Abstract
2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant in the environment. The developmental period is more sensitive to TCDD and there is a possibility that maternal exposure to TCDD may affect in adulthood. Adult female Wistar rats were exposed to 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 µg/kg TCDD during the critical stage of organogenesis, that is, on GD15. The results revealed a significant decrease in indices of reproductive organ weight in adult male rats exposed to prenatal TCDD, and dose-dependent reduction in epididymal sperm reserves, percent motile, and viable sperm with an increase in percent morphological abnormal sperm. Polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed downregulated expression levels of steroidogenic markers such as steroidogenic acute regulatory, cholesterol side-chain cleavage, and 3β- and 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSDs) in experimental rats. Immunofluorescence sections portrayed reduced distribution of 3β- and 17β-HSD proteins in testes of experimental rats. Furthermore, spermatogenic markers (acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, and sorbitol dehydrogenase) were significantly altered in the testes. Serum levels of testosterone, follicle stimulating hormones, and luteinizing hormone were significantly decreased. Testicular levels of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation were significantly elevated with a decline in superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase activities, and total thiol levels. Moreover, histological and morphometric examination of testicular cross-sections depicted degenerative changes. Male fertility assessment in adult rats revealed a significant decrease in mating index, fertility index, and mean number of pre- and postimplantations with an increase in pre- and postimplantation losses in rats cohabited with in utero TCDD-exposed adult males. In conclusion, the findings of this study provided clear evidence that maternal exposure to TCDD during the critical stage of development results in suppressed reproductive health in adulthood.

Abstract
A green, biomimetic, phosphate-mediated Pictet-Spengler reaction was used in the synthesis of three catecholic tetrahydroisoquinolines, 1, 2, and 12, present in the medicinal plant Portulaca oleracea, as well as their analogues 3-11, 13, and 14, with dopamine hydrochloride and aldehydes as the substrates. AB-8 macroporous resin column chromatography was applied for purification of the products from the one-step high-efficacy synthesis. It eliminated the difficulties in the isolation of catecholic tetrahydroisoquinolines from the aqueous reaction system and unreacted dopamine hydrochloride. Activity screening in CHO-K1/Gα15 cell models consistently expressing α1B-, β1-, or β2-adrenergic receptors indicated that 12 and 2, compounds that are present in P. oleracea, possessed the most potent β2-adrenergic receptor agonist activity and 2 was a selective β2-adrenergic receptor agonist at the concentration of 100 μM. Both 12 and 2 exhibited dose-dependent bronchodilator effects on the histamine-induced contraction of isolated guinea-pig tracheal smooth muscle, with EC50 values of 0.8 and 2.8 μM, respectively. These findings explain the scientific rationale of P. oleracea use as an antiasthmatic herb in folk medicine and provide the basis for the discovery of novel antiasthma drugs.

Abstract
Influenza has frequently been epidemic in recent years. However, the mechanisms of severe pneumonia with postinfluenza Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) secondary infection have not been fully understood. In this study, we explored the mechanisms of pneumonia in postinfluenza A virus (IAV) infection via a mouse model. Mice were intranasally inoculated with SP three days after IAV inoculation. We then collected samples at three time points to dynamically observe the pathological progression. In IAV infection alone, lymphocyte infiltration and widened alveolar intervals were observed. In the blood, levels of the CD19+, CD19+CD21+ and CD19+CD79β+B lymphocyte subpopulations were reduced, and IFN-γ and IL-10 were elevated. Slight atrophy was seen in the spleen, which was due to splenic B lymphocyteinitiated apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway. When SP infection occurred after IAV infection, the pulmonary inflammation was significantly aggravated; a fair number of lymphocytes and neutrophils infiltrated simultaneously with exfoliated bronchial epithelial cells, vascular endothelial cells, widened alveolar septum and hemorrhaging. Increasing edema fluid and bacteria accumulated in the alveolar cavity. Decreased CD19+, CD19+CD21+ and CD19+CD79β+B lymphocyte subpopulations and increased interferon gamma (IFN-γ) or interleukin 10 (IL-10) were more prominent compared to those with viral infection alone. Spleen atrophy resulting from coinfection was more obvious because of massive splenic B lymphocyte apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway compared to viral infection alone. This study shows that although inflammation caused by SP infection alone was temporary, preceding IAV infection provided favorable conditions for SP colonization and multiplication by destroying lung structure and suppressing humoral immunity. Synergistic IAV-SP coinfection is likely to facilitate more SP colonization and promote B lymphocyte-suppression and reduction. Eventually, the pneumonia worsened.

