Abstract
Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) slows the progression of caries and remineralizes enamel subsurface lesions. The aim of this study was to determine the ability of CPP-ACP to increase the incorporation of fluoride into plaque and to promote enamel remineralization in situ. Randomized, double-blind, cross-over studies involved mouthrinses and dentifrices containing CPP-ACP and fluoride. The mouthrinses were used for 60 sec, three times/day for 5 days, and supragingival plaque was collected and analyzed for F. The dentifrices were rinsed as a water slurry for 60 sec four times/day for 14 days in an in situ model. The addition of 2% CPP-ACP to the 450-ppm-F mouthrinse significantly increased the incorporation of fluoride into plaque. The dentifrice containing 2% CPP-ACP produced a level of remineralization similar to that achieved with a dentifrice containing 2800 ppm F. The dentifrice containing 2% CPP-ACP plus 1100 ppm F was superior to all other formulations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The anticariogenic potential of casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate nanocomplexes (CPP-ACP) has been demonstrated using laboratory, animal and human in situ caries models. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of CPP-ACP incorporation into a sugar-free lozenge (pressed mint tablet) on enamel remineralization in a human in situ model. METHODS The study utilized a double-blind, randomized, cross-over design with four treatments: (i) a lozenge containing 56.4mg (3 per cent w/w) CPP-ACP; (ii) a lozenge containing 18.8mg (1 per cent w/w) CPP-ACP; (iii) a lozenge not containing CPP-ACP; and (iv) a no lozenge nil-treatment control. Ten subjects wore removable palatal appliances with four, human-enamel, half-slab insets containing subsurface lesions. Lozenges were consumed, without chewing, four times per day for 14 days duration. After each treatment period the enamel slabs were removed, paired with their respective demineralized control, embedded, sectioned and subjected to microradiography and computer-assisted densitometric image analysis to determine the level of remineralization. RESULTS The incorporation of CPP-ACP into the lozenge significantly increased enamel subsurface lesion remineralization with 18.8 and 56.4mg of CPP-ACP increasing remineralization by 78 and 176 per cent respectively, relative to the control sugarfree lozenge. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that lozenges are a suitable vehicle for the delivery of CPP-ACP to promote enamel remineralization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The increase in the incidence of non-melanoma skin tumours, photoaging, and immunosuppression demand for more effective sunscreen on ultraviolet A (UVA) irradiation. OBJECTIVES The aim of the study is to evaluate the photoprotective effects of a bacterial-derived melanin against UVA-induced damages in vitro and in vivo. Methods Human fibroblasts were used to assess the role of the bacterial-derived melanin on cell viability against UVA. 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and nuclear morphology were employed to evaluate the photoprotection at the cellular level. Fluorometric assays were performed to detect the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cells. Evaluations of the bacterial-derived melanin as a sunscreen were measured by transmission test and persistent pigment darkening on human skin. RESULTS Bacterial-derived melanin efficiently scavenged ROS in the fibroblasts after UVA irradiation. The cell viability of xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) fibroblast treated with varied doses of melanin increased dramatically in comparison with untreated control and the treated XP fibroblasts became more resistant to UVA-induced apoptosis than normal fibroblasts. Although the relative transmission didn't change too much with different concentration of bacterial-derived melanin, this melanin could keep UVA-irradiated skin from pigment darkening and act as an active sunscreen on skin. CONCLUSIONS The bacterial-derived melanin provided significant protection to fibroblast cell and human skin against the UVA radiation. It has the potential to be developed as an active sunscreen for the patients with photosensitivity skin to sun exposure.

