Abstract
Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a critical event in metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Rho/ROCKs signaling has a pivotal role in orchestrating actin cytoskeleton, leading to EMT and cancer invasion. However, the underlying mechanisms for ROCKs activation are not fully understood. Here, we identified FOXM1D, a novel isoform of Forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) that has a pivotal role in ROCKs activation by directly interacting with coiled-coil region of ROCK2. FOXM1D overexpression significantly polymerizes actin assembly and impairs E-cadherin expression, resulting in EMT and metastasis in xenograft mouse model and knockdown of FOXM1D has the opposite effect. Moreover, a high FOXM1D level correlates closely with clinical CRC metastasis. FOXM1D-induced ROCKs activation could be abrogated by the ROCKs inhibitors Y-27632 and fasudil. These observations indicate that the FOXM1D-ROCK2 interaction is crucial for Rho/ROCKs signaling and provide novel insight into actin cytoskeleton regulation and therapeutic potential for CRC metastasis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study has been planned to explore the relationship between P13K/AKT signal pathway-mediated matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) gene and lung cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS The adjacent lesion tissues were removed from 68 cases of patients with lung cancer admitted to our hospital from February 2013 to February 2015. They were selected as observation group, and the pulmonary adjacent normal section specimens from 18 cases were taken as control group. The differences in expression quantities of P13K, AKT and MMP-9 genes in adjacent lesion tissues and adjacent normal tissues were detected by fluorescence quantitative PCR technology, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western-blotting technology and immunohistochemical technique and SP staining technology. RESULTS The mRNA expression quantities of P13K, AKT and MMP-9 genes in adjacent lesion tissues increased significantly in comparison to adjacent normal tissues, and the differences were statistically significant (p<0.05). The results of Spearman correlation detection showed that the expression quantity of MMP-9 in adjacent lesion tissues had a significantly positive correlation with that of P13K and AKT (r=0.232, p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS MMP-9 gene could promote the generation of lung cancer through P13K/AKT signal pathway, which provides certain theoretical and experimental basis for subsequent diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.

Abstract
The commonly used Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine only induces moderate T cell responses and is less effective in protecting against pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in adults and ageing populations. Thus, developing new TB vaccine candidates is an important strategy against the spread of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Here, we demonstrated that immunization with heat-shock protein gp96 as an adjuvant led to a significantly increased CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell response to a BCG vaccine. Secretion of the Th1-type cytokines was increased by splenocytes from gp96-immunized mice. In addition, adding gp96 as an adjuvant effectively improved the protection against intravenous challenge with Mycobacterium bovis BCG in mice. Our study reveals the novel property of gp96 in boosting the vaccine-specific T cell response and its potential use as an adjuvant for BCG vaccines against mycobacterial infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thiopurine-induced leukopenia is the most common dangerous adverse event in Asians. NUDT15 R139C was recently proposed to be a promising biomarker for leukopenia with thiopurine therapy in Asians, but this has not been replicated in the Chinese population. AIM To investigate the influence of NUDT15 R139C, thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT), 6-TGN and 6-MMPR on thiopurine-induced leukopenia in Chinese patients with Crohn's disease. METHODS Clinical and epidemiological characteristics were reviewed from medical records. NUDT15 R139C and TPMT were genotyped. 6-TGN/6-MMPR concentrations were measured with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). RESULTS A total of 253 patients were included, 65 (25.7%) of whom experienced leukopenia. The median follow-up with thiopurine treatment was 38.0 weeks (range, 1-192 weeks). NUDT15 R139C was strongly associated with the incidence of leukopenia (70.2% mutation vs. 12.8% wild type; P=8.61×10-19 ; odds ratio, 10.80; 95% CI, 5.89-19.83). However, TPMT genotype was not found to be correlated with the incidence of leukopenia (P = 0.44). In subgroup of NUDT15 wild type, there was significant difference of 6TGN concentration between patients with and without leukopenia (413.0 (174.2-831.4) vs. 279.7 (77.3-666.9) pmol/8 × 108 RBC, P = 0.0055). In contrast, no association was found in patients with NUDT15 R139C variant alleles (P = 0.26). 6-MMPR was not correlated with leukopenia (P = 0.84). CONCLUSIONS In Chinese patients, it is strongly recommended to detect NUDT15 genotype rather than TPMT before initiating thiopurine drugs. 6TGN concentration should be routinely monitored in CD patients with NUDT15 wild type. As for CT genotype, starting at low dose and careful monitoring for leukopenia and 6TGN levels is recommended.

