Abstract
AIM Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a deleterious cerebrovascular disorder that requires prompt etiological diagnosis. We wished to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the latest generation 3D subtraction CT angiography (CTA) in etiological diagnosis and pretreatment planning of patients with suspected SAH. METHODS A total of 88 patients were included in our study and underwent both 3D subtraction CTA and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) examinations. The 3D subtraction CTA images were reviewed by two independent readers who were blinded to the results of DSA. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values of 3D subtraction CTA were calculated on a per-patient basis. The possibility for surgical treatment was also evaluated based on information provided by CTA alone. RESULTS According to DSA results, 72 patients were diagnosed with ruptured intracranial aneurysms, 5 patients with arteriovenous malformations, and no lesion was detected in 11 patients. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive values of CTA for etiological evaluation of SAH were all 100%. Correct pretreatment decision was made in 67 of 70 patients based on the CTA measurements alone. CONCLUSION THE results of our study indicate that 3D subtraction CTA is an accurate, fast and non-invasive imaging modality that is equal to DSA in etiological evaluation and pretreatment planning of patients with suspected SAH. It may replace DSA as the first step imaging method in patients with suspected SAH, while DSA should still be reserved for case of uncertainty.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most common psychiatric complication facing stroke survivors and has been associated with increased distress, physical disability, poor rehabilitation, and suicidal ideation. However, the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying PSD remain unknown, and no objective laboratory-based test is available to aid PSD diagnosis or monitor progression. METHODS Here, an isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based quantitative proteomic approach was performed to identify differentially expressed proteins in plasma samples obtained from PSD, stroke, and healthy control subjects. RESULTS The significantly differentiated proteins were primarily involved in lipid metabolism and immunoregulation. Six proteins associated with these processes--apolipoprotein A-IV (ApoA-IV), apolipoprotein C-II (ApoC-II), C-reactive protein (CRP), gelsolin, haptoglobin, and leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein (LRG)--were selected for Western blotting validation. ApoA-IV expression was significantly upregulated in PSD as compared to stroke subjects. ApoC-II, LRG, and CRP expression were significantly downregulated in both PSD and HC subjects relative to stroke subjects. Gelsolin and haptoglobin expression were significantly dysregulated across all three groups with the following expression profiles: gelsolin, healthy control>PSD>stroke subjects; haptoglobin, stroke>PSD>healthy control. CONCLUSIONS Early perturbation of lipid metabolism and immunoregulation may be involved in the pathophysiology of PSD. The combination of increased gelsolin levels accompanied by decreased haptoglobin levels shows promise as a plasma-based diagnostic biomarker panel for detecting increased PSD risk in post-stroke patients.

Abstract
A human strain of BDV (BDV Hu-H1) was used to infect human oligodendroglial cells (OL cells). Energy metabolism was the most significantly altered pathway in BDV Hu-H1-infected OL cells. The Raf/MEK/ERK signaling cascade was significantly perturbed in BDV Hu-H1-infected OL cells. BDV Hu-H1caused constitutive activation of the ERK1/2 pathway, but cell proliferation was down-regulated at the same time. BDV Hu-H1 manages to down-regulate cell proliferation, in the presence of activated but not translocated ERK–RSK complex.
Borna disease virus (BDV) is a neurotropic, non-cytolytic RNA virus which replicates in the cell nucleus targeting mainly hippocampal neurons, but also astroglial and oligodendroglial cells in the brain. BDV is associated with a large spectrum of neuropsychiatric pathologies in animals. Its relationship to human neuropsychiatric illness still remains controversial. We could recently demonstrate that human BDV strain Hu-H1 promoted apoptosis and inhibited cell proliferation in a human oligodendroglial cell line (OL cells) whereas laboratory BDV strain V acted contrariwise. Here, differential protein expression between BDV Hu-H1-infected OL cells and non-infected OL cells was assessed through a proteomics approach, using two-dimensional electrophoresis followed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 63 differential host proteins were identified in BDV Hu-H1-infected OL cells compared to non-infected OL cells. We found that most changes referred to alterations related to the pentose phosphate pathway, glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and glycolysis /gluconeogenesis. By manual querying, two differential proteins were found to be associated with mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signal transduction. Five key signaling proteins of this pathway (i.e., p-Raf, p-MEK, p-ERK1/2, p-RSK, and p-MSK) were selected for Western blotting validation. p-ERK1/2 and p-RSK were found to be significantly up-regulated, and p-MSK was found to be significantly down-regulated in BDV Hu-H1-infected OL cells compared to non-infected OL cell. Although BDV Hu-H1 constitutively activated the ERK–RSK pathway, host cell proliferation and nuclear translocation of activated pERK in BDV Hu-H1-infected OL cells were impaired. These findings indicate that BDV Hu-H1 infection of human oligodendroglial cells significantly perturbs host energy metabolism, activates the downstream ERK–RSK complex of the Raf/MEK/ERK signaling cascade, and disturbs host cell proliferation possibly through impaired nuclear translocation of pERK, a finding which warrants further research.

