Effects of hydrocolloids on mechanical properties, viscoelastic and microstructural properties of starch-based modeling clay

The effects of various hydrocolloids (guar gum, xanthan gum, and carboxymethyl cellulose) on the texture, rheology, and microstructural properties of modeling clay prepared with cassava starch were investigated. Notably, incorporation of 3 % guar gum and 4 % xanthan gum into starch-based modeling clay resulted in enhancements of 94.12 % and 77.47 % in cohesiveness, and 64.70 % and 66.20 % in extensibility, respectively. For starch-based modeling clay with added guar gum and xanthan gum, compared to formulations without hydrocolloids, the linear viscoelastic range exceeded 0.04 %, and the frequency dependence of both maximum creep compliance (Jmax) and storage modulus (G') was significantly reduced. This indicates a more stable network structure and enhanced resistance to deformation. Results from Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed that the physical interactions between starch and various hydrocolloids, along with the addition of these hydrocolloids, inhibited the degradation effect of thermomechanical processing on the crystalline structure of starch. With the addition of guar gum, it is observed that a continuous and dense network structure forms within the starch-based modeling clay, and starch particles are distributed uniformly. In conclusion, hydrocolloids enhances the properties of starch-based modeling clay, introducing an innovative solution to the modeling clay sector.

Rare Earth Element Adsorption to Clay Minerals: Mechanistic Insights and Implications for Recovery from Secondary Sources

The energy transition will have significant mineral demands and there is growing interest in recovering critical metals, including rare earth elements (REE), from secondary sources in aqueous and sedimentary environments. However, the role of clays in REE transport and deposition in these settings remains understudied. This work investigated REE adsorption to the clay minerals illite and kaolinite through pH adsorption experiments and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). Clay type, pH, and ionic strength (IS) affected adsorption, with decreased adsorption under acidic pH and elevated IS. Illite had a higher adsorption capacity than kaolinite; however, >95% adsorption was achieved at pH ∼7.5 regardless of IS or clay. These results were used to develop a surface complexation model with the derived binding constants used to predict REE speciation in the presence of competing sorbents. This demonstrated that clays become increasingly important as pH increases, and EXAFS modeling showed that REE can exist as both inner- and outer-sphere complexes. Together, this indicated that clays can be an important control on the transport and enrichment of REE in sedimentary systems. These findings can be applied to identify settings to target for resource extraction or to predict REE transport and fate as a contaminant.

Mesocosm study of PAC-modified clay effects on Karenia brevis cells and toxins, chemical dynamics, and benthic invertebrate physiology

Modified clay compounds are used globally as a method of controlling harmful algal blooms, and their use is currently under consideration to control Karenia brevis blooms in Florida, USA. In 1400 L mesocosm tanks, chemical dynamics and lethal and sublethal impacts of MC II, a polyaluminum chloride (PAC)-modified kaolinite clay, were evaluated over 72 h on a benthic community representative of Sarasota Bay, which included blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), sea urchin (Lytechinus variegatus), and hard clam (Mercenaria campechiensis). In this experiment, MC II was dosed at 0.2 g L-1 to treat bloom-level densities of K. brevis at 1 × 106 cells L-1. Cell removal in MC II-treated tanks was 57% after 8 h and 95% after 48 h. In the water column, brevetoxin analogs BTx-1 and BTx-2 were found to be significantly higher in untreated tanks at 24 and 48 h, while in MC II-treated tanks, BTx-3 was found to be higher at 48 h and BTx-B5 was found to be higher at 24 and 48 h. In MC II floc, we found no significant differences in BTx-1 or BTx-2 between treatments for any time point, while BTx-3 was found to be significantly higher in the MC II-treated tanks at 48 and 72 h, and BTx-B5 was higher in MC II-treated tanks at 24 and 72 h. Among various chemical dynamics observed, it was notable that dissolved phosphorus was consistently significantly lower in MC II tanks after 2 h, and that turbidity in MC II tanks returned to control levels 48 h after treatment. Dissolved inorganic carbon and total seawater alkalinity were significantly reduced in MC II tanks, and partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) was significantly higher in the MC II-only treatment after 2 h. In MC II floc, particulate phosphorus was found to be significantly higher in MC II tanks after 24 h. In animals, lethal and sublethal responses to MC II-treated K. brevis did not differ from untreated K. brevis for either of our three species at any time point, suggesting MC II treatment at this dosage has negligible impacts to these species within 72 h of exposure. These results appear promising in terms of the environmental safety of MC II as a potential bloom control option, and we recommend scaling up MC II experiments to field trials in order to gain deeper understanding of MC II performance and dynamics in natural waters.

A comparative study on the Cs adsorption/desorption and structural changes in different clay minerals

We investigated the structural changes in clay minerals after Cs adsorption and understood their low desorption efficiency using an ion-exchanger. We focused on the role of interlayers in Cs adsorption and desorption in 2:1 clay minerals, namely illite, hydrobiotite, and montmorillonite, using batch experiments and XRD and EXAFS analyses. The adsorption characteristics of the clay minerals were analyzed using cation exchange capacity (CEC), maximum adsorption isotherms (Qmax), and radiocesium interception potential (RIP) experiments. Although illite showed a low CEC value, it exhibited high selectivity for Cs with a relatively high RIP/CEC ratio. The Cs desorption efficiency after treatment with a NaCl ion exchanger was the highest for illite (74.3%), followed by hydrobiotite (45.5%) and montmorillonite (30.3%); thus, Cs adsorbed onto planar sites, rather than on interlayers or frayed edge sites (FESs), is easily desorbed. After NaCl treatment, XRD analysis showed that the low desorption efficiency was due to the collapse of the interlayer-fixed Cs, which tightly narrowed the interlayers' hydrobiotite due to the ion exchange of divalent cations (Mg2+ or Ca2+) into the monovalent cation (Na+). Moreover, EXAFS analysis showed that hydrobiotite formed inner-sphere structures after NaCl desorption, indicating that it was difficult to remove Cs from NaCl desorption due to the collapsed hydrobiotite and montmorillonite interlayers as well as the strong bonding in FESs of illite. In contrast, chelation desorption using oxalic acid effectively dissolved the narrowed interlayers of hydrobiotite (98%) and montmorillonite (85.26%), enhancing the desorption efficiency. Therefore, low desorption efficiency for Cs clays using an ion exchanger was caused by the collapsed interlayer due to the exchange between monovalent cation and divalent cation.

Effects of a Curcumin/Silymarin/Yeast-Based Mycotoxin Detoxifier on Redox Status and Growth Performance of Weaned Piglets under Field Conditions

The aim of this in vivo study was to investigate the effects of a novel mycotoxin detoxifier whose formulation includes clay (bentonite and sepiolite), phytogenic feed additives (curcumin and silymarin) and postbiotics (yeast products) on the health, performance and redox status of weaned piglets under the dietary challenge of fumonisins (FUMs). The study was conducted in duplicate in the course of two independent trials on two different farms. One hundred and fifty (150) weaned piglets per trial farm were allocated into two separate groups: (a) T1 (control group): 75 weaned piglets received FUM-contaminated feed and (b) T2 (experimental group): 75 weaned piglets received FUM-contaminated feed with the mycotoxin-detoxifying agent from the day of weaning (28 days) until 70 days of age. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARSs), protein carbonyls (CARBs) and the overall antioxidant capacity (TAC) were assessed in plasma as indicators of redox status at 45 and 70 days of age. Furthermore, mortality and performance parameters were recorded at 28, 45 and 70 days of age, while histopathological examination was performed at the end of the trial period (day 70). The results of the present study reveal the beneficial effects of supplementing a novel mycotoxin detoxifier in the diets of weaners, including improved redox status, potential hepatoprotective properties and enhanced growth performance.

Recent advances in the application of clay-containing hydrogels for hemostasis and wound healing

INTRODUCTION

Immediate control of bleeding and anti-infection play important roles in wound management. Multiple organ dysfunction syndrome and death may occur if persistent bleeding, hemodynamic instability, and hypoxemia are not addressed. The combination of clay and hydrogel provides a new outlet for wound hemostasis. In this review, the current research progress of hydrogel/clay composite hemostatic agents was reviewed.

This paper summarizes the characteristics of several kinds of clay including kaolinite, montmorillonite, laponite, sepiolite, and palygorskite. The advantages and disadvantages of its application in hemostasis were also summarized. Future directions for the application of hydrogel/clay composite hemostatic agents are presented.

