Silver nitrate irrigation to control bladder hemorrhage in children receiving cancer therapy

Silver nitrate irrigations after cystoscopic evacuation of clots stopped intractable hemorrhage from the bladder in 8 of 9 children who had received cyclophosphamide and/or pelvic irradiation for various malignant diseases. This method of management produces fewer adverse side effects yet appears to be as effective as the more drastic measures of control, such as cystectomy or colocystoplasty.

Use of bile-esculin agar for rapid differentiation of Enterobacteriaceae

Bile-esculin agar has been used for several years for the presumptive identification of group D streptococci. All members of the Enterobacteriaceae family will also grow on this medium, but only certain ones can hydrolyze esculin to 6,7-dihydroxycoumarin, which reacts with iron to produce a characteristic blackening of the medium. One thousand and six cultures from clinical specimens representing 20 genera were isolated and identified. Heavy inocula from fresh pure culture isolates on heart infusion agar were placed on bile-esculin agar slants and incubated at 35 C. The slants were examined at 4 h and again at 18 h for esculin hydrolysis. Shigella, Salmonella, Arizona, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus morganii, Providencia alcalifaciens, and Providencia stuartii all produced negative results. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Serratia marcescens, and Serratia rubidaea produced a positive reaction in 4 h. The other remaining eight genera exhibited varying results. The use of this medium in conjunction with triple sugar iron-lysine iron agar has been of great value in differentiating the Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia group from other Enterobacteriaceae.

Platelet serotonin of hyperactive school age boys

It has repeatedly been demonstrated that hyperactive children improve in behaviour and school functioning when treated with amphetamine, methylphenidate and, according to recent studies, imipramine (Conners, 1972). While these drugs affect catecholamine and indoleamine metabolism, there have been few studies intercorrelating the clinical and biochemical effects of these agents. A small number of untreated hyperactive children have been found to have normal urinary catecholamine and indoleamine excretion (Rapoport et al., 1970; Wender, 1971) although whole blood hydroxyindole concentrations have been reported as reduced (Coleman, 1971). In the present study, platelet serotonin content was examined before and during treatment with methylphenidate and imipramine of a group of boys with the hyperactivity syndrome.

Shigella sonnei isolated from well water

A method is described which led to the isolation of Shigella sonnei from well water suspected of being the primary foci in a school-associated shigellosis outbreak.

The incorporation of glucose carbon into various components of embryos and culture medium was studied throughout the preimplantation period of development in the rabbit embryo.

Fixation of carbon dioxide by pre-implantation mouse embryos in vitro and the activities of enzymes involved in the process

The incorporation of fixed carbon from carbon dioxide into mouse embryos was greatest in eight-cell embryos which developed into blastocysts during a 24-hr culture period and was four to five times greater than the incorporation into two-cell embryos cultured for a similar period. The net accumulation of labelled products in the culture medium was greatest during the culture of the morula stage to the blastocyst over 24 hr.

The penetration of serum albumin into phospholipid monolayers of different fatty acid chain length and interfacial charge

1. The highest surface pressure of phosphatidylcholine monolayers allowing penetration of delipidated serum albumin decreased in the order dibehenoyl>distearoyl>dipalmitoyl=dimyristoyl. This pressure was not related to the area occupied or to the space available between the phospholipid molecules at the interface. 2. Penetration of albumin into yeast phosphatidylcholine monolayers was increased by adding a small percentage of long-chain anions (phosphatidic acid, dicetylphosphoric acid) to the film but only when the protein was below its isoelectric point (i.e. positively charged). 3. Stearylamine added to phosphatidylcholine monolayers had no effect on albumin penetration even when the protein was oppositely charged to that of the phospholipid/water interface. 4. The results are discussed in relation to the activation of certain phospholipases by anionic amphipathic substances.
