Abstract
Although various individual studies have evaluated the correlation between monoamine oxidase B (MAOB), polymorphism, and Parkinson's disease (PD), the results remain inconclusive. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis in the Chinese population to provide comprehensive data on the association between the MAOB polymorphism and PD. Eligible studies were identified via databases such as PubMed, Springer Link, Ovid, Chinese Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese Biology Medicine, throughout November 2015. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strengths of these associations. Eight studies documenting a total of 1385 cases of PD and 1426 controls were included in this meta-analysis. Overall, no significant association was found between the MAOB A644G polymorphism and PD risk in the Chinese population. However, in subgroup analyses, where results were stratified by geographical areas and source of controls, increased risk for PD in Northern China was observed (allele A vs G: OR = 1.33, 95%CI = 1.11-1.58; AA vs GG: OR = 1.46, 95%CI = 1.09-1.97; AA + AG vs GG: OR = 1.42, 95%CI = 1.06-1.90). Similarly, population-based studies also showed significant association between the MAOB A644G polymorphism and PD risk among different populations (allele A vs G: OR = 1.29, 95%CI = 1.11-1.51; AA vs GG: OR = 1.41, 95%CI = 1.09-1.82; AA + AG vs GG: OR = 1.34, 95%CI = 1.04- 1.71). In conclusion, this meta-analysis provided evidence that the MAOB A644G polymorphism may contribute to PD development in Northern China. Further studies conducted in other ethnic groups are required for definite conclusions.

Abstract
Tyrosine phosphatase protein Shp2 is a potential therapeutic target for obesity. However, the mechanism of Shp2 during adipogenesis is not fully understood. The present study investigated the role of Shp2 in the terminal differentiation of preadipocytes. The results showed that Shp2 suppressed adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells; overexpression of Shp2 reduced lipid droplet production in 3T3-L1 cells, whereas Shp2 knockdown increased lipid droplet production in 3T3-L1 cells. Furthermore, inhibition of Shp2 activity also enhanced adipocyte differentiation. Interestingly, Shp2 expression was specifically decreased early during differentiation in response to stimulation with the dexamethasone–methylisobutylxanthine–insulin (DMI) hormone cocktail. During the first 2 days of differentiation, Shp2 overexpression impaired the DMI-induced phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) in 3T3-L1 cells and blocked the peak expression of CCAAT/enhancer-binding proteins β and δ during preadipocyte differentiation. In conclusion, Shp2 downregulated the early stages of hormone-induced differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells and inhibited the expression of the first wave of transcription factors by suppressing the DMI-induced STAT3 signaling pathway. These discoveries point to a novel role of Shp2 during adipogenesis and support the hypothesis that Shp2 could be a therapeutic target for the control of obesity.