Abstract
E-textiles are gaining growing popularity recently due to low cost, light weight, and conformable compatibility with clothes in wearable and portable smart electronics. Here, an easy-handing, low cost, and scalable fabricating strategy is reported to fabricate conductive, highly flexible, and mechanically stretchable/twisted fiber gas sensor with great wearability and knittability. The proposed gas sensor is built using commercially available cotton/elastic threads as flexible/stretchable templates and reduced graphene oxide/mesoporous zinc oxide nanosheets as sensing layers to form conducting fibers. The as-prepared fiber demonstrates sensitive sensing response, excellent long-term stability (84 days), low theoretical detection limit (43.5 ppb NO2), great mechanical deformation tolerance (3000 bending cycles, 1000 twisting cycles and 65% strain strength), and washing durability in room-temperature gas detection. More significantly, scalable wearable characteristics including repairability, reliability, stability, and practicability have been efficiently improved, which are achieved by knotting the fractured fibers, incorporating multiple sensors in series/parallel and weaving multisensor array networks integrated into clothes. The good sensing properties, superior flexibility, and scalable applications of wearable fibers may provide a broad window for widespread monitoring of numerous human activities in personal mobile electronics and human-machine interactions.

Abstract
Two advanced lines (BAd7-209 and BAd7-213) with identical high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit composition were obtained via wide hybridization between low-gluten cultivar chuannong16 (CN16) and wild emmer D97 (D97). BAd7-209 was better than BAd7-213, and both of them were much better than CN16 in a dough quality test. We found that BAd7-209 had more abundant and higher expression levels of low-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (LMW-GS) proteins than those of BAd7-213. Twenty-nine novel LMW-GS genes at Glu-A3 locus were isolated from BAd7-209, BAd7-213 and their parents. We found that all 29 LMW-GS genes possessed the same primary structure shared by other known LMW-GSs. Twenty-seven genes encode LMW-m-type subunits, and two encode LMW-i-type subunits. BAd7-209 had a higher number of LMW-GS genes than BAd7-213, CN16, and D97. Two wild emmer genes MG574329 and MG574330 were present in the two advanced lines. Most of the LMW-m-type genes showed minor nucleotide variations between wide hybrids and their parents that could be induced through the wide hybridization process. Our results demonstrated that the wild emmer LMW-GS alleles could be feasibly transferred and integrated into common wheat background via wide hybridization and the potential value of the wild emmer LMW-GS alleles in breeding programs designed to improve wheat flour quality.

Abstract
Room-temperature NO2 gas sensors are fabricated by employing tin oxide (SnO2) nanofibers (NFs) as sensing layers and low-dimension carbon nanomaterials, including single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), as conductive interdigital electrodes (IDEs). The morphology characteristics and gas sensing performance of rGO IDEs-SnO2 and SWCNTs IDEs-SnO2 gas sensors have been investigated. The results demonstrate that the response of rGO IDEs based sensors achieves 90.0% after been exposed to 12 ppm NO2, which is superior to the responses of Ti/Au and SWCNTs IDEs based sensors (55.1% and 16.7%, respectively). The rGO IDEs-SnO2 sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity, large recovery capability and repeatability, and high selectivity at room temperature. The sensing mechanism of such prominent performance has also been analyzed, revealing that the outstanding properties could be attributed to a large number of active adsorption sites, the formation of a p-n heterojunction and a large effective contact area between the two-dimensional rGO nanosheets and the tube-shaped SnO2 NFs. This work helps to build up a potential platform to explore effective electrodes for future novel NO2 gas sensors in practical gas sensing applications.

