Abstract
Immunohistochemistry for haptoglobin (Hp) in the postischemic hippocampus demonstrated an immunoreactivity visible one day after reperfusion and continuing to increase until 14 days after ischemia. The immunoreactivity was most prominent in CA1 and the dentate hilar region, especially in cells with astroglial morphology. Double immunofluorescence histochemistry confirmed colocalization of the Hp and glial fibrillary acidic protein. Furthermore, a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction study confirmed an elevated Hp mRNA level in the postischemic hippocampus. The Hp gene expression was also upregulated in C6 and A-172 glioblastoma cell lines after H O treatment. These findings suggest that Hp is synthesized in reactive astrocytes in response to ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Abstract
To control intra-operative haemorrhage, fibrin glues are preferred by many surgeons because of their biological advantages and convenience of application. Manufacturers have developed a few kinds of fibrin glues with a little difference in their composition. This study was to compare the effectiveness of two commercially available fibrin glues; Greenplast (Green Cross P. D. Company, Yongin, Korea) and Tisseel (Baxter-Immuno AG, Vienna, Austria). They were applied experimentally to several kinds of surgery in dogs - renal vessel anastomosis, partial splenectomy, intestinal anastomosis and incision skin wound - and evaluated for their haemostatic and adhesive effects. When the two glues were applied in renal vessel anastomosis, the amount of haemorrhage in artery and vein decreased significantly. They also decreased the haemorrhage in partial splenectomy. At 10 min after application of the glues to an incision skin wound, the tensile strengths developed were significantly higher than that of control. The present study indicates that two-component fibrin glues have a haemostatic effect as a mechanical barrier in renal vessel anastomosis and an adhesive effect in the early stage of incision skin wound closure, and the two glues have similar effects with no complications.

Abstract
Several acute-phase plasma proteins, including haptoglobin (Hp), are induced in the liver in response to inflammation. Recently, we found that Hp gene expression is up-regulated by all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) in the extrahepatic monocytic cell line, THP-1. To investigate the molecular mechanism underlying ATRA-induced Hp gene expression, we analyzed the induction of transcription factor CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBP) isoforms in ATRA-stimulated THP-1 cells and their binding to the Hp promoter. Western blot analysis showed that treatment with ATRA increased C/EBPalpha and beta expression, but decreased that of C/EBPdelta. Electrophoretic mobility shift and supershift assays demonstrated that only C/EBPalpha of the C/EBP isoforms bound to the C/EBP DNA-binding sites in the Hp promoter. Furthermore, when ATRA-dependent Hp induction was inhibited by sodium butyrate or auranofin, induction of C/EBPalpha, but not C/EBPbeta, was also diminished. These results suggest that C/EBPalpha is involved in the activation of Hp gene expression by ATRA in human monocytic cells.

Abstract
Biological denitrification of high nitrate-containing wastewater was examined in a sulfur-packed column using a smaller amount of methanol than required stoichiometrically for heterotrophic denitrification. In the absence of methanol, the observed nitrate removal efficiency was only about 40%, and remained at 400 mg NO(3)(-)-N/l, which was due to an alkalinity deficiency of the pH buffer and of CO(2) as a carbon source. Complete denitrification was achieved by adding approximately 1.4 g methanol/g nitrate-nitrogen (NO(3)(-)-N) to a sulfur-packed reactor. As the methanol concentration increased, the overall nitrate removal efficiency increased. As influent methanol concentrations increased from 285 to 570, 855, and 1,140 mg/l, the value of Delta mg alkalinity as CaCO(3) consumed/Delta mg NO(3)(-)-N removed increased from -1.94 to -0.84, 0.24, and 0.96, and Delta mg SO(4)(2-) produced/Delta mg NO(3)(-)-N removed decreased from 4.42 to 3.57, 2.58, and 1.26, respectively. These results imply the co-occurrence of simultaneous autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification. Sulfur-utilizing autotrophic denitrification in the presence of a small amount of methanol is very effective at decreasing both sulfate production and alkalinity consumption. Most of methanol added was removed completely in the effluent. A small amount of nitrite accumulated in the mixotrophic column, which was less than 20 mg NO(2)(-) -N/l, while under heterotrophic denitrification conditions, nitrite accumulated steadily and increased to 60 mg NO(2)(-) -N/l with increasing column height.

