Effects of different hot-air drying methods on the dynamic changes in color, nutrient and aroma quality of three chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) varieties

The effects of constant and variable temperature hot-air drying methods on drying time, colors, nutrients, and volatile compounds of three chili pepper varieties were investigated in this study. Overall, the variable temperature drying could facilitate the removal of water, preserve surface color, and reduce the loss of total sugar, total acid, fat and capsaicin contents. Electronic-nose (E-nose) and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectroscopy (GC-IMS) analyses found that aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and esters contributed to the aroma of chili peppers. The drying process led to an increase in acids, furans and sulfides contents, while decreasing alcohols, esters and olefins levels. In addition, the three chili pepper varieties displayed distinct physical characteristics, drying times, chromatic values, nutrients levels and volatile profiles during dehydration. This study suggests variable temperature drying is a practical approach to reduce drying time, save costs, and maintain the commercial appeal of chili peppers.

Synergistic digestibility effect by planktonic natural food and habitat renders high digestion efficiency in agastric aquatic consumers

A digestibility enhancing effect of natural food on stomachless fish model (Cyprinus carpio) was verified by fluorogenic substrate assays of enzymatic activities in experimental pond carp gut flush and planktonic food over a full vegetative season. Then compared with size-matched conspecific grown artificially (tank carp) and an advanced omnivore species possessing true stomach (tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus). Results suggested activities of digestive enzymes (except amylolytic) were significantly higher in pond carp (p ≤ 0.05) than in the size-matched tank carp. Even compared to tilapia, pond carp appeared superior (p < 0.05; proteolytic or chitinolytic activities) or comparable (p > 0.05; phosphatase or cellulolytic activities). Amylolytic, chitinolytic, and phosphatases activities in pond carp gut significantly increased (p ≤ 0.01) over season. Several orders-of-magnitude higher enzymatic activities were detected in planktonic natural food than expressed in carp gut. Amino acid markers in planktonic food revealed a higher share of zooplankton (microcrustaceans), but not phytoplankton, synchronized with higher activities of complex polysaccharide-splitting enzymes (cellulolytic and chitinolytic) in fish gut. Periods of clear water phase low in chlorophyll-a and nutrients, but high in certain zooplankton (preferably cladocerans), may create a synergistic digestibility effect in pond carp. We conclude aquatic ecosystem components (natural food, water, microbiota) enhance fishes' hydrolyzing capabilities of C/N/P macromolecules and even their complex polymers such as cellulose, chitin, and maybe phytate (to be validated), to the extent that being stomachless is not an issue. Aquatic nutritional ecologists may consider that laboratory-based understandings of digestibility may underestimate digestion efficiency of free-ranging fish in ponds or lakes.

Effect of manure co-digestion on methane production, carbon retention, and fertilizer value of digestate

Anaerobic digestion can provide benefits not only from the perspective of renewable energy production but also in the form of fertilization effect and increased retention of C in soils after digestate application. This study consisted of two phases, where the first phase assessed the suitability of carbon-rich co-feedstocks for methane production via laboratory testing. The second phase assessed the balance and stability of C before and after anaerobic digestion by systematic digestate characterization, and by evaluating its carbon retention potential using a modeling approach. The results indicated that pyrolysis chars had a negligible effect on the methane production potential of cattle manure, while wheat straw expectedly increased methane production. Thus, a mixture of cattle manure and wheat straw was digested in pilot-scale leach-bed reactors and compared with undigested manure and straw. Although the total amount of C in the digestate was lower than in the untreated feedstocks, the digestion process stabilized C and was modeled to be more effective in retaining C in the soil than untreated cattle manure and wheat straw. In addition, digestion converted 23-27 % of the C into valuable methane, increasing the valorization of the total C in the feedstock. Considering anaerobic digestion processes as a strategy to optimize both carbon and nutrient valorization provides a more holistic approach to addressing climate change and improving soil health.

Biodegradable active composite hydrogel packaging for postharvest climacteric bananas preservation

Climacteric bananas are susceptible to endogenous ethylene and temperature, resulting in dehydration, accelerated senescence and deterioration. The widely-used plastic cling films is particularly complicated due to their high consumption and non-degradability. Herein, this study proposed to fabricate a carboxymethyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol/pyrazoic acid (CPP) hydrogel for postharvest banana preservation. The hydrogel demonstrated excellent potential as a packaging film, including natural degradability (complete degradation within 50 days), high tensile performance, transparent visibility and biosafety. As a validation experiment, bananas in a 30 °C environment confirmed the effectiveness of CPP hydrogels in banana postharvest preservation. Compared with the blank control and CP hydrogel, CPP packaging film delayed the processes of browning, dehydration, softening, nutrients loss, ripening and senescence in bananas, thereby maintaining their commercial value. Accordingly, this study demonstrates the potential of hydrogel materials as an alternative strategy to climacteric fruit preservation and plastic film.

Effect of different nutrients on blood glucose, inflammatory response and oxidative stress in gestational diabetes mellitus: a network meta-analysis

We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, The Cochrane Library, China Biomedical Literature Database and other databases from inception to June 2023. The included studies were randomised controlled trials (RCT). The studies were screened by four authors, divided into two independent pairs. A total of eighteen studies were included, including 1362 patients, involving twelve intervention measures. The different nutrients had a significant effect on improving blood glucose, reducing inflammation levels and reducing oxidative stress compared with placebo (P < 0.05). Cumulative probability ranking showed that vitamin A + vitamin D + vitamin E ranked first in lowering fasting blood glucose (standardised mean difference (SMD) = 41.30, 95 % CI (2.07, 825.60)) and postprandial 2-h blood glucose (SMD = 15.19, 95 % CI (4.16, 55.53)). In terms of insulin resistance index, the first highest probability ranking is vitamin D (SMD = 5.12, 95 % CI (0.76, 34.54)). In terms of reducing the high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level, the first in probability ranking is VE (SMD = 2.58, 95 % CI (1.87,3.55)). The results of cumulative probability ranking showed that Mg + Zn + Ca + VD ranked first in reducing TNF-α (SMD = 1.90, 95% CI (0.40, 9.08)) and IL-6 (SMD = 1.83, 95 % CI (0.37, 9.12)). In terms of reducing malondialdehyde levels, the first ranked probability is VB1 (SMD = 4.99, 95 % CI (1.85, 13.46)). Cumulative probability ranking results showed that Ca + VD ranked first in reducing total antioxidant capacity (SMD = 0.66,95 % CI (0.38, 1.15)) and glutathione (SMD = 1.39, 95 % CI (0.43, 4.56)). In conclusion, nutritional interventions have significant effects on improving blood glucose, inflammatory levels and oxidative stress in patients with gestational diabetes. Due to the high uncertainty in the results and differences in the number and quality of studies included, the reliability of the conclusions still needs to be validated by conducting large-sample, high-quality RCT studies.

Enhancing nutrient absorption through the influence of mangrove ecosystem on flow rate and retention time in salt marshes

This study investigates the impact of pneumatophores (the aerial roots of Avicenna marina) on water flow rate, retention time, contact time, and consequently on nutrient absorption through the sediment in sub-tropical salt marshes. The goal is to realize how the density of mangroves in salt marshes influences the kinematic factors of streamflow at estuaries. To this end, a field experiment was carried out to assess nutrient and organic compound levels in the sediment and water samples, spanning six sampling stations along the Chabahar River discharging to the Chabahar Bay, Iran. Then, we delved into the influence of altering environmental parameters, such as density and geometry, on the kinematic features of the flow through statistical analysis and hydraulic modeling. The results showed that the aerial roots reduce the flow rate and increase both retention and contact times. The longest retention time was observed at station #5 due to increased vegetation density and decreased instream velocity. In addition, measurements of total organic matter, total organic carbon, and total nitrogen indicated that an extended contact time resulted in increased absorption flux to the stream by sediments. As a result, pneumatophores can serve as an effective sink for organic matter in ecotones in salt marshes.

Effects of typhoon events on coastal hydrology, nutrients, and algal bloom dynamics: Insights from continuous observation and machine learning in semi-enclosed Zhanjiang Bay, China

Typhoons can induce variations in hydrodynamic conditions and biogeochemical processes, potentially escalating the risk of algal bloom occurrences impacting coastal ecosystems. However, the impacts of typhoons on instantaneous changes and the mechanisms behind typhoon-induced algal blooms remain poorly understood. This study utilized high-frequency in situ observation and machine learning model to track the dynamic variations in meteorological, hydrological, physicochemical, and Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) levels through the complete Typhoon Talim landing in Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB) in July 2023. The results showed that a delayed onset of algal bloom occurring 10 days after typhoon's arrival. Subsequently, as temperatures reached a suitable range, with an ample supply of nutrients and water stability, Chl-a peaked at 121.49 μg L-1 in algal bloom period. Additionally, water temperature and air temperature decreased by 1.61 °C and 2.8 °C during the typhoon, respectively. In addition, wind speed and flow speed increased by 1.34 and 0.015 m s-1 h-1 to peak values, respectively. Moreover, the slow decline of 8.2 % in salinity suggested a substantial freshwater input, leading to an increase in nutrients. For instance, the mean DIN and DIP were 2.2 and 8.5 times higher than those of the pre-typhoon period, resulting in a decrease in DIN/DIP (closer to16) and the alleviation of P limitation. Furthermore, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) were both low during the typhoon period and then peaked at 8.93 and 19.05 mg L-1 during the algal bloom period, respectively, but subsequently decreased, remaining lower than those of the pre-typhoon period. A preliminary learning machine model was established to predict Chl-a and exhibited good accuracy, with R2 of 0.73. This study revealed the mechanisms of eutrophication status formation and algal blooms occurrence in the coastal waters, providing insights into the effects of typhoon events on tropical coastal biogeochemistry and ecology.

