Measurement of ψ(2 S) meson production in pp collisions at [Formula: see text]. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2012; 72:2100. [PMID: 25814845 PMCID: PMC4370818 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-012-2100-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 8] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/11/2012] [Revised: 05/22/2012] [Indexed: 05/28/2023]
Abstract
The differential cross-section for the inclusive production of ψ(2S) mesons in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] has been measured with the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. The ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in the decay channels ψ(2S)→μ+μ- and ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π-, with the J/ψ meson decaying into two muons. Results are presented both for promptly produced ψ(2S) mesons and for those originating from b-hadron decays. In the kinematic range pT(ψ(2S))≤16 GeV/c and 2<y(ψ(2S))≤4.5 we measure [Formula: see text] where the last uncertainty on the prompt cross-section is due to the unknown ψ(2S) polarization. Recent QCD calculations are found to be in good agreement with our measurements. Combining the present result with the LHCb J/ψ measurements we determine the inclusive branching fraction [Formula: see text] where the last uncertainty is due to the [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] branching fraction uncertainties.

Abstract
The decay B(c)(+) → J/ψπ(+) π(-) π(+) is observed for the first time, using 0.8 fb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of branching fractions B(B(c)(+) → J/ψπ(+) π(-) π(+))/B(B(c)(+)→J/ψπ^{+}) is measured to be 2.41 ± 0.30 ± 0.33, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The result is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

Determination of the sign of the decay width difference in the B(s)(0) system. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 108:241801. Abstract
The interference between the K+ K- S-wave and P-wave amplitudes in B(s)(0) → J/ψK+ K- decays with the K+ K- pairs in the region around the ϕ(1020) resonance is used to determine the variation of the difference of the strong phase between these amplitudes as a function of K+ K- invariant mass. Combined with the results from our CP asymmetry measurement in B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ decays, we conclude that the B(s)(0) mass eigenstate that is almost CP = +1 is lighter and decays faster than the mass eigenstate that is almost CP = -1. This determines the sign of the decay width difference ΔΓ(s) ≡ Γ(L) - Γ(H) to be positive. Our result also resolves the ambiguity in the past measurements of the CP violating phase ϕ(s) to be close to zero rather than π. These conclusions are in agreement with the standard model expectations.

Abstract
A search for B(s)(0) → μ+ μ- and B0 → μ+ μ decays is performed using 1.0 fb(-1) of pp collision data collected at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. For both decays, the number of observed events is consistent with expectation from background and standard model signal predictions. Upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be B(B(s)(0) → μ+ μ-) < 4.5(3.8)×10(-9) and B(B0 → μ+ μ-) < 1.0(0.81)×10(-9) at 95% (90%) confidence level.

Opposite-side flavour tagging of B mesons at the LHCb experiment. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2012; 72:2022. Abstract
The calibration and performance of the opposite-side flavour tagging algorithms used for the measurements of time-dependent asymmetries at the LHCb experiment are described. The algorithms have been developed using simulated events and optimized and calibrated with B+→J/ψK+, B0→J/ψK∗0 and B0→D∗-μ+νμ decay modes with 0.37 fb-1 of data collected in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] during the 2011 physics run. The opposite-side tagging power is determined in the B+→J/ψK+ channel to be (2.10±0.08±0.24) %, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract
The production of ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb-1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The ϒ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode ϒ→μ+μ- and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the μ+μ- invariant mass distributions. The differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the ϒ transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, over the range pT <15 GeV/c and 2.0

Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay B0 → K*0 μ+ μ-. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 108:181806. Abstract
The angular distributions and the partial branching fraction of the decay B0 → K*0 μ+ μ- are studied by using an integrated luminosity of 0.37 fb(-1) of data collected with the LHCb detector. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, A(FB), the fraction of longitudinal polarization, F(L), and the partial branching fraction dB/dq2 are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The measurements are in good agreement with the standard model predictions and are the most precise to date. In the dimuon invariant mass squared range 1.00-6.00 GeV2/c4, the results are A(FB)=-0.06(-0.14)(+0.13)±0.04, F(L)=0.55±0.10±0.03, and dB/dq2=(0.42±0.06±0.03)×10(-7) c4/GeV2. In each case, the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Abstract
First observations of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays B(0) → D(+)K(-)π(+)π(-) and B(-) → D(0)K(-)π(+)π(-) are reported using 35 pb(-1) of data collected with the LHCb detector. Their branching fractions are measured with respect to the corresponding Cabibbo-favored decays, from which we obtain B(B(0) → D(+)K(-)π(+)π(-))/B(B(0) → D(+)π(-)π(+)π(-))=(5.9±1.1±0.5)×10(-2) and B(B(-) → D(0)K(-)π(+)π(-))/B(B(-) → D(0)π(-)π(+)π(-))=(9.4±1.3±0.9)×10(-2), where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The B(-) → D(0)K(-)π(+)π(-) decay is particularly interesting, as it can be used in a similar way to B(-) → D(0)K(-) to measure the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa phase γ.

Observation of B(s)(0) → J/ψf(2)'(1525) in J/ψK+ K- final states. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 108:151801. Abstract
The decay B(s)(0) → J/ψK+ K- is investigated using 0.16 fb(-1) of data collected with the LHCb detector using 7 TeV pp collisions. Although the J/ψϕ channel is well known, final states at higher K+ K- masses have not previously been studied. In the K+ K- mass spectrum we observe a significant signal in the f(2)'(1525) region as well as a nonresonant component. After subtracting the nonresonant component, we find B(B(s)(0) → J/ψf(2)'(1525))/B(B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ) = (26.4 ± 2.7 ± 2.4)%.

Abstract
A search for time-integrated CP violation in D(0)→h(-)h(+) (h=K, π) decays is presented using 0.62 fb(-1) of data collected by LHCb in 2011. The flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the slow pion in the D(*+)→D(0)π(+) and D(*-)→D[over ¯](0)π(-) decay chains. The difference in CP asymmetry between D(0)→K(-)K(+) and D(0)→π(-)π(+), ΔA(CP)≡A(CP)(K(-)K(+))-A(CP)(π(-)π(+)), is measured to be [-0.82±0.21(stat)±0.11(syst)]%. This differs from the hypothesis of CP conservation by 3.5 standard deviations.

Abstract
A search is performed for the lepton number violating decay B+ → h- μ+ μ+, where h- represents a K- or a π-, using an integrated luminosity of 36 pb(-1) of data collected with the LHCb detector. The decay is forbidden in the standard model but allowed in models with a Majorana neutrino. No signal is observed in either channel and limits of B(B+ → K- μ+ μ+) < 5.4×10(-8) and B(B+ → π- μ+ μ+) < 5.8×10(-8) are set at the 95% confidence level. These improve the previous best limits by factors of 40 and 30, respectively.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕ(s) in the decay B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 108:101803. [PMID: 22463401 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.108.101803] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.8] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 12/14/2011] [Indexed: 05/31/2023]
Abstract
We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ decays, using data collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The decay time distribution of B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ is characterized by the decay widths Γ(H) and Γ(L) of the heavy and light mass eigenstates, respectively, of the B(s)(0) - B(s)(0) system and by a CP-violating phase ϕ(s). In a sample of about 8500 B(s)(0) → J/ψϕ events isolated from 0.37 fb(-1) of pp collisions at sqrt[s] = 7 TeV, we measure ϕ(s) = 0.15 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.06(syst) rad. We also find an average B(s)(0) decay width Γ(s) ≡ (Γ(L) + Γ(H))/2 = 0.657 ± 0.009(stat) ± 0.008(syst) ps(-1) and a decay width difference ΔΓ(s) ≡ Γ(L) - Γ(H) = 0.123 ± 0.029(stat) ± 0.011(syst) ps(-1). Our measurement is insensitive to the transformation (ϕ(s),ΔΓ(s)) ↦ (π - ϕ(s), -ΔΓ(s)).