Abstract
Objective: To screen sensitive indicators of renal injury in lead workers using benchmark dose method. Methods: Of the 486 subjects,116 did not occupationally contact to lead as a control. The blood lead was considered as exposure biomarker, while Uβ2-MG and UNAG as effect biomarkers for renal injury. The BMD and BMDL of blood lead were estimated at the 10% benchmark response using BMDS Version 2.6. Results: There was statistical rise in blood lead between the lead group and control group (P<0.05) ; and the blood lead level was divided into four groups by quarterback spacing method, among which UNAG was statistically different (P<0.05) . There was an increased prevalence of abnormal rates of Uβ2-MG and UNAG with increasing blood lead concentration (P<0.05) , after trend chi-square test. BMD and BMDL of UNAG and Uβ2-MG were 602.784/431.838 μg/L and 130.398/100.981 μg/L caculated by Log-Probit model, respectively. Conclusions: Occupational lead exposure may cause kidney damage, and UNAG could be as a more sensitive marker for monitoring early renal injury than Uβ2-MG.

Abstract
Soluble receptor for advanced glycation end-products (sRAGE) acts as a decoy to prevent interaction between RAGE and its pro-inflammatory ligands. sRAGE levels have been found to decrease in chronic inflammatory diseases, including hypertension. However, few data have been reported concerning the association between serum sRAGE levels and hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Fasting blood samples were obtained from 209 essential hypertensive patients, and sRAGE levels were measured using a commercially available double-sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. All patients underwent complete transthoracic echocardiographic examination. LVH was defined as a left ventricular mass index >115 g/m(2) for men and >95 g/m(2) for women. Eighty-one hypertensive patients (38.76%) were categorized in the LVH(+) group. Age (P = 0.009), hypertension duration (P = 0.013), triglyceride levels (P = 0.028), and systolic blood pressure (P = 0.026) were higher, and sRAGE and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were lower in the LVH(+) group compared with the LVH(-) group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that sRAGE level [odds ratio (OR) = 0.916; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.864-0.984; P = 0.003], hypertension duration (OR = 1.024; 95%CI = 1.003-1.052; P = 0.027), and triglyceride level (OR = 1.017; 95%CI = 1.005-1.039; P = 0.018) were independent predictors of LVH in hypertensive patients. In conclusion, serum sRAGE level was inversely associated with LVH in hypertensive patients.

Abstract
As Notch receptors have been shown to induce chemoresistance, we hypothesized that delta-like ligand-4 (DLL4), a central Notch signalling ligand, might also participate in chemoresistance in breast cancer. To investigate this issue, overexpression of DLL4 was induced by transfection with expression vectors for DLL4 in the human breast cancer cell line Michigan cancer foundation-7 (MCF-7). It was found that DLL4 could be adaptively upregulated by docetaxel (DOC) treatment in a dose-dependent manner, but Notch1 was unaffected. Overexpression of DLL4 could significantly attenuate the cytotoxic effects of DOC by increasing Bcl-2 expression, while decreasing Bax expression, apoptosis rate and DNA damage. The protective effects of DLL4 made cells acquire chemoresistance against DOC and resulted in cancer cell survival. DLL4 is normally regarded as a regulator of vascular development. Our results expanded the understanding of DLL4. Since DLL4 may play an important role in the process of acquiring chemoresistance, it may be a promising target in overcoming chemoresistance in breast cancer.