Abstract
Effects of iron compounds on methanogenic fermentation the water polluted with fatty acids were studied. A natural readily available source of iron applicable to biological treatment of liquid wastes was searched for. A positive effect of iron on the methanogenic fermentation of fats and their degradation products--long-chain fatty acids--in aqueous media was demonstrated. It is recommended to add iron-containing clay, as an inexpensive and easily available iron source, in amounts providing the binding of the long-chain fatty acids present in wastewaters.

Abstract
Adipocyte differentiation is a very complex process in which whole-cell changes are accompanied. Among them, type I procollagen gene has been shown to specifically decrease during adipocyte differentiation; however, little is known about the molecular mechanism. To examine how type I procollagen gene expression is regulated at the level of transcription during adipocyte differentiation, 3T3-L1 preadipocyte cell line was used as an in vitro model. Northern blot analysis demonstrated that mRNA expression of type I procollagen gene was dramatically reduced during adipocyte differentiation. Time-course analysis indicated that decrease in mRNA expression occurred at early stage of differentiation. Studies on several stable cell lines showed that transcriptional activities of both alpha1 and alpha2 promoters decreased significantly during adipocyte differentiation. Despite extensive deletion-promoter analyses, however, we could not identify the cis-element responsible for the switch-off of type I procollagen gene during adipocyte differentiation, suggesting that the transcriptional repression of this gene occur through general transcription machinery rather than a specific cis-element. In conclusion, down-regulation of type I procollagen mRNA expression during adipocyte differentiation is due to repression of its promoter activity through general transcription machinery.

Abstract
Sulfur-utilizing denitrification can be performed by denitrifying sulfur bacteria under autotrophic and heterotrophic conditions. To investigate the effect of organics (methanol and landfill leachate) on sulfur-utilizing denitrification, six laboratory-scale sulfur packed columns were operated under autotrophic, mixotrophic and heterotrophic conditions for approximately 1 year. The performance of the columns was monitored by measuring the pH, nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, sulfide, alkalinity dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and turbidity. These tests indicated that the mixotrophic column had a higher nitrate removal capacity than the autotrophic column. It was also found that under mixotrophic conditions, some portion of nitrate was removed heterotrophically and the remainder was denitrified by sulfur-utilizing autotrophic bacteria without inhibition by organics. In addition, sulfate production and alkalinity consumption were reduced under mixotrophic conditions. These results suggest that mixotrophic conditions that allow simultaneous reactions of autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification provide significant advantages in terms of nitrate and DOC removal, sulfate production decrease, and alkalinity consumption over obligate autotrophic or heterotrophic denitrification.

Abstract
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) activates dual signal transduction systems via Galphas and Galphaq proteins. We now report a novel mechanism by which "cross-talk" may occur between the Galphas and Galphaq signaling pathways. RGS2 (Regulator of G protein Signaling 2) mRNA was rapidly and transiently increased only by PTH analogs (PTH1-84, 1-34, 1-31, and PTHrP) that activated the Galphas-mediated cAMP/PKA signaling pathway, whereas activation of the Galphaq-mediated Ca(2+)/PKC signaling pathway by PTH3-34 had no effect on RGS2 expression. Treatment of UMR106 cells with nonPTH activators of the cAMP/PKA signaling pathway such as cholera toxin, forskolin, 8-Br-cAMP, and dibutyryl-cAMP also significantly elevated RGS2 mRNA levels, while activator of the Galphaq pathway PMA did not. Pretreatment using the Galphas signaling pathway inhibitors SQ22536 and H89 significantly blocked PTH-induced RGS2 expression, but the Galphaq signaling pathway inhibitor bisindolylmaleimide I had no effect. Therefore, RGS2 expression is governed solely by the Galphas signaling pathway. Additionally, we demonstrate for the first time that RGS2 binds to both Galphas and Galphaq subunits in their transition state (GDP/AlF(-4)-bound) forms, suggesting that RGS2 has the potential to act as a bridge between the cAMP/PKA and Ca(2+)/PKC pathways, and that it may act as a cross-talk regulator for these two PTH signaling pathways.

