Abstract
Gamma/delta T-cell lymphoma (GDTL) is an uncommon lymphoma that was initially reported to involve only the liver and spleen. GDTL other than the hepatosplenic type is extremely rare. Frequent primary sites include skin and subcutaneous tissue, intestine, or nasal region. We report a case of GDTL of the omentum in a 54 year-old-man. The tumor cells are CD2-, CD3+, CD4-, CD5-, CD8+, CD56+, TIA-1+, granzyme B+/-. They expressed the identical phenotype of intestinal GDTL. The patient was treated with 2 courses of CHOP which comprised cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine and prednisolone, and 3 courses of EPOCH which comprised etoposide, prednisolone, vincristine, cyclophosphamide and doxorubicin. However, he failed to obtain remission. During the fourth course of EPOCH, muscle weakness of the lower extremities developed and intracranial masses were observed by computed tomographic scan of the brain. Dissemination of lymphoma to the central nervous system was considered and it may be attributable to the expression of CD56 in this case. High dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) chemotherapy successfully eliminated the omental tumor and reduced the size of the intracranial masses, thus HD-MTX appears to be an effective treatment against GDTL.

Abstract
Outer mitochondrial membrane cytochrome b5 (OMb) originally found in rat liver is an isoform of cytochrome b5 (b5) of the endoplasmic reticulum. In contrast to accumulated data on the physiological roles of b5, functions of OMb have not been well characterized except for its involvement in regeneration of ascorbic acid [i.e., in a semidehydroascorbate reductase (SDAR) system]. By using highly specific antibodies against rat OMb, we found immunohistochemically that OMb in the rat adrenal gland was most abundant in the zona glomerulosa (zG) among the three cortical zones, and the expression level was enhanced on angiotensin II-stimulation. SDAR activity was found in zG and inhibited by anti-OMb antibody. Moreover, the increase in plasma aldosterone concentration under Na+ -deficiency was suppressed by limited ascorbic acid (Asc) availability in rat mutants unable to synthesize Asc, while plasma corticosterone concentration was not affected. These data suggest that OMb, present abundantly in zG, participates in aldosterone formation in zG of rat under angiotensin II-stimulation through regeneration of Asc.

Abstract
We report the direct observation of a precursor state for the cycloaddition reaction (the di-sigma bond formation) of ethylene on Si(100)c(4 x 2) using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy at low temperature, and the meta-stable precursor state is identified as a weakly bonded pi-complex type. The activation energy from the pi-complex precursor to the di-sigma bonded species is experimentally estimated to be 0.2 eV. First-principles calculations support the pi-complex precursor mediated cycloaddition reaction of ethylene on Si(100)c(4 x 2).

Abstract
We hypothesize that high intensity training for Thoroughbred horses that have been subjected to conventional training could further improve the metabolic properties of the middle gluteal muscle. Nine well-trained horses were subjected to high intensity (80-100% Vdot;O(2)max, 5 minx2) training for 12 weeks. Biopsy samples were obtained from the muscle before and after 4 and 12 weeks of training. Three of the 9 horses did not complete the training programme. In the remaining 6 horses, activities of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH), phosphofructokinase (PFK) and 3-hydroxy acyl CoA dehydrogenase (HAD), and the composition of myosin heavy chain isoforms were analyzed by biochemical techniques. After 12 weeks of training, a significant increase was found in PFK activity but not in the SDH and HAD activities. There were no significant changes in the composition of myosin heavy chain isoforms. The high intensity training in this study was effective at increasing glycolytic enzyme activity, indicating the possibility to improve anaerobic capacity, which potentially could contribute greatly to performance in Thoroughbred horses. This study also highlighted a fact that high intensity training should be given with the great care to prevent the skeletal muscle injuries.

Abstract
Four kinds of 1:1 and 1:3 salts of 3-[4-(trimethylammonio)phenyl]-1,5-diphenyl-6-oxoverdazyl radical cation ([1](+)) and its mono- and dimethyl derivatives ([2](+) and [3](+)) with Ni(dmit)(2) anions (dmit = 1,3-dithiol-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) ([1](+)[Ni(dmit)(2)](-) (4), [2](+)[Ni(dmit)(2)](-) (5), [3](+)[Ni(dmit)(2)](-) (6), and [1](+)[Ni(dmit)(2)](3)(-) (7)) have been prepared, and the magnetic susceptibilities (chi(M)) have been measured between 1.8 and 300 K. The chi(M) values of salts 5 and 7 can be well reproduced by the sum of the contributions from (i). a Curie-Weiss system with a Curie constant of 0.376 (K emu)/mol and negative Weiss constants (THETAV;) of -0.4 and -1.7 K and (ii). a dimer system with strong negative exchange interactions of 2J/k(B) = -354 and -258 K, respectively. The dimer formations in Ni(dmit)(2) anions have been ascertained by the crystal structure analyses of salts 4-6. In salts 4 and 6, Ni(dmit)(2) dimer molecules are sandwiched between two verdazyl cations, indicating the formation of a linear tetramer in 4 and 6. The magnetic susceptibility data for salts 4 and 6 have been fitted to a linear tetramer model using an end exchange interaction of 2J(1)/k(B) = -600 K and a central interaction of 2J(2)/k(B) = -280 K for 4 and 2J(1)/k(B) = -30 K and 2J(2)/k(B) = -580 K for 6, respectively. The results of the temperature dependence of the g(T) value in salts 4-6 obtained by ESR measurement also support the above analyses. The 1:1 salts 4-6 are insulators. On the other hand, the conductivity of the 1:3 salt 7 at 20 degrees C was sigma = 0.10 S cm(-)(1) with an activation energy E(A) = 0.099 eV, showing the semiconductor property. Salt 7 is a new molecular paramagnetic semiconductor.

