Abstract
This study was designed to assess the dose-related effects of remifentanil on arterial oxygenation during one-lung ventilation (OLV) under total intravenous anaesthesia with propofol. A total of 104 patients scheduled for elective lung resection surgery requiring OLV were randomly assigned to one of four groups with a target effect-site concentration (Ce) of remifentanil of 0.5, 1, 2 or 4 ng/ml. Patients were anaesthetized with propofol and remifentanil in 100% oxygen. Arterial blood gas analysis was performed after 15 min of two-lung ventilation (TLV15, baseline) and after 15 and 30 min of OLV (OLV15 and OLV30). Mean arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) decreased significantly at OLV15 and OLV30 compared with baseline in all groups, but was comparable in the four groups at each time point, suggesting that remifentanil infusion with a Ce < or =4 ng/ml can be successfully used for anaesthesia with propofol during OLV in lung surgery without any significant changes in PaO2.

Abstract
The Asiatic black bear is one of the most endangered mammals in South Korea owing to population declines resulting from human exploitation and habitat fragmentation. To restore the black bear population in South Korea, 27 bear cubs from North Korea and Russian Far East (Primorsky Krai) were imported and released into Jirisan National Park, a reservoir of the largest wild population in South Korea, in 2004. To monitor the success of this reintroduction, the genetic diversity and population structure of the reintroduced black bears were measured using both mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers. Mitochondrial D-loop region DNA sequences (615 bp) of 43 Japanese black bears from previous study and 14 Southeast Asian black bears in this study were employed to obtain phylogenetic inference of the reintroduced black bears. The mitochondrial phylogeny indicated Asiatic black bear populations from Russian Far East and North Korea form a single evolutionary unit distinct from populations from Japan and Southeast Asia. Mean expected heterozygosity (H(E)) across 16 microsatellite loci was 0.648 for Russian and 0.676 for North Korean populations. There was a moderate but significant level of microsatellite differentiation (F(ST) = 0.063) between black bears from the 2 source areas. In addition, genetic evidences revealed that 2 populations are represented as diverging groups, with lingering genetic admixture among individuals of 2 source populations. Relatedness analysis based on genetic markers indicated several discrepancies with the pedigree records. Implication of the phylogenetic and genetic evidences on long-term management of Asiatic black bears in South Korea is discussed.

Abstract
Swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) is caused by a new strain of the influenza virus. The disease has spread rapidly and was declared a pandemic in April, 2009. So far, however, there is a scarcity of information regarding the complications of swine influenza. A report of the disease in the winter of 2009 in the Southern Hemisphere found that the most common manifestations of influenza A virus infection are upper respiratory tract infection and pneumonia. Although there may be an association between fulminant myocarditis and Swine influenza, cardiovascular complications resulting from swine Influenza A infection are exceedingly rare. We report a case of acute constrictive pericarditis in a healthy subject infected by the swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus.

Abstract
Rutile TiO2 nanoneedle flowers (representing concurrent nano-micro hierarchical morphology) with high shape anisotropy ratio are synthesized at room temperature by using a simple and efficient one step electrochemical process of anodic dissolution. This process employs highly acidic bath of perchloric acid (pH <2) and a large current density on the surface of Titanium foil to form nanostructures. The diameter and length of rutile TiO2 nanoneedle is approximately 8 nm and 100 nm respectively (aspect ratio >10). Dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) configured using such rutile TiO2 flowers is shown to exhibit IPCE of 30% and power conversion efficiency of approximately 3.6%.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the value of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in monitoring disease activity and predicting treatment response in idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (iRPF). PATIENTS AND METHODS This prospective study was approved by the institutional review board. Informed consent was obtained from all patients. Twenty-six patients with iRPF receiving tamoxifen monotherapy underwent repeated FDG-PET (baseline and, if positive, at 3 months) and computed tomographic (CT) scanning (baseline, 4 and 8 months). Maximal RPF mass thickness in 3 different view directions was measured on each CT scan; FDG-uptake was semi-quantified using a visual 4-point scale. Initial and follow-up PET scan results were correlated with clinical, laboratory and CT scan follow-up data. Treatment outcome was the aggregate measure of clinical, laboratory and CT-documented response to tamoxifen. RESULTS FDG-PET was positive in 20 patients. Patients with positive PET scan result had higher C-reactive protein level (P=0.02) and larger mass size (P=0.01) compared with patients with negative PET scan result. Visual PET score correlated with C-reactive protein level (P=0.002) and CT-documented mass thickness (P=0.04). Visual PET score decreased following treatment (P<0.01). This decrease correlated with decrease in ESR (P<0.001) but not with CT-documented mass regression. Positive predicting value (PPV) of initial positive PET scan result was 0.63; PPV of negative follow-up PET scan result in patients with initial positive PET scan result was 0.66. CONCLUSION FDG-PET is valuable in detecting (recurrent) disease activity. Short-term follow-up with FDG-PET cannot be routinely recommended for the therapeutic evaluation of RPF disease in tamoxifen-treated patients.

