Abstract
BACKGROUND Growing evidence supports the ergogenic effects of creatine supplementation on muscle power/strength, but its effects on endurance performance remain unclear. We assessed the effects of high-dose short-term creatine supplementation in professional cyclists during a training camp. METHODS The study followed a double-blind, randomized parallel design. Twenty-three professional U23 cyclists (19 ± 1 years, maximum oxygen uptake: 73.0 ± 4.6 mL/kg/min) participated in a 6-day training camp. Participants were randomized to consume daily either a recovery drink (containing carbohydrates and protein) with a 20-g creatine supplement (creatine group, n = 11) or just the recovery drink (placebo group, n = 12). Training loads and dietary intake were monitored, and indicators of fatigue/recovery (Hooper index, countermovement jump height), body composition, and performance (10-second sprint, 3-, 6-, and 12-minute time trials, respectively, as well as critical power and W') were assessed as study outcomes. RESULTS The training camp resulted in a significant (p < 0.001) increase of training loads (+50% for total training time and + 61% for training stress score, compared with the preceding month) that in turn induced an increase in fatigue indicators (significant time effect [p < 0.001] for delayed-onset muscle soreness, fatigue, and total Hooper index) and a decrease in performance (significant time effect [p = 0.020] for critical power, which decreased by -3.8%). However, no significant group-by-time interaction effect was found for any of the study outcomes (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS High-dose short-term creatine supplementation seems to exert no consistent beneficial effects on recovery, body composition or performance indicators during a strenuous training period in professional cyclists.

Abstract
To overcome the disadvantages of severe emulsification and difficulty in obtaining free oil during aqueous extraction of peanut oil, the effect of roasting assisted aqueous ethanol extraction on free oil recovery was investigated. When peanut kernels were roasted at 180 °C for 10 min, free oil recovery increased from 57% to 96%, and the acid and peroxide values of the peanut oil met the requirements of good quality. The degree of hydration swelling of proteins in the extract increased, and soluble solids were easier to aggregate, resulting in reduced emulsification and significantly higher free oil recovery. The roasting conditions selected were found to significantly promote protein hydrophilicity, aggregation and fusion of oil bodies, as well as cell rupture, which facilitated the release of free oil but with a lower degree of protein denaturation. This study may promote the practical application of aqueous extraction technology for peanut oil.

Abstract
International guidelines endorse psychological treatment for Bipolar Disorder (BD); however, the absence of a recognised gold-standard intervention requires further research. A Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) skills group intervention with 12 sessions was developed. This pilot randomised controlled trial (RCT) aims to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and outcomes variance of Bi-REAL - Respond Effectively, Assertively, and Live mindfully, tailored for individuals with BD, in preparation for a future RCT. METHODS 52 participants (female = 62.7 %; mean age = 43.2 ± 11.1) with BD were randomised by blocks to either the experimental group (EG; n = 26; Bi-REAL + Treatment as Usual, TAU) receiving 12 weekly 90-minutes sessions, or the control group (CG; n = 26, TAU). Feasibility and acceptability were assessed with a multimethod approach (qualitative interviews, semi-structured clinical interviews and a battery of self-report questionnaires - candidate main outcomes Bipolar Recovery Questionnaire (BRQ) and brief Quality of Life for Bipolar Disorder (QoL.BD)). All participants were evaluated at baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1) and 3-month follow-up (T2). RESULTS Acceptability was supported by participants' positive feedback and ratings of the sessions and programme overall, as well as the treatment attendance (86.25 % of sessions attended). The trial overall retention rate was 74.5 %, with CG having a higher dropout rate across the 3-timepoints (42.31 %). A significant Time × Group interaction effect was found for BRQ and QoL.BD favouring the intervention group (p < .05). LIMITATIONS The assessors were not blind at T1 (only at T2). Recruitment plan was impacted due to COVID-19 restrictions and replication is questionable. High attrition rates in the CG. CONCLUSIONS The acceptability of Bi-REAL was sustained, and subsequent feasibility testing will be necessary to establish whether the retention rates of the overall trial improve and if feasibility is confirmed, before progressing to a definitive trial.

Abstract
Purpose Sexual minority (SM; e.g., gay, lesbian, bisexual) individuals are disproportionately impacted by alcohol and other drug (AOD) use disorders and psychosocial factors that can exacerbate AOD use disorders and hinder recovery. This study examines SM sub-group differences (monosexual [gay/lesbian] versus bisexual) regarding adaptation to recovery measured by indices of psychosocial functioning. Identifying differential needs of gay/lesbian versus bisexual individuals could improve services to better meet the needs of SM individuals in recovery. Methods Using data from the National Recovery Study, a nationally representative cross-sectional sample of US adults who reported resolving an AOD problem (N = 2,002), we compared heterosexual to monosexual and bisexual SM individuals on socio-demographic characteristics, AOD use and treatment, and psychosocial variables. Results Bisexual individuals were significantly younger than heterosexual individuals (p = .002 and p ≤ 0.001 among men and women, respectively) and reported significantly fewer years since AOD problem resolution compared to heterosexual individuals (p = .004 and p = .003 among men and women, respectively). Most notably, bisexual individuals, but not gay/lesbian individuals, reported significantly lower quality of life (QOL), happiness, self-esteem, and significantly higher distress compared to heterosexual individuals. Conclusion Bisexual, but not monosexual, SM individuals in recovery from an AOD use disorder, were younger and reported worse psychosocial functioning than heterosexual individuals. Findings highlight significant differences between monosexual versus bisexual identified individuals with a notable disadvantage experienced by bisexual individuals. More needs to be learned about the challenges faced by bisexual individuals in recovery to better address their needs and support long-term AOD recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present research examined associations between stroke and long-term trajectories of loneliness. METHODS We conducted secondary analyses in 3 large representative panel studies of adults 50 years and older in the United States, Europe, and Israel: the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA; analytic N = 14,992); the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE; analytic N = 103,782); and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; analytic N = 22,179). Within each sample, we used discontinuous growth curve modeling to estimate loneliness trajectories across adulthood and the impact of stroke on loneliness trajectories. RESULTS Across all 3 samples, participants who experienced stroke reported higher levels of loneliness relative to participants who did not experience stroke. In ELSA and HRS (but not SHARE), loneliness levels were higher after stroke onset relative to before stroke onset. DISCUSSION This research adds to a growing body of evidence demonstrating elevated loneliness among stroke survivors and highlights the need for interventions to increase social connectedness after stroke.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Research indicates that sexual minority (SM) individuals with alcohol and other drug use disorders may underutilize recovery resources generally but be more likely to use recovery community centers (RCCs). To inform recovery supports, this study characterized SM and heterosexual RCC members by demographics and clinical and recovery support service utilization. METHODS Cross-sectional secondary analyses compared SM and heterosexual RCC members in the northeastern U.S. (n = 337). Qualitative analyses coded the top three recovery facilitators. RESULTS Of the 337 participants (Meanage[SD] = 40.98[12.38], 51.8 % female), SM RCC members were more likely than heterosexuals to endorse lifetime psychiatric diagnoses and emergency department mental health treatment (p < .01). RCC service utilization and qualitatively derived recovery facilitators were mostly consistent across groups. CONCLUSIONS RCCs engaged SM individuals in recovery in ways consistent with heterosexuals. Despite otherwise vastly similar demographic characteristics across sexual identity, findings suggest a need for additional mental health resources for SM individuals in recovery.