Determination of f(s)/f(d) for 7 TeV pp collisions and measurement of the B0→D-K+ branching fraction. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2011; 107:211801. Abstract
The relative abundance of the three decay modes B(0)→D(-)K(+), B(0)→D(-)π(+), and B(s)(0)→D(s)(-)π(+) produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC is determined from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb(-1). The branching fraction of B(0)→D(-)K(+) is found to be B(B(0)→D(-)K(+)) = (2.01 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.14(syst)) × 10(-4). The ratio of fragmentation fractions f(s)/f(d) is determined through the relative abundance of B(s)(0)→D(s)(-)π(+) to B(0)→D(-)K(+) and B(0)→D(-)π(+), leading to f(s)/f(d) = 0.253 ± 0.017 ± 0.017 ± 0.020, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and theoretical, respectively.

Abstract
We present results of a study of the decay J/ψ → ωηπ+ π- using a sample of (225.2 ± 2.8) × 10(6) J/ψ events collected by the BESIII detector, and report the observation of a new process J/ψ → ωX(1870) with a statistical significance of 7.2σ, in which X(1870) decays to a(0)(±)(980)π±. Fitting to ηπ+ π- mass spectrum yields a mass M = 1877.3 ± 6.3(stat)(-7.4)(+3.4)(syst) MeV/c(2), a width Γ = 57 ± 12(stat)(-4)(+19)(syst) MeV/c(2), and a product branching fraction B(J/ψ → ωX) × B(X→a(0)(±)(980)π±) × B(a(0) (±)(980) → ηπ±) = [1.50 ± 0.26(stat)(-0.36)(+0.72) (syst)] × 10(-4). Signals for J/ψ → ωf(1)(1285) and J/ψ → ω η(1405) are also clearly observed and measured.

Abstract
Using (106±4)×10⁻⁶ ψ(3686) events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e⁺e⁻ collider, we present the first measurement of decays of χ(c1) to vector meson pairs φφ, ωω, and ωφ. The branching fractions are measured to be (4.4±0.3±0.5)×10⁻⁴, (6.0±0.3±0.7)×10⁻⁴, and (2.2±0.6±0.2)×10⁻⁵, for χ(c1)→φφ, ωω, and ωφ, respectively, which indicates that the hadron helicity selection rule is significantly violated in χ(cJ) decays. In addition, the measurement of χ(cJ)→ωφ provides the first indication of the rate of doubly OZI-suppressed χ(cJ) decay. Finally, we present improved measurements for the branching fractions of χ(c0) and χ(c2) to vector meson pairs.

Abstract
Left ventricular (LV) wall stress has intrigued scientists and cardiologists since the time of Lame and Laplace in 1800s. The left ventricle is an intriguing organ structure, whose intrinsic design enables it to fill and contract. The development of wall stress is intriguing to cardiologists and biomedical engineers. The role of left ventricle wall stress in cardiac perfusion and pumping as well as in cardiac pathophysiology is a relatively unexplored phenomenon. But even for us to assess this role, we first need accurate determination of in vivo wall stress. However, at this point, 150 years after Lame estimated left ventricle wall stress using the elasticity theory, we are still in the exploratory stage of (i) developing left ventricle models that properly represent left ventricle anatomy and physiology and (ii) obtaining data on left ventricle dynamics. In this paper, we are responding to the need for a comprehensive survey of left ventricle wall stress models, their mechanics, stress computation and results. We have provided herein a compendium of major type of wall stress models: thin-wall models based on the Laplace law, thick-wall shell models, elasticity theory model, thick-wall large deformation models and finite element models. We have compared the mean stress values of these models as well as the variation of stress across the wall. All of the thin-wall and thick-wall shell models are based on idealised ellipsoidal and spherical geometries. However, the elasticity model's shape can vary through the cycle, to simulate the more ellipsoidal shape of the left ventricle in the systolic phase. The finite element models have more representative geometries, but are generally based on animal data, which limits their medical relevance. This paper can enable readers to obtain a comprehensive perspective of left ventricle wall stress models, of how to employ them to determine wall stresses, and be cognizant of the assumptions involved in the use of specific models.