Abstract
Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) has been shown to remineralize enamel subsurface lesions in situ. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of CPP-ACP in a fruit-flavoured sugar-free chewing gum containing citric acid on enamel remineralization, and acid resistance of the remineralized enamel, using an in situ remineralization model. The study utilized a double-blind, randomized, crossover design with three treatments: (i) sugar-free gum (2 pellets) containing 20 mg citric acid and 18.8 mg CPP-ACP, (ii) sugar-free gum containing 20 mg citric acid alone, (iii) sugar-free gum not containing CPP-ACP or citric acid. Ten subjects were instructed to wear removable palatal appliances, with 4 half-slab insets of human enamel containing demineralized subsurface lesions and to chew gum (2 pellets) for 20 min 4 times per day for 14 days. At the completion of each treatment the enamel half-slabs were removed and half of the remineralized lesion treated with demineralization buffer for 16 h in vitro. The enamel slabs (remineralized, acid-challenged and control) were then embedded, sectioned and subjected to microradiography to determine the level of remineralization. Chewing with gum containing citric acid and CPP-ACP resulted in significantly higher remineralization (13.0 +/- 2.2%) than chewing with either gum containing no CPP-ACP or citric acid (9.4 +/- 1.2%) or gum containing citric acid alone (2.6 +/- 1.3%). The acid challenge of the remineralized lesions showed that the level of mineral after acid challenge was significantly greater for the lesions exposed to the gum containing CPP-ACP.

Abstract
The Chinese medicinal herb, Epimedium, used traditionally for bone health exerts estrogenic activity (EA) in vitro. A genetically characterized Epimedium brevicornum (EB) extract induced biphasic responses in the mRNA and protein expression of the estrogen-regulated progesterone receptor gene in breast cancer (MCF-7) cells. These changes were mirrored changes in estrogenic receptor (ERalpha) content. In male Sprague-Dawley rats, administration of the estrogenic prodrug, estradiol valerate increased area-under-curve of serum effects for ERalpha (AUC difference: 18,900EA(ERalpha) min; 95% CI: 0-37,800; p = 0.05) and breast cancer cell (MCF-7) growth (AUC difference: 30,200EA(MCF-7) min; 95% CI: 24,200-36,200; p<0.001), compared to placebo. Oral administration of Epimedium brevicornum increased ERalpha activity (1320EA(ERalpha) min, p<0.01). Our data indicate that estrogen-responsive bioassays can measure the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics of estrogenic activity in serum. Epimedium brevicornum extract increases estrogenic activity in serum and human studies are required to evaluate whether Epimedium extracts have utility for estrogen replacement therapy.

Abstract
Botanical extracts differ from conventional supplements in that they are complicated mixtures of many bioactive compounds. Here we describe our experience with a traditional Chinese medicinal plant Epimedium sp. to illustrate the scientific challenges of firstly, obtaining a standardized product from a complex mixture and secondly, evaluating that product for preclinical and clinical efficacy. In contrast, to its colloquial name 'Horny goat weed' and Internet advertisements as a herbal 'Viagra' for men, extracts of Epimedium are strongly oestrogenic due to the presence of novel potent phytoestrogens of the prenyl-flavone family. Since Epimedium is not cultivated, it was necessary to source for taxonomically identified samples and to authenticate their species by phylogenetic, chemical and bioresponse profiling. The feasibility of using a panel of oestrogen-responsive cell-based bioassays to measure summated oestrogenic effects at close time points for pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modelling was evaluated. We document proportionate oestrogenic responses in sera of animals fed oestrogenic drugs and botanical extracts, indicating that these target molecule responsive cell-based bioassays may have utility to capture the global effects of the myriad bioactive compounds in botanical extracts, informing the design of rigorous clinical trials for safety and efficacy.

Abstract
Among adult patients with isolated microscopic haematuria (IMH) which is defined as persistent microscopic haematuria but without proteinura, hypertension, renal insufficiency, urinary tract infection or structural abnormality of the urinary tract, some patients have chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN), in whom early diagnosis by renal biopsy is beneficial to timely intervention. Nevertheless, a considerable number of patients with optimistic prognosis [e.g. thin basement membrane nephropathy (TBMN)] undergo invasive and needless renal biopsy. Indicators for weighing the necessity of renal biopsy would be clinically significant. To investigate the value of urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (UACR), serum IgA level, serum C3 level and serum IgA to C3 ratio in predicting the necessity of renal biopsy for adult patients with IMH, 216 patients were studied retrospectively. Patients were divided into: (CGN group, n=137), (TBMN group, n=56) and normal biopsy (normal group, n=23). Of all patients, 131 (61%) evidenced microalbuminuria (UACR=30-299 mg/g) and 85 (39%) had normoalbuminuria (UACR<30 mg/g). The mean value of UACR in CGN group was higher (96+/-17 mg/g) compared with that in TBMN (20+/-4 mg/g, p<0.01) or normal (18+/-3 mg/g, p<0.01) group. The mean values of serum IgA and serum IgA/C3 ratio in patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN) were significantly higher than those with non-IgAN (380+/-103:217+/-99 mg/dl, p<0.01; 4.5+/-1.2 : 2.4+/-0.9, p<0.01). The odds ratio for distinguishing IgAN from non-IgAN was significantly correlated with serum IgA level and serum IgA to C3 ratio. For adult patients with IMH, UACR, serum IgA level and serum IgA to C3 ratio are non-invasive markers for predicting the necessity of renal biopsy.