Abstract
Substance use disorder (SUD) remains one of the most persistent public health challenges across the nation and in Minnesota. One intervention to help people with SUD is peer recovery services (PRS). PRS is a form on non-clinical support where trained individuals who are more established in recovery come alongside people currently in the recovery journey and provide guidance in the treatment process, help in accessing resources, and offer an empathetic ear. In combination with other services in the continuum of care, PRS seeks to reduce harm from disordered use. In 2018, Minnesota made PRS for SUD a Medicaid reimbursable service. While prior literature demonstrates promising effects of PRS for SUD, especially in treatment retention and participant experience, most studies evaluated PRS in limited settings, rather than in a large-scale implementation. Our retrospective, matched-cohort study used administrative data to estimate the impact of initiating Medicaid-reimbursable PRS for SUD on treatment, overdose, and mortality. Our results align, in some dimensions, with prior literature evaluating smaller-scale programs with positive impacts on treatment completion. We also find, however, that PRS at scale did not produce other positive outcomes that past studies have documented, particularly around overdose and inpatient treatment. This suggests that PRS follows a common challenge of implementing promising ideas at scale.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Some individuals seeking recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD) attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) while others choose newer alternatives such as Self-Management and Recovery Training ("SMART" Recovery). Some even attend both, while some choose not to attend either. Little is known about why people choose which pathway(s), and what they like, dislike, and find helpful. Greater knowledge could provide insights into the phenomenology of recovery experiences and enhance the efficiency of clinical linkage to these resources. METHODS Cross-sectional, qualitative, investigation (N = 80; n = 20 per condition; 50%female) of individuals attending either AA-only, SMART-only, both, or neither. Participants were asked why they initially chose that pathway, what they like and dislike, and what helps. Responses were coded using an inductive grounded theory approach with utterances recorded and categorized into superordinate domains and rank-ordered in terms of frequency across each question and recovery pathway. RESULTS AA participants reported attending due to, as well as liking and finding most helpful, the common socio-community aspects, whereas SMART attendees went initially due to, as well as found most helpful, the different format as well as the CBT/science-based approach. Similar to AA, however, SMART participants liked the socio-community aspects most. "Both" participants reported liking and finding helpful these perceived relative strengths of each organization. "Neither" participants reported reasons for non-attendance related to lower problem severity - perceiving no need to attend, and anxiety about privacy, but reported using recovery-related change strategies similar to those prescribed by AA, SMART and treatment (e.g., stimulus control, competing behaviors). Common dislikes for AA and SMART centered around irritation due to other members behaviors, a need for more SMART meetings, and negative experiences with SMART facilitators. CONCLUSION Common impressions exist among individuals selecting different recovery pathway choices, but also some differences in keeping with the group dynamics and distinct approaches inherent in AA and SMART. AA attendees appear to go initially for the recovery buoyancy derived from the social ethos and camaraderie of lived experience and may end up staying for the same reason; those choosing SMART, in contrast, appear to attend initially for the CBT/science-based content and different approach but, like AA participants, may end up staying due to the same camaraderie of lived experience. Those participating in both AA and SMART appear to capitalize on the strengths of each organization, suggesting that some can psychologically accommodate and make use of theoretically distinct, and sometimes opposing, philosophies and practices.

Abstract
Background Anterior skin numbness is a common complication after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) that may impact postoperative functional outcomes. This study aimed to compare skin numbness area, functional outcomes, and patient satisfaction between patients undergoing TKA with a medial parapatellar approach (medial group) and a lateral parapatellar approach (lateral group). Methods A prospective randomized study included 68 knees undergoing TKA via the medial parapatellar approach (n = 32) and the lateral parapatellar approach (n = 32) through the midline skin incision. Anterior skin numbness was assessed as the primary outcome using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments at 6 postoperative timepoints (2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years). Knee range of motion, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), and patient satisfaction scores were collected. Fifty-nine patients were retrieved at the 2-year final follow-up. Statistical analysis considered repeated outcome measurements with adjusted P-values. Results The lateral group had a significantly smaller area of anterior skin numbness at 2 weeks (11.2 vs 20.2 sq.cm.), 6 weeks (8.2 vs 17.2 sq.cm.), and 3 months (7.8 vs 14.4 sq.cm.) postoperatively compared to the medial group. No difference in the area of numbness was found at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years. Although the lateral group showed significantly higher satisfaction scores (P = .027) and the KOOS symptoms subdomain (P = .018), there were no differences in knee range of motion and other components of KOOS in both groups. Conclusions Compared to the medial approach, the lateral parapatellar approach in TKA demonstrates a reduced area of early postoperative skin numbness and expedited 6-month recovery, along with marginally superior patient satisfaction scores. However, both approaches yield comparable outcomes in terms of postoperative knee motion and overall functional outcomes.

Abstract
Floodbank realignment is a common practice aimed at restoring salt marsh vegetation on previously embanked land. However, experiences indicate that it may take several years before salt marsh vegetation becomes fully established. Various challenges arising from ecogeomorphic feedback mechanisms could pose significant setbacks to vegetation recolonization. The widespread adoption of transplantation techniques for the restoration and rehabilitation of rewilded landscapes has indeed proven to be a valuable tool for accelerating plant development. In the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon (South of Portugal), a pilot plan was implemented, and two salt marsh pioneer species, Spartina maritima (syn. Sporobolus maritimus) and Sarcocornia perennis (syn. Salicornia perennis), were transplanted from a natural salt marsh to a rewilded marsh. Biodegradable 3D porous structures were installed to mimic transplant clumping, aid sedimentation, and enhance the plant's initial adjustment. Ecological, sediment, and hydrodynamic data were collected during the 12-month pilot restoration plan. The environmental profiles of the donor and restoration sites were compared to substantiate the success of the transplants in the rewilded salt marsh. Results show that although plant shoot density decreased after the transplanting, Spartina maritima acclimated well to the new environmental conditions of the restoration site, showing signs of growth and cover increase, whilst Sarcocornia perennis was not able to acclimatize and survive in the restoration site. The failure behind the Sarcocornia perennis acclimation might be related to the bed properties and topographic properties of the restoration site in the rewilded marsh. Major findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of how salt marsh pioneering vegetation successfully colonizes disturbed habitats, facilitated using 3D-biodegradable structures.

Abstract
Activity-based anorexia (ABA) is a rodent model of anorexia nervosa (AN) that induces several key components of AN, including voluntary reduction in food intake, reduced body weight, hyperactivity, and alterations to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Previous research has demonstrated persistently increased anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze (EPM), a test measuring avoidance of novel and open areas in adult female rats that experienced ABA during adolescence and are weight-restored in adulthood. Whether the same behavioral effects of two bouts of adolescent ABA emerge in response to different anxiety-provoking stimuli, however, has not been explored. We used the social partition (SP), novelty suppressed feeding (NSF), marble burying, and EPM tests to explore whether two bouts of adolescent ABA have persistent effects on anxiety-like behavior in weight restored young adult female rats. One-way ANOVA analyses revealed that female rats that experienced two bouts of ABA during adolescence had increased anxiety-like behavior in the EPM and SP tests in young adulthood following weight restoration compared with controls. These data demonstrate that the enduring behavioral effects of two bouts of adolescent ABA are specific to particular anxiety-provoking stimuli and suggest that adolescent ABA has enduring effects on social relationships.

Abstract
A growing evidence showed that the terrestrial ecosystem was a greater sink for microplastics (MPs) compared with ocean. Owing to the limitation of pretreatment methods, there are few reports on the identification of small-sized MPs(<60 μm) in soil currently, which may led to an underestimation of the environmental risk of MPs in soil system. In this study, we established an efficient pretreatment method for MPs in soils by developing a novel device, Plastic Flotation and Separator system (PFSS). The device integrated the suspension, digestion and filtration procedures into one system, reducing the losses of pretreatment process. It was shown that the recovery of MPs with size of 45 μm was 90%, significantly surpassing that of the traditional pretreatment methods in this particle size range. Combined with the SEM-Raman technique, MPs with small size were accurately determined. This work provides an effective method for the extraction and determination of MPs in soils and is of significance for the risk assessment of MPs in soil system.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Understanding prognosis is critical to anticipating public health needs and providing care to individuals with psychotic disorders. However, the long-term course of remission and recovery remains unclear. In this study, the most common trajectories of illness course are described for a cohort of individuals followed for 25 years since first admission for psychosis. METHODS Participants are from the Suffolk County Mental Health Project, an epidemiological study of first-admission psychosis. Data for the present study was collected from six follow-ups, with 311 individuals assessed at the 25-year follow-up. Common patterns of remission and recovery were assessed in the baseline cohort of 591 individuals and the subsample from the 25-year follow up. RESULTS In the baseline cohort and the 25-year subsample, the most common trajectory for individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders was no remission and no recovery. Among individuals with other psychotic disorders, in both the baseline and 25-year cohorts, the modal pattern was one of intermittent remission and recovery. Individuals with other psychotic disorders were more likely to experience stable remission (15.1%) and stable recovery (21.1%), outcomes that were rare among individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (0% and 0.6%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The modal longitudinal pattern for individuals with other psychoses is one of multiple transitions into and out of symptomatic and functional recovery. Engagement in a long-term health care plan may help individuals detect and respond to these changes. Sustained remission and recovery are rare among people with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Efforts should be directed toward developing more effective treatments for this population.