Abstract
The effectiveness of in situ treatment using zero-valent iron (ZVI) for nonaqueous phase or significant sediment-associated contaminant mass can be limited by relatively low rates of mass transfer to bring contaminants in contact with the reactive media. For a field test in a trichloroethene (TCE) source area, combining moderate-temperature subsurface electrical resistance heating with in situ ZVI treatment was shown to accelerate TCE treatment by a factor of about 4 based on organic daughter products and a factor about 8 based on chloride concentrations. A mass-discharge-based analysis was used to evaluate reaction, dissolution, and volatilization processes at ambient groundwater temperature (~10 °C) and as temperature was increased up to about 50 °C. Increased reaction and contaminant dissolution were observed with increased temperature, but vapor- or aqueous-phase migration of TCE out of the treatment zone was minimal during the test because reactions maintained low aqueous-phase TCE concentrations.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to investigate whether NF-κB contributes to insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS Subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue was obtained from T2DM patients and non-diabetic control subjects. Pre-adipocytes were cultured and differentiated into adipocytes in vitro. Upon insulin stimulation, IRS-1 tyrosine and AKT (Ser473) phosphorylation were examined by immunoprecipitation and immunoblotting, while levels of inflammatory mediators IL-6 and MCP-1, and the DNA-binding activity of NF-κB, were examined by ELISA and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA), respectively. NF-κB decoy molecules were introduced into T2DM adipocytes, and their effects on all these molecular events evaluated. RESULTS Compared with cells from non-diabetic subjects, adipocytes from T2DM patients showed signs of insulin resistance, with significantly reduced IRS-1 tyrosine and AKT (Ser 473) phosphorylation levels in response to insulin stimulation. At the same time, T2DM cells displayed elevated levels of IL-6 and MCP-1, and NF-κB activity. Introduction of NF-κB decoy molecules significantly inhibited both IL-6 secretion and NF-κB activity, while enhancing insulin-stimulated IRS-1 tyrosine and AKT (Ser473) phosphorylation in T2DM adipocytes. CONCLUSION Abdominal subcutaneous fat cells from T2DM patients display signs of insulin resistance and microinflammatory status. NF-κB decoy molecules inhibited NF-κB overactivation and also partly reversed insulin resistance. These results provide evidence of a link between inflammation and insulin resistance in T2DM cells, suggesting a potential contribution of inflammation to the mechanism of insulin resistance.

Abstract
The heart is an organ which pumps blood around the body by contraction of muscular wall. There is a coupled system in the heart containing the motion of wall and the motion of blood fluid; both motions must be computed simultaneously, which make biological computational fluid dynamics (CFD) difficult. The wall of the heart is not rigid and hence proper boundary conditions are essential for CFD modelling. Fluid-wall interaction is very important for real CFD modelling. There are many assumptions for CFD simulation of the heart that make it far from a real model. A realistic fluid-structure interaction modelling the structure by the finite element method and the fluid flow by CFD use more realistic coupling algorithms. This type of method is very powerful to solve the complex properties of the cardiac structure and the sensitive interaction of fluid and structure. The final goal of heart modelling is to simulate the total heart function by integrating cardiac anatomy, electrical activation, mechanics, metabolism and fluid mechanics together, as in the computational framework.

Abstract
Surgical ventricular restoration (SVR) was designed to treat patients with aneurysms or large akinetic walls and dilated ventricles. Yet, crucial aspects essential to the efficacy of this procedure like optimal shape and size of the left ventricle (LV) are still debatable. The objective of this study is to quantify the efficacy of SVR based on LV regional shape in terms of curvedness, wall stress, and ventricular systolic function. A total of 40 patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after SVR. Both short-axis and long-axis MRI were used to reconstruct end-diastolic and end-systolic three-dimensional LV geometry. The regional shape in terms of surface curvedness, wall thickness, and wall stress indexes were determined for the entire LV. The infarct, border, and remote zones were defined in terms of end-diastolic wall thickness. The LV global systolic function in terms of global ejection fraction, the ratio between stroke work (SW) and end-diastolic volume (SW/EDV), the maximal rate of change of pressure-normalized stress (dσ*/dt(max)), and the regional function in terms of surface area change were examined. The LV end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes were significantly reduced, and global systolic function was improved in ejection fraction, SW/EDV, and dσ*/dt(max). In addition, the end-diastolic and end-systolic stresses in all zones were reduced. Although there was a slight increase in regional curvedness and surface area change in each zone, the change was not significant. Also, while SVR reduced LV wall stress with increased global LV systolic function, regional LV shape and function did not significantly improve.