Abstract
A rapid detection method for Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), which has the virulent stx2 gene, was developed using a two-step, ultra-rapid real-time (URRT) PCR. URRT PCR was designed to detect the stx2 gene using a microchip-based, real-time PCR system, GenSpector TMC-1000, which only has a 6 microl total reaction volume with an extremely short denaturation step and combined annealing/extension step (1 and 3 s, respectively) for each cycle. Specific primers for the stx2 gene were designed to amplify a 100 bp region known for genetic stability among the various EHEC strains. Using the URRT PCR method, stx2 gene could be detected in 7 min 8 s including melting point (Tm) analysis. The detection limit for the stx2 gene for URRT-PCR was estimated to be 3 c.f.u./PCR with the amplification product having a consistent Tm of 85.2 +/- 0.4 degrees C. This method was tested for the various applications relevant to the different EHEC strains and was useful for the rapid detection of stx2-carrying EHEC strains.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of iron oxide application on improving the volume of eyelashes. Iron oxide, having a negative surface charge in its natural form, was coated with commercial cationic polymers to increase its adhesion. The iron oxides coated with different types and concentrations of these polymers were incorporated into a basic mascara formula to test their volume effects by means of the weight difference of eyelashes.The results indicated that the type and concentration of coating materials affect the surface zeta potential and particle cluster size of iron oxides. The type of cationic polymer, especially, was shown to modify both factors of iron oxide. The obtained results also suggested that the volume effect of mascara increases with a higher positive surface zeta potential and a smaller particle cluster size of the coated iron oxides.

Abstract
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage is a common adjunct to thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) repair. CSF drainage may improve perioperative spinal cord perfusion and thereby decrease the incidence of paraplegia or paraparesis. Complications of CSF drainage may arise. We present a case of cerebral epidural hematoma (EDH), possibly arising from excessive CSF drainage, during thoracoabdominal aortic repair.

Abstract
We retrospectively evaluated eight patients who underwent arthrodesis of the knee using cannulated screws. There were six women and two men, with a mean age of 53 years. The indications for arthrodesis were failed total knee arthroplasty, septic arthritis, tuberculosis, and recurrent persistent infection. Solid union was achieved in all patients at a mean of 6.1 months. One patient required autogenous bone graft for delayed union. One suffered skin necrosis which was treated with skin grafting. The mean limb-length discrepancy was 3.1 cm. On a visual analogue scale, the mean pain score improved from 7.9 to 3.3. According to the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome score quality of life items, the mean score improved from 38.3 pre-operatively to 76.6 at follow-up. Cannulated screws provide a high rate of union in arthrodesis of the knee with minimal complications, patient convenience, and a simple surgical technique.

A novel human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A allele has been identified in the cord blood of a Korean baby. New HLA-A*1135 allele was different from HLA-A*1131 by three nucleotide substitution at codon 142 (ATC-->ACC) and codon 163 (CGG-->ACG), resulting in two amino acid change, Ile 142 Thr and Arg 163 Thr.

Abstract
We report the identification of novel allele HLA-DRB1*1478 that was found during routine high-resolution sequence-based typing of the cord blood unit in Korean population. The DRB1*1478 allele shows two nucleotide differences from DRB1*1463 in exon 2 at nucleotide position 344 (G-->T) and 345 (T-->G), resulting in an amino acid change, Gly86Val.

