Muon spin relaxation study of LaTiO(3) and YTiO(3)

We report muon spin relaxation (μSR) measurements on two Ti(3+) containing perovskites, LaTiO(3) and YTiO(3), which display long-range magnetic order at low temperature. For both materials, oscillations in the time dependence of the muon polarization are observed which are consistent with three-dimensional magnetic order. From our data we identify two magnetically inequivalent muon stopping sites. The μSR results are compared with the magnetic structures of these compounds previously derived from neutron diffraction and μSR studies on structurally similar compounds.

Longitudinal spin density wave order in a quasi-1D Ising-like quantum antiferromagnet

From neutron diffraction measurements on a quasi-1D Ising-like Co2+ spin compound BaCo2V2O8, we observed an appearance of a novel type of incommensurate ordering in magnetic fields. This ordering is essentially different from the Néel-type ordering, which is expected for the classical system, and the peculiar spin structure is caused by quantum fluctuation inherent in the quantum spin chain. A Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid nature characteristic of the gapless quantum 1D system is responsible for the realization of the incommensurate ordering.

Bacillus cereus nosocomial infection from reused towels in Japan

It was noticed that there was an increase in Bacillus cereus nosocomial infections in the summer from 2000 to 2005. In 2005, five bloodstream infections occurred in five patients related to catheter use. The causative strains were distinct from each other and belonged to novel multilocus sequence types (ST): ST365, ST366, ST367 and ST368. Two ST365 strains from two patients were further distinguished by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. B. cereus contamination was observed with reused (dried and steamed) towels (>10(6)cfu/towel) and washing machines in hospital linen rooms. B. cereus strains from towels belonged to ST167, ST365, ST380 and ST382, and a proportion of these were the same, or similar, to strains from patients. All the hospital strains of B. cereus were distinct from those from food-poisoning strains (ST26, ST142, ST381). Ciprofloxacin resistance was observed only in hospital strains. Neither emetic toxin nor cytotoxin K gene, usually present in food poisoning strains, were found in the hospital strains, except for one patient isolate. The data suggest that specific B. cereus strains are circulating within a hospital, with genotypes, antibiotic susceptibilities and virulence gene patterns generally distinct from those of food poisoning, and that in Japan, towels are an important source of contamination, especially in summer.

[Treatment of massive endobronchial hemorrhage after cardiopulmonary bypass by selective coil embolization of the bronchial artery]

A 68-year-old woman underwent aortic valve replacement to treat her aortic regurgitation. The operation was performed successfully. Just before coming off cardiopulmonary bypass, massive hemorrhage occurred through the endotracheal tube. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy could not find the bleeding site and 1,350 ml of blood had been lost. Bronchial angiography under percutaneous cardiopulmonary bypass revealed the right middle branch to be the bleeding site. The endotrachial bleeding was treated successfully by selective coil embolization of the bronchial artery. No further bronchial bleeding occurred. Although we found the bleeding site, we could not identify the cause of hemorrhage.

Novel ordering of an S = 1/2 quasi-1d Ising-like antiferromagnet in magnetic field

High-field specific heat measurements on BaCo(2)V(2)O(8), which is a good realization of an S=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional (1D) Ising-like antifferomagnet, have been performed in magnetic fields up to 12 T along the chain and at temperature down to 200 mK. We have found a new magnetic ordered state in the field-induced phase above H(c) approximately 3.9 T. We suggest that a novel type of the incommensurate order, which is caused by the quantum effect inherent in the S=1/2 quasi-1D Ising-like antiferromagnet, appears in the field-induced phase.

Extraction of weak transition strengths via the (3He, t) reaction at 420 MeV

Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were measured with the (3He, t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O, 26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn, and 208Pb. Using these data, it is shown that the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although theoretical calculations in the distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions.

