Abstract
We present a measurement of the ratio of top-quark branching fractions R = B(t --> Wb)/B(t --> Wq), where q can be a b, s, or a d quark, using lepton-plus-jets and dilepton data sets with an integrated luminosity of approximately 162 pb(-1) collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab during Run II of the Tevatron. The measurement is derived from the relative numbers of tt events with different multiplicity of identified secondary vertices. We set a lower limit of R > 0.61 at 95% confidence level.

Search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 95:071801. [PMID: 16196773 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.95.071801] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/03/2005] [Indexed: 05/04/2023]
Abstract
We present a search for long-lived doubly charged Higgs bosons (H(+/- +/-)), with signatures of high ionization energy loss and muonlike penetration. We use 292 pb(-1) of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Observing no evidence of long-lived doubly charged particle production, we exclude H(+/- +/-)(L) and H(+/- +/-)(R) bosons with masses below 133 GeV/c(2) and 109 GeV/c(2), respectively. In the degenerate case we exclude H(+/- +/-) mass below 146 GeV/c(2). All limits are quoted at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract
We present the first evidence of charmless decays of the B(0)(s) meson, the decay B(0)(s)--> phiphi, and a measurement of the branching ratio BR(B(0)(s)--> phiphi) using 180 pb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. In addition, the BR and direct CP asymmetry for the B+-->phiK+ decay are measured. We obtain BR(B(0)(s)--> phiphi)=[14(+6)(-5)(stat)+/-6(syst)] x 10(-6), BR(B+-->phiK+)=[7.6+/-1.3(stat)+/-0.6(syst)] x 10(-6), and A(CP)(B+-->phiK+)= -0.07+/-0.17(stat)+0.03 / -0.02(syst). Both decays are governed in the standard model by second order (penguin) b-->s(-)ss amplitudes.

Search for anomalous kinematics in tt dilepton events at CDF II. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 95:022001. Abstract
We report on a search for anomalous kinematics of tt dilepton events in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV using 193 pb(-1) of data collected with the CDF II detector. We developed a new a priori technique designed to isolate the subset in a data sample revealing the largest deviation from standard model (SM) expectations and to quantify the significance of this departure. In the four-variable space considered, no particular subset shows a significant discrepancy, and we find that the probability of obtaining a data sample less consistent with the SM than what is observed is 1.0%-4.5%.

Abstract
We report a measurement of the rate of prompt diphoton production in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV using a data sample of 207 pb(-1) collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. The background from nonprompt sources is determined using a statistical method based on differences in the electromagnetic showers. The cross section is measured as a function of the diphoton mass, the transverse momentum of the diphoton system, and the azimuthal angle between the two photons and is found to be consistent with perturbative QCD predictions.

Measurement of the W(+)W(-) production cross section in pp collisions at square root[s]=1.96 TeV using dilepton events. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:211801. Abstract
We present a measurement of the W(+)W(-) production cross section using 184 pb(-1) of p(p) collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Using the dilepton decay channel W(+)W(-)-->l(+)nul(-), where the charged leptons can be either electrons or muons, we find 17 candidate events compared to an expected background of 5.0(+2.2)(-0.8) events. The resulting W(+)W(-) production cross-section measurement of sigma(pp-->W(+)W(-))=14.6(+5.8)(-5.1)(stat)(+1.8)(-3.0)(syst) +/- 0.9(lum) pb agrees well with the standard model expectation.

Measurement of partial widths and search for direct CP violation in D0 meson decays to K-K+ and pi-pi+. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:122001. Abstract
We present a measurement of relative partial widths and decay rate CP asymmetries in K-K+ and pi(-)pi(+) decays of D0 mesons produced in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. We use a sample of 2x10(5) D(*+)-->D0pi(+) (and charge conjugate) decays with the D0 decaying to K-pi(+), K-K+, and pi(-)pi(+), corresponding to 123 pb(-1) of data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. No significant direct CP violation is observed. We measure Gamma(D0-->K-K+)/Gamma(D0-->K-pi(+))=0.0992+/-0.0011+/-0.0012, Gamma(D0-->pi(-)pi(+))/Gamma(D0-->K-pi(+))=0.035 94+/-0.000 54+/-0.000 40, A(CP)(K-K+)=(2.0+/-1.2+/-0.6)%, and A(CP)(pi(-)pi(+))=(1.0+/-1.3+/-0.6)%, where, in all cases, the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the lifetime difference between Bs mass eigenstates. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:101803. Abstract
We present measurements of the lifetimes and polarization amplitudes for B(0)(s)-->J/psiphi and B(0)(d)-->J/psiK(*0) decays. Lifetimes of the heavy and light mass eigenstates in the B(0)(s) system are separately measured for the first time by determining the relative contributions of amplitudes with definite CP as a function of the decay time. Using 203+/-15 B(0)(s) decays we obtain tau(L) = (1.05(+0.16)(-0.13) +/- 0.02) ps and tau(H) = (2.07(+0.58)(-0.46) +/- 0.03) ps. Expressed in terms of the difference DeltaGamma(s) and average Gamma(s), of the decay rates of the two eigenstates, the results are DeltaGamma(s)/Gamma(s) = (65(+25)(-33) +/- 1)% and DeltaGamma(s) = (0.47(+0.19)(-0.24) +/- 0.01) ps(-1).

