distal reference size of the long narrowing is big enough to accept the stent.

Abstract
Combined standing and propagating wave modes have previously been successfully used by the authors for simultaneous agglomeration and transportation of small particles suspended in still water. The present study of this method with flowing water, using a 120 x 350 x 13 mm3 agglomerator, confirmed that the proposed method is applicable with suspended SiO2 particles of varying size. The process was found to be most efficient at flow rates below a certain threshold, which varies with particle size. This threshold was found to be 5 ml/s for a particle size of 7.9 microns at an ultrasonic frequency of 2 MHz corresponding to 0.74 mm wavelength. The existence of a maximum particle transport velocity was demonstrated.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to report the long-term follow-up outcome of patients undergoing percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy (PTMC). The follow-up of 68 of 82 (83%) consecutive patients undergoing successful PTMC (mitral valve area of more than 1.5 cm(2) without major complications) in 1987 using the Inoue balloon was analyzed. The mean age at the time of PTMC was 52 +/- 11 years and 81% were female patients. The mean follow-up interval was 98 +/- 37 months (6 to 123). Actuarial survival rate was 98%, 97%, and 86% at 1, 5, and 10 years, respectively; the event-free (death, mitral valve replacement, and repeat PTMC) survival rate was 90%, 85%, and 66% at 1, 5, and 10 years, respectively. According to the echocardiographic findings, patients could be divided into three groups: pliable valve, semipliable valve, and rigid valve. Multivariable analysis identified echocardiographic subgrouping as the major significant predictor of any event: the event-free survival rate being 70% in group 1, 66% in group 2, and 20% in group 3 (P < 0.05). Echocardiographic follow-up was available in 49 of 68 patients (72%); the mitral valve area changed from 1.4 +/- 0.5 before to 2.1 +/- 0.4 immediately post-PTMC, and 1.8 +/- 0.4 cm(2) 10 years after the procedure. The long-term follow-up outcome following successful PTMC was favorable and seems to support it as a viable alternative to surgical commissurotomy in selected patients. Patients with rigid valves should be selected very carefully.

Abstract
Polydipsic mice, STR/N, which show extreme polydipsia and polyuria, were discovered in 1958. In the STR/N, urine outputs are much higher than in control mice. The possibility of an abnormal regulation of the arginine vasopressin (AVP) system, or an abnormality in the renal susceptibility to AVP, should be considered. In this study we investigated the AVP system and water regulation in STR/N. We sequenced the AVP and the AVP V(2)-receptor genes of the STR/N by direct sequencing. No mutation was found in either of them. AVP gene expression examined by in situ hybridization and plasma sodium in 8-wk-old STR/N was significantly lower than in control mice, whereas it was significantly higher at 20 wk. Renal sensitivity to injected AVP was attenuated in 20-wk-old STR/N. The suppression of AVP synthesis due to excessive water retention in 8-wk-old STR/N suggests that polydipsia may be the primary cause in this strain. The 20-wk-old STR/N became dehydrated with the acceleration of AVP synthesis, which might have resulted from secondary desensitization to AVP.

Abstract
The experimental study of an optical isolator by use of a nonreciprocal phase shift is demonstrated. The isolator has an optical interferometer composed of tapered couplers, nonreciprocal phase shifters, and a reciprocal phase shifter. The isolator, designed for a 1.55-microm wavelength, was fabricated to investigate the characteristics of each component. The branching and coupling characteristics of the tapered coupler were measured. The nonreciprocal and reciprocal phase shifts were also evaluated. By applying an external magnetic field to the interferometer, we confirmed the nonreciprocal phase shift in the interferometric isolator.

Abstract
Prostaglandin (PG) F synthase forms PGF(2alpha) and 9alpha, 11beta-PGF2 from PGH2 and PGD2, respectively. PGH2 is synthesized from arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenase (COX) and then metabolized to various PGs and thromboxane by specific enzymes. PGD2 is synthesized from PGH2 by PGD synthase. To identify PGF2-producing cells in the rat liver, the occurrence and localization of PGF synthase and COX were studied with immunochemical and immunohistochemical techniques using anti-liver-type PGF synthase and anti-COX antibodies. In Western blot analyses, positive bands of liver-type PGF synthase and constitutive COX-1 were observed at positions approximately 37 kDa and 70-72 kDa, respectively. However, inducible COX-2 was not detected. In the immunohistochemical study, PGF synthase was present in the cytoplasm of the sinusoidal endothelial cells. COX-1 was present on the membranes of the nucleus and endoplasmic reticulum of the endothelial cells and Kupffer cells. Double immunostaining for PGF synthase and COX-1 showed that both enzymes were present in the same endothelial cells. These results suggest that the main site of PGF2 synthesis in the liver is the sinusoidal endothelial cell.