Abstract
Super-resolution imaging has been advantageous in studying biological and chemical systems, but the required equipment and platforms are expensive and unable to observe single-molecules at the high (μM) fluorophore concentrations required to study protein interaction and enzymatic activity. Here, a plasmonic platform was designed that utilized an inexpensively fabricated plasmonic grating in combination with a scalable glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique using physical vapor deposition. The GLAD creates an abundance of plasmonic nano-protrusion probes that combine the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) from the periodic gratings with the localized SPR of these nano-protrusions. The resulting platform enables simultaneous imaging of a large area without point-by-point scanning or bulk averaging for the detection of single Cyanine-5 molecules in dye concentrations ranging from 50 pM to 10 μM using epifluorescence microscopy. Combining the near-field plasmonic nano-protrusion probes and super-resolution technique using localization microscopy, we demonstrate the ability to resolve grain sizes down to 65 nm. This plasmonic GLAD grating is a cost-effective super-resolution imaging substrate with potential applications in high-speed biomedical imaging over a wide range of fluorescent concentrations.

Abstract
We report magnetic field dependent transport measurements on a single crystal of cubic YSb together with first principles calculations of its electronic structure. The transverse magnetoresistance does not saturate up to 9 T and attains a value of 75 000% at 1.8 K. The Hall coefficient is electron-like at high temperature, changes sign to hole-like between 110 and 50 K, and again becomes electron-like below 50 K. First principles calculations show that YSb is a compensated semimetal with a qualitatively similar electronic structure to that of isostructural LaSb and LaBi, but with larger Fermi surface volume. The measured electron carrier density and Hall mobility calculated at 1.8 K, based on a single band approximation, are [Formula: see text] cm(-3) and [Formula: see text] cm(2) Vs(-1), respectively. These values are comparable with those reported for LaBi and LaSb. Like LaBi and LaSb, YSb undergoes a magnetic field-induced metal-insulator-like transition below a characteristic temperature T m, with resistivity saturation below 13 K. Thickness dependent electrical resistance measurements show a deviation of the resistance behavior from that expected for a normal metal; however, they do not unambiguously establish surface conduction as the mechanism for the resistivity plateau.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the prognostic factors of postoperative incisional surgical site infections (I-SSI) for colorectal cancer. Methods: Clinical data of 2 385 colorectal cancer patients undergoing resection by the same surgical team in Department of Colon and Rectum Surgery, Fujian Medical University Union Hospital from January 2000 to February 2014 was analyzed retrospectively. There were 1 421 male and 964 female patients, with a mean age of (59±13) years. Univariate analysis and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were performed for independent prognostic factors of I-SSI. Results: The I-SSI occurred in 77 patients (3.23%). The results of univariate analysis showed that there were statistical differences in body mass index (t=-3.356), operation time (t=-3.609), length of incision (t=-5.492), radical operation (χ2=8.963), laparoscopic surgery (χ2=25.884), combined evisceration (χ2=6.349) and intraoperative blood infusion (χ2=4.176) between two groups (all P<0.05) . The results of multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that independent prognostic factors of I-SSI were identified to be body mass index (OR=1.087, 95%CI: 1.023 to 1.155, P=0.007), operation time (OR=1.007, 95%CI: 1.002 to 1.012, P=0.006), preoperative chemoradiotherapy (OR=2.434, 95%CI: 1.099 to 5.393, P=0.028) and combined evisceration (OR=2.596, 95%CI: 1.060 to 6.357, P=0.037). The independent protective prognostic factor of I-SSI was identified to be the laparoscopic surgery (OR=0.386, 95%CI: 0.170 to 0.877, P=0.023). Conclusions: Body mass index, operation time, preoperative chemoradiotherapy and combined evisceration are identified to be independent prognostic factors for I-SSI. High-risk patients should receive individualized perioperative intervention. Nevertheless, the laparoscopic surgery can decrease the incidence of I-SSI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the feasibility and outcome of liver transplantation in the treatment of liver metastatic cancer. METHODS Four patients with pathologically confirmed liver metastatic cancer underwent liver transplantation, including one of liver metastases from pancreatic endocrine tumor, one from rectal endocrine tumor, one from stomach stromal tumor and one from colorectal carcinoma. Classic surgical method was adopted, i. e. orthotopic liver transplantation for the recipients and transplants came from cadaveric donors. RESULTS All the four patients had a smooth operation, an uneventful early postoperative recovery and good living quality. The patient with liver metastases from pancreatic endocrine tumor had liver tumor recurrence at four and a half years after the transplantation, and then underwent left lateral hepatic lobectomy, without any recurrence until now. The patient with liver metastases from rectal endocrine tumor had right renal and pelvic tumor metastasis at 16 months after the operation, and died of tumor recurrence 5 years after the liver transplantation. The patient with liver metastases from gastric stromal tumor had extensive pelvic metastases at five and a half months after the transplantation, and survived with tumor for 4 years and 6 months after the operation. The patient with liver metastases from colorectal carcinoma had extensive bilateral lung metastases at 3 months after the transplantation and died one and a half years after the operation. CONCLUSION For well-differentiated unresectable metastatic liver cancers, liver transplantation may serve as a treatment option and better treatment results can be achieved for some highly selected patients.