Abstract
With a sample of (225.2±2.8)×10(6) J/ψ events registered in the BESIII detector, J/ψ→γπ(+)π(-)η(') is studied using two η(') decay modes: η(')→π(+)π(-)η and η(')→γρ(0). The X(1835), which was previously observed by BESII, is confirmed with a statistical significance that is larger than 20σ. In addition, in the π(+)π(-)η(') invariant-mass spectrum, the X(2120) and the X(2370), are observed with statistical significances larger than 7.2σ and 6.4σ, respectively. For the X(1835), the angular distribution of the radiative photon is consistent with expectations for a pseudoscalar.

Abstract
The decays ψ'→γπ(0), γη and γη' are studied using data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII e(+)e(-) collider. The processes ψ'→γπ(0) and ψ'→γη are observed for the first time with signal significances of 4.6σ and 4.3σ, respectively. The branching fractions are determined to be B(ψ'→γπ(0))=(1.58±0.40±0.13)×10(-6), B(ψ'→γη)=(1.38±0.48±0.09)×10(-6), and B(ψ'→γη')=(126±3±8)×10(-6), where the first errors are statistical and the second ones systematic.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Plasma cell-free DNA is the soluble DNA and tumor-derived DNA in plasma which has the same mutation as the tumor cellular DNA. This study aimed at comparing the properties of plasma cell-free DNA with the biopsy's DNA in order to evaluate the clinical significance of IgH and TCRγ gene rearrangement in plasma cell-free DNA from patients with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. A total of 360 samples were studied. IgH (FR3A/VLJH) and TCRγ (TVG/TJX) were amplified by PCR. Results of plasma cell-free DNA were compared with biopsy's DNA and mononuclear cellular DNA respectively. Plasma cell-free DNA were successfully extracted from 288 cases of newly diagnosed, refractory and relapsed NHL in total 360 patients (80%).But nothing was found in the other 72 remittent patients. The positive percentage of IgH rearrangement in patients with B-NHL was 81% in plasma cell-free DNA and 77% in biopsy's DNA (P>0.05). As to the ratio of TCRγ rearrangement in patients with T-NHL, the former was 44%, and the latter was 39% (P>0.05). These results show tumor-derived DNA could be detected in tumor loaded plasma, even of underlying cancer patients. For NHL patients, detecting IgH and TCRγ gene rearrangement of plasma cell-free DNA has the same clinical significance as biopsy's DNA. Moreover, it's more simple, convenient and non-invasive. Abstract
Forkhead box protein 3 (FOXP3) has been studied as a biomarker in many human malignancies recently. But in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) the studies are limited. In this study, expression of FOXP3 in ESCC tissue was evaluated in relation to the clinical data. Detection of FOXP3 mRNA was made by using quantitative real-time PCR while protein expression was assessed by immunocytochemistry (n = 112). The results were correlated to the clinical data including age, gender, carcinoma size, carcinoma differentiation, lymphatic invasion and pathological stage. A significantly higher FOXP3 expression in tumors was confirmed than in normal-appearing mucosa. The FOXP3 mRNA and protein expressions were higher in advanced stages (stage II B and III) than in early stages (stage I and stage II A). A significantly higher FOXP3 expression in tumors with lymph node metastasis was also confirmed than in those without lymph node metastasis. No significant correlation was found in age, gender, carcinoma size, or carcinoma differentiation. These results suggest that expression of FOXP3 was higher in ESCC tissue and was closely correlated to lymphatic invasion and pathological stage. It may imply that FOXP3 might play an important role in esophageal carcinoma progression.