Enhancing soil health to minimize cadmium accumulation in agro-products: the role of microorganisms, organic matter, and nutrients

Agro-products accumulate Cd from the soil and are the main source of Cd in humans. Their use must therefore be minimized using effective strategies. Large soil beds containing low-to-moderate Cd-contamination are used to produce agro-products in many developing countries to keep up with the demand of their large populations. Improving the health of Cd-contaminated soils could be a cost-effective method for minimizing Cd accumulation in crops. In this review, the latest knowledge on the physiological and molecular mechanisms of Cd uptake and translocation in crops is presented, providing a basis for developing advanced technologies for producing Cd-safe agro-products. Inoculation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, application of organic matter, essential nutrients, beneficial elements, regulation of soil pH, and water management are efficient techniques used to decrease soil Cd bioavailability and inhibiting the uptake and accumulation of Cd in crops. In combination, these strategies for improving soil health are environmentally friendly and practical for reducing Cd accumulation in crops grown in lightly to moderately Cd-contaminated soil.

One-step bioremediation of hypersaline and nutrient-rich food industry process water with a domestic microbial community containing diatom Halamphora coffeaeformis

Proper treatment of hypersaline and nutrient-rich food industry process water (FIPW) is challenging in conventional wastewater plants. Insufficient treatment leads to serious environmental hazards. However, bioremediation of FIPW with an indigenous microbial community can not only recover nutrients but generate biomass of diverse applications. In this study, monoculture of Halamphora coffeaeformis, together with synthetic bacteria isolated from a local wastewater plant, successfully recovered 91% of NH4+-N, 78% of total nitrogen, 95% of total phosphorus as well as 82% of total organic carbon from medium enriched with 10% FIPW. All identified organic acids and amino acids, except oxalic acid, were completely removed after 14 days treatment. A significantly higher biomass concentration (1.74 g L-1) was achieved after 14 days treatment in the medium with 10% FIPW than that in a nutrient-replete lab medium as control. The harvested biomass could be a potential feedstock for high-value biochemicals and fertilizer production, due to fucoxanthin accumulation (3 mg g-1) and a fantastic performance in P assimilation. Metagenomic analysis revealed that bacteria community in the algal system, dominated by Psychrobacter and Halomonas, also contributed to the biomass accumulation and uptake of nutrients. Transcriptomic analysis further disclosed that multiple pathways, involved in translation, folding, sorting and degradation as well as transport and catabolism, were depressed in H. coffeaeformis grown in FIPW-enriched medium, as compared to the control. Collectively, the proposed one-step strategy in this work offers an opportunity to achieve sustainable wastewater management and a way towards circular economy.

A perceptual approach to address complex water management issues in lowland permeable catchments

Water quality management is a pressing global concern, and an increasingly complex issue due to climate and land-use change, legacy pollution, and the persistent release of well-known and emerging contaminants from diffuse and point sources. The increasing availability of high-frequency monitoring data is leading existing, often heuristic approaches, to be judged inadequate. Water managers frequently rely on simple qualitative and/or quantitative approaches for decision-making, but a lack of tangible improvement in freshwater quality outcomes is demanding new and innovative approaches that rely more on physical process understanding, rather than precedent. In this study, we drew upon local geological, hydrogeological, and hydrological data to infer a high-level perceptual model of surface/groundwater interactions in a chalk stream in Dorset, UK. We used the perceptual model to interrogate spatial and temporal trends in historical water quality data and to construct reach-scale nutrient mass balances. Through novel representation with Sankey diagrams, the perceptual model highlighted the relative importance of different hydrological features. Surface/groundwater interactions were found to occur predominantly by spring flow. We demonstrate that river flow accretion was dominated by the Chalk aquifer despite only occupying ca. 15 % of the surface bedrock area, and that spring sources, whilst vital to dilute treated sewage inputs in baseflow conditions, were also major sources of legacy nitrate. Nutrient mass balances showed that sewage treatment works contributed ca. 13 % to soluble reactive phosphorus load, with groundwater accounting for ca. 48 %. Thus, a determinand often associated with point-source pollution was shown to be diffuse dominated in this river. The study demonstrated how a multi-disciplinary approach to water management, based on a comprehensive perceptual modelling approach, could identify hitherto unknown sources and relative contributors to freshwater pollution and allow flow and load apportionment studies to provide useful decision-support to manage nutrient pollution. The novel application of perceptual modelling tools, such as the Sankey diagram, allows different source attributions to be presented in an accessible manner, and can be readily transferred to other study areas.

The connection between Submarine Groundwater Discharge and seawater quality: The threat of treated wastewater injected into coastal aquifers

Submarine Groundwater Discharge (SGD) delivers nutrients to the coastal sea triggering phytoplankton blooms, eutrophication, and can also serve as a pathway for contaminants. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) including injection wells in coastal areas influence coastal aquifers and might impact the composition and magnitude of SGD fluxes. In tourist areas, wastewater treatment may be less efficient and larger in volume during high seasons, potentially impacting nutrient fluxes from SGD and exacerbating environmental impacts. This study analyzes the nutrient transfer from treated wastewater injection in karstic aquifers to the coastal sea via SGD, considering the impacts of tourism seasonality. This study is conducted in Cala Deià, a small cove in the Balearic Islands, a Mediterranean tourist destination. The findings suggest that the seasonality of tourism, leading to variations in the volume of wastewater treated in the WWTP, influences the dynamics of the coastal aquifer. This leads to increased SGD water and nutrient fluxes to the sea in summer, i.e. the peak tourist season. The measured DIN, DIP, and DSi inventories in the cove are much larger in August than in April (3, 10, and 1.5 times higher, respectively) due to higher input of nutrients in summer due to SGD impacted by the WWTP. These elevated nutrient flows can support algal blooms in the cove, compromising water quality for local swimmers and tourists. Indeed, in August, shoreline stations exhibited eutrophic Chl-a concentrations, with peaks reaching approximately 4 mg Chl-a L-1. These elevated levels suggest the presence of an algal bloom during the survey. The anthropogenic origin of SGD-driven nutrients is traced in seawater and seagrass meadows, as evidenced by high ∂15N signatures indicative of polluted areas. Thus, the high pressure exerted on coastal areas by tourism activities increased the magnitude of SGD nutrient fluxes, thereby threatening coastal ecosystems and the services they provide.

Environmental factors controlling seasonal and spatial variability of zooplankton in thermokarst lakes along a permafrost gradient of Western Siberia

Humic thermokarst lakes of permafrost peatlands in Western Siberia Lowland (WSL) are major environmental controllers of carbon and nutrient storage in inland waters and greenhouse gases emissions to the atmosphere in the subarctic. In contrast to sizable former research devoted to hydrochemical and hydrobiological (phytoplankton) composition, zooplankton communities of these thermokarst lakes and thaw ponds remain poorly understood, especially along the latitudinal gradient, which is a perfect predictor of permafrost zones. To fill this gap, 69 thermokarst lakes of the WSL were sampled using unprecedented spatial coverage, from continuous to sporadic permafrost zone, in order to assess zooplankton (Cladocera, Copepoda, Rotifera) diversity and abundance across three main open water physiological seasons (spring, summer and autumn). We aimed at assessing the relationship of environmental factors (water column hydrochemistry, nutrients, and phytoplankton parameters) with the abundance and diversity of zooplankton. A total of 74 zooplankton species and taxa were detected, with an average eight taxa per lake/pond. Species richness increased towards the north and reached the maximum in the continuous permafrost zone with 13 species found in this zone only. In contrast, the number of species per waterbody decreased towards the north, which was mainly associated with a decrease in the number of cladocerans. Abundance and diversity of specific zooplankton groups strongly varied across the seasons and permafrost zones. Among the main environmental controllers, Redundancy Analysis revealed that water temperature, lake area, depth, pH, Dissolved Inorganic and Organic Carbon and CO2 concentrations were closely related to zooplankton abundance. Cladocerans were positively related to water temperature during all seasons. Copepods were positively related to depth and lake water pH in all seasons. Rotifers were related to different factors in each season, but were most strongly associated with DOC, depth, CH4, phytoplankton and cladoceran abundance. Under climate warming scenario, considering water temperature increase and permafrost boundary shift northward, one can expect an increase in the diversity and abundance of cladocerans towards the north which can lead to partial disappearance of copepods, especially rare calanoid species.