Abstract
Cucurbitacin B (CuB) isolated from Cucumis melo by using a PC12 cell bioassay system exhibited significant nerve growth factor (NGF)‐mimic or NGF‐enhancing activity in PC12 and primary neuron cells. It was also demonstrated pro‐neurogenesis effects in ICR and APP/PS1 mice and improved memory deficit of APP/PS1 mice. Its possible mechanism includes significant induction of the phosphorylation of glucocorticoid receptor (GR), protein kinase C (PKC), phospholipase C (PLC) and inhibition of cofilin. ChemProteoBase profiling, binding assay and cellular thermal shift assay (CETSA) were used to determine the target protein. Results revealed that CuB could affect actin dynamics as an actin inhibitor but did not bind with GR. The protein level of cofilin in PC12 cells after treating 0.3 μM and different temperatures was significantly higher than that of control group. Other neurotrophic signalling pathways, such as TrkA/TrkB, were analysed with specific inhibitors and Western blot. The inhibitors of TrkA, PLC, PKC, Ras, Raf and ERK1/2 significantly decreased the percentage of PC12 cells with neurite outgrowth and shortened the length of neurite outgrowth induced by CuB. CuB significantly induced the phosphorylation of TrkA, ERK and CREB. The phosphorylation of these proteins was obviously decreased by their specific inhibitors. These results suggest that cofilin is a candidate target protein of CuB in PC12 cells and that the GR/PLC/PKC and TrkA/Ras/Raf/ERK signalling pathways play important roles in the neuroprotective effect of CuB.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the correlation between endogenous EPO levels and electrocardiogram scatter plot changes in patients with coronary heart disease and autonomic nerve function injury. Methods: Forty-eight patients who underwent coronary arteriography (CAG) inspection due to chronic coronary heart diseases were selected from July 2015 to October 2015. All of them were evaluated by the Ewing standard autonomic nervous function test, and were divided into Ewing(+) group and Ewing(-) group according to the results of the test. The clinical data of the patients was collected and venous blood was extracted to detect EPO level. Results: The EPO level of Ewing (+) group ((13±3) mIU/ml) was significantly higher than that of Ewing (-) group ((10±3) mIU/ml). The Lorenz scatter plot comet shapes between the two groups had a significant difference. As for the quantitative indicators of Lorenz scatterplot, length of the Ewing (+) group ((147±22) ms) was shorter than that of the Ewing (-) group ((164±24) ms) and there was no significant differences in the width between the two groups. EPO level was negatively correlated with length in both groups (r=-0.427, P=0.002), but not with width (r=0.091, P=0.539). Binary logistic regression analysis showed that EPO (OR=1.394) and diastolic blood pressure (OR=1.091) were risk factors for autonomic nervous function damage. Length (OR=0.934) was a protective factor for autonomic nervous function. ROC curve analysis showed that the area under the EPO curve was 0.737 and that under the length curve was 0.719. Conclusions: The endogenous EPO levels are associated with the changes of electrocardiogram scatter plot in patients with coronary heart disease and autonomic nerve function injury. EPO and length of scatter plot have the similar diagnostic value on predicting of autonomic nerve function injury.