EXPERT OPINION

Clay can activate the endogenous hemostatic pathway by increasing blood cell concentration and promoting plasma absorption to accelerate the hemostasis. Clay is antimicrobial due to the slow release of metal ions and has a rich surface charge with a high affinity for proteins and cells to promote tissue repair. Hydrogels have some properties such as good biocompatibility, strong adhesion, high stretchability, and good self-healing. Despite promising advances, hydrogel/clay composite hemostasis remains a limitation. Therefore, more evidence is needed to further elucidate the risk factors and therapeutic effects of hydrogel/clay in hemostasis and wound healing.

Effect of montmorillonite K10 clay on RNA structure and function

One of the earliest living systems was likely based on RNA ("the RNA world"). Mineral surfaces have been postulated to be an important environment for the prebiotic chemistry of RNA. In addition to adsorbing RNA and thus potentially reducing the chance of parasitic takeover through limited diffusion, minerals have been shown to promote a range of processes related to the emergence of life, including RNA polymerization, peptide bond formation, and self-assembly of vesicles. In addition, self-cleaving ribozymes have been shown to retain activity when adsorbed to the clay mineral montmorillonite. However, simulation studies suggest that adsorption to minerals is likely to interfere with RNA folding and, thus, function. To further evaluate the plausibility of a mineral-adsorbed RNA world, here we studied the effect of the synthetic clay montmorillonite K10 on the malachite green RNA aptamer, including binding of the clay to malachite green and RNA, as well as on the formation of secondary structures in model RNA and DNA oligonucleotides. We evaluated the fluorescence of the aptamer complex, adsorption to the mineral, melting curves, Förster resonance energy transfer interactions, and 1H-NMR signals to study the folding and functionality of these nucleic acids. Our results indicate that while some base pairings are unperturbed, the overall folding and binding of the malachite green aptamer are substantially disrupted by montmorillonite. These findings suggest that minerals would constrain the structures, and possibly the functions, available to an adsorbed RNA world.

Tetracycline adsorption/desorption by raw and activated Tunisian clays

Clay-based adsorbents have applications in environmental remediation, particularly in the removal of emerging pollutants such as antibiotics. Taking that into account, we studied the adsorption/desorption process of tetracycline (TC) using three raw and acid- or base-activated clays (AM, HJ1 and HJ2) collected, respectively, from Aleg (Mazzouna), El Haria (Jebess, Maknessy), and Chouabine (Jebess, Maknessy) formations, located in the Maknessy-Mazzouna basin, center-western of Tunisia. The main physicochemical properties of the clays were determined using standard procedures, where the studied clays presented a basic pH (8.39-9.08) and a high electrical conductivity (446-495 dS m-1). Their organic matter contents were also high (14-20%), as well as the values of the effective cation exchange capacity (80.65-97.45 cmolckg-1). In the exchange complex, the predominant cations were Na and Ca, in the case of clays HJ1 and AM, while Mg and Ca were dominant in the HJ2 clay. The sorption experimental setup consisted in performing batch tests, using 0.5 g of each clay sample, adding the selected TC concentrations, then carrying out quantification of the antibiotic by means of HPL-UV equipment. Raw clays showed high adsorption potential for TC (close to 100%) and very low desorption (generally less than 5%). This high adsorption capacity was also present in the clays after being activated with acid or base, allowing them to adsorb TC in a rather irreversible way for a wide range of pH (3.3-10) and electrical conductivity values (3.03-495 dS m-1). Adsorption experimental data were studied as regards their fitting to the Freundlich, Langmuir, Linear and Sips isotherms, being the Sips model the most appropriate to explain the adsorption of TC in these clays (natural or activated). These results could help to improve the overall knowledge on the application of new low-cost methods, using clay based adsorbents, to reduce risks due to emerging pollutants (and specifically TC) affecting the environment.

Sorption of oxytetracycline to microsized colloids under concentrated salt solution: A perspective on terrestrial-to-ocean transfer of antibiotics

The sorption of antibiotics on soil minerals and their cotransport have been widely studied for the past few years; however, these processes in concentrated salt solutions (estuary-like conditions) are not fully understood. This study aims to determine the possible sorption of oxytetracycline (OTC) on various natural and synthesized microsized minerals (including haematite, goethite, kaolinite, bentonite, lateritic, kaolinitic and illitic soil clays) under conditions mimicking pure, fresh, brackish and sea waters. The sorption of OTC was found to decrease in surface charge (herein zeta potential), hence altering the colloidal properties of the materials used. The sorption capacities of soil clays for OTC follow the inequality illitic soil clay > kaolinitic soil clay > lateritic soil clay, and the sorption capacities were found to decrease at higher salt concentrations. Seawater can intensify the release of the sorbed OTC from soil clay surfaces while favouring the coaggregation of the remaining OTC with soil clays. This implies that the long-range transport of OTC or other similar antibiotics can be governed by the mineralogical composition/properties of the suspended particles. More importantly, increasing salt concentrations in estuaries may form a chemical barrier at which limited amounts of OTC/antibiotics can pass through, while the remaining OTC/antibiotics can be favoured to aggregate simultaneously with suspended mineral particles.

Magnetized vermiculite as a tool for the treatment of produced water generated by oil companies: Effects on aquatic organisms before and after treatment

Produced water (PW) generated by oil companies is a highly impacting waste that contains chemicals such as metals and organic and inorganic compounds. Given its polluting potential, PW requires effective treatment before being discharged into the environment. Conventional treatments have limited efficiency in removing PW toxicity, so alternative approaches must be developed and standardized. In this context, treatment with adsorbent materials like magnetized vermiculite (VMT-mag) is highlighted. This work aimed to evaluate the efficiency of treatment with VMT-mag in reducing PW toxicity to aquatic biota. For this purpose, three aquatic species (the midge Chironomus riparius, the planarian Girardia tigrina, and the crustacean Daphnia magna) were exposed to untreated PW and to PW treated with VMT-mag at laboratory conditions. The assessed endpoints included mortality, growth, emergence, and developmental time of C. riparius; mortality, locomotion, feeding, and head regeneration of G. tigrina; and intrinsic population growth rate (r) and reproductive output of D. magna. The results showed that all the species exposed to raw PW were impaired: C. riparius had delayed development, G. tigrina had reduced locomotor activity and delayed head regeneration, and D. magna had reduced reproduction and delayed intrinsic population growth rate (r). Most of the analyzed parameters showed that treatment with VMT-mag diminished PW toxicity. Therefore, using VMT-mag to treat PW may be the key to reducing the PW effects on aquatic organisms.

Layered Clay Minerals in Cancer Therapy: Recent Progress and Prospects

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases, and current treatment regimens suffer from limited efficacy, nonspecific toxicity, and chemoresistance. With the advantages of good biocompatibility, large specific surface area, excellent cation exchange capacity, and easy availability, clay minerals have been receiving ever-increasing interests in cancer treatment. They can act as carriers to reduce the toxic side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs, and some of their own properties can kill cancer cells, etc. Compared with other morphologies clays, layered clay minerals (LCM) have attracted more and more attention due to adjustable interlayer spacing, easier ion exchange, and stronger adsorption capacity. In this review, the structure, classification, physicochemical properties, and functionalization methods of LCM are summarized. The state-of-the-art progress of LCM in antitumor therapy is systematically described, with emphasis on the application of montmorillonite, kaolinite, and vermiculite. Furthermore, the property-function relationships of LCM are comprehensively illustrated to reveal the design principles of clay-based antitumor systems. Finally, foreseeable challenges and outlook in this field are discussed.

Adsorption of the hydrophobic organic pollutant hexachlorobenzene to phyllosilicate minerals

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a representative of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOC), belongs to the group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that can have harmful effects on humans and other biota. Sorption processes in soils and sediments largely determine the fate of HCB and the risks arising from the compound in the environment. In this context, especially HOC-organic matter interactions are intensively studied, whereas knowledge of HOC adsorption to mineral phases (e.g., clay minerals) is comparatively limited. In this work, we performed batch adsorption experiments of HCB on a set of twelve phyllosilicate mineral sorbents that comprised several smectites, kaolinite, hectorite, chlorite, vermiculite, and illite. The effect of charge and size of exchangeable cations on HCB adsorption was studied using the source clay montmorillonite STx-1b after treatment with nine types of alkali (M+: Li, K, Na, Rb, Cs) and alkaline earth metal cations (M2+: Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba). Molecular modeling simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reveal the effect of different cations on the adsorption energy in a selected HCB-clay mineral system accompanied this study. Results for HCB adsorption to minerals showed a large variation of solid-liquid adsorption constants Kd over four orders of magnitude (log Kd 0.9-3.3). Experiments with cation-modified montmorillonite resulted in increasing HCB adsorption with decreasing hydrated radii of exchangeable cations (log Kd 1.3-3.8 for M+ and 1.3-1.4 for M2+). DFT calculations predicted (gas phase) adsorption energies (- 76 to - 24 kJ mol-1 for M+ and - 96 to - 71 kJ mol-1 for M2+) showing a good correlation with Kd values for M2+-modified montmorillonite, whereas a discrepancy was observed for M+-modified montmorillonite. Supported by further calculations, this indicated that the solvent effect plays a relevant role in the adsorption process. Our results provide insight into the influence of minerals on HOC adsorption using HCB as an example and support the relevance of minerals for the environmental fate of HOCs such as for long-term source/sink phenomena in soils and sediments.