Abstract
Recycling e-waste is seen as a sustainable alternative to compensate for the limited natural rare earth elements (REEs) resources and the difficulty of accessing these resources. Recycling facilitates the recovery of valuable products and minimizes emissions during their transportation. Numerous studies have been reported on e-waste recycling using various techniques, including thermo-, hydro- and biometallurgical approaches. However, each approach still has technical, economic, social, or environmental limitations. This review highlights the potential of recycling e-waste, including outlining the current unutilized potential of REE recycling from different e-waste components. An in-depth analysis of e-waste generation on a global scale and Australian scenario, along with various hazardous impacts on ecosystem and human health, is reported. In addition, a comprehensive summary of various metal recovery processes and their merits and demerits is also presented. Lifecycle analysis for recovering REEs from e-waste indicate a positive environmental impact when compared to REEs produced from virgin sources. In addition, recovering REEs form secondary sources eliminated ca. 1.5 times radioactive waste, as seen in production from primary sources scenario. The review outcome demonstrates the increasing potential of REE recycling to overcome critical challenges, including issues over supply security and localized dependency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the recovery rate of the left ventricular systolic function of women diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy receiving specialized care in rural Tanzania. METHODS In this observational study, women diagnosed with peripartum cardiomyopathy at a referral center in rural Tanzania between December 2015 and September 2021 were included. Women diagnosed between February and September 2021 were followed prospectively, those diagnosed between December 2015 and January 2021 were tracked back for a follow-up echocardiography. All participants received a clinical examination, a comprehensive echocardiogram, and a prescription of guideline-directed medical therapy. The primary outcome was recovery of the left ventricular systolic function (left ventricular ejection fraction > 50%). RESULTS Median age of the 110 participants was 28.5 years (range 17-45). At enrolment, 49 (45%) participants were already on cardiac medication, 50 (45%) had severe eccentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle, and the median left ventricular ejection fraction was 30% (range 15-46). After a median follow-up of 8.98 months (IQR 5.72-29.37), 61 (55%) participants were still on cardiac medication. Full recovery of the left ventricular systolic function was diagnosed in 76 (69%, 95% CI 59.6-77.6%) participants. In the multivariate analysis, a higher left ventricular ejection fraction at baseline was positively associated with full recovery (each 5% increase; OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.10-2.62, p = 0.012), while higher age was inversely associated (each 10 years increase; OR 0.40, 95% CI 0.19-0.82, p = 0.012). CONCLUSION Left ventricular systolic function recovered completely in 69% of study participants with peripartum cardiomyopathy from rural Tanzania under specialized care.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate a new service model, Specialists Together In the Community (STIC), in terms of patient outcomes. This model integrates Flexible Assertive Community Treatment (FACT)-principles with expertise of specialized teams that offer diagnosis-related outpatient treatment. In a pre-post design, symptoms and quality of life of 930 former FACT-patients were measured repeatedly pre- and post-STIC. Regarding patients in former specialized teams, pre- and post-treatment social functioning and symptoms were measured for the pre- (n = 944) and post-STIC (n = 544) groups. Against expectation, symptoms of former FACT-patients remained stable post-STIC compared to a slight decrease pre-STIC. According to expectation, pre- and post-STIC groups had an equal symptom reduction. Unexpectedly, the post-STIC group did not improve more on social functioning than the pre-STIC group. Explorative analysis showed less treatment contacts in the post-STIC group. The highly similar patient outcomes post-STIC could be improved by monitoring process outcomes and prolonging study duration.

Abstract
The emerging role of Ribonucleic acids (RNAs) as therapeutics is alluring. However, RNAs are extremely labile under ambient conditions and typically need to be stored in cryogenic conditions (-20 °C to -80 °C). Hence, storage, stabilization, and transportation of RNA under ambient conditions have been an arduous task and remain an unsolved problem. In this work, a guanidinium-based ionic covalent organic framework (COF), TTGCl with nanotubular morphology, was synthesized and used as nano-reservoirs for room-temperature storage of RNA. To understand the role of the nanotubular morphology and chemical nature of TTGCl in stabilizing the RNA structure and for comparison purposes, a neutral COF, TMT-TT, is synthesized and studied. Further, density functional theory (DFT) studies confirmed non-covalent interaction between the COFs and the RNA nucleobases, facilitating reversible storage of RNA. RNA loaded in COFs was found to be resistant to enzymatic degradation when treated with RNase. Gel electrophoresis and sequencing confirmed the structural integrity of the recovered RNAs and their further processibility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Being socially excluded has detrimental effects, with prolonged exclusion linked to loneliness and social isolation. Social disconnection interventions that do not require direct support actions (e.g., "how can I help?") offer promise in mitigating the affective and cognitive consequences of social exclusion. We examine how various social disconnection interventions involving friends and unknown peers might mitigate social exclusion by buffering (intervening before) and by promoting recovery (intervening after). METHODS We present an integrative data analysis (IDA) of five studies (N = 664) that systematically exposed participants to exclusion (vs. inclusion) social dynamics. Using a well-validated paradigm, participants had a virtual interaction with two other people. Unbeknownst to participants, the other people's behavior was programmed to either behave inclusively toward the participant or for one to behave exclusively. Critically, our social disconnection interventions experimentally manipulated whether a friend was present (vs. an unknown peer vs. being alone), the nature of interpersonal engagement (having a face-to-face conversation vs. a reminder of an upcoming interaction vs. mere presence), and the timing of the intervention in relation to the social dynamic (before vs. during vs. after). We then assessed participants' in-the-moment affective and cognitive responses, which included mood, feelings of belonging, sense of control, and social comfort. RESULTS Experiencing exclusion (vs. inclusion) led to negative affective and cognitive consequences. However, engaging in a face-to-face conversation with a friend before the exclusion lessened its impact (p < .001). Moreover, a face-to-face conversation with a friend after exclusion, and even a reminder of an upcoming interaction with a friend, sped-up recovery (ps < .001). There was less conclusive evidence that a face-to-face conversation with an unknown peer, or that the mere presence of a friend or unknown peer, conferred protective benefits. CONCLUSIONS The findings provide support for the effectiveness of social disconnection interventions that involve actual (i.e., face-to-face) or symbolic (i.e., reminders) interactions with friends. These interventions target momentary vulnerabilities that arise from social exclusion by addressing negative affect and cognitions before or after they emerge. As such, they offer a promising approach to primary prevention prior to the onset of loneliness and social isolation.

