Abstract
Metal-oxide-semiconductor structures with NiSi2 and CoSi2 nanocrystals embedded in the SiO2 layer have been fabricated. A pronounced capacitance-voltage hysteresis was observed with a memory window about 1 V under low programming voltage. The retention characteristic can be improved by using HfO2 layer as control oxide. The processing of the structure is compatible with the current manufacturing technology of semiconductor industry.

Abstract
CD226 is one of the main activating receptors on natural killer cells, and it can induce cytotoxicity to target cells through interaction with its ligands CD155 or CD112. CD226 is also involved in T cell differentiation, activation, and cytotoxicity. The expression of CD226 on natural killer cells and T cells can be regulated by cytokines and chemical stimuli; however, the mechanism of the regulation of the CD226 gene is still unknown. In this study, we have identified two promoters in the human CD226 gene named P1 and P2, which are located at -810 to -287 bp and +33 to +213 bp, respectively, and a negative regulation element between P1 and P2. Both P1 and P2 can be regulated by phorbol ester (12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate) and calcium ionophore (A23187). Bioinformatics analysis shows that, within this CD226 gene region, there are putative binding sites for transcription factors AP-1, Sp1, PEA3, and Ets-1. We have found that transcription factor activating protein-1 (AP-1) can up-regulate CD226 promoters P1 and P2 in human hepatocarcinoma cells, a hepatocarcinoma cell line with low expression of endogenous AP-1 and Ets-1. Interestingly, the transcription factor Ets-1 promotes AP-1-induced P2 activity but inhibits AP-1-induced P1 activity for which a 10-bp AP-1/Ets-1 composite site (CCTTCCTTCC) in P1 may be responsible.

Abstract
Beta-carotene in vegetables and nutritional products is analyzed using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with liquid chromatography (LC) to improve the speed of analysis and to reduce the consumption of organic solvents. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of this analytical method for beta-carotene determinations in vegetables and nutritional products are approximately 10% and 5%, respectively. The amount of beta-carotene was found to vary from 0.35 +/- 0.05 ppm to 76.5 +/- 6.9 ppm for several vegetables in Taiwan. This method was linear over the range of 0.4-40 ppm with correlation coefficients higher than 0.997. The experimentally determined level of beta-carotene in nutritional products varied from 3.8 +/- 0.2 ppm to 24.6 +/- 1.1 ppm following SPME-LC. The recoveries of beta-carotene for these measurements following SPME were all higher than 97% +/- 2% (n = 3). The detection limits of beta-carotene for this method were from 0.027 to 0.054 ppm. Conventional solvent extractions take approximately 4-6 h for extraction and reconcentration but SPME takes approximately 1 h. From several tens to hundreds of milliliters, organic solvents can be saved using SPME. SPME provides better analyses on beta-carotene than conventional solvent extraction for nutritional products in terms of speed, precision, simplicity, and solvent consumption.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity in Taiwan and investigate the association between excess weight and physical fitness and blood pressure. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS A total of 13 935 children and adolescents aged 6-18 years (boys: 7031, girls: 6904) were involved in the 1999 survey and 24 586 (boys: 12 367, girls: 12 219) were available in the 2001 survey. MEASUREMENTS Weight, height, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and health-related fitness tests (bent-leg curl-ups, sit-and-reach test and step test) were measured. RESULTS The overall prevalence of obesity (including overweight) in boys was 19.8% in 1999 and 26.8% in 2001. It was lower in girls with 15.2% in 1999 and 16.5% in 2001. The normal weight group performed better (P<0.05) than the overweight/obese group in all fitness tests except in the 2001 sit-and-reach test where there were no differences between the two groups. The risk of hypertension increased nearly two times for the overweight/obese-fit group and nearly three times for the overweight/obese-unfit group compared to the normal weight-fit group (adjusted odds ratio (AOR)=1.93, 95%CI=1.514-2.451 and AOR=2.93, 95%CI=2.493-3.454, respectively). CONCLUSION Overall, the findings demonstrated that there is an increasing trend in overweight/obesity prevalence for Taiwanese youth even in a 2-year period. The overweight/obese youngsters tend to have poorer muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance than the normal weight group. The overweight/obese and unfit group had a greater risk of hypertension than other groups. However, this risk was significantly lower if obese/overweight children had a higher than average level of cardiovascular fitness.

