Abstract
In experimental animal studies, tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) contributed to renal hypertrophy during diabetes, and antibodies against TNF-α have led to improved histological lesions in animals with nephrotoxicity and diabetic nephropathy. We aimed to evaluate TNF-α system activity in association with renal histology in patients with type 2 diabetes. This is a prospective, cross-sectional study of 22 patients with type 2 diabetes (16 men), 13 with microalbuminuria and 9 with normoalbuminuria. Plasma-soluble TNF-α receptor 1 and 2 (sTNFR1 and sTNFR2) concentrations were used as surrogates of TNF-α system activity. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was analysed using I(125)-Iodothalamine. Albumin excretion rate (AER) and a renal biopsy were performed in all subjects. AER did not associate significantly with mesangial expansion or interstitial fraction in these subjects (r < 0.12, P > 0.5). AER was also not associated with either sTNFR1 or sTNFR2 levels. However, after controlling for GFR, the correlation between AER and sTNFR1 became significant (r = 0.47, P = 0.03). sTNFR1 correlated with age (r = 0.65, P < 0.001), mesangial expansion (r = 0.59, P = 0.004) and interstitial fraction (r = 0.58, P = 0.005). After controlling for age, body mass index and blood pressure, the association of TNFR1 with mesangial expansion persisted significant. Circulating sTNFR2 concentrations were not significantly associated with histological changes. In summary, structural kidney damage in patients with type 2 diabetes is associated with TNF-α system activity and specifically with plasma sTNFR1 concentrations.

Abstract
Between September 2010 and October 2011, the Unit of Epidemiology in the Department of Public Health in Bizkaia, Spain identified eight cases of Salmonella Paratyphi B var Java infection and three cases of infection with its possible monophasic variant 4,5,12:b:- dT+. Six cases reported contact with turtles and S. Java was isolated from three of these turtles' habitats. The isolates from the patients and their respective turtles were indistinguishable by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Although other reptiles can also carry Salmonella, turtles pose a special risk, as they are commonly kept as pets for children. This emphasizes the need to give recommendations regarding ownership and handling of aquatic turtles and other reptiles. As parents are often not aware of the risk of infection associated with the presence of turtles in the household, it would be appropriate to inform potential buyers at points of sale about the risk of infection and measures they can take to minimise this risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Microthrombosis is often observed in lupus nephritis (LN) lesions, but its clinical significance is unknown. We evaluated the clinicopathologic correlations of renal microthrombosis and inflammatory markers in LN. METHODS Kidney biopsies from 58 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) proliferative nephritis were analyzed with immunohistochemistry (IHC) for intravascular platelet aggregates (CD61), macrophagic infiltration (CD68), and activated complement deposition (C4d). Clinical data at the time of kidney biopsy and follow-up were analyzed with regard to pathologic IHC data. RESULTS Microthrombosis was present in 52% of the tissues. It was significantly more prevalent in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs) (62% versus 42%). The presence of microthrombosis significantly correlated with higher macrophagic infiltration. Macrophagic infiltration but not microthrombosis was significantly correlated with C4d deposition. Only macrophagic infiltration showed a correlation with SLE and renal activity (proteinuria and active sediment), whereas neither the presence of CD61+ microthrombi nor the extent of C4d deposition correlated with LN severity or outcome. CONCLUSIONS Microthrombosis is associated with higher macrophagic infiltration in LN but does not seem to increase independently the severity of renal damage. Macrophagic infiltration was the best marker of SLE and renal activity in this LN series.

Abstract
Levels of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), including ΣDDTs, γ-HCH, HCB, aldrin, isodrin, trans-nonachlor, heptachlor and dieldrin, were determined in the razor clam, Ensis siliqua, collected monthly from February 2003 to April 2004 from the Islas Cíes in Ría de Vigo (Galicia, Spain). The sum of DDTs ranged from 2.17 to 26.9 ng g(-1) dry weight (dw). Principal component analysis showed seasonal trends in the levels of some OCPs (γ-HCH and dieldrin). Pearson correlations (p < 0.05) were observed between OCP levels and the biometric parameters of condition index and body lipids.