Abstract
To understand the factors contributing to estrogenic properties of extracts from the genus Epimedium L. (Berberidaceae), we performed taxonomic, genetic and chemical characterization on 37 specimens from 18 species and related these to estrogen receptor (ERalpha and ERbeta) bioactivity, as measured by reporter genes in stable human cells. Boot strap values derived from amplified fragment length polymorphisms indicated that specimens of E. koreanum, E. brevicornum, E. myrianthum, E. leishanense, and E. membranaceum were genetically distinct and this was supported by their very similar ERalpha activities. In contrast, specimens from E. pubescens and E. sagittatum were diverse both genetically, chemically and in terms of ERalpha and ERbeta bioactivities. Strikingly, a genetic cluster comprising six rare Epimedium species exhibited strongest ERalpha and ERbeta activity, and this bioactivity was positively correlated with content of trace flavonoid aglycones (kaempferol, apigenin, quercetin, luteolin and breviflavone B). In contrast, there was no association between estrogenic activity and the major flavonol glycoside constituents (icariin and epimedin A-C). Although they exhibited equally strong ERalpha and ERbeta activity, E. koreanum can be clearly differentiated from E. pubescens and E. brevicornum by genetic distance and its significantly lower content of epimedin C. Our morphologic, genetic, chemical and bioactivity profiling provide the basis for the production of extracts with reproducible estrogenic properties. Such reproducibility will be critical for the standardization of Epimedium-based products.

Abstract
Many women are using botanical alternatives for menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) because current progestins, compounds with progesterone activity, have adverse risk profiles. However the development of phyto-progestins for HRT is hampered by the absence of basic pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) data due to the lack of methods to capture summated effects of the numerous compounds that contribute to bioactivity in vivo. In this study, we explored the utility of progesterone receptor (PR)-driven bioassays to track changes in serum progestogenic activity following administration of traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Ligusticum chuanxiong, with potent progestogenic activity. Sensitive and specific (>300-fold) increases in progestogenic activity were observed when HeLa cells transfected with PR and a PR-driven promoter were exposed to the progestogenic drug, medroxy-progesterone acetate (MPA), suggesting the utility of the bioassay to measure progestogenic effects for PK/PD studies. Progestogens were administered to male Sprague-Dawley rats and serum extracted for measurement of progestogenic activity. Effect-time studies indicate that injection of MPA and L. chuanxiong extract raised area-under-curve of progestogenic activity in sera by 8.2-fold (p<0.001) and 4.5-fold (p<0.01) respectively, compared to sera from rats administered vehicle only. Administration of MPA and L. chuanxiong extract by the oral route resulted in a 5.4 (p<0.001) and 2.3-fold (p=0.07) increase respectively. Our data suggest that PR-responsive reporter gene bioassays can measure bioavailability of compounds, known and unknown, of complex botanicals for hormone replacement therapy. L. chuanxiong extracts exert progestogenic activity in vivo, and may have utility for progesterone-replacement therapy.