Abstract
The nontoxicity and low cost make LiMn2O4 a competitive cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. LiMn2O4 has a high theoretical capacity (296 mAh g-1) when cycled in the 3 and 4 V regions. However, it displays a low practical capacity (∼120 mAh g-1) because of the unavailability of the 3 V region caused by severe Jahn-Teller distortion. The present work investigated the full utilization of LiMn2O4 in both 3 and 4 V by tuning the nanoscale interfacial properties. Li-rich structures at the surface and interface of the spinel material and nanograin strain were introduced to improve the performances and were achieved by grinding LiMn2O4 and Li2O at 700 rpm for 10 h under an argon atmosphere. The product shows a high initial discharge capacity of 287.9 mAh g-1 at 0.05 C between 1.2 and 4.6 V and retains 83.2% of the capacity after 50 cycles. The nanoscale interfacial structure was clarified by spherical aberration-corrected microscopy and XRD refinement, and complex occupancies of Li and Mn were found at the interface. A correlation between the interfacial properties and electrochemical performance was established, and the improved performance could be attributed to the polycrystalline nature of the material, the unique Li-rich interfacial structure, and the slightly elevated valence state of Mn. The present results may provide insight for further evaluating the complex mechanism of controlling the electrochemical performance of LiMn2O4.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE BNIP1, a member of the BH3-only protein family, plays essential roles in a variety of biological processes. However, the mechanism and function of BNIP1 are still unknown in cervical cancer. We aim to explore the roles of BNIP1 on cervical cancer cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion abilities by mTOR signaling pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS qRT-PCR and Western blot assays were performed to assess BNIP, mTOR, and p70S6K1 expressions. CCK-8, transwell and flow cytometry assays were used to measure the representative proliferation, migration, invasion, and apoptosis abilities. RESULTS Our findings indicated that BNIP1 is down-expressed in cervical cancer tissues and cells, and was negatively associated with lymphatic metastasis. Overexpression of BNIP1 suppressed proliferation, migration and invasion, and promoted apoptosis of cervical cancer cells. Silence of BNIP1 by siRNAs accelerated proliferation, migration and invasion, and inhibited apoptosis of cervical cancer cells. In addition, we found that BNIP1 significantly inhibited mTOR, p70S6K1, and p-p70S6K1 expressions; BNIP1 affected the proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion abilities of cervical cancer cells by regulating mTOR expression. CONCLUSIONS BNIP1 can be considered a marker for cervical carcinoma therapy.

Abstract
Grain protein content (GPC) and yield are of two important traits in wheat, but their negative correlation has hampered their simultaneous improvement in conventional breeding. Wild emmer wheat (Triticum turgidum ssp. dicoccoides) is an important genetic resource for wheat quality improvement. In this study, we report a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using 13116 DArT-seq markers to characterize GPC in 161 wheat lines derived from wild emmer. Using a general linear model, we identified 141 markers that were significantly associated with GPC, and grouped into 48 QTL regions. Using both general linear model and mixed linear model, we identified four significant markers that were grouped into two novel QTL regions on chromosomes 2BS (QGpc.cd1-2B.1) and 7BL (QGpc.cd1-7B.2). The two QTLs have no negative effects on thousand kernel weight (TKW) and should be useful for simultaneous improvement of GPC and TKW in wheat breeding. Searches of public databases revealed 61 putative candidate/flanking genes related to GPC. The putative proteins of interest were grouped in four main categories: enzymes, kinase proteins, metal transport-related proteins, and disease resistance proteins. The linked markers and associated candidate genes provide essential information for cloning genes related to high GPC and performing marker-assisted breeding in wheat.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE Rhizome of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Abbreviated as LC) is a frequently prescribed component in plenty of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas which are used to treat diabetic nephropathy (DN). The aims of the present study are to investigate the protective effect of the ethanol extract of LC rhizome (EEL) against DN in vivo, evaluate its potential mechanism, and find the evidence supporting its enthopharmacological use as an anti-DN agent. MATERIALS AND METHODS Hepa 1c1c7 murine hepatoma cells, human breast carcinoma MDA-MB-231 cells, human renal glomerular endothelial cells (HRGEC), and RAW 264.7 murine macrophages were adopted to test the effects of EEL and its active constituents on inhibitions of oxidative stress and inflammation in vitro. A streptozotocin (STZ) -induced DN C57BL/6 mice model was established and used to investigate the preventive effect of EEL against DN in vivo. RESULTS EEL demonstrated potential inhibitory effects against oxidative stress and inflammation in vitro. Using a STZ-induced DN mice model, it has been found that EEL treatment significantly prevented STZ-induced increases of urine production, urinary albumin excretion (UAE) and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), and markedly attenuated STZ-induced renal damages (e.g. glomerulosclerosis and fibrosis). The predominant bioactive constituents, Z-ligustilide (LGT), ferulic acid (FA), and tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), were inhibitors of oxidative stress and inflammation through acting with Nrf2 and NF-κB pathways. CONCLUSIONS EEL attenuates structural and functional damages of kidney in STZ-induced DN model in vivo, which might be related to the functions of EEL on inhibitions of oxidative stress and inflammation. These finding definitely supports the ethnopharmacological use of LC as an anti-DN agent.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate a novel apical U-shape splitting technique for horizontal bone augmentation in undercut areas and to compare its efficacy with that of guided bone regeneration (GBR). This was a prospective non-randomized controlled clinical trial. A total of 36 patients, who presented with a labial undercut that was not able to house a normally inclined implant, underwent the new technique or GBR. Radiographic and clinical data were obtained preoperatively, immediately after surgery, and 12 months after surgery. Pairwise comparisons of changes in ridge width gain, marginal bone loss, and pink aesthetic score were performed; correlations with pristine ridge morphology were investigated. The results showed similar marginal bone loss in the two groups. The overall ridge width gains in the new technique group (2.56±1.92mm) and GBR group (0.73±1.21mm) differed significantly (P<0.05). The pink aesthetic score was higher for the new technique group (11.75±1.22) than for the GBR group (9.25±1.86) (P<0.01). The morphology of the concavity had different impacts on regeneration in the two groups. The apical U-shape splitting technique, as a safe and effective alternative to GBR, provided a significant increase in bone volume gain where labial fenestration was inevitable during implant placement.