Abstract
Continuous ethanol fermentation using very high gravity medium containing 280 g/L glucose, 5 g/L yeast extract and 3 g/L peptone was run at the dilute rates of 0.006 h(-1), 0.012 h(-1), 0.017 h(-1), 0.024 h(-1) and 0.032 h(-1) (based on the total working volume) in a combined bioreactor system composed of a stirred tank and three-stage tubular bioreactors in series. Oscillations marked by big fluctuations of residual glucose, ethanol and biomass were observed at the dilution rate of 0.012 h(-1). The Hopf Bifurcation theory was used to analyze and predict the occurring of these oscillations and the dilution rates that incited oscillations. Theoretical analysis revealed that oscillations can occur at designated specific growth rates and was validated by experimental results. The benefits of oscillations for the fermentation system were also discussed by comparing the fermentation results with those without oscillations.

Abstract
In this paper, an accurate and route method was developed to quantitative determine daidzein, genistein, glycitein, daidzin, glycitin, 6"-O-acetyldaidzin, 6"-O-acetylglycitin and 6"-O-acetylgenistin contents in selected high and low isoflavones in nutrition supplements by on line liquid chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation mass spectrometry (LC-APCI-MS). Improved extraction and hydrolysis methods of the isoflavones from three nutrition supplements were also studied and a rapid extraction method was developed. Comparison of different MS2 and MS3 spectra of isoflavones and some unknown compounds were also explored and proposed pathway fragments of nine isoflavones were first systematically suggested.

We report a unique case of congenital linear porokeratosis with exclusive facial involvement in a 27-year-old Chinese man. No other family member was affected. To our knowledge, this is the first report in the English literature of congenital linear porokeratosis confined to the face.

Abstract
Analytical Milli high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) was used for the selection and optimization of the two-phase solvent system to separate flavonoids from the extracts of the seeds of Oroxylum indicum. The optimum solvent system obtained from Milli-CCC was also the best solvent system for preparative HSCCC and led to the successful separation of two crude flavonoids from the seeds of O. indicum by Lab/Prep (laboratory preparative) HSCCC using different sized coils. Four flavonoids were isolated by preparative HSCCC: baicalein-7-O-diglucoside (25.0 mg, 92% purity), baicalein-7-o-glucoside (50.4 mg; 95% purity), baicalein (75 mg; purity 98%) and chrysin (100 mg; purity 98%).

Abstract
The network characteristic of a selection of diatomaceous silica derived from China has been investigated using Raman spectroscopy. Before any thermal treatment of the sample, two prominent bands of 607 and circa 493 cm(-1) are resolved in the Raman spectra of diatomaceous silica, corresponding to the (SiO)3-ring breathing mode of D2-line and the O3SiOH tetrahedral vibration mode of D1-line, respectively. This is more similar to the pyrogenic silica rather than the silica gel. For the latter, to obtain a (SiO)3-ring, the sample must be heated between 250 and 450 degrees C. Significant difference is also found between the diatomaceous silica and other natural silicas, e.g. in the Raman spectra of sedimentary and volcanic opals, neither D1 nor D2 band is detected in previous reports.

Abstract
Ti5Si4 has been identified to be the first nucleated phase in submonolayer Ti deposited on the Si(111)-7 x 7 surface by ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy in conjunction with atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The direct observation of the formation of clusters surrounded by the heavily damaged silicon lattice strongly suggested that Si is the dominant diffusing species in forming the silicide.