Investigating aluminum toxicity effects on callose deposition, oxidative stress, and nutrient homeostasis in banana genotypes

Aluminum (Al) toxicity poses a significant challenge to agricultural productivity, particularly in acidic soils. The banana crop, predominantly cultivated in tropical and subtropical climates, often grapples with low pH and Al toxicity. This study seeks to explore the differential responses of two banana genotypes with varying Al tolerance (Baodao and Baxi) to Al exposure (100 and 500 µM) for 24 h. Microscopic analysis uncovered distinctive structural modifications in root cells, with Baodao displaying more severe alterations in response to Al stress. There was higher superoxide (O2-.) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production and lipid peroxidation in Baodao indicating enhanced oxidative stress and membrane damage. Al accumulation in root tips was higher in Baxi than Baodao, while the roots of Baodao had a higher accumulation of callose. Nutrient content analysis revealed alterations in ion levels, highlighting the impact of Al exposure on nutrient uptake and homeostasis. In summary, Al differentially affects callose deposition, which, in turn, leads to Al uptake and nutrient homeostasis alteration in two contrasting banana genotypes. This intricate interplay is a key factor in understanding plant responses to aluminum toxicity and can inform strategies for crop improvement and soil management in aluminum-stressed environments.

Characteristic and mechanism of biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal facilitated by biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) at various concentrations of Mn(II)

Biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) have attracted considerable attention as active oxidants, adsorbents, and catalysts. However, characteristics and mechanisms of nitrification-denitrification in biological redox reactions mediated by different concentrations of BioMnOx are still unclear. Fate of nutrients (e.g., NH4+-N, TP, NO3--N) and COD were investigated through different concentrations of BioMnOx produced by Mn(II) in the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). 34% and 89.2%, 37.8% and 89.8%, 57.3% and 88.9%, and 62.1% and 90.4% of TN and COD by MBBR were synchronously removed in four phases, respectively. The result suggested that Mn(II) significantly improved the performance of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) and TP removal based on manganese (Mn) redox cycling. Characteristics of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and electron transfer system activity (ETSA) were discussed, demonstrating that ROS accumulation reduced the ETSA and GSH-Px activities when Mn(II) concentration increased. Extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) function and metabolic pathway of Mn(II) were explored. Furthermore, effect of cellular components on denitrification was evaluated including BioMnOx performances, indicating that Mn(II) promoted the non-enzymatic action of cell fragments. Finally, mechanism of nitrification and denitrification, denitrifying phosphorus and Mn removal was further elucidated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high throughput sequencing, and fourier transform infrared reflection (FTIR). This results can bringing new vision for controlling nutrient pollution in redox process of Mn(II).

Impact of temperature and residence time on sewage sludge pyrolysis for combined carbon sequestration and energy production

Environmental challenges related to sewage sludge call for urgent sustainable management of this resource. Sludge pyrolysis might be considered as a sustainable technology and is anticipated to support measures for mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration. The end products of the process have various applications, including the agricultural utilization of biochar, as well as the energy exploitation of bio-oil and syngas. In this research, sewage sludge was pyrolyzed at 500 °C, 600 °C, 750 °C, and 850 °C. At each temperature, pyrolysis was explored at 1hr, 2hrs, and 3hrs residence times. The ratio (H/Corg)at was tapped to imply organic carbon stability and carbon sequestration potential. Optimum operating conditions were achieved at 750 °C and 2hrs residence time. Produced biochar had (H/Corg)at ratio of 0.54, while nutrients' contents based on dry weight were 3.99%, 3.2%, and 0.6% for total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and total potassium (TK), respectively. Electrical conductivity of biochar was lesser than the feed sludge. Heavy metals in biochar aligned with the recommended values of the International Biochar Initiative. Heat content of condensable and non-condensable volatiles was sufficient to maintain the temperature of the furnace provided that PYREG process is considered. However, additional energy source is demanded for sludge drying.

Residual efficiency of iron-nanoparticles and different iron sources on growth, and antioxidants in maize plants under salts stress: life cycle study

Exogenous application of iron (Fe) may alleviate salinity stress in plants growing in saline soils. This comparative study evaluated the comparative residual effects of iron nanoparticles (FNp) with two other Fe sources including iron-sulphate (FS) and iron-chelate (FC) on maize (Zea mays L.) crop grown under salt stress. All three Fe sources were applied at the rate of 15 and 25 mg/kg of soil before the sowing of wheat (an earlier crop; following the sequence of crop rotation) and no further Fe amendments were added later for the maize crop. Results revealed that FNp application at 25 mg/kg (FNp-2) substantially increased maize height, root length, root dry weight, shoot dry weight, and grain weightby 80.7%, 111.1%, 45.7%, 59.5%, and 77.2% respectively, as compared to the normal controls; and 62.6%, 81.3%, 65.1%, 78%, and 61.2% as compared to salt-stressed controls, respectively. The FNp-2 treatment gave higher activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase compared to salt stressed control (50.6%, 51%, 48.5%, and 49.2%, respectively). The FNp-2 treatment also produced more photosynthetic pigments and better physiological markers: higher chlorophyll a contents by 49.9%, chlorophyll b contents by 67.2%, carotenoids by 62.5%, total chlorophyll contents by 50.3%, membrane stability index by 59.1%, leaf water relative contents by 60.3% as compared to salt stressed control. The highest Fe and Zn concentrations in maize roots, shoots, and grains were observed in FNp treatment as compared to salts stressed control. Higher application rates of Fe from all the sources also delivered better outcomes in alleviating salinity stress in maize compared to their respective low application rates. The study demonstrated that FNp application alleviated salinity stress, increased nutrient uptake and enhanced the yield of maize grown on saline soils.

Different responses of oxygen and hydrogen isotopes in leaf and tree-ring organic matter to lethal soil drought

The oxygen and hydrogen isotopic composition (δ18O, δ2H) of plant tissues are key tools for the reconstruction of hydrological and plant physiological processes and may therefore be used for disentangling reasons of tree mortality. However, how both elements respond to soil drought conditions before death have rarely been investigated. To test this, we performed a greenhouse study and determined predisposing fertilization and lethal soil drought effects on δ18O and δ2H values of organic matter (OM) in leaves and tree rings of living and dead saplings of five European tree species. For mechanistic insights, we additionally measured isotopic (i.e., δ18O and δ2H values of leaf and twig water), physiological (i.e., leaf water potential and gas-exchange) and metabolic traits (i.e., leaf and stem non-structural carbohydrate concentration, C:N ratios). Across all species, lethal soil drought generally caused a homogenous 2H-enrichment in leaf and tree-ring OM, but a low and heterogenous δ18O response in the same tissues. Unlike δ18O values, δ2H values of tree-ring OM were correlated with those of leaf and twig water and with plant physiological traits across treatments and species. The 2H-enrichment in plant OM also went along with a decrease in stem starch concentrations under soil drought compared to well-watered conditions. In contrast, the predisposing fertilization had generally no significant effect on any tested isotopic, physiological, and metabolic traits. We propose that the 2H-enrichment in the dead trees is related to (i) the plant water isotopic composition, (ii) metabolic processes shaping leaf non-structural carbohydrates, (iii) the use of carbon reserves for growth, and (iv) species-specific physiological adjustments. The homogenous stress imprint on δ2H but not on δ18O suggests that the former could be used as a proxy to reconstruct soil droughts and underlying processes of tree mortality.

Understanding nitrogen dynamics in the Brazilian beef industry: A comprehensive decadal analysis

Brazil stands as a prominent beef producer and exporter, witnessing major transformations and expansions in its production chain over the past 20 years. These changes have prompted concerns regarding waste generation and environmental pressure. This study employs material flow analysis (MFA) to quantify nitrogen flows throughout the cattle slaughter process and subsequent beef consumption in Brazil, spanning from 2011 to 2021. The analysis encompasses co-production streams like leather, tallow, viscera, and blood. Nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and the nitrogen cascade indicator (NCI) were used to evaluate efficiency and nitrogen accumulation in the production chain. Nitrogen inputs in the system increased by 8.47 %, while beef production rose by 7.29 %. In contrast, per capita beef consumption decreased by 1.29 kg, despite an overall consumption increase of 2.84 %, attributed to population growth in Brazil. Beef exports witnessed a notable surge of 86.03 %. Conversely, human excreta and food waste losses experienced increments of 10.88 % and 2.84 %, respectively. Examining NUE reveals the highest values during the slaughter phase (90 %), followed by processing, transportation, and storage stages (79-88 %). The consumption phase exhibited the lowest NUE values (29-34 %). Regarding the cumulative nitrogen effect, the NCI varied between 77 % and 82 % throughout the study period. This highlights opportunities for enhancing nitrogen use efficiency, particularly by addressing food waste at the consumer level. Notably, the study observes nitrogen accumulation across the Brazilian beef production chain, potentially contributing to the nitrogen cascade effect and heightening environmental pressure. Recognizing these dynamics provides avenues for targeted improvements, emphasizing the need to address nitrogen-related challenges and enhance sustainability in the beef production and consumption landscape.

Evaluating the relationship between the nutrient intake of lactating women and their breast milk nutritional profile: a systematic review and narrative synthesis

Maternal diet influences breast milk nutritional profile; however, it is unclear which nutrients and contaminants are particularly responsive to short- and long-term changes in maternal intake, and the impact of specific exclusion diets, such as vegan or vegetarian. This study systematically reviewed the literature on the effects of maternal nutrient intake, including exclusion diets, on both the nutrient and contaminant content of breast milk. The electronic databases, PubMed, CENTRAL, Web of Science and CINALH were systematically searched until 4 June 2023, with additionally searches of reference lists (PROSPERO, CRD42020221577). The quality of the studies was examined using Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Eighty-eight studies (n 6577) met the search criteria. Due to high heterogeneity, meta-analysis was not possible. There was strong evidence of response to maternal intakes for DHA and EPA, vitamins A, E and K, iodine and Se in breast milk composition, some evidence of response for α-linolenic acid, B vitamins, vitamin C and D, ovalbumin, tyrosine and contaminants, and insufficient evidence to identify the effects arachidonic acid, Cu, Fe, Zn and choline. The paucity of evidence and high heterogeneity among studies reflects the need for more high-quality trials. However, this review identified the importance of maternal intake in the nutritional content of breast milk for a wide range of nutrients and supports the recommendation for supplementation of DHA and vitamin B12 for those on restrictive diets.