Structure of thymic cysts in congenital lymph nodes-lacking mice

The ALY (aly/aly) mouse, a mutant of the C57BL/6j strain, has a severe immunodeficiency because of immature development of the immune organs. Both lymph nodes and Peyer's patches are lacking and both the thymus and spleen are small. Previous microscopical observation of their thymus glands revealed the presence of an indistinct border between the cortex and medulla, the absence of Hassal's corpuscles and the reduction of the medullary epithelial cell population. However, other microscopical findings for these glands have not yet been reported. In the present study, we performed light and electron microscopical observation of the thymus and found the consistent presence of extremely irregular shaped cystic cavities lined by microvilli-bearing epithelium in the medulla. The cysts comprised ceca and did not open into adjacent capillaries, although they contained some lymphocytes and macrophages in their lumens. In the thymus glands of normal C57BL/6j mice, only some small cysts oval in shape could be inconspicuously found in the medulla. Therefore, the thymic cysts may normally regress during thymic development, however, in ALY mice, the cysts may remain because of the organ immaturity.

Severe hypoglycaemia in a person with insulin autoimmune syndrome accompanied by insulin receptor anomaly type B

AIMS

A rare case of the insulin autoimmune syndrome (IAS) accompanied by insulin receptor anomaly is reported.

METHODS

Antibodies to insulin and insulin receptor were determined in the patient with severe hypoglycaemia before and after the treatment with prednisolone.

RESULTS

Titers of antibody to insulin and insulin receptors were 73.0% and 41.5%, respectively. Drug-induced lymphocyte stimulation tests were all negative for the suspicious drugs. Her HLA-DR was DRB1*0403/04051. Following steroid therapy, the formation of antibodies was suppressed and alleviated her symptoms. Scatchard analysis yielded findings specific to polyclonal antibodies.

CONCLUSIONS

The changes in autoantibodies resulted in alleviation of the hypoglycemic symptoms as a result of steroid therapy.

Isotopic dependence of the giant monopole resonance in the even-A 112-124Sn isotopes and the asymmetry term in nuclear incompressibility

The strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance (GMR) have been measured in the even-A Sn isotopes (A=112-124) with inelastic scattering of 400-MeV alpha particles in the angular range 0 degrees -8.5 degrees . We find that the experimentally observed GMR energies of the Sn isotopes are lower than the values predicted by theoretical calculations that reproduce the GMR energies in 208Pb and 90Zr very well. From the GMR data, a value of Ktau = -550 +/- 100 MeV is obtained for the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility.

Does operational diagnosis of schizophrenia significantly impact intellectual deficits in psychotic disorders?

BACKGROUND

Evidence suggests that, as a group, patients with schizophrenia have intellectual deficits that may precede the manifestation of psychotic symptoms; however, how successfully intelligence tests are able to discriminate schizophrenia from other psychotic disorders has yet to be investigated in detail.

METHODS

Using Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R) data for 55 inpatients with schizophrenia and 28 inpatients with non-schizophrenic psychotic disorders (NSPD) (schizophreniform disorder, brief psychotic disorder, delusional disorder, psychotic disorder due to a general medical condition, and psychotic disorders not otherwise specified), intelligence performance was compared between schizophrenia and NSPD and among different subtypes of schizophrenia.

RESULTS

There were no significant differences in intelligence quotient (IQ), verbal IQ (VIQ) and performance IQ (PIQ) discrepancy, and subtest scores of WAIS-R between the patients with schizophrenia and those with NSPD. These diagnostic groups were not discriminated well by any WAIS-R variables. Schizophrenia patients with prominent negative symptoms, on the other hand, had a significantly larger IQ discrepancy (VIQ > PIQ) than those without prominent negative symptoms and NSPD patients. Intelligence performance in schizophrenia did not differ with respect to diagnostic subtypes and longitudinal courses.

CONCLUSIONS

The current study failed to show diagnostic usefulness of WAIS-R in discriminating schizophrenia and other psychoses. A diagnosis of schizophrenia does not significantly impact intellectual deficits in psychotic disorders.

Field-induced order-disorder transition in antiferromagnetic BaCo(2)V(2)O(8) driven by a softening of spinon excitation

High field magnetization and ESR measurements on the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnet BaCo(2)V(2)O(8) have been performed in magnetic fields up to 50 T along the chain. The experimental results are explained well in terms of a 1D S=1/2 antiferromagnetic XXZ model in longitudinal fields. We show that the quantum phase transition from the Néel ordered phase to the spin liquid one in the model is responsible for a peculiar order to disorder transition in BaCo(2)V(2)O(8).