Abstract
Pan-roasted beef showed a lower mutagenicity after various degrees of cooking than charcoaled one. The high mutagenicity of charcoaled beef was due to the formation of more heterocyclic amines, especially AalphaC (2-amino-9H-pyrido- [2,3-b]indole) and PhIP (2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine) because of rapid and direct heating on the surface of the meat at a high temperature. Seasoning decreased mutagenicity of pan-roasted beef except the very well done sample with unchanged heterocyclic amine contents, but increased mutagenicity of charcoaled beef with decreased levels of AalphaC and PhIP, probably due to the change of heterocyclic amine precursors or alternatively to the occurrence of other mutagens.

Abstract
One of the most common problems encountered in water treatment applications of membranes is fouling. Natural organic matter (NOM) represents a particularly problematic foulant. Membranes may be fouled by relatively hydrophilic and/or hydrophobic NOM components, depending on NOM characteristics, membrane properties, and operating conditions. To maximize flux recovery for an NOM-fouled ultrafiltration membrane (NTR 7410), chemical cleaning and hydraulic rinsing with a relatively high cross-flow velocity were investigated as cleaning strategies. The modification of the membrane surface with either an anionic or a cationic surfactant was also evaluated to minimize membrane fouling and to enhance NOM rejection. Foulants from a hydrophobic NOM source (Orange County ground water (OC-GW)) were cleaned more effectively in terms of permeate flux by acid and caustic cleanings than foulants from a relatively hydrophilic NOM source (Horsetooth surface water (HT-SW)). An anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)) was not effective as a cleaning agent for foulants from either hydrophobic or hydrophilic NOM sources. High ionic strength cleaning with 0.1 M NaCl was comparatively effective in providing flux recovery for NOM-fouled membranes compared to other chemical cleaning agents. Increased cross-flow velocity and longer cleaning time influenced the efficiency of caustic cleaning, but not high ionic strength cleaning. The membrane was successfully modified only with the cationic surfactant; however, enhanced NOM rejection was accompanied by a significant flux reduction.

Abstract
Amphiphilic polymeric conjugate based on cholic acid (CA) as the hydrophobic component and methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) as the hydrophilic component was synthesized using a 1,1'-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) mediated conjugation. Fluorescence spectroscopy measurements suggested that CA and MPEG (abbreviated as CE) conjugate was associated in water to form polymeric core-shell type nanoparticles with a critical association concentration (CAC) value of 0.063 g l(-1). From the transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation, CE nanoparticles were almost spherical with a size range of approximately 10-30 nm in the dried state, which was in agreement with the result from particle size measurement using photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS). Clonazepam (CNZ) was physically loaded into the CE nanoparticles with a 16.2 wt.% loading. CNZ release was pseudo zero-order in kinetic terms for up to 3 days.

Abstract
The xyl1 gene encoding xylose reductase was cloned from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified enzyme readily carried out xylose reduction in vitro. It prefers NADPH as the co-enzyme by about 80-fold over NADH. Compared to the native enzyme purified from S. cerevisiae (Kuhn et al., 1995), the recombinant xylose reductase displayed slightly higher (about two-fold) affinities (K(m)) for the substrate (xylose) and co-factor (NADPH), as well as a 3.9-fold faster turnover number (K(cat)) and 7.4-fold greater catalytic efficiency (K(cat)/K(m)). The reason for the apparent discrepancies in kinetic constants between the recombinant and native S. cerevisiae xylose reductases is not known. Replacement of Tyr49 by Phe in the recombinant enzyme led to greater than 98% loss of activity, suggesting that this residue plays a critical role in catalysis. Intrinsic enzyme fluorescence spectroscopic analysis showed that the wild-type and the Y49F variant both bound the co-enzyme NADPH with similar affinity. This supports the view that Tyr49 is involved in interaction with the substrate and not the co-factor during catalysis.

Abstract
The activities of two families of nitrifying bacteria were measured by applied respirometer and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for the purpose of monitoring nitrogen removal. Oxygen uptake rates (OUR) for Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter were separately measured with the dosing of selective inhibitors during respirometric monitoring. The FISH method was applied to analyze microorganism communities. In 5 mg NH4+-N/L solution, the total nitrogen oxygen demand (NOD) was found to be 6,672 mg DO/L-day with ammonia and nitrite oxidation rate of 4,512 and 2,160 mg DO/L-day, respectively. The oxygen consumption by endogenous oxidation was 288 mg DO/L-day and the biological oxygen demand 936 mg DO/L-day. Respirometric measurements were well matched by the FISH result, which described the presence and quantity of each nitrifying bacteria as nitrification proceeded. It was found that when coupled with OUR data, FISH could provide valuable information about the nitrogen removal process in many practical wastewater treatment systems.