Abstract
A combined bioreactor system, composed of a stirred tank and a three-stage tubular bioreactor in series and with a total working volume of 3260 ml, was established. Continuous ethanol production was carried out using Saccharomyces cerevisiae and a very high gravity (VHG) medium containing 280 g l(-1) glucose. An average ethanol concentration of 124.6 g l(-1) or 15.8% (v) was produced when the bioreactor system was operated at a dilution rate of 0.012 h(-1). The yield of ethanol to glucose consumed was calculated to be 0.484 or 94.7% of its theoretical value of 0.511 when ethanol entrapped in the exhaust gas was incorporated. Meanwhile, quasi-steady states and non-steady oscillations were observed for residual glucose, ethanol and biomass concentrations for all of these bioreactors during their operations. Models that can be used to predict yeast cell lysis and viability loss were developed.

Abstract
Apparent growth of amorphous layers during low temperature annealing was observed in low energy Ge(+)-implanted (001)Si by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The occurrence of abnormal growth is due to the randomization of heavily damaged regions beneath the original amorphous/crystalline interfaces. The randomization process is attributed to the strain, incurred by the presence of a high density of large Ge atoms in the heavily damaged Si substrate, relaxation to lower the free energy of the systems. The randomization upon annealing may be fruitfully applied to minimize the transient enhanced diffusion in shallow junction formation.

Abstract
The quasi-steady-states, marked by small fluctuations of residual glucose, ethanol, and biomass concentrations, and sustainable oscillations marked by big fluctuations of these monitored fermentation parameters were observed during the continuous ethanol fermentation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae when very high gravity media were fed and correspondingly high ethanol concentrations reached. A high ethanol concentration was shown to be one of the main factors that incited these oscillations, although the residual glucose level affected the patterns of these oscillations to some extent. The lag response of S. cerevisiae to high ethanol stress that causes the shifts of morphology, viability loss, and death of yeast cells is assumed to be one of the probable mechanisms behind these oscillations. It was predicted that the longer the delay of this response was, the longer the oscillation periods would be, which was validated by the experimental data and the comparison with the oscillatory behaviors reported for the ethanologen bacterium, Zymomonas mobilis. Furthermore, three tubular bioreactors in series were arranged to follow a stirred tank bioreactor to attenuate these oscillations. However, exaggerated oscillations were observed for the residual glucose, ethanol, and biomass concentrations measured in the broth from these tubular bioreactors. After the tubular reactors were packed with Intalox ceramic saddle packing, these oscillations were effectively attenuated and quasi-steady-states were observed during which there were very small fluctuations of residual glucose, ethanol, and biomass within the entire experimental run.

Abstract
The structural evolution in amorphous silicon and germanium thin films has been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) in conjunction with autocorrelation function (ACF) analysis. The results established that the structure of as-deposited semiconductor films is of a high density of nanocrystallites embedded in the amorphous matrix. In addition, from ACF analysis, the structure of a-Ge is more ordered than that of a-Si. The density of embedded nanocrystallites in amorphous films was found to diminish with annealing temperature first, then to increase. The conclusions also corroborate well with the results of diminished medium-range order in annealed amorphous films determined previously by a variable coherence microscopy method.

Abstract
In recent years, emphasis in biomaterials engineering has moved from materials that remain stable in the biological environment to materials that can degrade in the human body. Biodegradable materials are designed to degrade gradually and be replaced eventually by newly formed tissue in the body. In this investigation, two particulate bioactive ceramics, i.e., hydroxyapatite (HA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP), were incorporated into polyhydroxybutyrate-polyhydroxyvalerate (PHB-PHV), which is a biodegradable copolymer. to produce new biomaterials for potential medical applications. All raw materials were commercially available and they were characterised prior to composite production. HA/PHB-PHV and TCP/PHB-PHV composites containiing up to 30 vol% of the bioceramics were produced through an established procedure. Compounded and compression moulded materials were evaluated using various techniques including thermogravimatric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis. The results showed that intended compositions of composites had been achieved and bioceramic particles were well distributed in the polymer. The degradation temperature of PHB-PHV was significantly reduced by the incorporation of bioceramics, while the melting temperature was slightly affected by the addition of bioceramics. The crystallinity of PHB-PHV was also varied with the presence of HA or TCP particles. The storage modulus and loss modulus of the composites increased with the increase in HA or TCP content. Composites containing the highest percentage of bioceramics exhibited the highest stiffness. Preliminary in vitro study indicated enhanced ability of the composites to induce the formation of bone-like apatite on their surfaces.