Abstract
Nicotine, the primary psychoactive component in tobacco smoke, produces its behavioral effects through interactions with neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). α4β2 nAChRs are the most abundant in mammalian brain, and converging evidence shows that this subtype mediates the rewarding and reinforcing effects of nicotine. A number of rare variants in the CHRNA4 gene that encode the α4 nAChR subunit have been identified in human subjects and appear to be underrepresented in a cohort of smokers. We compared three of these variants (α4R336C, α4P451L, and α4R487Q) to the common variant to determine their effects on α4β2 nAChR pharmacology. We examined [(3)H]epibatidine binding, interacting proteins, and phosphorylation of the α4 nAChR subunit with liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in HEK 293 cells and voltage-clamp electrophysiology in Xenopus laevis oocytes. We observed significant effects of the α4 variants on nAChR expression, subcellular distribution, and sensitivity to nicotine-induced receptor upregulation. Proteomic analysis of immunopurified α4β2 nAChRs incorporating the rare variants identified considerable differences in the intracellular interactomes due to these single amino acid substitutions. Electrophysiological characterization in X. laevis oocytes revealed alterations in the functional parameters of activation by nAChR agonists conferred by these α4 rare variants, as well as shifts in receptor function after incubation with nicotine. Taken together, these experiments suggest that genetic variation at CHRNA4 alters the assembly and expression of human α4β2 nAChRs, resulting in receptors that are more sensitive to nicotine exposure than those assembled with the common α4 variant. The changes in nAChR pharmacology could contribute to differences in responses to smoked nicotine in individuals harboring these rare variants.

Abstract
Legumes are important for nitrogen cycling in the environment and agriculture due to the ability of nitrogen fixation by rhizobia. In this review, we introduce an important and potential role of legume-rhizobia symbiosis in aiding phytoremediation of some metal contaminated soils as various legumes have been found to be the dominant plant species in metal contaminated areas. Resistant rhizobia used for phytoremediation could act on metals directly by chelation, precipitation, transformation, biosorption and accumulation. Moreover, the plant growth promoting (PGP) traits of rhizobia including nitrogen fixation, phosphorus solubilization, phytohormone synthesis, siderophore release, and production of ACC deaminase and the volatile compounds of acetoin and 2, 3-butanediol may facilitate legume growth while lessening metal toxicity. The benefits of using legumes inoculated with naturally resistant rhizobia or recombinant rhizobia with enhanced resistance, as well as co-inoculation with other plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) are discussed. However, the legume-rhizobia symbiosis appears to be sensitive to metals, and the effect of metal toxicity on the interaction between legumes and rhizobia is not clear. Therefore, to obtain the maximum benefits from legumes assisted by rhizobia for phytoremediation of metals, it is critical to have a good understanding of interactions between PGP traits, the symbiotic plant-rhizobia relationship and metals.