Abstract
Rare Earth Elements (REEs) are indispensable in contemporary technologies, influencing various aspects of our daily lives and environmental solutions. The escalating demand for REEs has led to increased exploitation, resulting in the generation of diverse REE-bearing solid and liquid wastes. Recognizing the potential of these wastes as secondary sources of REEs, researchers are exploring microbial solutions for their recovery. This mini review provides insights into the utilization of microorganisms, with a particular focus on microalgae, for recovering REEs from sources such as ores, electronic waste, and industrial effluents. The review outlines the principles and distinctions of bioleaching, biosorption, and bioaccumulation, offering a comparative analysis of their potential and limitations. Specific examples of microorganisms demonstrating efficacy in REE recovery are highlighted, accompanied by successful methods, including advanced techniques for enhancing microbial strains to achieve higher REE recovery. Moreover, the review explores the environmental implications of bio-recovery, discussing the potential of these methods to mitigate REE pollution. By emphasizing microalgae as promising biotechnological candidates for REE recovery, this mini review not only presents current advances but also illuminates prospects in sustainable REE resource management and environmental remediation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Females of reproductive age with concussion report a greater number of symptoms that can be more severe and continue for longer than age matched males. Underlying mechanisms for sex differences are not well understood. Short non-coding Ribonucleic Acids (sncRNAs) are candidate salivary biomarkers for concussion and have been studied primarily in male athletes. Female sex hormones influence expression of these biomarkers, and it remains unclear whether a similar pattern of sncRNA expression would be observed in females following concussion. This study aims to evaluate recovery time, the ratio of salivary sncRNAs and symptom severity across different hormone profiles in females presenting to emergency departments (ED) with concussion and, to investigate the presence of low energy availability (LEA) as a potential modifier of concussion symptoms. METHODS This prospective cohort study recruits participants from New Zealand EDs who are biologically female, of reproductive age (16-50 years) and with a confirmed diagnosis of concussion from an ED healthcare professional. Participants are excluded by ED healthcare professionals from study recruitment as part of initial routine assessment if they have a pre-diagnosed psychiatric condition, neurological condition (i.e., epilepsy, cerebral palsy) or more than three previously diagnosed concussions. Participants provide a saliva sample for measurement of sncRNA's, and online survey responses relating to hormone profile and symptom recovery at 7-day intervals after injury until they report a full return to work/study. The study is being performed in accordance with ethical standards of the Declaration of Helsinki with ethics approval obtained from the Health and Disability Ethics Committee (HDEC #2021 EXP 11655), Auckland University of Technology Ethics Committee (AUTEC #22/110) and locality consent through Wellington hospital research office. DISCUSSION If saliva samples confirm presence of sncRNAs in females with concussion, it will provide evidence of the potential of saliva sampling as an objective tool to aid in diagnosis of, and confirmation of recovery from, concussion. Findings will determine whether expression of sncRNAs is influenced by steroid hormones in females and may outline the need for sex specific application and interpretation of sncRNAs as a clinical and/or research tool. Abstract
Community-based Mental Health (MH) organisations in the United Kingdom (UK) are facing challenges for sustaining in-person service delivery. Without empirical evidence that demonstrates the value of a place-based approach for MH recovery, and the types of resources needed to build nurturing spaces for peer support, community-based MH organisations will struggle to maintain their physical spaces. We present empirical insights from a case study involving interviews with 20 students accessing peer support services at the Recovery College Collective, a community-based MH organisation located in the North East of England. The interview study aims to evidence how a place-based approach can afford MH recovery. We draw from discourses on place-making and interpret our interview findings through an established framework that highlights four mechanisms through which place impacts recovery: place for doing, being, becoming and belonging. We use this framework to structure our findings and highlight key qualities of place for establishing and maintaining MH recovery. Our contribution is two-fold: we address a gap in the literature by providing empirical understandings of how place influences MH recovery, whilst extending previous research by considering the role that place plays in community-based organisations. This is timely because of the challenges faced in securing in-person service delivery post-pandemic, and a shift towards remote service provision models. We highlight key implications: (i) Accessing a physical place dedicated to MH support is vital for people who do not have anywhere else to go and are socially isolated due to their health conditions; (ii) Connecting through peer-to-peer interaction is an integral part of the recovery process, and learning from people with lived experience can inform a place-based approach that best suit their needs; and (iii) Recognising the value of place for MH support, and the resources needed for peer support delivery in the community, will help secure places that our research participants described as lifesaving.

Abstract
With over one-hundred thousand drug overdose deaths in 2021, substance use disorder (SUD) is a public health crisis in the United States. Medical stabilization has been the predominant focus of SUD interventions despite low levels of retention. Consequently, national quality measures for SUD care outside the clinical continuity of care are limited. The expansion of recovery support services addressing social drivers of health outside clinical settings is needed. The current SUD quality measures are not applicable nor feasible for recovery support service providers with limited resource capacities, like the estimated 17,900 recovery housing providers nationwide. Despite widespread support for recovery housing and its documented effectiveness, no universal set of measures has been developed for widespread adoption. In this brief, a matrix of quality measures are proposed to meet the needs of recovery housing providers with various capacities to support service evolution and improve equitable SUD treatment and recovery care.

Abstract
Researchers commonly assess the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis by measuring natural fluctuations of its end product cortisol throughout the day or in response to a standardized stressor. Although it is conceivable that an individual releasing relatively more cortisol when confronted with a laboratory stressor does the same in everyday life, inconsistencies remain in the literature regarding associations between diurnal cortisol parameters and cortisol stress responses. Hence, the current meta-analysis aggregated findings of 12 studies to examine overall associations of diurnal cortisol parameters (including total output, diurnal slope, and cortisol awakening response [CAR]) with cortisol stress reactivity and recovery in the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). There were no significant overall associations of total output, slope, or CAR with stress reactivity. Lower total diurnal cortisol output was significantly related to better stress recovery, whereas diurnal slope and CAR were unrelated to stress recovery. Moderation analyses revealed that associations between diurnal cortisol and cortisol stress responses were dependent on the computation method of cortisol parameters, questioning the convergence and validity of commonly employed measures of stress reactivity and recovery. Overall, it seems that we cannot predict characteristics of the diurnal cortisol rhythm from a one-time measure of stress reactivity in a standardized psychosocial laboratory paradigm.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to identify factors associated with prolonged time to return to full performance (RTFP) in athletes with recent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. METHODS Prospective cohort study with cross sectional analysis. A total of 84 athletes with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection assessed at a coronavirus disease 2019 recovery clinic gave a history of age, sex, type/level of sport, co-morbidities, pre-infection training hours, and 26 acute SARS-CoV-2 symptoms from 3 categories ("nose and throat", "chest and neck", and "whole body"/systemic). Data on days to RTFP were obtained by structured interviews. Factors associated with RTFP were demographics, sport participation, history of co-morbidities, pre-infection training history, and acute symptoms (type, number). Outcomes were: (a) days to RTFP (median, interquartile range (IQR)) in asymptomatic (n = 7) and symptomatic athletes (n = 77), and (b) hazard ratios (HRs; 95% confidence interval) for symptomatic athletes with vs. without a factor (univariate, multiple models). HR < 1 was predictive of higher percentage chance of prolonged RTFP. Significance was p < 0.05. RESULTS Days to RTFP were 30 days (IQR: 23-40) for asymptomatic and 64 days (IQR: 42-91) for symptomatic participants (p > 0.05). Factors associated with prolonged RTFP (univariate models) were: females (HR = 0.57; p = 0.014), endurance athletes (HR = 0.41; p < 0.0001), co-morbidity number (HR = 0.75; p = 0.001), and respiratory disease history (HR = 0.54; p = 0.026). In symptomatic athletes, prolonged RTFP (multiple models) was significantly associated with increased "chest and neck" (HR = 0.85; p = 0.017) and "nose and throat" (HR = 0.84; p = 0.013) symptoms, but the association was more profound between prolonged RFTP and increased total number of "all symptoms" (HR = 0.91; p = 0.001) and "whole body"/systemic (HR = 0.82; p = 0.007) symptoms. CONCLUSION A larger number of total symptoms and specifically "whole body"/systemic symptoms during the acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection in athletes is associated with prolonged RTFP.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Injury-related disability following road trauma is a major public health concern. Unfortunately, outcome following road trauma and risk factors for poor recovery are inadequately studied, especially for road trauma survivors with minor injuries that do not require hospitalization. OBJECTIVES This manuscript reports 12-month recovery outcomes for a large cohort of road trauma survivors. METHODS This was a prospective, observational inception cohort study of 1,480 road trauma survivors recruited between July 2018 and March 2020 from 3 trauma centres in British Columbia, Canada. Participants were aged ≥16 years and arrived in a participating emergency department within 24 h of a motor vehicle collision. Data on baseline health and injury severity were collected from structured interviews and medical records. Outcome measures, including the SF-12, were collected during follow-up interviews at 2, 4, 6 and 12 months. Predictors of recovery outcomes were identified using Cox proportional hazards models and summarized using hazard ratios. RESULTS Only 42 % of participants self-reported full recovery and only 66 % reported a return to usual daily activities. Females, older individuals, pedestrians, and those who required hospital admission had a poorer recovery than other groups. Similar patterns were observed for the SF-12 physical component. For the SF-12 mental component, no significant differences were observed between participants admitted to hospital and those discharged home from the ED. Return to work was reported by 77 % of participants who had a paying job at baseline, with no significant differences between sex and age groups. CONCLUSIONS In a large cohort of road trauma survivors, under half self-reported full recovery one year after the injury. Poor mental health recovery was observed in both participants admitted to hospital and those discharged home from the ED. This finding may indicate a need for early intervention and continued mental health monitoring for all injured individuals, including for those with less serious injuries.