Taxane-induced scleroderma

We report five women who presented with scleroderma due to taxanes, mimicking systemic sclerosis. All five patients had received taxane chemotherapy for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer. Marked oedema began first, followed by skin sclerosis occurring mainly at the distal ends of the extremities 6-12 months after the administration of taxane in all patients. Skin biopsies showed full-layer dermal fibrosis with thickened collagen bundles, and perivascular monocytic cell infiltration. These cases resemble systemic sclerosis in terms of their clinical course and histological findings. However, clinical findings including Raynaud's phenomenon and pulmonary fibrosis as well as immunological abnormalities associated with systemic sclerosis were not detected in any of the patients. Although the mechanisms have not been clarified, it should be noted that taxane is causally involved in the formation of scleroderma-like skin conditions.

Sensitive and rapid diagnosis of human parvovirus B19 infection by loop-mediated isothermal amplification

BACKGROUND

Human parvovirus B19 (B19) infections exhibit various skin manifestations that are similar to and hence hard to distinguish from many other skin diseases. The virological diagnosis of B19 infection is usually based on time-consuming serological tests and polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

OBJECTIVES

In this study, a DNA amplification method, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), was used for the diagnosis of B19 infection and was compared with PCR.

METHODS

Ten patients with acute B19 infection and 16 patients with other skin diseases were enrolled. Sera and pharyngeal swabs were used directly as the templates in LAMP. The LAMP reaction was carried out at 63 degrees C for 1 h in a heat block. The reaction products were judged visually, by adding SYBR Green I into the tubes, and by gel electrophoresis.

RESULTS

B19 DNA was detected by LAMP in 10 sera and all of seven tested pharyngeal swabs of 10 patients with acute B19 infection but not in samples from 16 patients with other skin diseases. The results were in agreement with those obtained by PCR except for one case. The reason for the single discrepancy may be that the sensitivity of LAMP is 10(2) times higher than PCR.

CONCLUSIONS

Detection of B19 DNA by LAMP in serum and especially in the pharynx is a rapid and convenient method for the diagnosis of acute B19 infection.

Perfect softening of the ferroelectric mode in the isotope-exchanged strontium titanate of SrTi18O3 studied by light scattering

The mode of the isotope-induced ferroelectric strontium titanate shows a perfect softening at the ferroelectric phase transition temperature , where the frequency of the underdamped mode approaches completely to zero within the instrumental resolution. The spectra of the Raman inactive soft mode have been successfully observed owing to local symmetry breaking and by long-term accumulation of the spectral intensity with a high resolution technique. The mechanism of the phase transition is concluded to be an ideal displacive-type accompanied with perfect softening of the Slater-type polar mode. The difference between the soft mode behavior of and indicates that the origin of the quantum paraelectric state of lies in the quantum fluctuation of the oxide octahedron in the perovskite structure.

Identification of a novel autoantibody reactive with 155 and 140 kDa nuclear proteins in patients with dermatomyositis: an association with malignancy

OBJECTIVE

Myositis-specific autoantibodies (MSAs) are a useful tool in diagnosis, defining clinical subsets and predicting prognosis of dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM). In this study, we identified a novel MSA reactive with 155 and 140 kDa nuclear proteins [anti-155/140 antibody (Ab)] and determined the clinical feature of DM patients positive for this autoantibody (autoAb).

METHODS

Sera from 52 Japanese patients with DM, 9 with PM, 48 with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), 126 with systemic sclerosis and 18 with idiopathic interstitial pneumonia were examined by immunoprecipitation assays. Positive sera were further characterized by immunodepletion and immunofluorescence staining.

RESULTS

Seven of the 52 (13%) Japanese patients with DM immunoprecipitated 155 and 140 kDa proteins from 35S-labelled K562 leukaemia cell extract. No patients with SLE, systemic sclerosis or idiopathic interstitial pneumonia as well as healthy controls were positive for this autoAb. Patients with anti-155/140 Ab developed heliotrope rash, Gottron's papules or sign and flagellate erythema significantly more frequently than those negative. Notably, internal malignancy was found at significantly higher frequency in those positive than those negative (71 vs 11%; P < 0.005). In contrast, none of these patients positive for this autoAb had interstitial lung disease.

CONCLUSIONS

This novel MSA is associated with cancer-associated DM and may serve as a diagnostic serological marker for this specific subset.