Abstract
Borna disease virus (BDV) is a non-cytolytic, neurotropic RNA virus that can infect a wide variety of vertebrate species from birds and primates to humans. Several studies have been carried out to investigate whether BDV is associated with neuropsychiatric diseases. However, this association is still inconclusive. Two panels of subjects consisting of 1,679 various neuropsychiatric patients and healthy people from three western China provinces were enrolled in this study. BDV p24 or p40 RNA in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were detected in the first panel of 1,481 subjects using reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from the BDV RNA-positive individuals were subjected to BDV p24 antibodies testing by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). BDV p24 or p40 RNA in PBMCs and p24 antibodies in plasma were detected in the second panel of 198 subjects by RT-qPCR and Western blot. A higher prevalence for BDV RNA was demonstrated in patients with viral encephalitis (6.70%), Guillain-Barré syndrome (6.70%), schizophrenia (9.90%) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) (12.70%) compared to healthy controls in the first panel. CSF p24 antibodies were demonstrated in three viral encephalitis patients, two schizophrenia patients and two major depressive disorder (MDD) patients. The prevalences of p24 antibodies in plasma from patients with viral encephalitis (13.24%), multiple sclerosis (25.00%) and Parkinson's disease (22.73%) were significantly higher than healthy controls. This study demonstrates that BDV infection also exists in humans from three western China provinces, and suggests the involvement of the contribution of BDV in the aetiology of Chinese patients with some neuropsychiatric disorders, including viral encephalitis, schizophrenia, CFS, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the morphological features of breast lymphoma (BL) on MRI. METHODS MRI features of 20 patients with BL (12 primary and 8 secondary) were reviewed according to Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System categories. RESULTS 19 cases were unilateral and 1 was bilateral. According to the enhanced images, of the 20 cases, BL presented as a mass in 11 (55%), as an enhancement with no mass effect in 7 (35%) and as a mass and mixed enhancement with no mass effect in 2 (10%). There were 38 masses and 44 lesions with no mass effect in our study. All lesions showed mild heterogeneous internal enhancement. For lesions with mass effect, the margins were smooth in 32% (12/38) and irregular in 68% (26/38); and the shape was oval in 87% (32/38). Kinetic curve assessment (13 cases, 38 lesions) revealed that the average initial rise rate was 104%. The type II enhancement curve appeared in 55% (21/38) of lesions. No significant differences between the primary and secondary BL were observed for any of the MRI features. CONCLUSION BL mostly appeared oval with irregular margins showing mild heterogeneous internal enhancement and/or as enhanced lesions with no mass effect with mild heterogeneous internal enhancement. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE Some special features on MRI are useful for the diagnosis of BL.

Abstract
This study is aimed to investigate whether male circumcision (MC) is feasible among IDUs in China. 1304 drug users who attended methadone maintenance therapy clinics in Guangxi, Chongqing and Xinjiang were selected for participation by using convenience sampling, and completed a self-administered questionnaire. The factors associated with the acceptability of MC were examined via multiple logistic regression models. 45.2% (589/1304) of the participants reported an acceptance of MC. Many of the participants who were initially not willing to accept MC (715/1304) had changed their mind when they were informed that MC would reduce the risk of HIV and STDs (43.4%; 310/715), that MC is associated with few surgery-related complications (23.1%; 165/715), that the surgical procedure could be arranged free of charge (20.1%, 144/715). In the multivariate analysis, higher acceptability of MC was associated with knowledge of the hazards of phimosis (OR=2.22), the presence of phimosis (OR=14.87), and knowledge that MC can prevent AIDS and STDs (OR=1.49); while lower acceptability was associated with residing in Chongqing province (OR=0.41) and an educational level of junior (OR=0.64) and senior high (OR=0.63) school. The MC policy targeting IDUs in China should take into account these factors associated with MC acceptability.