Environmental DNA highlights the influence of salinity and agricultural run-off on coastal fish assemblages in the Great Barrier Reef region

Agricultural run-off in Australia's Mackay-Whitsunday region is a major source of nutrient and pesticide pollution to coastal and inshore ecosystems of the Great Barrier Reef. While the effects of run-off are well documented for the region's coral and seagrass habitats, the ecological impacts on estuaries, the direct recipients of run-off, are less known. This is particularly true for fish communities, which are shaped by the physico-chemical properties of coastal waterways that vary greatly in tropical regions. To address this knowledge gap, we used environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding to examine fish assemblages at four locations (three estuaries and a harbour) subjected to varying levels of agricultural run-off during a wet and dry season. Pesticide and nutrient concentrations were markedly elevated during the sampled wet season with the influx of freshwater and agricultural run-off. Fish taxa richness significantly decreased in all three estuaries (F = 164.73, P = <0.001), along with pronounced changes in community composition (F = 46.68, P = 0.001) associated with environmental variables (largely salinity: 27.48% contribution to total variance). In contrast, the nearby Mackay Harbour exhibited a far more stable community structure, with no marked changes in fish assemblages observed between the sampled seasons. Among the four sampled locations, variation in fish community composition was more pronounced within the wet season (F = 2.5, P = 0.001). Notably, variation in the wet season was significantly correlated with agricultural contaminants (phosphorus: 6.25%, pesticides: 5.22%) alongside environmental variables (salinity: 5.61%, DOC: 5.57%). Historically contaminated and relatively unimpacted estuaries each demonstrated distinct fish communities, reflecting their associated catchment use. Our findings emphasise that while seasonal effects play a key role in shaping the community structure of fish in this region, agricultural contaminants are also important contributors in estuarine systems.

Production of Toxins by the Gut Microbiota: The Role of Dietary Protein

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

This narrative review will discuss how the intake of specific protein sources (animal and vegetable) providing specific amino acids can modulate the gut microbiota composition and generate toxins. A better understanding of these interactions could lead to more appropriate dietary recommendations to improve gut health and mitigate the risk of complications promoted by the toxic metabolites formed by the gut microbiota.

RECENT FINDINGS

Gut microbiota is vital in maintaining human health by influencing immune function and key metabolic pathways. Under unfavorable conditions, the gut microbiota can produce excess toxins, which contribute to inflammation and the breakdown of the integrity of the intestinal barrier. Genetic and environmental factors influence gut microbiota diversity, with diet playing a crucial role. Emerging evidence indicates that the gut microbiota significantly metabolizes amino acids from dietary proteins, producing various metabolites with beneficial and harmful effects. Amino acids such as choline, betaine, l-carnitine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan can increase the production of uremic toxins when metabolized by intestinal bacteria. The type of food source that provides these amino acids affects the production of toxins. Plant-based diets and dietary fiber are associated with lower toxin formation than animal-based diets due to the high amino acid precursors in animal proteins.

UV/TiO2 photocatalysis as post-treatment of anaerobic membrane bioreactor effluent for reuse

Advanced oxidation processes have been widely applied as a post-treatment solution to remove residual organic compounds in water reuse schemes. However, UV/TiO2 photocatalysis, which provides a sustainable option with no continuous chemical addition, has very rarely been studied to treat anaerobically treated effluents. In the current study, the removal of organics and nutrients from an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) effluent is evaluated during adsorption and photocatalysis processes under various conditions of TiO2 dose and UV intensity and compared to the effluent from an aerobic membrane bioreactor (AeMBR). The sequence for preferential adsorption on TiO2 was found to be phosphorus, inorganic carbon and then ammonia/organic carbon were found. The competing effect between the organics and nutrients, along with the low UV transmission efficiency caused by the need for high doses of TiO2, ultimately compromise the organic removal efficiency in the AnMBR permeate. TiO2 dosage was found to have a greater impact than UV intensity on improving the overall removal performance as nutrients are competing for the adsorption site but are not photodegraded. Under the same operational condition, the UV/TiO2 photocatalysis displayed a higher removal efficiency of organic matter and phosphorus in the AeMBR effluent due to a lower initial organics concentration and absence of ammonia as compared to the AnMBR effluent.

Nutritional interventional studies in patients with multiple sclerosis: a scoping review of the current clinical evidence

A good nutritional status appears to slow down disease progression and ameliorate symptoms' intensity in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Up to date, there are several interventional studies, which have explored the potential beneficial effects of specific dietary patterns as well as specific bioactive nutrients against disease progression and symptomatology of MS patients. This is a thorough, scoping review, which aims to critically summarize and scrutinize the currently available clinical evidence of the potential beneficial effects of nutritional interventional studies against MS progression and symptomatology. This review was conducted to systematically map the research done in this area, as well as to identify gaps in knowledge. For this purpose, we thoroughly explored the most accurate scientific web databases, e.g., PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to achieve the most relevant clinical human studies applying effective and characteristic keywords. There are currently several dietary patterns and specific bioactive nutrients that show promising results by slowing down disease progression and by improving MS symptoms. However, there are also certain conflicting results, while most of the existing studies enrolled a small number of MS patients. Nutritional interventions may exert substantial protective effects against MS progression and symptomatology. However, large, long-term, randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical trials with a prospective design are strongly recommended to delineate whether such nutritional intervention may attenuate disease progression, and improve symptomatology in MS patients.

Submarine groundwater discharge and ocean acidification: Implications from China's coastal waters

Ocean acidification (OA) is a global environmental concern, and submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is a potentially process that enhances OA. This review summarizes the relationship between two types of constituents carried by SGD into China's seawater and OA. 1) Current research predominantly concentrates on constituent fluxes from SGD, neglecting its ecological impacts on carbon and nutrients budgets, as well as the mechanisms between carbon and nutrients. 2) Uncertainties persist in SGD research methods and acidification characterization. 3) There's a need to enhance quantitative research methods of SGD-OA, particularly in areas with intricate biogeochemical processes. Effective identification methods are crucial to quantify SGD's contribution to OA. Investigating core scientific questions, including SGD's impact on OA rates and scales, is paramount. While the primary focus is on SGD-OA research in China, insights gained from novel perspectives could have broader value for coastal management globally.

Unlocking Agronutrient Resources: Sorption Strategies for sugar-energy industry waste

Vinasse and ash from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) are key byproducts in the sugar-energy industry. Vinasse is nutrient-rich but environmentally challenging, while sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) offers excellent adsorbent for treating effluents. This work aims to assess the effectiveness of SCBA in removing nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) nutrients from Vinasse. Simulated standard solutions of K2SO4 and (NH4)2HPO4 were used to mimic the nutrient concentrations in Vinasse and optimize experimental parameters such as adsorbent mass and contact time. Kinetic and isotherm models were also applied to elucidate the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Structural, morphological, and thermal analyses revealed the micro-mesoporous and heterogeneous nature of SCBA, primarily composed of SiO2 (quartz and cristobalite). The sorption assessment indicated the ideal conditions involved lower SCBA masses (2.5 g) and 6 h of contact time for the simulated standard solutions. The replicated conditions for Vinasse (at an adjusted sorption time of 24 h) demonstrated nutrient sorption and pH correction of the Vinasse, attributed to the alkaline nature of SCBA. Analysis of the sorption kinetic models for K+ and NH4+ revealed that SCBA interacts diffusively with the environment, not necessarily controlled by adsorption on active sites, indicating non-uniform characteristics. The sorption isotherms for K+ and NH4+ showed the non-linearized Freundlich model was the most suitable, indicating the adsorption sites with varying energy levels and a multilayer sorption process. In conclusion, we successfully demonstrated the sorption of nutrients from Vinasse by SCBA, enhancing the value of these residues and mitigating their environmental impact when used in agricultural applications.

Nutrient characteristics driven by multiple factors in large estuaries during summer: A case study of the Yangtze River Estuary

Nutrients directly control the level of primary productivity and are crucial for the stability of marine ecosystems. Focusing on the survey results in August 2020 of the Yangtze River Estuary, this study elucidated the distribution characteristics and controlling factors of three nutrients: NO3-N, PO4-P, SiO3-Si. The results showed that the concentrations of NO3-N, PO4-P, SiO3-Si in the study area were generally higher near the shore than far shore, with average concentrations of 11.40, 0.70, and 23.73 μmol/L, respectively. The ocean currents drove the distribution of nutrients, and the transport of CDW and YSCC increased the nutrient levels. The resuspension of sediment caused by factors such as terrain and weather may lead to an abnormal increase in nutrients in the bottom waters. The main controlling factors of the three nutrients were different. NO3-N was significantly affected by human activities, PO4-P and SiO3-Si were mainly affected by natural factors.

