Oxygen-assisted charge transfer between ZnO quantum dots and graphene

Efficient charge transfer between ZnO quantum dots (QDs) and graphene is demonstrated by decorating ZnO QDs on top of graphene, with the assistance of oxygen molecules from the air. The electrical response of the device to UV light is greatly enhanced, and a photoconductive gain of up to 10(7) can be obtained.

Differential-phase-shift quantum key distribution using heralded narrow-band single photons

We demonstrate the first proof of principle differential phase shift (DPS) quantum key distribution (QKD) using narrow-band heralded single photons with amplitude-phase modulations. In the 3-pulse case, we obtain a quantum bit error rate (QBER) as low as 3.06% which meets the unconditional security requirement. As we increase the pulse number up to 15, the key creation efficiency approaches 93.4%, but with a cost of increasing the QBER. Our result suggests that narrow-band single photons maybe a promising source for the DPS-QKD protocol.

Web-based distance learning for nurse education: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Web-based distance learning is considered a promising approach to replace or supplement conventional nursing instruction. However, no systematic review has been seen to explore the effect of web-based distance education in nursing.

AIM

To examine the efficacy of the web-based distance education for nursing students and employed nurses.

METHODS

A systematic review of randomized controlled studies was undertaken. Multiple search strategies were performed in PubMed and Embase until July 2012. Two reviewers independently selected trials, conducted quality critical appraisal, and extracted the data from the included studies.

RESULTS

Nine randomized controlled trials met inclusion criteria, among which five studies were rated as A quality level, and the other four studies as B quality level. The results showed that web-based distance learning has produced equivalent or better effects in knowledge acquisition. For nursing skill performance, four studies revealed a positive role for the new teaching mode, and one study showed a negative viewpoint. This review also demonstrated that participants generally accepted web-based education with high satisfaction rates. Two studies reported a more positive trend for self-efficacy in performing nursing skills in the experiment group compared with control group. Some negative feedbacks were also expressed.

CONCLUSION

Web-based education has encouraging effects in improving both participants' knowledge and skills performance, and in enhancing self-efficacy in performing nursing skills, with a high satisfaction rate expressed by participants. More rigorous experimental studies are advocated.

Effect of FK506 in reducing scar formation by inducing fibroblast apoptosis after sciatic nerve injury in rats

We previously demonstrated that FK506, a generally applied immunosuppressant in organ transplantation, could promote peripheral nerve regeneration through reducing scar formation. However, little is known about how FK506 reduces scar formation. Herein we investigated the influence of FK506 on fibroblast proliferation and its correlation with scar formation after sciatic nerve injury in rats, and further explored the effect of FK506 on fibroblast proliferation and apoptosis in vitro. Masson staining and immunohistochemistry revealed that scar area and fibroblast number in the nerve anastomosis of sciatic nerve-injured rats were significantly reduced after FK506 administration. The scar area had a significant positive correlation with the fibroblast number, as detected by linear correlation analysis. CCK-8 assay and flow cytometry indicated that FK506 also inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis of fibroblasts in vitro. It was primarily phosphorylation of JNK and ERK that were activated during the apoptosis of fibroblast. Pretreatment of cells with JNK inhibitor, SP600125, or ERK inhibitor, PD98059, could inhibit FK506-induced fibroblast apoptosis, respectively. Moreover, simultaneous application of both inhibitors had additive roles in cell protection from apoptosis. These results suggest that FK506-induced fibroblast apoptosis contributes to the suppression of fibroblast proliferation and then results in the reduction of scar formation in sciatic nerve-injured rat, and that JNK and ERK are involved in FK506-induced fibroblast apoptosis.

Coherent optical memory with high storage efficiency and large fractional delay

A high-storage efficiency and long-lived quantum memory for photons is an essential component in long-distance quantum communication and optical quantum computation. Here, we report a 78% storage efficiency of light pulses in a cold atomic medium based on the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency. At 50% storage efficiency, we obtain a fractional delay of 74, which is the best up-to-date record. The classical fidelity of the recalled pulse is better than 90% and nearly independent of the storage time, as confirmed by the direct measurement of phase evolution of the output light pulse with a beat-note interferometer. Such excellent phase coherence between the stored and recalled light pulses suggests that the current result may be readily applied to single photon wave packets. Our work significantly advances the technology of electromagnetically induced transparency-based optical memory and may find practical applications in long-distance quantum communication and optical quantum computation.

Coherent control of single-photon absorption and reemission in a two-level atomic ensemble

We demonstrate coherent control of single-photon absorption and reemission in a two-level cold atomic ensemble. This is achieved by interfering the incident single-photon wave packet with the emission (or scattering) wave. For a photon with an exponential growth waveform with a time constant equal to the excited-state lifetime, we observe that the single-photon emission probability during the absorption can be suppressed due to the perfect destructive interference. After the incident photon waveform is switched off, the absorbed photon is then reemitted to the same spatial mode as that of the incident photon with an efficiency of 20%. For a photon with an exponential decay waveform with the same time constant, both the absorption and reemission occur within the waveform duration. Our experimental results suggest that the absorption and emission of a single photon in a two-level atomic ensemble may possibly be manipulated by shaping its waveform in the time domain.

Piezotronic effects on the optical properties of ZnO nanowires

We report the piezotronic effects on the photoluminescence (PL) properties of bent ZnO nanowires (NWs). We find that the piezoelectric field largely modifies the spatial distribution of the photoexcited carriers in a bent ZnO NW. This effect, together with strain-induced changes in the energy band structure due to the piezoresistive effects, results in a net redshift of free exciton PL emission from a bent ZnO NW. At the large-size limit, this net redshift depends only on the strain parameter, but it is size-dependent if the diameter of the NW is comparable to that of the depletion layer. The experimental data obtained using the near-field scanning optical microscopy technique at low temperatures support our theoretical model.