Abstract
1. A previous experiment in our laboratory found that L-threonine supplementation at 0.2 and 0.3% increased egg production and the concentration of serum IgG, respectively. The objective of this current trial was to determine if both supplementation levels can positively influence histological structure, goblet cell numbers, or antioxidant enzyme activities. 2. Babcock Brown layers (n=576), 40 weeks of age, were allocated to three treatment groups, each of which included 6 replicates of 32 hens. Each group received the same basal diet formulated with maize, peanut meal and crystalline amino acids. L-threonine was added to the basal diet at 0 (control), 0.2, and 0.3%, respectively for 8 weeks. Chemical analysis of the diets for threonine values were 0.47, 0.66 and 0.74 %, respectively. 3. The numbers of goblet cells did not change due to L-threonine supplementation. Also, L-threonine had no affect on the villus height and mucosal thickness. No differences were found due to treatments among groups in the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in jejunum or ileum. L-threonine supplementation at 0.2% maximised the concentration of superoxide dismutases (SOD) in both serum and liver. 4. In conclusion, L-threonine supplementation had no affect on gut morphology but may have an antioxidant function at 0.2%.

Abstract
Melt blending, extrusion and drawing of polycarbonate (PC) blends containing a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) are reported for a copolyester PCDT synthesised in this laboratory. A single screw extruder is used at four temperatures. The rheology of the PCDT/PC blend, PCDT and PC was measured by means of a capillary rheometer at these temperatures. The morphology of extruded and subsequently drawn strands was studied with the help of a scanning electron microscope and analysed. In PCDT/PC extruded strands, the morphology of the PCDT dispersed phase, changes from spherical through ellipsoidal to elongated with decreasing processing temperature. In contrast to this, in drawn strands with a draw ratio of 10, the morphology of the PCDT changes from ellipsoidal through elongated to fibrillar with increasing processing temperature. It is believed that the relative viscosity of the two phases is the decisive factor determining the microstructure formation of polymer blends containing thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers. Fibril formation is related to the deformation and coalescence of PCDT melt droplets by the drawing at higher temperatures.

Abstract
A differential molding system for micro injection molding of thermoplastics was designed and fabricated. As the core part, a planetary gear pump was integrated into the molding module and used for metering, delivering and supercharging. The molding system was installed in the stationary platen beside which a servo motor was connected to the transmission shaft of the pump through a coupling. A traditional injection molding machine which was equipped with this module could be upgraded to a precise micro injection molding machine and realized the function of multiple micro injection molding machines. A process study was first performed to verify the machine performance and to determine the influence of the main process parameters. It has been proved by experiments that the differential molding system could realize the manufacture of fine and precision parts with micro structures in one step with high efficiency at low cost.

Abstract
We investigated 2 Chinese families with dyschromatosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH) and search for mutations in the adenosine deaminase acting on RNA1 (ADAR1) gene in these 2 pedigrees. We performed a mutation analysis of the ADAR1 gene in 2 Chinese families with DSH and reviewed all articles published regarding ADAR1 mutations reported since 2003 by using PubMed. By direct sequencing, a 2-nucleotide AG deletion, 2099-2100delAG, was found in family 1, and a C→T mutation was identified at nucleotide 1420 that changed codon 474 from arginine to a translational termination codon in family 2. Two different pathogenic mutations were identified, c.2099-2100delAG and c.1420C>T, the former being a novel mutation, and the latter previously reported in 3 other families with DSH. To date, a total of 110 mutations in the ADAR1 gene have been reported, and 10 of them were recurrent; the mutations R474X, R1083C, R1096X, and R1155W might be the DSH-related hotspots.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE As a small heavily glycosylated mucin-like glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol-anchored cell surface protein, CD24 plays an important role in carcinogenesis of various human malignancies. However, its involvement in osteosarcoma is still unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression pattern and the clinical significance of CD24 in human osteosarcoma. METHODS CD24 mRNA and protein expression levels were, respectively, detected by RT-PCR and Western blot assays using 30 pairs of osteosarcoma and noncancerous bone tissues. Then, immunohistochemistry was performed to analyze the association of CD24 expression in 166 osteosarcoma tissues with clinicopathological factors or survival of patients. RESULTS CD24 expression at mRNA and protein levels were both significantly higher in osteosarcoma tissues than those in corresponding noncancerous bone tissues (both P < 0.001). In addition, CD24 protein was positively expressed in 129 of 166 (77.7 %) osteosarcoma specimens with a cytoplasmic and membraneous staining, and also increased in the osteosarcoma specimens with advanced clinical stage (P = 0.01) and positive distant metastasis (P = 0.005). The univariate and multivariate analyses showed that osteosarcoma patients with high CD24 expression had poorer overall and disease-free survival, and high CD24 expression was an independent prognostic factor for both overall and disease-free survival. CONCLUSION The aforementioned findings offer convincing evidence for the first time that the increased expression of CD24 is correlated with tumor aggressiveness and tumor metastasis of osteosarcoma, and this molecule is an independent prognostic marker for osteosarcoma patients.