Abstract
One of the fundamental points of interest on the Si(100) surface is how the spatial localization of electron density on the buckled silicon dimer controls the site-specific reaction toward different Lewis acid and Lewis base molecules. We have investigated the adsorption of trimethylamine (TMA) on Si(100)c(4x2) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at 80 K. The adsorbed TMA appears as a triangle-shaped bright protrusion in the occupied-state STM image. The triangle-shaped protrusion is ascribed to three methyl groups in the adsorbed TMA. The center of the protrusion is located on the down atom site, which indicates that the adsorption of TMA occurs only on the down dimer atom. Thus, TMA adsorption on Si(100)c(4x2) is found to be purely site-specific on the down dimer atom and can be categorized in Lewis acid-base reaction.

Abstract
We investigated adsorbed states of CO on Pt(997) at 11 K using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. At 11 K, thermal migration is suppressed and thus the initial chemisorption at terrace sites and step sites is controlled by the transient mobility of the adsorbing molecule. The initial occupation ratio between atop CO on the terrace and atop CO at the step is directly determined to be 3.6:1. With a simple isotropic migration model, we estimated the mean lateral displacement from the first impact point to the initial chemisorption site to be 6.8 A. We also discuss the origin of transient mobility of CO on metal surfaces.

Five kinds of (1:1), (1:3), and (2:1) salts of 3-[4-(diethylmethylammonio)phenyl]-1,5-diphenyl-6-oxoverdazyl radical cation [V](+) with M(dmit)(2) anions (M = Ni, Zn, Pd, and Pt, dmit = 1,3-dithiol-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) ([V](+)[Ni(dmit)(2)](-) (1), [V](+)[Ni(dmit)(2)](3)(-) (2), [V](+)(2)[Zn(dmit)(2)](2-) (3), [V](+)(2)[Pd(dmit)(2)](2-) (4), and [V](+)(2)[Pt(dmit)(2)](2-) (5)) and an iodide salt of [V](+) ([V](+)[I](-) (6)) have been prepared, and the magnetic susceptibilities (chi(M) values) have been measured between 1.8 and 300 K. The chi(M) of the (1:1) Ni salt (1) can be well reproduced by the sum of the contributions from (i) a Curie-Weiss system with a Curie constant (C) of 0.376 K emu/mol and a negative Weiss constant (theta) of -1.5 K and (ii) the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic alternating chain system with 2J(A-B)/k(B) = -274 K (alternation parameter alpha = J(A-C)/J(A-B) = 0.2). The chi(M) of the (1:3) Ni salt (2) can be well explained by the two-term contributions from (i) the Curie-Weiss system with C = 0.376 K emu/mol and theta = -5.0 K and (ii) the dimer system with 2J/k(B) = -258 K. The magnetic properties of 1 and 2 were discussed based on the results obtained by crystal structure analysis and ESR measurements of 1 and 2. The chi(M) values of the (2:1) Zn, Pd, Pt salts 3, 4, and 5 and [V](+)[I](-) salt 6 follow the Curie-Weiss law with C = 0.723, 0.713, 0.712, and 0.342 K emu/mol and theta = -2.8, -3.1, -2.6, and +0.02 K, respectively, indicating that only the spins of the verdazyl radical cation contribute to the magnetic property of these salts. The salts 1, 3, and 5 are insulators. On the other hand, the conductivity (sigma) of the Ni salt 2 and Pd salt 4 at 20 degrees C was sigma = 8.9 x 10(-2) and 1.3 x 10(-4) S cm(-)(1) with an activation energy E(A) = 0.11 and 0.40 eV, respectively. The salts 2 and 4 are new molecular magnetic semiconductors.

Abstract
Accretion in white-dwarf binary systems can occur through discs, accretion columns or a combination of these, depending on the magnetic field of the white dwarf. Recent high-quality X-ray observations with the XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories have significantly advanced our understanding of the physics of the accretion process, and place severe tests on our existing models. There have been some surprises, such as the strong dependence of atmospheric heating on accretion rate. However, we believe that we are now confident that we understand in general the physical processes in the accretion region, although some complicating factors, such as absorption, remain. We also discuss new developments in ultra-short-period white-dwarf binary systems.