Search for excited and exotic electrons in the egamma decay channel in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:101802. Abstract
We present a search for excited and exotic electrons (e(*)) decaying to an electron and a photon, both with high transverse momentum. We use 202 pb(-1) of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV with the Collider Detector at Fermilab II detector. No signal above standard model expectation is seen for associated ee(*) production. We discuss the e(*) sensitivity in the parameter space of the excited electron mass M(e(*)) and the compositeness energy scale Lambda. In the contact interaction model, we exclude 132 GeV/c(2)<M(e(*))<879 GeV/c(2) for Lambda = M(e(*)) at 95% confidence level (C.L.). In the gauge-mediated model, we exclude 126 GeV/c(2) < M(e(*)) < 430 GeV/c(2) at 95% C.L. for the phenomenological coupling f/Lambda approximately 10(-2) GeV-1.

First measurements of inclusive W and Z cross sections from run II of the fermilab tevatron collider. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2005; 94:091803. Abstract
We report the first measurements of inclusive W and Z cross sections times leptonic branching ratios for pp collisions at square root[s]=1.96 TeV, based on their decays to electrons and muons. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 72 pb(-1) recorded with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We test e-mu universality in W decays, and we measure the ratio of leptonic W and Z rates from which the leptonic branching fraction B(W-->lnu) can be extracted as well as an indirect value for the total width of the W and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element, |V(cs)|.

The standard model predictions for Wgamma and Zgamma production are tested using an integrated luminosity of 200 pb(-1) of pp collision data collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab. The cross sections are measured by selecting leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, and photons with transverse energy ET>7 GeV that are well separated from leptons. The production cross sections and kinematic distributions for the Wgamma and Zgamma data are compared to SM predictions.

Search for doubly charged Higgs bosons decaying to dileptons in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2004; 93:221802. Abstract
We present the results of a search for doubly charged Higgs bosons (H+/-+/-) decaying to dileptons (ll(')) using approximately 240 pb(-1) of pp collision data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. In our search region, given by same-sign ll(') mass m(ll('))>80 GeV/c(2) (100 GeV/c(2) for ee channel), we observe no evidence for H+/-+/- production. We set limits on sigma(pp -->H++H---->l(+)l('+)l(-)l('-)) as a function of the mass of the H+/-+/- and the chirality of its couplings. Assuming exclusive same-sign dilepton decays, we derive lower mass limits on H(+/-+/-)(L) of 133, 136, and 115 GeV/c(2) in the ee, mumu, and emu channels, respectively, and a lower mass limit of 113 GeV/c(2) on H(+/-+/-)(R) in the mumu channel, all at the 95% confidence level.

Measurement of the tt production cross section in pp collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV using dilepton events. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2004; 93:142001. Abstract
We report a measurement of the tt production cross section using dilepton events with jets and missing transverse energy in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. Using a 197+/-12 pb(-1) data sample recorded by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab, we use two complementary techniques to select candidate events. We compare the number of observed events and selected kinematical distributions with the predictions of the standard model and find good agreement. The combined result of the two techniques yields a tt production cross section of 7.0(+2.4)(-2.1)(stat)+1.6-1.1(syst)+/-0.4(lum) pb.

Abstract
We report on a search for B(0)(s)-->micro(+)micro(-) and B(0)(d)-->micro(+)micro(-) decays in pp collisions at square root of s=1.96 TeV using 171 pb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The decay rates of these rare processes are sensitive to contributions from physics beyond the standard model. One event survives all our selection requirements, consistent with the background expectation. We derive branching ratio limits of B(B(0)(s)-->micro(+)micro(-))<5.8x10(-7) and B(B(0)(d)-->micro(+)micro(-))<1.5x10(-7) at 90% confidence level.