Abstract
Human cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) is a unique pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that has a regulatory heme cofactor. Previous studies have demonstrated the importance of Arg-266, a residue at the heme pocket end of α-helix 8, for communication between the heme and PLP sites. In this study, we have examined the role of the conserved Thr-257 and Thr-260 residues, located at the other end of α-helix 8 on the heme electronic environment and on activity. The mutations at the two positions destabilize PLP binding, leading to lower PLP content and ~2- to ~500-fold lower activity compared with the wild-type enzyme. Activity is unresponsive to PLP supplementation, consistent with the pyridoxine-nonresponsive phenotype of the T257M mutation in a homocystinuric patient. The H(2)S-producing activities, also impacted by the mutations, show a different pattern of inhibition compared with the canonical transsulfuration reaction. Interestingly, the mutants exhibit contrasting sensitivities to the allosteric effector, S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet); whereas T257M and T257I are inhibited, the other mutants are hyperactivated by AdoMet. All mutants showed an increased propensity of the ferrous heme to form an inactive species with a 424 nm Soret peak and exhibited significantly reduced enzyme activity in the ferrous and ferrous-CO states. Our results provide the first evidence for bidirectional transmission of information between the cofactor binding sites, suggest the additional involvement of this region in allosteric communication with the regulatory AdoMet-binding domain, and reveal the potential for independent modulation of the canonical transsulfuration versus H(2)S-generating reactions catalyzed by CBS.

Abstract
Fatty acid translocase (FAT/CD36) is a transmembrane glycoprotein that plays an important role in transporting long-chain fatty acids. In the current study, a full-length cDNA of FAT/CD36 was first cloned from the intestine of White King pigeon by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) method. The full-length cDNA of pigeon FAT/CD36 was 2,282 bp, including a 5'-untranslated region of 224 bp, a 3'-untranslated region of 642 bp, and an open reading frame of 1,416 bp encoding a protein of 471 amino acids with the predicted molecular weight of 52.7 kDa. Sequence comparison indicated that FAT/CD36 of pigeon had high identity with other avian FAT/CD36. Using quantitative real-time PCR, expression of FAT/CD36 was the greatest in the duodenum at 28 d posthatch, and in the jejunum, the expression of FAT/CD36 at 14 d posthatch was greater than at 8 d but the same as 28 d posthatch. However, in the ileum, expression of FAT/CD36 peaked at embryonic d 15 and 8 d posthatch. The effects of long-chain fatty acids on pigeon FAT/CD36 and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ (PPARγ) mRNA expression were also investigated in vitro. It showed that a low concentration (5 μM) of oleic acid, palmitic acid, and linoleic acid can significantly increase FAT/CD36 and PPARγ mRNA level in pigeon jejunum. However, for linolenic acid or arachidonic acid, the induction of both gene expressions needed a higher concentration (50 μM or 250 μM). Two hundred and 50 μM palmitic acid was shown to suppress FAT/CD36 gene expression. The results suggest that FAT/CD36 may be a representative of intestine development in pigeon, and it could be regulated by long-chain fatty acids via PPARγ pathway.