The important role of surface hydroxyl groups in aluminum activation during phyllosilicate mineral acidification

Phyllosilicate minerals are the important components in soils and an important source of activated aluminum (Al) during soil acidification. However, the mechanisms for Al activation in phyllosilicate minerals were not understood well. In this paper, the effect of phyllosilicate surface hydroxyl groups on Al activation during acidification was studied after the minerals were modified with inorganic and organic materials. After modification of kaolinite, montmorillonite, and illite with fulvic acid (FA-), iron oxide (Fe-), Fe combined with FA (Fe-FA-), and siloxane (Si-O-), the interlayer spaces were altered. For instance, when modified with Fe, Fe entered the interlayer spaces of kaolinite and montmorillonite and changed the interlayer spaces of both minerals but did not affect that of illite. Also, the other modification methods had significant effects on the interlayer space of montmorillonite but not on kaolinite and illite. It was observed that all the modification strategies inhibited Al activation during acidification by reducing the number of hydroxyl groups on the mineral surfaces and inhibiting protonation reactions between H⁺ and hydroxyl groups. Nevertheless, the inhibition effect varies with the type of phyllosilicate mineral. For kaolinite (Kao), the inhibition effect of the different modification methods on Al activation during acidification followed: Fe-FA-Kao > Fe-Kao > Si-O-Kao > FA-Kao. Additionally, for montmorillonite (Mon), the inhibition effect was in the order: Si-O-Mon > Fe-Mon > Fe-FA-Mon > FA-Mon, while for illite, it was: Fe-illite > Si-O-illite ≈ Fe-FA-illite > FA-illite. Thus, the hydroxyl groups on the surfaces and edges of phyllosilicate minerals play an important role in the activation of Al from the mineral structure. Also, the protonation of hydroxyl groups may be the first step during Al activation in these minerals. The results of this study can serve as a reference for the development of new technologies to inhibit soil acidification and Al activation.

Study on the characteristics of zeolite-promoted thermal decomposition of H2O2 for efficient NO oxidation

The H₂O₂ evaporation rate directly affected the oxidation of NO by H₂O₂. Green zeolite and synthetic mordenite were selected to promote H₂O₂ thermal decomposition and NO oxidation. The effects of different zeolites, evaporation conditions, temperatures, and reactant concentrations on the NO oxidation ratio were explored. The promotion mechanism of zeolite on NO oxidation by H₂O₂ thermal decomposition was explained. The results show that the zeolite surface can significantly accelerate the H₂O₂ evaporation rate to obtain a high NO oxidation ratio. The hydrophilicity and rich pore structure of zeolite enable the rapid diffusion and evaporation of droplets on the zeolite surface. Compared with the green zeolite with the mesoporous structure, the synthetic mordenite with the hierarchical pore structure has a more obvious promotion effect on the NO oxidation by H₂O₂ thermal decomposition. The reason is that the synthetic mordenite contains micropores, resulting in a larger specific surface area, and the mesoporous structure is conducive to the mass transfer and diffusion of H₂O₂ on its surface. The product of NO oxidation is mainly NO₂, which proves that ·OH plays a major role in the process.

Multi-cation exchanges involved in cesium and potassium sorption mechanisms on vermiculite and micaceous structures

Vermiculite and micaceous minerals are relevant Cs⁺ sorbents in soils and sediments. To understand the bioavailability of Cs⁺ in soils resulting from multi-cation exchanges, sorption of Cs⁺ onto clay minerals was performed in batch experiments with solutions containing Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, and K⁺. A sequence between a vermiculite and various micaceous structures has been carried out by conditioning a vermiculite at various amounts of K. Competing cation exchanges were investigated as function of Cs⁺ concentration. The contribution of K⁺ on trace Cs⁺ desorption is probed by applying different concentrations of K⁺ on Cs-doped vermiculite and micaceous structures. Cs sorption isotherms at chemical equilibrium were combined with elemental mass balances in solution and structural analyses. Cs⁺ replaces easily Mg²⁺  > Ca²⁺ and competes scarcely with K⁺. Cs⁺ is strongly adsorbed on the various matrix, and a K/Cs ratio of about a thousand is required to remobilize Cs⁺. Cs⁺ is exchangeable as long as the clay interlayer space remains open to Ca²⁺. However, an excess of K⁺, as well as Cs⁺, in solution leads to the collapse of the interlayer spaces that locks the Cs into the structure. Once K⁺ and/or Cs⁺ collapse the interlayer space, the external sorption sites are then particularly involved in Cs sorption. Subsequently, Cs⁺ preferentially exchanges with Ca²⁺ rather than Mg²⁺. Mg²⁺ is extruded from the interlayer space by Cs⁺ and K⁺ adsorption, excluded from short interlayer space and replaced by Ca²⁺ as Cs⁺ desorbs.

Fibrous Clays in Dermopharmaceutical and Cosmetic Applications: Traditional and Emerging Perspectives

Functionalization of natural clay minerals for high value-added pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications receives significant research attention worldwide attributable to a rising demand and ongoing search for green, efficient, economically sustainable and ecofriendly geomaterials. Fibrous clays, i.e. palygorskite and sepiolite, are naturally-occurring hydrated magnesium aluminum silicate clay minerals with 2:1 layer-chain microstructure and one-dimensional nanofibrous morphology. Due to their unique structural, textural and compatibility features, over the past decade, fibrous clays and their organic modified derivatives are increasingly used in the dermopharmaceutical and cosmetic fields as excipients, active agents or nanocarriers to develop novel skin delivery systems or to modify drug release profile for enhanced health effects. This comprehensive review presents the up-to-date information on fibrous clays used in topically-applied products for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes with the focus on their performance-related structural characteristics and the underlying mechanisms. The recent advancement of fibrous clay-based skin delivery systems was summarized in wide range of applications including pelotherapy, wound healing, antimicrobial action, coloration and UV protection. An overview of the commonly used topically-applied dosage forms (powders, hydrogels, films, peloids and Pickering emulsion) as well as the toxicological aspects was also included, which might provide guidance to the design and development of fibrous clay-based skin delivery systems.

Sorption of Bisphenol A as Model for Sorption Ability of Organoclays

The arrangement of bisphenol A molecules into organoclays and their interactions with the intercalated surfactant were studied. The organoclays were prepared via solid-state intercalation of four cationic surfactants, such as dodecyltrimethyl-, tetradecyltrimethyl-, hexadecyltrimethyl-, and didodecyldimethyl-ammonium, as bromide salts, at different loading levels into the interlayers of two natural clays. The natural clays, the prepared organoclays, and the spent organoclays were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. X-ray powder diffraction measurements showed successive interlayer expansions of the d₀₀₁ basal spacing due to the intercalation of the cationic surfactants and the bisphenol A sorption. The increased d₀₀₁ basal spacing of the organoclays after bisphenol A sorption indicates that the molecules are integrated between the alkyl chains of the surfactant in the organoclays interlayers. Infrared spectroscopy was employed to probe the intercalation of the cationic surfactants and the sorbed bisphenol A. New characteristic bands attributed to the bisphenol A phenol rings appear in the range 1518-1613 cm^-1 on the infrared spectra of the spent organoclays, proving the presence of bisphenol A in the hydrophobic interlayers. Scanning electron microscopy of the organoclays before and after BPA sorption shows that their morphology becomes fluffy and that the presence of the organic molecules expands the clay structure.