(Phalsa) at Different Fruit Development Stages

Grewia asiatica L. (phalsa) is a very prevalent berry in Pakistan and is consumed extensively as raw or in the form of juice. Here, for the first time, we assessed phalsa from Pakistan in terms of variations in macro and micro minerals, nutrients, and bio-active phyto-constituents including total phenolic and anthocyanin contents at different fruit developmental stages. It was found that the sugars in phalsa increased from D1 (small at the initial fruit setting stage) to D6 development stage (fully ripened fruit) where sugars at D5 (near to fully ripe) and D6 stages were many times greater than at D1, D2 (unripe close to full-size completion), D3 (close to semi ripe), and D4 stage (semi ripened and full-size attainment). Total acidity of was declined in all developmental stages, where the D1 stage displayed maximum and D6 with the lowest acidity. Ascorbic acid was decreased from D1 to D2 and then increased gradually from D3 to D5 stages. At the D6 stage, again a steep decline in ascorbic acid was observed. The total phenolics (mg gallic acid equivalents/100g) at stage D6 were higher (136.02 ± 1.17), whereas D1 being the lowermost in total phenolic content (79.89 ± 1.72). For anthocyanins (mg/100g), an increasing pattern of changes was observed in all stages of phalsa fruit where the D1 stage showed lower (13.97 ± 4.84) anthocyanin contents which then increased gradually at stage D2 (67.79 ± 6.73), but increased sharply at D3 (199.66 ± 4.90), D4 (211.02 ± 18.85), D5 (328.41 ±14.96) and D6 (532.30 ± 8.51) stages. A total of four anthocyanins such as cyanidin, delphidine-3-glucoside, pelargonidin, and malvidin in phalsa were identified using HPLC procedures, and a significant > 90 % DPPH inhibition in phalsa was observed at the D5 and D6 development stages. The macro and micro minerals including Ni, Zn, Fe, Ca, Cu, Mg, Na, P, and K contents were decreased from initial (D1) stage to the final (D6) development stage, while only Fe displayed an increasing trend from the initial to final fruit development stages (D1-D6). Conclusively, these findings could be of great interest for patients who are intended to consume phalsa as adjuvant therapy against diabetes and metabolic syndromes and other diseases involving reactive oxygen species with minimum metal toxicity.

A comprehensive analysis of submarine groundwater discharge and nutrient fluxes in the Bohai Sea, China

Groundwater discharge and associated nutrient fluxes in the Bohai Sea, China has attracted great attention, but most studies lacked high spatial resolution for the whole sea. As the largest semi-enclosed sea in China, the Bohai Sea is confronted with strong environmental pollution problems such as eutrophication induced by terrestrial nutrient inputs. However, the role of SGD has not been evaluated well for the whole Bohai Sea. In this study, stable isotopes (hydrogen and oxygen), radioactive isotope (228Ra), salinity, and temperature were combined to trace the diluted seawater. Mass balances of 228Ra, oxygen isotope, and salinity were used to quantify SGD and nutrient fluxes to the Bohai Sea. The estimated submarine fresh groundwater discharge (SFGD) and SGD to the Bohai Sea were (6.0 ± 0.5) × 109 and (2.7 ± 1.6) × 1011 m3 a-1, respectively. SFGD represents 10 % to 11 % of the total river discharge and SGD is about 2 to 8 folds of the total river discharge to the sea. Moreover, SGD derived dissolved nutrients to the Bohai Sea were (4.8 ± 4.0) × 1010 mol a-1 for dissolved inorganic nitrogen, (1.9 ± 1.7) × 1010 mol a-1 for dissolved inorganic phosphorus, and (6.7 ± 5.5) × 1010 mol a-1 for silicon. These nutrient inputs were about 10 to 20 folds of the total riverine inputs. Overall, this study underscores the importance of evaluating SGD to better understand the terrestrial imported nutrients in regional scale.

Impacts of cobalt and zinc on improving peanuts nutrient uptake, yield and irrigation water use efficiency under different irrigation levels

The knowledge of proper fertigation across various irrigation levels is necessary for maximizing peanut yield and irrigation use efficiency in arid areas, and it also can effectively alleviate the risk of nutrient deficiency induced by water stress. This study evaluated the effectiveness of cobalt combined with two zinc application methods on peanut nutrient uptake, yield, and irrigation water use efficiency across varying irrigation levels. A split-split plot experiment was carried out in 2021 and 2022. Three peanut gross water requirement (GWR) levels (100%, 80%, and 60%) were designated for main plots. Subplots featured plants treated with either 0 or 7.5 mg L-1 of cobalt. The sub-sub plots assessed chelated zinc effects at rates of 0 and 2 g L-1 via foliar and soil applications. In comparison to the control (100% GWR), nutrient uptake decreased, with sodium being the exception, and there was an increase in soil pH at 60% GWR. The results showed also significant reductions in yield and water use by approximately 60.3% and 38.1%, respectively. At this irrigation level, applying zinc via soil, either alone or combined with cobalt, led to significant yield increases of 89.7% and 191.3% relative to the control. Also, it's crucial to note that cobalt application negatively affected iron and copper at 60% GWR, but this impact was lessened with soil-applied zinc. Hence, under a similar circumstance, treating stressed peanut plants with additional foliar applications of iron + copper and applying zinc via soil, could enhance nutrient uptake and improve yield. On the other hand, at 80% GWR, a combination of foliar-applied zinc and cobalt, had a tremendous impact on the absorption of (nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium, and zinc), resulting in enhanced agronomic traits and decreased water losses. Additionally, at this irrigation level, foliar zinc application alone yielded a 32.4% increase compared to the 80% GWR control. When combined with cobalt, there was a 70.0% surge in water use. Based on this knowledge, the study suggests using 80% GWR and treating peanut plants with a combination of foliar-applied zinc and cobalt. This strategy aids plants in countering the adverse effects of water stress, ultimately leading to enhanced yield and irrigation water use efficiency.

Effect of intraspecific seed trait variation on the germination of eight tropical dry forest species

Functional traits can have intraspecific and interspecific variations essential in the structure and dynamics of natural communities. These traits may have implications in the germination and seedling establishment phases in seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of variations in mass, volume, and nutrient content (C, N, and P) on the germination of eight species representative of the tropical dry forest (TDF). Our results showed that seed size, both in terms of mass and volume, did not predict germination rates or percentages, nor were they related to nutrient content. In contrast, N content was the most important trait in the germination phase. Larger seeds did not germinate more or faster, but they could offer better resistance against desiccation, since they had higher C/N ratios in their tissues, a characteristic of orthodox seeds. The species A. guachapele, B. arborea, H. crepitans, and V. tortuosa presented a high biological potential in terms of their regeneration capacity, particularly, because the characteristics of their seeds, as well as the nutrient content, revealed consistent implications in their reproductive success, promoting high germination percentages in less time. In general, the results obtained in this study provide basic knowledge for future research, offering starting points for further exploration of species-specific adaptations and how they may be affected by the environment.

Photoheterotroph improved the growth and nutrient levels of Chlorella vulgaris and the related molecular mechanism

Microalgae are rich in fatty acids, proteins, and other nutrients, which have gained the general attention of researchers all over the world. For the development of Chlorella vulgaris in food and feed industry, this study was conducted to investigate the differences in C. vulgaris' growth and nutritional components under different culture conditions (autotrophic, heterotrophic, photoheterotrophic) and the internal factors through cell counting in combination with transcriptome and nutrient analyses. The results showed that, under the photoheterotrophic condition, Chlorella's growth and the contents of lipid and protein were significantly higher than that under the heterotrophic condition, and the moisture content was lower than that under the heterotrophic condition. The saturated fatty acid content under the photoheterotrophic condition was the lowest, while the polyunsaturated fatty acid content was significantly higher than those under the other two conditions. There were 46,583 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 33,039 up-regulated DEGs (70.93%) and 13,544 down-regulated DEGs (29.07%), under the photoheterotrophic condition in comparison with the autotrophic condition. The fold change between the two conditions of samples of up-regulated genes was higher than that of the down-regulated genes. The KEGG enrichment showed that the up-regulated DEGs in the photoheterotrophic condition were significantly enriched in 5 pathways, including protein processing in endoplasmic reticulum pathway, photosynthesis pathway, photosynthesis-antenna protein pathway, endocytosis pathway, and phosphonate and phosphinate metabolism pathway. DEGs related to fatty acid metabolic pathways were significantly enriched in the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway and the biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acid pathway. The qPCR analysis showed that the expression pattern of the selected genes was consistent with that of transcriptome analysis. The results of this study lay a theoretical foundation for the large-scale production of Chlorella and its application in food, feed, and biodiesel. Evaluation study of single-anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy in the treatment of Chinese obese patients based on efficacy and nutrition

