Abstract
Animal manures generally contain high levels of heavy metals that may pose a significant threat to soil and groundwater qualities. Pyrolysis as means of reducing metal availability in such feed stocks is recently encouraged, but systematic studies are currently lacking. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of pyrolysis temperature on the availability of Cu and Zn by chemical extraction, to determine the speciation of Cu and Zn by synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy, and finally to investigate the phase distribution of metal species in the carbonaceous materials by combining acid-base extractions and absorption spectroscopy data. The results showed that both Cu and Zn in the swine manure were mainly bound to organic functional groups. Cu (II) reduction and Cu (I)-S complexes were observed during the pyrolysis process. Zn species resembling ZnAc2 was still dominant, being 60.8-69.2%, and ZnS increased by 6.6-21.8% in the carbonaceous materials. The distribution of Cu and Zn in the mineral, carbonized and non-carbonized organic phases varied greatly with the pyrolysis temperature. The higher the temperature, the more the metals existed in the mineral phase and carbonized organic phase. The decrease of EDTA extractable Cu and Zn with pyrolysis temperature was due to the increase of metals in the carbonized organic phase and mineral phase. It is suggested that pyrolysis at the relatively higher temperature is a better choice for metal-containing manure according to the metal speciation, solubility and availability.

Abstract
AIM Safety and survival were investigated in patients treated according to expanded surgical indications for colorectal hepatic metastases. METHOD A retrospective analysis of all consecutive patients who underwent resection of colorectal hepatic metastases at Zhongshan Hospital from 2000 to 2010 was conducted. The patients were divided into two groups based on a change in the surgical indications introduced in 2005. Patients in Group I underwent hepatic surgery between 2000 and 2004 and those in Group II between 2005 and 2010. The clinicopathological data and survival rates of both groups were analysed. RESULTS There were 530 patients who underwent hepatic surgery between 2000 and 2010. After the expansion of surgical indications, the rate of surgical resection rose from 25.1 to 35.1% (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in perioperative mortality (2.2% vs 0.9%) or morbidity (20.9% vs 29.8%). Recurrence occurred in 27.5% and 36.7% in Groups I and II, respectively, and 5-year overall survival was 43% and 49%, respectively (not significant). CONCLUSION Expanding the indications for surgical resection of hepatic metastases increased the resection rate but had no significant effect on survival.

Abstract
In a retrospective cohort study we compared the clinical outcome and complications, including dysphagia, following anterior cervical fusion for the treatment of cervical spondylosis using either a zero-profile (Zero-P; Synthes) implant or an anterior cervical plate and cage. A total of 83 patients underwent fusion using a Zero-P and 107 patients underwent fusion using a plate and cage. The mean follow-up was 18.6 months (sd 4.2) in the Zero-P group and 19.3 months (sd 4.1) in the plate and cage group. All patients in both groups had significant symptomatic and neurological improvement. There were no significant differences between the groups in the Neck Disability Index (NDI) and visual analogue scores at final follow-up. The cervical alignment improved in both groups. There was a higher incidence of dysphagia in the plate and cage group on the day after surgery and at two months post-operatively. All patients achieved fusion and no graft migration or nonunion was observed. When compared with the traditional anterior cervical plate and cage, the Zero-P implant is a safe and convenient procedure giving good results in patients with symptomatic cervical spondylosis with a reduced incidence of dysphagia post-operatively. Abstract
With the development of molecular identification, there has been a great deal of discussion about the feature of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments. Although longer fragments may minimize stochastic variation across taxa and be more likely to reflect broader patterns of nucleotide divergence, shorter fragments have many advantages, such as quick, easy and economical. Extensive application of long mtDNA segments for species identification cannot always be achieved as a result of constraints in time and money. In the present study, a molecular identification method involving the sequencing of a 272-bp 'barcode' fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene from 55 specimens, representing 7 Chinese sarcophagid species from varying populations, was evaluated. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequenced segments showed that all sarcophagid specimens were properly assigned into seven species, which indicated the possibility of separation congeneric species with the short fragments. The results of this research will be instrumental for the implementation of the Chinese Sarcophagidae database.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to define the roles of miR-181a in determining sensitivity of cervical cancer to radiation therapy, to explore the underlying mechanism and to evaluate the potential of miR-181a as a biomarker for predicting radio-sensitivity. Tumor specimens from 18 patients with a histological diagnosis of squamous cervical carcinoma (stage IIIB) were used in the micro-RNA profiling and comparison. These patients never received any chemotherapy before radiation therapy. Human cervical cancer cell lines, SiHa and Me180, were used in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (animal) studies. Transfection of tumor cells with the mimic or inhibitor of miR-181a, and reporter gene assay, were performed to investigate the role of miR-181a in determining radio-sensitivity and the target gene. Higher expression of miR-181a was observed in human cervical cancer specimens and cell lines that were insensitive to radiation therapy, as compared with sensitive cancer specimens and the cell lines. We also found that miR-181a negatively regulated the expression of PRKCD, a pro-apoptotic protein kinase, via targeting its 3'-untranslated region (UTR), thereby inhibiting irradiation-induced apoptosis and decreasing G2/M block. The role of miR-181a in conferring cellular resistance to radiation treatment was validated both in cell culture models and in mouse tumor xenograft models. The effect of miR-181a on radio-resistance was mediated through targeting the 3'-UTR of PRKCD gene. Thus, the expression level of miR-181a in cervical cancer may serve as a biomarker for sensitivity to radiation therapy, and targeting miR-181a may represent a new approach to sensitizing cervical cancer to radiation treatment.