Abstract
20014 Background: Changes in gene expression that occur during cellular transformation and establishment of metastases provide valuable information that may help determine prognosis and direct treatment. We have obtained gene expression profiles from primary colon tumors and metastases to the liver (V), lung (L), and peritoneum (P). Methods: Ten cases, with matched controls, were profiled for the expression of >18,000 human transcripts using Affymetrix U133A chips. Data were filtered using GeneSifter analysis software to identify genes with 2-fold or greater differences in expression relative to the control group. Gene expression levels for primary colon samples were compared to normal colon while metastatic tissues were compared to primary colon samples. Differentially regulated genes were then associated with KEGG pathways for additional analysis. Results: Relative to normal colon samples, primary colon samples displayed high positive z-score values for genes involved in nitrogen and sulfur metabolism (7.30 and 8.10, respectively). Expression level changes for individual genes in each cluster were statistically significant (e.g. p = 0.014 for carbonic anhydrase I in the nitrogen metabolism cluster). Metastatic tissue from liver, lung and peritoneum all displayed substantially decreased expression for genes involved in butanoate and propanoate metabolism, valine, leucine and isoleucine degradation, and moderately decreased expression for genes involved in JAK-STAT signaling. For example, L-3-hydroxyacyl-Coenzyme A dehydrogenase (short chain), a gene involved in both butanoate metabolism and valine, leucine and isoleucine degradation, was down-regulated in tissue from all three metastatic sites relative to primary colon tumor tissue [p = 0.024 (V), p = 0.022 (L), p = 0.005 (P)]. In addition, genes involved in phosphatidylinositol signaling were down-regulated in liver metastases but not in lung or peritoneal metastatic tissue. Conclusions: These results demonstrate that changes in expression levels for genes involved in basic metabolism and cell signaling occur during the course of metastasis. The changes that occur during development of the metastatic phenotype can be independent of, or specific to, the site of metastasis. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
17099 Background: Prolonged infusion of gemcitabine have shown increased levels of the active triphosphate metabolite that theorically could increase the response rate and toxicity. The objectives of this study were to evaluated the efficacy and safety of this combination of using gemcitabine as a rate infusion of 10 mg/m2 per min with carboplatin in front-line chemonaive patients with advanced NSCLC. Methods: Fifty-four chemonaive patients have been included. 44 were male and 10 female. Median age was 63 years (19–75). 13% had ECOG 0 and 53.7% ECOG 1 and 33.3% ECOG 2. 32 (59.2%) patients had adenocarcinoma, 13 (24.1%) squamous cell, 1 (1.9%) large cell carcinoma, and 8 (14.8%) others. Eight (14.8%) had stage IIIB and 46 (85.2%) stage IV. Treatment was consisted of 1200 mg/m2 gemcitabine given as a 2-hour continuous infusion (10 mg/m2 per min) on days 1 and 8 of each cycle an AUC 5 carboplatin as on day 1, repeating each cycle every 21 days. A total of 223 chemotherapy cycles were administered, with a median of 4 cycles per patient (range 1–6), and 15 (27.8%) patients received all six cycles. Results: Of the fifty-four patients enrolled, all were evaluated for toxicity (according to the WHO scale) and 51 assessed for response (according to the RECIST criteria), the overall response rate (ORR) was 41.2% (95% confidence interval, 28% to 57%), including two complete responses (CRs: 3.9%) and 19 partial responses (PRs: 37.3%). As per the intent-to-treat (ITT) analysis, the ORR was 38.9%. With a median follow-up time of 10.8 months, the median TTP was 5.0 months (range 3.7–6.3 months), median OS time was 11.5 months (range 9.9–13.1 months) and 1-year survival was 41.7% (95% CI 26% to 57%) and 2-year survival was 19.3% (4.4% to 34.2%).The main grade 3–4 toxicity consisted of neutropenia (55.6%) and thrombocytopenia (57.4%).Patients were required platelet transfusion in 27 cycles (12.1%) and haematopoietic growth factors support care in 56 (25.1%) cycles. No bleeding episodes were recorded. Grade 3 nausea/vomiting occurred in 5.6% and grade 1–2 skin rash occurred in 42.6%. Conclusions: Prolonged gemcitabine infusion combined with carboplatin is manageable tolerated and its efficacy is similar to that of other chemotherapeutic schemes used for NSCLC treatment. A total of 223 chemotherapy cycles were administered, with a median of four cycles per patient (range 1-6), and 15 (28%) patients received all six cycles. RESULTS Of the 54 patients enrolled, all were evaluated for toxicity and 51 assessed for response. The overall response rate was 41% (95% confidence interval, 28-57%) with complete and partial responses of 4 and 37%, respectively. The median time to disease progression was 5.0 months (95% CI, 3.7-6.3 months), and median overall survival time was 11.5 months (95% CI, 9.9-13.1 months). One-year survival was 42%. The main grade 3-4 toxicity (according to the WHO scale) consisted of neutropenia (56%) and thrombocytopenia (57%). Patients were required platelet transfusion in 27 cycles (12%) and hematopoietic growth factors support care in 56 (25%) cycles. No bleeding episodes were recorded. Grade 3 nausea/vomiting occurred in 6% and grade 1-2 skin rash occurred in 43%. Abstract
Five dimeric phthalides were isolated from rhizomes of Ligusticum chuanxiong and their structures deduced based on spectral data. All compounds and their parent extracts were assessed for progesterone-like activity using a progesterone receptor driven reporter-gene bioassay. Among all the compounds, riligustilide, displayed weak progesterone-like activity (EC50 approximately 81 microM), whereas, (3Z')-(3a'R,6'R,3R,6R,7R)-3,8-dihydro-6.6',7.3a'-diligustilide (Mr: 382, EC50 approximately 90 nM), was found to be a potent and specific activator of the progesterone receptor. Levistolide A, although having a very similar plenary structure, was inactive indicating the importance of stereochemistry of chiral centers and flexibility of butylidene side chain for progestogenic activity. These bioactive phthalides and their parent extracts (EC50 approximately 8 microg/ml) may have utility for treatment of conditions requiring progesterone action.