A simple empirical model for phenanthrene adsorption on soil clay minerals

Soil clay minerals are effective substrate adsorbents of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in natural soil. The adsorbed PAHs result in long-term contamination of soils. In this paper, a typical PAH phenanthrene (Phe) and nine high purity clay minerals are selected as representative PAH pollutants and adsorbents, respectively. A series of experiments have been conducted to disclose the relationship between the Phe adsorption effect of these clay minerals and their physical properties, including specific surface area (SSA), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and contact angle (CA). Molecular simulation methods are performed to explore the mechanism of clay mineral structure on Phe adsorption at the molecular level. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggests that the adsorption of Phe on clay minerals is mainly due to the van der Waals effect. The strength of the O-H-π effect is greater than that of the hydrophobic effect of Phe adsorption. Molecular dynamic (MD) simulations imply that the hydration effect of cations hinders the Phe hydrophobic adsorption by occupying the adsorption sites. Based on the mechanism explored, a simple empirical model is proposed, and the adsorption distribution coefficient K_d of clay mineral and water phases can be precisely predicted by the three physical properties of clay minerals, without rigorous quantitative analysis of soil clay minerals.

Nanostructured and Advanced Designs from Biomass and Mineral Residues: Multifunctional Biopolymer Hydrogels and Hybrid Films Reinforced with Exfoliated Mica Nanosheets

Transforming potential waste materials into high-value-added sustainable materials with advanced properties is one of the key targets of the emerging green circular economy. Natural mica (muscovite) is abundant in the mining industry, which is commonly regarded as a byproduct and gangue mineral flowing to waste rock and mine tailings. Similarly, chitin is the second-most abundant biomass resource on Earth after cellulose, extracted as a byproduct from the exoskeleton of crustaceans, fungal mycelia, and mushroom wastes. In this study, exfoliated mica nanosheets were individualized using a mechanochemical process and incorporated into regenerated chitin matrix through an alkali dissolution system (KOH/urea) to result in a multifunctional, hybrid hydrogel, and film design. The hydrogels displayed a hierarchical and open nanoporous structure comprising an enhanced, load-bearing double-cross-linked polymeric chitin network strengthened by mica nanosheets possessing high stiffness after high-temperature curing, while the hybrid films (HFs) exhibited favorable UV-shielding properties, optical transparency, and dielectric properties. These hybrid designs derived from industrial residues pave the way toward sustainable applications for many future purposes, such as wearable devices and tissue engineering/drug delivery.

Macrocyclic Peptide-Conjugated Tip for Fast and Selective Molecular Recognition Imaging by High-Speed Atomic Force Microscopy

Fast and selective recognition of molecules at the nanometer scale without labeling is a much desired but still challenging goal to achieve. Here, we show the use of high-speed atomic force microscopy (HS-AFM) for real-time and real-space recognition of unlabeled membrane receptors using tips conjugated with small synthetic macrocyclic peptides. The single-molecule recognition method is validated by experiments on the human hepatocyte growth factor receptor (hMET), which selectively binds to the macrocyclic peptide aMD4. By testing and comparing aMD4 synthesized with linkers of different lengths and rigidities, we maximize the interaction between the functionalized tip and hMET added to both a mica surface and supported lipid bilayers. Phase contrast imaging by HS-AFM enables us to discriminate nonlabeled hMET against the murine MET homologue, which does not bind to aMD4. Moreover, using ligands and linkers of small size, we achieve minimal deterioration of the spatial resolution in simultaneous topographic imaging. The versatility of macrocyclic peptides in detecting unlimited types of membrane receptors with high selectivity and the fast imaging by HS-AFM broaden the range of future applications of this method for molecular recognition without labeling.

Self-Assembly of DNA molecules in magnetic Fields

In this work, a rich variety of self-assembled DNA patterns were obtained in the magnetic field. Herein, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was utilized to investigate the effects of the concentration of DNA solution, intensity and direction of magnetic field and modification of mica surface by different cations on the self-assembly of DNA molecules. It was found that owning to the change of the DNA concentration, even under the same magnetic field, the DNA self-assembly results were different. Thein situtest results showed that the DNA self-assembly in an magnetic field was more likely to occur in liquid phase than in gas phase. In addition, whether in a horizontal or vertical magnetic field, a single stretched dsDNA was obtained in a certain DNA concentration and magnetic field intensity. Besides, the modification of cations on the mica surface significantly increased the force between the DNA molecules and mica surface, and further changed the self-assembly of DNA molecules under the action of magnetic field.

Deposition of Polymer Particles with Fibrinogen Corona at Abiotic Surfaces under Flow Conditions

The deposition kinetics of polymer particles with fibrinogen molecule coronas at bare and poly-L-lysine (PLL) modified mica was studied using the microfluid impinging-jet cell. Basic physicochemical characteristics of fibrinogen and the particles were acquired using dynamic light scattering and the electrophoretic mobility methods, whereas the zeta potential of the substrates was determined using streaming potential measurements. Subsequently, an efficient method for the preparation of the particles with coronas, characterized by a controlled fibrinogen coverage, was developed. This enabled us to carry out measurements, which confirmed that the deposition kinetics of the particles at mica vanished at pH above 5. In contrast, the particle deposition of PLL modified mica was at maximum for pH above 5. It was shown that the deposition kinetics could be adequately analyzed in terms of the mean-field approach, analogously to the ordinary colloid particle behavior. This contrasts the fibrinogen molecule behavior, which efficiently adsorbs at negatively charged substrates for the entire range pHs up to 9.7. These results have practical significance for conducting label-free immunoassays governed by the specific antigen/antibody interactions.

Magnesium-Free Immobilization of DNA Origami Nanostructures at Mica Surfaces for Atomic Force Microscopy

DNA origami nanostructures (DONs) are promising substrates for the single-molecule investigation of biomolecular reactions and dynamics by in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). For this, they are typically immobilized on mica substrates by adding millimolar concentrations of Mg2+ ions to the sample solution, which enable the adsorption of the negatively charged DONs at the like-charged mica surface. These non-physiological Mg2+ concentrations, however, present a serious limitation in such experiments as they may interfere with the reactions and processes under investigation. Therefore, we here evaluate three approaches to efficiently immobilize DONs at mica surfaces under essentially Mg2+-free conditions. These approaches rely on the pre-adsorption of different multivalent cations, i.e., Ni2+, poly-l-lysine (PLL), and spermidine (Spdn). DON adsorption is studied in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and pure water. In general, Ni2+ shows the worst performance with heavily deformed DONs. For 2D DON triangles, adsorption at PLL- and in particular Spdn-modified mica may outperform even Mg2+-mediated adsorption in terms of surface coverage, depending on the employed solution. For 3D six-helix bundles, less pronounced differences between the individual strategies are observed. Our results provide some general guidance for the immobilization of DONs at mica surfaces under Mg2+-free conditions and may aid future in situ AFM studies.

Genesis and development processes of fractures in granite: Petrographic indicators of hydrothermal alteration

Biotites occur with varying degrees of alteration within a granite. This study analyzes the relationships among alteration indicators, areal microvoid fractions in chloritized biotite, and macroscopic fracture frequencies in the Toki granite, central Japan, to establish the genesis and development processes of fractures in granite. Appropriate characterizations for the frequency distribution of macroscopic fractures in granite can assist in understanding potential hydrogeological applications, which contributes to safety evaluations for geological disposal and storage. Borehole 06MI03, drilled to a depth of 191 m, was used to obtain samples for the analysis. In total, 24 samples that depicted variations in the macroscopic fracture frequency were selected. Petrographic alteration indicators using biotite chloritization as innovative methods are proposed to evaluate the extent of hydrothermal alteration and fracture frequency within granites. The alteration indicators are defined as the ratio between the alteration product area and the original mineral area. Furthermore, the volume of microscopic fractures and micropores in the mineral was quantitatively characterized by the areal fraction of microvoids in minerals through image analysis. Samples with high macroscopic fracture frequencies correspond to a high number of areal microvoid fractions and large alteration indicators. Microvoids, which are the source of macroscopic fractures, occurred at temperatures between 350 and 780°C and can be evaluated by intrinsic factors, such as alteration indicators. Subsequent faulting and unloading (extrinsic factors) developed microvoids into macroscopic fractures. Intrinsic factors are used to evaluate the source of macroscopic fractures, and therefore contribute to the characterization of present and future distributions of macroscopic fracture frequencies.