Abstract
Cdc42, a Rho family small GTPase, regulates cytoskeleton organization, vesicle trafficking, and other cellular processes in development and homeostasis. However, Cdc42's roles in prenatal tooth development remain elusive. Here, we investigated Cdc42 functions in mouse enamel organ. Cdc42 showed highly dynamic temporospatial patterns in the developing enamel organ, with robust expression in the outer enamel epithelium, stellate reticulum (SR), and stratum intermedium layers. Strikingly, epithelium-specific Cdc42 deletion resulted in cystic lesions in the enamel organ. Cystic lesions were first noted at embryonic day 15.5 and progressively enlarged during gestation. At birth, cystic lesions occupied the bulk of the entire enamel organ, with intracystic erythrocyte accumulation. Ameloblast differentiation was retarded upon epithelial Cdc42 deletion. Apoptosis occurred in the Cdc42 mutant enamel organ prior to and synchronously with cystogenesis. Transmission electron microscopy examination showed disrupted actin assemblies, aberrant desmosomes, and significantly fewer cell junctions in the SR cells of Cdc42 mutants than littermate controls. Autophagosomes were present in the SR cells of Cdc42 mutants relative to the virtual absence of autophagosome in the SR cells of littermate controls. Epithelium-specific Cdc42 deletion attenuated Wnt/β-catenin and Shh signaling in dental epithelium and induced aberrant Sox2 expression in the secondary enamel knot. These findings suggest that excessive cell death and disrupted cell-cell connections may be among multiple factors responsible for the observed cystic lesions in Cdc42 mutant enamel organs. Taken together, Cdc42 exerts multidimensional and pivotal roles in enamel organ development and is particularly required for cell survival and tooth morphogenesis.

Abstract
Flexible chemical sensors usually require transfer of prepared layers or whole device onto special flexible substrates and further attachment to target objects, limiting the practical applications. Herein, a sprayed gas sensor array utilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-all-carbon hybrid nanostructures is introduced to enable direct device preparation on various target objects. The fully flexible device is formed using metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes as conductive electrodes and AgNPs-decorated reduced graphene oxide as sensing layers. The sensor presents sensitive response ( Ra/ Rg) of 6.0-20 ppm NO2, great mechanical robustness (3000 bending cycles), and obvious sensing ability as low as 0.2 ppm NO2 at room temperature. The sensitivity is about 3.3 and 13 times as that of the sample based on metal electrodes and the sample without AgNP decoration. The fabrication method demonstrates good scalability and suitability on the planar and nonplanar supports. The devices attached on a lab coat or the human body perform stable performance, indicating practicability in wearable and portable fields. The flexible and scalable sensor provides a new choice for real-time monitoring of toxic gases in personal mobile electronics and human-machine interactions.