Abstract
Compounds that target the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors PPARalpha and PPARgamma are used to correct dyslipidemia and to restore glycemic balance, respectively. Because the majority of diabetic patients suffer from atherogenic lipid abnormalities, in addition to insulin resistance, ligands are required that can activate both PPARalpha and PPARgamma. In this study, we used chimeric PPARalpha/gamma reporter-gene bioassays to screen herbal extracts with purported antidiabetic properties. Extracts of Astragalus membranaceus and Pueraria thomsonii significantly activated PPARalpha and PPARgamma. Bioassay-guided fractionation resulted in the isolation of the isoflavones, formononetin, and calycosin from Astragalus membranaceus, and daidzein from Pueraria thomsonii as the PPAR-activating compounds. We investigated the effects of these and 2 common isoflavones, genistein and biochanin A, using chimeric and full-length PPAR constructs in vitro. Biochanin A and formononectin were potent activators of both PPAR receptors (EC50 = 1-4 micromol/L) with PPARalpha/PPARgamma activity ratios of 1:3 in the chimeric and almost 1:1 in the full-length assay, comparable to those observed for synthetic dual PPAR-activating compounds under pharmaceutical development. There was a subtle hierarchy of PPARalpha/gamma activities, indicating that biochanin A, formononetin, and genistein were more potent than calycosin and daidzein in chimeric as well as full-length receptor assays. At low doses, only biochanin A and formononetin, but not genistein, calycosin, or daidzein, activated PPARgamma-driven reporter-gene activity and induced differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Our data suggest the potential value of isoflavones, especially biochanin A and their parent botanicals, as antidiabetic agents and for use in regulating lipid metabolism.

Abstract
Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation (ANAMMOX) is a novel biological nitrogen removal process, which is regarded as the most economical process at present. In this paper, two lab-scale UASB reactors, one of which was inoculated with the mixture of anaerobic sludge and aerobic sludge, the other with river sediments, were started up, using the inorganic synthetic water containing ammonium and nitrite as influent. After 421 days' and 356 days operation respectively, the ammonium removal efficiencies in two reactors reached 94% and 86% respectively, the total nitrogen volumetric loading rates were 2.5 and 1.6 kgN/m3 x d. ANAMMOX granules were obtained in both reactors; the color of most granules was brown, but some of them were red. Based on the observation and studies on the microstructure of the granules, three kinds of ANAMMOX granular sludge formation mechanisms were proposed: adhering biofilm and disintegrated granular core mechanism, adhering biofilm and inorganic core mechanism and the self-coherence mechanism. For phylogenetic characterization of anaerobic ammonium oxidizers, 16S rDNA approach was performed using Planctomycetales-specific PCR amplification. The dominant anammox bacteria occupied more than 90% of Planctomycetales-specific bacteria, and 27% of all bacteria in reactors. The dominant anammox bacteria distantly related to all currently reported candidate anammox genera. Functional gene of amoA was analyzed to investigate the 'aerobic' ammonium-oxidizing bacteria in beta-Proteobacteria. The 'aerobic' ammonium-oxidizing bacteria were more diverse than anammox bacteria, but most of them clustered in anoxic ammonium-oxidizing Nitrosomonas eutropha/europaea groups. The composition of 'aerobic' ammonium-oxidizing bacteria is only 2% of all of bacteria in reactors.