Abstract
Founded in 1872, the Hong Kong Donghua Hospital (Tung Wah Group of Hospitals later) was the earliest traditional Chinese hospital in modern times, which has made positive contributions in exploring the shape and structure of TCM hospital and promoting science of TCM in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, TCM didn't acquire a legal status in Hong Kong, the practice of TCM in Donghua Hospital was thus restricted by the government, and ultimately, it changed into a comprehensive hospital mainly use western medicine. The change of TCM business in Hong Kong Donghua Hospital reflected the problems and situation of traditional Chinese medicine encountered in modern times.

Abstract
The temperature dependence of the hexagonal lattice parameter c of single crystal LaCoO3(LCO) with H = 0 and 800 Oe, as well as LCO bulk powders with H = 0, was measured using high-resolution x-ray scattering near the transition temperature To ≈35 K. The change of c(T) is well characterized by a power law in T − To for T>To and by a temperature independent constant for T<To when convoluted with a Gaussian function of width 8.5 K. This behavior is discussed in the context of the unusual magnetic behavior observed in LCO as well as recent generalized gradient approximation calculations.

Abstract
In this paper, we report the synthesis of a Li4Ti5O12/Graphene Nanoribbons (LTO/GNRs) composite using a solid-coating method. Electron microscope images of the LTO/GNRs composite have shown that LTO particles were wrapped around graphene nanoribbons. The introduction of GNRs was observed to have significantly improved the rate performance of LTO/GNTs. The specific capacities determined of the obtained composite at rates of 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, and 5 C are 206.5, 200.9, 188, 178.1 and 142.3 mAh·g(-1), respectively. This is significantly higher than those of pure LTO (169.1, 160, 150, 106 and 71.1 mAh·g(-1), respectively) especially at high rate (2 and 5 C). The LTO/GNRs also shows better cycling stability at high rates. Enhanced conductivity of LTO/GNRs contributed from the GNR frameworks accelerated the kinetics of lithium intercalation/deintercalation in LIBs that also leads to excellent rate capacity of LTO/GNRs. This is attributed to its lower charge-transfer resistance (Rct = 23.38 Ω) compared with LTO (108.05 Ω), and higher exchange current density (j = 1.1 × 10(-3) mA cm(-2))-about 20 times than those of the LTO (j = 2.38 × 10(-4) mA cm(-2)).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is the most common neonatal endocrine disorder in infancy. Dual oxidase 2 gene (DUOX2) mutations have been reported to be one of the leading genetic causes of CH. AIM The aim of this study was to screen for DUOX2 gene mutations among CH patients in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China and to define the relationships between DUOX2 genotypes and clinical phenotypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Blood samples were collected from 45 CH patients in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, and genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood leukocytes. All exons of the DUOX2 gene together with their exon-intron boundaries were screened by Sanger sequencing. RESULTS Sequencing analysis of DUOX2 in 45 CH patients revealed ten different variants in thirteen individuals. The variants included five known mutations, namely c.3329G>A (p.R1110Q), c.1588A>T (p.K530X), c.2635G>A (p.E879K), c.2524C>T (p.R842X) and c.4027G>T (p.L1343F), and one novel frame shift variant c.3340delC (p.L1114SfsX56), as well as four novel missense variants c.903G>T (p.W301C), c.2048G>T (p.R683L), c.1736T>C (p.L579P) and c.3413C>A (p.A1138D). The variant p.K530X is highly recurrent in our patient cohort but the clinical phenotypes vary greatly among those carrying this variant. Most patients with monoallelic or biallelic DUOX2 pathogenic variants turned out to be cases of transient congenital hypothyroidism (TCH), while three patients with triallelic DUOX2 pathogenic variants were associated with permanent congenital hypothyroidism (PCH). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of DUOX2 pathogenic variants was high (29 %) among patients with CH in Guangxi, China. Monoallelic and biallelic DUOX2 pathogenic variants were mainly associated with TCH, while triallelic DUOX2 pathogenic variants were associated with PCH. Our study expanded the DUOX2 mutation spectrum, and functional studies of the novel mutations need to be conducted in the future.