Abstract
A phase 2 clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the antibody responses to bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (bPIV3) vaccination in young infants. Three groups were tested as follows: placebo (n=66) and 10(5) (n=64) or 10(6) (n=62) TCID(50) of bPIV3. The vaccine or placebo was administered intranasally at ages 2, 4, 6, and 12-15 months, and serum specimens were collected at ages 2, 6, 7, 12-15, and 13-16 months. Serum hemagglutination inhibition (HI) and IgA antibody titers against bPIV3 and human PIV3 (hPIV3) were measured. The results indicate that antibody responses to bPIV3 vaccination are more likely to be detected by the bPIV3 IgA and HI assays than by the hPIV3 IgA and HI assays, that bPIV3-induced antibody response can be differentiated from hPIV3-induced antibody response most reliably by comparing bPIV3 and hPIV3 HI titers, and that bPIV3 vaccine prevents vaccine recipients from developing antibody profiles of hPIV3 primary infection.

Abstract
Thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), a multifunctional protein that is able to function as a negative regulator of solid tumor progression and angiogenesis, is normally present at a very low level but rapidly elevated in pathological tissues. To understand the cellular regulation of TSP-1 expression, the mode of it's expression in Hep3B, SK-HEP-1, and porcine aortic endothelial (PAE) cells was examined in the presence of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), interleukin-6 (IL-6), interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), or phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). ATRA or IL-6 induced a dose-dependent increase of TSP-1 protein and mRNA levels in PAE cells, while they negatively regulated TSP-1 expression in the Hep3B and SK-HEP-1 cells. In contrast, PMA showed just the opposite effects on the TSP-1 expression in the same cells. IFN-gamma had little effect on TSP-1 level in Hep3B and PAE cells. The TSP-1 expression in SK-HEP-1 cells by these agents showed a close resemblance to that of liver cells rather than that of the endothelial cell line. Possible TSP-1 promoter-mediated responses by ATRA, IL-6, IFN-gamma, or PMA in Hep3B and PAE cells examined with luciferase activity of TSP-LUC reporter plasmid showed that levels of TSP-1 promoter activity were lower than that of the expressed TSP-1 protein and mRNA levels. Transfection of c-Jun and/or RARalpha expression vectors into Hep3B and PAE cells resulted in the enhanced TSP-1 promoter activity as well as the increments of of its protein and mRNA level. These results suggest that regulatory agents-induced TSP-1 expression may be attributed to mRNA stability and/or translational activation in concert with transcriptional activation and TSP-1 expression may be independently controlled via each signal pathway stimulated by PMA or ATRA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Intranasal influenza vaccine has proven clinical efficacy and may be better tolerated by young children and their families than an injectable vaccine. This study determined the potential cost-effectiveness (CE) of an intranasal influenza vaccine among healthy children. METHODS We conducted a CE analysis of data collected between 1996 and 1998 during a prospective 2-year efficacy trial of intranasal influenza vaccine, supplemented with data from the literature. The CE analysis included both direct and indirect costs. We enrolled 1602 healthy children aged 15 to 71 months in year 1, 1358 of whom were enrolled in year 2. One or 2 doses of intranasal influenza vaccine or placebo were administered to measure the cost per febrile influenza-like illness (ILI) day avoided. RESULTS During the 2-year study period, vaccinated children had an average of 1.2 fewer ILI fever days/child than unvaccinated children. In an individual-based vaccine delivery scenario with vaccine given twice in the first year and once each year thereafter at an assumed base case total cost of $20 for the vaccine and its administration (ie, per dose), CE was approximately $30/febrile ILI day avoided. CE ranged from $10 to $69/febrile ILI day avoided at $10 to $40/dose, respectively. In a group-based delivery scenario, vaccination was cost saving compared with placebo and remained so if vaccine cost was <$28 (the break-even price per dose). In the individual-based scenario, vaccination was cost saving if vaccine cost was <$5. In this scenario, nearly half of lost productivity in the vaccine group was attributable to vaccine visits, which overshadowed the relatively modest savings in ILI-associated costs averted. CONCLUSIONS Routine use of intranasal influenza vaccine among healthy children may be cost-effective and may be maximized by using group-based vaccination approaches. cost-effectiveness, influenza, vaccine, children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Trivalent formulations of an experimental, cold-adapted, intranasal influenza (CAIV) vaccine have been shown to be safe, immunogenic and efficacious in young children. METHODS We evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of three consistency lots of CAIV in children 12 to 36 months of age randomized to one of five groups: Groups 1, 2 and 3 received separate lots containing A/Shenzhen/227/95 (H1N1), A/Wuhan/359/95(H3N2) and B/Harbin/7/94-like viral strains. Group 4 received an earlier efficacy trial lot which included a different H1N1 strain (A/Texas/36/91-like); and Group 5 received placebo. We performed strain-specific serum hemagglutination inhibition antibody levels against type A (H3N2 or H1N1) or type B as appropriate. RESULTS Overall 474 children received 2 doses, 2 months apart. Each lot was well-tolerated, and there were no significant group differences between consistency lots in the proportion of children with fever and local or systemic reactions after vaccination. The 3 consistency lots were not statistically different with regard to immunogenicity as measured by seroconversion or absolute geometric mean titer. Immune responses were more robust among initially seronegative children and for H3N2 and B strains than for H1N1 strains. After 2 doses of vaccine 97, 84 and 62% had hemagglutination inhibition titers > or = 1/32 against A/H3N2, B and H1N1 strains, respectively. For A/H3N2 only, immune responses after 1 dose of vaccine are similar to those seen after 2 doses. CONCLUSIONS Each consistency lot of CAIV is as or more immunogenic than a lot used in a large efficacy trial.