Abstract
Evans' syndrome is characterised by the simultaneous or sequential occurrence of Coombs'-positive haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and immune thrombocytopenia without underlying aetiology. It has been found to be associated with collagen vascular diseases, especially systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and scleroderma. However, Evans' syndrome with dermatomyositis is very rare. A 59-year-old woman, who had been taking high-dose prednisolone for a month and cyclosporin for 10 days for dermatomyositis, developed purpura on the left popliteal fossa. The platelet and haemoglobin levels decreased to 77,000/mm3 and 9.8 g/dl, respectively. Antiplatelet antibody was positive. Thrombocytopenia responded to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) for a short time, but further decreased in a week. Her blood film showed features of haemolytic anaemia. Laboratory findings showed reticulocytosis and a positive direct Coombs' test. Bone marrow examination showed a mild hyperplasia of erythroid precursors and megakaryocytes. The patient was successfully treated with cyclophosphamide in addition to oral prednisolone. AIHA in connective tissue disease may develop gradually and show a benign clinical course in most patients. Therefore, we suggest that patients with dermatomyositis and anaemia should always be checked for haemolysis if there is no other explanation.

Abstract
Haptoglobin (Hp) is one of the acute-phase proteins and is mainly synthesized in the liver. During our study on the differentiation of leukemia cells, we have found that Hp is synthesized in human monocytic cells by all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA). The synthesis of Hp by ATRA is induced in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Hp cDNA cloned from ATRA-treated THP-1 cells corresponds to the Hp alpha 2(FS)-beta form. Whereas ATRA acted as a strong inducer in THP-1 cells, IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha, IL-6, and LPS had little effect on Hp gene expression in these cells. These findings suggest that THP-1 cells express the Hp gene through a signal pathway different from hepatocytes, and that ATRA is a potent Hp-inducer in these cells.

Abstract
The effects of 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TeCB), a PCB congener, and biphenyl on the cytoplasmic membranes of Ralstonia eutropha H850 were investigated by measuring fluorescence polarization using 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) as the probe, and determining the cellular fatty acid compositions. TeCB significantly affected the membrane of R. eutropha H850 cells grown on fructose by decreasing DPH fluorescence polarization. In contrast, the membrane of cells grown on biphenyl showed a considerably less significant effect of TeCB on membrane polarization than in fructose-grown cells. An increase in the ratio of total saturated to unsaturated fatty acids in cells grown on biphenyl suggested less of a fluidizing effect of TeCB on membranes in those cells. When biphenyl-grown cells were transferred back to a fructose medium, they required 25 generations for the membrane polarization and fatty acid compositions of these cells to revert back to those of the initial fructose-grown cells. The re-adaptation to a change in temperature required only five generations to return to normal. These results show that biphenyl affects cells in more ways than simply fluidizing the cytoplasmic membrane.

Abstract
Primary malignant lymphoma of the breast is rare. The incidence of primary malignant lymphomas of the breast is 0.04% to 0.5% of all malignant tumors of the breast and 0.07% of all non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, and comprises 1.7% of extranodal malignant lymphomas that occur in Western countries. The incidence of mucosa- associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma of the breast is reported to be between 0% and 75% of all primary malignant breast lymphomas in United States and Japan, but the incidence in Korea is unknown. MALT is characterized by indolent behavior and good has a prognosis. The authors report on a patient who has a primary MALT lymphoma of the breast. She was treated by surgical excision, which was followed by radiation therapy. Histologically, her lymphoma type transformed into a diffuse large B-cell tumor after 10months. She received combination chemotherapy and achieved a complete state of remission. She then underwent autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation along with high dose chemotherapy. To our knowledge, this is the first case report in the literature in Korea.