To evaluate the efficacy and nutrition of single-anastomosis duodenal-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy (SADI-S) in Chinese obese patients in the first postoperative year. Clinical data of 66 obese patients who underwent SADI-S surgery at China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University from November 2018 to May 2022 were retrospectively collected. The weight, body mass index (BMI), percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL), and percentage of total weight loss (%TWL) were recorded at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. Moreover, metabolic disease remission and nutrient deficiencies were assessed at 1 year postoperatively. Overall, 66 patients (38 males and 28 females) were recruited, with a mean age of 35 (18-61) years and an average preoperative BMI of 42.94 kg/m2. Before surgery, 38 patients had type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), 46 patients had hyperuricemia (HUA), 45 patients had hypertension (HTN), 35 patients had hyperlipidemia, 12 patients had hypercholesterolemia, 12 patients had hyper-low-density lipoproteinemia, and 14 patients had gastroesophageal reflux disease symptoms (GERD). All patients had undergone a DaVinci robotic or laparoscopic SADI-S surgery, and none converted to laparotomy or died. Four patients developed postoperative complications and were cured and discharged after conservative treatment or surgical treatment. At 3, 6 and 12 months, the average %EWL was 62.07 ± 26.56, 85.93 ± 27.92, and 106.65 ± 29.65%, %TWL was 22.67 ± 4.94, 32.10 ± 5.18, and 40.56 ± 7.89%, respectively. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), uric acid (UA), triglycerides (TG), blood pressure (BP), and other indexes were significantly lower after one year post-surgery compared with the preoperative period (P < 0.05). The remission rates of T2DM, HUA, HTN, hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hyper-low-density lipoproteinemia 1 year after surgery were 100, 65.2, 62.2, 94.3, 100, and100%, respectively. One year after surgery, the remission rate of GERD was 71.4% (10/14), the rate of new occurrence of GERD was 12.1% (8/66), and the overall incidence rate was 18.2% (12/66). Except for vitamin B12(vit B12), the other nutrient indexes were significantly decreased after 1 year of surgery relative to levels before surgery (P < 0.05). The deficiency rates for vitamin A (vit A), vitamin E (vit E), zinc ion (Zn), and folic acid (FA) were higher (45.5, 25.8, 24.2, and 16.7%, respectively); however, there were no related clinical symptoms. SADI-S had significant effects on weight loss and metabolic disease remission. The main nutrient deficiencies after SADI-S were vit A, vit E, Zn, and FA deficiencies. Prioritizing ecological restoration in hydrologically sensitive areas to improve groundwater quality

Greening is the optimal way to mitigate climate change and water quality degradation caused by agricultural expansion and rapid urbanization. However, the ideal sites to plant trees or grass to achieve a win-win solution between the environment and the economy remain unknown. Here, we performed a nationwide survey on groundwater nutrients (nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, dissolved reactive phosphorus) and heavy metals (vanadium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, arsenic, strontium, molybdenum, cadmium, and lead) in China, and combined it with the global/national soil property database and machine learning (random forest) methods to explore the linkages between land use within hydrologically sensitive areas (HSAs) and groundwater quality from the perspective of hydrological connectivity. We found that HSAs occupy approximately 20 % of the total land area and are hotspots for transferring nutrients and heavy metals from the land surface to the saturated zone. In particular, the proportion of natural lands within HSAs significantly contributes 8.0 % of the variability in groundwater nutrients and heavy metals in China (p < 0.01), which is equivalent to their contribution (8.8 %) at the regional scale (radius = 4 km, area = 50 km2). Increasing the proportion of natural lands within HSAs improves groundwater quality, as indicated by the significant reduction in the concentrations of nitrate nitrogen, manganese, arsenic, strontium, and molybdenum (p < 0.05). These new findings suggest that prioritizing ecological restoration in HSAs is conducive to achieving the harmony between the environment (improving groundwater quality) and economy (reducing investment in area management).

Filling the agronomic data gap through a minimum data collection approach

Context

Agronomic data such as applied inputs, management practices, and crop yields are needed for assessing productivity, nutrient balances, resource use efficiency, as well as other aspects of environmental and economic performance of cropping systems. In many instances, however, these data are only available at a coarse level of aggregation or simply do not exist.

Objectives

Here we developed an approach that identifies sites for agronomic data collection for a given crop and country, seeking a balance between minimizing data collection efforts and proper representation of the main crop producing areas.

Methods

The developed approach followed a stratified sampling method based on a spatial framework that delineates major climate zones and crop area distribution maps, which guides selection of sampling areas (SA) until half of the national harvested area is covered. We provided proof of concept about the robustness of the approach using three rich databases including data on fertilizer application rates for maize, wheat, and soybean in Argentina, soybean in the USA, and maize in Kenya, which were collected via local experts (Argentina) and field surveys (USA and Kenya). For validation purposes, fertilizer rates per crop and nutrient derived at (sub-) national level following our approach were compared against those derived using all data collected from the whole country.

Results

Application of the approach in Argentina, USA, and Kenya resulted in selection of 12, 28, and 10 SAs, respectively. For each SA, three experts or 20 fields were sufficient to give a robust estimate of average fertilizer rates applied by farmers. Average rates at national level derived from our approach compared well with those derived using the whole database ( ± 10 kg N, ± 2 kg P, ± 1 kg S, and ± 5 kg K per ha) requiring less than one third of the observations.

Conclusions

The developed minimum crop data collection approach can fill the agronomic data gaps in a cost-effective way for major crop systems both in large- and small-scale systems.

Significance

The proposed approach is generic enough to be applied to any crop-country combination to guide collection of key agricultural data at national and subnational levels with modest investment especially for countries that do not currently collect data.

Quality matters: Response of bacteria and ciliates to different allochthonous dissolved organic matter sources as a pulsed disturbance in shallow lakes

Shallow lake ecosystems are particularly prone to disturbances such as pulsed dissolved organic matter (allochthonous-DOM; hereafter allo-DOM) loadings from catchments. However, the effects of allo-DOM with contrasting quality (in addition to quantity) on the planktonic communities of microbial loop are poorly understood. To determine the impact of different qualities of pulsed allo-DOM disturbance on the coupling between bacteria and ciliates, we conducted a mesocosm experiment with two different allo-DOM sources added to mesocosms in a single-pulse disturbance event: Alder tree leaf extract, a more labile (L) source and HuminFeed® (HF), a more recalcitrant source. Allo-DOM sources were used as separate treatments and in combination (HFL) relative to the control without allo-DOM additions (C). Our results indicate that the quality of allo-DOM was a major regulator of planktonic microbial community biomass and/or composition through which both bottom-up and top-down forces were involved. Bacteria biomass showed significant nonlinear responses in L and HFL with initial increases followed by decreases to pre-pulse conditions. Ciliate biomass was significantly higher in L compared to all other treatments. In terms of composition, bacterivore ciliate abundance was significantly higher in both L and HFL treatments, mainly driven by the bacterial biomass increase in the same treatments. GAMM models showed negative interaction between metazoan zooplankton biomass and ciliates, but only in the L treatment, indicating top-down control on ciliates. Ecosystem stability analyses revealed overperformance, high resilience and full recovery of bacteria in the HFL and L treatments, while ciliates showed significant shift in compositional stability in HFL and L with incomplete taxonomic recovery. Our study highlights the importance of allo-DOM quality shaping the response within the microbial loop not only through triggering different scenarios in biomass, but also the community composition, stability, and species interactions (top-down and bottom-up) in bacteria and plankton.

Recent Advances in the Crosstalk between Brassinosteroids and Environmental Stimuli

Due to their sessile lifestyle, plants need to optimize their growth in order to adapt to ever-changing environments. Plants receive stimuli from the environment and convert them into cellular responses. Brassinosteroids (BRs), as growth-promoting steroid hormones, play a significant role in the tradeoff between growth and environmental responses. Here, we provide a comprehensive summary for understanding the crosstalk between BR and various environmental stresses, including water availability, temperature fluctuations, salinization, nutrient deficiencies and diseases. We also highlight the bottlenecks that need to be addressed in future studies. Ultimately, we suppose to improve plant environmental adaptability and crop yield by excavating natural BR mutants or modifying BR signaling and its targets.

Atmospheric deposition of mineral dust and associated nutrients over the Equatorial Indian Ocean

Aerosols are potential supplier of nutrients to the surface water of oceans and can impact biogeochemical processes particularly in the remote locations. The nutrient data from atmospheric supply is poorly reported from the Indian Ocean region. In this study, we present atmospheric nutrients such as reactive nitrogen species (Nitrate, Ammonium, Organic nitrogen), micro-nutrients (e.g. Fe, Mn and Cu) concentration along with mineral dust in the aerosol samples collected over meridional transect during summer (April-May 2018) and monsoon (June-July 2019) months. A significant spatial variation of dust was observed during summer (0.6-22.8 μg m-3) and monsoon (2.8-25.1 μg m-3) months with a decreasing trend from north to south. Dust as well as other nutrient species shows a general north to south decreasing trend, however, no such trend was seen in the soluble trace elements (TEs) concentration. Anthropogenic species like NH4+ and nss-K+ were found below detection limit during monsoon campaign. The fractional solubility (in percentage) of Fe, Mn and Cu were estimated by measuring their concentration in ultrapure water leach which averaged around 0.99 ± 1.12, 31.0 ± 14.9 and 31.1 ± 25.4, respectively during summer and 0.09 ± 0.08, 6.0 ± 8.9, 16.7 ± 9.6, respectively, during monsoon period. Correlation of soluble Fe with total Fe and total acidic species suggest varying dust sources is an important controlling factor for the fraction solubility of Fe with negligible contribution from the chemical processing. However, a significant correlation was observed between total acid and fractional solubility of Mn and Cu suggest role of chemical processing in enhancement of their solubility. Dry deposition flux of aeolian dust was estimated for both campaign using Al concentration and relatively higher fluxes were observed for summer (12.6 ± 8.4 mg·m-2·d-1) and monsoon (8.7 ± 8.4 mg·m-2·d-1) months as compared to model based estimates reported in the literature. Contrastingly, estimated deposition flux of soluble Fe from both campaign displays relatively lower values as compared to model based results which underscores a need for re-evaluation of biogeochemical models with real-time data.