Abstract
Targeting diseased cells is a challenging issue in both pharmacological and biological therapeutics. Gene therapy is emerging as a novel approach for treating rare diseases and for illnesses for which there is no other alternative. An important limitation of gene therapy has been the off-target effects and therefore efforts have been focused on increasing the specificity of gene transfer to the targeted organ. Here, we describe a promoter containing six nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) consensus sequences, which is as efficient as the cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoter to drive expression in vascular smooth muscle cells both in vitro and in vivo. In contrast to the CMV promoter it is activated in a Ca(2+)-dependent manner after endoplasmic reticulum depletion and allows the transgene expression only in proliferative/diseased cells. Overexpression of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) Ca(2+) ATPase 2a under the control of this NFAT promoter inhibits restenosis after angioplasty in rats. In conclusion, this promoter may be useful for gene therapy in vascular proliferative diseases and other diseases involving upregulation of the NFAT pathway.

Abstract
Our aim was to better understand and improve the accuracy of the preoperative diagnosis of intraspinal MM by a combined analysis of MR imaging and pathologic findings. All 5 patients had undergone unenhanced and contrast-enhanced MR imaging examinations. All tumor samples had immunohistochemical reactions to HMB-45, vimentin, S-100, EMA, and Leu-7 antibodies. All 5 cases were located in the intradural extramedullary compartment. Two cases had multifocal lesions, and 3 cases were solitary. Two cases showed homogeneously strong enhancement, and 3 cases showed moderate enhancement on contrast-enhanced T1WI. The tumor cells had positive reactions to HMB-45, vimentin, and S-100 antibodies. MR imaging plays an important role in the detection and diagnosis of intraspinal MM. Final diagnosis should be based on histopathology and IHC examinations.

Abstract
Graft injury after small-for-size liver transplantation impairs graft function and threatens the survival of the recipients. The use of adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) for liver injury protection and repair is promising. Our aim was to investigate the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) secreted by ADSCs in the treatment of small-for-size liver graft injury. Studies were performed using ADSCs with VEGF secretion blocked by RNA interference. In vitro, ADSCs prevented apoptosis of freshly isolated liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) by secretion of VEGF. Syngeneic 35% orthotopic liver transplantation followed by implantation of syngeneic ADSCs through the portal vein system was performed using Wistar rats. We found VEGF secreted by implanted ADSCs improved graft microcirculatory disturbances, serum liver function parameters and survival. The improved microcirculatory status was also reflected by reduced hepatocellular damage, especially LSEC apoptosis and improved liver regeneration. These effects were accompanied by decreased expression of endothelin receptor type A, increased Bcl-2/Bax ratio, decreased expression of Bad and elevated proportion of phosphorylated Bad. In conclusion, implanted syngeneic ADSCs attenuated small-for-size liver graft injuries and subsequently enhanced liver regeneration in a rat 35% liver transplantation model. The VEGF secreted by implanted ADSCs played a crucial role in this process.