Abstract
During a phase 2 trial of parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV3) vaccine, sequential serum samples were obtained from infants at 2, 6, 7, 12-15, and 13-16 months of age. Paired serum samples obtained at 2 and 6 months of age were used to estimate the biologic half-life of human PIV3 (hPIV3) maternal antibody in young infants. On the basis of the assumption that hPIV3 maternal antibody decays exponentially and constantly, the biologic half-life was estimated without adjusting for body weight increases. Cumulative proportions of hPIV3 infection in young infants were further estimated after adjusting for maternal antibody decline. A hemagglutination inhibition assay was used to quantify hPIV3 antibody. The mean (95% confidence interval) biologic half-life was estimated to be 51 (42-60) days, on the basis of which cumulative proportions of hPIV3 infection were estimated to be 11% at 6 months of age, 47% at 12-15 months of age, and 50% at 13-16 months of age.

Abstract
Influenza is a major cause of illness. We have assessed the safety, efficacy, and effectiveness of CAIV-T vaccine. A two year, multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, efficacy field trial in pre-school aged children was conducted; 1602 enrolled in Year One and 1358 (85%) returned in Year Two. In both study years combined, the overall vaccine efficacy against culture-confirmed influenza was 92% (95% CI: 88, 94). The vaccine efficacy was 95% (95% CI: 62, 99) against lower respiratory illness, 94% (95% CI: 90, 96) against febrile illness and 96% (95% CI: 88, 99) against otitis media associated with culture-confirmed influenza. A multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, effectiveness field trial was conducted in 4561 working adults aged 18 to 64 years. Episodes and days of febrile illness (FI), severe febrile illness (SFI), febrile upper respiratory illness (FURI), work loss, and health care use were assessed. Vaccination significantly reduced the numbers of SFI, 18.8% reduction (95% CI: 7, 29), and FURI, 26.3% reduction (95% CI: 13, 33); and led to fewer days of illness (22.9% reduction for FI, 27.3% reduction for SFI), fewer days of work lost (17.9% reduction for SFI, 28.4% for FURI), and fewer days of health care provider visits (24.8% for SFI, 40.9% for FURI). Prescription antibiotics and over-the-counter medications were also reduced. The vaccine was generally safe and well tolerated with no vaccine related serious adverse events. LAIV represents an additional important option for the control of influenza.

Abstract
The American public and its policymakers are beginning to recognize oral health as an integral part of overall health. Utilization of new technologies and preventive treatments has set a higher standard in the public's expectations of oral health and dentistry. There have been marked improvements in oral health indicators in the United States during the past century. However, some populations have not enjoyed the benefits realized by most Americans.

Abstract
By means of positron emission tomography (PET), we investigated the hemodynamic and metabolic state of the hyperfixation identified as the increased accumulation with 99mTc-d,l-hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (HMPAO) by single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with subacute stroke. We studied four patients with subacute stroke having hyperfixed areas evaluated with CBF, CMRO2, OEF and CBV by PET. The hyperfixation rate with 99mTc-HMPAO was obtained by comparing the surplus rate with standardized CBF. The OEF and CMRO2 values in the hyperfixed areas of 4 patients were significantly lower than those in normal 5 controls (p < 0.01), but CBF and CBV were almost the same in patients and normal controls, but the hyperfixation rate of 0.30 +/- 0.15 in 4 patients correlated well with CBV (r = 0.97, y = 11.75x + 0.42; p < 0.05). Hyperfixation with 99mTc-HMPAO in the infarct area revealing a mismatch between CMRO2 and CBF meant relative luxury perfusion. The hyperfixation rate determined by 99mTc-HMPAO brain SPECT correlated with CBV in the PET study. We can conclude that one of the main factors which caused hyperfixation was vasodilatation as well as the blood brain barrier disruption and the neovascularization.