Abstract
The genetic structure of the Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus) in Japan was studied to understand the events that occurred during its evolution. The left domain of the mitochondrial control region (about 240 bp) was sequenced, defining 27 haplotypes that consisted of 23 haplotypes from 333 bears in Japan and 22 bears in the Asian continent. The network tree of the control region indicated that the Japanese population formed a distinct clade from the continental population. The phylogeographic analysis of the haplotypes indicated that the Shikoku and Kii Hanto populations had diverged during the initial phase from the ancestral population. After the 3 dominant haplotypes were rapidly distributed throughout Japan in the early stage of the population dispersal, the Japanese population diverged into eastern and western populations. Using the entire mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence, divergence time between the Japanese and the Continental populations suggested that the Japanese population might have colonized into Japan through the land bridge from the Korean Peninsula around 500 ka, which is consistent with paleontological evidence. Our finding that bears in western Japan exhibit lower genetic diversity and higher levels of genetic differentiation than bears in eastern Japan provides a vital contribution to conservation policy for these isolated populations.

Abstract
The real-time atomic force microscope for biological sample is a challenging research field. We have demonstrated a real-time atomic force microscope by implementing a mechanical resonator type scanner called by "microscanner" The microscanner was designed to have a resonance frequency in the range of 5-10 kHz and an amplitude of 1-3 microm. The resonant vibration of the microscanner was served as a fast-scan directional motion, and an image acquisition rate of 30 frames/s with 256x256 pixels per frame was achieved. Time-varying sequential images of a poly(ethylene-oxide) sample were taken as a demonstration of potential for excellence in real-time imaging a moving nano-object.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We compared the degree of systemic inflammation and its relation to the angiographic outcomes after drug-eluting stent (DES) implantations. METHODS We implanted a single DES in 79 stable angina patients (50 men; 60.4 (9.5) years of age; sirolimus-eluting stent (SES), n = 38; paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES), n = 41). The high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels were determined before and at 24 hours, 72 hours, and 4 weeks after the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). An angiography and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) were performed. RESULTS The hs-CRP and IL-6 levels at baseline did not differ between the two groups. The hs-CRP increased significantly from baseline at 24 hours and 72 hours after the PCI in both groups and there was a significant increase in the IL-6 level at 24 hours after the PCI in both groups. However, there was no significant difference between the two groups in any of the hs-CRP or IL-6 measurements. At follow-up, the late lumen loss was significantly higher in the PES group than in the SES group (0.57 (0.56) mm vs 0.28 (0.58) mm, respectively, p = 0.020). The neointimal hyperplasia (NIH) volume in the PES group was significantly higher than that in the SES group (23.1 (22.7) vs 3.8 (7.1) mm(3), respectively, p = 0.000). The percentage luminal volume reduction was higher in the PES group than in the SES group (18.9 vs 3.9%, p = 0.002). The absolute values or change in the inflammatory markers did not correlate with the NIH or stent volume reduction. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that the benefits obtained from the SES, which reduce neointimal proliferation, are not probably mediated by the attenuation of the systemic inflammatory markers hs-CRP or IL-6.

Abstract
In the present paper, we describe the mitochondrial genome sequence of the Asiatic black bear (Ursus thibetanus ussuricus) with particular emphasis on the control region (CR), and compared with mitochondrial genomes on molecular relationships among the bears. The mitochondrial genome sequence of U. thibetanus ussuricus was 16,700 bp in size with mostly conserved structures (e.g. 13 protein-coding, two rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes). The CR consisted of several typical conserved domains such as F, E, D, and C boxes, and a conserved sequence block. Nucleotide sequences and the repeated motifs in the CR were different among the bear species, and their copy numbers were also variable according to populations, even within F1 generations of U. thibetanus ussuricus. Comparative analyses showed that the CR D1 region was highly informative for the discrimination of the bear family. These findings suggest that nucleotide sequences of both repeated motifs and CR D1 in the bear family are good markers for species discriminations.

Abstract
A novel micro-PCR-based detection method, termed ultra-rapid real-time PCR, was applied to the development of a rapid detection for Paenibacillus larvae (P. larvae) which is the causative agent of American Foulbrood (AFB). This method was designed to detect the 16S rRNA gene of P. larvae with a micro-scale chip-based real-time PCR system, GenSpector TMC-1000, which has uncommonly fast heating and cooling rates (10 degrees C per second) and small reaction volume (6microl). In the application of ultra-rapid real-time PCR detection to an AFB-infected larva, the minimum detection time was 7 min and 54s total reaction time (30 cycles), including the melting temperature analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this novel detection method is one of the most rapid real-time PCR-based detection tools.