Abstract
The sulfated glucomannan can be used to filter the heparin-binding properties of cytokines. In this study, novel sulfated glucomannan-barium-alginate (SGA) microcapsules were prepared to encapsulate islets with barium-alginate (ABa) and calcium alginate-poly-l-lysine (APA) microcapsules as controls. SD rat islets were purified as donor cells to Lewis rats that had been treated with streptozotocin. Intraperitoneal transplantation was performed with about 3000 islet equivalent (IEQ) rat. At week three after transplantation, the concentrations of monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), interleukin (IL)-1 beta, interferon (IFN)-gamma, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha in intraperitoneal fluid were determined using ELISA. At week 8, the islet cell mass in the abdominal microcapsules was excised to test insulin release. The EB-FDA fluorescence staining method was used to observe the functional activity of the islet cells. Compared with ABa and APA microcapsules, SGA microcapsules showed significantly decreased MCP-1 secretion by beta-cells. Also, the concentrations of cytokines IL-1beta, IFN-gamma, and TNF-alpha were decreased significantly. The activity of the transplanted islets was significantly improved in SGA microcapsules, which shielded against cytokines better than ABa or APA microcapsules and may serve as novel method.

Abstract
e15675 Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most common fatal cancers worldwide due to the lack of an early disease screening strategy. Identification of diagnostic markers will greatly improve the morbid outcome. Dickkopf 1 (Dkk1) is a secreted antagonist of Wnt signaling pathway, an important pathway in tumorigenesis. The expressions of Dkk1 seem to be tumor-specific: reduced expressions have been seen in colorectal cancer, but elevated levels were reported for hepatoblastomas. In ESCC, the situation is less clear, for both elevation and reduction of Dkk1 were reported. The serum concentrations of Dkk1 have also been shown to be higher in ESCC patients’ sera in one study. In view of the varied outcome from Dkk1 tissue expressions and the scarce reports on Dkk1 serum concentration from ESCC patients, we therefore sought to determine the tissue expression and serum concentrations of Dkk1 as our first step to evaluate the potential of Dkk1 as a diagnostic marker for ESCC. Methods: The expression levels of Dkk1 in ten ESCC tumor and adjacent non-tumor tissues were examined by Western blot. Serum Dkk1 level of 168 samples were quantified in a double-blind fashion by ELISA (Dkk1 Duoset ELISA development kit from R & D Systems, Minneapolis, MN). To ensure that the serum Dkk1 detection was not affected by autoantibodies against Dkk1 present in sera, we also measured serum Dkk1 autoantibody levels by ELISA with modifications to the ELISA kit. Results: Seven out of ten of the tumors showed elevated Dkk1 level, while only two out of ten of the control normal tissue showed elevation. Surprisingly, after decoding of our serum samples into 80 patients and 88 normal controls, we found that Dkk1 level was significantly lower in patient sera (2.99ng/ml) than the normal samples (5.32ng/ml) (p=0.0001; t-test). The measurements were not obscured by the presence of Dkk1 autoantibodies, as they were not different between patient and control samples. Conclusions: Contrary to previous published results, we found Dkk1 is suppressed in patient sera, and thus our result undermines the potential of serum Dkk1 level as a predictive marker for ESCC. Further investigations will be needed to explain the discrepancies between the studies. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
Low-permeability zones are typically bypassed when remedial fluids are injected into subsurface heterogeneous aquifer systems. Therefore, contaminants in the bypassed areas may not be contacted by the amendments in the remedial fluid, which may significantly prolong remediation operations. Laboratory experiments and numerical studies have been conducted to investigate the use of a shear-thinning polymer (Xanthan gum) to improve access to low-permeability zones in heterogeneous systems. The chemicals sodium mono-phosphate and the surfactant MA-80 were used as the remedial amendments. The impact of polymer concentration, fluid injection rate, and permeability contrast in the heterogeneous systems has been studied in a series of eleven two-dimensional flow cell experiments. The Subsurface Transport over Multiple Phases (STOMP) simulator was modified to include polymer-induced shear-thinning effects. The experimental and simulation results clearly show that using the polymer leads to an enhanced delivery of remedial amendments to lower-permeability zones and an increased sweeping efficiency. An added benefit of using the polymer is the stabilization of the displacing front when density differences exist between displaced and displacing fluids. The modified STOMP simulator was able to predict the experimental observed fluid displacing behavior well and might be used to predict subsurface remediation performance when a shear-thinning fluid is used to remediate a heterogeneous system at larger scales.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer, a heterogeneous disease arising from a complex series of molecular changes, is one of the world's leading causes of cancer deaths. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), an extensive class of small non-coding RNAs, have been implicated in cancer development and progression. One of the first miRNAs to be identified was let-7 miRNA, which has recently been found to be expressed at reduced levels in human lung cancer cells. We used a rapid stem-loop reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction method to quantify human let-7a miRNA expression in samples of human colorectal cancer. This method was able to detect let-7a miRNA in as little as 0.05 ng of total RNA from colorectal mucosa and its specificity was high (100%). Our results showed that the expression of let-7a miRNA was considerably reduced in two of eight patients. To our knowledge, this is the first study of Chinese patients to show reduced expression of endogenous let-7 miRNA in colorectal cancer.