Abstract
PURPOSE The goal of this study was to compare the coronary atherosclerotic burden in patients with and without type-2 diabetes by using CT coronary angiography (CTCA). METHODS A total of 206 diabetic (mean age 67 ± 11 years; male: 136) and 523 non-diabetic patients (mean age 62 ± 13 years; male: 323) without history of coronary artery disease (CAD) underwent CTCA. The per-patient number of diseased coronary segments was determined, and each diseased segment was classified as showing obstructive lesion (luminal narrowing >50 %) or not. Coronary angiography was then performed to confirm diagnosis. RESULTS Diabetics showed a higher rate of abnormal CAD (76 vs. 53 % of patients; p < 0.0001) and fewer normal coronary arteries (24 vs. 47 %; p < 0.0001) compared with non-diabetics. Multi-vessel disease was seen more frequently in patients with diabetes than in patients without diabetes [15 % (n = 22) vs. 7 % (n = 62), respectively; p = 0.0004]. The per-patient number of segments with plaque (4.5 vs. 2.0, respectively; p < 0.0001) and the number of segments with obstructive disease (0.9 vs. 0.5, respectively; p = 0.0001) were higher for diabetic patients than for non-diabetic patients. CONCLUSION Diabetes was associated with higher coronary plaque burden.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether the low C-peptide levels (< 50 pmol/l) produced by the pancreas for decades after onset of Type 1 diabetes have clinical significance. METHODS We evaluated fasting C-peptide levels, duration of disease and age of onset in a large cross-sectional series (n = 1272) of people with Type 1 diabetes. We then expanded the scope of the study to include the relationship between C-peptide and HbA1c control (n = 1273), as well as diabetic complications (n = 324) and presence of hypoglycaemia (n = 323). The full range of C-peptide levels was also compared with 1,5-Anhydroglucitol, a glucose responsive marker. RESULTS C-peptide levels declined for decades after diagnosis, and the rate of decline was significantly related to age of onset (P < 0.0001), after adjusting for disease duration. C-peptide levels > 10 pmol/l were associated with protection from complications (e.g. nephropathy, neuropathy, foot ulcers and retinopathy; P = 0.03). Low C-peptide levels were associated with poor metabolic control measured by HbA1c (P < 0.0001). Severe hypoglycaemia was associated with the lowest C-peptide levels compared with mild (P = 0.049) or moderate (P = 0.04) hypoglycaemia. All levels of measurable C-peptide were responsive to acute fluctuations in blood glucose levels as assessed by 1,5-Anhydroglucitol (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Low C-peptide levels have clinical significance and appear helpful in characterizing groups at-risk for faster C-peptide decline, complications, poorer metabolic control and severe hypoglycaemia. Low C-peptide levels may be a biomarker for characterizing at-risk patients with Type 1 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ovarian cancer was one of the most diagnostic cancers for women and leading cause of death from gynecologic cancer. Most of the cases were at advanced stage when diagnosed. Platinum-based regimen was considered as the firs-line chemotherapy treatment modality. But most of the cases developed recurrence or resistance to platinum. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the activity and toxicity of bevacizumab combined with chemotherapy in the treatment of recurrence or platinum-refractory ovarian cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Totally, 37 ovarian cancer patients with complete data who treated with bevacizumab combined with chemotherapy were reviewed from the databases of Beijing Cancer hospital and included in this retrospective study. All included patients received >1 cycle of bevacizumab based combination therapy with eligible for the efficacy and toxicity assessments. The objective response rate (ORR) and toxicity were recorded and evaluated according to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) National Cancer Institute's Common Toxicity Criteria. RESULTS The ORR and disease control rate were 32.4% and 54.1% respectively by the RECIST criteria and 43.2%, 67.6% by CA125 criteria. The median progression-free survival for the 37 cases was 5.4 months with its range of 2.3-11.2 months. The two complete response patens had longest disease-free survival interval with one for 10.0 months and another for 11.2 months. The total grade III-IV hematologic toxicity and nonhematologic toxicity were 8.1% and 21.6% respectively. CONCLUSIONS With acceptable toxicity and relative well clinical activity, the bevacizumab combined chemotherapy can be a potential treatment modality for the recurrent or platinum-refractory ovarian cancer.