Modelling of high-rate activated sludge process: Assessment of model parameters by sensitivity and uncertainty analyses

The objective of this study is to develop a mechanistic model to predict the long-term dynamic performance of High-Rate Activated Sludge (HRAS) process, including the removal of carbon (COD), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P). The model was formulated with inspiration from Activated Sludge Models No. 1 and 3 (ASM1 and ASM3) to incorporate essential mechanisms, such as adsorption and storage substrate, specific to HRAS systems. A stepwise protocol was followed for calibration with dynamic data from a pilot-scale HRAS plant. Sensitivity analysis identified influential model parameters, including maximum specific growth rate (μ), growth yield (YH), storage yield (YSTO), storage rate (kSTO), decay rate (b), and half saturation of the readily biodegradable substrate for growth (KS1). The calibrated model achieved prediction efficiencies above the normalized Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 70 % for mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD), soluble COD (SCOD), particulate COD (XCOD), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (SNH), total phosphorus (TP), soluble TP (STP), and particulate TP (XTP). Uncertainty analysis revealed that SCOD was underestimated. Based on the dynamic profiles of uncertainty bands and observed data, there is potential for improving the estimation of dynamic behavior in STP. The observed discrepancies may be attributed to variations in wastewater characteristics during the monitoring period, particularly concerning the phosphorus (P) fractions of the readily biodegradable substrate (SS) and soluble inerts (SI), which were not considered as dynamically changing parameters in the model.

Stoichiometric microplastics models in natural and laboratory environments

Microplastics pose a severe threat to marine ecosystems; however, relevant mathematical modeling and analysis are lacking. This paper formulates two stoichiometric producer-grazer models to investigate the interactive effects of microplastics, nutrients, and light on population dynamics under different settings. One model incorporates optimal microplastic uptake and foraging behavior based on nutrient availability for natural settings, while the other model does not include foraging in laboratory settings. We establish the well-posedness of the models and examine their long-term behaviors. Our results reveal that in natural environments, producers and grazers exhibit higher sensitivity to microplastics, and the system may demonstrate bistability or tristability. Moreover, the influences of microplastics, nutrients, and light intensity are highly intertwined. The presence of microplastics amplifies the constraints on grazer growth related to food quality and quantity imposed by extreme light intensities, while elevated phosphorus input enhances the system's resistance to intense light conditions. Furthermore, higher environmental microplastic levels do not always imply elevated microplastic body burdens in organisms, as organisms are also influenced by nutrients and light. We also find that grazers are more vulnerable to microplastics, compared to producers. If producers can utilize microplastics for growth, the system displays significantly greater resilience to microplastics.

Continuous co-treatment of mine drainage with municipal wastewater

Acid mine drainage (AMD) and municipal wastewater (MWW) are commonly co-occurring waste streams in mining regions. Co-treating AMD at existing wastewater facilities represents an innovative solution for simultaneous AMD reclamation and improved MWW treatment. However, unknowns related to biological processes and continuous treatment performance block full-scale use. The overarching goal of this work was to address questions related to efficacy and performance of continuous processing of AMD in a biological MWW treatment system. Synthetic AMD was co-treated with synthetic MWW in a continuously-operating bench-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR). SBRs treated MWW with two strengths of AMD (91 and 720 mg/L as CaCO3 Acidity) to capture the variations of coal AMD chemistry and strength observed in the field. Each co-treatment phases lasted 40+ days, during which clarified effluent and settled sludge quality was routinely monitored to determine impacts of co-treatment relative to conventional MWW treatment performance. Co-treatment produced effluent that met key standards for secondary treatment including biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) < 5 mg/L, total suspended solids (TSS) < 20 mg/L, and pH ∼7.0. Addition of AMD also improved treatment performance, increasing Phosphate (PO4) removal by >60% and pathogen removal by an order of magnitude. Furthermore, AMD co-treatment did not exhibit any major impacts on the overall diversity of the wastewater microbial community. Co-treatment sludge had slightly higher settleability and a lower bound water content, but notable changes in sludge morphology was observed. This study demonstrates co-treatment allows for continuous mitigation of AMD without adversely impacting MWW treatment performance in conventional biological MWW processes.

Response of dissolved carbon dioxide and methane concentration to warming in shallow lakes

Shallow lake ecosystems are highly sensitive to temperature fluctuation because of their high water surface-to-volume ratios. Shallow lakes have been increasingly identified as a hotspot of CO2 and CH4 emissions, but their response to temperature variation remains unclear. Here, we report from a 5-month outdoor mesocosm experiment where we investigated the impacts of a projected 3.5 °C future warming and monthly temperature changes on lake CO2 and CH4, as well as the key drivers affecting the lake carbon cycling. Our results show that CO2 and CH4 concentrations had a significantly positive correlation with monthly temperatures. CH4 concentration was primarily regulated by monthly temperature, while nutrients effects on CO2 concentration overrode climate warming and temporal temperature changes. These findings imply the varied roles that temperature and nutrient levels can play on CO2 and CH4 dynamics in shallow lake systems. The relationship between temperature and CO2 concentration was nonlinear, showing a threshold of approximately 9 °C, at which CO2 concentration could be strongly modified by nutrient level in the lake systems. Understanding this complex relationship between temperature with CO2 and CH4 concentrations in shallow lakes is crucial for effective lake management and efficient control of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions.

Temperature and local anthropogenic pressures limit stony coral assemblage viability in southeast Florida

Climate change is viewed as the primary threat to coral reefs, with local pressures exacerbating coral cover decline. The consensus is that improving water quality may increase resilience, but disentangling water quality and temperature impacts is difficult. We used distance-based linear models and random forests to analyze spatiotemporal variation in benthic community structure and interannual changes in the coral assemblage, in relation to specific environmental metrics in Southeast Florida. Temperature accounted for most of the variation, recruitment doubled and interannual increases in coral abundance tripled when mean annual temperature reached 27 °C, until maximum temperatures exceeded 31 °C. Benefits associated with warmer temperatures were negated by poor water quality, as nutrient enrichment was related to increased macroalgal cover, reduced coral recruitment and higher coral partial mortality. We suggest reducing local pressures will contribute to reduced macroalgae and enhance coral recovery, but that temperature is the predominant influence on coral assemblages.

Selective separation of nutrients and volatile fatty acids from food wastes using electrodialysis and membrane contactor for resource valorization

Transport and selectivity parameters describe the quantity and purity of nutrients and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) separated from fermentation media. However, the complexity of fermentation media and low nutrient concentrations hinder the optimal conditions of such parameters. Exploring technologies to overcome such limitations is crucial for selectively separating VFAs from nutrients in fermented media. The objectives of this study were to investigate the: (1) flux, (2) recovery, (3) concentration factor, and (4) specific energy consumption of nutrients (NH4+, K+, NO3-, and PO43-) and VFAs (acetic, propionic, and butyric acid) via electrodialysis (ED), and (5) selectively separate the VFAs from the nutrients in the ED concentrate using a hydrophobic membrane contactor (HMC). Synthetic feed and real industrial fermented food wastes were used for ED and HMC experiments. The ED consumed 0.395 kWh/kg, recovering 64-95% of the nutrients and VFAs, corresponding to 4.1-9.4 and 0.6-22.1 g/L nutrients and VFAs, respectively. The HMC selectively separated over 94% of VFAs after ED, with <2% nutrients contamination in the final VFA stream. The results suggest that applying HMC after ED can concentrate and selectively separate VFAs from nutrients in fermented food wastes, which can be valorized for bio-based fertilizers and chemical platforms.

Arbuscular mycorrhizae reduced arsenic induced oxidative stress by coordinating nutrient uptake and proline-glutathione levels in Cicer arietinum L. (chickpea)

Accumulation of Arsenic (As) generates oxidative stress by reducing nutrients availability in plants. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis can impart metalloid tolerance in plants by enhancing the synthesis of sulfur (S)-rich peptides (glutathione- GSH) and low-molecular-weight nitrogenous (N) osmolytes (proline- Pro). The present study, therefore investigated the efficiency of 3 AM fungal species (Rhizoglomus intraradices-Ri, Funneliformis mosseae -Fm and Claroideoglomus claroideum- Cc) in imparting As (arsenate-AsV -40 at 60 mg kg-1 and arsenite- AsIII at 5 and 10 mg kg-1) tolerance in two Cicer arietinum (chickpea) genotypes (HC 3 and C 235). As induced significantly higher negative impacts in roots than shoots, which was in accordance with proportionately higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the former, with AsIII more toxic than AsV. Mycorrhizal symbiosis overcame oxidative stress by providing the host plants with necessary nutrients (P, N, and S) through enhanced microbial enzyme activities (MEAs) in soil, which increased the synthesis of Pro and GSH and established a redox balance in the two genotypes. This coordination between nutrient status, Pro-GSH levels, and antioxidant defense was stronger in HC 3 than C 235 due to its higher responsiveness to the three AM species. However, Ri was most beneficial in inducing redox homeostasis, followed by Fm and Cc, since the Cicer arietinum-Ri combination displayed the maximum ability to boost antioxidant defense mechanisms and establish a coordination with Pro synthesis. Thus, the results highlighted the importance of selecting specific chickpea genotypes having an ability to establish effective mycorrhizal symbiosis for imparting As stress tolerance.