Abstract
More intense, earlier exercise in rehabilitation results in improved motor outcomes following stroke. Timing and intensity of therapy delivery vary from study to study. For more intensive therapies, there are practical challenges in implementation. However, there are also opportunities for high intensity treatment through innovative approaches and new technologies. Timing of rehabilitation is important. As time post stroke increases, the dosage of therapy required to improve motor recovery outcomes increases. Very early rehabilitation may improve motor outcomes but should be delayed for at least 24 hours post stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although changes in the gait biomechanics during pregnancy are known to occur, it is unclear whether they return to their original state after childbirth. RESEARCH QUESTION The objective of the current systematic review is to summarize existing literature reporting the biomechanical characteristics of gait in postpartum women and to identify knowledge gaps that calls for future investigations in this population. METHODS Relevant articles were selected using MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus (Elsevier), Embase (Elsevier), and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics). Articles were included if they met the following criteria: They must (1) include postpartum women, (2) report measures related to three-dimensional (3D) kinematics and/or kinetics, (3) have been published after 1990, and (4) have been published in English. RESULTS AND SIGNIFICANCE The current systematic review included a total of 14 articles, five of which compare the data from postpartum women with nulliparous women or pre-pregnancy data. We observed that gait biomechanics changes of postpartum women could persist for more than 5 years after the childbirth. This review provides novel viewpoints on the biomechanics of postpartum women's gait and recommendations for future studies to fully understand these changes and improve postpartum women's physical and mental wellbeing.

Abstract
A rapid and efficient method for the simultaneous monitoring and recovery of Auramine O (AO) and Methylene Blue (MB) dyes from water samples is presented. This method, named ultrasound-assisted dispersive-magnetic nanocomposites-solid-phase microextraction (UA-DMN-μSPE), utilizes NiCoMn/Fe3O4@C composite sorbents. Response surface methodology (RSM) combined with artificial neural networks (ANN) and generalized regression artificial neural network (GRNN) under central composite design (CCD) was employed to optimize various parameters for efficient extraction, followed by further refinement using desirability function analysis (DFA) and genetic algorithms (GA). Under optimized conditions, the method achieved exceptional recovery rates (99.5 ± 1.2% for AO and 99.8 ± 1.1% for MB) with acetone as the eluent. Additionally, a high preconcentration factor of 45.50 and 47.30 for AO and MB, respectively, was obtained. Low detection limits of 0.45 ng mL⁻1 (AO) and 1.80 ng mL⁻1 (MB) were achieved with wide linear response ranges (5-1000 and 5-2000 ng mL⁻1 for AO and MB, respectively). The method exhibited good stability with RSDs below 3% for five recycling runs, and minimal interference from various ions was observed. This UA-DMN-μSPE-UV/Vis method offers significant advantages in terms of efficiency, preconcentration, and detection limits, making it a valuable tool for the analysis of AO and MB in water samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological repurcussions of COVID-19 pandemic has received wide attention, but there's limited attention paid to psychological recovery afterwards. This study focuses on the changes and predictive factors of mental health of Chinese university students post-pandemic. METHODS This study included 1175 Chinese undergraduate students sampled in May 2022 and May-June 2023, right before and after peaks of infections following the end of lockdown policy in China. The participants completed a survey of demographic variables, and three questionnaires: 12-item General Health Questionnaire, Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Prosocial Tendencies Measure. RESULTS The participants sampled in 2023 have significant lower GHQ scores and higher PPQ scores than those sampled in 2022, while there is no significant difference in PTM scores between them. The proportion of participants with GHQ-12 scores exceeding 12 in 2023 showed slightly decrease compared to that in 2022. The infection of significant others, the sense of hope, and PPQ self-efficiency, hope and optimism subscale scores were significantly associated with GHQ-12 scores in 2023, but actual infection or quarantine experience were not. CONCLUSIONS The mental health and psychological capital of the university students have been significantly improved within a year. It is worthy to pay attention to the infection of significant others, the sense of hope, and psychological capital in a pandemic to improve the mental health of university students. LIMITATIONS Compared to a cross-sectional study, longitudinal research is the better choice for a two-year comparison.

Abstract
Proposing recovery strategies to recover heavy-metal-inhibited sulfur-driven denitrification, as well as disclosing recovery mechanisms, can provide technical support for the stable operation of bio-systems. This study proposed an effective bio-promoter (mediator-promoter composed of L-cysteine, biotin, cytokinin, and anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate) to recover Cr(VI) inhibited sulfur-driven denitrification, which effectively reduced the recovery time of NO3--N reduction (18-21 cycles) and NO2--N reduction (27-42 cycles) compared with self-recovery. The mediator-promoter repaired microbial damage by promoting intracellular chromium efflux. Moreover, the mediator-promoter reduced the accumulated reactive oxygen species by stimulating the secretion of antioxidant enzymes, reaching equilibrium in the oxidative-antioxidant system. To improve electron transmission, the mediator-promoter restored S2O32- oxidation to provide adequate electron donors and increased electron transfer rate by increasing cytochrome c levels. Mediator-promoter boosted the abundance of Thiobacillus (sulfur-oxidizing bacterium) and Simplicispira (denitrifying bacterium), which were positively correlated, facilitating the rapid denitrification recovery and the long-term stable operation of recovered systems.

Abstract
This study investigated the impact of a specialized program aimed at improving substance use disorder and trauma treatment, recovery, and reentry services for adult female offenders. Trained recovery coaches delivered pretreatment interventions such as prescreening, motivational interviewing, and support-building to facilitate treatment entry and improve outcomes. Of 113 participants, 40% identified as racial/ethnic minorities, and 72% fell within the 25-45 age range. A notable 44.5% reduction in self-reported psychiatric symptoms was observed, alongside significant improvements in abstinence and trauma symptoms. Recovery capital and psychosocial functioning showed marked improvement including significant changes in employment status and housing stability and a decrease in criminal justice involvement. The results suggest that targeted, client-centered approaches can effectively improve recovery and psychosocial functioning among female offenders while reducing re-incarceration rates. These findings underscore the importance of addressing the unique needs of this population in both pre-and post-release settings to ensure equitable access to reentry services.