Abstract
A metal-arsenic polluted soil from sulphide-mine waste was treated, in all possible combinations, with two different amounts of marble sludge (98% CaCO3), compost (41% organic carbon), and Byferrox (70% Fe). Lixiviate and pore water from each treated and untreated soil were analysed, and lettuce-seed bioassays were performed. None of the treatments decreased the electrical conductivity of lixiviates or the concentrations of all pollutants found in both solutions. Marble sludge and compost increased the pH values and decreased the zinc, cadmium, copper, and lead concentrations in both solutions while increasing the arsenic concentrations in the lixiviates. Byferrox did not alter the physicochemical parameters or the concentrations of zinc, cadmium, copper, or lead in either solution but significantly decreased the arsenic concentrations in pore water. Compared with the Byferrox treatment, the mixture of marble sludge and Byferrox decreased redox potential values, increasing the arsenic concentrations in both solutions and the electrical conductivity of the pore water. All lixiviates were highly phytotoxic and seeds did not germinate. Pore-water phytotoxicity was related to electrical conductivity values and heavy-metal concentrations. The combination of marble sludge and compost was most effective at diminishing toxicity in lettuce. The soils treated with Byferrox, alone or mixed with marble sludge or compost, were the most phytotoxic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Knee arthroplasty is the treatment of choice for gonarthrosis. The development of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) requires assessing results based on the classical approaches and this is the purpose of our study. METHODS Randomized, prospective study comparing two groups; one underwent MIS (45 patients) and the second one a classical approach (51 patients); both groups were comparable. The following variables were assessed in the immediate postoperative period and at 4 and 8 years: blood loss, pain according to the VAS, flexion and extension and quality of life measured with the SF-36. RESULTS In the immediate postoperative period we observed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in favor of the MIS approach in pain, hospital stay and blood loss. However, this was not observed at 4 and 8 years concerning pain, quality of life and range of motion. We observed an improvement in the functional scale and quality of life compared with the preoperative status, without any differences when both groups were compared. CONCLUSIONS The MIS technique results in a better immediate postoperative period, but no differences were seen in the choice of the approach 4 and 8 years after surgery.

Abstract
We discuss theoretical properties and estimation of continuous-time ARMA (CARMA) processes, which are driven by a stable Lévy process. Such processes are very useful in a continuous-time linear stationary setup: they have a similar structure as the widely used ARMA models and provide all advantages of a continuous-time model. As an application we consider data from a deregulated electricity market. Here, we fit a CARMA(2,1) model to spot prices from the Singapore New Electricity Market. The quality of the estimates is assessed in a simulation study. The continuous-time modelling aims at a new pricing methodology for energy derivatives.

Abstract
Current performance of iron oxide nanoparticle-based contrast agents in clinical use is based on the unspecific accumulation of the probes in certain organs or tissues. Specific targeted biofunctional nanoparticles would significantly increase their potential as diagnostic and therapeutic tools in vivo. In this study, multimodal fluorescent/magnetic glyco-nanoparticles were synthesized from gold-coated magnetite (glyco-ferrites) and converted into specific probes by the covalent coupling of protein G and subsequent incubation with an IgG antibody. The immuno-magnetic-fluorescent nanoparticles were applied to the specific labelling of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in a complex biological medium, as human blood. We have been able to label specifically PBMCs present in blood in a percentage as low as 0.10-0.17%. Red blood cells (RBCs) were also clearly labelled, even though the inherent T(2) contrast arising from the high iron content of these cells (coming mainly from haemoglobin). The labelling was further assessed at cellular level by fluorescence microscopy. In conclusion, we have developed new contrast agents able to label specifically a cell population under adverse biological conditions (low abundance, low intrinsic T(2), high protein content). These findings open the door to the application of these probes for the labelling and tracking of endogenous cell populations like metastatic cancer cells, or progenitor stem cells that exist in very low amount in vivo.

Abstract
Thirty-five soil samples were taken from unconfined mine waste, stream sediments, and surfaces unoccupied by mining and presumably unaffected by it, in a sulphur-mining zone surrounded by carbonate material and characterized by a semi-arid climate with short torrential storms. These samples were analysed and the results compared to estimate the spread of pollution in the landscape and to assess potential environmental risk. The mean concentrations of S, Zn, Cd, Pb, and As in mine waste were between 3.5-fold (As) and 50-fold (S) greater than unaffected soils. Oxidation of S led to a sharp drop in pH, strong weathering of minerals, and solubilisation of the constituent elements, forming a toxic acidic mine drainage with highly concentrated pollutants that were discharged into the drainage channels. Successive acid mine drainage into the soil on the valley floor spreads acidification and pollution downstream. The high carbonate content in surrounding soils played an important role in the increase of the pH and precipitation of S, Pb, and Al of the affected soils. Meanwhile, high mobility of Zn, Cd and As under basic conditions and a low Fe concentration explain the broad spread of these elements, as high concentrations were detected in soil more than 2000 m from the source. Only the soil solutions from near the waste dump (first 500 m) were highly phytotoxic, and moderately phytotoxic from 500 to 1500 m away. The concentration of pollutants in the leachates was clearly higher than in soil solutions, even in the soils located over 2000 m from the source, implying that the size of the polluted area will increase with time.