Abstract
We prepared a plasmid encoding 147 amino acid residues from the N terminus of c-erbB-2/HER2/neu (HER2), which included both a cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) epitope (HER2p63) and a helper epitope (HER2p1), using the mammalian expression vector pCAGGS-New (pCAGGS147HER2). In a parallel analysis with a Tetramer assay and CTL assay, good specificity and sensitivity of a quantitative enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assay to detect functional HER2p63-specific CD8(+) T cells were demonstrated after intramuscular immunization of pCAGGS147HER2. In an ELISPOT assay for HER2p63, spots of IFN gamma-producing cells were first detected 10 days after the first immunization, and additional immunizations increased the number of spots. HER2p63-specific CD8(+) T cells were detected over a period of more than 10 months after the last immunization. In hosts receiving more than three immunizations, surprisingly high numbers of specific CD8(+) T cells were persistently detectable. HER2 protein-specific antibodies of IgG class with dominance of IgG2a remain detectable 6 months after single or multiple immunizations. The antibodies however, were not reactive with cell surface HER2 antigens. Total suppression of tumor growth was observed when syngeneic HER2(+) tumor cells (2 x 10(6)) were injected subcutaneously 14 days after a single immunization with pCAGGS147HER2. Furthermore, the number of pulmonary metastases decreased significantly when DNA vaccination was initiated on the day of, or 3 days after, intravenous injection (1 x 10(6) cells).

Abstract
Successful simultaneous operation for cardiac and lung disease was performed in a 71-year-old man with lung carcinoma and ischemic heart disease. Chest CT scan revealed a mass in the right lower lobe and absence of mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Coronary angiography revealed significant stenosis of the left anterior descending artery, circumflex artery and right coronary artery. We performed concomitant video-assisted right lower lobectomy with mediastinal lymph node dissection as a form of less invasive surgery and triple coronary artery bypass grafting under cardiopulmonary bypass. Curative surgery for lung carcinoma and complete revascularization for ischemic heart disease were completed. The postoperative course was uneventful.

Abstract
Recognition of altered self-antigens in tumor cells by lymphocytes forms the basis for antitumor immune responses. The effector cells in most experimental tumor systems are CD8(+) T cells that recognize MHC class I binding peptides derived from molecules with altered expression in tumor cells. Although the need for CD4(+) helper T cells in regulating CD8(+) T cells has been documented, their target epitopes and functional impact in antitumor responses remain unclear. We examined whether broadly expressed wild-type molecules in murine tumor cells eliciting humoral immunity contributed to the generation of CD8(+) T cells and protective antitumor immune responses to unrelated tumor-specific antigens [mutated ERK2 (mERK2) and c-erbB2/HER/neu (HER2)]. The immunogenic wild-type molecules, presumably dependent on recognition by CD4(+) helper T cells, were defined by serological analysis of recombinant cDNA expression libraries (SEREX) using tumor-derived lambda phage libraries screened with IgG antibodies of hosts bearing transplanted 3-methylchoranthrene-induced tumors. Coimmunization of mice with plasmids encoding SEREX-defined murine wild-type molecules and mERK2 or HER2 led to a profound increase in CD8(+) T cells specific for mERK2 or HER2 peptides. This heightened response depended on CD4(+) T cells and copresentation of SEREX-defined molecules and CD8(+) T cell epitopes. In tumor protection assays, immunization with SEREX-defined wild-type molecules and mERK2 resulted in an inhibition of pulmonary metastasis, which was not achieved by immunization with mERK2 alone.

Abstract
To evaluate the correlation between the degree of basement membrane (BM) preservation and clinicopathological characteristics in the replacement-growth type (lepidic growth type) of small peripheral adenocarcinomas of the lung, the BM components of 72 surgically resected replacement-growth type adenocarcinomas of the lung, 2 cm or less in diameter, were evaluated immunohistochemically by using a monoclonal antibody to Type IV collagen and polyclonal antibodies to 7S collagen and laminin. The tumors were classified into the following three distinctive histological types according to the condition of the elastic framework: Type I, bronchioloalveolar carcinoma without fibrotic foci; Type II, sclerosing bronchioloalveolar carcinoma without elastic framework destruction; and Type III, sclerosing bronchioloalveolar carcinoma with elastic framework destruction. The BM was well preserved in the area of bronchioloalveolar spread along fully expanded alveoli in all tumor types; however, BM preservation was significantly lost in the areas of collapsed alveoli in Type III tumors. There were no BM component staining reactions in the scarred regions of Type III tumors. In addition, lymph node metastasis was significantly greater in Type III tumors and BM-destroyed tumors. We concluded that the BM was largely destroyed by tumor cell invasion in the scarred region of Type III adenocarcinomas. Type III tumors had discontinuous BMs in the area of collapsed alveoli, indicating that this BM-destructive pattern must be the first step in tumor invasion. Type I and II tumors were concluded to be noninvasive adenocarcinomas, because their BM components were well preserved and they had a good outcome.