Abstract
The selection criteria for salvage liver transplantation (SLT) candidates have not been previously established. A global analysis for the association between the criteria and prognosis is required. All of the adult patients who underwent liver transplantation with a diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2011, were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 1,554 cases were involved, including 1,392 primary liver transplantation (PLT) and 162 SLT cases. All the cases were classified into 3 groups according to the Milan criteria combined with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), criteria, and significant differences were found between the 2 groups. The overall graft survival rate was lower in all cases of SLT than in PLT (P = .030). Within the Milan criteria, no significant difference in the graft survival rate was found between PLT and SLT. In a Cox regression analysis, the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) score and tumor levels graded according to the Milan/UCSF criteria were found to be independent risk factors for the graft survival rate. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated by the fatality risk values calculated by means of the Cox model and the 1-year graft survival rates of all the patients and of the SLT patients. The areas under the ROC curves were 0.922 and 0.935, respectively. Compared with PLT, the global graft survival rate of SLT was compromised. The MELD score and Milan/UCSF criteria were effective in predicting the prognosis of PLT and SLT. Therefore, when the recurrent lesions of HCC are within the Milan criteria, SLT can be performed with a good prognosis.

Abstract
We investigated the expression and distribution of N-cadherin during the development of a rat heart. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed to detect the expression and distribution of N-cadherin in the myocardial tissues of rats at embryonic day 18 (E18d), postnatal day 5 (P5d), postnatal day 19 (P19d), postnatal day 40 (P40d), and postnatal year 1 (P1y). Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to determine mRNA expression levels of N-cadherin in the myocardial tissues at E18d, P5d, P19d, P40d, and P1y. The IHC results showed that at E18d N-cadherin was dispersedly distributed both on the cell surface and in the cytoplasm of the myocardial cells, and gradually became concentrated at the end-to-end intercalated discs of the cardiomyocytes from birth through immaturity. In the young, middle-aged, and old rats, N-cadherin was typically distributed at the intercalated discs at the end of the myocardial cells. No significant differences in the mRNA expression levels of N-cadherin were detected in the myocardial tissue of rats at E18d, P5d, P19d, P40d, and P1y. During the development of the rat heart, observable changes in the distribution of N-cadherin occurred in the myocardial tissues, but there were no detectable changes in the expression of N-cadherin, indicating that N-cadherin is indispensable to maintaining the physical structure and function of the heart.

Abstract
We conducted a case-control study in a Chinese population to assess whether 5 common single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the vascular endothelial growth factor gene (VEGF) affect the risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The study population included 266 RCC patients who were newly diagnosed and histologically confirmed to have RCC as well as 532 cancer-free controls. Genotyping of VEGF -2578C/A, -1156G/A, +1612G/A, +936C/T, and -634G/C was conducted by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. RCC patients were more likely to have higher body mass index, and have a habit of tobacco smoking as well as suffer from diabetes. Conditional logistic regression analyses showed that individuals with the AA genotype and A allele of -2578C/A significantly increased the risk of RCC when compared with the CC genotype. Individuals carrying the CT and TT geno-types of +936C/T were correlated with an increased risk of RCC compared to the CC genotype. The T allele of +936C/T was associated with an increased risk of RCC. The -2578C/A and +936C/T polymorphisms in the VEGF gene may play a role in the etiology of RCC.