Abstract
Imatinib mesylate (IM) is the treatment of choice in patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), irrespectively of their age. Nevertheless, information regarding tolerability and responses in advanced-age patients, a subgroup in which co-morbidities and other factors may influence outcome, is scarce, since they were excluded from most clinical trials. In this observational study (ELDERGLI), information regarding demographics, concomitant medication, physical examination, performance status, hemogram, biochemistry, hematologic, cytogenetic and molecular responses, time to progression, adverse events (AE) and severe adverse events (SAE) were prospectively recorded in a series of 36 elderly patients with CML, with a median age of 76.6 years. Most patients had cardiovascular co-morbidities, especially hypertension. Regarding IM toxicity, around one third of patients required treatment interruptions because of adverse events, especially hematologic toxicity (66% of cases that needed dose interruptions). When analyzing non hematologic adverse events, the most frequent ones were superficial edemas and GI symptoms. Of note, 9 of patients experienced an infection episode during the follow-up, and 4 were diagnosed during the study period of another type of cancer. Finally, cardiovascular events were reported in 7 patients, most of them with prior cardiovascular risk factors. Regarding responses, after 12 months of imatinib therapy, the rate of complete hematologic response (CHR), complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) and major molecular response (MMolR) were 89%, 72% and 55% respectively. In summary, IM display, in advanced-age patients with chronic phase CML, an efficacy and safety profile comparable to younger patients.

Abstract
A versatile nanoplatform based on magnetic glyconanoparticles (glyco-ferrites) to attach well-oriented antibodies is described. An efficient ligand exchange process has been used to prepare water-soluble 6-nm-sized core-shell Fe(3)O(4)@Au nanoparticles bearing amphiphilic carbohydrates and aliphatic ethylene glycol chains ended in a carboxyl group. The covalent immobilization through the carboxyl group of an Fc receptor (protein G) enables successful well-oriented capture of immunoglobulins G onto the magnetic glyconanoparticle. A thorough characterization of structure and biofunctionality of the constructs is carried out by different techniques. The selective immunolabeling of cells by the antibody-magnetic glyconanoparticle conjugates is demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as by fluorescence techniques.

Abstract
Neurofeedback therapies are an emerging technique used to treat neuropsychological disorders and to enhance cognitive performance. The feedback stimuli presented during the therapy are a key factor, serving as guidance throughout the entire learning process of the brain rhythms. Online decoding of these stimuli could be of great value to measure the compliance and adherence of the subject to the training. This paper describes the modeling and classification of performance feedback potentials with a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), under a real neurofeedback training with five subjects. LDA and SVM classification techniques are compared and are both able to provide an average performance of approximately 80%.

Abstract
PCBs were determined in wild mussel samples collected in several points from Galician Rías (Rías de Ferrol, A Coruña, Muros, Vigo and Arousa), Spain, during the period 1998-2008. The concentration levels of ΣPCBs ranged from 0.62 to 107.5 ng g(-1), w.w. The isomer concentrations in the Mytilus galloprovincialis were in the order hexachlorobiphenyls>pentachlorobiphenyls>tetrachlorbiphenyls>trichlorobiphenyls. CBs 153, 138 and 101 congeners were the most abundant in these samples. Two biological parameters, fat content and condition index (CI), have also been investigated for these mussel samples. Univariate techniques confirm that levels of some compounds, CBs 28, 52, 138, 153, and 180, presented significant relation (p<0.05) with biological parameters. Multivariate techniques of data exploration such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that spatial trends of PCB levels appeared in the studied samples. Rias de Ferrol and A Coruña presented the highest levels of PCBs and Ría de Arousa the lowest levels of these compounds. In general, temporal trends (linear regressions) showed a decrease of PCB levels along the period 1998-2008.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Coronary disease is the leading cause of death in women, and consequently, identification of cardiovascular risk factors must be a priority. Recent studies have linked pregnancy disturbances and coronary disease, but this hypothesis has remained unproved in Hispanic women. OBJECTIVE The association of traditional risk factors and pregnancy disturbances with coronary heart disease was assessed in a sample of women with premature coronary disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS The case control study included only women <55 years old, who had undergone a coronary angiography. Two hundred women were included, 100 without and 100 with coronary disease, and with mean ages of 46.5±4.3 and 49.5±3.7 years, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between risk factors and coronary disease. Crude and multivariate adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. RESULTS Univariate analysis showed an association between coronary disease and the past medical history of preeclampsia, premature delivery, low birth weight, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia and smoking habit. Logistic regression analysis showed an association of premature delivery (OR=6.0, 95%CI 2.3-15.0, p<0.01), hypercholesterolemia (OR=4.1, 95%CI 2.1-7.8, p<0.01) and smoking habit (OR=1.7, 95%Ci 0.9-3.2, p=0.08). The practice of regular physical activity was identified as a protection factor (OR=0.5, 95%CI 0.3-1.0, p=0.04). CONCLUSION Pregnancy disturbances and traditional risk factors were related to an increased risk of coronary artery disease in a Hispanic population of women with premature coronary disease.