Abstract
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is one of the most effective treatments in psychiatry. However, it has many cognitive and non-cognitive adverse effects (AEs). There are lacunae in the literature on systematic assessment of non-cognitive AEs. There is a need for a standard, comprehensive and specific clinical tool to evaluate this. Hence, a checklist of short-term AEs of ECT (SAVE) with a 2-phase assessment was developed. Content validation was done using 15 experts' ratings and predefined content validity ratio and index (CVR and CVI) in a two-stage modified Delphi method. The checklist had a good CVR and CVI with a final tool of 39 items. The tool was sensitive and identified the non-cognitive AEs after ECT. Cardiovascular and musculoskeletal systems displayed the highest incidence. Many participants exhibited delayed recovery in orientation, gait, and stance, highlighting a necessity for meticulous monitoring. SAVE is the first standardised tool to assess short-term ECT-related AEs systematically. This checklist likely identifies clinically significant incidences of adverse effects. Its regular use may enhance the safety of ECT and patient comfort by supporting early identification and intervention for AEs. However, given the transient nature of AEs, further studies are needed to determine their predictive validity for long-term consequences.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Heterotopic ossification (HO), or ectopic bone formation in soft tissue, is a not so rare and poorly understood debilitating sequela of burn injury. Individuals developing HO following burn injuries to their hands often experience reductions in mobility, significant contractures, and joint pain. This study identifies demographic characteristics of individuals who develop HO and compares their physical and psychosocial outcomes to the general burn population. METHODS Participant demographics, injury characteristics, and PROMIS-29 scores across three time points (discharge, six- and 12- months after injury) were extracted from the Burn Model System National Longitudinal Database representing participants from 2015-2022. Mixed-effects linear regression models were used to compare PROMIS scores across all three longitudinal measurements. Models were adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, HO status, and burn size. RESULTS Of the 861 participants with data concerning HO, 33 were diagnosed with HO (3.8% of participants). Most participants with HO were male (n = 24, 73%) and had an average age of 40 + /- 13 years. Participants with HO had significantly larger burn size (49 +/-23% Total Body Surface Area (TBSA)) than those without HO (16 +/-17%). Participants with HO reported significantly worse physical function, depression, pain interference and social integration scores than those without HO. After adjusting for covariables, participants with HO continued to report statistically significantly worse physical function than those without HO. Although physical functioning was consistently lower, the two populations did not differ significantly among psychosocial outcome measures. CONCLUSIONS While HO can result in physical limitations, the translation to psychosocial impairments was not evident. Targeted treatment of HO with the goal of maximizing physical function should be a focus of their rehabilitation. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 2b TYPE OF STUDY: Symptom Prevalence Study.

Abstract
Platinum group metals (PGMs) are strategic metals. Auto-exhaust catalysts are their main application fields. The recovery of PGMs from spent auto-exhaust catalysts has remarkable economic value and strategic significance. Aiming at the problems of ferrosilicon generation for Fe capturing and subsequent oxygen blowing to remove iron with high energy consumption and heat release, a technology of Fe-Sn synergistic capturing PGMs was proposed. Taking full the advantage of the lower melting point of Fe-Sn alloy (<1200 °C) and its unique affinity for PGMs, the PGMs were captured at approximate 1400 °C with Fe-Sn as the collector. In experiment, 500 g of spent auto-exhaust catalysts were employed to minimize error and approximate industrial production. The mechanism of Fe-Sn synergistic capturing PGMs was elucidated. The generation of Fe-Sn-PGMs alloy lowered the activity of [PGMs] in the system, accelerated the reduction of the PGMs oxides and promoted the alloying of [PGMs]. Therefore, Fe-Sn synergistic capturing PGMs was realized. The inability of Si to enter the alloy phase was confirmed by theoretical calculations, avoiding the generation of ferrosilicon. The effects of basicity, CaF2, m(Fe)/m(Sn) and the amount of collector on capturing PGMs were optimized. Under the optimized conditions (basicity R = 1.1, spent auto-exhaust catalysts 70 wt%, CaO 30 wt%, B2O3 10 wt%, CaF2 7 wt%, m(Fe)/m(Sn) = 1/1 and the collector 15 wt%), the content of PGMs in the slag phase was 2.46 g/t. It is feasible to remove Fe and Sn by oxidation to achieve the purpose of PGMs enrichment. This technology offers guidance on the safe, environmentally sound, and efficient disposal of spent auto-exhaust catalysts, promoting the sustainable development of PGMs.

Abstract
Background There is substantial evidence that operative treatment reduces the risk of nonunion but offers no long-term functional gains compared with nonoperative treatment. Despite some studies citing quicker recovery with surgery, the promise of accelerated functional recovery remains under-investigated. The aim of this meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was to investigate the possible early functional gains (≤6 months) after operative treatment of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures compared with nonsurgical treatment. Methods A systematic search was performed to identify randomized controlled trials comparing plate osteosynthesis with nonoperative treatment. We evaluated shoulder function outcomes measured by Constant Score or Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. Other outcomes of interest were sick leave and return to previous activity (work, leisure). Results Ten studies including 1333 patients were included. The mean difference in DASH score after 6 weeks was 9.4 points (95% confidence interval [CI] 13.7-5.1) in favor of operative treatment. At 3 months, the difference was 3.6 points (95% CI 6.9-0.4), and at 6 months, the difference was 3.2 points (95% CI 5.2-1.1), both in favor of operative treatment. Results for Constant Score were similar to that of DASH score. Conclusion This meta-analysis shows that there is an early functional gain at six weeks following plate fixation of midshaft clavicular fractures compared with nonoperative treatment. At three and six months, the functional gain is lesser and not clinically relevant.

Abstract
Poststroke aphasia, which impacts expressive and receptive communication, can have detrimental effects on the psychosocial well-being and the quality of life of those affected. Aphasia recovery is multidimensional and can be influenced by several baseline, stroke-related, and treatment-related factors, including preexisting cerebrovascular conditions, stroke size and location, and amount of therapy received. Importantly, aphasia recovery can continue for many years after aphasia onset. Behavioral speech and language therapy with a speech-language pathologist is the most common form of aphasia therapy. In this review, the authors also discuss augmentative treatment methodologies, collaborative goal setting frameworks, and recommendations for future research.

Abstract
Tumor growth is associated to chronic metabolic changes which inform the clinical phenotype and the outcome of patients with cancer. Surgery further triggers a cascade of acute neuro-immune responses leading to hypermetabolic and catabolic state. The metabolic mechanisms associated to surgical stress are well described. Preventive and therapeutic strategies have been developed, yet they appear not to benefit all surgical patients with cancer, even in the presence of a similar tumor type as well surgical procedures. Recent studies show that aging is associated with enrichment of senescent cells in different organs and tissues. Senescent cells are characterized by a specific senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), which limits the potential for resilience of tissues and organs. Enhancement of the metabolic and functional recovery of patients with cancer undergoing surgery may therefore require additional therapies addressing SASP and senescent cells. Preliminary results obtained in experimental models recommend to further explore the role of senescence in mediating the metabolic changes and tissue resistance to efficient recovery.

