Abstract
BACKGROUND Findings from family and twin studies support a genetic contribution to the development of sexual orientation in men. However, previous studies have yielded conflicting evidence for linkage to chromosome Xq28. METHOD We conducted a genome-wide linkage scan on 409 independent pairs of homosexual brothers (908 analyzed individuals in 384 families), by far the largest study of its kind to date. RESULTS We identified two regions of linkage: the pericentromeric region on chromosome 8 (maximum two-point LOD = 4.08, maximum multipoint LOD = 2.59), which overlaps with the second strongest region from a previous separate linkage scan of 155 brother pairs; and Xq28 (maximum two-point LOD = 2.99, maximum multipoint LOD = 2.76), which was also implicated in prior research. CONCLUSIONS Results, especially in the context of past studies, support the existence of genes on pericentromeric chromosome 8 and chromosome Xq28 influencing development of male sexual orientation.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Essential oils have been found to exert antibacterial, antifungal, spasmolytic, and antiplasmodial activity and therapeutic effect in cancer treatment. In this study, the antibacterial activities of four main essential oils' components (thymol (Thy), eugenol (Eug), berberine (Ber), and cinnamaldehyde (Cin)) were evaluated against two food-borne pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium, either alone or in combination with streptomycin. Checkerboard assay demonstrated that Thy and Cin elicited a synergistic effect with streptomycin against L. monocytogenes, while a synergy existed between Cin or Eug and streptomycin against Salm. Typhimurium. Further experiments showed that this synergy was sufficient to eradicate biofilms formed by these two bacteria. Thus, our data highlighted that the combinations of specific components from essential oils and streptomycin were useful for the treatment of food-borne pathogens, which might help prevent the spread of antibiotic resistance through improving antibiotic effectiveness. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study has shown the synergistic effect of four components of essential oil (thymol, eugenol, berberine and cinnamaldehyde) combined with streptomycin on planktonic and biofilm-associated food-borne pathogens Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella Typhimurium. These findings indicate that combination of specific components of essential oils with streptomycin may provide alternative methods to overcome the problem of food-borne bacteria both in suspension and in biofilm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Few data is available on the nutritional status of old Chinese. The present study aimed to describe the nutritional status and clinical correlates for malnutrition risk in the older people. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Hospital- and community-based older people were recruited in the region of Chongqing, China. PARTICIPANTS 558 individuals aged 60 years old or over between April 2011 and October 2012. MEASUREMENTS Comprehensive geriatric assessment was performed and nutritional status was assessed by the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF). Nutrition-associated factors were analyzed, including health status (chronic diseases, depression, cognition, function impaired), social factors (education status, marital status, the type of work before 60 years old) and life style factors (smoking, drinking, diet). RESULTS The mean age was 73.1±8.0 years and 43.9% were men. Prevalence of malnutrition and risk for malnutrition were 3.2% and 19.3 %, respectively. Several factors increased poor nutrition independently including self-rated health, comorbidity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, gastrointestinal disease and cognitive impairment. Fish decreased the risk of poor nutrition. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence was relatively low in older people of Chongqing, Southwest China. Poor nutrition was found to be increased due to the common health problems. Thus the patients with these problems should pay more attention on nutritional status. The older people should often have fish because of their nutritional benefit.

Abstract
Total Monte Carlo (TMC) is a method to propagate nuclear data (ND) uncertainties in transport codes, by using a large set of ND files, which covers the ND uncertainty. The transport code is run multiple times, each time with a unique ND file, and the result is a distribution of the investigated parameter, e.g. dose, where the width of the distribution is interpreted as the uncertainty due to ND. Until recently, this was computer intensive, but with a new development, fast TMC, more applications are accessible. The aim of this work is to test the fast TMC methodology on a dosimetry application and to propagate the (56)Fe uncertainties on the predictions of the dose outside a proposed 14-MeV neutron facility. The uncertainty was found to be 4.2 %. This can be considered small; however, this cannot be generalised to all dosimetry applications and so ND uncertainties should routinely be included in most dosimetry modelling.

Abstract
We examined the ability of mifepristone to reverse the in vitro drug resistance of human cervical cancer cells resistant to mitomycin-C (HeLa/MMC) cells and investigated the mechanism of this effect. A 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay was performed to detect the drug resistance of HeLa/MMC cells and the reversed drug resistance in vitro. Expression levels of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax), and glucosylceramide synthase (GCS) were measured in HeLa and HeLa/MMC cells. The resistance index of HeLa/MMC cells on MMC was reduced from 5.02 to 1.46 after 10 mg/mL mifepristone exposure. A combination of mifepristone upregulated the Bax/Bcl-2 protein expression ratio and apoptosis in HeLa/MMC cells. GCS expression was significantly higher in HeLa/MMC cells than in HeLa cells (P < 0.01), but distinctly declined in both cell lines after mifepristone application (P < 0.01). Mifepristone reversed the resistance of HeLa/MMC cells to MMC in vitro; the overexpression of the GCS gene and the increased expression of apoptosis-related protein Bcl-2 may play important roles in the formation of multidrug resistance in cervical cancer.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate effective treatment methods of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Twenty-three patients with MPM were cured by pleural infusion chemotherapy after surgery. Median survival time and the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were analyzed on the basis of follow-up. Median survival time of all patients was 15 months (range: 3 to 89 months); the 1-, 2-, and 3-year survival rates were 69.6, 43.5, and 13.0%, respectively. The 1-year survival rates of patients in stages I, II, and III were 83.3, 62.5, and 33.3%, respectively, the 2-year survival rates were 50, 37.5, and 33.3%, respectively, and the 3-year survival rates were 34, 23, and 0%, respectively. Surgery-oriented comprehensive treatment was adopted for MPM, which could improve the prognosis and life quality of patients to some extent.

Abstract
Birth oxidative stress is an oxidative response to a sudden transition process from maternal mediated respiration in uterus to autonomous pulmonary respiration outside the uterus. Meanwhile, oxidative stress has been demonstrated to be associated with various pathologies recorded in newborns. So, this research aimed to study the oxidative stress and the development of antioxidant system in newborn piglets. The measured variables include plasma lipid, protein and DNA oxidant injury, the activities of plasma antioxidant enzymes and the jejunal and ileal antioxidant gene expressions at 1, 7, 14, and 21 days after birth. Meanwhile, the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), transcription factor p65, and tumor protein 53 (p53) were determined by western blot. The results showed that newborn piglets suffered seriously from birth oxidative stress because of the naive antioxidant system. In addition, oxidant injury activated Nrf2 signaling pathway, resulting in the expression of antioxidant genes and release of antioxidant enzymes. With the development of antioxidant system, the oxidative balance gradually recovered on Day 7 after birth. In conclusion, birth caused oxidative stress and the oxidative balance gradually recovered with the development of antioxidant system.