Abstract
Crown-root ratio (CRR) is commonly recorded when planning prosthodontic procedures. However, there is a lack of longitudinal clinical data evaluating the association between CRR and tooth survival. The aim of this longitudinal practice-based study was to assess the impact of CRR on the survival of abutment teeth for removable partial dentures (RPDs). Data were collected from 147 patients provided with RPDs at a dental hospital in Japan. In total, 236 clasp-retained RPDs and 856 abutment teeth were analyzed. Survival of abutment teeth was assessed using Kaplan-Meier methods and Cox's proportional hazard (PH) regression. The Cox PH regression was used to assess the prognostic significance of initial CRR value with adjustments for clinically relevant factors, including age, sex, frequency of periodontal maintenance programs, occlusal support area, type of abutment tooth, status of endodontic treatment, and probing pocket depth. Abutment teeth were divided into 1 of 5 risk groups according to CRR: A (≤0.75), B (0.76-1.00), C (1.01-1.25), D (1.26-1.50) and E (≥1.51). The 7-year survival rate was 89.1% for group A, 85.9% for group B, 86.5% for group C, 76.9% for group D, and 46.7% for group E. The survival curves of groups A, B, and C were illustrated to be quite similar and favorable. The multivariable analysis treating CRR as a continuous variable allowed estimation of the hazard ratio at any specific CRR value. When CRR = 0.80 was set as a reference, the estimated hazard ratio was 0.58 for CRR = 0.50 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.36-0.91), 1.13 for CRR = 1.00 (95% CI, 0.93-1.37), 1.35 for CRR = 1.25 (95% CI, 1.02-1.80), 1.53 for CRR = 1.50 (95% CI, 1.15-2.08), or 1.95 for CRR = 2.00 (95% CI, 1.44-2.65). These practice-based longitudinal data provide information to improve the evidence-based prognosis of teeth in providing prosthodontic procedures.

Abstract
The Chinese perch, or mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi), is a freshwater fish that is endemic to East Asia. In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity and structure of nine natural mandarin fish populations (from the Yangtze River and Amur River basins) and six hatchery stocks (from central and south China) using microsatellite markers. The results show that the genetic diversity of the Yangtze River populations was high and stable, and genetic differences between them were not significant. In contrast, a low level of genetic diversity and strong genetic structure were detected in the Amur River population. These results suggest that the Yangtze River region and the Amur River region should be treated as two separate units in conservation programs. The hatchery stocks exhibited low genetic diversity and significant genetic differentiation compared to natural populations; this may result in a significant impact on the species if escape events occur. Therefore, a scientific aquaculture management strategy is necessary for the long-term development of hatcheries.

Abstract
Amylin, a pancreatic peptide, and amyloid-beta peptides (Aβ), a major component of Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain, share similar β-sheet secondary structures, but it is not known whether pancreatic amylin affects amyloid pathogenesis in the AD brain. Using AD mouse models, we investigated the effects of amylin and its clinical analog, pramlintide, on AD pathogenesis. Surprisingly, chronic intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of AD animals with either amylin or pramlintide reduces the amyloid burden as well as lowers the concentrations of Aβ in the brain. These treatments significantly improve their learning and memory assessed by two behavioral tests, Y maze and Morris water maze. Both amylin and pramlintide treatments increase the concentrations of Aβ1-42 in cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). A single i.p. injection of either peptide also induces a surge of Aβ in the serum, the magnitude of which is proportionate to the amount of Aβ in brain tissue. One intracerebroventricular injection of amylin induces a more significant surge in serum Aβ than one i.p. injection of the peptide. In 330 human plasma samples, a positive association between amylin and Aβ1-42 as well as Aβ1-40 is found only in patients with AD or amnestic mild cognitive impairment. As amylin readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, our study demonstrates that peripheral amylin's action on the central nervous system results in translocation of Aβ from the brain into the CSF and blood that could be an explanation for a positive relationship between amylin and Aβ in blood. As naturally occurring amylin may play a role in regulating Aβ in brain, amylin class peptides may provide a new avenue for both treatment and diagnosis of AD.