Abstract
Bcl-2 E1B 19-KDa interacting protein 3 (BNIP3) is a mitochondrial death and mitophagy marker, which is involved in inducing cardiac remodeling post myocardial infarction. In this study, we show that BNIP3 expression increases in stressed cardiomyocytes in vitro and in response to pressure overload in vivo, and that its transcription is directly related to JNK activity. BNIP3 expression gradually increased in the first weeks after pressure overload and peaked at the heart failure stage. Ultrastructurally, the mitochondrial area was inversely proportional to BNIP3 expression. Both JNK and AKT activities increased with pressure overload; however, JNK signaling dominated over AKT signaling for the activation of the transcription factor FOXO3a and for the transcription of its effector, BNIP3. 3-methyladenine attenuated JNK signaling and significantly decreased BNIP3 expression and reversed cardiac remodeling in heart failure. Ultrastructurally, the mitochondrial area was significantly increased in the 3-methyladenine group compared with placebo. Moreover, adenoviral gene delivery of dominant negative JNK in a rat model of pressure overload hypertrophy abolished the increase in BNIP3 expression in response to pressure overload. These results suggest that JNK signaling is a critical modulator of the transcription factor FOXO3a driving the expression of its effector, BNIP3, in heart failure and that JNK, through BNIP3, induces mitochondrial apoptosis and mitophagy.

Abstract
The outer membrane cytochrome OmcA functions as a terminal metal reductase in the dissimilatory metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. The ten-heme centers shuttle electrons from the transmembrane donor complex to extracellular electron acceptors. Here, the crystallization and preliminary crystallographic analysis of OmcA are reported. Crystals of OmcA were grown by the sitting-drop vapor-diffusion method using PEG 20,000 as a precipitant. The OmcA crystals belonged to space group P2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 93.0, b = 246.0, c = 136.6 Å, α = 90, β = 97.8, γ = 90°. X-ray diffraction data were collected to a maximum resolution of 3.25 Å.

Abstract
Most patients with acute lymphocytic leukemia (all) are reported to have acquired chromosomal abnormalities in their leukemic bone marrow cells. Many established chromosome rearrangements have been described, and their associations with specific clinical, biologic, and prognostic features are well defined. However, approximately 30% of pediatric and 50% of adult patients with all do not have cytogenetic abnormalities of clinical significance. Despite significant improvements in outcome for pediatric all, therapy fails in approximately 25% of patients, and these failures often occur unpredictably in patients with a favorable prognosis and "good" cytogenetics at diagnosis.It is well known that karyotype analysis in hematologic malignancies, although genome-wide, is limited because of altered cell kinetics (mitotic rate), a propensity of leukemic blasts to undergo apoptosis in culture, overgrowth by normal cells, and chromosomes of poor quality in the abnormal clone. Array comparative genomic hybridization (acgh-"microarray") has a greatly increased genomic resolution over classical cytogenetics. Cytogenetic microarray, which uses genomic dna, is a powerful tool in the analysis of unbalanced chromosome rearrangements, such as copy number gains and losses, and it is the method of choice when the mitotic index is low and the quality of metaphases is suboptimal. The copy number profile obtained by microarray is often called a "molecular karyotype."In the present study, microarray was applied to 9 retrospective cases of pediatric all either with initial high-risk features or with at least 1 relapse. The conventional karyotype was compared to the "molecular karyotype" to assess abnormalities as interpreted by classical cytogenetics. Not only were previously undetected chromosome losses and gains identified by microarray, but several karyotypes interpreted by classical cytogenetics were shown to be discordant with the microarray results. The complementary use of microarray and conventional cytogenetics would allow for more sensitive, comprehensive, and accurate analysis of the underlying genetic profile, with concomitant improvement in prognosis and treatment, not only for pediatric all, but for neoplastic disorders in general.

Abstract
AbstractAlthough many publications have discussed focused ion beam (FIB) preparation of TEM samples, few have presented a detailed, step-by-step milling procedure. This is a summary of techniques that evolved over the past 3 years in our laboratory. In addition to describing more traditional mechanical pre-thinning techniques, we introduce a method to pre-thin samples down to thicknesses of the order of 20 μm within 1 hour using a wafer dicing saw. We then discuss different ways to handle mechanically difficult samples such as those prone to delaminate. Our approach to FIB milling is designed to minimize the effects of ion-beam spreading which is responsible for most of the failures to prepare good FIBTEM samples. The technique is presented in a step-by-step fashion including a simple yet reliable method to terminate FIB milling. Examples are shown to illustrate applications to different types of problems including - precision cross-sectioning of integrated circuit (IC) devices, cross-sectioning of samples prone to delamination, and cross-sectioning of specific defect sites. Finally, we discuss the effect of artifacts in the quality of TEM samples.