Abstract
Epitaxial ytterbium silicide thin films were grown on (111)Si by ultrahigh vacuum deposition and subsequent thermal annealing. The epitaxial YbSi(2-x) thin films consist of various kinds of defects such as vacancies, stacking faults, and pinholes. The vacancies were ordered so as to relax the compressive stress in Si sublattice of YbSi(2-x) thin films. The vacancy ordering structure is of an out-of-step structure with higher vacancy concentration after higher temperature annealing so that the compressive stress was further relaxed. A high density of stacking faults was present in the epitaxial YbSi(2-x) thin films. The stacking faults were annihilated by high temperature annealing. Pinholes also formed in the epitaxial YbSi(2-x) thin films and could be avoided by appropriate fabrication process. The epitaxial YbSi(2-x) thin films were thermally stable up to 1000 degrees C.

Abstract
High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) in conjunction with nano-beam (NB) analysis as well as energy dispersive spectrometry analysis have been fruitfully utilized to study the interfacial reactions in the metal-Si-Ge systems. In this paper we report the results of TEM study of the phase formation and growth in Ti-Si-Ge, Cu-Si-Ge and Ni-Si-Ge systems.

Abstract
The effects of stress on the formation of C54-TiSi2 phase in Ti/(001)Si samples have been investigated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with auto-correlation function (ACF) analysis. The C54-TiSi2 phase transformation temperature in tensily stressed samples was found to be lowered by about 100 degrees C than that in compressively stressed samples. The thickness of amorphous interlayers (a-interlayers) between Ti metal thin films and Si substrates was found to be thicker and thinner in the tensily and compressively stressed Si samples, respectively. Furthermore, the thicker a-interlayer was found to consist of a higher density of crystallites from the ACF analysis. With a higher density of crystallites in the a-interlayer, the grain size of C49-TiSi2 was reduced since more nucleation sites are available for the formation of C49-TiSi2. The small grain size of C49-TiSi2 in turn enhances the formation of C54-TiSi2. As a result, the phase transformation of C49- to C54-TiSi2 is enhanced by the tensile stress present in silicon substrates.

Abstract
AIMS Patients with poor quality echocardiograms impede the application of available automatic boundary detection technologies. Tissue harmonic imaging and contrast media can allow optimal differentiation of left ventricular blood pool and tissue, making it possible to utilize automatic boundary detection software for automatic non-operator-dependent computation of left ventricular volumes. We integrated contrast-enhanced harmonic colour Doppler with a semiautomated boundary detection algorithm to explore the feasibility, accuracy and inter-observer variability for left ventricular volume assessment in technically difficult patients. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-six patients with more than two segments not clearly visualized in tissue harmonic imaging were studied with contrast-enhanced harmonic colour Doppler using Levovist. Twenty patients (77%) achieved full left ventricular contrast filling without apparent blooming artefacts. Contrast-enhanced harmonic colour Doppler-automatic boundary detection was successfully implemented in these 20 patients, despite three (15%) in which it was not possible to acquire more than three cardiac cycles' values. Contrast-enhanced harmonic colour Doppler-automatic boundary detection measurements agreed closely with the manually drawn data. Among the three independent readers in the three techniques, the best correlation, lowest SEE, smallest limits of agreement and inter-observer variability were obtained in contrast-enhanced harmonic colour Doppler-automatic boundary detection. CONCLUSION Contrast-enhanced harmonic colour Doppler-automatic boundary detection was feasible and accurate in estimation of left ventricular volume and function in patients with poor acoustic windows. This technique significantly reduced inter-observer variability, thus improving reliability and confidence of investigators in left ventricular function assessment. Contrast-enhanced harmonic colour Doppler-automatic boundary detection may have great potential in clinical evaluation of left ventricular volume and function, especially when on-line software is available.