Antibacterial activity of Zn-loaded Cuban zeolite against Helicobacter pylori in comparison to its Na-loaded and unmodified counterparts

Helicobacter pylori can be found in the stomach of about half of the humans, and a large population can be associated with serious diseases. To survive in the stomach H. pylori increases the pH locally by producing ammonia which binds to H⁺ becoming ammonium. This work investigated the effects on the in-vitro growth of H. pylori of a natural cation-exchanger mainly composed (≈70%) of clinoptilolite and mordenite. The zeolitized material from Cuba was evaluated in its original form (M), as well as in its Na- (M-Na) and Zn-exchanged (M-Zn) counterparts. In the preliminary agar cup diffusion test, H. pylori revealed susceptibility only to M-Zn, with a direct relationship between concentration and width of inhibition halo. Further experiments evidenced that bacterium replication increases when ammonium is supplied to the growth medium and decreases when zeolites subtract NH₄⁺ via ion exchange. Due to the multi-cationic population of its zeolites M was not effective enough in removing ammonium and, in the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test, allowed bacterial growth even at a concentration of 50 mg/mL. Inhibition was achieved with M-Na because it contained sodium zeolites capable of maximizing NH₄⁺ subtraction, although the MIC was high (30 mg/mL). M-Zn evidenced a more effective inhibitory capacity, with a MIC of 4 mg/mL. Zinc has antimicrobial properties and H. pylori growth was affected by Zn²⁺ released from clinoptilolite and mordenite. These zeolites, being more selective towards NH₄⁺ than Zn²⁺, can also subtract ammonium to the bacterium, thus enhancing the efficacy of M-Zn.

Silicon-containing water intake confers antioxidant effect, gastrointestinal protection, and gut microbiota modulation in the rodents

We explored the effects of silicon-containing water (BT) intake on gastrointestinal function and gut microbiota. BT was obtained by pressuring tap water through silicon minerals (mullite, Al₆Si₂O₁₃) column. BT decreased H₂O₂ chemiluminescence counts, indicating its antioxidant activity. Four weeks of BT drinking increased H₂O₂ scavenging activity and glutathione peroxidase activity of plasma. BT drinking did not affect the body weight but significantly reduced the weight of feces and gastrointestinal motility. BT drinking significantly suppressed pylorus ligation enhanced gastric juice secretion, gastric reactive oxygen species amount, erythrocyte extravasation, IL-1β production by infiltrating leukocyte, and lipid peroxidation within gastric mucosa. Data from 16S rRNA sequencing revealed BT drinking significantly increased beneficial flora including Ruminococcaceae UCG-005, Prevotellaceae NK3B31, Weissella paramesenteroides, Lactobacillus reuteri, and Lactobacillus murinus and decreased harmful flora including Mucispirillum, Rodentibacter, and Staphylococcus aureus. This study pioneerly provided scientific evidences for the potential effects of water-soluble forms of silicon intake on antioxidant activity, gastrointestinal function, and gut microbiota modulation.

Fluoride release from two types of fluoride-containing orthodontic adhesives: Conventional versus resin-modified glass ionomer cements-An in vitro study

INTRODUCTION

Development of white spot lesions (WSLs) during orthodontic treatment is a common risk factor. Fixation of the orthodontic appliances with glass ionomer cements could reduce the prevalence of WSL's due to their fluoride release capacities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences of fluoride release properties from resin-modified and conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs).

METHODS

The resin-modified GICs Fuji ORTHO LC (GC Orthodontics), Meron Plus QM (VOCO), as well as the conventional GICs Fuji ORTHO (GC Orthodontics), Meron (VOCO) and Ketac Cem Easymix (3M ESPE) were tested in this study. The different types of GICs were applied to hydroxyapatite discs according to the manufacturer's instructions and stored in a solution of TISAB III (Total Ionic Strength Adjustment Buffer III) and fluoride-free water at 37°C. Fluoride measurements were made after 5 minutes, 2 hours, 24 hours, 14 days, 28 days, 2 months, 3 months and 6 months. One factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the overall comparison of the cumulative fluoride release (from measurement times of 5 minutes to 6 months) between the different materials with the overall level of significance set to 0.05. Tukey's post hoc test was used for post hoc pairwise comparisons in the cumulative fluoride release between the different materials.

RESULTS

The cumulative fluoride release (mean ± sd) in descending order was: Fuji ORTHO LC (221.7 ± 10.29 ppm), Fuji ORTHO (191.5 ± 15.03 ppm), Meron Plus QM (173.0 ± 5.89 ppm), Meron (161.3 ± 7.84 ppm) and Ketac Cem Easymix (154.6 ± 6.09 ppm) within 6 months. Analysis of variance detected a significant difference in the cumulative fluoride release between at least two of the materials (rounded p-value < 0.001). Pairwise analysis with Tukey's post hoc test showed a significant difference in the cumulative fluoride release for all the comparisons except M and MPQM (p = 0.061) and KCE and M (p = 0.517).

CONCLUSION

Fluoride ions were released cumulatively over the entire test period for all products. When comparing the two products from the same company (Fuji ORTHO LC vs. Fuji ORTHO from GC Orthodontics Europe GmbH and Meron Plus QM vs. Meron from VOCO GmbH, Mannheim, Germany), it can be said that the resin-modified GICs have a higher release than conventional GICs. The highest individual fluoride release of all GICs was at 24 hours. A general statement, whether resin-modified or conventional GICs have a higher release of fluoride cannot be made.

Capturing functional two-dimensional nanosheets from sandwich-structure vermiculite for cancer theranostics

Clay-based nanomaterials, especially 2:1 aluminosilicates such as vermiculite, biotite, and illite, have demonstrated great potential in various fields. However, their characteristic sandwiched structures and the lack of effective methods to exfoliate two-dimensional (2D) functional core layers (FCLs) greatly limit their future applications. Herein, we present a universal wet-chemical exfoliation method based on alkali etching that can intelligently "capture" the ultrathin and biocompatible FCLs (MgO and Fe2O3) sandwiched between two identical tetrahedral layers (SiO2 and Al2O3) from vermiculite. Without the sandwich structures that shielded their active sites, the obtained FCL nanosheets (NSs) exhibit a tunable and appropriate electron band structure (with the bandgap decreased from 2.0 eV to 1.4 eV), a conductive band that increased from -0.4 eV to -0.6 eV, and excellent light response characteristics. The great properties of 2D FCL NSs endow them with exciting potential in diverse applications including energy, photocatalysis, and biomedical engineering. This study specifically highlights their application in cancer theranostics as an example, potentially serving as a prelude to future extensive studies of 2D FCL NSs.

Ultrasmall, Bright, and Photostable Fluorescent Core-Shell Aluminosilicate Nanoparticles for Live-Cell Optical Super-Resolution Microscopy

Stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) is an optical super-resolution microscopy (SRM) technique that traditionally requires toxic and non-physiological imaging buffers and setups that are not conducive to live-cell studies. It is observed that ultrasmall (<10 nm) fluorescent core-shell aluminosilicate nanoparticles (aC' dots) covalently encapsulating organic fluorophores enable STORM with a single excitation source and in a regular (non-toxic) imaging buffer. It is shown that fourfold coordinated aluminum is responsible for dye blinking, likely via photoinduced redox processes. It is demonstrated that this phenomenon is observed across different dye families leading to probes brighter and more photostable than the parent free dyes. Functionalization of aC' dots with antibodies allows targeted fixed cell STORM imaging. Finally, aC' dots enable live-cell STORM imaging providing quantitative measures of the size of intracellular vesicles and the number of particles per vesicle. The results suggest the emergence of a powerful ultrasmall, bright, and photostable optical SRM particle platform with characteristics relevant to clinical translation for the quantitative assessment of cellular structures and processes from live-cell imaging.

Supercritical CO2 Extraction of Palladium Oxide from an Aluminosilicate-Supported Catalyst Enhanced by a Combination of Complexing Polymers and Piperidine

Precious metals, in particular Pd, have a wide range of applications in industry. Due to their scarcity, precious metals have to be recycled, preferably with green and energy-saving recycling processes. In this article, palladium extraction from an aluminosilicate-supported catalyst, containing about 2 wt% (weight%) of Pd (100% PdO), with supercritical CO₂ (scCO₂) assisted by complexing polymers is described. Two polymers, p(FDA)SH homopolymer and p(FDA-co-DPPS) copolymer (FDA: 1,1,2,2-tetrahydroperfluorodecyl acrylate; DPPS: 4-(diphenylphosphino)styrene), were tested with regards to their ability to extract palladium. Both polymers showed relatively low extraction conversions of approximately 18% and 30%, respectively. However, the addition of piperidine as activator for p(FDA-co-DPPS) allowed for an increase in the extraction conversion of up to 60%.