The expanding burden of cardiometabolic risk in China: the China Health and Nutrition Survey

China faces a major increase in cardiovascular disease, yet there is limited population-based data on risk factors, particularly in children. Fasting blood samples, anthropometry and blood pressure were collected on 9,244 children and adults aged ≥7 years in late 2009 as part of the national China Health and Nutrition Survey. Prevalent overweight, elevated blood pressure, and cardiometabolic risk factors: glucose, HbA1c, triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C and LDL-C), and C-reactive protein (CRP) are presented. We found that 11% of Chinese children and 30% of Chinese adults are overweight. Rates of diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension and inflammation are high and increased with age and were associated with urbanization. Approximately 42% of children have at least one of the following: pre-diabetes or diabetes, hypertension, high TC, LDL-C, TG, and CRP and low HDL-C, as do 70% men and 60% women aged 18-40 years and >90% of men and women ≥60 years. In sum, the HbA1c findings suggest that as many as 27.7 million Chinese children and 334 million Chinese adults may be pre-diabetic or diabetic. The high prevalence in less urban areas and across all income levels suggests that cardiometabolic risk is pervasive across rural and urban China.

A dark-line two-dimensional magneto-optical trap of 85Rb atoms with high optical depth

We describe the apparatus of a dark-line two-dimensional (2D) magneto-optical trap (MOT) of (85)Rb cold atoms with high optical depth (OD). Different from the conventional configuration, two (of three) pairs of trapping laser beams in our 2D MOT setup do not follow the symmetry axes of the quadrupole magnetic field: they are aligned with 45° angles to the longitudinal axis. Two orthogonal repumping laser beams have a dark-line volume in the longitudinal axis at their cross over. With a total trapping laser power of 40 mW and repumping laser power of 18 mW, we obtain an atomic OD up to 160 in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) scheme, which corresponds to an atomic-density-length product NL = 2.05 × 10(15) m(-2). In a closed two-state system, the OD can become as large as more than 600. Our 2D MOT configuration allows full optical access of the atoms in its longitudinal direction without interfering with the trapping and repumping laser beams spatially. Moreover, the zero magnetic field along the longitudinal axis allows the cold atoms maintain a long ground-state coherence time without switching off the MOT magnetic field, which makes it possible to operate the MOT at a high repetition rate and a high duty cycle. Our 2D MOT is ideal for atomic-ensemble-based quantum optics applications, such as EIT, entangled photon pair generation, optical quantum memory, and quantum information processing.

The protective effect of curcumin on Aβ induced aberrant cell cycle reentry on primary cultured rat cortical neurons

OBJECTIVES

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by progressive loss of memory and impairment of cognitive ability. One current hypothesis for AD pathogenesis is that neuronal death is linked to aberrant cell-cycle re-entry. In AD, neurons have been shown to enter the cell cycle inappropriately without the ability to complete it fully and the aberrant re-entry leads to its death. Curcumin has been reported as having a neural protective effect on the AD model, and could modulate the proliferation of tumor cells through the regulation of cyclin D1 and c-myc cell signaling pathways. In this study, we first observed the protective action of curcumin on Abeta-induced neuron damage, and then investigated whether this protective effect was a result of the inhibition of cell cycle advance.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We used MTT assay and TUNEL assay to observe the effect of curcumin on Abeta-induced neuron death, and then examined the activated caspase-3 protein level to further confirm the protective effect of curcumin against Abeta-induced neuron toxicity. Next, we further investigate whether the inhibition of cell cycle reentry was mediated by the therapeutic effect of curcumin on Abeta induced primary cultured neuron damage by Brdu label assay and western blot assay.

RESULTS

The results showed that administration of curcumin (1-10 microM) could inhibit Abeta25-35 (40 microg/ml) induced primary cultured rat cortical neuron death, down-regulating activated caspase-3 protein expression. Furthermore, treatment with curcumin could inhibit abnormal activated cyclin D1 protein level, and decrease the Brdu positive cells in proportion to the Abeta25-35 treatment neurons.

CONCLUSIONS

All the results suggest that curcumin has a protective effect against Abeta-induced toxicity in cultured rat cortical neurons, the inhibition of cell cycle re-entry at least partly mediating the therapeutic effect of curcumin in the AD model in vitro.

Effective control of photoluminescence from ZnO nanowires by a-SiNx:H decoration

The a-SiNx:H with a large bandgap of 3.8 eV was utilized to decorate ZnO nanowires. The UV emission from the a-SiNx:H-decorated ZnO nanowires are greatly enhanced compared with the undecorated ZnO nanowire. The deep-level defect emission has been completely suppressed even though the sample was annealed at temperatures up to 400 °C. The incorporation of H and N is suggested to passivate the defect states at the nanowire surface and thus result in the flat-band effect near ZnO surface as well as reduction of the nonradiative recombination probability.

Optical storage with electromagnetically induced transparency in a dense cold atomic ensemble

We experimentally investigate optical storage with electromagnetically induced transparency in a dense cold (85)Rb atomic ensemble. By varying the optical depth (OD) from 0 to 140, we observe that the optimal storage efficiency has a saturation value of 50% as OD>50. Our result is consistent with that obtained from hot vapor cell experiments.