Abstract
171 Background: Preoperative definitive diagnosis of malignant obstructive jaundice caused by biliary and pancreatic carcinomas still remains a major challenge. Hypermethylation of tumor suppressor genes have been implied in carcinogenesis of biliary and pancreatic malignancies. The diagnostic values of methylation status of tumor suppressor genes in bile in malignant obstructive jaundice have not been well-documented. Methods: Bile was prospectively collected from 70 patients with obstructive jaundice treated at our hospital between November 2008 and Sepetember 2009. Forty-eight of them were proved to be malignant obstructive jaundice (biliary carcinoma in 36, pancreatic carcinoma in 8 and duodenal carcinoma in 4) by pathological examination, and 22 were benign obstructive jaundice caused by cholelithiasis. DNA was extracted from bile and modified by sodium bisulfite. Methylation-specific PCR was run to detect methylation status of P16 and APC gene promoters. Their diagnostic values in malignant obstructive jaundice were assessed. Results: Hypermethylation of P16 promoter was presented in 72.9% (35/48) malignant obstructive jaundice, and 9% (2/22) bengin obstructive jaundice (p<0.05). Hypermethylation of APC promoter was presented in 56.2% (27/48) malignant obstructive jaundice, and 9% (2/22) bengin obstructive jaundice (p<0.05). With respect to their diagnostic values in malignant obstructive jaundice, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictivity and negative predictivity were 72.9%, 90.9%, 94.6% and 60.6%, respectively, for P16 gene; 56.2%, 90.9%, 93.1%, 48.8%, respectively, for APC gene. Conclusions: Methylation status of P16 and APC gene promoters in bile was valuable in diagnosis of malignant obstructive jaundice, with an excellent specificity. P16 gene had a higher sensitivity than APC gene. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
During the fertilization process, complex events are involved in the fusion between the reacted spermatozoa and the mature oocyte. Fusion implies that many proteins are present on the cell membrane of the gametes. Recently, a new protein, Izumo, has been shown to play a role in the sperm–egg fusion. Izumo was identified through the generation of a monoclonal antibody that inhibits this fusion. This protein belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily type I transmembrane protein. Izumo can be detected only after acrosome reaction at the spermatozoal surface. The cashmere goat Izumo gene was identified and cloned by 3′ and 5′ rapid amplification of cDNA ends-PCR. The expression of cashmere goat Izumo was examined by RT-PCR and Northern blotting. The full-length cDNA of cashmere goat Izumo contains 1536 bp and an open reading frame of 1035 bp, encoding a polypeptide of 344 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 38.76 kDa and a theoretical isoelectric point of 8.18. This predicted amino acid sequence showed 89.82% amino acid identity with the bovine Izumo. The deduced amino acid sequence contained 3 conserved domains of the signal peptide, immunoglobulin-like domain, and transmembrane region. Reverse transcription-PCR and Northern blotting analysis showed that cashmere goat Izumo transcripts were highly expressed in the testis, caput, corpus, cauda epididymis. Cashmere goat Izumo may play a role in the biological process of fertilization.

Abstract
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are potent in immunomodulation. It has been proven that MSC functioned to correct immune disorder in several immune diseases. Here, we tested the hypothesis that MSC from human bone marrow (hMSC) can provide a potential therapy for experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis (EAMG). EAMG mice model was established by subcutaneous injection of synthetic analogue of acetylcholine receptor (AchR), then, hMSC were intravenously delivered into these mice repeatedly. The results showed that hMSC could specifically home to spleen tissue and hMSC treatment significantly improved the functional deficits of EAMG mice. In addition, AchR antibody level was dramatically decreased in cell-treated group when compared with untreated control on 10 days after the second cell injection. Moreover, both in vivo and in vitro mixed lymphocyte proliferation assays revealed that hMSC could definitely inhibit the proliferation of AchR-specific lymphocyte. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that hMSC treatment was therapeutically useful in autoimmune myasthenia gravis mice, and the underlying mechanism may relate with their immunomodulatory potential.