Abstract
(R)-(+)-Pulegone, a monoterpene ketone, is a major component of pennyroyal oil. Ingestion of high doses of pennyroyal oil has caused severe toxicity and occasionally death. Studies have shown that metabolites of pulegone were responsible for the toxicity. Previous metabolism studies have used high, near lethal doses and isolation and analysis techniques that may cause degradation of some metabolites. To clarify these issues and further explore the metabolic pathways, a study of (14)C-labeled pulegone in F344 rats at doses from 0.8 to 80 mg/kg has been conducted. High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of the collected urine showed the metabolism of pulegone to be extensive and complex. Fourteen metabolites were isolated by HPLC and characterized by NMR, UV, and mass spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that pulegone was metabolized by three major pathways: 1) hydroxylation to give monohydroxylated pulegones, followed by glucuronidation or further metabolism; 2) reduction of the carbon-carbon double bond to give diastereomeric menthone/isomenthone, followed by hydroxylation and glucuronidation; and 3) Michael addition of glutathione to pulegone, followed by further metabolism to give diastereomeric 8-(N-acetylcystein-S-yl)menthone/isomenthone. This 1,4-addition not only took place in vivo but also in vitro under catalysis of glutathione S-transferase or mild base. Several hydroxylated products of the two mercapturic acids were also observed. Contrary to the previous study, all but one of the major metabolites characterized in the present study are phase II metabolites, and most of the metabolites in free forms are structurally different from those previously identified phase I metabolites.

Abstract
Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder is characterized by the outgrowth of EBV-infected B cell lymphomas in immunosuppressed transplant recipients. Using a panel of EBV-infected spontaneous lymphoblastoid cell lines (SLCL) derived from post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder patients, we assessed the sensitivity of such lymphomas to Fas-mediated cell death. Treatment with either an agonist anti-Fas mAb or Fas ligand-expressing cells identifies two subsets of SLCL based on their sensitivity or resistance to Fas-driven apoptosis. Fas resistance in these cells cannot be attributed to reduced Fas expression or to mutations in the Fas molecule itself. In addition, all SLCL are sensitive to staurosporine-induced cell death, indicating that there is no global defect in apoptosis. Although all SLCL express comparable levels of Fas signaling molecules including Fas-associated death domain protein, caspase 8, and caspase 3, Fas-resistant SLCL exhibit a block in Fas-signaling before caspase 3 activation. In two SLCL, this block results in impaired assembly of the death-inducing signaling complex, resulting in reduced caspase 8 activation. In a third Fas-resistant SLCL, caspase 3 activation is hindered despite intact death-inducing signaling complex formation and caspase 8 activation. Whereas multiple mechanisms exist by which tumor cells can evade Fas-mediated apoptosis, these studies suggest that the proximal Fas-signaling pathway is impeded in Fas-resistant post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder-associated EBV(+) B cell lymphomas.

Abstract
For tissue regeneration and tissue engineering applications, a number of bioactive and biodegradable composites, either porous or non-porous, were fabricated. The newly developed materials included tricalcium phosphate reinforced polyhydroxybutyrate and its copolymer, poorly crystallized hydroxyapatite reinforced chitin, and plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite reinforced poly(L-lactic acid). It was shown that these new materials could be successfully produced using the manufacturing techniques adopted. In vitro experiments revealed that the incorporation of bioceramic particles in biodegradable polymers rendered the composites bioactive and significantly improved the ability of composites to induce the formation of bone-like apatite on their surfaces. Degradation of composite scaffolds in simulated body fluid was observed and could be due to the simultaneous degradation of polymer matrix and dissolution of bioceramic particles.