Abstract
PURPOSE A lateral ankle sprain is the most common musculoskeletal injury in the physically active population. However, it is unclear how the clinical condition evolves during the period after the injury and what proportion of patients develops chronic symptoms. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the evolution of patient-reported outcome measures after a first time lateral ankle sprain. METHODS A prospective clinical study assessed the patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of a consecutive group of 100 patients during 1 year after a first lateral ankle sprain. The Karlsson score and Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) were assessed at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and 1 year. The Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool (CAIT)-score was assessed at 6 months, 9 months and 1 year. The difference between the time points of all scores was analysed using the positive change over time (binomial test versus 50%) and the difference in score (signed rank test). The time to sustained excellent level was also assessed overall and in several subgroups: age, gender, degree of injury (2 or 3), avulsion fracture, use of crutches, use of cast. Differences between subgroups were assessed by a generalized log-rank test. RESULTS All clinical scores demonstrated an improvement up to 12 months after the sprain. The median Karlsson score (interquartile range) improved from 62 (50-80) at 6 weeks to 90 (72-100) at 3 months, to 97 (82-100) at 6 months to 100 (90-100) at 9 months, to 100 (100-100) at 1 year. The analysis of positive change over time demonstrated a significant positive change (P-value <.0005) between all time points except between 6 weeks and 12 weeks when using the FAOS quality score. The difference in score demonstrated a significant change (P-value <.01) between all time points except between 36 weeks and 48 weeks when using the FAOS pain and FAOS sports score. Age and presence of an avulsion fracture were correlated with a slower recovery and worse results. At 1 year, in total 13 patients (13%) had a worse outcome corresponding to a Karlsson score < 81 or CAIT score < 24. CONCLUSION The clinical condition after a first ankle sprain demonstrated a significant improvement in PROMs between the different time points in the first year. Twelve months after a first lateral ankle sprain 13% had a fair or poor outcome. Higher age and presence of an avulsion fracture were correlated with a slower recovery and worse results. This information is useful in clinical practice to predict further progression and inform patients. Moreover, it is valuable to improve treatment strategies. Abstract
Despite the considerable efforts devoted to the toxicological assessment of nanoplastics, the effect of UV-irradiation induced aging, a realistic environmental process, on the toxicity of nanoplastics toward microalgae and its underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Herein, this study comparatively investigated the toxicities of polystyrene nanoplastics (nano-PS) and the UV-aged nano-PS on the eukaryotic alga Chlorella vulgaris, focusing on evaluating their inhibitory effects on carbon fixation. Exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1-10 mg/L) of nano-PS caused severe damage to chloroplast, inhibited the photosynthetic efficiency and electron transport, and suppressed the activities of carbon fixation related enzymes. Multi-omics results revealed that nano-PS interfered with energy supply by disrupting light reactions and TCA cycle and hindered the Calvin cycle, thereby inhibiting the photosynthetic carbon fixation of algae. The above alterations partially recovered after a recovery period. The aged nano-PS were less toxic than the pristine ones as evidenced by the mitigated inhibitory effect on algal growth and carbon fixation. The aging process introduced oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of nano-PS, increased the hydrophilicity of nano-PS, limited their attachment on algal cells, and thus reduced the toxicity. The findings of this work highlight the potential threat of nanoplastics to the global carbon cycle.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prevention and Recovery Care services are residential sub-acute services in Victoria, Australia, guided by a commitment to recovery-oriented practice. The evidence regarding the effectiveness of this service model is limited, largely relying on small, localised evaluations. This study involved a state-wide investigation into the personal recovery, perceived needs for care, well-being and quality-of-life outcomes experienced by Prevention and Recovery Care services' consumers. METHODS A longitudinal cohort design examined the trajectory of self-reported personal recovery and other outcomes for consumers in 19 Victorian Prevention and Recovery Care services over 4 time points (T1 - 1 week after admission; T2 - within 1 week of discharge; T3 - 6 months after discharge; T4 - 12 months after discharge). T2-T4 time frames were extended by approximately 3 weeks due to recruitment challenges. The Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery was the primary outcome measure. RESULTS At T1, 298 consumers were recruited. By T4, 114 remained in the study. Participants scored higher on the Questionnaire about the Process of Recovery at all three time points after T1. There were also sustained improvements on all secondary outcome measures. Improvements were then sustained at each subsequent post-intervention time point. Community inclusion and having needs for care met also improved. CONCLUSION The findings provide a consistent picture of benefits for consumers using Prevention and Recovery Care services, with significant improvement in personal recovery, quality of life, mental health and well-being following an admission to a Prevention and Recovery Care service. Further attention needs to be given to how to sustain the gains made through a Prevention and Recovery Care service admission in the long term.

Abstract
PURPOSE Urinary C-C motif chemokine ligand 14 (CCL14) is a strong predictor of persistent stage 3 acute kidney injury (AKI). Multiple clinical actions are recommended for AKI but how these are applied in individual patients and how the CCL14 test results may impact their application is unknown. METHODS We assembled an international panel of 12 experts and conducted a modified Delphi process to evaluate patients at risk for persistent stage 3 AKI (lasting 72 hours or longer). Using a Likert scale, we rated 11 clinical actions based on international guidelines applied to each case before and after CCL14 testing and analyzed the association between the strength and direction of recommendations and CCL14 results. RESULTS The strength and direction of clinical recommendations were strongly influenced by CCL14 results (P < 0.001 for the interaction). Nine (82%) recommendations for clinical actions were significantly impacted by CCL14 results (P < 0.001 comparing low to highest CCL14 risk category). CONCLUSIONS Most recommendations for care of patients with stage 2-3 by an international panel of experts were strongly modified by CCL14 test results. This work should set the stage for clinical practice protocols and studies to determine the effects of recommended actions informed by CCL14.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Delirium is common during acute infection in older patients and is associated with functional decline. Geriatric rehabilitation (GR) can help older patients to return to their premorbid functional level. It is unknown whether delirium affects GR outcomes in patients with acute infection. We evaluated whether delirium affects trajectories of activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QoL) recovery in GR after COVID-19 infection. DESIGN This study was part of the EU-COGER study, a multicenter cohort study conducted between October 2020 and October 2021. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS Participants were recruited after COVID-19 infection from 59 GR centers in 10 European countries. METHODS Data were collected at GR admission, discharge, and at the 6-week and 6-month follow-ups. Trajectories of ADL [using the Barthel index (BI)] and QoL [using the EuroQol-5 Dimensions-5 Level (EQ-5D-5L)] recovery were examined using linear mixed models. RESULTS Of the 723 patients included (mean age 75.5 ± 9.9 years; 52.4% male), 28.9% had delirium before or during GR admission. Participants with delirium recovered in ADL at approximately the same rate as those without (linear slope effect = -0.13, SE 0.16, P = .427) up to an estimated BI score of 16.1 at 6 months. Similarly, participants with delirium recovered in QoL at approximately the same rate as those without (linear slope effect = -0.017, SE 0.015, P = .248), up to an estimated EQ-5D-5L score of 0.8 at 6 months. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Presence of delirium during the acute phase of infection or subsequent GR did not influence the recovery trajectory of ADL functioning and QoL.

Abstract
PURPOSE This work aimed to investigate the validity of wearable activity monitors (WAMs) as an objective tool to measure the return toward normal functional mobility following abdominal wall surgery. This was achieved by quantifying and comparing pre- and postoperative physical activity (PA). METHODS A multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study was designed. Patients undergoing abdominal wall surgery were assessed for eligibility and consent for study participation was obtained. Participants were asked to wear a WAM (AX3, Axivity) on the wrist of their dominant hand at least 48 hours pre-operatively, for up to 2 weeks postop, and again after 6 months postop for 48 hours. RESULTS A cohort of 20 patients were recruited in this validation study with a mean age of 47.3 ± 13.0 years. Postoperation, the percentage median PA (±IQR) dropped to 32.6% (20.1), whereas on day 14, PA had reached 64.6% (22.7) of the preoperative value providing construct validity. Activity levels at >6 months postop increased by 16.4% on an average when compared to baseline preoperative PA (p = 0.046). CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that WAMs are valid markers of postoperative recovery following abdominal wall surgery. This was achieved by quantifying the reduction in PA postoperation, which has not been previously shown. In addition, this study suggests that abdominal wall surgery may improve the patient's quality of life via increased functional mobility at 6 months postop. In the future, this technology could be used to identify the patient and surgical factors that are predictors of outcome following abdominal wall surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate recovery patterns of olfactory dysfunction among recovered COVID-19 patients, both subjective and objective, and correlate this recovery to the severity of the disease. METHODS The study recruited 200 patients and assigned them to two equal groups, one of them was a control group. The olfactory function of the study group was assessed via subjective and objective methods at baseline and then monthly for three months, with changes in smell function reported at each visit. These patients underwent chemosensory testing using the Sniffin' Sticks test and completed the validated Arabic version of the Questionnaire of Olfactory Disorders-Negative Statements (QOD-NS). RESULTS Olfactory dysfunction occurred on the first day of COVID-19 symptoms in 37% of participants. Subjective reports suggested smell recovery in 55% after 3 months, but Sniffin' Sticks showed only 1% with normal function, indicating persistent deficits in others. This study revealed smell recovery for 93% of participants (median 14 days), with most (58%) recovering within 2 weeks. No significant links were found between demographics, COVID-smell loss timing, and recovery speed. CONCLUSION Three months after COVID-19, many patients perceive smell recovery, but objective tests reveal shockingly high rates of persistent dysfunction. Further follow-up with objective tests is vital to assess the true burden and potential long-term effects of smell loss.