Abstract
To determine whether the tumor cell contamination of peripheral blood stem cells influences clinical impacts on high-dose chemotherapy in patients with metastatic breast cancer, we analyzed carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) mRNA in the apheresis products by nested RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction). A total of 38 metastatic breast cancer patients and ten normal healthy subjects as a negative control were included. Twenty out of 38 (51.3%) apheresis products from patients with metastatic breast cancer were positive for CEA mRNA. CEA mRNA was noted in 54.8% (17/31) of patients mobilized with chemotherapy plus G-CSF and 42.8% (3/7) of patients with G-CSF alone. There was no significant difference in age, estrogen receptor, menopausal status, mobilization method, disease free interval, or number of metastasis sites (1 vs > or = 2) between positive and negative groups. The presence of CEA mRNA in apheresis products did not influence the time to progression and overall survival in both groups. However, both the univariate and the multivariate analysis disclosed that the number of metastasis was associated with survival significantly. We suggest that the tumor cell contamination does not predict poor treatment outcome in patients with metastatic breast cancer.

Abstract
Few studies have examined the effects of smoking on the morbidity and mortality of lung cancer in Korean men. In Korea, where the prevalence of smoking is among the highest in the world, the morbidity and mortality of lung cancer are rapidly escalating. The objectives of this study were to prospectively examine the effects of smoking on lung cancer and to determine the combined effects of the amount, duration and age that smoking was started. The design was a prospective cohort study with a follow-up period of six years (1993-1998). The subjects included a total of 305,687 Korean men from 35 to 64 years of age who received health insurance from the Korea Medical Insurance Corporation and who had biennial medical evaluations in 1992. The main outcome measures were deaths from lung cancer. As a baseline, 58.2% were current cigarette smokers. Between 1993 and 1998, 891 lung cancer events (34.4/100,000 people per year) occurred. In multivariate Cox proportional hazards models controlling for age, exercise and alcohol use, current smoking increased the risk of lung cancer (risk ratio [RR], 5.6; 95% confidence interval [CI], 4.2 - 7.3). There were significant dose-response relationships to the amount, duration of smoking and age that smoking was started. Compared with nonsmokers, the RR from current smokers who smoked 20 cigarettes per day for over 30 years was 8.2 (5.9 - 11.3), the RR from current smokers who smoked for over 30 years and were less then 19 years of age when they started smoking was 7.8 (5.2 - 11.9), and the RR for those who smoke 20 cigarettes per day and were less than 19 years of age when they started smoking was 8.3 (5.9 -11.6). This study demonstrates that in Korea smoking is a major independent risk factor for lung cancer, and that the risk increases with an increased amount, longer duration, and younger starting age.

Abstract
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are worldwide pollutants and have caused hazardous effects on many animal species including humans. They have been detected in human milk and therefore exposure of newborns to PCBs is unavoidable if they are breast-fed. We present our findings on two experiments performed to test the effects of intermittent and continuous exposure of lactating rats to two different doses (80 microg and 8 microg) of Aroclor 1242 (a PCB congener) on testicular steroidogenic function of their adult male offspring. In experiment I, three groups of lactating dams received daily subcutaneous (SC) injections of either corn oil, 80 microg of Aroclor 1242 and 8 microg of Aroclor 1242 in corn oil, respectively. In experiment II, three groups of lactating dams received two SC injections per week of either corn oil or Aroclor 1242 (80 microg and 8 microg) in corn oil, respectively. Pups in all groups (n=8 per group) were weaned at day 21 and were raised on a normal diet until sacrificed at 90 days. Experiment I: Leydig cell number per testis was significantly (P<0.05) increased and the average volume of a Leydig cell was significantly (P<0.05) reduced in both groups of Aroclor-exposed rats compared to corn oil controls. Both doses of Aroclor resulted in reduced (P<0.05) serum testosterone levels compared to corn oil-treated controls. LH-stimulated testosterone production per testis and per Leydig cell was lower in Aroclor-exposed rats compared to controls. Experiment II: No changes were observed in Leydig cell size and number per testis among the three groups. Serum LH, testosterone and LH-stimulated testicular testosterone production in offspring rats of Aroclor-treated dams were not significantly different (P>.05) from the offspring of corn oil-treated dams. However, these parameters were lower in value in the offspring of dams treated with Aroclor 80 microg compared to the other two groups. LH-stimulated testosterone secretory capacity per Leydig cell was significantly lower in offspring of dams treated with Aroclor compared to controls. Serum T4 and T3 levels were not significantly different among the Aroclor-exposed and control rats in both experiments. These results demonstrate that continuous exposure of lactating mothers to 8 and 80 microg of Aroclor 1242 causes hypotrophy and malfunctioning of Leydig cells in the adult male offspring resulting in a hypoandrogenic status. Intermittent treatment of lactating mothers with 80 microg of Aroclor (but not with 8 microg of Aroclor) also produced malfunctioning of Leydig cells and a hypoandrogenic status in the absence of Leydig cell hypotrophy. However, the Aroclor 8 microg dose was ineffective to produce the above effects.