Physico-Chemical Characterization and Antimicrobial Properties of Hybrid Film Based on Saponite and Phloxine B

This research was aimed at the preparation of a hybrid film based on a layered silicate saponite (Sap) with the immobilized photosensitizer phloxine B (PhB). Sap was selected because of its high cation exchange capacity, ability to exfoliate into nanolayers, and to modify different surfaces. The X-ray diffraction of the films confirmed the intercalation of both the surfactant and PhB molecules in the Sap film. The photosensitizer retained its photoactivity in the hybrid films, as shown by fluorescence spectra measurements. The water contact angles and the measurement of surface free energy demonstrated the hydrophilic nature of the hybrid films. Antimicrobial effectiveness, assessed by the photodynamic inactivation on hybrid films, was tested against a standard strain and against methicillin-resistant bacteria of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). One group of samples was irradiated (green LED light; 2.5 h) and compared to nonirradiated ones. S. aureus strains manifested a reduction in growth from 1-log10 to over 3-log10 compared to the control samples with Sap only, and defects in S. aureus cells were proven by scanning electron microscopy. The results proved the optimal photo-physical properties and anti-MRSA potential of this newly designed hybrid system that reflects recent progress in the modification of surfaces for various medical applications.

Efficient Aflatoxin B1 Sequestration by Yeast Cell Wall Extract and Hydrated Sodium Calcium Aluminosilicate Evaluated Using a Multimodal In-Vitro and Ex-Vivo Methodology

In this work, adsorption of the carcinogenic mycotoxin aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) by two sequestrants-a yeast cell wall-based adsorbent (YCW) and a hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate (HSCAS)-was studied across four laboratory models: (1) an in vitro model from a reference method was employed to quantify the sorption capabilities of both sequestrants under buffer conditions at two pH values using liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (LC-FLD); (2) in a second in vitro model, the influence of the upper gastrointestinal environment on the mycotoxin sorption capacity of the same two sequestrants was studied using a chronic AFB1 level commonly encountered in the field (10 µg/L and in the presence of feed); (3) the third model used a novel ex vivo approach to measure the absorption of 3H-labelled AFB1 in the intestinal tissue and the ability of the sequestrants to offset this process; and (4) a second previously developed ex vivo model readapted to AFB1 was used to measure the transfer of 3H-labelled AFB1 through live intestinal tissue, and the influence of sequestrants on its bioavailability by means of an Ussing chamber system. Despite some sorption effects caused by the feed itself studied in the second model, both in vitro models established that the adsorption capacity of both YCW and HSCAS is promoted at a low acidic pH. Ex vivo Models 3 and 4 showed that the same tested material formed a protective barrier on the epithelial mucosa and that they significantly reduced the transfer of AFB1 through live intestinal tissue. The results indicate that, by reducing the transmembrane transfer rate and reducing over 60% of the concentration of free AFB1, both products are able to significantly limit the bioavailability of AFB1. Moreover, there were limited differences between YCW and HSCAS in their sorption capacities. The inclusion of YCW in the dietary ration could have a positive influence in reducing AFB1's physiological bioavailability.

Towards designing reactive glasses for alkali activation: Understanding the origins of alkaline reactivity of Na-Mg aluminosilicate glasses

Alkali-activated materials (AAMs), sometimes called geopolymers, are eco-friendly cementitious materials with reduced carbon emissions when compared to ordinary Portland cement. However, the availability of most precursors used for AAM production may decline in the future because of changes in industrial sectors. Thus, new precursors must be developed. Recently there has been increased interest in synthetic glass precursors. One major concern with using synthetic glasses is ensuring that they react sufficiently under alkaline conditions. Reactivity is a necessary, although not sufficient, requirement for a suitable precursor for AAMs. This work involves the synthesis, characterization, and estimation of alkaline reactivity of Na-Mg aluminosilicate glasses. Structural characterization showed that replacing Na with Mg led to more depolymerization. Alkaline reactivity studies indicated that, as Mg replaced Na, reactivity of glasses increased at first, reached an optimal value, and then declined. This trend in reactivity could not be explained by the conventional parameters used for estimating glass reactivity: the non-bridging oxygen fraction (which predicts similar reactivity for all glasses) and optical basicity (which predicts a decrease in reactivity with an increase in Mg replacement). The reactivity of the studied glasses was found to depend on two main factors: depolymerization (as indicated by structural characterization) and optical basicity. Depolymerization dominated initially, which led to an increase in reactivity, while the effect of optical basicity dominated later, leading to a decrease in reactivity. Hence, while designing reactive synthetic glasses for alkali activation, structural study of glasses should be given due consideration in addition to the conventional factors.

Antioxidant Property of the Egyptian Propolis Extract Versus Aluminum Silicate Intoxication on a Rat's Lung: Histopathological Studies

In this study, we evaluated the inflammatory responses induced by aluminum silicate (AS) cytotoxicity in rat lungs. The prophylactic effect of propolis extract was evaluated in 60 adult male albino rats. The rats were divided into six groups: (1) a normal, healthy control group; (2) a normal group fed with 200 mL of propolis extract/Kg; (3) a low-dose positive control group injected with 5 mg/kg of AS; (4) a treated group given propolis and a low dose of AS; (5) a high-dose positive control group injected with 20 mg/kg of AS; and (6) a treated group given propolis with a high-dose of AS. At the end of the two-month experiment, the rats’ lungs were removed. For each pair of lungs, one portion was subjected to biochemical analysis and the other underwent hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining in order to study its histology. The rats that received AS doses displayed significant disorders in their antioxidant contents as well as in their enzymatic activities and their histopathological structures revealed severe damage to their lung tissues. Upon the rats being treated with propolis, the enzymatic and antioxidant contents improved and partial improvements in the lung structures appeared, including minimized congestion, a reduced hemorrhage of blood vessels and preserved bronchioles, alveolar ducts, and alveoli. The prophylactic effectiveness of propolis extract on the cytotoxicity of AS, owing to the antioxidant properties of propolis, were studied.

Novel ball-milled biochar-vermiculite nanocomposites effectively adsorb aqueous As(Ⅴ)

Ball milling was used to fabricate a nanocomposite of 20% hickory biochar (600 °C) and 80% expanded vermiculite (20%-BC/VE). This novel composite adsorbent had much higher removal of As(V) from aqueous solutions than ball-milled biochar and expanded vermiculite. Characterization of these adsorbents showed that the enhanced As(V) adsorption was ascribed to much larger surface area and pore volume (2-6 times), notable changes in crystallinity, activation of cations, and increased functional groups in the nanocomposite compared with the ball-milled products of their pristine counterparts. The As(V) adsorption process by the 20%-BC/VE fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R²= 0.990) and Langmuir isotherm model (R²= 0.989) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 20.1 mg g^-1. The 20%-BC/VE best performed at pH about 6. The adsorption efficiency was not sensitive to the competition of NO₃^-, Cl^-, SO₄^2-, as well as the coexistence of humic acid. However, the adsorption capacity for As(V) was significantly reduced by coexisting with PO₄^3-. The 20%-BC/VE composite can potentially serve as a superior low-cost adsorbent for As(V) removal in real-world applications.

Decontamination of radioactive hazardous materials by using novel biodegradable strippable coatings and new generation complexing agents

Eight different types of complexing agents were employed for the development of new biodegradable decontamination solutions that are able to form strippable coatings after they are dispersed and allowed to dry on a variety of surfaces contaminated with ⁶⁰Co, ¹³³Ba, ¹³⁷Cs and ²⁴¹Am radioactive isotopes. The new generation of eco-friendly chelators with superior biodegradability, utilized for the first time in such applications, can easily replace the non-biodegradable and carcinogenic complexing agents that are still in use today, due to their decontamination performances. Furthermore, besides the complexing action over the radionuclides, the solutions contain two types of clays, Bentonite (BT) and Saponite (SP), which have the capacity to adsorb specific ions, improving the decontamination efficiency of the solutions. Our research revealed that it is preferable to replace BT with SP, due to its better dispersibility, thermal stability, next to superior ability to gel and better thermal stability (Miles, 2011). The solutions showed a decontamination factor superior to 95% for ¹³⁷Cs (on all surfaces), over 90% for ⁶⁰Co and ¹³³Ba, and more than 72% ²⁴¹Am (on all surfaces), except for galvanized metal plates, where lower decontamination factors were obtained: over 70% for ¹³³Ba, maximum 41.87% for ²⁴¹Am and 43.19% for ⁶⁰Co.