Past environmental changes: using sedimentary photosynthetic pigments to enhance subtropical reservoir management

The historical impacts of eutrophication processes were investigated in six subtropical reservoirs (São Paulo, Brazil) using a paleolimnological approach. We questioned whether the levels of pigment indicators of algal biomass could provide information about trophic increase and whether carotenoid pigments could offer additional insights. The following proxies were employed: organic matter, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, photosynthetic pigments (by high-performance liquid chromatography), sedimentation rates, and geochronology (by 210 Pb technique). Principal component analysis indicated a gradient of eutrophication. In eutrophic reservoirs (e.g., Rio Grande and Salto Grande), levels of lutein and zeaxanthin increased over time, suggesting growth of Chlorophyta and Cyanobacteria. These pigments were significantly associated with algal biomass, reflecting their participation in phytoplankton composition. In mesotrophic reservoirs, Broa and Itupararanga, increases and significative linear correlations (r > 0.70) between pigments and nutrients are mainly linked to agricultural and urban activities. In the oligotrophic reservoir Igaratá, lower pigment and nutrient levels reflected lesser human impact and good water quality. This study underscores eutrophication's complexity across subtropical reservoirs. Photosynthetic pigments associated with specific algal groups were informative, especially when correlated with nutrient data. The trophic increase, notably in the 1990s, may have been influenced by neoliberal policies. Integrated pigment and geochemical analysis offers a more precise understanding of eutrophication changes and their ties to human factors. Such research can aid environmental monitoring and sustainable policy development.

Identifying Children at Risk of Growth and Nutrient Deficiencies in the Food Allergy Clinic

BACKGROUND

Food allergies affect growth in children by decreasing the availability of nutrients through decreased dietary intake, increased dietary needs, food-medication interactions, and psychosocial burden. Guidelines on food allergy management frequently recommend nutrition counseling and growth monitoring of children with food allergies.

OBJECTIVE

To provide clear guidance for clinicians to identify children with food allergies who are at nutritional risk and ensure prompt intervention.

METHODS

We provide a narrative review summarizing information from national and international guidelines, retrospective studies, population studies, review articles, case reports, and case series to identify those with food allergy at greatest nutritional risk, determine the impact of nutritional interventions on growth, and develop guidance for risk reduction in children with food allergies.

RESULTS

Children with food allergies are at increased risk of nutritional deficiencies and poor growth. Nutritional assessment and intervention can improve outcomes. Identifying poor growth is an important step in the nutrition assessment. Therefore, growth should be assessed at each allergy evaluation. Interventions to ensure adequate dietary intake for growth include appropriately prescribed elimination diets, breast-feeding support and assessment, supplemental formula, vitamin and/or mineral supplementation, appropriate milk substitutes, and timely introduction of nutrient-dense complementary foods. Access to foods of appropriate nutritional value is an ongoing concern.

CONCLUSION

Nutrition intervention or referral to registered dietitian nutritionists with additional training and/or experience in food allergy may result in improved growth and nutrition outcomes.

Impact of atmospheric deposition on the dynamics of ultraphytoplanktonic populations in the Gulf of Gabès during an intense dust event (MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE campaign)

The ultraphytoplankton composition and dynamics were assessed during a Saharan dust event occurring off the southern Tunisian coasts during the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE Trans-Mediterranean oceanographic cruise. The composition of atmospheric dust was characterized in terms of nutriments and trace metals. Data-assimilative hydrodynamic model revealed no differences in the hydrological features along the sampling track and almost no water transport occurred during the period of atmospheric deposition. Dust deposition increased the growth rates and the productivity of the major phytoplanktonic cytometric groups, resulting in the highest surface biomass along the Mediterranean transect. One group, distinguished by low fluorescence and nanoplanktonic size, reacted to dust deposition within hours, exhibiting the highest growth rate and net productivity. The dust composition showed a substantial enrichment with organic phosphorous representing (56 % of Total phosphorus) and trace metals mainly Fe, Mn and V.

Ecological role of reed belts in lakeside zone: Impacts on nutrient retention and bacterial community assembly during Hydrilla verticillata decomposition

Reed belts acting as basic nutrient filters are important parts of lake buffer riparian zones. However, little is known about their impacts on nutrient release and bacterial community during plant litter decomposition. In this study, a field experiment was conducted in west-lake Taihu to monitor the changes in nutrients, bacterial enzymatic activities, and bacterial community in plant debris during Hydrilla verticillata (H. verticillata) decomposition in open water (HvC) and reed belts (HvL) area for 126 days. We found that there was lower temperature but higher nutrient concentrations in overlying water in HvL than HvC. Partial least squares path modeling revealed that environmental parameters in overlying water had important impacts on bacterial activities and nutrient release (such as alkaline phosphatase, cellulase, and soluble sugar) and therefore affected dissolved organic matter components in plant debris. According to Illumina sequencing, 46,003 OTUs from 10 dominant phyla were obtained and Shannon index was higher in HvL than HvC at the same sampling time. Neutral community model explained 49% of bacterial community variance and immigration rate by the estimate of dispersal in HvC (Nm: 27,154) and HvL (Nm: 25,765), respectively. Null model showed stochastic factors governed the bacterial community assembly in HvC (66.67%) and HvL (87.28%). TP and pH were key factors affecting the bacterial community structure at the phylum level. More hubs and complex interactions among bacteria were observed in HvL than HvC. Function analysis showed bacterial community had important role in carbon, organic phosphorus, and nitrogen removal but phosphorus-starvation was detected in debris of H. verticillata. This study provides useful information for understanding the changes in nutrients and bacterial community in litter during H. verticillata decomposition and highlights the role of reed belts on retained plant litter to protect lake from pollution.

Differences in mineral and osmotic balances enhance zinc translocation in an aquaporin overexpressing poplar

Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plants, but it is toxic beyond a certain threshold. Populus alba (L.) 'Villafranca' clone is known for its good tolerance to high Zn concentration compared to other poplar species. A line of this species overexpressing the tonoplast intrinsic aquaporin AQUA1 gene has showed an improved tolerance to Zn excess in comparison to the wild-type (wt) line. The aims of this work were to: 1) verify if AQUA1 plants can uptake Zn more efficiently after a longer period of exposure; 2) evaluate if a higher Zn uptake in transgenic lines can have negative effects; 3) assess Zn competing elements (iron and manganese), soluble sugars, osmolytes, and potassium to investigate differences in water and osmotic homeostasis between lines. Under Zn excess, AQUA1 plants showed a twofold Zn translocation factor and a higher xylem sap Zn concentration than the wt plants. Transgenic plants preferentially allocated Zn in aerial biomass and this different behaviour matched with modified manganese and iron balances suggesting that the increased Zn uptake might be related to a decrease in iron transport in the transgenic line. Moreover, a higher instantaneous water use efficiency in control conditions and an increase in bark soluble sugars under Zn excess could allow a higher resistance of AQUA1 plants to the water and osmotic perturbations caused by Zn. Indeed, the Zn excess increased the xylem osmolyte content only in wt plants. Further investigations are required to understand the role of AQUA1 in osmotic regulation.

Dietary Co-supplements attenuate the chronic unpredictable mild stress-induced depression in mice

Does it make a difference what we eat when it comes to our mental health? Food and nutrients are essential not only for human biology and physical appearance but also for mental and emotional well-being. There has been a significant increase in the favourable effects of dietary supplements in the treatment of depressive state in the latest days. Co-supplements which can be a great contribution in the management of depression from the future perspective and might help to reduce standard anti-depressant drug doses, which can be a strategic way to reduce the side effect of standard anti-depressants drugs. This study was designed to evaluate and compare the anti-depressant effects of cholecalciferol-D3 (V.D3), n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), and a combination of V.D3 + n-3 PUFA with fluoxetine treatment in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) induced depression in the mice model. We established CUMS depressant mice model and treated CUMS mice with V.D3, n-3 PUFA, and a combination of V.D3 + n-3 PUFA with fluoxetine. Behavioral changes were measured by the forced swim and tail suspension test. Oxidative stress markers and anti-depressant activity were assessed through parameters such as superoxide dismutase, reduced glutathione, lipid peroxidation, and serum corticosterone levels. Additionally, we measured the levels of neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin. CUMS induced mice displayed depressive-like behaviours. Moreover, cholecalciferol-D3, n-3 PUFA, and a combination of Cholecalciferol-D3 + n-3 PUFA with fluoxetine treatment attenuated the depressive-like behaviour in CUMS mice accompanied with suppression of oxidative stress markers by up-regulated the expression of an antioxidant signalling pathway. The results suggested that treatment of cholecalciferol-D3, n-3 PUFA, and a combination of Cholecalciferol-D3 + n-3 PUFA with fluoxetine significantly ameliorated depressive-like behaviours in CUMS induced depression in mice. To delve further into the implications of these findings, future studies could explore the specific molecular mechanisms underlying the observed effects on oxidative stress markers and the antioxidant signaling pathway. This could provide valuable insights into the potential of dietary supplements in the management of depression and help in reducing the reliance on conventional antidepressant medications, thus improving the overall quality of treatment for this prevalent mental health condition.