Patterns of hobo elements and their effects in natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster in Japan

We studied the dynamics of hobo elements of Drosophila melanogaster in Japan with the goal of better understanding the invasion and evolution of transposons in natural populations. One hundred and twenty-six isofemale lines and 11 older stocks were tested for the presence and genetic phenotype of hobo elements. The oldest H strain, containing complete and deleted hobo elements, is Hikone-H (1957), but Hikone-R (1952) has no hobo-homologous sequences. The findings suggest that the hobo element invaded Japanese populations in the mid-1950s, at about the same time as the P element invasion in Japan. This chronology is consistent with the hypothesis of a recent worldwide hobo element invasion into D. melanogaster in the mid-1950s. In recently collected populations, H degrees strains (low hobo activity and high repression potency) are predominant, whereas H+ strains (high hobo activity and high repression potency) are predominant in the Sakishima Islands, the most southwestern islands of the Japanese archipelago. H' strains (high hobo activity and low repression potency) were first found in limited island populations. Japanese populations have not only full-size hobo elements and 1.5 kb Th elements but also characteristic deletion derivatives (1.6 and 1.8 kb XhoI fragments) that we have named Jh elements. These results are consistent with transgenic experiments with complete hobo elements, in which populations evolved to H+ or H degrees via H', and in which 1.8 kb fragments appeared. We conclude that hobo elements invaded the central region of Japan, spread to the far islands, and that the invasion is currently at an intermediate, nonequilibrium stage.

Expression profiles of melanogenesis-related genes and proteins in acquired melanocytic nevus

We used three types of AMN to investigate the expression profiles of melanogenesis-related genes [tyrosinase, tyrosinase-related protein-1 (TRP1), dopachrome tautomerase (TRP2), Pmel-17/gp100, P-protein, and microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF)], as well as tyrosinase, TRP1, Pmel-17/gp100, and MITF proteins.

RESULTS

All melanogenesis-related genes examined in the junctional type were expressed in the basal epidermal layer. In the compound and intradermal types, mRNA for tyrosinase, TRP2, and MITF was expressed in all of the AMN cells. However, the expression of TRP1, P-protein, and Pmel-17/gp100 in the compound type and TRP1 in the intradermal type became weaker in accordance with the depth of the dermis layer, as compared to those levels in the basal to upper dermis layer. Although tyrosinase and Pmel-17/gp100 mRNA in the compound and intradermal types was expressed in the intraepidermal and dermal components, immunohistochemical staining showed that tyrosinase proteins were not detected in the lower dermis layer and Pmel-17/gp100 proteins were not detected in the dermis.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that all nevus cells that constitute AMN tissue originate from melanocytes. Further, there may be differences in the transcription levels of melanogenesis-related genes as well as in their post-transcriptional regulation between nevus cells located in the basal epidermal to upper dermis layer and those in the lower dermis layer.

Requirement of STAT3 activation for maximal collagenase-1 (MMP-1) induction by epidermal growth factor and malignant characteristics in T24 bladder cancer cells

Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) are latent transcription factors that mediate cytokine- and growth factor-induced transcription. Constitutive activation of STAT3 has been shown in human cancers and transformed cell lines. We report that STAT3, but not STAT1 and STAT5, becomes phosphorylated in response to epidermal growth factor (EGF) and achieves maximal induction of collagenase-1 (MMP-1) transcription by interacting with c-JUN. Phosphorylation of STAT3 protein is biphasic: the first peak within 30 min and the second peak between 4 and 8 h. Association of STAT3 with c-JUN is detected and its constituting STAT3 is increasingly phosphorylated. The STAT and AP-1 elements are necessary for effective induction of MMP-1 promoter by EGF. Mutation of AP-1 element closely located at the STAT site abolishes the binding not only of c-JUN but also of STAT3 to MMP-1 promoter, resulting in the loss of the responsiveness to EGF. By blocking STAT3 activity with the dominant-negative form, we show the requirement of STAT3 for EGF induction of MMP-1 and MMP-10 (stromelysin-2). Furthermore, expression of the dominant-negative STAT3 is sufficient to inhibit the constitutive and EGF-inducible cell migration and invasion and the tumor formation in nude mice. These results demonstrate that STAT3 phosphorylation and its possible interaction with c-JUN are required for the strong responsiveness of MMP-1 to EGF, and STAT3 activation is crucial for exhibition of malignant characteristics in T24 bladder cancer cells.