Abstract
The mechanical properties and electronic structure of alpha- and beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) crystals are studied by using two ab initio density functional methods, the Vienna Ab initio Simulation Package (VASP) and the orthogonalized linear combination of atomic orbitals method. Based on the VASP optimized crystal structures, the elastic constants of alpha- and beta-TCP are obtained using an effective stress-strain computational scheme. From the calculated elastic constants, the bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus and Poisson's ratios are obtained. The results show that the mechanical properties of the two crystals are comparable and that alpha-TCP is somewhat softer than beta-TCP. Comparison with experimental extrapolations of the elastic constants shows significant differences, which attest to the difficulty of obtaining single crystal samples. The calculated electronic structure results show that both crystals are large gap insulators with a direct band gap of 4.89 eV for alpha-TCP and 5.25 eV for beta-TCP. Effective charge calculations show that, on average, beta-TCP has slightly less charge transfer per Ca than alpha-TCP. The (010) ((001)) surface model for alpha-TCP (beta-TCP) is studied using a supercell slab geometry and fully relaxed to obtain the optimized structures. The estimated surface formation energies are 0.777 and 0.842 J m(-2) for alpha-TCP and beta-TCP, respectively. The electronic structures of the two surface models are compared with the bulk models. Charge density analysis shows that the surfaces of both TCP crystals are positively charged overall owing to the presence of Ca ions near the surfaces.

Abstract
The outer membrane protein OmcA is an 85 kDa decaheme c-type cytochrome located on the surface of the dissimilatory metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. It is assumed to mediate shuttling of electrons to extracellular acceptors that include solid metal oxides such as hematite (alpha-Fe(2)O(3)). No information is yet available concerning OmcA structure in physiologically relevant conditions such as aqueous environments. We purified OmcA and characterized its solution structure by small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), and its interaction at the hematite-water interface by neutron reflectometry. SAXS showed that OmcA is a monomer that adopts a flat ellipsoidal shape with an overall dimension of 34 x 90 x 65 A(3). To our knowledge, we obtained the first direct evidence that OmcA undergoes a redox state-dependent conformational change in solution whereby reduction decreases the overall length of OmcA by approximately 7 A (the maximum dimension was 96 A for oxidized OmcA, and 89 A for NADH and dithionite-reduced OmcA). OmcA was also found to physically interact with electron shuttle molecules such as flavin mononucleotide, resulting in the formation of high-molecular-weight assemblies. Neutron reflectometry showed that OmcA forms a well-defined monomolecular layer on hematite surfaces, where it assumes an orientation that maximizes its contact area with the mineral surface. These novel insights into the molecular structure of OmcA in solution, and its interaction with insoluble hematite and small organic ligands, demonstrate the fundamental structural bases underlying OmcA's role in mediating redox processes.

Abstract
Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1A (CDKN1A), also known as p21Cip1/Waf1, is a master downstream effector of tumor suppressors. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate through a high-throughput luciferase reporter screen that p21Cip1/Waf1 can be directly targeted by nearly 28 microRNAs (miRNAs). The results were further confirmed by a series of mutational analyses and luciferase reporter assays. These 28 miRNAs can substantially inhibit p21Cip1/Waf1 expression, predominantly at translational level. Many of these miRNAs were upregulated in cancers and might serve as modulators of oncogenesis. Furthermore, 8 of these 28 p21-regulating miRNAs are located in the chromosome 19 miRNA cluster, the largest miRNA gene cluster in humans, and they can clearly promote cell proliferation and cell-cycle progression in choriocarcinoma cells. In conclusion, our screening strategy provides an alternative approach to uncovering miRNA modulators of an individual mRNA, and it has identified multiple miRNAs that can suppress p21Cip1/Waf1 expression by directly targeting its 3' untranslated region.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Little is known about in-hospital care for hemorrhagic stroke. We examined quality of care in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) admissions in the national Get With The Guidelines-Stroke (GWTG-Stroke) database, and compared them to ischemic stroke (IS) or TIA admissions. METHODS Between April 1, 2003, and December 30, 2007, 905 hospitals contributed 479,284 consecutive stroke and TIA admissions. The proportions receiving each quality of care measure were calculated by dividing the total number of patients receiving the intervention by the total number of patients eligible for the intervention, excluding ineligible patients or those with contraindications to treatment. Logistic regression models were used to determine associations between measure compliance and stroke subtype, controlling for patient and hospital characteristics. RESULTS Stroke subtypes were 61.7% IS, 23.8% TIA, 11.1% ICH, and 3.5% SAH. Performance on care measures was generally lower in ICH and SAH compared to IS/TIA, including guideline-recommended measures for deep venous thrombosis (DVT) prevention (for ICH) and smoking cessation (for SAH) (multivariable-adjusted p < 0.001 for all comparisons). Exceptions were that ICH patients were more likely than IS/TIA to have door-to-CT times <25 minutes (multivariable-adjusted p < 0.001) and to undergo dysphagia screening (multivariable-adjusted p < 0.001). Time spent in the GWTG-Stroke program was associated with improvements in many measures of care for ICH and SAH patients, including DVT prevention and smoking cessation therapy (multivariable-adjusted p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Many hospital-based acute care and prevention measures are underutilized in intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage compared to ischemic stroke /TIA. Duration of Get With The Guidelines-Stroke participation is associated with improving quality of care for hemorrhagic stroke.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the potential role of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), an acute type of systemic vasculitis in children. METHODS In this study, 24 children with HSP and ten healthy children (HC) were enrolled from February 2003 to July 2004. Blood samples were obtained from all the children. The total levels of MMP-9 in the plasma were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The second blood samples were obtained from eight of the 24 HSP patients in the convalescent phase. MMP-9 of circulating white blood cells was detected by immunocytochemistry. RESULTS Plasma MMP-9 levels in the acute phase of HSP (249.75 ng/mL) were significantly higher than in HC (191.00 ng/mL) (p = 0.034). Immunocytochemistry showed that MMP-9 was positive in the circulating white blood cells. The MMP-9 levels in the convalescent phases were lower than in the acute phase in six cases, but increased in the other two cases, and one of these two cases had recurrence of purpuric rashes in the lower extremities for 3 months. CONCLUSION MMP-9 plays an important role in the vascular destruction of HSP, and circulating white blood cells may be a source of the MMP-9 secreted into the circulation.