Thrombomodulin reduces tumorigenic and metastatic potential of lung cancer cells by up-regulation of E-cadherin and down-regulation of N-cadherin expression. Abstract
Thrombomodulin (TM) is an endothelial cell membrane protein and plays critical roles in anti-thrombosis, anti-inflammation, vascular endothelial protection, and is traditionally regarded as a "vascular protection god". In recent years, although TM has been reported to be down-regulated in a variety of malignant tumors including lung cancer, the role and mechanism of TM in lung cancer are enigmatic. In this study, we found that induction of TM overexpression by cholesterol-reducing drug atorvastatin significantly diminished the tumorigenic capability of the lung cancer cells. Moreover, we demonstrated that TM overexpression caused G0/G1 phase arrest and markedly reduced the colony forming capability of the cells. Furthermore, overexpression of TM inhibited cell migration and invasion. Consistently, depletion of TM promoted cell growth, reduced the cell population at the G0/G1 phase, and enhanced cell migratory ability. Mechanistic study revealed that TM up-regulated E-cadherin but down-regulated N-cadherin expression, resulting in reversal of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the lung cancer cells. Moreover, silencing TM expression led to decreased E-cadherin and increased N-cadherin. Taken together, our study suggests that TM functions as a tumor suppressive protein, providing a conceptual framework for inducing TM overexpression as a sensible strategy and approach for novel anti-lung cancer drug discovery.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the potential preventive effect of probiotics on ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). METHODS This was an open-label, randomized, controlled multicenter trial involving 235 critically ill adult patients who were expected to receive mechanical ventilation for ≥48 h. The patients were randomized to receive (1) a probiotics capsule containing live Bacillus subtilis and Enterococcus faecalis (Medilac-S) 0.5 g three times daily through a nasogastric feeding tube plus standard preventive strategies or (2) standard preventive strategies alone, for a maximum of 14 days. The development of VAP was evaluated daily, and throat swabs and gastric aspirate were cultured at baseline and once or twice weekly thereafter. RESULTS The incidence of microbiologically confirmed VAP in the probiotics group was significantly lower than that in the control patients (36.4 vs. 50.4 %, respectively; P = 0.031). The mean time to develop VAP was significantly longer in the probiotics group than in the control group (10.4 vs. 7.5 days, respectively; P = 0.022). The proportion of patients with acquisition of gastric colonization of potentially pathogenic microorganisms (PPMOs) was lower in the probiotics group (24 %) than the control group (44 %) (P = 0.004). However, the proportion of patients with eradication PPMO colonization on both sites of the oropharynx and stomach were not significantly different between the two groups. The administration of probiotics did not result in any improvement in the incidence of clinically suspected VAP, antimicrobial consumption, duration of mechanical ventilation, mortality and length of hospital stay. CONCLUSION Therapy with the probiotic bacteria B. Subtilis and E. faecalis are an effective and safe means for preventing VAP and the acquisition of PPMO colonization in the stomach.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effects of Xinfeng capsule (XFC) treatment on the expressions of Bcl-2, Bax and caspase-3 in the synovium tissues of the adjuvant-induced arthritis (AA) rats and explore the possible mechanisms. METHODS Spague-Dawley (SD) rats were randomly divided into normal group, model group, XFC (1.5, 3.0, 6.0 g/kg) groups and 40 mg/kg tripterygium glycosides tablet (TGT) group, with 10 rats in each group. Arthritis rat was induced by intracutaneous innoculation of 0.1 mL Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) in the left paw. XFC at different doses and TGT, diluted in water, were administrated via gavage, once a day from the 19th day to the 48th day after AA induction. The normal and model rats were orally administered the same volume of saline solution. Then, ankle-joint samples were taken to examine the degree of AA by HE staining. Bcl-2, Bax and caspase-3 mRNA expressions were determined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Meanwhile, the protein expression levels of Bcl-2, Bax and caspase-3 were detected by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. RESULTS Compared with the model group, XFC treatment improved histopathological changes, such as synovial hyperplaisia, pannus formation, and so on. Furthermore, XFC (3.0 and 6.0 g/kg) groups not only obviously attenuated mRNA and protein expressions of Bcl-2, but also obviously up-regulated the expressions of Bax and caspase-3 both at protein and mRNA levels. CONCLUSION XFC has a protective effect on AA rats, which might be partly associated with its regulatory role in decreasing the expression of Bcl-2 and promoting the expressions of Bax and caspase-3.

Abstract
BACKGROUND When microwave ablation (MWA) is used for subpleural lesions, severe pain was the common side effect under the local anesthesia conditions during the procedure and postprocedure. To study the pain relief effect of artificial pneumothorax in the treatment of subpleural lung tumors with MWA. MATERIALS AND METHODS From February 2012 to October 2014, 37 patients with 40 subpleural lung tumors underwent MWA, including 17 patients of 19 sessions given artificial pneumothorax prior to MWA (group-I), and 20 patients of 21 sessions without artificial pneumothorax (group-II). Patient's pain assessment scores (10-point visual analog scale [VAS]) at during-procedure, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h after the MWA procedure and mean 24 h morphine dose were compared between the two groups. Complications of the artificial pneumothorax were also summarized. RESULTS Pain VAS were 0.53, 0.65, 1.00, 0.24, and 0.18 at during-procedure, 6, 12, 24, and 48 h for group-I and 5.53, 2.32, 2.82, 1.21, and 0.21 for group-II, respectively. Pain VAS in group I was significantly decreased at during-procedure, 6, 12, and 24 h after the MWA (P < 0.001). No statistical pain VAS difference was observed at 48 h after the MWA between the two groups (P > 0.05). The mean 24 h morphine dose was 5.00 mg in group-I and 12.63 mg in group-II (P = 0.000). "Artificial pneumothorax" related complications occurred in two patients from group-I, including one pleural effusion and one minor hemoptysis. No patient in group-I and group-II died during the procedure or in 30 days after MWA. CONCLUSION Artificial pneumothorax is a safe and effective method for pain relief during MWA of subpleural lung tumors.

Abstract
Layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly is a versatile technique for the preparation of multilayered polymeric films. However, fabrication of LbL polymetic film on silk for the in situ growth of high-density silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) has not been realized. Herein poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/poly(dimethyldiallylammonium chloride) (PDDA) multilayers are constructed on silk via the LbL approach, subsequently serving as a 3-dimensional matrix for in situ synthesis of AgNPs. After 8 rounds of LbL assembly, the silk is fully covered with a layer of polymeric film. AgNPs with good crystalline structures could be in-situ generated in the silk-coated multilayers and their amount could be tailored by adjusting the bilayer numbers. The as-prepared silk could effectively kill the existing bacteria and inhibit the bacterial growth, demonstrating the antimicrobial activity. Moreover, the release of Ag(+) from the modified silk can last for 120 h, rendering the modified silk sustainable antimicrobial activity. This work may provide a novel method to prepare AgNPs-functionalized antimicrobial silk for potential applications in textile industry.