Abstract
Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are reported to have an increased risk of malignancy, especially lymphoproliferative disorders. We decribe the occurrence of ileocaecal intussusception secondary to Burkitt's lymphoma in a patient with SLE. A 23-year-old woman, who had been diagnosed with SLE 2 years ago, developed intermittent abdominal pain with a palpable mass. Computed tomography and a double-contrast barium enema showed a lobulated mass with intussusception at the ileocaecal junction. Right hemicolectomy and splenectomy was performed after histopathological examinations on colonoscopic biopsy revealed Burkitt's lymphoma. Fourteen months after chemotherapy, there is no evidence of recurrence of the Burkitt's lymphoma. When a patient with SLE has abdominal complaints, besides serositis, lupus enteritis such as peptic ulcer disease, mesenteric vasculitis with or without complications and pancreatitis, we have to consider intussusception secondary to gastrointestinal lymphoma as one of the differential diagnoses. Therefore, we should thoroughly investigate patients with SLE presenting with abdominal pain and not simply consider it afeature of lupus enteritis until other causes have been ruled out.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In some prospective studies, haemorrhagic stroke occurs more frequently in individuals with low serum cholesterol than in those with higher concentrations. We aimed to determine whether low total serum cholesterol is an independent risk factor for haemorrhagic stroke (intracerebral haemorrhage and subarachnoid haemorrhage) in South Korea, a country that has a population with relatively low concentrations of total serum cholesterol. METHODS We measured total serum cholesterol and other cardiovascular risk factors in 114,793 Korean men, aged between 35-59 years in 1990 and 1992, in a prospective observational study. We used data obtained in 1992 for smoking and alcohol consumption. We divided total serum cholesterol into quintiles (<4.31 mmol/L, 4.31-<4.74, 4.74-<5.16, 5.16-<5.69 and > or = 5.69). Our primary outcomes were hospital admissions and deaths from intracerebral and subarachnoid haemorrhage in a 6 year follow-up between 1993 and 1998. FINDINGS 528 men had a haemorrhagic stroke--372 intracerebral and 98 subarachnoid haemorrhage--and 58 were unspecified strokes. The relative risks of intracerebral haemorrhage in each quintile of total serum cholesterol (lowest to highest were: 1.22 (95% CI 0.88-1.69); 0.86 (0.60-1.21); 1.08 (0.78-1.48); and 1.03 (0.75-1.41). The corresponding relative risks for subarachnoid haemorrhage were: 1.44 (0.76-2.73); 1.13 (0.59-2.20); 1.21 (0.64-2.29); and 1.12 (0.59-2.14). INTERPRETATION Low total serum cholesterol is not an independent risk factor for either intracerebral or subarachnoid haemorrhagic stroke in Korean men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND CD44 is a cell surface adhesion molecule which has been implicated in various biologic functions as lymphocyte homing and activation, cellular migration and extracellular matrix adhesion. Over-expression of CD44v8-10 has been found in several cancers and is considered to be associated with tumor progression and metastasis. Recently, a novel molecular method, CD44v8-10/CD44v10 competitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) has been developed for detecting cancer cells over-expressing CD44v8-10. METHODS We analyzed from benign and malignant pleural effusion and ascites by CD44 competitive RT-PCR and compared to the conventional cytology. RESULTS The CD44 competitive RT-PCR analysis showed that all the 24 samples associated with benign disease presented a predominant expression of the CD44v10 transcript (v8-10/v10 ratio: 0.126-0.948), whereas 6 of 7 malignant pleural samples associated with cytology positive cancer expressed the CD44v8-10 transcript (v8-10/v10 ratio > 1.00). CONCLUSION These results indicate that CD44 competitive RT-PCR assay is a useful and adjunct to cytological examination in cancer diagnosis, especially in detecting exfoliated cancer cells in pleural effusion.