Abstract
We have investigated the effect of left ventricular (LV) shape on contractility and ejection function. In this study, a new contractility index is developed in terms of the wall stress (sigma*, normalized with respect to LV pressure) by means of an LV ellipsoidal model. Using cine-ventriculography data, the LV ellipsoidal model (LVEM) major (B) and minor axes (A) are derived for the entire cardiac cycle. Thereafter, a new contractility index (CONT1) is derived as dsigma*/dt, incorporating the LV ellipsoidal shape factor. Also, another contractility index (CONT2) was developed in terms of the generated sigma* at the start of ejection phase, and maximized with respect to B/Ashape parameter, to obtain the optimal value of B/Aover the physiological ranges of the ratio of myocardial volume and LV volume. The in vivovalue of B/Aat the start of ejection is compared with this optimal value, and the LV contractility is evaluated in terms of the proximity of the in vivo B/Ato the optimal B/A. The results indicate that a non-optimal less-ellipsoidal shape (or more spherical) is associated with decreased contractility (and poor systolic function) of the LV, associated with a failing heart.

Abstract
Previously aortic stiffness is frequently assessed through pulse pressure and pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurements. However, these methods need aortic pressure obtained by catheterization. A new model has been developed to rapidly determine the aortic pressure profile and simultaneously calculate aortic stiffness. Comparison between the aortic pressure result obtained from this and catheterization data demonstrates good agreement, while this method is non-invasive. This totally non-invasive method should be useful in assessing arteriosclerotic disease in clinical setting.

Abstract
We have documented that a cellular chaperone protein, FKBP52, when phosphorylated at tyrosine and/or serine/threonine (Ser/Thr) residues, interacts with the D-sequence in the inverted terminal repeats of the adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV) genome, inhibits the viral second-strand DNA synthesis, and leads to inefficient transgene expression from recombinant AAV vectors in certain cell types. We have also demonstrated that FKBP52 is dephosphorylated at tyrosine residues by T-cell protein tyrosine phosphatase (TC-PTP), and that deliberate overexpression of TC-PTP leads to more efficient viral second-strand DNA synthesis, and increased transgene expression. However, the identity of the putative Ser/Thr protein phosphatase that dephosphorylates FKBP52 at Ser/Thr residues has remained elusive. Using known inhibitors of Ser/Thr phosphatases, we have now identified protein phosphatase 5 (PP5) to be a candidate enzyme. Deliberate overexpression of PP5 in 293 cells, which does not influence cellular growth, leads to approximately 5-fold increase in the transduction efficiency of conventional single-stranded AAV vectors, but no significant enhancement in the transduction efficiency of self-complementary AAV vectors, suggesting that PP5 plays a role in AAV second-strand DNA synthesis. Electrophoretic mobility-shift assays show that in cells overexpressing PP5, the extent of the complex formation between FKBP52 and the AAV D-sequence is significantly reduced. These studies suggest that PP5-mediated dephosphorylation of FKBP52 at Ser/Thr residues augments viral second-strand DNA synthesis and enhances AAV transduction efficiency, which has implications in the optimal use of these vectors in human gene therapy.