Abstract
AIM To highlight the clinical features and diagnosis of cranio-osteoarthropathy, an extremely rare disease. METHODS Case report and literature review. RESULT A 2.3-year-old child presented with mild swelling of his distal phalanges at the age of 5 months that became pronounced gradually. His parents were consanguineous and his 14-year-old sister had albinism. Physical examination showed normal height and weight. A mild prominent nose, patent cranial sutures and anterior and posterior fontanel, clubbing of the digits without cyanosis, finger joint laxity, large nails, and mild knock-knee were noted. Radiographs showed wormian bones, patent cranial sutures, anterior and posterior fontanels, periostosis and wide diaphyses of long bone, abnormal curvature tibia. CONCLUSION Cranio-osteoarthropathy is an extremely rare occurrence and may be an autosomal-recessive inheritance. This diagnosis should be considered while a patient presented digital clubbing, periosteal new bone formation and decreased neurocranium ossification.

Abstract
Knowledge of the kinetics of biomolecular interactions is important for facilitating the study of cellular processes and underlying molecular events, and is essential for quantitative study and simulation of biological systems. Kinetic Data of Bio-molecular Interaction database (KDBI) has been developed to provide information about experimentally determined kinetic data of protein-protein, protein-nucleic acid, protein-ligand, nucleic acid-ligand binding or reaction events described in the literature. To accommodate increasing demand for studying and simulating biological systems, numerous improvements and updates have been made to KDBI, including new ways to access data by pathway and molecule names, data file in System Biology Markup Language format, more efficient search engine, access to published parameter sets of simulation models of 63 pathways, and 2.3-fold increase of data (19,263 entries of 10,532 distinctive biomolecular binding and 11,954 interaction events, involving 2635 proteins/protein complexes, 847 nucleic acids, 1603 small molecules and 45 multi-step processes). Abstract
OBJECTIVES We estimate for young children the annual excess health service use, healthcare expenditures, and disability bed days for respiratory conditions associated with exposure to smoking in the home in the United States. METHODS Health service use, healthcare expenditures and disability bed days data come from the 1999 and 2001 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). Reported smoking in the home comes from the linked National Health Interview Survey, from which the MEPS sample is drawn. Multivariate statistical analysis controls for potential confounding factors. The sample is 2759 children aged 0-4. RESULTS Smoking in the home is associated with an increase in the probability of emergency department visits for respiratory conditions by five percentage points and the probability of inpatient use for these conditions by three percentage points. There is no relation between indoor smoking by adults and either ambulatory visits or prescription drug expenditures. Overall, indoor smoking is associated with $117 in additional healthcare expenditures for respiratory conditions for each exposed child aged 0-4. Indoor smoking is also associated with an eight percentage point increase in the probability of having a bed day because of respiratory illness for children aged 1-4. CONCLUSIONS Despite the significant progress made in tobacco control, many children are still exposed to secondhand smoke in their home. Reducing exposure to smoking in the home would probably reduce healthcare expenditures for respiratory conditions and improve children's health.