Abstract
In this study, 54 sediment samples were collected from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in Southern China to study the spatial distribution and patterns of PFASs in this region. PFAS concentrations in the sediment samples ranged from nd (below detection limit) to 2.41 ng g(-1) dw (dry weight) with an average value of 0.79 ng g(-1) dw. PFAS concentrations were higher at the nearshore sampling sites than in the others. Perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS) and perfluorohexanesulfonate (PFHxS) were the two dominant compounds among the target PFASs, which may be due to their production and use as PFOS substitutes in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) areas. Significant linear relationships were found between total PFAS concentrations and total organic carbon (TOC) (R=0.30, p<0.05). The preliminary environmental risk assessment indicated that PFOS and PFOA in the regional sediments posed no significant ecological risk to the benthic organisms at present levels.

Abstract
Emerging evidence has shown that microRNAs (miRNAs) can act as oncogenes in the initiation and progression of leukemia and lymphoma. Aberrant expression of oncogenic miRNAs, including miR-155, miR-17-92, miR-21, miR-125b, miR-93, miR-143-p3, miR-196b, and miR-223 promotes leukemogenesis through increasing the leukemic stem/progenitor cell population, promoting cell proliferation, blocking cell differentiation, and diminishing cell apoptosis. In addition, abnormal expression of oncogenic miRNAs, such as miR-155, miR-17-92, the miR15a/16-1 cluster, miR21, miR34a, and miR125b has been implicated in lymphomagenesis. Notably, miR- 155 and miR-17-92 profoundly changed the gene expression signatures and signal transduction pathways in various hematopoietic cells, and triggered leukemogenesis and lymphomagenesis. Therefore, miRNAs play an important role in the genesis of leukemia and lymphoma. Accordingly, oncogenic miRNAs may serve as diagnostic and prognostic factors for patients with leukemia or lymphoma, and could be used as targets for novel anti-leukemia and anti-lymphoma drug discovery.

Abstract
White organic light emitting diodes (WOLEDs) were fabricated using blue, green and red emitting layers (EMLs). The device has a structure of ITO/NPB/EML/Alq3/Liq/Al. Here, to control the white color balance, the location of the blue EML in the WOLEDs was fixed and only the thickness of blue EML was changed while both thickness and position of the green and red EMLs were adjusted. When adjusting the thickness of blue EML, the occurrence area of recombination zone was changed to influence the green luminescence. When adjusting the location and thickness of red EML, it could be found that the current density is more sensitive to the location of red EML than its thickness. Furthermore, it was discovered that light was emitted due to the Förster energy transfer even if it was apart from the recombination zone. WOLEDs with a maximum luminance of 17,740 cd/m,2 an external quantum efficiency of 2.12% at 100 cd/m,2 CIE coordinates of (0.328,0.301) and a color temperature of 6,185 K were obtained.

Abstract
A total of 220 surface sediments and eight sediment cores were analyzed to study the distribution and transport of Hg in Chinese marginal seas. Spatial distribution showed a general offshore decreasing trend towards the outer continental shelf. Vertical profiles of sediment cores displayed a general increasing trend from bottom to surface layers. Coastal land-based discharges and river-derived inputs are probably the main sources of Hg in coastal sediments of China seas, while TOC, pH, ocean currents and sediment characteristics could play important roles in the transport and spatial distribution of Hg in sediment. The influence of TOC on Hg concentration is more significant than that of pH. The mud deposits on the coastal shelves are main sinks of Hg in the region. The results showed that sedimentary Hg was affected by regional anthropogenic activities and riverine runoffs, and was also influenced by long-range atmospheric transport and ocean current circulations.

Abstract
The protective role of etanercept in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion is not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate whether etanercept modulates neutrophil accumulation, TNF-α induction and oxidative stress in an ischemia/reperfusion injured rat heart model. Rats were randomly exposed to sham operation, myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) alone, MI/R+ etanercept. The results demonstrated that compared to MI/R, etanercept reduced myocardial infarction area, myocardial myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels, serum creatinine kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, and both serum and myocardial TNF-α production. Etanercept also markedly enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), and reduced the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) in MI/R rats. In summary, our data suggested that etanercept has protective effects against MI/R injury in rats, which may be attributed to attenuating inflammation and oxidative stress.