Abstract
6099 Background: As the number and complexity of chemotherapy regimens increase, the demands on pharmacy services to reduce chemotherapy preparation and checking times continues to increase. Dose banding, a system whereby doses of intravenous cytotoxic drugs calculated on an individual basis are rounded up or down to predetermined standard doses (the maximum variation of the adjustment between standard dose and doses constituting each band is 5% or less) was identified as a strategy that could be used to address some of the issues around time pressures to help reduce patient waiting times for treatment. Methods: The project consisted of 3 phases; Phase I - literature review to identify dose banding publications; Phase II - selection of drugs to be banded for the pilot. The two drugs selected were 5FU and leukovorin, and Phase III - Time studies pre-, interim and post dose banding implementation to determine drug dispensing time and patients’ wait time for pharmacy related procedures. This occurred for a 2 week period (10 working days) either prior to implementation (pre- 819 patients studied), 4 days after implementation (interim - 854 patients studied) and 4 weeks after implementation (post - 785 patients studied). Results: Drug dispensing time did not decrease with dose banding (pre- 7.9 min, interim - 7.6 min and post - 9.4 min). However, the average patient wait time decreased after piloting the dose banding project (pre - 31.6 min, interim 23.7 min, and post - 27.8 min). The percentage of doses that were banded were 37.8% in the interim time study and 58.2% in the post time study. Conclusions: Although dose banding did not reduce dispensing time in this study, likely because the preparation for dispensing 5FU and leukovorin syringes is normally very simple and quick, patient’s wait time for pharmacy related procedures did decrease. This was probably due to contributions of other factors in the pharmacy process. A reduction in dispensing time could likely be achieved if more complex regimens were considered for dose banding. Dose banding could be used to increase capacity within the chemotherapy suite on the day of administration. It also allows for a better work schedule and increases efficiencies within the chemotherapy preparation and administration areas. Abstract
Tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) induces apoptosis in a variety of tumour cells through activation of TRAIL-R1 and TRAIL-R2 death signalling receptors. Here, we describe the characterisation and activity of HGS-ETR1, the first fully human, agonistic TRAIL-R1 mAb that is being developed as an antitumour therapeutic agent. HGS-ETR1 showed specific binding to TRAIL-R1 receptor. HGS-ETR1 reduced the viability of multiple types of tumour cells in vitro, and induced activation of caspase 8, Bid, caspase 9, caspase 3, and cleavage of PARP, indicating activation of TRAIL-R1 alone was sufficient to induce both extrinsic and intrinsic apoptotic pathways. Treatment of cell lines in vitro with HGS-ETR1 enhanced the cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutic agents (camptothecin, cisplatin, carboplatin, or 5-fluorouracil) even in tumour cell lines that were not sensitive to HGS-ETR1 alone. In vivo administration of HGS-ETR1 resulted in rapid tumour regression or repression of tumour growth in pre-established colon, non-small-cell lung, and renal tumours in xenograft models. Combination of HGS-ETR1 with chemotherapeutic agents (topotecan, 5-fluorouracil, and irinotecan) in three independent colon cancer xenograft models resulted in an enhanced antitumour efficacy compared to either agent alone. Pharmacokinetic studies in the mouse following intravenous injection showed that HGS-ETR1 serum concentrations were biphasic with a terminal half-life of 6.9–8.7 days and a steady-state volume of distribution of approximately 60 ml kg−1. Clearance was 3.6–5.7 ml−1 day−1 kg−1. These data suggest that HGS-ETR1 is a specific and potent antitumour agent with favourable pharmacokinetic characteristics and the potential to provide therapeutic benefit for a broad range of human malignancies.