Abstract
Understanding the physiological and biochemical responses of tree seedlings under extreme drought stress, along with recovery during rewatering, and potential intra-species differences, will allow us to more accurately predict forest responses under future climate change. Here, we selected seedlings from four provenances (AH (Anhui), JX (Jiangxi), HN (Hunan) and GX (Guangxi)) of Schima superba and carried out a simulated drought-rewatering experiment in a field-based rain-out shelter. Seedlings were progressively dried until they reached 50% and 88% loss of xylem hydraulic conductivity (PLC) (i.e. P50 and P88), respectively, before they were rehydrated and maintained at field capacity for 30 days. Leaf photosynthesis (Asat), water status, activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and proline (Pro) concentration were monitored and their associations were determined. Increasing drought significantly reduced Asat, relative water content (RWC) and SOD activity in all provenances, and Pro concentration was increased to improve water retention; all four provenances exhibited similar response patterns, associated with similar leaf ultrastructure at pre-drought. Upon rewatering, physiological and biochemical traits were restored to well-watered control values in P50-stressed seedlings. In P88-stressed seedlings, Pro was restored to control values, while SOD was not fully recovered. The recovery pattern differed partially among provenances. There was a progression of recovery following watering, with RWC firstly recovered, followed by SOD and Pro, and then Asat, but with significant associations among these traits. Collectively, the intra-specific differences of S. superba seedlings in recovery of physiology and biochemistry following rewatering highlight the need to consider variations within a given tree species coping with future more frequent drought stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Singapore, where drug use is a highly stigmatized and criminalized issue, there is limited understanding of the challenges faced by individuals, particularly sexual minority men, in their journey towards recovery from substance dependence or addiction. This qualitative study aimed to investigate the driving forces behind drug use, the factors contributing to drug cessation, and the elements influencing the recovery process. METHODS Data were extracted from clinical records provided by The Greenhouse Community Services Limited between January 2020 to May 2022. These records encompassed information from four distinct forms: the intake assessment, progress notes, case closing summary, and the care plan review. Thematic analysis was employed to identify and categorize recurring themes within the data. RESULTS Data from beneficiaries (n = 125) were analyzed and yielded a series of themes related to facilitators of drug use, motivations to cease drug use, and managing one's ongoing recovery. Within the facilitators of drug use, two sub-themes were identified: (a) addressing trauma and triggers and (b) managing emotions. Additionally, managing one's recovery was marked by four significant sub-themes: (a) uncovering personal identities, (b) losing motivation and drive, (c) overcoming obstacles, and (d) preparing for aftercare. CONCLUSIONS The study contributes valuable insights into the dynamics of ongoing recovery management, offering potential avenues for interventions that could enhance support for individuals in their journey to overcome substance dependence. Enhancing psychoeducation and fostering peer support have the potential to facilitate the recovery process. Clearly, a holistic approach is needed to address these complex issues that cuts across our societies.

BACKGROUND Cognitive Remediation (CR) is an evidence-based therapy targeting cognitive difficulties in people with psychosis to promote functional recovery, but it is rarely implemented routinely. To reach more individuals, CR is beginning to be delivered remotely, but there is limited evidence to support the acceptability of this method. AIMS To evaluate the acceptability and feasibility of remote therapist-supported CR in people with psychosis and estimate its cost and potential benefits. METHODS A case-series with all participants assessed before and after therapy with measures of personal goal attainment (main outcome), cognition, functioning and symptoms. Acceptability was assessed with post-therapy interviews. Feasibility was assessed using proportions and confidence intervals on pre-specified parameters. Indication of benefits was assessed with exploratory analyses comparing baseline and post-therapy scores on the pre-specified outcomes. The cost of providing remote CR was assessed from both healthcare and societal perspectives. RESULTS Twenty-nine participants started therapy with two dropping out; on average participants attended 25.5 sessions. Interviews suggested that remote CR had good acceptability and led to perceived benefits. Significant and large improvements were observed on goal attainment. Cost analyses suggest that remote CR has the same health care cost as face-to-face therapy but a lower societal cost. CONCLUSIONS Our results support the use of remote CR in psychosis services as an alternative delivery modality. This method may improve adherence, attendance and be more convenient for service users. Possible barriers such as poor digital literacy or appropriate device ownership should be addressed before starting therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep is a critical component of recovery, but it can be disrupted following prolonged endurance exercise. The objective of this study was to examine the capacity of male and female professional cyclists to recover between daily race stages while competing in the 2022 Tour de France and the 2022 Tour de France Femmes, respectively. The 17 participating cyclists (8 males from a single team and 9 females from two teams) wore a fitness tracker (WHOOP 4.0) to capture recovery metrics related to night-time sleep and autonomic activity for the entirety of the events and for 7 days of baseline before the events. The primary analyses tested for a main effect of 'stage classification'-i.e., rest, flat, hilly, mountain or time trial for males and flat, hilly or mountain for females-on the various recovery metrics. RESULTS During baseline, total sleep time was 7.2 ± 0.3 h for male cyclists (mean ± 95% confidence interval) and 7.7 ± 0.3 h for female cyclists, sleep efficiency was 87.0 ± 4.4% for males and 88.8 ± 2.6% for females, resting HR was 41.8 ± 4.5 beats·min-1 for males and 45.8 ± 4.9 beats·min-1 for females, and heart rate variability during sleep was 108.5 ± 17.0 ms for males and 119.8 ± 26.4 ms for females. During their respective events, total sleep time was 7.2 ± 0.1 h for males and 7.5 ± 0.3 h for females, sleep efficiency was 86.4 ± 1.2% for males and 89.6 ± 1.2% for females, resting HR was 44.5 ± 1.2 beats·min-1 for males and 50.2 ± 2.0 beats·min-1 for females, and heart rate variability during sleep was 99.1 ± 4.2 ms for males and 114.3 ± 11.2 ms for females. For male cyclists, there was a main effect of 'stage classification' on recovery, such that heart rate variability during sleep was lowest after mountain stages. For female cyclists, there was a main effect of 'stage classification' on recovery, such that the percentage of light sleep (i.e., lower-quality sleep) was highest after mountain stages. CONCLUSIONS Some aspects of recovery were compromised after the most demanding days of racing, i.e., mountain stages. Overall however, the cyclists obtained a reasonable amount of good-quality sleep while competing in these physiologically demanding endurance events. This study demonstrates that it is now feasible to assess recovery in professional athletes during multiple-day endurance events using validated fitness trackers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation is one of the most popular strategies used by the general population and athletes to reduce muscle soreness and accelerate the recovery process of muscle damage biomarkers after an intense exercise or training session. OBJECTIVES This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of BCAA supplementation on muscle damage biomarkers and muscle soreness after exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). METHODS The systematic literature search for randomized controlled trials was conducted using seven databases, up to September 13th, 2022. The eligibility criteria for selecting studies were as follows: studies performed on healthy active participants, using BCAA at least once, controlled with a placebo or control group, performing resistance or endurance exercises, and followed up at least once post-EIMD. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the "SIGN RCT checklist". Random-effects meta-analyses were processed to compute the standardized mean difference (Hedges' g). Meta-regression analyses were completed with daily and total dosage and supplementation as continuous moderator variables. RESULTS Of the 18 studies included in this meta-analysis, 13 were of high quality and five were of acceptable quality. Our results revealed BCAA supplementation elicits a significant effect on reducing creatine kinase (CK) levels immediately (g = - 0.44; p = 0.006) and 72 h (g = - 0.99; p = 0.002), but not 24 h, 48 h, and 96 h post-EIMD. Additionally, a significant effect on delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) was identified at 24 h (g = - 1.34; p < 0.001), 48 h (g = - 1.75; p < 0.001), 72 h (g = - 1.82; p < 0.001), and 96 h (g = - 0.82; p = 0.008), but not immediately post-EIMD. No significant effect was found on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels at any time point. Meta-regression indicated higher daily and total dosages of BCAA, and longer supplementation periods were related to the largest beneficial effects on CK (total dosage and supplementation period) at 48 h, and on DOMS at 24 h (only daily dosage). CONCLUSION The overall effects of BCAA supplementation could be considered useful for lowering CK and DOMS after EIMD, but not LDH. The longer supplementation period prior to the EIMD could be more effective for CK and DOMS reduction.