Local Structures of Two-Dimensional Zeolites-Mordenite and ZSM-5-Probed by Multinuclear NMR

Mesostructured pillared zeolite materials in the form of lamellar phases with a crystal structure of mordenite (MOR) and ZSM-5 (MFI) were grown using CTAB as an agent that creates mesopores, in a one-pot synthesis; then into the CTAB layers separating the 2D zeolite plates were introduced by diffusion the TEOS molecules which were further hydrolyzed, and finally the material was annealed to remove the organic phase, leaving the 2D zeolite plates separated by pillars of silicon dioxide. To monitor the successive structural changes and the state of the atoms of the zeolite framework and organic compounds at all the steps of the synthesis of pillared MOR and MFI zeolites, the nuclear magnetic resonance method (NMR) with magic angle spinning (MAS) was applied. The 27Al and 29Si MAS NMR spectra confirm the regularity of the zeolite frameworks of the as synthetized materials. Analysis of the 1H and 13C MAS NMR spectra and an experiment with variable contact time evidence a strong interaction between the charged "heads" -[N(CH3)3]+ of CTAB and the zeolite framework at the place of [AlO4]- location. According to 27Al and 29Si MAS NMR the evacuation of organic cations leads to a partial but not critical collapse of the local zeolite structure.

Single-Molecule AFM Study of DNA Damage by 1O2 Generated from Photoexcited C60

Light-induced oxidative damage of DNA by ¹O₂ generated from photoexcited C₆₀ was observed at the single-molecule level by atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging. Two types of DNA origami with uniform morphologies were immobilized on a mica surface and used as DNA substrates. Upon visible light irradiation (528 nm) in the presence of a C₆₀ aqueous solution, the morphology changes of DNA origami substrates were observed by time-lapse AFM imaging at the single-molecule level by tracking a discrete DNA molecule. The origami showed nicked and flattened morphologies with relaxed features caused by the covalent cleavage of the DNA strands. The involvement of ¹O₂ in the on-surface DNA damage was clearly confirmed by AFM experiments in the presence of a ¹O₂ quencher and ESR measurements with a spin-trapping agent for ¹O₂. This study is the first example of single-molecule observation of oxidative damage of DNA by AFM with corresponding morphology changes in a photocontrolled and time-dependent manner by ¹O₂ generated catalytically from photoexcited C₆₀.

Macroscopic and spectroscopic characterization of U(VI) sorption on biotite

Knowledge of the geochemical behavior of uranium is critical for the safe disposal of radioactive wastes. Biotite, a Fe(II)-rich phyllosilicate, is a common rock-forming mineral and a major component of granite or granodiorite. This work comprehensively studied the sorption of U(VI) on biotite surface with batch experiments and analyzed the uranium speciation with various spectroscopic techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and time-resolved fluorescence spectra (TRFS). Our results indicated that uranyl ions could penetrate into the interlayer of biotite, this ion-exchange process was pH-dependent and only favorable under acidic condition. Instead of precipitation or reduction to uraninite, the TRFS results strongly suggests U(VI) forms surface complexes under the neutral and alkaline condition, though the number and structure of surface species could not be identified accurately. Besides, the oxidation of biotite with peroxide hydrogen showed that structural Fe(II) would have a very low redox reactivity. With leaching experiments, zeta potential analysis and thermodynamics calculation, we discussed the possible reasons for inhibition of U(VI) reduction at the biotite-water interface. Our results may provide insight on interaction mechanism of uranium at mineral-water interface and help us understand the migration behavior of uranium in natural environments.

Controlling the Formation of Peptide Films: Fully Developed Helical Peptides are Required to Obtain a Homogenous Coating over a Large Area

The influence of conformational dynamics on the self-assembly process of a conformationally constrained analogue of the natural antimicrobial peptide Trichogin GA IV was analysed by spectroscopic methods, microscopy imaging at nanometre resolution, and molecular dynamics simulations. The formation of peptide films at the air/water interface and their deposition on a graphite or a mica substrate were investigated. A combination of experimental evidence with molecular dynamics simulation was used to demonstrate that only the fully developed helical structure of the analogue promotes formation of ordered aggregates that nucleate the growth of micrometric rods, which give rise to homogenous coating over wide regions of the hydrophilic mica. This work proves the influence of helix flexibility on peptide self-organization and orientation on surfaces, key steps in the design of bioinspired organic/inorganic hybrid materials.

Effects of curing temperature on the compressive strength and microstructure of copper tailing-based geopolymers

This study sought to analyze the effect of curing temperature on mechanical strength and microstructure of a copper tailing-based geopolymer via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), HCl extraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The distribution of gel formed in geopolymers tended to be uniform with increasing curing temperature from 25 to 80 °C. Moreover, the percentage of Si sites in C-S-H and N-A-S-H gels increased from 62.08% to 78.94% and more tetrahedral [AlO₄] was incorporated into the tetrahedron [SiO₄] backbone, leading to an increase of compressive strength from 10.2 to 39.6 MPa. When the curing temperature was increased to 120 °C, the percentage of Si sites in C-S-H and N-A-S-H gel decreased to 69.52%, and the compressive strength decreased to 27.5 MPa. Moderately elevated curing temperature promoted the dissolution of aluminosilicate while curing temperatures above 80 °C hindered it. Excessive curing temperature led to a decrease in the geopolymer alkaline medium.

In situ Surface Charge Density Visualization of Self-assembled DNA Nanostructures after Ion Exchange

The charge density of DNA is a key parameter in strand hybridization and for the interactions occurring between DNA and molecules in biological systems. Due to the intricate structure of DNA, visualization of the surface charge density of DNA nanostructures under physiological conditions was not previously possible. Here, we perform a simultaneous analysis of the topography and surface charge density of DNA nanostructures using atomic force microscopy and scanning ion conductance microscopy. The effect of in situ ion exchange using various alkali metal ions is tested with respect to the adsorption of DNA origami onto mica, and a quantitative study of surface charge density reveals ion exchange phenomena in mica as a key parameter in DNA adsorption. This is important for structure-function studies of DNA nanostructures. The research provides an efficient approach to study surface charge density of DNA origami nanostructures and other biological molecules at a single molecule level.

Normal and shear forces between boundary sphingomyelin layers under aqueous conditions

Sphingomyelin is one of the predominant phospholipid groups in synovial joints, where lipids have been strongly implicated in the boundary lubrication of articular cartilage; however, little attention has been paid to its lubrication behavior. In this study, we demonstrate that sphingomyelin is an excellent boundary lubricant by measuring the normal and shear forces between sphingomyelin-layer-coated surfaces with a surface force balance under aqueous conditions. Slightly negatively-charged egg sphingomyelin vesicles were adsorbed on mica either by calcium bridging or by charge screening with high concentration monovalent salt. The normal force profiles between opposing egg sphingomyelin layers (vesicles or bilayers) show long-ranged weak repulsion and short-ranged strong repulsion on approaching. Friction coefficients, calculated from the highest load, were (7.2 ± 1.7) × 10-4 at contact stresses of 9.1 ± 0.7 MPa across 0.3 mM liposome dispersion in 0.03 mM Ca2+, and (0.8-3.5) × 10-3 at contact stresses of 7.6 ± 0.8 MPa across 0.3 mM liposome dispersion in 150 mM NaNO3. Similar or slightly lower friction coefficients of (5.3 ± 0.8) × 10-4 at 9.8 ± 0.2 MPa were obtained by replacing the liposome dispersion in 0.03 mM Ca2+ by water. Such low friction coefficients, attributed to the hydration lubrication mechanism, are comparable to those of phosphatidylcholine lipids, which have been widely recognized as excellent aqueous biolubricants. Therefore, we believe that sphingomyelin, in parallel with phosphatidylcholine, contributes to the remarkably good boundary lubrication in synovial joints.

Ruthenium-Loaded Halloysite Nanotubes as Mesocatalysts for Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis

Halloysite aluminosilicate nanotubes loaded with ruthenium particles were used as reactors for Fischer–Tropsch synthesis. To load ruthenium inside clay, selective modification of the external surface with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, urea, or acetone azine was performed. Reduction of materials in a flow of hydrogen at 400 °C resulted in catalysts loaded with 2 wt.% of 3.5 nm Ru particles, densely packed inside the tubes. Catalysts were characterized by N₂-adsorption, temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and X-ray diffraction analysis. We concluded that the total acidity and specific morphology of reactors were the major factors influencing activity and selectivity toward CH₄, C_2–4, and C₅₊ hydrocarbons in the Fischer–Tropsch process. Use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid for ruthenium binding gave a methanation catalyst with ca. 50% selectivity to methane and C_2–4. Urea-modified halloysite resulted in the Ru-nanoreactors with high selectivity to valuable C₅₊ hydrocarbons containing few olefins and a high number of heavy fractions (α = 0.87). Modification with acetone azine gave the slightly higher CO conversion rate close to 19% and highest selectivity in C₅₊ products. Using a halloysite tube with a 10–20-nm lumen decreased the diffusion limitation and helped to produce high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons. The extremely small C₂–C₄ fraction obtained from the urea- and azine-modified sample was not reachable for non-templated Ru-nanoparticles. Dense packing of Ru nanoparticles increased the contact time of olefins and their reabsorption, producing higher amounts of C₅₊ hydrocarbons. Loading of Ru inside the nanoclay increased the particle stability and prevented their aggregation under reaction conditions.