Abstract
The aim of this clinical study was to investigate the acid resistance of enamel lesions remineralized in situ by a sugar-free chewing gum containing casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate nanocomplexes (CPP-ACP: Recaldent). The study utilized a double-blind, randomized, crossover design with two treatments: (i) sugar-free gum containing 18.8 mg of CPP-ACP, and (ii) sugar-free gum not containing CPP-ACP as control. Subjects wore removable palatal appliances with insets of human enamel containing demineralized subsurface lesions and chewed the gum for 20 min 4 times per day for 14 days. After each treatment the enamel slabs were removed and half of each lesion challenged with acid in vitro for 8 or 16 h. The level of remineralization was determined using microradiography. The gum containing CPP-ACP produced approximately twice the level of remineralization as the control sugar-free gum. The 8- and 16-hour acid challenge of the lesions remineralized with the control gum resulted in 65.4 and 88.0% reductions, respectively, of deposited mineral, while for the CPP-ACP-remineralized lesions the corresponding reductions were 30.5 and 41.8%. The acid challenge after in situ remineralization for both control and CPP-ACP-treated lesions resulted in demineralization underneath the remineralized zone, indicating that the remineralized mineral was more resistant to subsequent acid challenge. The results show that sugar-free gum containing CPP-ACP is superior to an equivalent gum not containing CPP-ACP in remineralization of enamel subsurface lesions in situ with mineral that is more resistant to subsequent acid challenge.

Abstract
AIMS The objective of this work was to purify the tyrosinase from Bacillusthuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Bt) (CCTCC AB 90010) and study its enzymatic properties. METHODS AND RESULTS A 'one-step' purification method was used in this work, which was an easy, high-yield purification method. Tyrosinase activity of this purity was measured under different conditions to study its kinetic characterizations. The optimum pH and thermal stability of this enzyme were also determined. The results revealed that the tyrosinase from Bt has distinct properties compared with those from other sources. CONCLUSIONS A heat-inducible tyrosinase of a wild strain of Bt was identified and partially characterized. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The distinct properties of Bt tyrosinase are important to the application of Bt as a biology pesticide.

Abstract
PURPOSE The three principal studies dedicated to the natural history of peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) from colorectal cancer consistently showed median survival ranging between 6 and 8 months. New approaches combining cytoreductive surgery and perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy suggest improved survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective multicenter study was performed to evaluate the international experience with this combined treatment and to identify the principal prognostic indicators. All patients had cytoreductive surgery and perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (intraperitoneal chemohyperthermia and/or immediate postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy). PC from appendiceal origin was excluded. RESULTS The study included 506 patients from 28 institutions operated between May 1987 and December 2002. Their median age was 51 years. The median follow-up was 53 months. The morbidity and mortality rates were 22.9% and 4%, respectively. The overall median survival was 19.2 months. Patients in whom cytoreductive surgery was complete had a median survival of 32.4 months, compared with 8.4 months for patients in whom complete cytoreductive surgery was not possible (P <.001). Positive independent prognostic indicators by multivariate analysis were complete cytoreduction, treatment by a second procedure, limited extent of PC, age less than 65 years, and use of adjuvant chemotherapy. The use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, lymph node involvement, presence of liver metastasis, and poor histologic differentiation were negative independent prognostic indicators. CONCLUSION The therapeutic approach combining cytoreductive surgery with perioperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy achieved long-term survival in a selected group of patients with PC from colorectal origin with acceptable morbidity and mortality. The complete cytoreductive surgery was the most important prognostic indicator.