Injectable MMP-Responsive Nanotube-Modified Gelatin Hydrogel for Dental Infection Ablation

A photocrosslinkable gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogel has been widely examined in regenerative engineering because of its good cell-tissue affinity and degradability in the presence of matrix metalloproteinases. A halloysite aluminosilicate nanotube (HNT) is a known reservoir for the loading and sustained delivery of therapeutics. Here, we formulate injectable chlorhexidine (CHX)-loaded nanotube-modified GelMA hydrogel that is cytocompatible and biodegradable and provides sustained release of CHX for infection ablation while displaying good biocompatibility. The effects of HNTs and CHX on hydrogel degradability and mechanical properties, as well as on the kinetics of CHX release, and on the antimicrobial efficacy against oral pathogens were systematically assessed. Cytocompatibility in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth and inflammatory response in vivo using a subcutaneous rat model were determined. Our hydrogel system, that is, (CHX)-loaded nanotube-modified GelMA showed minimum localized inflammatory responses, supporting its ability for drug delivery applications. Moreover, we showed that the incorporation of CHX-loaded nanotubes reduces the mechanical properties, increases the swelling ratio, and diminishes the degradation rate of the hydrogels. Importantly, the presence of CHX-loaded nanotubes inhibits bacterial growth with minimal cell toxicity. Our findings provide a new strategy to modify GelMA hydrogel with chlorhexidine-loaded nanotubes for clinical use as an injectable drug delivery strategy for dental infection ablation.

Application of seven different clay types in sorbent-modified biodegradability studies with cationic biocides

The cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) can exert inhibitory effects on micro-organisms responsible for their biodegradation. However, under environmentally relevant exposure scenarios the presence of and sorption to organic and inorganic matter can lead to significant reduction of inhibitory effects. In our studies we investigated silica gel and seven clays as inert sorbents to mitigate these inhibitory effects in a 28 day manometric respirometry biodegradation test. CTAB was not inhibitory to the used inoculum, but we did observe that seven out of eight sorbents increased maximum attainable biodegradation, and four out of eight decreased the lag phase. The strongly inhibitory effect of CPC was successfully mitigated by most sorbents, with five out of eight allowing >50% biodegradation within 28 days. Results further indicate that bioaccessibility of the sorbed fractions in the stirred manometric test systems was higher than in calmly shaken headspace test systems. Bioaccessibility might also be limited depending on characteristics of test chemical and sorbent type, with montmorillonite and bentonite apparently providing the lowest level of bioaccessibility with CPC. Clay sorbents can thus be used as environmentally relevant sorbents to mitigate potential inhibitory effects of test chemicals, but factors that impede bioaccessibility should be considered. In addition to apparently increased bioaccessibility due to stirring, the automated manometric respirometry test systems give valuable and highly cost-effective insights into lag phase and biodegradation kinetics; information that is especially relevant for test chemicals of gradual biodegradability.

Aluminosilicate Nanocomposites from Incinerated Chinese Holy Joss Fly Ash: A Potential Nanocarrier for Drug Cargos

An incredible amount of joss fly ash is produced from the burning of Chinese holy joss paper; thus, an excellent method of recycling joss fly ash waste to extract aluminosilicate nanocomposites is explored. The present research aims to introduce a novel method to recycle joss fly ash through a simple and straightforward experimental procedure involving acidic and alkaline treatments. The synthesized aluminosilicate nanocomposite was characterized to justify its structural and physiochemical characteristics. A morphological analysis was performed with field-emission transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy revealed the size of the aluminosilicate nanocomposite to be ~25 nm, while also confirming a uniformly spherical-shaped nanostructure. The elemental composition was measured by energy dispersive spectroscopy and revealed the Si to Al ratio to be 13.24 to 7.96, showing the high purity of the extracted nanocomposite. The roughness and particle distribution were analyzed using atomic force microscopy and a zeta analysis. X-ray diffraction patterns showed a synthesis of faceted and cubic aluminosilicate crystals in the nanocomposites. The presence of silica and aluminum was further proven by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the functional groups were recognized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The thermal capacity of the nanocomposite was examined by a thermogravimetric analysis. In addition, the research suggested the promising application of aluminosilicate nanocomposites as drug carriers. The above was justified by an enzyme-linked apta-sorbent assay, which claimed that the limit of the aptasensing aluminosilicate-conjugated ampicillin was two-fold higher than that in the absence of the nanocomposite. The drug delivery property was further justified through an antibacterial analysis against Escherichia coli (gram-negative) and Bacillus subtilis (gram-positive).

Tuning tetracycline removal from aqueous solution onto activated 2:1 layered clay mineral: Characterization, sorption and mechanistic studies

Water pollution due to emerging contaminants (especially pharmaceuticals) is a major environmental threat which results in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria/resistance genes in the aquatic environment. Therefore, robust and cost-effective methods are required to address this problem. In this study, thermal activation was opted for the modification of natural bentonite clay (BC) and utilized to investigate the adsorptive removal of tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solution. The physicochemical surface properties of the raw and modified bentonite samples were also investigated. The BET analysis revealed that the thermally activated bentonite (TB) has better properties than BC. The surface area of TB was found to be more than two-fold higher compared to that of BC. The FTIR spectra exhibited the existence of AlOH, SiO and SiOSi functional groups in the samples, confirming the presence of hydrated aluminosilicate in the clay. The effects of various operating parameters were analyzed via optimization studies. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity estimated by Langmuir model was found to be 156.7 and 388.1 mg g^-1 for BC and TB, respectively. Furthermore, fixed-bed column studies were performed to get insights into the adsorption behavior of TB in a dynamic system. The mechanism of TC adsorption by TB was successfully explored.

Preparation of Aluminosilicate Ferrierite Zeolite Nanosheets with Controllable Thickness in the Presence of a Sole Organic Structure Directing Agent

Preparation of aluminosilicate ferrierite (FER) zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness in the presence of a sole organic ammonium is attractive, but still challenging. In this report, with the employment of N,N-diethyl-cis-2,6-dimethylpiperidinium (DMP) as both a structure directing agent and crystal growth inhibitor, aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets, with a variety of crystal thicknesses, ranging from 6 to 200 nm, are successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Very interestingly, the amount of DMP in the starting gel is the key factor for crystal thickness control of aluminosilicate FER zeolite nanosheets. The obtained FER products, with different thicknesses, are well characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), N₂ sorption, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) techniques. This simple strategy might provide a novel avenue for the synthesis of other zeolite nanosheets with controllable thickness.

Vermiculite as heterogeneous catalyst in electrochemical Fenton-based processes: Application to the oxidation of Ponceau SS dye

Modified sodium vermiculite, an iron-rich clay mineral, has been used in novel heterogeneous electrochemical Fenton-based treatments, so-called electro-Fenton (EF)-vermiculite, UVA photoelectro-Fenton (PEF)-vermiculite and solar photoelectro-Fenton (SPEF)-vermiculite. Tests were made with 130 mL of 0.150 mM Ponceau SS diazo dye in 0.050 M Na₂SO₄ at pH 3.0, in the presence of 1.0 g L^-1 catalyst microparticles. The electrolyses were performed in an undivided cell with a boron-doped diamond anode (BDD) and air-diffusion cathode for H₂O₂ production, at 33.3 mA cm^-2. Decolorization and mineralization were upgraded in the sequence: EF-vermiculite < PEF-vermiculite < SPEF-vermiculite. The removal of organics occurred by the combined action of OH oxidant formed at the BDD surface and homogeneous and heterogeneous Fenton's reactions, along with the photolysis caused by UVA light or sunlight. The homogeneous Fenton's reaction resulted from iron ions leaching, but the heterogeneous mechanism was prevalent. Comparative treatments by anodic oxidation in the presence of H₂O₂ and homogeneous EF were less effective than EF-vermiculite. The diazo dye absorbance decays agreed with a pseudo-first-order kinetics. SPEF-vermiculite was the most powerful process, yielding total decolorization and 84.1% mineralization after 300 and 360 min, respectively. The influence of catalyst concentration, current density and diazo dye content on PEF-vermiculite performance was examined. Oxalic, oxamic, malic, tartronic and acetic acids were detected as final short-linear carboxylic acids.
